- 0:00SPEAKER_00: After thee,
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Our Father,
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: there's a little prayer that we pray,
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: which goes, Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Graciously grant peace in our days,
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: from all distress,
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: That prayer is called the embolism, which sounds like a medical condition.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: So it's like, what's an embolism?
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: So I tell out in Greek, embolismos is an interpolation.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Like, okay, well, what's an interpolation?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Well, that's like an interjection or something that's put in, right?
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: So this prayer is added in to the liturgy.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: It's added in after the Our Father.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: It's a kind of a reflection on the Our Father.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: It's kind of a response to the Our Father.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: It's like thinking about the Our Father, the ideas that we just prayed.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of, you know, taking up some of those things.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And so that's in the liturgy after the Our Father,
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: in almost every liturgy, there's something like this, right?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: A little sort of a response to the Our Father that the priest says.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Like I say, it looks different at different times, in different liturgies, in different places.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: The interesting thing to me about that is that, yes,
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: it's a beautiful little prayer,
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: but It's essentially something that someone came up with.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: You know, it's a response to a prayer.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: It's not a prayer from Scripture.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: It's not they are followed.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: But that's what the liturgy is, right?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: The liturgy is essentially our response to Christ's action.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: The most ancient liturgies,
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: as we've talked about before,
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: just consisted of those words of consecration, pretty much, right?
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: The words of That Jesus Christ said, that's the core of the liturgy.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: That's the core of the mass.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Everything else that we're doing here is something that
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: over time Christians have done and other people.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: So that was nice.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: You know, let's keep doing that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And they added to it and they preserved these things.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And so we have this kind of beautiful liturgy.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: That's this patchwork of all kinds of different things,
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: different pieces taken from different times throughout our history.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: That's a beautiful thing.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: That's a wonderful thing.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: But people get very fixated in humble liturgy, right?
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: If anything is changed, they're like, oh my gosh, you can't change anything.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: This is this.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: No, it's not something that comes from God.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: It's something that comes from us.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: It's something the church can change and does change.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Sometimes there's a beautiful thing and that's added in just like this embolism.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, this is a beautiful thing.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Let's add that in.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Let's do that.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Let's reflect on the Our Father using these words.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I think what's important when it comes to liturgy is not that I do the changes myself.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Because I could think, oh, I know better.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I have this amazing thing that I'm doing.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I want to add this in.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Well, that's the part where that could be kind of pride.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: I'm not supposed to make up my own liturgy.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Maybe I have some great ideas.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Maybe I have some beautiful prayers.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: And maybe eventually those things are added in.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Maybe I can suggest that.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: But I think the attitude that we need to have before the liturgy,
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: before everything, is an attitude of humility and union with Christ.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: That's my job in life.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: My job in life is to encounter Christ, to humbly receive whatever Christ gives me.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: If he gives me this liturgy,
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: which is from all these different places, I can humbly receive that.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: I can follow that.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I can pray that.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I can take these prayers that church has given me and I can pray them as best I can.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: That's my job.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: My job is not to think I could do better.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: I could do this.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: I could do that.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And if I'm close to Christ,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: if I really am holy,
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: if my life is transformed, then maybe Christ does suggest something for me, right?
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Maybe some prayer,
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: some devotion,
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: something for someone's life comes about through me, but then it's not from me.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: It's not my own pride doing that.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Our job is not to try to do something different, something new, something new.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Our job is to draw close to Christ,
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: to become holy,
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: to listen again,
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: so that whatever comes through us might not be from us, but from God working in us.
