- 0:07Speaker 1: Time for a World Series preview. It's powered by MLB
- 0:10Speaker 1: Perfect Inning twenty five. So I think we need to
- 0:13Speaker 1: start with the roadmap for an upset. The Dodgers are favored.
- 0:19Speaker 1: How do the Blue Jays figure out a way to
- 0:22Speaker 1: win a series against a team that has four number
- 0:24Speaker 1: one starters and just dusted the top record in the sport.
- 0:30Speaker 2: It was not a good series.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It was an entertaining series on an individual game by
- 0:35Speaker 1: game basis. But Tod Father, if you're on the Blue Jays,
- 0:39Speaker 1: how do you crack the Dodgers' pitching staff?
- 0:43Speaker 3: Well, I think you got to think of it another way.
- 0:45Speaker 3: How do you keep putting pressure pitching wise? I think
- 0:50Speaker 3: it's going to come down to the Blue Jays pitching.
- 0:52Speaker 3: They got to find a way to stop these guys
- 0:54Speaker 3: from scoring. I think that's the way you got to
- 0:56Speaker 3: go about it. The Dodgers put up a lot of runs,
- 0:59Speaker 3: and guess what, they find ways to put pressure on teams.
- 1:02Speaker 3: I think the Blue Jays staff is the number one
- 1:05Speaker 3: thing they gotta do because they can hit. We know
- 1:07Speaker 3: they can eventually hit. They've done it before and they
- 1:10Speaker 3: play well in close games. So if they can find
- 1:12Speaker 3: a way, they're pitching staff to keep them at bay
- 1:16Speaker 3: three four five runs going into the seventh d eighth inning,
- 1:19Speaker 3: I think they'll have a chance. And I think that's
- 1:21Speaker 3: the biggest thing they have to worry about, is keeping
- 1:25Speaker 3: those batters at bay. And if they can do that,
- 1:27Speaker 3: we know that eventually they're gonna those bats are gonna
- 1:29Speaker 3: come alive. But it's got to be right from Jump
- 1:32Speaker 3: Street and again, whoever they start in the beginning, they
- 1:35Speaker 3: got to ride that wave a little bit and keep going.
- 1:38Speaker 3: So if they can keep the hitters at bay, they're
- 1:40Speaker 3: gonna be all right.
- 1:41Speaker 1: In my opinion, we're showing some of the starters for
- 1:44Speaker 1: the Dodgers, like Almamoto and Glass now right now, Toronto
- 1:48Speaker 1: makes contact.
- 1:49Speaker 2: So did the Bruers.
- 1:51Speaker 1: But Toronto's got a lot more slug and star power
- 1:55Speaker 1: in there with guys like Springer and Vladdie and even here,
- 1:58Speaker 1: I'll bring up a good example because he's been my
- 2:00Speaker 1: favorite to watch it the plate. Ernie Clement as a
- 2:04Speaker 1: four percent k rate in the postseason and his slogan
- 2:06Speaker 1: percentage just six something. I mean, that's the kind of
- 2:10Speaker 1: guy that he needs to keep doing what he's doing.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I mean, he's top to strike out and he'll rack
- 2:15Speaker 1: doubles for you.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Here's how the Blue Jays win this series. They survive
- 2:20Speaker 4: against the starting pitchers of the Dodgers and their starters
- 2:24Speaker 4: match and then they get into the bullpen because guess
- 2:27Speaker 4: Roki and Vessio. But if they can get some of
- 2:29Speaker 4: these guys out early and make them get to some
- 2:31Speaker 4: of the other guys that haven't been as good, that's
- 2:34Speaker 4: their shot. Because if you're just gonna let snell Yamamoto
- 2:39Speaker 4: glass now and show hey goes six seven innings, you're
- 2:43Speaker 4: gonna be in trouble because that means one they're doing well,
- 2:45Speaker 4: you're not hitting two. That means Dave Roberts can use
- 2:48Speaker 4: to use Vessi and Sazaki a lot in the bullpen
- 2:51Speaker 4: try to figure it out from there. So I think
- 2:53Speaker 4: the key to this is how well do the Blue
- 2:55Speaker 4: Jays starters match the Dodger starters, because I think both
- 3:00Speaker 4: teams are going to score some runs yep, and I
- 3:03Speaker 4: feel like both bullpens will have some hits and some misses.
- 3:06Speaker 4: But if the Blue Jays starters can match the Dodger
- 3:10Speaker 4: stars give them a chance. I think if they can
- 3:13Speaker 4: knock them out every once in a while early that's
- 3:15Speaker 4: their shot. Then you get the Sheans, and you get
- 3:18Speaker 4: some other guys that just aren't as as not as good,
- 3:21Speaker 4: but as I don't know good in the bullpen, right,
- 3:26Speaker 4: I don't know. That to me seems like the key.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Okay, So if you're the Blue Jays, how do you
- 3:31Speaker 1: prevent the Dodgers starters from going so deep into games?
- 3:36Speaker 4: Fell off a bunch of pitches, don't strike out a
- 3:38Speaker 4: lot because but don't also have first pitch out. So
- 3:40Speaker 4: they do do that too, that's my question.
- 3:42Speaker 2: They do early. They're swinging team.
- 3:45Speaker 1: The Brewers aren't. Actually the Brewers aren't contact team. But
- 3:48Speaker 1: what made them unique this season was that they don't chase.
- 3:50Speaker 1: They were one of the best walks chase right whatever,
- 3:53Speaker 1: throw it all out the window. For the last series,
- 3:55Speaker 1: all of that was gone. They were swinging, chasing at
- 3:58Speaker 1: great secondary stuff. But how did the Blue Jays do this?
- 4:01Speaker 1: Because often like, what was the one game where they
- 4:03Speaker 1: really got said? It was a Game three. Everything they
- 4:06Speaker 1: were doing was that then the first three pitches. So
- 4:08Speaker 1: it works great if it works the ball's falling in
- 4:11Speaker 1: the right spot. If not, I mean you might look
- 4:13Speaker 1: up and be like, damn, even glass now is at
- 4:16Speaker 1: fifty pitches through five innings.
- 4:20Speaker 2: What do you do? I just hope that the ball
- 4:22Speaker 2: falls in the right spot.
- 4:24Speaker 4: I don't know, Listen, I don't know what you do, Listen.
- 4:28Speaker 4: I think I think it's gonna be a tough series
- 4:31Speaker 4: for the Blue Jays, I do. I think the Dodgers
- 4:32Speaker 4: are just a better team one through twenty six. And
- 4:34Speaker 4: that's the problem that every team is run into. With
- 4:36Speaker 4: the Dodgers, That's why I've had them number one of
- 4:38Speaker 4: my power rankings since day one. Claudia, Hey, I think
- 4:43Speaker 4: I think they can get a couple of games, though.
- 4:45Speaker 4: I think that if they can get it, if they
- 4:47Speaker 4: win Game one and put some pressure on the Dodgers
- 4:50Speaker 4: and go to La and maybe steal one here and
- 4:53Speaker 4: there and get it back to Toronto like they did
- 4:54Speaker 4: for six and seven, this crowd's gonna go crazy. So
- 4:58Speaker 4: that that's kind of how you have to do. You
- 5:00Speaker 4: have to strike early, steal a game somehow, someone hits
- 5:03Speaker 4: a home run late, or the Dodgers make an error
- 5:06Speaker 4: or something and they steal a game, maybe steal a
- 5:09Speaker 4: base or two. I think one thing that the Jays
- 5:11Speaker 4: can do, and they don't do a ton of this
- 5:12Speaker 4: is they can run on the Dodgers. I feel like
- 5:14Speaker 4: glass now Snell you can run a little bit, and
- 5:17Speaker 4: especially when their Suzaki comes in you get guys on
- 5:20Speaker 4: you can run. So I don't know.

- 6:36Speaker 1: the really famous like headliner coaching wise for the Blue Jays,
- 6:42Speaker 1: is actually their hitting coach this year. John Schneider's done
- 6:45Speaker 1: a really nice job and he keeps gaining experience. But
- 6:48Speaker 1: they love Dave Popkins. I mean even casual fans know
- 6:52Speaker 1: who he is.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And he was pushed away by the Twins. Right Twins,
- 6:57Speaker 2: let him go. He's there.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Blue Jays play have talked him up a ton like.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I heard one quote from I think it was Varshow
- 7:03Speaker 1: this series, who said, let me give you the difference
- 7:05Speaker 1: in the past, the way our hitting instruction and coaching
- 7:09Speaker 1: staff was set up. If I had to make a
- 7:11Speaker 1: mechanical tweak, it would take me weeks, if not months,
- 7:13Speaker 1: to get back on track now it's days and that
- 7:17Speaker 1: he lets everybody be themselves. So with all of that
- 7:20Speaker 1: being said, if you're a Blue Jays hitter and he says, hey,
- 7:23Speaker 1: be yourself, if you're a swinger, you're not going to
- 7:27Speaker 1: be like, Okay, well, I want to get deep into
- 7:29Speaker 1: account every ab against this starter because we want to
- 7:32Speaker 1: get them out of the game and get to the bullpen.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Right, you're going to keep just playing the way that
- 7:35Speaker 2: you play.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Yeah, and if that's being ready first pitch for a
- 7:40Speaker 3: pitch you're looking for, it's ready to attack. And I
- 7:43Speaker 3: think that's a great concept. I've had coaches like that,
- 7:47Speaker 3: We're not going to tinker with anything. Really, maybe something
- 7:49Speaker 3: in your mindset, what you're looking for. Are you looking
- 7:51Speaker 3: out over, you're looking in, what types of pitches you're
- 7:54Speaker 3: looking for. You don't necessarily need to tinker with somebody's
- 7:57Speaker 3: stance all the time and footing and everything else. You
- 8:00Speaker 3: need to get in their mindset. And I think I
- 8:02Speaker 3: think that's one of the biggest parts that people need
- 8:05Speaker 3: to understand, Like you're getting lessons from somebody, you don't
- 8:08Speaker 3: need to revamp or change anything. You need to change
- 8:10Speaker 3: their mindset of thinking, do what you do best. Let's
- 8:14Speaker 3: let's figure out what you do best as a hitter,
- 8:17Speaker 3: and whatever is the stuff that's you can't do best
- 8:19Speaker 3: at let's lay off of that until two strikes. Be you,
- 8:22Speaker 3: go out there and that's what got us there. For
- 8:25Speaker 3: the Toronto Blue Jays, be you, and let's focus on
- 8:28Speaker 3: what's God is there and go out there and win
- 8:29Speaker 3: a championship.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Okay, so I feel like we've at least painted somewhat
- 8:34Speaker 1: of a roadmap for the Blue Jays.
- 8:37Speaker 2: What about for the Dodgers.
- 8:38Speaker 4: I mean, just be the Dodgers.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Just be the Dodgers. Just do exactly what you've been
- 8:43Speaker 1: doing to a t go out and play. Is there
- 8:45Speaker 1: is there a weakness to exploit Blue Jays?
- 8:48Speaker 4: The bullpen, it's the bullpen.
- 8:51Speaker 2: It's John Schneiner might do it differently this round.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I think he's gonna have to use lefties.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Use lefties.
- 8:57Speaker 1: But I also think that you need to get more
- 8:59Speaker 1: creative with I mean, I know I talked about this
- 9:01Speaker 1: on the postgame show last night. Like Basset, maybe Gossman
- 9:05Speaker 1: pitches an inning or two on a throw day, you
- 9:08Speaker 1: don't think that you think that's that's doing too much Nope.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Like.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Roster, Gosman's going game one or two. Right, it's either
- 9:17Speaker 1: Gosman or your savage. I gotta look at what the
- 9:19Speaker 1: you know, how many days it's been. But probably a savage, right,
- 9:22Speaker 1: because Gosmin.
- 9:25Speaker 4: He's got three days, so he's got plenty of Yeah.
- 9:27Speaker 1: But but my point is goss and you savage, you
- 9:30Speaker 1: might look at a little bit differently. But but Gossman's
- 9:32Speaker 1: veteran guy and on a long term deal and knows
- 9:36Speaker 1: how to take care of himself. He's been in the
- 9:38Speaker 1: league for a minute.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I do think he pitches game one or two. In
- 9:42Speaker 2: between that and his next start, he could give you
- 9:45Speaker 2: an inning or two.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I know it wasn't beautiful last night, right, he got
- 9:48Speaker 1: himself in a little bit of trouble. But if that's
- 9:49Speaker 1: what it takes, because you don't have confidence in some
- 9:51Speaker 1: of the other guys, like I'm okay with that. You know,
- 9:54Speaker 1: if the splitter is the equalizer against the Dodgers in
- 9:57Speaker 1: a certain pocket of the lineup, and it's his throw day.
- 9:59Speaker 1: When they said he throws thirty plus pitches on his throw.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Day, give me in an inning.
- 10:04Speaker 1: It wouldn't be the first time this has been done
- 10:05Speaker 1: often top either Patrick Corbyn for the twenty nineteen Nats.
- 10:09Speaker 2: When did the Red Sox win eighteen? It was Purcella.
- 10:13Speaker 1: It was three of them that we all saw right
- 10:16Speaker 1: that were coming out of the bullpen on throw days
- 10:18Speaker 1: and people were like, oh, hell, score a brilliant whatever.
- 10:20Speaker 1: It's like, Yeah, veteran guys on their throat day are
- 10:22Speaker 1: giving you an inning.
- 10:22Speaker 2: And they were fine.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I think it all matters of where they are in
- 10:26Speaker 3: the series. If they're down, yeah, of course, if they're
- 10:29Speaker 3: doing well, I don't necessarily think you should bring them in.
- 10:32Speaker 3: You should save them for the opportunity to come in
- 10:35Speaker 3: either Game five or Game six. What might have you there?
- 10:38Speaker 3: So I think, yes, I love that decision. I think
- 10:40Speaker 3: that's great. If you're down too, well, oh there's no
- 10:44Speaker 3: holds bars. You're going out and doing whatever you think
- 10:46Speaker 3: you can to find a.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Way to win.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Okay, And I'm with you on the home field part.
- 10:52Speaker 4: I mean, Dodgers went to and one against some Snell
- 10:54Speaker 4: dealt against them this year already kershawb Scherzer in that game,
- 11:00Speaker 4: famous game this year and the third game the Blue
- 11:03Speaker 4: Jay's bet to Dodgers late.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Okay, the Snell one makes sense.
- 11:07Speaker 1: The Suzer Kershaw one, I mean, Kershaw is probably not
- 11:11Speaker 1: going to be much of a factor, and Max is
- 11:14Speaker 1: a different Max. If you see that Max, that Max
- 11:18Speaker 1: can work for forty. Right, you need just one of
- 11:23Speaker 1: those as as your bridge, as your pivot later in
- 11:27Speaker 1: the series to get through the back end of the
- 11:29Speaker 1: rotation and win.
- 11:31Speaker 2: A game four.
- 11:33Speaker 1: You are relying on some experience there. That's actually a
- 11:37Speaker 1: big part of this is Max and Bieber.
- 11:41Speaker 2: What are you going to get?
- 11:42Speaker 4: Bieber needs to have the good stuff, not the stuff
- 11:44Speaker 4: he had last night though. That's stuff he had last night.
- 11:47Speaker 4: It wasn't good.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not going to work against the Dodgers.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And we've seen two bad and one good from Bieber
- 11:56Speaker 1: other one. Is there any way to like it's just
- 11:59Speaker 1: an inconsistency thing when you're coming off surgery.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Actually, just keep talking about it.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I guess extra rest does that make any difference. He's
- 12:07Speaker 1: gonna get a lot of rest, right, He's gonna have
- 12:10Speaker 1: eight or nine days.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Yeah, over a week.
- 12:12Speaker 4: He starts game three when he pitched Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Since she's gonna have a week.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's next Monday. I think that's probably good. Okay,
- 12:23Speaker 1: I don't know, but.
- 12:24Speaker 4: I'm fascinated about how you Savage does against the Dodgers. M.
- 12:29Speaker 4: I haven't seen him. You know, America is actually handled
- 12:33Speaker 4: him pretty well.
- 12:34Speaker 2: First start.
- 12:34Speaker 1: They really handled him well. So he also didn't have
- 12:36Speaker 1: his good splitter in that first Yeah, it's a field pitch, right.
- 12:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know. It's gonna be fascinating with his
- 12:44Speaker 4: angle and they've never seen it. I don't know. We'll
- 12:46Speaker 4: see how it does.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Dogers are really good at laying off pitches.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Dodgers are really good. Rogers get strikeouts. Blue Jays don't
- 12:53Speaker 4: strike out. A lot of interesting matchups in this series.
- 12:57Speaker 4: A lot of blue too. If you like blue, this
- 12:59Speaker 4: is your series.
- 12:59Speaker 1: And here's the one thing I will say for those
- 13:04Speaker 1: that are putting out, Oh, the Blue Jays can rescue baseball.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Shut up. That is way too much.
- 13:12Speaker 1: If the Dodgers win again, like, stop it, that is ridiculous.
- 13:20Speaker 1: The Dodgers paeril is like four hundred ish and the
- 13:22Speaker 1: Blue Jays perils like two eighty or something like. Stop
- 13:26Speaker 1: First of all, yeah, they're two teams that that definitely
- 13:28Speaker 1: spend tod father. But let's not act like if the
- 13:30Speaker 1: Dodgers went back to back World Series titles, the sport
- 13:33Speaker 1: is broken forever. It's just it felt this way last
- 13:37Speaker 1: year with Yankees and Dodgers. It's like, we never get
- 13:40Speaker 1: a matchup like that and we can't just enjoy it
- 13:42Speaker 1: one time.
- 13:43Speaker 2: We never get a matchup.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Like that, and everyone's like, ah, this is just like
- 13:47Speaker 1: the two big teams.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Okay, it never happens.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And having won that much over the past, you know,
- 13:55Speaker 1: a few decades, right, the Yankees dynasty is a long
- 13:58Speaker 1: time ago at this point.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:00Speaker 3: And if you're a president or GM or one of
- 14:02Speaker 3: those guys and the Dodgers do win, it's like, Okay,
- 14:05Speaker 3: maybe I need to start spending a little more to
- 14:07Speaker 3: get this, get my team going, and stuff like that.
- 14:10Speaker 3: And there's nothing wrong with that. They had an opportunity
- 14:13Speaker 3: to get guys, and guys said, you know what, if
- 14:15Speaker 3: you're gonna pay me, I'm coming over, and I'd like
- 14:17Speaker 3: my opportunities here. The end goal as a baseball player,
- 14:21Speaker 3: Number one is to win the World Series. Number two
- 14:24Speaker 3: is to provide for your family, of course, but you
- 14:27Speaker 3: want to I mean you can flip flop that too
- 14:30Speaker 3: as well. I mean, family always comes first. But as
- 14:32Speaker 3: a baseball guy, when you're playing, you want to win
- 14:34Speaker 3: a World Series and you want to take care of
- 14:36Speaker 3: your family, so they both kind of go together. So yeah,
- 14:39Speaker 3: if you're gonna pay me, that's great. I can provide
- 14:41Speaker 3: for my family and have the best opportunity to win
- 14:43Speaker 3: a World Series. So why doesn't every president try and
- 14:45Speaker 3: do that? We don't know that answer. So it's just
- 14:49Speaker 3: part of baseball. And if the Dodgers win, I think
- 14:52Speaker 3: it's fine for baseball too. If you don't like or
- 14:55Speaker 3: play better that old adage that's all or get better players.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Yeah, Freddy Freeman has been incredible for them during his Dodgers' tenure.
- 15:03Speaker 1: He's not a five hundred million dollar player. He's a
- 15:05Speaker 1: player anybody could have signed. Mookie anyone could have traded
- 15:08Speaker 1: for Initially. First of all, the Red Sox also are
- 15:10Speaker 1: a big, big, big market, and they somehow felt like
- 15:13Speaker 1: he was He was a cast.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Monty was a castle.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Will Smith they signed, Yeah, anyone could have had Kek Yep.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Tay Oscar was signed a one year deal last year.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Andy PaaS was an international free agent. That Gil Rojas was,
- 15:28Speaker 4: you know, does not make it a lot.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates, which everyone was freaking out

- 15:34Speaker 2: Complete non factors, right.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I'm not going to act like they don't have resources,

- 15:40Speaker 2: It's not just the resources. There are other teams.
- 15:43Speaker 4: They traded for Glass. They traded for Glass, and obviously
- 15:45Speaker 4: they were able to sign him, but they traded for him.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Yes, Me's.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Have spent almost as much as them. They did not

- 17:30Speaker 1: base covering the Giants, and wow, we've got.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Work to do. Susan.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Great to see you, and I'll start with this your
- 17:37Speaker 1: shock factor when you saw Tony Botello as the main
- 17:41Speaker 1: man leading away to manage the San Francisco Giants and
- 17:45Speaker 1: as of us doing this this second, it's not done,
- 17:47Speaker 1: but it does sound like it's heading towards that direction.
- 17:50Speaker 2: So what do you think?
- 17:52Speaker 6: Well, you know, Andy Baggerley from the Athletic has been
- 17:55Speaker 6: mentioning Tony Vitello quite a lot, in fact most really
- 18:00Speaker 6: ever since this job opened up. So am I surprised, yes? Shocked? No,
- 18:07Speaker 6: because we knew that the name was out there there.
- 18:10Speaker 6: I think there are some family connections with Tennessee University
- 18:14Speaker 6: of Tennessee. Obviously, the Giants have taken or acquired some
- 18:20Speaker 6: Tennessee players, including Blade Tied Wallen. Of course, Drew Gilbert
- 18:25Speaker 6: is on the big league team, so they definitely have
- 18:28Speaker 6: some interest in those kinds of guys. It's stunning in
- 18:34Speaker 6: that he has no pro experience, neither playing nor coaching.
- 18:39Speaker 6: That's virtually unheard of. But we know Buster Posey's bold, right.
- 18:44Speaker 6: I pulled off the Devers deal six weeks before the
- 18:46Speaker 6: trade deadline out of nowhere, so I think this potentially
- 18:50Speaker 6: is another big swing from Buster Posey.
- 18:54Speaker 4: Okay, what's the connection between Buster, Posey, and Tony. I
- 18:58Speaker 4: tried to find one along the way. You mentioned Tennessee.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Buster went to Florida State. Is there something I'm missing
- 19:04Speaker 4: here that they're so connected and they have a relationship from.
- 19:08Speaker 6: I believe someone in his wife's family has a Tennessee connection.
- 19:12Speaker 6: So yeah, there's that. But also you know that in baseball,
- 19:17Speaker 6: you know what a small world it is. Aja everybody
- 19:20Speaker 6: knows everybody, and when you're talking to you know they
- 19:23Speaker 6: took a player from Tennessee. When you were talking two
- 19:27Speaker 6: players in the draft who are from a school, you
- 19:29Speaker 6: get to know pretty much everyone there. Now, this is
- 19:32Speaker 6: Buster's first year as the top baseball executive, but you know,
- 19:37Speaker 6: he's got a huge bunch of people in the front
- 19:40Speaker 6: office helping him who have experience. I certainly think that
- 19:43Speaker 6: Jeff Barry knows probably everyone at Tennessee. After a long
- 19:47Speaker 6: career of being an agent. Zach Manzien's obviously been in
- 19:51Speaker 6: numerous front offices and probably as well acquainted with everyone there.
- 19:55Speaker 6: I think they like the job he's done there. You
- 19:57Speaker 6: can't argue with the success that he's had. I have
- 20:01Speaker 6: seen some people kind of compare this a little bit
- 20:03Speaker 6: to Gabe Kapler two point zero. You know, somebody younger
- 20:08Speaker 6: and very outside the box. Uh, so we'll see, you
- 20:13Speaker 6: know that maybe they're in one of those we swing
- 20:15Speaker 6: from the younger guy outside of the box to the older,
- 20:18Speaker 6: more established manager to the younger guy again. But this
- 20:22Speaker 6: this one is very bold.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Yeah, not along those lines. Do you think a college
- 20:29Speaker 3: manager can translate to a professional manager at the major
- 20:34Speaker 3: league level without really any experience coaching at that level?
- 20:39Speaker 6: You know, it just hasn't. It's been done so rarely.
- 20:41Speaker 6: Everybody talks about, you know, Pat Murphy, but he had
- 20:45Speaker 6: coached for for a while in the minors, you know, certainly,
- 20:50Speaker 6: you know, and he'd been on staff, so you know,
- 20:54Speaker 6: go back to Bobby Winkle maybe, and even he had
- 20:57Speaker 6: had time on a big league staff. So so it's
- 21:00Speaker 6: really just such an unknown. If you're a team that
- 21:04Speaker 6: has a lot of young players, maybe, but the Giants
- 21:07Speaker 6: aren't all young players. They do have five guys who
- 21:10Speaker 6: are on long term contracts who are more veteran guys,
- 21:13Speaker 6: but they are say, take Matt Chapman. He really took
- 21:17Speaker 6: to Drew Gilbert. You know, Drew Gilbert's a very sort
- 21:20Speaker 6: of raw rye, you know, collegiate type player, and he
- 21:25Speaker 6: showed that tons of personality, loads of enthusiasm, and Chapman
- 21:30Speaker 6: loved that. You know that as the team kind of
- 21:35Speaker 6: faltered a little bit down the stretch, I think some
- 21:37Speaker 6: of that stuff maybe got put aside. Drew Gilbert, to
- 21:42Speaker 6: his credit, didn't haul out the raw ras stuff when
- 21:45Speaker 6: the team was playing poorly. But maybe that is something
- 21:49Speaker 6: that a team that has struggled to kind of be
- 21:51Speaker 6: consistent for a few years could use as a little
- 21:53Speaker 6: more energy, some more enthusiasm. I don't know if that.
- 21:58Speaker 6: I've never met Tony Vittello. I walked past him once
- 22:02Speaker 6: when the Giants played the Rockies this year. I really
- 22:04Speaker 6: should have stopped and introduced myself. Guys kind of whipped
- 22:06Speaker 6: all that one. But yeah, he's he's got a big personality.
- 22:12Speaker 6: You always wonder sometimes how that plays in a big
- 22:15Speaker 6: league clubhouse, especially with somebody that has no pro experience
- 22:19Speaker 6: of any kind. If you've got a big, big, big
- 22:21Speaker 6: personality to go along with that, there's the potential that
- 22:25Speaker 6: it could rub some veterans the wrong way.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Sure, that was gonna be my question, how do we
- 22:30Speaker 4: think this is going to go? Because he's never had
- 22:32Speaker 4: to answer. When you're the head coach of a collegey
- 22:34Speaker 4: you have an ad and but if you're doing well,
- 22:36Speaker 4: they just kind of let you do your own thing.
- 22:38Speaker 4: They don't really have to answer to anybody. Well, here,
- 22:40Speaker 4: he's got owners, he's got buster, he's got GMS, he's
- 22:44Speaker 4: got players. A lot of times you have to answer
- 22:46Speaker 4: to how's he going to deal with not being like
- 22:49Speaker 4: the big man on campus? Because in college, you know,
- 22:52Speaker 4: college football coaches are the man. College basketball coaches, college
- 22:55Speaker 4: baseball coaches, they control their Oh you don't like this,
- 22:58Speaker 4: guess what, transfer, We'll find somebody else. So there's a
- 23:00Speaker 4: million people you can find. Big leagues don't work like that.
- 23:02Speaker 4: You have a select few people you can get. So
- 23:04Speaker 4: how's Tony going to adapt to being not the head
- 23:08Speaker 4: guy in charge?
- 23:10Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean there's all sorts of things. The so
- 23:13Speaker 6: much more media right that that's going to be a
- 23:16Speaker 6: huge difference too. I think he's very good with the media.
- 23:19Speaker 6: It certainly seems like fans so many more fans, and
- 23:24Speaker 6: the fans are going to be as skeptical, I think,
- 23:27Speaker 6: as we're going to hear from a lot of the media.
- 23:31Speaker 6: So he's going to have to deal with a lot.
- 23:33Speaker 6: He's going to have an enormous amount on his plate.
- 23:36Speaker 6: The thing I'm more curious about is who winds up
- 23:39Speaker 6: being the bench coach. Do you need somebody who's very
- 23:43Speaker 6: experienced in that spot? And if so, is that do
- 23:47Speaker 6: you sort of feel like, if you're Tony Vittello, is
- 23:49Speaker 6: there's somebody looking over my shoulder all the time. Do
- 23:52Speaker 6: I have to worry that if I, you know, we
- 23:54Speaker 6: go into a long losing streak, that suddenly I'm going
- 23:57Speaker 6: to get replaced by somebody who's got some former managing experience.
- 24:02Speaker 6: I you know, I would have had the same question
- 24:05Speaker 6: probably if it had been somebody like Nick Huntley, who
- 24:07Speaker 6: was the early front runner before he withdrew his name
- 24:10Speaker 6: for family reasons. And I think still might be potentially
- 24:13Speaker 6: somebody that the Padres are looking at. So there's so
- 24:18Speaker 6: many different aspects to this. It's absolutely fascinating. We're gonna
- 24:21Speaker 6: be able to write about this all off season, which
- 24:23Speaker 6: I guess is a good thing.
- 24:26Speaker 3: You answered that question too. I was gonna bring up
- 24:28Speaker 3: Nick Huntley, But how about the other coaching staff? Have
- 24:30Speaker 3: you heard of any wind about what might be? Is
- 24:33Speaker 3: there going to be a whole new revamp of everybody
- 24:35Speaker 3: pretty much, or is there going to be a couple
- 24:37Speaker 3: of guys that you still know about? Have you heard anything?
- 24:40Speaker 6: Well, it's going to be interesting, because the Giant said
- 24:43Speaker 6: when they let go Bob Melvin and Matt Williams and
- 24:47Speaker 6: Ryan Christensen both immediately told me that they are leaving
- 24:50Speaker 6: with him. But otherwise, the Giant said that they will
- 24:54Speaker 6: recommend the rest of the coaching staff to whoever the
- 24:58Speaker 6: new manager is. Now. I would assume that Tony Vitello has,
- 25:01Speaker 6: you know, at least somebody or a couple of guys
- 25:04Speaker 6: that he would like to bring in, but they are
- 25:07Speaker 6: going to need some experience. I thought JP Martinez and
- 25:10Speaker 6: Garvin Alston, the pitching coach and the assistant pitching coach,
- 25:15Speaker 6: were fantastic last year. It's really tough to argue with
- 25:18Speaker 6: what the job the Giants pitchers did overall. I really
- 25:23Speaker 6: hope they're back. I think the Giants hitting coaches did
- 25:25Speaker 6: a good job, you know, with you know a lot
- 25:28Speaker 6: of things kind of going against them at times. So
- 25:33Speaker 6: I don't know, I don't know how that's going to
- 25:35Speaker 6: go at all, But to me, it's that bench coach
- 25:38Speaker 6: spot that's going to be really in the you know,
- 25:41Speaker 6: they're going to need some experience. There's just not a
- 25:43Speaker 6: ton of older coaches there.
- 25:47Speaker 4: So there's enough about the new manager. Let's let's talk
- 25:49Speaker 4: about the team this year, and let's talk Buster. How
- 25:52Speaker 4: would you rate Buster's first year on the job, including
- 25:56Speaker 4: if this does go down, which everyone is kind of
- 25:58Speaker 4: is expecting it to happen, how would you rate his
- 26:00Speaker 4: first year on the job as president of baseball as well?
- 26:06Speaker 6: You know, it's I really would probably give him a
- 26:09Speaker 6: solid A because of the Dever's trade and doing that
- 26:13Speaker 6: so early and out of nowhere and giving up not
- 26:16Speaker 6: a ton to get such a great player. The one
- 26:21Speaker 6: stumble that was understandable at the time was trading to
- 26:25Speaker 6: experienced relievers just before the team got hot, which obviously
- 26:30Speaker 6: you don't have a crystal ball, you don't know. They
- 26:32Speaker 6: got very good value in return for those relievers and
- 26:36Speaker 6: Tyler Rodgers and Community Duval, but they then went on
- 26:40Speaker 6: a tear. But the bullpen had so little, you know,
- 26:46Speaker 6: very young guys pitching in different spots that really hurt
- 26:51Speaker 6: them down the stretch. I think that they were a
- 26:53Speaker 6: much better team than they were that final month of
- 26:56Speaker 6: the season, but the bullpen really struggled, so I still
- 27:01Speaker 6: give him an a. I really I think all the
- 27:03Speaker 6: moves he made at the time were very good, and
- 27:06Speaker 6: the offseason moves too were very good. So he's doing well.
- 27:10Speaker 6: I mean, this is probably his biggest test to date.
- 27:14Speaker 6: So you know, let's get back in another year. Let's
- 27:18Speaker 6: reconfer on a grade for Buster.
- 27:22Speaker 4: That's really good.
- 27:23Speaker 3: That's really good. He's a stud. I'm talking about free
- 27:25Speaker 3: agents now, where they resign any guys and do you
- 27:28Speaker 3: see them getting after it a top free agents in
- 27:30Speaker 3: the market, because they always seem to be involved, you
- 27:33Speaker 3: know what I mean, And they always seem to get
- 27:35Speaker 3: one or two guys, but it's always that man, why
- 27:37Speaker 3: couldn't we get this person? Do you see this team
- 27:40Speaker 3: in the same direction going in a free agency or
- 27:42Speaker 3: do you see this team kind of you know, maybe
- 27:43Speaker 3: holding back a little bit.
- 27:45Speaker 6: Well, I think they're really going to want to know
- 27:47Speaker 6: what happens with a lot of guys who either have
- 27:49Speaker 6: team options or potentially are tied to qualifying offers. Kyle Tucker,
- 27:54Speaker 6: I think is a guy who would they would definitely
- 27:56Speaker 6: have interest in if he is somebody who is available
- 28:01Speaker 6: on the market and they need another back, they absolutely
- 28:06Speaker 6: need another bat, but almost all of those guys either
- 28:09Speaker 6: have team options, player options, or qualifying offer potential, so
- 28:15Speaker 6: we shall see. They'd very much like to bring back
- 28:18Speaker 6: Justin Verlander. I think the ball is in Verlander's court
- 28:21Speaker 6: on that one. He's pitching it a great ballpark. I mean,
- 28:24Speaker 6: we know why he went there, right, you know, he's
- 28:26Speaker 6: trying to get to three hundred wins. Great ballpark, good defense,
- 28:31Speaker 6: and he pitched really well, particularly in the second half,
- 28:34Speaker 6: really well, so he's going to get offers. But the
- 28:38Speaker 6: record was absolutely not what he wanted. So I don't
- 28:42Speaker 6: know quite how he looks at that. Does the manager
- 28:46Speaker 6: decision or what they do with pitching coach, does that
- 28:49Speaker 6: potentially affect it. I don't know. If he leaves, they
- 28:51Speaker 6: also need a veteran starter. There are going to be
- 28:55Speaker 6: a lot on the market. I certainly know when Bob
- 28:58Speaker 6: Melvin was still the manager, you would looked at, say
- 29:00Speaker 6: Sonny Gray, who absolutely has the best relationship with with
- 29:05Speaker 6: Bob Melvin and would have loved to come there. He's
- 29:07Speaker 6: got to you know, obviously he can decline trades, but
- 29:12Speaker 6: I think you know, a year in a good ballpark
- 29:14Speaker 6: for pictures with you know, Matt Chapman played behind him.
- 29:18Speaker 6: He knows what that's like. That's fantastic for pretty much
- 29:20Speaker 6: any picture. I think he's somebody that could make a
- 29:23Speaker 6: trade for if the asking price isn't too high. So
- 29:27Speaker 6: they've got a lot of options there. But they definitely
- 29:29Speaker 6: will need a veteran picture of some sort, and they
- 29:32Speaker 6: need a bat another bat somehow.
- 29:35Speaker 1: And the thing that I think Giants fan should be
- 29:37Speaker 1: excited about is the fact that they'll get that done
- 29:39Speaker 1: because Posey in year one already has talked his bosses
- 29:43Speaker 1: into doing a lot of things that it was not
- 29:45Speaker 1: as easy to do in the past.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Right, he's clearly got cachet.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Even in this manager situation, Susan Tony Vattello is not
- 29:52Speaker 1: coming over for a million bucks a year, right, He's
- 29:54Speaker 1: going to be a more expensive manager. Buster's spending on
- 29:58Speaker 1: Dever's and a damis and that'll continue. So I think
- 30:00Speaker 1: Giants fan should be excited about that part. Clearly he's
- 30:03Speaker 1: got some say. But appreciate the time. We're gonna obviously
- 30:08Speaker 1: talk more about this. We'll wait till it's official, but
- 30:11Speaker 1: thanks for hopping on with us, and appreciate the time.
- 30:13Speaker 6: As always, fantastic Thanks US
