- 1:33Speaker 1: episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. The original air
- 1:36Speaker 1: date April the twenty fifth of nineteen fifty and the
- 1:40Speaker 1: title is The High Collared Cape.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Get This and Get It Straight. Crime is a sucker's road.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Those who travel it wind up in the gut of
- 1:49Speaker 2: the prison of the grave. This time a nervous break
- 1:51Speaker 2: down in a driving rain, A cape with a high
- 1:54Speaker 2: color and a tiny sliver of glass led me from
- 1:56Speaker 2: the ballet and a beautiful dancer to the edge of
- 1:59Speaker 2: a cliff. It happened like this.
- 2:03Speaker 3: From the pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of prime fiction,
- 2:06Speaker 3: comes his most famous.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Character in the Adventures of Philip Marlowe.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe, we bring
- 2:22Speaker 3: you tonight's exciting story the high colored cape.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Mm hmmm.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Nothing like a drink and a good book and a
- 2:56Speaker 2: rainy night and what a nice Oh no, all right,
- 3:03Speaker 2: don't spray in your finger.
- 3:06Speaker 6: I'm most sorry to intrude on you this time at night,
- 3:09Speaker 6: but I may have waited.
- 3:10Speaker 7: Too long already.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah, well, looks.
- 3:13Speaker 6: I felt something dreadful was going to happen to even know. No,
- 3:16Speaker 6: I'm sure that you must find him for me to prove.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Wait, who is Andrea bad Matter? Who are you?
- 3:22Speaker 6: I am Vivian Northway, Prima Ballerina Ballet.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Dumont Prima Ballerina.
- 3:26Speaker 6: I'm forres sorry of the company, My dear, dear old friend,
- 3:29Speaker 6: my teacher, the man who has been like a father
- 3:31Speaker 6: to me, That is android Andrei. That do we must
- 3:34Speaker 6: help him at once? Well, why don't you, mister molloy.
- 3:37Speaker 6: I fear for some time that Andrei was on the
- 3:40Speaker 6: brink of losing his mind. I can understand, fomented by
- 3:43Speaker 6: a thousand frustrations. He will never dance. He's been crippled,
- 3:47Speaker 6: but he's consumed with a passion for dancing and drives
- 3:50Speaker 6: himself to express his genius to the clumsy feet of it.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's very interesting, no Ida, But I don't see
- 3:54Speaker 2: why you came to midnight massode Way. What can I do?
- 3:57Speaker 6: Help me to find him? Yesterday so something else happened
- 4:01Speaker 6: to Andrea. I don't know what, but it upset him.
- 4:03Speaker 6: Then today at noon, when this awful rain started, he disappeared.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Oh God, Kevin, Yeah, what about it?
- 4:10Speaker 6: I'm be late for the performance. Here take this ticketing,
- 4:13Speaker 6: Please come to the theater, mister Marlowe.
- 4:15Speaker 5: I beg you.
- 4:16Speaker 6: I'll pay you anything you'll ask. Only promised me you'll.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Come well like please, okay, man, So I'll be there
- 4:23Speaker 2: as soon as I can. Ballerina swept out of my
- 4:33Speaker 2: apartment like a frightened whirlwind. As I got dressed all
- 4:36Speaker 2: over again for an evening in ballet, which I needed
- 4:38Speaker 2: like a cute appendicitis, I saw that the ticket she
- 4:41Speaker 2: left was number twenty seven J at the Great Arts Theater,
- 4:44Speaker 2: showing Ballet of the World, sponsored by one missus Imogene Wyatt.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Now I got to the lobby half soaked, near the
- 4:52Speaker 2: end of the second act when I see a shure
- 4:54Speaker 2: edge of the program at me and hush hushed me.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Inside the audience was a small quester about it die
- 5:00Speaker 2: hards down front, which left me in twenty seven J
- 5:03Speaker 2: feeling like Midway Island. My client, Vivian Oddway was the
- 5:07Speaker 2: whole show. When I saw the finale coming, I slipped
- 5:10Speaker 2: down a side aisle and into the wings, just in
- 5:13Speaker 2: time to catch a beef at the stage door between
- 5:15Speaker 2: a long wolf faced intruder and a pudgy domain.
- 5:19Speaker 7: Yes, Kellie after, but even if you was you wouldn't
- 5:22Speaker 7: get in.
- 5:22Speaker 4: She left strict daughters, don't finish.
- 5:25Speaker 7: Now get out and stay out.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Hey, But let me tell you something.
- 5:28Speaker 8: I brought my back getting publicy platform and a widow
- 5:31Speaker 8: and to sappen and the gene whire is going to
- 5:33Speaker 8: be sorry.
- 5:33Speaker 5: She fired me. I'm gonna see it for personal.
- 5:35Speaker 7: Get out of the takelly.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Nuts toward his whole troop of stuck up bressols.
- 5:48Speaker 6: Mister Morrow, Yeah, coming this tight to my sea.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Tell me have you heard from Andre la Duvin? No?
- 5:53Speaker 6: Nothing, but I did remember something that that nail Andre
- 5:57Speaker 6: I once mentioned that he had a friend here in
- 5:59Speaker 6: Los Angeles, in mister Baker, who will live to take
- 6:02Speaker 6: Windthrop Arms, the Winterrop Hotel, the Winterrops. Something come in,
- 6:07Speaker 6: mister Martin, Thank you Andre. Maybe there I'm grasping its straws,
- 6:11Speaker 6: I know, but if if his mind is gone and
- 6:14Speaker 6: he's lost, I'm so afraid for him.
- 6:18Speaker 2: All I take it easy, honey, take it easy.
- 6:22Speaker 6: And oh no, sure nothing in mister Marlowe. He was
- 6:25Speaker 6: going to find him forrest. He's a private detective.
- 6:28Speaker 5: I see wonderful.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I am George Medlin, No Vivian.
- 6:31Speaker 7: I'll be at the hotel. If I can help, please
- 6:33Speaker 7: do call on me.
- 6:34Speaker 9: And oh, my dear, you'll shine as beautifully tonight as
- 6:37Speaker 9: the full moon.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Simply we mere stars were hardly visible beside you.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Best man with a he's very sweet. What hotel did
- 6:48Speaker 2: he mean?
- 6:49Speaker 6: The Wheelshore gardens most of the ballystat How about you
- 6:53Speaker 6: say I have a house studio and look at Mountain
- 6:56Speaker 6: eight fifty. No, no, I'm going to wait here in
- 7:00Speaker 6: the theater. If Andre should remember him come back, I'd
- 7:05Speaker 6: want to be here. He's a very sick man.
- 7:13Speaker 2: After I left the theater, I quick checking a phone
- 7:15Speaker 2: book showed a winter Farm's apartment hotel on Havenhurst Drive.
- 7:19Speaker 2: It's just below Fountain Avenue. When I got there, I
- 7:22Speaker 2: found the name Baker stuck over the mailbox to Apartment one.
- 7:24Speaker 2: A went inside and out to the door. Yes, Andre,
- 7:39Speaker 2: La do what do you want? Oh? You're friends at
- 7:43Speaker 2: the theater worried about you?
- 7:44Speaker 5: My friends. I have no friends.
- 7:47Speaker 2: George Melacoff's worried about you.
- 7:49Speaker 5: George Meddicoff, my friends.
- 7:53Speaker 2: So it's Vivian, ddly, Vivian, that dear child.
- 7:58Speaker 5: What's will it become of?
- 7:59Speaker 4: No?
- 8:00Speaker 2: What do you mean? What's happened? Who are you? My
- 8:05Speaker 2: swordways sent me to find you. She's waiting for you
- 8:08Speaker 2: at the theater, waiting the theater.
- 8:11Speaker 5: Why Ballet's finished?
- 8:13Speaker 2: What's that? This is?
- 8:14Speaker 5: Himo gen Wyat withdraws her support completely. There is no
- 8:18Speaker 5: more ballet. You moaned and penniless, and all our work
- 8:23Speaker 5: has been for nothing. I try to reason with heaven.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Oh it was hit it.
- 8:31Speaker 8: Afterward I drove here in the dark street, the rain slashing,
- 8:37Speaker 8: clawing at me.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Way, Andrea, where's your friend, mister Baker? This place is
- 8:43Speaker 2: packed in marthfall Ah.
- 8:45Speaker 5: He is in Europe. It is all right that I
- 8:47Speaker 5: am here.
- 8:47Speaker 2: He sent me.
- 8:48Speaker 8: The key is long ago, said I could use his
- 8:50Speaker 8: apartment in this car. I came here to be alone,
- 8:54Speaker 8: to sink my shad. Andrea, what time was it when
- 8:58Speaker 8: you left missus White yesterday? I can't remember, only that
- 9:03Speaker 8: it was dark, very dark, and it was such a
- 9:06Speaker 8: difficult drive. Yeah, tomorrow she will notify her lawyer to
- 9:10Speaker 8: alter the papers.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Oh that that.
- 9:12Speaker 5: I wish you were dead, you hear me, I wish that.
- 9:16Speaker 5: Imogine Wyatt? What did?
- 9:19Speaker 2: What was best? Way you were?
- 9:25Speaker 3: What is it?
- 9:26Speaker 5: Do you see anything?
- 9:28Speaker 2: Oh? Now, look, Andrea, bout your headache. Wouldn't you like
- 9:35Speaker 2: to see a doctor?
- 9:36Speaker 5: Doctor?
- 9:37Speaker 2: No?
- 9:37Speaker 5: No, I'll be all right. I am I to understand.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Yes, sure, do me a favor for your own say
- 9:43Speaker 2: stay here tonight. Inside. I want to check a couple
- 9:46Speaker 2: of things and then I'll be back, Yes, I'll stay.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Where else would I go? Now? I left. I was
- 10:02Speaker 2: convinced that if the belllet impresario hadn't already slipped his trolley,
- 10:05Speaker 2: another slight bump would do it. But two things bother me.
- 10:09Speaker 2: So first I walked around to the window again, but
- 10:12Speaker 2: the neat trace of an eavesdropper and washed away by
- 10:14Speaker 2: the rain. Adam number two was the strong imprint to
- 10:18Speaker 2: drive home in the rain. It made and Andrea's troubled mind.
- 10:21Speaker 2: I wanted to know why the garage was under the
- 10:24Speaker 2: building on the far side, though was unlocked, and a
- 10:27Speaker 2: small light burned in the back. I finally found a
- 10:30Speaker 2: car asleep close to the ground Hudson registered to Allen
- 10:33Speaker 2: Baker and found it for the first grim discrepancy. The
- 10:37Speaker 2: left headlight and fender was still streaked with rain marks,
- 10:40Speaker 2: but the right had been white clean. When I reached
- 10:43Speaker 2: in and switched on the lights that sensed it, the
- 10:45Speaker 2: glass and the right headlight had been replaced. It was
- 10:49Speaker 2: brand new. Hey Dan, Hi, are you up to just
- 10:54Speaker 2: testing my friend's car? I may borrow it you the attendant.
- 11:00Speaker 10: Youn't here last night thinking around with this your car?
- 11:03Speaker 11: No?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Maybe it was mister Lado. He had it out last night.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Oh it wasn't It was somebody else.
- 11:09Speaker 12: I heard her.
- 11:10Speaker 7: No, I see you when I come out of my
- 11:11Speaker 7: back room.
- 11:12Speaker 5: There the sky big.
- 11:14Speaker 10: He took off like a scared turkey, had a big
- 11:16Speaker 10: black capan with a high collar flapping in the wind.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Better watch it, old time that stops getting your eyesight.
- 11:22Speaker 7: Looked like a cape to me.
- 11:25Speaker 10: Well, I looked around, I didn't see her. I'm done,
- 11:28Speaker 10: so I went back to my room. What time was
- 11:31Speaker 10: all this, Oh way past midnight, maybe one or two o'clock.
- 11:35Speaker 10: Couldn't pay much attention, by the way, was careful and nip.
- 11:41Speaker 2: No thanks, I'd like to use the phone. You got one?
- 11:44Speaker 5: Oh sure, sure, you're bed in the corner. I'll show you.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I'll find it. The call is personal to your mind.
- 11:54Speaker 10: I shall say, not herself, sunny hand, the old to
- 11:58Speaker 10: even be curious.
- 12:04Speaker 2: My first call was to a death sergeant on the
- 12:06Speaker 2: Police Traffic Bureau, when I identified myself and asked about
- 12:09Speaker 2: a hip and run accident, possibly on Fountain sometime before
- 12:12Speaker 2: midnight yesterday. It was a pause while he checked the record,
- 12:16Speaker 2: and then on.
- 12:17Speaker 12: The button mister Marlow. We identified him by his blue
- 12:20Speaker 12: shield medical car. One Lyle kretch Hour apparently stepped out
- 12:24Speaker 12: from between parked cars on Fountain Avenue between Orange Drive
- 12:28Speaker 12: and Roxbury was struck by an unidentified vehicle at about
- 12:31Speaker 12: eleven ten last night. Conditions serious, Now what.
- 12:35Speaker 7: Do you know about this? Mister Marlow?
- 12:36Speaker 2: I get in touch with the latest sergeant. Thanks stepped
- 12:41Speaker 2: out from between parts. It's Philip Marlow. I want to
- 12:51Speaker 2: talk to Vivian old Way.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Oh hang on.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Here, okay.
- 12:58Speaker 6: You found.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah for the present, but listen, Vivian, I gotta talk
- 13:01Speaker 2: to Imogene Wyatt. Where does she live?
- 13:03Speaker 7: Missus?
- 13:04Speaker 6: W Yeah, Beverly here, twenty one coming with her?
- 13:09Speaker 2: Twenty one can meet me there right away. Well, yeah,
- 13:11Speaker 2: I may have a couple of rough answers for you.
- 13:12Speaker 11: Baby.
- 13:13Speaker 4: I'm still in car.
- 13:14Speaker 2: That doesn't matter, all.
- 13:16Speaker 6: Right, I put something on over it. I'll be just
- 13:18Speaker 6: as soon as I can.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Between Smith Streets and Visibility zero. It was a solid
- 13:27Speaker 2: half hour drive from the Winter Bombs out of the
- 13:29Speaker 2: swank Cameo Terrace. When I pulled up at number twenty one,
- 13:32Speaker 2: I wondered what the wealthy widow had spent her money on.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Ours was so small it must have been shingled with
- 13:37Speaker 2: twenty dollars bills to meet the zoning restrictions. I just
- 13:40Speaker 2: started up the soggy gravel path toward the door when
- 13:42Speaker 2: it came. Because I started to run for the house
- 13:45Speaker 2: of Green Convertible, I hadn't noticed before Raw Delight suddenly
- 13:47Speaker 2: and disappeared down the side street, and I didn't have
- 13:50Speaker 2: time to worry about it. Inside I found this is
- 13:55Speaker 2: white on a dannial floor, cutting a losing battle with
- 13:58Speaker 2: the distance to the telephone.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Accident.
- 14:02Speaker 7: That's nice.
- 14:06Speaker 5: I was going to ruin.
- 14:09Speaker 2: No, she was dead. I looked through the rest of
- 14:21Speaker 2: the small and now silent house and Harry I found
- 14:25Speaker 2: nothing more constructive than the rear door wide open. I
- 14:29Speaker 2: got back to the living room just in time to
- 14:30Speaker 2: see my client, Vivian odd Way, bizarre and a short,
- 14:33Speaker 2: froffy ballet skirt and long white hose standing in the
- 14:36Speaker 2: front door.
- 14:38Speaker 6: Something's wrong, isn't it?
- 14:42Speaker 2: It's one way to put it. How'd you get here?
- 14:45Speaker 2: Vivian in the car? What do you know that drives
- 14:48Speaker 2: are Green convertible?
- 14:51Speaker 6: Sculley Haskill publicity man.
- 14:53Speaker 2: But why the guy I saw on a beef at
- 14:55Speaker 2: the theater tonight what's happened? Geene Wyatt was just shot
- 14:59Speaker 2: to dead? And that puts two items of business up
- 15:01Speaker 2: on Dick. First, a check call Andre la dou Andre
- 15:05Speaker 2: Andre off chance that he can drive faster than I can.
- 15:07Speaker 2: After that, a personal call on mister Haskell. You can
- 15:10Speaker 2: fill that one in yourself.
- 15:11Speaker 6: Malo Andre couldn't have. He couldn't.
- 15:13Speaker 2: We'll see. Hang on tight, baby, Let's get it over with.
- 15:28Speaker 4: In just a moment.
- 15:29Speaker 3: The second act of Philip Marlowe. But first, the great
- 15:32Speaker 3: international comedian and Beatrice Lily will be Ben Crosby's guest
- 15:35Speaker 3: on CBS this Wednesday Night. The CBS Bing Crosby Show
- 15:39Speaker 3: always guarantees enjoyment, so be listening when be Lily joins
- 15:43Speaker 3: Bing on most of these same CBS stations this Wednesday night,
- 15:48Speaker 3: and now with our star Gerald Moore, the second act
- 15:51Speaker 3: of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story, The High Colored keep.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Made a cock eyed picture, a beautiful ballerina miles away
- 16:07Speaker 2: from the stage, yet in full color drench costume and
- 16:09Speaker 2: gaping through tears, street grease paints sudden death. It's a
- 16:14Speaker 2: good time for me to start checking out. Andrea Lead
- 16:17Speaker 2: do the highest strong anversario was first. He was still
- 16:21Speaker 2: at the apartment. I could cross him off as having
- 16:22Speaker 2: done it personally.
- 16:28Speaker 12: Hello, Hello, who did you want?
- 16:32Speaker 2: Sorry? Wrong number?
- 16:35Speaker 6: Marlow? He was home, honey, You couldn't suspect him. Marlow
- 16:39Speaker 6: Wyandre is the sweetest man in the word.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Easy, honey. I didn't say the dude did it, and
- 16:43Speaker 2: as being home doesn't say he didn't. People sometimes pay
- 16:47Speaker 2: other people to do that dirty work for me.
- 16:48Speaker 6: You know, just what are you trying to say?
- 16:50Speaker 2: I had made a final do and I did also.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I found he was suffering from shock and has been
- 16:54Speaker 2: since last night when Missus Wyatt told him she was
- 16:56Speaker 2: going to fold the show.
- 16:59Speaker 11: Yeah yeah, Vivian would run.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Him, and half a dozen more I couldn't.
- 17:02Speaker 2: They's all right, so you've all got plenty of motive.
- 17:05Speaker 6: What about Huskell? We know he hated Missus? Why it
- 17:08Speaker 6: isn't revenge? Motives revenge? And the fact that you saw
- 17:12Speaker 6: his car, why do you insist on understanding him?
- 17:14Speaker 2: Don't? There's another angle. It's called hit and run, and
- 17:18Speaker 2: I know that it ties in tight with La Doo,
- 17:20Speaker 2: Missus Wyatt and the actual killer. And I don't understand
- 17:24Speaker 2: neither yet. Look, do you know where Scully Haskell lives.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Where does he hang out?
- 17:29Speaker 6: Sometimes at the bar at Wielshire Garden.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Tuta, Okay, I'll try it. You go back to your
- 17:34Speaker 2: place up on the hills. I'll find it when I
- 17:36Speaker 2: got some answers. Now hurry up and get out of here,
- 17:37Speaker 2: will YEA. Somebody might have heard the shot and called it.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Somebody did hear the shot? Go on, get out. Oh
- 17:43Speaker 2: but come on, heavy and get a cab and go
- 17:44Speaker 2: straight home.
- 17:45Speaker 11: Do you crying there?
- 17:46Speaker 2: Oh God, I'm trying it.
- 17:47Speaker 7: Hey, hey, heavy and you forgot your car?
- 17:49Speaker 11: Heavy and you.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Oh no, baby, you forgot your cap. For a long second,
- 18:01Speaker 2: I just held the titanstead Hi elizabethan color enough gathered
- 18:05Speaker 2: cloth or rig o lion sides. It could have been
- 18:08Speaker 2: what the garage attendant thought he had seen running away
- 18:10Speaker 2: from the car that they would used. But the garage
- 18:12Speaker 2: attendant could have been mistaken too. I told myself that
- 18:15Speaker 2: leaping higher conclusions was strictly for ballet dancers. I jammed
- 18:19Speaker 2: the cape into a small bungle and left via the
- 18:21Speaker 2: surface engines. Just the police sirened up. I took the
- 18:24Speaker 2: Great Circle route back to my car, tossed the cape
- 18:26Speaker 2: on the seat next to me and drove fast for
- 18:28Speaker 2: the bar at the Wiltshire Gardens Hotel. It was a
- 18:41Speaker 2: kind of flattering pink merrit place where they are dirt
- 18:44Speaker 2: It long ago replaced the pretzel. But Haskell wasn't in sight.
- 18:48Speaker 2: The only person around who could possibly be of any
- 18:50Speaker 2: help to me was the delicate George millerical.
- 18:53Speaker 7: Mister Margot, have you seen Vivian? I am beside myself
- 18:56Speaker 7: with Wadi.
- 18:57Speaker 11: He's all right, melicoch she's not.
- 18:59Speaker 4: I know it is monsieur le dou that she still
- 19:01Speaker 4: worries about him.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Him in a little bit more, George, I'll tell me
- 19:04Speaker 2: you know where I can find Scully Haskell.
- 19:06Speaker 7: Yes, I do.
- 19:07Speaker 11: He was just here for a drink. Where'd he go?
- 19:10Speaker 7: You're being very bruce, mister Marvel, being.

- 19:38Speaker 11: Who was that?
- 19:38Speaker 2: Missus? Whyatt she was shot? That might have been a
- 19:40Speaker 2: Haskell because she discharged him. Maybe, oh, maybe something more complicated,
- 19:45Speaker 2: like a hit and run accident that belongs to a
- 19:47Speaker 2: duo but somebody wants to cover. Doesn't make any sense
- 19:50Speaker 2: to you? He's a kind No should it No? What's more,
- 19:55Speaker 2: it shouldn't the Vivian either.
- 19:57Speaker 7: What are you getting at?
- 19:58Speaker 2: There isn't time to expe and call it thinking out loud,
- 20:02Speaker 2: thinking about this cape, for example, it belongs to Vivian
- 20:05Speaker 2: about the testimony of a whiskey garage attendant, all of
- 20:08Speaker 2: which makes me hope real hard that Haskell's the boy.
- 20:11Speaker 2: More thinking out loud, Maybe look where can I find Haskell?
- 20:16Speaker 9: The Paradise Court Motel on Vine He has a bungle
- 20:19Speaker 9: of that number three?
- 20:20Speaker 2: Thanks. Thanks. If you're really worried about Vivian, George going
- 20:25Speaker 2: over to a place on Lookout Martin Road and she's
- 20:27Speaker 2: not in good shape.
- 20:29Speaker 11: Here, take this cape with you.
- 20:31Speaker 7: What what did you cut yourself? Your fingers bleeding?
- 20:35Speaker 13: Yeah?
- 20:37Speaker 2: And a slipper of glass, George West. It could have
- 20:40Speaker 2: come from a broken headlight.
- 20:41Speaker 9: Huh from my broken what what are you talking about,
- 20:44Speaker 9: mister Marlin?
- 20:46Speaker 11: The benefit of the dog.
- 20:47Speaker 2: George keeps getting hoted to give it away?
- 20:51Speaker 11: Bring this back to Vivian?
- 20:52Speaker 2: Would you tell us she left it at missus Wyatt's
- 20:54Speaker 2: and then I'm positive? Haskells man howlong George.
- 21:21Speaker 11: Oh, quite, the name's Marlow. I want to talk to you, Haschal.
- 21:26Speaker 5: Always bro get to chase her.
- 21:28Speaker 7: I'm broken.
- 21:29Speaker 5: I'm gonna stay broken until the first the next month.
- 21:31Speaker 11: After that you can get in line.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Oh, you're probably taught the finance company em.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Jeene Wyatt's dead, Haskell, What did you say it? What's
- 21:41Speaker 2: a gun for a lousy temper? Get back?
- 21:43Speaker 5: Hey, wait a minute. I saw you at the theater
- 21:45Speaker 5: tonight and I heard you.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Which pushed me out in front. Now do we talk, Haschal?
- 21:49Speaker 2: What missus Wyatt's murder? You were sloppy and you're off?
- 21:51Speaker 11: You not.
- 21:51Speaker 5: I didn't shoot her.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I didn't even slips on kids.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Oh I know she was shot.
- 21:57Speaker 7: Doesn't prove my fitdot.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Come on, why did you kill missus Wyatt?
- 21:59Speaker 11: I did?
- 22:00Speaker 2: Do you know she was shot?
- 22:01Speaker 4: Because it happened just I got out of my car
- 22:02Speaker 4: and started taught up place.
- 22:04Speaker 7: I was calling up there, Arina or off. The shot
- 22:05Speaker 7: scared me away. I had mallow.
- 22:08Speaker 4: I was soft, but I didn't kill it.
- 22:09Speaker 11: But interference on that hit and run you were covering
- 22:11Speaker 11: with plenty of reason.
- 22:12Speaker 7: What are you talking about?
- 22:13Speaker 5: Hit and run?
- 22:13Speaker 2: Hit and run?
- 22:15Speaker 5: Pas nuts.
- 22:17Speaker 6: Don't congratulations, Handsome, That's.
- 22:24Speaker 11: Just what I had in mind.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Close the door and stands still?
- 22:27Speaker 7: Sure? Now what the name's Nancy Connick? Occupation ex friend
- 22:35Speaker 7: of the unconsciousness.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Don't look so worried, Handsome.
- 22:39Speaker 7: I'm on your side.
- 22:41Speaker 6: I had something in mind exactly like that left cross.
- 22:43Speaker 5: You just threw.
- 22:46Speaker 2: That. Yeah, what's your beef? I took this louse to
- 22:51Speaker 2: a party with me last night and he got so
- 22:53Speaker 2: stink and drunk that I'm still apologizing to people.
- 22:56Speaker 7: He was with you last night, me and a couple
- 22:59Speaker 7: of burden from eight thirty to five am.
- 23:04Speaker 2: He never left, not for a second.
- 23:08Speaker 7: The loud mouth was positive.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Nobody could get along without him.
- 23:13Speaker 7: What's that got to do with you?
- 23:14Speaker 2: Too much? Tell Haskell, I'll be in touch, will you.
- 23:17Speaker 2: I got to run? Oh what are you looking at?
- 23:22Speaker 11: It's just a program from the ballet, is it?
- 23:24Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 23:26Speaker 6: Pascal has them all over the place after all.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, so oh so, Like I said, Nancy, I
- 23:33Speaker 2: got a run. It was fifteen stop and go minutes
- 23:42Speaker 2: from Haskell's place at the Hollywood Hills, and another five
- 23:45Speaker 2: screeching up the paved snake that was Lookout Mountain Road.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Finally it was there, out of my car and running
- 23:50Speaker 2: toward number eight fifty seven, which was a collection of
- 23:52Speaker 2: windows and a rustic log frame half jutting out into space.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Around on the fact there was a wooden Sunday blow
- 23:58Speaker 2: it on either side, huge rocks on the edge of
- 24:00Speaker 2: the cliff directly below only the dark Barmer's Canyon from
- 24:09Speaker 2: the end of the porch near me there was a
- 24:10Speaker 2: long flight of stairs, and I started up, one careful,
- 24:14Speaker 2: noiseless step at a time, my hands tied around the
- 24:17Speaker 2: thirty eighth. Suddenly, in the wind light at the film
- 24:20Speaker 2: slice Moon, I saw Vivian nordway back to the flimsy
- 24:24Speaker 2: porch rail of face and ugly.
- 24:25Speaker 13: Knot of t George inches away from her, and Brandish
- 24:29Speaker 13: refused to kill missus Wyatt, mister half crazed answer or
- 24:33Speaker 13: everything delicate, Jake, It's too late.
- 24:38Speaker 9: Vivian Marlowe knows this cape was what the garage attendant saw.
- 24:41Speaker 9: And do you know how because of a stupid little thing,
- 24:45Speaker 9: a slipper up glass that was caught in it, which
- 24:48Speaker 9: came from the broken headlights that the wearer of the
- 24:50Speaker 9: cape replaced. A wearer who was covering up Andre la
- 24:53Speaker 9: DU's hit and run accident, saw that he could have
- 24:55Speaker 9: the pig what he wanted.
- 24:56Speaker 6: You wor Mina was after Hatscal.
- 24:59Speaker 7: He thinks has kill missus. Why he only hopes that.
- 25:02Speaker 9: And he'll find out one way or another that the
- 25:05Speaker 9: beautiful ballerina is guilty.
- 25:07Speaker 7: Then he'll be forced to come back here after you us.
- 25:11Speaker 7: Of course you're not videos.
- 25:13Speaker 11: I am.
- 25:14Speaker 9: The cape is mine, not yours. You only used it tonight.
- 25:17Speaker 9: That's the only thing he doesn't know and never will,
- 25:21Speaker 9: because you will have killed yourself after confessing to me.
- 25:26Speaker 7: It's the only way video, you or me. But it's
- 25:30Speaker 7: always been that way, hasn't it? Even in the ballet
- 25:33Speaker 7: where one or the other of us had to be starved?
- 25:36Speaker 7: Too bad? It wasn't I Yeah, crying, shame.
- 25:43Speaker 6: Jump round there.
- 25:53Speaker 2: It's a greater leap even for let's get out of here.
- 26:09Speaker 2: A long time at police headquarters, but finally all concerned.
- 26:12Speaker 2: It made this statement allow. It was more or less
- 26:14Speaker 2: satisfied Andrea due never knew he'd hit anyone who was
- 26:17Speaker 2: clear to hit and run. That left me in the
- 26:20Speaker 2: ballerina driving into a friend's house where she was going
- 26:23Speaker 2: to spend the night.
- 26:24Speaker 6: Pila, I know you must have had enough of questions
- 26:27Speaker 6: and answers.
- 26:28Speaker 5: But.
- 26:30Speaker 6: Yes, the reason George killed missus Whytet.
- 26:34Speaker 11: Well, see Vivian.
- 26:35Speaker 2: It started last night when George went to see Andrea
- 26:38Speaker 2: do because he was so bitter about his partner show
- 26:40Speaker 2: being cut down. And that was when he saw Andrea
- 26:42Speaker 2: returning for Missus Wyatt, shaken up in half days and with.
- 26:46Speaker 6: A broken headlight and other signs of having hit someone.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and from there George thought fast covered it all up,
- 26:52Speaker 2: found out exactly what had happened from this morning's paper. Probably,
- 26:55Speaker 2: and waited when you hired me tonight. He must have
- 26:59Speaker 2: followed middle a DU's overheard Andrea tell me that missus
- 27:01Speaker 2: Wyatt was going.
- 27:02Speaker 11: To pull out.
- 27:03Speaker 6: Oh, so he went to her, tried to stop her.
- 27:06Speaker 2: And couldn't Yeah anything else?
- 27:09Speaker 4: Oh yes, oh one thing?
- 27:11Speaker 7: Oh that's a hostel Feld.
- 27:13Speaker 6: Okay, what made you hurry back? To my place from
- 27:17Speaker 6: Haskell's motel when time meant so much.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Hunch honey. So I was leaving Scully Haskells I saw
- 27:24Speaker 2: a stack of ballet programs on a table in his
- 27:27Speaker 2: living room. Cavana was very interesting. Features you in the
- 27:31Speaker 2: picture of George majestic in his high colored cape.
- 27:36Speaker 4: That was it?
- 27:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that was it.
- 27:43Speaker 6: Good night. Will you call me tomorrow sometime please.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I'll call it tomorrow.
- 27:56Speaker 6: It's a nice night, feel.
- 28:00Speaker 2: So good to be alive.
- 28:08Speaker 6: Good night.
- 28:21Speaker 2: And I drove straight home, the quiet empty all through
- 28:23Speaker 2: the quiet empty streets, thinking all the way about ballet,
- 28:28Speaker 2: which to me had always been something very delicate, you know,
- 28:31Speaker 2: for the long hair, strictly the addy side. I thought
- 28:35Speaker 2: about the people i'd met it were connected with it,
- 28:38Speaker 2: ballerina with a lot of courage. When courage counted, the
- 28:41Speaker 2: I strung Andre la Dume, Haskell a muscleman, and George
- 28:47Speaker 2: Vicious is anything I'd ever met on skid roll. And
- 28:51Speaker 2: I was still thinking about them when I got out
- 28:52Speaker 2: of my car. But then, for the first time I
- 28:55Speaker 2: noticed a little white envelope on the seat next to me.
- 28:58Speaker 2: I had my name on it the inside. Was it
- 29:02Speaker 2: a ticket for the Borrows might may same seat I
- 29:05Speaker 2: had before.
- 29:06Speaker 7: Yeah, well I figured i'd go.
- 29:08Speaker 2: You know, those leaps they do pretty good. We call
- 29:11Speaker 2: them are are No, that's yeah, they're pretty good.

- 32:00Speaker 1: Marlowe gives information to that he really ought not to.
- 32:04Speaker 1: But anyway, we do turn to listener comments and feedback,

- 32:45Speaker 1: Always great to hear him, and Robert says would have
- 32:49Speaker 1: been great if he had a detective show of his own. Well,
- 32:53Speaker 1: definitely over the radio. Like I said, on television, he
- 32:57Speaker 1: had Cannon, but there were some limitations on that.
- 33:03Speaker 2: We do have.
- 33:04Speaker 1: There's an episode of Escape that stars Bill Conory we're
- 33:08Speaker 1: eventually going to play, and I think that's all the
- 33:16Speaker 1: other programming we have him in. He ended up playing
- 33:19Speaker 1: a lot of heavies and very few protagonists. Well, thanks
- 33:23Speaker 1: so much for your comments. That will do it for today.
