- 0:50Speaker 2: So Drew Kendall, I thought looked really damn good and
- 0:54Speaker 2: yeah right, And to me, it's like I've gotten out
- 0:57Speaker 2: to this point where we're like Brett Toad was in there.
- 0:59Speaker 2: It's like I almost feel like the organization, for some
- 1:01Speaker 2: bizarre reason, is scared to play guys that are rookies
- 1:04Speaker 2: that weren't picked in the first or second round. Because
- 1:07Speaker 2: I'm looking at Kendall and I'm like, this guy might
- 1:09Speaker 2: be a gem here, and i just want to get
- 1:10Speaker 2: your thoughts overall on how he played this to the
- 1:12Speaker 2: Naked Eye. It was really good.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Well, there's two guys that when I watched m Key,
- 1:16Speaker 3: I watched in detail and that was Kendall and Cameron Williams,
- 1:19Speaker 3: and I thought Kendall played really well. Kendall is your classic,
- 1:25Speaker 3: probably because his dad was a center or a guard,
- 1:27Speaker 3: I forget, but his dad was offensively both. Yeah, Kendall's
- 1:32Speaker 3: one of those guys to me, even when I watched
- 1:34Speaker 3: him at BC, because I did him coming out frank
- 1:36Speaker 3: that I just thought knew how to play the position.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Like he's not physically imposing, you know, he's not one
- 1:41Speaker 3: of those guys, but he knows leverage, he knows angles,
- 1:44Speaker 3: he knows how to play the position. He knows how
- 1:47Speaker 3: to get his body in the right spot. And I
- 1:49Speaker 3: thought that showed up, you know, in the game on Sunday.
- 1:53Speaker 3: And you know, I'm not going to sit here and
- 1:55Speaker 3: say he's the starting center. And I don't know the
- 1:56Speaker 3: answer to that question. You know, no one, No one
- 1:58Speaker 3: does for sure, But I watching his Boston college tape,
- 2:03Speaker 3: I felt he could develop into a starting center in
- 2:05Speaker 3: the NFL and be a good one.
- 2:06Speaker 4: So I'm looking at Perdy and I'm thinking, just like golf,
- 2:15Speaker 4: you got to get him off of his spot and
- 2:18Speaker 4: his timing.
- 2:19Speaker 3: So what have you seen.
- 2:21Speaker 4: From Purdy this year that impressed you or have been
- 2:26Speaker 4: so much impressed you.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Well, Perty is the same as he always is. It's
- 2:31Speaker 3: not any different this year than at any previous year.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Purty is part of it. It's a perfect marriage between
- 2:39Speaker 3: scheme and quarterback because Purty's this gets into the whole
- 2:44Speaker 3: discussion of quarterback traits out and you know we've touched
- 2:47Speaker 3: upon this, and people who may listen to me in
- 2:49Speaker 3: other places know that I'm getting a little tired of
- 2:53Speaker 3: all this belief about quarterbacks. If they throw it hard
- 2:55Speaker 3: and run fast, that means they have great quarterback traits.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Purdy is understands intuitively how to play the quarterback position.
- 3:04Speaker 3: But even though he's mobile, he's not a playmaker in
- 3:07Speaker 3: a strict sense. You know, he's not Josh Allen, he's
- 3:10Speaker 3: not Patrick Mahomes, he's not that guy. He's not Joe Burrow,
- 3:14Speaker 3: but he's closer to that in terms of how he
- 3:17Speaker 3: plays the position. So what you have is a really
- 3:21Speaker 3: well schemed offense that's based on what we call pure progression.
- 3:25Speaker 3: But there's two things that you didn't know about Purty
- 3:28Speaker 3: coming out of college. Because you don't see that in
- 3:30Speaker 3: college the way it's necessary in the NFL because the
- 3:33Speaker 3: college game is totally different. You didn't see that he
- 3:36Speaker 3: had a very innate feel for timing and anticipation. And
- 3:40Speaker 3: you didn't see that he had a really innate feel
- 3:43Speaker 3: for coverage rotation. So those are two things that he
- 3:47Speaker 3: just from the moment he started his rookie year against Miami.
- 3:51Speaker 3: When he came in that game, you could see right
- 3:53Speaker 3: away that he just knew that it just was an eight.
- 3:57Speaker 3: It's in his DNA. So that's the kind of quarterback
- 4:00Speaker 3: he is. But he needs the scheme to present everything
- 4:03Speaker 3: cleanly for him because that's the nature of pure progression.
- 4:07Speaker 3: The nature of pure progression. It's true really in any
- 4:09Speaker 3: kind of outfense, but you really want the primary read
- 4:13Speaker 3: to be the throw because that allows you to stay
- 4:16Speaker 3: within the timing of the drop, set and delivery. Now,
- 4:19Speaker 3: he certainly can go to secondary receivers, but it's just
- 4:23Speaker 3: a perfect marriage of scheme and higher level quarterback traits.
- 4:29Speaker 3: So he's no different now, you know, than he was
- 4:32Speaker 3: last year or three weeks ago or three months ago.
- 4:35Speaker 4: This is who he is, and what Seattle did to
- 4:39Speaker 4: him last week is throw him off that schedule to
- 4:43Speaker 4: some degree.
- 4:43Speaker 3: But you have to understand the Niners don't have any
- 4:45Speaker 3: talented wide receiver, so you know, at some point you
- 4:49Speaker 3: got to win one on one. It's the same problem
- 4:51Speaker 3: the Bills have. It's why the Bills are going to
- 4:53Speaker 3: lose in the first round, and everybody's gonna blame Josh Allen.
- 4:55Speaker 3: At some point you need I loved it. It's the same,
- 5:00Speaker 3: and you know you need guys to win one on
- 5:03Speaker 3: one somewhere along the line because teams will play man
- 5:06Speaker 3: coverage and you need guys that can win on the outside.
- 5:10Speaker 3: They don't have any of those guys. Ricky Pierce all
- 5:13Speaker 3: is the best at it, and he's a second year
- 5:15Speaker 3: player who's been unfortunately hurt a lot. But John Jennings
- 5:18Speaker 3: is a really nice, probably like a two A kind
- 5:21Speaker 3: of guy, super tough guy, super competitive. You know once
- 5:25Speaker 3: in a while, can win one on one, but not
- 5:28Speaker 3: really you know outside the numbers. You know, obviously kiddo can,
- 5:32Speaker 3: but you know you need a wide receiver who can
- 5:35Speaker 3: do that, and they don't have that guy.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Hey, guys, I thought I would ask you about the
- 5:42Speaker 5: tight end position. I didn't see if are are non
- 5:48Speaker 5: blocking tight end is going to be playing uh next week.
- 5:51Speaker 5: But I just saw like while I was watching the game.
- 5:54Speaker 5: You know, kal Kater got hurt. Obviously, you know the
- 5:57Speaker 5: guy get hurt, But it seemed like the blo the
- 6:02Speaker 5: blocking was better with grantson and lots and I didn't
- 6:07Speaker 5: know who was lined up. You know, they had some
- 6:09Speaker 5: guys that fall back and sometimes they had just had
- 6:10Speaker 5: a more like a tight up you have that line.
- 6:14Speaker 5: But man, they seemed like in the run game that
- 6:17Speaker 5: they were especially when they were coming across the formation,
- 6:21Speaker 5: they were putting some hits on guys. I'm just curious,
- 6:23Speaker 5: what did you think of the blocking and the run
- 6:25Speaker 5: game from those two.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Well, a Lot two is a good blocker. He was
- 6:30Speaker 3: a really good blocker at Alabama. He I kind of
- 6:33Speaker 3: liked a Lot two coming out of Alabama because I
- 6:34Speaker 3: thought he could be your classic kind of number two
- 6:37Speaker 3: tight end who is an adequate enough receiver, you know,
- 6:42Speaker 3: not a true vertical receiver, but an adequate enough receiver
- 6:45Speaker 3: and a solid blocker. Like in some ways, this guy
- 6:51Speaker 3: would be considered better because of where he was drafted,
- 6:53Speaker 3: although I thought he was overdrafted. But in some ways,
- 6:56Speaker 3: like Mike Meyer, who's with the Raiders, who I thought
- 6:59Speaker 3: was way over drafted. But that's just me. You know,
- 7:02Speaker 3: a guy who's like a quality short to short intermedia
- 7:06Speaker 3: receiver and a solid blocker.
- 7:08Speaker 5: Wait, does that mean next year we're gonna draft the
- 7:09Speaker 5: best tight end to come out in the next ten
- 7:11Speaker 5: years like they did with the Raiders, didn't they just.
- 7:17Speaker 3: You mean Bowers? Yeah, yeah, yeah, but anyway, different GM
- 7:22Speaker 3: by the way, two different gms. Yeah yeah. So the
- 7:25Speaker 3: question with someone like Calcatara is is what kind of
- 7:30Speaker 3: blocks Chris? You're going to ask him to make? What
- 7:34Speaker 3: he can't do? And they know this, believe me, you
- 7:36Speaker 3: know they know this. If I know what, they know it.
- 7:39Speaker 3: He's not a guy you're going to ask to block
- 7:41Speaker 3: one on one against defensive ends, unless it's an angle
- 7:46Speaker 3: block or a seal block or a pin block. But
- 7:48Speaker 3: you're not gonna ask him to do a base or
- 7:51Speaker 3: a drive block head up on a tight end. He's
- 7:53Speaker 3: he's not capable of that. But depending on the kind
- 7:56Speaker 3: of run, like I'll give you. You know a great example,
- 8:00Speaker 3: Barkley had a twenty eight yard run against the Giants
- 8:03Speaker 3: maybe Week eight or nine, whatever week that was, and
- 8:05Speaker 3: it was what's called a pin pole scheme, and he
- 8:08Speaker 3: had an angle block on the defensive end. He can
- 8:10Speaker 3: do that, you know, it all depends on what kind
- 8:12Speaker 3: of block you want to ask a guy to execute.
- 8:16Speaker 3: So he can do those kinds of things, but you're
- 8:18Speaker 3: not gonna ask him to drive block or base block,
- 8:21Speaker 3: you know, a two hundred and seventy pound defensive end,
- 8:24Speaker 3: because then you're just asking for failure.
