- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches, for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:06Think of this as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:09Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:12you grow as a coach. We're bringing the once a year
- 0:15track clinic straight to your ears daily.
- 0:17Interested in creating your own episode?
- 0:19Everyone's welcome to participate.
- 0:21Check out the show notes below For more information.
- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27You know, I was talking to a coach out West and I'll, I don't
- 0:31know if it's OK to mention the coach's name.
- 0:34I think I'll leave, leave the person nameless for now.
- 0:37But this coach said just because you hit a mark one time doesn't
- 0:43mean that that's, you know, you, you, you, you, you are, excuse
- 0:49me, qualify for that scholarship.
- 0:51Right. Yeah.
- 0:53What's your average right? And if you hit that mark more
- 0:56than one time, then you know, if you hit it once, then that's
- 0:58that gets an eyeball. If you hit it more than once and
- 1:02several times, and that gets you some conversations.
- 1:05Consistency point. You got to talk.
- 1:08Consistency so people you know student athletes will reach out
- 1:13and this is another don't do not lie about your times or your.
- 1:17Marks. Do not do that because the first
- 1:20thing we're going to do, we're going to look you up on
- 1:22milesplitathletic.net and if you lying about your times, the
- 1:28e-mail is getting deleted because if you gonna lie about
- 1:30that, you're gonna lie about something else.
- 1:32Yeah. So don't lie.
- 1:34Just be be be upfront. You know, these are my times
- 1:38because we don't look. It's it's although it's it's all
- 1:40out there. So we don't look.
- 1:42But to your point, the consistency is, you know,
- 1:47important. You know, just just for example,
- 1:50we're talking about hurdles. I'm going to use a male hurdler.
- 1:54If you are, I get an e-mail coaching.
- 1:58I ran 14-5 and the one 10s, but you ran 1451 time and everything
- 2:04else is like 15515 four. I'm a think that 14 five is a
- 2:09fluke. Right.
- 2:11It was hand time or the wind was at 5.6 or something like that.
- 2:15It is because you only ran out, you know, one time that you're,
- 2:20you're a 15415 five hurdle. You're not a 14-5 hurdle.
- 2:25So show your consistency, be able to show your consistency.
- 2:30And then it goes back to the point we were talking about
- 2:32earlier. Show what else you can do.
- 2:34So maybe maybe you are A155 hurdler, but I'm A155 hurdler
- 2:39that can high jump. I'm A155 hurdler that maybe can
- 2:42long jump or triple jump or I can run the 400.
- 2:45Like show your, show your versatility, you know, show what
- 2:49else you can do. Because maybe that 15 five
- 2:53doesn't get you the money that you want just running 15 five,
- 2:58but you can do XY and Z and now that 15 five looks more
- 3:03attractive because, OK, they're an athlete, they're A-Team
- 3:05player. They can do this, this, this,
- 3:07they can, they can help me this, there's some development here.
- 3:10But if I look online and all I see is 15-5 and that's all you
- 3:14do, I got me personally. I'm not spending money on that,
- 3:19right? And you what you're saying, it
- 3:22resonates. And the reason why it resonates
- 3:23is because I'm getting this echo across the country.
- 3:27And one of the things I love to do is I talk to the college
- 3:30coaches because I want to find out about their program.
- 3:32Because as a high school coach, it's my duty to ensure that
- 3:37there's a fit for the athletes that I coach with the programs
- 3:40that they want to go to. And I think there's a disservice
- 3:43on a lot of coaches that don't investigate what those programs
- 3:46are great. They're not Every elite program
- 3:50has elite coaching. Sometimes they just have fast
- 3:52kids and terrible cultures, right?
- 3:55I've seen that too. And then I've also seen some
- 3:58really great cultures and kids really developing over time.
- 4:00So you really need to know who the coaches are and try to talk
- 4:04to them and find out about them and find out about their
- 4:06program. But also for the athlete out
- 4:09there, stop being entitled. Right.
- 4:14You got to get your butt up and and swallow your pride and go
- 4:17make a phone call. Nobody's you know in this world.
- 4:20Social media people are so used to them engaging with them.
- 4:23Hey, come find me if you don't go pick up.
- 4:26You know what? Let me get off my sofa.
- 4:27Let me be quiet. See, Coach, I'm blaming you.
- 4:31This is your fault somehow. Somewhere.
- 4:32All good, all good. I'm joking.
- 4:37OK, So what are some of the recruiting standards?
- 4:39Because I know that's one of the questions.
- 4:40I know Coach Billers called you out on that earlier and was
- 4:42like, hey, we want to know your recruiting standards, right?
- 4:45And I'm messing with you, coach, But no.
- 4:47So what are what are some of the things that you look for in an
- 4:50athlete? I know you talked about the
- 4:51attitude and the the the wannabe elite mentality, but as far as
- 4:55the times are concerned, what gets the conversation going for
- 4:59you at CMU? Oh, so Bill did call me out on
- 5:05recruiting standards and it's it's crazy because although like
- 5:10I have recruiting standards, I don't at the same time.
- 5:17And the reason the reason I don't is because I look for,
- 5:22will they be a great fit for us here?
- 5:26Like every, everybody can't handle what we do at Central
- 5:29Methodist. Everybody can't handle these
- 5:30small town. So I look for, yes, you have to
- 5:36have a certain skill level, but that skill level can, can vary.
- 5:43I've I've had a 15 in our conference right now.
- 5:49Give you an example. I'm going to use the lady short
- 5:51hurdles. You basically have to be running
- 5:55fourteen 14714 eight to make our final at nationals, like 14-O139
- 6:08to make nationals and to be very competitive in AI.
- 6:13I've seen 15515 six hurdlers and said to myself, I need that and
- 6:23I need that because there's untapped potential.
- 6:27There's a skill set. They might just be starting out
- 6:30and they don't know what they're doing yet, but I feel like if
- 6:33they come in a program in this environment, they're going to be
- 6:36successful. So like, that's why I say I
- 6:39have, you know, recruiting standards, but I don't as well
- 6:42because I can see some somebody and be like, OK, and this type
- 6:48of training with this training group, they're going to blossom.
- 6:52I'll give you example. There was a young lady that came
- 6:55in, she transferred in. She was a freshman at another
- 6:58university last year, ran 59. But the first time I saw her, I
- 7:04was like, who is that? And it worked out to where?
- 7:09And she ended up coming, you know, she saw what we, you know,
- 7:12we're doing and how we were developing 400 runners this
- 7:15weekend. She split 56, too.
- 7:19We've only had her for four months, five months.
- 7:23But it's. This is indoor, so I'm just
- 7:25like, it's more so like it's the mindset.
- 7:29It's, it's, you know, makeup what I see.
- 7:36But if I had to coach Bill, if this is for you, if I, if I had
- 7:39to had to put some numbers down, you know, ladies 12525558I bet
- 7:52that that's what I, you know, and then a hurdler, if you can
- 7:56hurdle and jump or hurdle and Sprint, come on.
- 8:03Yeah, come on, 'cause I, I can get you right?
- 8:06And I, and I'm, I'm not trying to toot my own horn.
- 8:08I'm, I'm, you know, still got a lot to learn.
- 8:11But if you can hurdle and Sprint, hurdle and jump, come to
- 8:15CMUI feel I feel like I'm what? What's buddy name from Ship
- 8:22Knight, You know, come, come come, come to death row, come to
- 8:29CMU. You don't want coaches days and
- 8:33all these videos, right? Come on, but but they're crazy.
- 8:36But I'm I'm the college that that do be dancing too though
- 8:39so. Now you know what though?
- 8:42But that that's what that's what makes the connection, right?
- 8:44Because you already talked about communication, trust and family,
- 8:48right? And if you're unwilling to
- 8:49engage with your kids, and I think we talked about this
- 8:52online for a second, that whole language of Gen. alpha is just
- 8:56interesting, right? Between Gen.
- 8:59Z and Gen. Alpha.
- 9:00It's like, what are you saying sometimes, but that's what
- 9:04that's what that's what stands out for athletes.
- 9:10And if you haven't had that experience with the coach yet,
- 9:13then maybe you want to look at CM us program, Y'all right,
- 9:18because you know, they got the sauce, they got the juice there
- 9:22and you know, I would I wouldn't have coaches on this on these
- 9:26live sessions that didn't know what they were doing or I felt
- 9:30like they had low integrity and we're out for to hurt people or
- 9:34out for just themselves. The reason why we pulled all
- 9:37this stuff together is so that we can, you know, talk with each
- 9:41other, cut through the noise, cut through all the fluff, as
- 9:45ChatGPT calls it, right. I can't stand that word,
- 9:50Charlie. No fluff, right?
- 9:53But to get to the real within track and field, because there
- 9:57is so much passion out here right now that is being
- 10:03diminished because of poor coaching, poor mentorship, poor
- 10:08leadership, poor teaching and poor teammates.
- 10:13I think it's important that we find the people who really love
- 10:19this sport get them together so that we don't feel so segregated
- 10:27or alone, right? Because the people who love this
- 10:32sport are going to be the ones that carry that passion into the
- 10:36next generation. And they need to see that, that,
- 10:40you know, track and field doesn't get a lot of love
- 10:42sometimes. But man, there are people who
- 10:45love this sport and I mean downright love it.
- 10:50Obviously Coach Kenny's one of them.
- 10:52I'm one of them, man. This is the passion for me.
- 10:55And I, you know, talking to my wife and I told her sometimes I
- 10:57just get teary eyed because I get so emotional about this
- 11:00because I absolutely, 100% love this sport with every fiber in
- 11:04my being. And I love being around people
- 11:08like yourself, coach, who you could tell, I just love this
- 11:12thing, man. I wouldn't trade it for the
- 11:13world. And I love my athletes and I
- 11:16love the process, right? You can tell what somebody loves
- 11:19the process. All right, coach.
- 11:21So I know we're kind of, I don't want to overcook your grits and
- 11:23I don't want to overcook our viewers grits out there as well
- 11:25because I know they're listening in and they may have a lot more
- 11:28questions about hurdling and technique and sustainability.
- 11:32And that gives us an opportunity for a Part 2 and maybe a Coach's
- 11:35Corner where we can get together and talk.
- 11:39I have two final questions for you and then we're going to wrap
- 11:42this thing up. The first one is what is your
- 11:45absolute favorite memory or thing I can say?
- 11:50What's your favorite story about track and field?
- 11:52A favorite memory about track and field.
- 11:55Doesn't matter when, where or how it happened.
- 11:57What is your favorite memory of track and field?
- 12:03Favorite memory of track and field?
- 12:06So I have two. That's hard.
- 12:12I have a couple, I think 1. So I ran AAU track and we were,
- 12:19when I was 11 years old, we were the AAU Junior Olympic champions
- 12:26in the four by one. And then you know, like at the
- 12:31time, Tony Baselli, he was a offensive for the Jaguars.
- 12:37I'm originally from Jacksonville.
- 12:39So he came and, you know, presented, you know, some medals
- 12:44to us and I, I like that was cool to me.
- 12:50And then two other memories, favorite memories.
- 12:54The first time we won a championship at CMU.
- 13:00So like that was the first, you know, championship in school
- 13:03history and my dad got to see it.
- 13:08So so he was there for that. And then I think the third time
- 13:12or the third favorite memory. So I'm I'm blessed to have we're
- 13:20able, you know, this is a private school.
- 13:22I know like some state schools, you have to keep like church and
- 13:27school separated, right. So we have the ability here to
- 13:31where, you know, we're a Methodist school, but it's very,
- 13:33you know, that verse as far as the nomination and stuff like
- 13:36that. So I have about 15 student
- 13:41athletes on the team that we all go to church together.
- 13:46And so it's not just one moment, but I think we started doing it
- 13:53last year. And since then, the experience
- 13:59of not just those 15, but the entire team has shifted.
- 14:05So like that moment and us, that connection has really changed my
- 14:12outlook on a lot of things. And you know, like my purpose
- 14:17for what it is that I'm doing, why I'm here in central as
- 14:22central method is why, why I'm physically here right now.
- 14:25So that that memory and it's still going like it hasn't
- 14:29stopped yet. So that was like a real shift or
- 14:33has been a real shift in my life that I'm very appreciative and
- 14:36blessed to to speak on. That man, I love to hear that
- 14:43again, it just goes back to what you said earlier, communication,
- 14:46trust and family, right? You got to be able to talk to
- 14:49each other and get real authentic with each other and be
- 14:52able to tell each other the truth.
- 14:53And that takes an immense amount of trust from the from the get
- 14:58go. All right, because if you don't
- 15:01have trust and nobody cares what you're saying, there's no real
- 15:04connection and you you can't take on faith what a person
- 15:10might be giving you and assume positive intent.
- 15:13And then the family portion of it is I keep hearing it over and
- 15:18over and over again. I don't know if anybody else is
- 15:19hearing it, but I keep hearing it.
- 15:21The people that you're, you're the people that you have your
- 15:27people there, you know, the university people, your people,
- 15:30your athletes and, and the, and the university's athletes.
- 15:33You know, I say that kind of like comprehensively, right?
- 15:38But the idea that you all come together and do things together
- 15:42to make sure that you're not just successful athletically,
- 15:46not just successful academically, but also that you
- 15:50become a good human being. Right.
- 15:54That you're productive, that you're a citizen of the world
- 15:58and you become significant or impact me.
- 16:00If you can't do great things, then do small things in a great
- 16:06way, right? And that's the power behind what
- 16:09I hear you saying. All right, coach, such a
- 16:12powerful session here. How do people get in contact
- 16:16with you or how do they follow you if they want to have follow
- 16:20up with, you know, asking questions or want to talk to
- 16:22you, want to get to know you, want to learn more about your
- 16:24program? What's the best ways to get in
- 16:27contact with you? Great question.
- 16:30All right, so on Instagram at cut the check, that's I cut the
- 16:39check and then Twitter, it's at Coach Kenny with two
- 16:43underscores. But you know, I'd be typing cut
- 16:45the check. I think that might come up.
- 16:48I'll put my e-mail in the the chat, but it's
- 16:50kr.anderson@centralmethodist.edu and my cell phone number
- 16:59904-524-3987. Like I'm a, I'm a open book.
- 17:06Everything that I I've learned, I've learned, you know, from
- 17:11experience, I've learned from watching other people and I've
- 17:14learned from mostly asking questions and not being afraid
- 17:17to ask questions. So I know we didn't get maybe
- 17:21into a lot of the detail on hurdle specifics, but you know,
- 17:25I'm I'm in season. So, you know, take that, you
- 17:29know, that I'm not focused on on my group.
- 17:31But and if anybody has questions, you know, Instagram,
- 17:35Twitter, reach out, text, e-mail, you know, and I, you
- 17:40know, do my best to take time to, you know, talk about
- 17:43whatever it is that you want to talk about.
- 17:45It could be sprinting, it could be hurdling 400, you know,
- 17:48whatever it whatever it is, whatever questions you have.
- 17:50But Instagram at cut the check. I'm on Facebook.
- 17:54Twitter is at Coach Kenny and then
- 17:56kr.anderson@centralmethodist.edu is my e-mail all right?
- 18:01There you have it y'all, and I just found out somebody did type
- 18:04in the chat that I just sat there from Saint Louis.
- 18:07Coach, coach, loose change. I see that since I'm from Saint
- 18:12Louis, Matt runs a staple for indoor training apparently.
- 18:16So apparently I need to get out more.
- 18:21I'm I'm lost in the sauce. Coach man, I really appreciate
- 18:24you listening. Also don't forget y'all, you can
- 18:27also follow and find coach Kenny in the track tribe.
- 18:30He's our and I, I use this term and he probably going to beat me
- 18:34up a little bit for saying it, but the the hurdle guru.
- 18:38I, I know he, I knew it. I knew it.
- 18:40Don't beat me up. Listen, he's a he's a well
- 18:44accomplished and a very knowledgeable coach.
- 18:46And I, I use the term guru loosely because people tend to
- 18:52use it as a connotation like, you know, all.
- 18:54And I don't think that Kenny, coach Kenny approaches anything
- 18:58in that manner. He has a humble spirit about him
- 19:01or as they say, an humble spirit about him.
- 19:03I was always constantly learning, willing to share any
- 19:07question I've, I know I've ever had in our, in our interactions
- 19:10that he's like, hey, no, this is what I see.
- 19:12And he never says, no, you're stupid.
- 19:14No, you're wrong. Not publicly anyway.
- 19:17No, I'm joking. No, he never does that.
- 19:21And he says, hey, this is what I do and this is what has worked
- 19:24for us. I don't, I don't know that.
- 19:27I don't know anybody who's ever said a bad word about him.
- 19:31And if they did, they said it real privately and very, very
- 19:33low because they probably get jumped.
- 19:36Everybody loves Coach Kenny, man, including myself.
- 19:39I really enjoy his company. I really enjoy learning from
- 19:42him. And you know, I continue to
- 19:45watch and see what he's doing and he's doing great things over
- 19:47there at CMU. You heard his his his handles on
- 19:51Instagram as well as Twitter. But you can also find them in
- 19:54the track tribe in the on the school app SKOOL.
- 19:58Just search for the track tribe again, I'm track coach Jones and
- 20:02you know, just request membership.
- 20:03We do screen because we don't want any spam in there.
- 20:06We don't want any nonsense in there.
- 20:07And I do moderate it for that. So if you come in here harassing
- 20:10people, I will give you the steel toe of all steel toes.
- 20:14We're not playing those games. We want to make sure that this
- 20:16place is safe for not only coaches, but also parents and
- 20:20athletes as well. So if you got questions or you
- 20:24just want to learn about track and field or just want to be
- 20:26around people because you love the sport, man, this is the
- 20:28community for you. And that's what we're trying to
- 20:30build here. Coach, any last words before we
- 20:33skied out a lot of here as you head towards your mat runs?
- 20:39We actually did some mat runs today and we were on like we got
- 20:42this assault bike. We were on that today too.
- 20:45But if you, if you sign up for school tonight, tomorrow I'm
- 20:50dropping the hurdle calculator that I use touchdown times, 100
- 20:56hurdles, 110 hurdles, 60 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 400
- 20:58hurdles. So I need y'all to go subscribe
- 21:01to school, get in and I'll get get approved.
- 21:04All that 'cause I'm gonna drop some stuff tomorrow in the group
- 21:09and the app so you can check that out.
- 21:11And but at the end of the day, you know, coaches, you know,
- 21:15learn close mouths don't don't get fed.
- 21:17So try to learn as much as possible.
- 21:20Culture, athletes, take care of your athletes.
- 21:23Help your athletes to be great, great people.
- 21:26And then everything else will take care of yourself.
- 21:28And then athletes, if you're listening and I'll just work
- 21:30hard, you know, pay attention to the little things, ask
- 21:34questions, ask for feedback, become a student of the sport,
- 21:37student of the craft. And then, you know, let's get
- 21:41it. Let's let's, let's get it.
- 21:44And also, if if you, if you're a senior, you know, it's time for
- 21:47you to come earn your wings. You know, come earn your wings.
- 21:51You guys better come earn your wings because I'm hoping I can
- 21:54get a couple of these kids that we have on our senior roster to
- 21:58see if it's a if it's a good fit.
- 22:00First of all, if they want to come out that way, right.
- 22:03But again, we just looking at some of the hurdlers and I'm
- 22:05excited. This is one of my first years
- 22:09coaching Hurley's. I've coached a lot of track and
- 22:11field, don't get me wrong. So just full transparency.
- 22:14I'm learning from him. But at the same time, I know
- 22:16enough to get our kids to where they need to be.
- 22:18And I understand Hurley period. But man, just the opportunity to
- 22:21listen at the feet of someone who has produced so many great
- 22:24hurdlers has been an amazing opportunity.
- 22:27And again, the school app SKOOL and I just signed that.
- 22:31I'm sorry. Well, not sorry, but it's my
- 22:34mom's. My mom is an as an ASL
- 22:36interpreter. Fun fact about me and I have, I
- 22:40learned, I learned sign language, a little bit of sign
- 22:42language, enough to have a conversation through sign
- 22:45language dance back in the day. Don't tell anybody.
- 22:47That's a fun fact. But I do want you guys to come
- 22:51in and and connect with us, man. And, and if you got questions,
- 22:54ask him. If you got stories, let's tell
- 22:56him if you want some things you want to share.
- 22:59But the most important thing right now is that you come in
- 23:02and have fun and join the community.
- 23:05And coach said he is going to drop the touchdown calculator.
- 23:10I'm calling that right touchdown calculator.

- 23:16us now. I'm excited about that.
- 23:19And I, I'm, I'm looking forward to using that because I, I've, I
- 23:22had never thought about timing that particular piece of metric.

- 24:45another track try production coach Kenny Anderson, the GOAT
- 24:50of the hurdles, the the guru of I.
- 24:54I can't think of anything that rounds a guru.
- 24:56So not a rapper. He's going to shake his head.
- 24:59He's he'll say he's not the he's not a guru.
- 25:02But I'll tell you what, man, he, he, what you can't deny him is
- 25:04that he is a champion in his own right, not only for not only
- 25:09literally as as a program, but also as a person for track and
- 25:13field and for athletes, a champion for good human beings
- 25:17and, and, and people who soft hearts.
- 25:20And so we appreciate you, coach, and keep doing your thing.
- 25:23Keep impacting because I'm telling you, if nobody else has
- 25:26told you and throughout your life or even in the last few
- 25:29days, you matter and what you do is impacting.
