- 0:00There's a really cool overlook near my house that I lead night
- 0:05hiking groups on, and one of my favorite is a little technical,
- 0:13especially if you haven't hiked or not an avid hiker, and
- 0:18definitely at night. One very particular hike. It was full
- 0:23moon, and a group of maybe five of us, six of us, decided to
- 0:30hike to this overlook. A few had been on that trail before, but
- 0:35never at night. And there was a few who had never hiked at all.
- 0:41So we start hiking and we go up without our headlamps. We
- 0:46thought it would be cool, you know, fuck around, find out. And
- 0:50so, but it was a full moon, and so we start hiking and we're all
- 0:57like chilling out and enjoying our hike, and we get up past the
- 1:03technical part, and we're kind of just trailing through the
- 1:07woods. And the one who had never hiked before her, who wanted to
- 1:12turn back and go home, she told me to not speak to her for three
- 1:19to five business weeks for doing this to her. Although, in my
- 1:24defense, I did warn her, and she did not want to believe me. She
- 1:29swore she would be okay because she wasn't out of shape per se.
- 1:35We kept going anyways because it was night, and we don't let
- 1:38anyone hide by themselves, and we weren't turning around, so we
- 1:42continue going, and we finally make it up to the overlook. And
- 1:49they were all so happy that we didn't turn around because that
- 1:54view at nighttime is spectacular. Even though that's
- 1:58one of the more technical trails around me, and there's some
- 2:02easier ones with pretty overlooks. This one is
- 2:06definitely worth the work you put in to get to it at
- 2:09nighttime. And they had only planned on staying up there for
- 2:14an hour, and we ended up staying up there for four hours. It was
- 2:20just magical. The energy, the view, the full moon, the
- 2:24conversation, the people. It was just. It was better than
- 2:28anything else they had experienced, and that's what
- 2:32we're talking about today. Hey, hey, I'm Ginger, and welcome
- 2:36back to Wild Soul Alchemy. Last episode we talked about what if
- 2:41it actually fucking worked, and only one way to find out. Today
- 2:46is for when you already know what you want, but it's really
- 2:51huge, and you're just frozen at the bottom, not taking any
- 2:55action. I mentioned last episode how this podcast had been a
- 3:01thought for three years. This was my big mountain. I was
- 3:07getting solid on the messaging, what this is about, and what
- 3:10transformation I wanted to offer. And there's a lot. My
- 3:14mountain, the peak of the mountain for me, looks like a
- 3:18YouTube channel. It looks like a TikTok channel. There are so
- 3:23many the things that retreats all of the things. And if I sat
- 3:28here and waited until the peak was right in front of me, I'm
- 3:33never. I would have never started this. You wouldn't be on
- 3:37episode three of this show. So I just started taking and putting
- 3:43one foot in front of the other. I am currently sitting at my
- 3:47kitchen table with a microphone and an audio program that's on
- 3:52my laptop. And let me say this is a lot of the things I am
- 3:57running are free because I don't have all the money either.
- 4:00That's another part of my mountain. And then when I'm done
- 4:03recording this, I Google step by step on what all I need to do to
- 4:09get it from an audio file on my computer that's raw with all of
- 4:15the pauses and the mess ups to on whatever podcast streaming
- 4:21app you're using right now, and then in between recording these
- 4:26episodes, I am down working on the room that I'm going to use
- 4:31as my recording studio. So I am still hiking my mountain. I
- 4:38don't have to see the top. Currently, I'm standing at the
- 4:40bottom, and when I look up, like I don't even see the peak, the
- 4:45trees, the trail. It's all just out of sight. But that doesn't
- 4:50mean that it's not there. And you can't climb the mountain all
- 4:56at once. You're at the bottom and up a. Above those clouds is
- 5:01the peak to the mountain, and you can't just like take one
- 5:04step. I'm almost six foot. I got some pretty long legs.
- 5:07I don't have to take as many steps, but like I can't get to
- 5:12the top in just one step. So why do we try in one step everything
- 5:16else? We need to put one foot in front of the other. That's the
- 5:20whole secret. That's it. You don't need to see the top. You
- 5:24don't need to know every switchback. Just the next step.
- 5:28So when I'm taking people on the trails, leading these groups,
- 5:33and they're wanting to quit, I just remind them that we just
- 5:36have to keep taking one step in front of the other. And it's the
- 5:39same as turning around. If you stop and turn around, you still
- 5:43have to put one foot in front of the other. So instead of turning
- 5:47back and heading back to the same spot you were in life, you
- 5:52take that same amount of energy and put it going forward and
- 5:56reach what you want to reach. One day you'll turn around and
- 6:00you won't believe how far you've come, and a lot of times it's
- 6:04only a couple months. Like you don't have to wait for years
- 6:07when you get around those first couple switchbacks, and you turn
- 6:10around and you're like, "Oh shit! I remember I was right at
- 6:13the trailhead. It just seemed like one step ago." And look at
- 6:16how far I've come already. And then you get a mile in, and then
- 6:19you're two miles and three miles, and before you know it,
- 6:24you are all the way at your peak. Remember that group. We
- 6:28only planned on staying for one hour, and we ended up staying
- 6:32for four hours up there. So just remind yourself that the
- 6:37overlook is going to be beautiful, and even tell
- 6:41yourself it's probably going to be better than what I imagine,
- 6:44and use that to keep going. And you don't need every tool or
- 6:50every answer before you go. I remember my first night hike,
- 6:55and it was only the second hike of my whole life. I had been on
- 6:59this trail one other time during the day and went in thinking,
- 7:05oh, I've done this once. It'll be awesome. I want to see this
- 7:08at night now. I have an infinity with the or a love for
- 7:13nightlife, like life at night. And I went in with only my
- 7:18phone. I had flip flops on. I remember the trail and was like,
- 7:23yeah, like nothing's gonna cut my feet. I am a barefoot person,
- 7:26so just having flip flops on was a huge improvement. And I ended
- 7:32up because the flashlight on my phone. This was like 10 years
- 7:35ago. It wasn't very bright, so I had to keep it like right in
- 7:39front of my feet. This was not a full moon, and I ended up
- 7:43getting lost. I actually like found my way off the trail,
- 7:48which I was like, it's it's really mark it's marked well.
- 7:51Like as long as I stay on the trail, I can't get lost. And I
- 7:56had made a couple like there were a couple times that I like
- 7:59stopped and spun around and was like, "Is this really the trail,
- 8:03or did the trail like go somewhere else?" So it kind of
- 8:06looked like it had been walked before, and it kind of looked
- 8:09like it was a rocky path. But then there was a lot of grass,
- 8:14and it just kept getting worse and worse. To where like I was
- 8:17literally like, I stopped and I was like, "Wait a second! Like,
- 8:20how did I even like? Where is the freaking trail? And I spun
- 8:24around and spun around. I was like, "Fuck, I'm lost!" And
- 8:27thankfully, like the universe has always been on my side
- 8:31looking back. And I had service, so I opened up Google Maps, and
- 8:37it actually had it was the Appalachian Trail that I had
- 8:41wandered off of, and so that Balachan Trail was actually on
- 8:44Google Maps, and it shows me like way off into the cut. I was
- 8:50a mile off of the trail, like into the thicket, and so I just
- 8:56faced a little arrow to the trail, and I walked straight to
- 9:01it, and I did not care. Like I, there were some brambles, like
- 9:05thickets, thorns, rock, some little like rocky things. I had
- 9:10to climb up, and remember, I'm only in barefoot by this point.
- 9:14But I was so afraid that if I tried to find my way around
- 9:19these like difficult parts that I would actually get further and
- 9:23further. Like I started panicking. I'm like, oh shit,
- 9:26we've got to call on the National Guard to come save me.
- 9:29This is going to be embarrassing. I'm going to make
- 9:31it to the front page of the newspapers tomorrow because a
- 9:35helicopter had to come in and pull me out. And I was really
- 9:39nervous. I had a friend who had stayed the night, and she went
- 9:43to bed early. And so I was like, "Hey, keep an eye out for the
- 9:47kids. I'll be back before you have to get up and leave at 5
- 9:51a.m." And so I'm getting really nervous that I'm not going to
- 9:54make it back. I'm going to mess up my friend's day. My kids
- 9:57aren't going to see me when they wake up, which was very
- 9:59important. That I was always there when they woke up, and so
- 10:04all of these things, and I'm like, fuck it, I'm just heading
- 10:06straight to the trail. I need to get off this mountain, and I
- 10:10finally made it back to the trail because when you're in the
- 10:15moment, you just figure it the fuck out. I am always a fuck
- 10:18around, and I usually do find out. But one thing I've learned
- 10:22through this is I have always found like figured it out, and
- 10:27so now I don't even really make a plan. Plans are just make
- 10:32believe situations to me. Most plans that I've put a lot of
- 10:37energy and effort into went wrong, and they didn't go wrong
- 10:41in ways that I had like had all these backup plans for, and so
- 10:46plans are just a waste of time to me now. And the pattern of
- 10:51all of the times I've messed up before is I've always figured it
- 10:55out in the moment. So you don't have it to have it all figured
- 10:59out at the bottom. You just have to figure it out on the trail.
- 11:02If part of what's stopping you is I'm not really sure that this
- 11:07is what you want to do. Like I'm pretty fucking positive that the
- 11:11podcast is what I want, so I just keep taking step after step
- 11:15up this massive mountain. But if the reason that you're still
- 11:20hesitating is because maybe a podcast isn't like truly part of
- 11:27your purpose, and you're just oh I want to like see if this is it
- 11:30because there's only one way to find out. How about you just
- 11:34start smaller mountains? You don't have to go up the massive.
- 11:38So my so my mountain really isn't the podcast. My mountain
- 11:41is the YouTube channel, and so if I wasn't sure that that's
- 11:46what I wanted to do, I would just start on a little mountain
- 11:49and be like, "Okay, let's try podcasting." And if that's
- 11:51successful and a lot of people love hearing me, then then I can
- 11:57try out new mountains. Like a lot of hikers aren't as extreme
- 12:00as me, and they start out smaller, less technical paths. I
- 12:05love technical and figuring out as I go, so that's why I jump
- 12:09for the big mountains. And I know my purpose is to be a coach
- 12:12and a motivational speaker, so that's why I'm just tackling my
- 12:17massive mountain. So see how it feels. Build your legs on the
- 12:21smaller mountains, and then you can shoot for the bigger one.
- 12:25Every big climb starts with a smaller one, and always remember
- 12:30that your kids are off watching. They see you standing at the
- 12:34bottom of your mountain, and they're watching whether you're
- 12:37going to turn around or if you're going to start hiking.
- 12:40They need to learn what it is to do it. Anyways, like that's the
- 12:45biggest gift we can give them is a mom who keeps climbing no
- 12:49matter how scared we are. So go pick your mountain, whether it's
- 12:54the big thing, a little thing, and just forget what's at the
- 12:58top. What's the next step? Jot down step by step what you can
- 13:03see in just the next 20 feet. Make it small. It it might be
- 13:08super silly.
- 13:09Is like put one foot in front of the left, the other left, right,
- 13:13left, right. Write it in one sentence, and then take that
- 13:16step. Come tell me on Instagram at Wild Soul Alchemist what your
- 13:20mountain is and what your first step is. I'll be cheering you
- 13:24on, and would like to take this hike with you. The next episode
- 13:29is about how we were on the same train but different views. Stay
- 13:33curious, wild soul. Toodles.
