- 0:07Speaker 1: This is the Kevin Sports Very Daily here on Radio
- 0:10Speaker 1: Folks then bringing you the Folkstone and Hive Sports Show.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Today's show we have local football scores including some fa
- 0:19Speaker 1: cut news. We've got a round up of the local
- 0:24Speaker 1: cricket scores. There's some park run news and a recap
- 0:32Speaker 1: if I get time of my day at the Clacton
- 0:35Speaker 1: Half Team half Marathon and ten k road race. And
- 0:41Speaker 1: our special guest is Joe Tolhurst from South Kent. Mind.
- 0:44Speaker 1: We should be chatting about the couch to five k
- 0:47Speaker 1: is involved with the Folkston Half Marathon where Joe is
- 0:50Speaker 1: putting the team together and the up and coming firewalk
- 0:54Speaker 1: at the Three Hills. So don't go away. So what
- 1:04Speaker 1: better way to start a song? We've got a few
- 1:07Speaker 1: songs in the playlist about fires, but I love this one.
- 1:10Speaker 1: This is a real belter from Take That and Relight
- 1:13Speaker 1: My Fire. Whatever we go get in the show on
- 1:40Speaker 1: the road. What a great track there from Take That
- 1:46Speaker 1: and Lulu. And we've got a bit of a fire
- 1:48Speaker 1: theme here today. We'll explain later on, but at the
- 1:51Speaker 1: moment I am joined in the studio by a fundraiser
- 1:54Speaker 1: for South Kent Mind. Joe told hers welcome to the show.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Joe, Hi, Kevin, thanks for having me on.
- 1:59Speaker 1: You're welcome. Now then we've got loads to talk about.
- 2:02Speaker 1: But first of all, tell us a little bit about
- 2:04Speaker 1: South Kent Mind and your role.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, South Kent Mind we're your local independent mental health charity.
- 2:11Speaker 2: We cover the geographical area from Sandwich all the down
- 2:16Speaker 2: to Dungeness and in as far as Hawkins and Wingham.
- 2:19Speaker 2: We're despite being called South Kent Mind, we're actually not
- 2:23Speaker 2: a branch of National Mind. We're in independent charity under
- 2:26Speaker 2: the Mind brand, so a lot of people have a
- 2:28Speaker 2: bit of a misconception around that. So we don't see
- 2:30Speaker 2: any actual financial backing from Mind, just support through campaigns.
- 2:34Speaker 2: We have to support ourselves through trusts, grants and grants
- 2:38Speaker 2: and foundations and obviously fundraising. Many people know our shops.
- 2:42Speaker 2: We've got shops in Folks and Hythe and Dover and
- 2:45Speaker 2: the main office in Folkston. So in terms of our services,
- 2:48Speaker 2: we run a lot of group activities, so that's our
- 2:51Speaker 2: main focus in terms of mental health support, so we
- 2:54Speaker 2: run cookery, class well being, wellbeing art groups and lots
- 3:00Speaker 2: of outdoor activities such as walks and these happen in Deal,
- 3:04Speaker 2: Dover and Folkstone along with a lot of sort of
- 3:07Speaker 2: spontaneous summer activities to put together summer activities calendar. And
- 3:12Speaker 2: we also for low cost counseling and money guidance services,
- 3:15Speaker 2: which is sort of the real, real, sort of bones
- 3:18Speaker 2: of what we do in terms of practical services.
- 3:21Speaker 1: So is that your role or are you You're basically
- 3:23Speaker 1: a fundraiser, but I'll see you know you've got other
- 3:27Speaker 1: strings to your bow.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, So in terms of my role, I'm everything to
- 3:31Speaker 2: do with fundraising and communications with the charity. So anyone
- 3:35Speaker 2: looking to do a challenge event or fundraise for our charity,
- 3:39Speaker 2: I sort of help them out with that process and
- 3:40Speaker 2: help them out with their fundraising and obviously everything to
- 3:43Speaker 2: do with communicating the charity, like coming on radio and
- 3:46Speaker 2: radio's speaking with you today. That's all part of my
- 3:49Speaker 2: role as well.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Okay, So I mean if someone has got an issue,
- 3:52Speaker 1: you know, let's go back to the real world now.
- 3:54Speaker 1: People out there are struggling and they get in tired
- 3:57Speaker 1: of you. I mean there must be different levels of
- 4:01Speaker 1: mental health. What sort of people do you deal with
- 4:05Speaker 1: if you like?
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously mental health mental well being is really in
- 4:09Speaker 2: sportlight at the moment, lots of people are struggling, so
- 4:11Speaker 2: we're there for anyone with with common mental health issues
- 4:14Speaker 2: such as anxiety and depression. So we offer sort of
- 4:18Speaker 2: groups that help people with with getting back on their feet,
- 4:21Speaker 2: rehabilitation that way, need a bit of a confidence boost,
- 4:25Speaker 2: need a bit of socialization, if they're feeling a bit lonely,
- 4:27Speaker 2: that's our that's our specialization, that's our area area of specialization.
- 4:31Speaker 2: We do that, like I said, through our groups and
- 4:33Speaker 2: UH and and and our special services.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Okay, so the groups and the activities just just tell
- 4:39Speaker 1: us a little bit about them. Where where does that happen.
- 4:42Speaker 2: So a lot of our a lot of our groups,
- 4:43Speaker 2: such as cookery are really popular ones. They happen in
- 4:46Speaker 2: our in our Folksing Center which is on Dover Road
- 4:48Speaker 2: at the bottom of Grace Hill, but we also offer
- 4:51Speaker 2: services in Deal and Dover. A full list of these
- 4:54Speaker 2: can be found in our website southktmind dot org dot UK.
- 4:58Speaker 2: But we do encourage people to pop in for little
- 5:00Speaker 2: well being check up before they join our groups, just
- 5:02Speaker 2: so we can have a chat with you first, and
- 5:04Speaker 2: details about that can also be found on our website
- 5:06Speaker 2: as well.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Right, So if people come to you Okay, So the
- 5:11Speaker 1: idea is to get the word out as well. I mean,
- 5:14Speaker 1: do you do you sort of go to groups, Do
- 5:16Speaker 1: you get into schools or anything like that.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we get into lots of local primary schools
- 5:20Speaker 2: and secondary schools and this is something that we want
- 5:22Speaker 2: to do more of. But it's obviously it's a tough
- 5:25Speaker 2: environment economically, so we need the funding to be able
- 5:27Speaker 2: to do that. So that's why we're out here promoting
- 5:29Speaker 2: the charity raising funds so we can get out there
- 5:32Speaker 2: and do some more work in schools because it's really
- 5:34Speaker 2: important to, you know, help the next generation of younger people,
- 5:38Speaker 2: as mental health and well being is worsening among adults
- 5:43Speaker 2: in the UK.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Right, And I do you think since COVID it's been
- 5:46Speaker 1: a real problem and even during COVID because people were
- 5:49Speaker 1: very isolated, weren't they.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah, isolation is a real has a real negative effect
- 5:53Speaker 2: on people's mental wellbeing. I mean there's statistics coming out
- 5:56Speaker 2: at the moment that one of four people in England
- 5:59Speaker 2: experience a mental health problem anually. And I think, like
- 6:01Speaker 2: you said, COVID is a real factor that played into that.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Just the loneliness, the isolation through lockdown really really had
- 6:08Speaker 2: a negative effect on people's mental health. And it's only
- 6:10Speaker 2: now that you know, people are coming to grips with it,
- 6:13Speaker 2: looking back at you know how turbulent COVID was, and
- 6:17Speaker 2: thinking about ways that they can benefit their own mental health.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Now, yeah, right, So the thing is is we're going
- 6:22Speaker 1: to find out this this morning. It's not all doom
- 6:24Speaker 1: and gloom, because we got some cracking things to talk about.
- 6:28Speaker 1: There's lots of groups that are going on and we're
- 6:31Speaker 1: going to talk about a few particular items, and one
- 6:34Speaker 1: of them a little bit later on the show is
- 6:36Speaker 1: to do with a firewalk. So we've just had Lulu
- 6:41Speaker 1: and take that as playing relight my fire. So what
- 6:44Speaker 1: we're going to do now is Billy Joel turn and
- 6:47Speaker 1: he didn't start the fire, so sit tight and buckle up.
- 7:26Speaker 1: That's pretty jo oldare claiming that he didn't start the
- 7:30Speaker 1: fire year right, Well, we're going to find out later
- 7:33Speaker 1: who's going to start the firewalk. But so we're back
- 7:36Speaker 1: in the studio with Joe. Now, Joe, we're just talking
- 7:39Speaker 1: off here there. We haven't quite finished about what South
- 7:42Speaker 1: Kent mind do, so just one of one or two
- 7:44Speaker 1: things that we want to talk about. So far away.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah, a couple of things I want to mentioned, Kevin.
- 7:49Speaker 2: We as a charity as well, we offer support to businesses,
- 7:52Speaker 2: local businesses and organizations. So we're always looking to get
- 7:55Speaker 2: out there and and help out your business. And one
- 7:58Speaker 2: way we do that is through mental health first aid training.
- 8:01Speaker 2: So we actually offer courses with a mental health first
- 8:05Speaker 2: aid trainer who comes down and we can we can
- 8:08Speaker 2: train up your staff to sort of to sort of
- 8:11Speaker 2: help them become knowledgeable of what to be aware of
- 8:15Speaker 2: so they can look out for signs of poor mental
- 8:17Speaker 2: health and well being among their staff. And this is
- 8:19Speaker 2: really important to have as an employer because the various
- 8:23Speaker 2: laws involved with it and also just for the general
- 8:25Speaker 2: well being of your staff. So we offer these great
- 8:28Speaker 2: courses in mental health first aid and all information about
- 8:32Speaker 2: that can be found on our website.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So if somebody was at work and if you like
- 8:37Speaker 1: this mental health trainer kind of noticed that, you know,
- 8:39Speaker 1: his mind was not on the job, and that would
- 8:42Speaker 1: be the first move just to have a little chat
- 8:43Speaker 1: with him. Yeah.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah, just just opening up into conversation and you know,
- 8:46Speaker 2: you know, finding out scratching the surface, finding out if
- 8:49Speaker 2: they're right.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Something a home might be troubling them more financially, yeah.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and then signposting them back to us really because
- 8:55Speaker 2: we offer help with you know, financial issues through art
- 8:58Speaker 2: to our money Guidance. If you've got issues with money
- 9:02Speaker 2: finances and you need and that's negatively affecting your mental health,
- 9:05Speaker 2: we can support you with that as well.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Okay, So what else you got?
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and we also we'll talk about our fundraising events
- 9:14Speaker 2: coming up. But on the seventh of September, we've actually
- 9:17Speaker 2: got a coastal Sunrise Walk of Hope for Suicide Prevention
- 9:22Speaker 2: Awareness Month, which is September, and that's you know, part
- 9:25Speaker 2: of our commitment to supporting mental health and raising awareness
- 9:28Speaker 2: of suicide in our community. We're hosting a sunrise walk
- 9:32Speaker 2: starting at six am, so five forty five am. Meet
- 9:35Speaker 2: in hythe Battery Point car park and Finishing and Folkston
- 9:39Speaker 2: and this is to mark Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a
- 9:44Speaker 2: really important month to highlight in our community. As you know,
- 9:48Speaker 2: suicide should be you know, made aware in that way
- 9:53Speaker 2: and we should do what we can to support people
- 9:56Speaker 2: who have been affected by.
- 9:57Speaker 1: It, right, and how can people find out about that?
- 10:00Speaker 1: Once again? Is it the website? Yeah?
- 10:01Speaker 2: Once again? On the website, so southkatmind dot org dot
- 10:05Speaker 2: UK and their instructions now on how to sign up
- 10:07Speaker 2: and let you know, let us know if you'd like
- 10:09Speaker 2: to join.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Okay, right, so I think if does anybody else want
- 10:13Speaker 1: to talk about Joe before we move on?
- 10:14Speaker 2: I think that covers all the charity stuff our side.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, so right, so now first up on the agenda,
- 10:19Speaker 1: we've got a couch to five k the Buckston movers there.
- 10:23Speaker 1: What's the Buckston thing? Tell us about that?
- 10:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so this actually came through a relationship with bucks
- 10:28Speaker 2: in the water company that everyone that everyone knows and
- 10:31Speaker 2: it's we essentially are running it. We're running from from
- 10:34Speaker 2: the end of June a twelve week course, so a
- 10:37Speaker 2: couch to five k group where the idea is that
- 10:40Speaker 2: you have no actually no background in running. It can
- 10:42Speaker 2: be it can be something that you've wanted to do,
- 10:45Speaker 2: something you see other people doing and want to get
- 10:46Speaker 2: involved with, and you go from that couch so the
- 10:49Speaker 2: state of non running and then by the end of
- 10:51Speaker 2: the twelve week the aim is the aim is to
- 10:53Speaker 2: be able to run a five k without stopping. And
- 10:55Speaker 2: we're on week nine now and it's going really well.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Everyone's everyone's you know, building up their their endurance, their
- 11:01Speaker 2: their running ability and really enjoying it on the way
- 11:03Speaker 2: along the way because of you know, the benefits that
- 11:05Speaker 2: running and movement have for our mental health and well being.
- 11:09Speaker 1: And did these people did they know each other before
- 11:12Speaker 1: they joined the group?
- 11:13Speaker 2: A few did a few colleagues at work. But we
- 11:16Speaker 2: made open enough so can join if you're on your own.
- 11:21Speaker 2: It was. It's really welcoming environment led by brilliant coaches
- 11:24Speaker 2: at the at the Folks and Running Club who are
- 11:26Speaker 2: doing this in collaboration with so big thank you to
- 11:29Speaker 2: Folks and Running Club in particular Catherine and Margaret, the
- 11:33Speaker 2: guys there. They be really supportive with coaches and volunteers
- 11:37Speaker 2: each week and it's been really great to have some
- 11:39Speaker 2: sort of some professional help with with with the running
- 11:43Speaker 2: and everyone's really enjoying it.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Right. So, so you've got a little group there, I mean,
- 11:48Speaker 1: do you have you noticed that they are getting more comfortable?
- 11:53Speaker 1: Can you see that they're bonding as a group? And
- 11:57Speaker 1: I don't know if you speak to them, obviously you
- 11:58Speaker 1: do because you go along and know that. Do you
- 12:01Speaker 1: find that they're looking forward to you know, something that's
- 12:04Speaker 1: kind of gives them a little spring to this STP.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think everyone's really enjoying themselves. You know that
- 12:10Speaker 2: the numbers have been really great each week. Everyone's everyone
- 12:13Speaker 2: keeps coming back, so I suppose that's a good sign.
- 12:15Speaker 2: And yeah, they're really enjoying just the positive effects of running,
- 12:18Speaker 2: like like the bodily and mentally you just you just
- 12:22Speaker 2: feel better week and week, and and the challenge element
- 12:24Speaker 2: as well, because each week we progress a little bit,
- 12:27Speaker 2: go a little bit further, less less stopping, that kind
- 12:29Speaker 2: of thing, and everyone really enjoys the challenge of that
- 12:33Speaker 2: and benefits.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Right. So yeah, yeah, but you're quite a sportsman yourself, Joe,
- 12:37Speaker 1: aren't you. I Mean, we will perhaps one day get
- 12:41Speaker 1: you in or somebody from the hockey club, but you're
- 12:43Speaker 1: you're a keen hockey player, aren't you. So you know
- 12:46Speaker 1: the benefits of sport and exercise. And I mean, let's
- 12:51Speaker 1: face it, I was up there Monday and it was
- 12:53Speaker 1: good to see you personally taking part rather than just
- 12:56Speaker 1: cracking a whip and watching the others.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's great to be involved with the group,
- 13:01Speaker 2: really supportive, like like a positive environment, like I said,
- 13:05Speaker 2: But yeah, I know the benefits of sport really well.
- 13:07Speaker 2: I played for a folks ops with hockey club first eleven.
- 13:11Speaker 2: It's and yeah, it's a real sort of constant in
- 13:13Speaker 2: my life that helps me. Is the foundation for them
- 13:17Speaker 2: going into work and everything. And yeah, I could be
- 13:19Speaker 2: more of a more bigger advocate of the benefits of sport.
- 13:23Speaker 1: You're dead right, because I mean, all right, so, I
- 13:25Speaker 1: mean my sporting days are behind me, if you like,
- 13:29Speaker 1: because I took part in so much sport at quite
- 13:33Speaker 1: an intense level. When I played football, I just had
- 13:35Speaker 1: to be one hundred percent fit. Now I'm suffering from
- 13:38Speaker 1: bad knees and bad ankles and bad backs. But I
- 13:40Speaker 1: wouldn't have changed it an any way at all. I
- 13:43Speaker 1: looked forward to a game on Saturday, I looked forward
- 13:45Speaker 1: to training, and even after a game, and after training,
- 13:49Speaker 1: bonding with with your teammates. You know, it's so such
- 13:53Speaker 1: an advantage. And I've had so many people come in
- 13:55Speaker 1: here and talk about team games and and just the
- 14:00Speaker 1: benefit of just joining doing something, whether it's squash, rugby, cricket, hockey, whatever,
- 14:08Speaker 1: Just get out there and do something, even if it's
- 14:10Speaker 1: a walking group. It all adds to as Joe says,
- 14:12Speaker 1: to your mental health, which is they're kind of a
- 14:16Speaker 1: bit of a buzzword now, isn't it mental health? I
- 14:18Speaker 1: Mean before it was kind of just get one, get
- 14:22Speaker 1: on and get on with it, you know, But now
- 14:23Speaker 1: it's it's people people like yourself are getting people that
- 14:27Speaker 1: are struggling to come out and talk about it, aren't they?
- 14:30Speaker 1: Do you find people are being more open, they're not
- 14:32Speaker 1: holding back so much.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely the gen environment, everyone's more open to mental
- 14:38Speaker 2: health and talking about it openly, which is such an
- 14:40Speaker 2: important thing because conversations that the first step towards improving
- 14:45Speaker 2: your mental health, and sport is a great way to
- 14:47Speaker 2: do that. It doesn't matter what level you play at.
- 14:50Speaker 2: You don't have to be the fastest runner, the most
- 14:52Speaker 2: skillful player. I think just getting out there and socializing again,
- 14:55Speaker 2: like you said, ok, with other people is could help
- 14:59Speaker 2: your mental health without you even really noticing.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah right. So these guys there on that was
- 15:03Speaker 1: week nine? Was it last Monday? So nine, ten, eleven,
- 15:06Speaker 1: three mores ago. Let's hope that when they finished the
- 15:10Speaker 1: week twelve that they don't stop. That's the thing there's that,
- 15:14Speaker 1: you know. But we do now have a park run
- 15:18Speaker 1: which is five k and that's a perfect avenue to
- 15:22Speaker 1: go into. And I'm sure you've suggested that they get
- 15:26Speaker 1: a barcode and try a park run. So I will
- 15:31Speaker 1: just say that on Monday there was people. And I
- 15:33Speaker 1: do know this that Chris Walgo joins in a lot
- 15:36Speaker 1: and Julie Gibbs is joining in, and it's not I mean,
- 15:39Speaker 1: there are always It's good that the folks and running
- 15:41Speaker 1: club have all got together. I've got a little team
- 15:43Speaker 1: of coaches, and yeah, it was good to see. I
- 15:47Speaker 1: was up there Monday and I just felt a good
- 15:50Speaker 1: vibe about the place. So carry on, you couch the
- 15:53Speaker 1: five k. There's only three weeks to go, and then
- 15:56Speaker 1: I'm sure I'm going to try and get up there
- 15:58Speaker 1: on that twelfth week and and just see how you're
- 16:01Speaker 1: all getting on so right, So that's one if you
- 16:07Speaker 1: like objective. It's nearly there, three quarters of the way
- 16:11Speaker 1: through what we're gonna do. Now we're going to play
- 16:13Speaker 1: another song and then we're going to come back. And
- 16:15Speaker 1: the next on your gender is you're trying to get
- 16:17Speaker 1: a team for the half marathon, so you can tell
- 16:19Speaker 1: us all about that. So we got another song now
- 16:22Speaker 1: about fire. Yeah, you know, I'll put fire in the
- 16:25Speaker 1: playlist and loads of them come up. But I haven't
- 16:29Speaker 1: heard this one for a very very long time. It
- 16:31Speaker 1: does take a little bit of time to get going,
- 16:33Speaker 1: so don't turn the radios up just yet. But this
- 16:36Speaker 1: is Van Gelis and Chariots of Fire. So Van Gelis,
- 17:28Speaker 1: when was the last time you heard that one? Am
- 17:29Speaker 1: chari sa Fire? Do you remember that film? Remember how
- 17:31Speaker 1: it started? I'll tell you how it started. They were
- 17:34Speaker 1: all running along the beach in sort of half on
- 17:38Speaker 1: the edge of the sea there with this music playing.
- 17:42Speaker 1: And every time I hear that song, that is the
- 17:44Speaker 1: very first thing I think about. Okay, So we're back
- 17:47Speaker 1: in the studio. This is Kevin Day and Radio Focus
- 17:49Speaker 1: and we're talking to a Joe Tolehurst from South Kent
- 17:53Speaker 1: Mind and we are talking about Now we're going to
- 17:55Speaker 1: mention the half marathon which is coming up. So Joe
- 17:59Speaker 1: over to you. What's going on at the half marathon?
- 18:02Speaker 2: Yeah, So this year for the upcoming half marathon on
- 18:04Speaker 2: Sunday's twentieth of September, we're going to enter a South
- 18:09Speaker 2: camp my team. This is something that charity you haven't
- 18:11Speaker 2: done before and something that I really wanted to promote
- 18:15Speaker 2: as I've been the wrong about a year now. Want
- 18:18Speaker 2: to get involved in more sports and local organizations. So
- 18:21Speaker 2: this obviously run by the Folks and Rotary half Marathon. Yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 2: and we're putting together team, so putting the feelers out
- 18:29Speaker 2: a few months ago and obviously the Folks are running
- 18:31Speaker 2: club have really picked up well on it and we've
- 18:35Speaker 2: got plenty of members of the team. I'm just on
- 18:38Speaker 2: the way to do another round of promotion as we're
- 18:41Speaker 2: coming up to about a month away.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Right, So what's the score on the promotion then for
- 18:48Speaker 1: an individual if they want to, hopefully they've started their training,
- 18:52Speaker 1: because you can't just turn up and run a half marathon.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Let's make that very clear. I mean, how does it
- 19:01Speaker 1: stay d You're asking them to raise money?
- 19:03Speaker 2: Yeah, so the idea is that we'll pay your entry,
- 19:07Speaker 2: but we put a suggested sponsorship goal of one hundred
- 19:10Speaker 2: and twenty pounds in place to maximize the effectively fundraising
- 19:14Speaker 2: and your impact. And then you'll be equipped with a
- 19:16Speaker 2: south ket My vest on the day to represent the team.
- 19:20Speaker 2: And you've been doing great work for your local independent
- 19:22Speaker 2: mental health charity. Obviously, like we talked about the benefits
- 19:25Speaker 2: of sport for mental health, and I think it's really
- 19:27Speaker 2: important for us to have a presence at sports event
- 19:30Speaker 2: local marathons, local half marathons, everything like that to sort
- 19:34Speaker 2: of promote the charity and to promote the benefits of
- 19:38Speaker 2: promote the benefits of work that we do locally.
- 19:40Speaker 1: All right, So what about you personally? Will you be
- 19:42Speaker 1: running the whole or is it kind of clash with
- 19:44Speaker 1: your hockey training?
- 19:45Speaker 2: I think is fifty It is touch and go at
- 19:48Speaker 2: the moment. We have a game away in Woking the
- 19:51Speaker 2: day before, so you know, at the moment it's looking
- 19:54Speaker 2: like I will, But you know, a hockey dependent Yeah, yeah,
- 20:00Speaker 2: can't resist a challenge, so I we'll probably take it out.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Oh well done to you. Yeah yeah, And I mean,
- 20:06Speaker 1: of you do you know anything about the course? Have
- 20:07Speaker 1: you run it before?
- 20:09Speaker 2: Have it myself? But I've hoped there's a big head
- 20:10Speaker 2: at the end.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Well yeah there is. So basically you start up on
- 20:15Speaker 1: the lees. We used to go down the Road of Remembrance,
- 20:19Speaker 1: but no one can do that now. So I think
- 20:21Speaker 1: it was the first year they changed the course and
- 20:23Speaker 1: so they'd done went out on the lees and they
- 20:27Speaker 1: went down the Sandgate Hill, but not very far, just
- 20:31Speaker 1: down to I think where they turn off is for
- 20:33Speaker 1: the vets down there. Then they cut off and found
- 20:36Speaker 1: their way back onto the promenade, and then they went
- 20:38Speaker 1: out to Hive and then they came back. But what
- 20:42Speaker 1: goes down must come up, or what goes up must
- 20:44Speaker 1: come down. So yeah, there's this thing in the tail,
- 20:47Speaker 1: whatever way you look at it. But it's nice because
- 20:52Speaker 1: I mean, you can run forever on the promenade, but
- 20:55Speaker 1: every now and then it's nice to have a little challenge,
- 20:57Speaker 1: a little hill and to test yourself. Yes, that would
- 21:01Speaker 1: be good. I've been involved with the half marathon ever
- 21:03Speaker 1: since it's started. I don't know how many years it
- 21:05Speaker 1: is now, but it is many. And obviously we've got
- 21:08Speaker 1: to thank Ray Johnson, the race director for all his
- 21:12Speaker 1: input and the very experienced runner run runs the London
- 21:15Speaker 1: Marathon nearly every year of running money for raising money
- 21:19Speaker 1: for the Kent Association for the Blind. But he does
- 21:23Speaker 1: love to get people running for the teams like you
- 21:27Speaker 1: lot running for their own charity. And so how can
- 21:30Speaker 1: people get involved? Do they just have to get an
- 21:33Speaker 1: entry form or do they come to you first?
- 21:35Speaker 2: Yeah, please just get directly in touch with us. So
- 21:37Speaker 2: you can email me contact at Southotmind dot uk and
- 21:42Speaker 2: we should have further information on about the half mathon
- 21:45Speaker 2: team on our website as well. So even if you
- 21:48Speaker 2: already signed up to the marathon and would just like
- 21:50Speaker 2: to you know, do a bit of sign raising on
- 21:52Speaker 2: the side, were happily you know, you're more than welcome
- 21:56Speaker 2: to join the team. Yeah, just get in touch with
- 22:00Speaker 2: contact at southolate Mind to talk to brilliant.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Okay, so I mean it is a big, busy day,
- 22:04Speaker 1: a buzzy day as well. I don't know, let me
- 22:07Speaker 1: think I'll probably seven or eight under turn up. I
- 22:09Speaker 1: think in the past it's uh. And so you don't
- 22:14Speaker 1: take lightly a half marathon, you know, so if you're
- 22:18Speaker 1: thinking about you should be training already. I wouldn't expect
- 22:20Speaker 1: that new couch to five k to do it just yet.
- 22:24Speaker 1: But it's yeah, so please keep in touch and we'd
- 22:27Speaker 1: love to see you on the day. And will you
- 22:29Speaker 1: be up there with a little stall as well?
- 22:31Speaker 2: You think definitely, Yeah, we'll have we'll have colleagues there
- 22:34Speaker 2: there with with with tabos on and representing the charity. Yeah,
- 22:39Speaker 2: it's really good day.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Okay, right, well we're going to do now if we're
- 22:42Speaker 1: going to switch to something that's coming up in December,
- 22:44Speaker 1: and we're going to talk about the Firewalk last So
- 22:47Speaker 1: you've got something that's coming up in December. You tried
- 22:50Speaker 1: it for the first time last year. It's very successful,
- 22:53Speaker 1: and so tell us about the Mental al fraun.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Yeah, mental health. It seems seems to early to be
- 22:59Speaker 2: talking about Christmas, but this is our yeah, big Christmas
- 23:01Speaker 2: fundraiser coming up on the seventh of December. It's going
- 23:05Speaker 2: to be a five kilometer fun run along the Lees.
- 23:09Speaker 2: So sticking with the theme of running that we've got
- 23:11Speaker 2: to going today. Yeah. Last year was our first year
- 23:15Speaker 2: and we had a great turnout, brilliant support from the
- 23:17Speaker 2: local community. The idea is everyone dresses up as an elf, families,
- 23:22Speaker 2: it doesn't matter again and your running ability. It's just
- 23:24Speaker 2: a fun run. It's up and down the Lees following
- 23:27Speaker 2: the Park Run route and just a great opportunity to
- 23:29Speaker 2: kind of kind of you know, promote the charity and
- 23:33Speaker 2: and have some get the festive get the festive mood, right.
- 23:36Speaker 1: So there was a lot of there was a lot
- 23:38Speaker 1: of children there last year, wasn't it with appearance and
- 23:40Speaker 1: unfortunately the weather was a bit grim.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Wasn't it last year? Wasn't on our side, but everyone
- 23:43Speaker 2: turned out. I was in the festive spirit. I mean,
- 23:45Speaker 2: you obviously know you're on the your pa on the day.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I was the driest person because I was. I was
- 23:50Speaker 1: in the bandstand. I was lovely. I was charging people
- 23:53Speaker 1: a pound to come up and join me. But yeah,
- 23:56Speaker 1: so right, recap on that one. When is there how
- 23:58Speaker 1: can people get in touched? And you do, I've got
- 24:03Speaker 1: here sort of an early bird ticket.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Yeah, We've got an early bird so we call it
- 24:07Speaker 2: Eager Elf and as a early bird ticket, and that's
- 24:09Speaker 2: coming out in the first of September. So this is
- 24:11Speaker 2: the first little bit of promotion that I've done on
- 24:13Speaker 2: mental health. But yeah, look to our website, looks to
- 24:16Speaker 2: our social media or from the first of September, and
- 24:19Speaker 2: we'll be rolling up those Eager Elf discounted tickets.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Great, and I'm also hoping that, as we did last year,
- 24:26Speaker 1: it went down so well that we'll have a warm up.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I've got to chat up my warm up lady. I
- 24:30Speaker 1: won't tell you who it is in case you can't
- 24:32Speaker 1: make it. So yeah, so that is really one for
- 24:35Speaker 1: the diary. It's in my diary, and we're going to
- 24:37Speaker 1: switch this theme now from fire songs to this one
- 24:42Speaker 1: now played. This is something that I love playing actually,
- 24:45Speaker 1: especially when I do events outside sort of events that
- 24:50Speaker 1: involve running with the family. So you know where I'm
- 24:53Speaker 1: coming from here we go level forty two. So what
- 25:17Speaker 1: a great song. I absolutely love that song because just
- 25:19Speaker 1: sums up what I like to do on a Sunday morning.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Just watch, you know, the family, especially when there's a
- 25:25Speaker 1: junior run. You know, you get a big run like
- 25:27Speaker 1: we did at Clacton. There was a half marathon, four hundred,
- 25:32Speaker 1: ten k another four hundred, but there was a seventy
- 25:35Speaker 1: five in a junior run, and you know some of
- 25:38Speaker 1: them are really tiny and the parents run with them
- 25:40Speaker 1: and we just wait till the last one coms in.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Normally I've got a list of all their names and
- 25:45Speaker 1: it's absolutely fantastic. So does a great song Running with
- 25:47Speaker 1: a family. Level forty two. Right now we're getting onto
- 25:51Speaker 1: the big events that we've been talking about fire related music.
- 25:55Speaker 1: But you have got a firewalk coming up, Joe, so
- 25:59Speaker 1: very exciting us all about that.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah, You've been built up to it with your fire
- 26:02Speaker 2: thing yea, and yeah, so we've got firewalk coming up.
- 26:05Speaker 2: So it's a really exciting challenge event on Friday, the
- 26:09Speaker 2: twelfth of September starting at seven thirty pm at three
- 26:13Speaker 2: Hills in Folkston. So to those who aren't aware of
- 26:16Speaker 2: what a firewalk is, it is pretty much in the name.
- 26:19Speaker 2: It's a it's a challenge event where participants walk across
- 26:23Speaker 2: a length of turf that's been there's been little fire
- 26:26Speaker 2: with coals raked down and then so that's so they're
- 26:30Speaker 2: sort of more more Ember like and then the idea
- 26:32Speaker 2: is that you you walk the coals the whole lengths
- 26:35Speaker 2: as a challenge event, you know, sort of overcome the
- 26:38Speaker 2: fear of it and push your limits. And this is
- 26:42Speaker 2: this is something that's organized by a bi professional company,
- 26:45Speaker 2: by UK Firewalk, who are the UK's leading firewalk company
- 26:48Speaker 2: and actually actually led by by someone who's got a
- 26:51Speaker 2: Guinness World Record in firewalking. He just walked the longest distance.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Yeah he did the fire Yeah, all right. I've actually
- 27:00Speaker 1: seen the firewalk many years ago a colleague of mine,
- 27:03Speaker 1: Adam Dowling, he got roped into it and I went
- 27:07Speaker 1: down there and they all disappeared into a classroom to
- 27:09Speaker 1: start with, and there was a big like motivation session.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Is that the sort of thing that happens.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So Scott who leads UK Firewalk, he gives
- 27:19Speaker 2: everyone a safety briefing before a bit of a motivational
- 27:22Speaker 2: talk to get everyone excited enough for the walk. Although
- 27:26Speaker 2: I will add it's it's not a dangerous event at all.
- 27:30Speaker 2: They obviously say that they've they said they've never had
- 27:33Speaker 2: an injury in all their years of doing it or
- 27:34Speaker 2: even a blister, So you know, it's more of the
- 27:36Speaker 2: psychological overcoming those barriers and and facing the challenge that
- 27:40Speaker 2: that is the real element of challenge for this event. Yeah,
- 27:45Speaker 2: and Scott goes through the safety safety points of everyone
- 27:47Speaker 2: to make sure that it is a safe and safe event.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Right, So how can people get involved with that? And
- 27:52Speaker 1: obviously this is raising funds forth Kent mind.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Yeah, this is raising fund for South miss a sponsored event.
- 27:58Speaker 2: So yeah, this we're proudly sponsored by SAGA this year,
- 28:02Speaker 2: which is great. So so thank you very much to
- 28:04Speaker 2: everyone at SAGA and to all the employees who have
- 28:07Speaker 2: signed up so far for the firewalk team. We're really
- 28:10Speaker 2: looking forward to welcoming you on the day. Also supported
- 28:13Speaker 2: by Church and Dwight who are supporting us with products
- 28:16Speaker 2: on the day for the participants, and yeah, through employees
- 28:21Speaker 2: signing up and Sea Salt Corn will have actually donated
- 28:24Speaker 2: donated some love little items for participants as well, and
- 28:27Speaker 2: to sign up. It's really straightforward. If you just visit
- 28:29Speaker 2: our website South Kentmind dot org dot UK, you'll see
- 28:33Speaker 2: a page for our firewalk and there's a full full
- 28:36Speaker 2: web page there with a selection of FAQs. So frequently
- 28:40Speaker 2: frequently ask questions that that people have around the firewalk,
- 28:43Speaker 2: because obviously there are quite a few. And then a
- 28:46Speaker 2: little page at the bottom where you can sign up.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Individual entries is twenty pounds and we're encouraging sponsorship of
- 28:54Speaker 2: eighty pounds as well to maximize your impact. We also
- 28:58Speaker 2: offer team team tickets as well, up to up to
- 29:01Speaker 2: five So if you look into if you're looking for
- 29:03Speaker 2: an opportunity for team building spirits of a lifetime supporting
- 29:07Speaker 2: local mental health and this is this is for you is.
- 29:09Speaker 1: The one here. Okay, So are there any members of
- 29:12Speaker 1: your office team going in for it?
- 29:14Speaker 2: Everyone will be everyone will be on the side on
- 29:16Speaker 2: the side, right, So like yeah, yeah, team Tristan and Richard, Yeah,
- 29:20Speaker 2: we'll be on the we'll be in the side making
- 29:23Speaker 2: sure the day runs smoothly. There might be an opportunity
- 29:27Speaker 2: to walk the coles who knows.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I'll give it a go. There the team
- 29:31Speaker 1: listening in this morning.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Just up the road. They yeah, just up the road
- 29:33Speaker 2: Richard and and trists and are listening in. They're part
- 29:37Speaker 2: of the team writing, writing our grant applications and and
- 29:41Speaker 2: keeping the charity going. So yeah, shout them.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Right, Okay, So well that sounds really really like something
- 29:48Speaker 1: to That's another challenge, isn't it. It's all about doing
- 29:51Speaker 1: something outside the books, you know, and whilst there's you know,
- 29:56Speaker 1: is this going to be the initial fear, there's going
- 29:58Speaker 1: to be a talk. It's not as scary as it's sounds.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Doesn't burn your feet, And I think it's been quoted
- 30:04Speaker 1: saying he's got the feeling of just walking on hot sand.
- 30:07Speaker 1: But it's the fact that you're walking over hot it's
- 30:09Speaker 1: like walking on the biblecue, isn't it. You wouldn't do it,
- 30:13Speaker 1: But I mean it's not quite as bad as that,
- 30:15Speaker 1: but it's it's something that is just challenging. You know,
- 30:19Speaker 1: you might be a bit, a bit nervous, a bit scared,
- 30:22Speaker 1: but sometimes you have to do these things just outside
- 30:24Speaker 1: the box. It's a bit like I don't know, like
- 30:27Speaker 1: if you're doing a skydive or or a bungee jump
- 30:31Speaker 1: or something like that. You know it's not the sort
- 30:34Speaker 1: of thing you do every day, but God, give it
- 30:36Speaker 1: a go. Get a team together, but get all the
- 30:38Speaker 1: lads and the you know, get them, get them down there.
- 30:42Speaker 1: You know, it's just something that's it's something different and
- 30:45Speaker 1: you can be talking about it in the pub for
- 30:47Speaker 1: ages afterwards. So sorry, Jod, there's me banging on a
- 30:51Speaker 1: bit there. But anything else we've got to say about
- 30:54Speaker 1: the firewalk before we move on because we are quickly.
- 30:56Speaker 1: You're running out of time yet.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Time flies, isn't it. Yeah, just essentially that this is
- 31:00Speaker 2: a great opportunity to challenge yourself, like you said, as
- 31:03Speaker 2: a team or individually, if you want to give back
- 31:06Speaker 2: to local mental health charity to support a local great
- 31:10Speaker 2: cause who as I mentioned at the start, you know,
- 31:12Speaker 2: we fund ourselves entirely, so every every penny has a
- 31:16Speaker 2: real impact to local mental health in your community. Then yeah,
- 31:20Speaker 2: you can sign up on our website south Ka mind
- 31:22Speaker 2: talked you can.
- 31:23Speaker 1: So that's the main Portocore really, so everything we've talked
- 31:26Speaker 1: about today is on that website.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Everything we talked about half marathon, team firewalk, yeah, the
- 31:32Speaker 2: the Suicide Prevention Walk in September, everything's everything's on the website.
- 31:38Speaker 1: And the mental Health in December. So that is really
- 31:43Speaker 1: a good fun one to look out for and puts
- 31:45Speaker 1: you in the mood for Christmas, right Joe, Well, think
- 31:48Speaker 1: that's about it. We have discussed so many things today.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Have we left anything out before you go?
- 31:53Speaker 2: Well, we cover a lot of ground, but just just
- 31:55Speaker 2: a couple of final points on the charity. So if
- 31:58Speaker 2: if we can support your mental health or someone you know,
- 32:01Speaker 2: please do get in touch with us with South Kent
- 32:04Speaker 2: Mind one three three two five hundred nine zero or
- 32:08Speaker 2: emailing us at contact at south Kentmind dot org dot uk.
- 32:11Speaker 2: It's really important to reach out to start the conversation,
- 32:15Speaker 2: to speak to people as that's the first step towards
- 32:18Speaker 2: towards benefiting and mental health. We're also also always on
- 32:23Speaker 2: look out for donations to our shops shops I mentioned
- 32:25Speaker 2: so in Hive, Folktion and Dover, and if you'd like
- 32:29Speaker 2: to volunteers and support any of the activities and events
- 32:31Speaker 2: that I've talked about today. Please also get in touch
- 32:33Speaker 2: as well as we're always welcoming new volunteers.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Excellent. Well, Joe, thank you so much for coming in.
- 32:38Speaker 1: And I hope people out there have been listening to
- 32:40Speaker 1: this have kind of got a bit more of understanding
- 32:43Speaker 1: about mental health and what goes on is you know,
- 32:47Speaker 1: it's no good than sort of keeping it quiet these days.
- 32:50Speaker 1: These people are out there to help you, and once
- 32:52Speaker 1: they help you, you might find that they've got other
- 32:54Speaker 1: revenues you can try, and their little clubs and things.
- 32:58Speaker 1: So yeah, get in touch, don't keep it bottled up. Well,
- 33:02Speaker 1: thank you Joe for coming in.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Thanks Kevin, thanks very much.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Right, so we've got one more song We've got Oh,
- 33:07Speaker 1: we haven't got much time, but so this is one.
- 33:10Speaker 1: This is one I dragged it out of the archives.
- 33:12Speaker 1: This is one that I hope we don't need at
- 33:14Speaker 1: the firewalk is the Move and Fire Brigade next to me? Well,
- 33:47Speaker 1: the Move there from nineteen sixty eight, and that was
- 33:51Speaker 1: the last fire song that we're going to put in
- 33:53Speaker 1: the playlist because I really need to get on and
- 33:56Speaker 1: do bits work. I haven't got much time left, so
- 33:59Speaker 1: I'm going to get the crick it in that's for sure,
- 34:01Speaker 1: because Adriaan av probably well. Adrian will be here on
- 34:04Speaker 1: Saturday and we'll handle the all the football over to him.
- 34:10Speaker 1: So cricket Now. Folkstone won the toss at home to
- 34:13Speaker 1: the Moat. Cricket Club decided to bat and made a
- 34:16Speaker 1: whopping three hundred and eighty eight for three opener Rudra Dande,
- 34:20Speaker 1: scoring a massive two hundred and twenty one not out,
- 34:23Speaker 1: making him the highest scorer in the Kent Cricket League.
- 34:26Speaker 1: The second highest is Wilson Massey for Old Kofieans from
- 34:29Speaker 1: Southeast London with two hundred and seventeen. Oh. By the way,
- 34:33Speaker 1: Shazil Malleka chipped in with forty seven before he was
- 34:36Speaker 1: caught in Bold and when you think about it, Routra's
- 34:40Speaker 1: two hundred and twenty one was more than the total
- 34:43Speaker 1: made by the Moat, which was two hundred and three
- 34:45Speaker 1: all out. So great day of the two remember there
- 34:49Speaker 1: for Folkston. They won the match by one hundred and
- 34:51Speaker 1: eighty five runs. Saturday is another home game at the
- 34:55Speaker 1: Three Hills, this time against Broadstairs. Moving on to Hawkins
- 34:59Speaker 1: now with They lost the toss against Canterbury thirty eleven
- 35:02Speaker 1: so Canterbury batted first made one hundred and ninety one
- 35:05Speaker 1: for eight. Hawking's batters found their form after last week
- 35:09Speaker 1: and crews to one hundred and ninety three for just
- 35:11Speaker 1: two wickets, Terry Dunham scoring seventy five and Ashutosh Dejmuk
- 35:15Speaker 1: scoring one hundred and six not out. This week they
- 35:19Speaker 1: make the short trip to Ashford to play Willsborough, who
- 35:22Speaker 1: are eighth out of nine teams. In a low scoring
- 35:25Speaker 1: game at the Grove, I've bowled out Why Cricket Club.
- 35:28Speaker 1: They bowled them all out for just seventy Troy Harding
- 35:31Speaker 1: and Grant Channon taking four wickets apiece. I have then
- 35:34Speaker 1: made seventy three for six, winning the game by four wickets.
- 35:38Speaker 1: This Saturday Hive who they stay in second place. There
- 35:42Speaker 1: are homes to Deal Victoria and Barnes Close who are
- 35:44Speaker 1: in third place, so another tight game there. This is
- 35:47Speaker 1: the division that is really tightening up at the top there.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I've Green lost the toss to Nelson Cricket Club who
- 35:53Speaker 1: decided to bat, making one hundred and ninety eight for seven.
- 35:56Speaker 1: The Green batted bravely, making one hundred and eighty four
- 35:59Speaker 1: for nine, game by just fourteen runs. This week the
- 36:02Speaker 1: Greener on the road again, facing a trip to Herne
- 36:05Speaker 1: Bay sil what had a welcome win against Tenadon, staying
- 36:09Speaker 1: in eighth place out of ten, remembering teams in ninth
- 36:12Speaker 1: and tenth go down. Tenadent batted first, making one hundred
- 36:16Speaker 1: and ninety four for six. Silould then replied with one
- 36:19Speaker 1: hundred and ninety five for two, winning the game by
- 36:22Speaker 1: eight wickets, Ollie Harrison doing most of the damage with
- 36:25Speaker 1: eighty two. This week, Salwood are at home to whist
- 36:29Speaker 1: Ball who are ninth, so this is a must win
- 36:31Speaker 1: game to keep their noses out of the relegation zone.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Sipton Park batted first at home against Addington and made
- 36:37Speaker 1: a respectable two hundred and twelve all out. However, Addington
- 36:41Speaker 1: were in good form and made two hundred and thirteen
- 36:43Speaker 1: for five, so winning the game by five wickets. The
- 36:47Speaker 1: SIPs are mid table, fifth out of ten and this
- 36:49Speaker 1: week traveled to kings Hill who are eighth. So most
- 36:53Speaker 1: teams in the Kent League have just three games left,
- 36:55Speaker 1: including Saturday, and there is a couple of promotion and
- 36:58Speaker 1: relegation issues in our local clubs, so I'll do my
- 37:01Speaker 1: best to keep you updated week by week until the
- 37:04Speaker 1: end of the season. Right, Okay, so we've got a
- 37:07Speaker 1: little song now, we're going to play this. This is
- 37:09Speaker 1: from Atomic Kitten, and we might just finish off with
- 37:12Speaker 1: this one because we are very close to coming up
- 37:15Speaker 1: to the end of the show. If you see you
- 37:28Speaker 1: walking down the street staring at the sky, you're dragging
- 37:34Speaker 1: my two feet.
- 37:36Speaker 2: You just passed me back.
- 37:38Speaker 1: It still makes me craver. You can make me. Well,
- 37:48Speaker 1: that's it from me for this week. Thanks to Joe
- 37:50Speaker 1: for coming in. I'll not be on air on Saturday
- 37:54Speaker 1: a adv flying solo, but I'll be other part run
- 37:56Speaker 1: where blue is the Color. I see you all next
