Transcript
- 0:00Very pleased to be joined by the great Ken Schrader.
- 0:03Schrader, how you doing? I'm doing fine getting it's race
- 0:07day next couple days and it's nice here in Saint Louis, so
- 0:11everything's great. All right, we'll get to that, to
- 0:14your racing. But First off, how excited are
- 0:16you for this new show, this new podcast?
- 0:19We have a name. I don't think we're allowed to
- 0:22announce the name yet, but yourself, Kenny Wallace to Saint
- 0:26Louisans. Are you super excited or what?
- 0:29Yes, I'm. I'm OK.
- 0:32Let me reword that. Yeah.
- 0:34I'm looking forward to it. I'm.
- 0:36This is something I swore I'd never do.
- 0:40You know anything like this? Kenny eats it up.
- 0:43Kenny likes to be seen. Kenny likes to be heard.
- 0:46I just like talk about racing. I just just started because
- 0:51Federated asked us to post where we were going and what we did.
- 0:56We just started doing Facebook a little better the last couple
- 0:59years. So I'm a little bit little bit
- 1:03scared. But yes, it'll be fun.
- 1:06My wife had a name picked out. OK, what was it?
- 1:10Dumb and Dumber. I don't know if we could get the
- 1:14trademark from Jim Carrey on that one, but you said you said
- 1:19you like to talk racing. So let's let's do just that.
- 1:22NASCAR, we have 3 races left this season.
- 1:26We're right in the thick of the playoffs here.
- 1:29Round of eight, Joey Logano, just one to advance.
- 1:32Just give us your big picture take on the NASCAR season.
- 1:36I went to the Vegas race. I was out there last week.
- 1:40You know, the, the NASCAR season.
- 1:43It just looks to me like every year those guys are running
- 1:48harder and harder and harder. It gets harder to make the
- 1:52playoffs. They're just man, they're, you
- 1:55know, as Rusty Walls. She used to always say they're
- 1:57driving her guts off the guts out, but they got to do that now
- 2:01because of the stage points and everything.
- 2:04So I really like what I'm seeing.
- 2:07You know, the other day we're out there and Logano wasn't
- 2:10really in the picture and all of a sudden he wins it on fuel.
- 2:14What doesn't make any difference how you win it.
- 2:16He was the first one to to go 400 and however many miles, 267
- 2:22laps. But I, I'm excited, man.
- 2:27It's when you come down to those, when you got in the
- 2:30playoffs, then you come down to that race where they cut four
- 2:33more that that gets a little bit nail biting.
- 2:36It's trying to figure out who's going to make it and who isn't.
- 2:40All right, I have to ask you about the controversial topic
- 2:43going on right now in NASCAR. This lawsuit, 2311 racing, Front
- 2:47Row Motorsports, this antitrust lawsuit.
- 2:50Just give us your opinion. You're coming to this from two
- 2:53different directions, as a former driver and A and a former
- 2:56car owner, right? Yes, all right.
- 3:00Someone new came into the sport. The sports run, the way it's ran
- 3:05for what, 70 something years? I just don't see it getting
- 3:12changed a lot, you know, because somebody wants it to change.
- 3:16I did see one comment said all we want where Danny had said
- 3:21something for all we want NASCAR to do is pay for our expenses.
- 3:27Well, hell yeah. Any business would want someone
- 3:29else to pay for their expenses. You know, I mean, if, if if you
- 3:37have a serious, serious problem with the way things are, maybe
- 3:44you're not allowed in the right thing.
- 3:46You know, I mean, it costs all this money to run this team and
- 3:51that, but we must not be worried about a couple million a year
- 3:57here and there after, you know, with the kind of facility they
- 4:00built. So I don't know, everybody would
- 4:03always like things to be better no matter what kind of job they
- 4:08got or what they're involved in, but kind of know going in what
- 4:12the deal is. And you said for Facebook, you
- 4:15like to tell people just what you're doing, where you're going
- 4:19and how you did Now on this podcast, obviously we're going
- 4:23to have to have you open up a little bit more, but give us
- 4:25give us your schedule. How much are you racing these
- 4:28days? I remember last year you told
- 4:30Kenny Wallace, I was, I was there, I'm from Toledo.
- 4:33You said you did the school bus racing in Toledo, OH.
- 4:36Are you still doing that? Tell folks how often you're
- 4:39racing these days. We've run 60 races so far this
- 4:44year and through this through today, 1234, I had been in a
- 4:54race car 96 days so far this year.
- 4:57We got quite a bit left this weekend.
- 4:59We're going to Grant City, Illinois, going out to do some
- 5:03sponsor stuff this next week, going to miss next week's A
- 5:08racing and go out to Seema Show. And then we've got we race in
- 5:12Springfield, MO don't know where, the 22nd, 23rd.
- 5:17We have a couple different places in November and I think
- 5:20we're going to Columbus, Ms. at the end of the month and then
- 5:22we're done until January. So we're going to run about 6566
- 5:27races, be in a car over 100 days between the racing and we're
- 5:32very fortunate. We do a lot of play days for
- 5:36Federated Auto Parts where they bring 20 customers out and we
- 5:41put them in cars, let them drive, give them a ride in two
- 5:44seater and eat lunch and go somewhere else and do it the
- 5:48next day. We'll do that about depends on
- 5:51weather and everything but 35 to 50 times a year.
- 5:55And Kenny Wallace says that racing keeps him young.
- 5:58He always says don't let the old man in for you.
- 6:01Do you still love racing as much as you did back in the day?
- 6:05Coming up or more? Yeah, that's the problem.
- 6:08I, I, I do, you know, I mean, like going to the Cup race the
- 6:13other day and watching this like, oh man, you're shaking a
- 6:17little bit because you, you'd love to be out there.
- 6:19Not that you could, you know, I mean, I know I can't play with
- 6:22those guys still, but yeah, I'm having as much fun as I've ever
- 6:27had Said we run 60 races this year, but we've won 13 of them
- 6:32at a whole bunch of different tracks.
- 6:33So we've we've had a great year and we're not done yet this
- 6:37year. And, and tell us quickly about
- 6:40Vegas. You were what the the race
- 6:42ambassador, you were honored for the weekend.
- 6:44What was it? Basically, I was the oldest guy
- 6:50that used to race Cup that they could get to come out and spend
- 6:53the weekend. That's all it was, but it was
- 6:55fun. They took between the Las Vegas
- 6:58Speedway and Chris Powell and South Point Casino and the Gone
- 7:07family, they they took off the good care of us.
- 7:11All right, let's end on this because I was on Twitter, which
- 7:14is now X these days, there's all these these accounts that have
- 7:18great classic NASCAR stories and video and pictures.
- 7:22And so I saw this picture yesterday.
- 7:25I knew I was going to be talking to you today.
- 7:26So I got to show it to you because you're talking about the
- 7:29the good old days. So tell me about Ken Schrader
- 7:32here with this car, with this hairdo, with this mustache.
- 7:36Look at this thing. Yeah, that was probably 1979 or
- 7:4580 in as a Springfield, IL Don Hank, see the Kings Ford
- 7:51Granada, which was built by poor boy chassis which was Rusty and
- 7:57Kenny Wallace, Kenny Kenny did a lot of the work.
- 8:01It was Rusty's company. But yeah, yeah, that was a long
- 8:06time ago. You know.
- 8:08A real long time ago, but we had a lot of fun.
- 8:12They without the sea, the kings here from Saint Louis, we would
- 8:14have never got to go down go Cup racing, but they helped us a
- 8:18tremendous amount. I had hair.
- 8:21I got a little bit still I got, you know, I didn't have to buy
- 8:24any like Kenny, but you know, it's, it's not near as much as I
- 8:30had done. And I have heard Kenny give this
- 8:33line many times and, and he's, he's said this.
- 8:36So I'm not giving away any secrets.
- 8:38He says, I think it cost him $19,000 to get that hair.
- 8:42And then he said he, he talked to you and you said that's all
- 8:45you got. Something like that.
- 8:47Yeah, yeah, I said you should've spent 30.
- 8:52Awesome. Well, I'll tell you what race
- 8:53fans, NASCAR fans are super excited for this podcast to hear
- 8:57all those great stories from yourself and Kenny Wallace.
- 9:00So Schrader, I'm looking forward to to working with you.
- 9:03I'm going to be producing the show.
- 9:04It's going to be on Dirty MO Media's podcast feed.
- 9:08It's going to be on the Kenny Wallace YouTube channel, and I
- 9:11can't wait. Thank you, Sir, for your time.
- 9:13No problem, looking forward to it Sir.
