- 0:00Speaker 1: That's saying, been a minute since last time I saw.
- 0:04Speaker 1: It wasn't even in like professional mode. It was like
- 0:06Speaker 1: it was like chill out at Mitchell at a sporting
- 0:08Speaker 1: event mode.
- 0:09Speaker 2: We were we were enjoying the time.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Harper Grace, how are you?
- 0:12Speaker 2: I'm wonderful, how are you?
- 0:14Speaker 1: Life is good? You're getting ready to go do all
- 0:16Speaker 1: sorts of Fourth of July partying.
- 0:18Speaker 2: You're going to d C all the way to DC.
- 0:20Speaker 3: I've only been to DC one time, So just a
- 0:22Speaker 3: bunch of friends are gonna all cram in one hotel
- 0:24Speaker 3: room and have a have a time, so it should
- 0:26Speaker 3: be fun.
- 0:27Speaker 2: So I'm writing America.
- 0:28Speaker 1: My favorite part about what you said is, so you're
- 0:31Speaker 1: going to be in DC Fourth of July America two fifty,
- 0:35Speaker 1: which like has been the biggest deal for a while now.
- 0:38Speaker 1: The fireworks are going to.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Be sick Guinness book A.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I think they're saying it's like going to begin us
- 0:43Speaker 3: book A World Records firework show.
- 0:45Speaker 2: So I some supposedly my friend heard on the TV.
- 0:50Speaker 3: I don't know if this is true, but apparently they're
- 0:52Speaker 3: like they're going to set off like like last year
- 0:55Speaker 3: was eighty thousand or something, and the guy's like.
- 0:56Speaker 2: We're sitting off twenty times that. So I'm like, oh
- 0:58Speaker 2: my gosh, like one hundred fifty thousand. Like I don't know.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I was homeschool so I don't know the exact mouth
- 1:03Speaker 3: on that, but I'm like, that's a lot of firework.
- 1:04Speaker 3: It's gonna be there for like five hours, just staring
- 1:06Speaker 3: at the sky for a long time.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Meet you were homeschooled. She was public school, and she
- 1:11Speaker 1: don't know the numbers either, So we're fine.
- 1:14Speaker 2: She catches straight.
- 1:16Speaker 1: We try, but but it's it's funny because fireworks are
- 1:21Speaker 1: a big deal. We were just talking on the radio
- 1:22Speaker 1: the other day. Drone shows have become popular as well.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Are you into drone.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Shows at all? Drone shows?
- 1:28Speaker 1: Have you seen a drone show? They're so? Have you
- 1:31Speaker 1: as anyone else?
- 1:32Speaker 2: Drones show?
- 1:33Speaker 1: It's so do you like? Thank you?
- 1:38Speaker 2: Is that where they find them up and they.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And then the lights so they move around right and
- 1:43Speaker 1: it's like pre programmed, so they move and then the
- 1:45Speaker 1: lights turn on and then they do whatever their motion is.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Then the lights turn off and then they reconfigure. I
- 1:50Speaker 1: think it is the lamest thing I've ever seen in
- 1:52Speaker 1: my life.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not sure I would be amused or like
- 1:55Speaker 2: entertained by that.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It was Tay thinks it would look cool, but she
- 1:58Speaker 1: hasn't seen one in person. I've seen went person and
- 2:00Speaker 1: I was like, does it make.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Do they have music going on? Like oh, you're really
- 2:04Speaker 2: just looking at them and.
- 2:06Speaker 1: It's not like it's not like they go and then
- 2:09Speaker 1: the lights come on and they go. It's just like
- 2:12Speaker 1: you hear that and then the lights yeah, and it's
- 2:16Speaker 1: more of like a oh oh nice.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And so like, wow, that was crazy.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I want I wanted to light up and scare
- 2:25Speaker 1: the hell.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I want to feel like I'm gonna get shot,
- 2:27Speaker 3: like oh Godtually, this is.
- 2:30Speaker 2: A crazy story.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Sounds like my neighborhood, my mom.
- 2:32Speaker 2: This is real, like real, real, really for real. My
- 2:36Speaker 2: mother high school years.
- 2:39Speaker 3: She was going to look at the Fourth of July
- 2:41Speaker 3: fires and apparently she said she like they watched something
- 2:44Speaker 3: and then she kept hearing like this, you like getting
- 2:47Speaker 3: closer and closer, and she's like, what is the noise?
- 2:49Speaker 2: And it literally smacked her back, like some fireworks smacked
- 2:53Speaker 2: her back, and she said that the air like left
- 2:55Speaker 2: her body and she was down on the ground and
- 2:58Speaker 2: then she like got back.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Up was like that, and it's an ongoing joke that
- 3:02Speaker 3: like if anything were to happen, it would always happen
- 3:04Speaker 3: to me and my mom And she's like, that's where
- 3:05Speaker 3: it started.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Was high school. I got snacked in the back by
- 3:07Speaker 2: a firework. So poor mom.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It's so funny how like traumatizing fireworks can be. We
- 3:13Speaker 1: did my aunt like lived in a nice neighborhood and
- 3:16Speaker 1: they all did fireworks in the street and she uh,
- 3:19Speaker 1: and so we were all in the garage. So they
- 3:21Speaker 1: do the fireworks on the street. Well, I'll never forget.
- 3:23Speaker 1: It's like burned into my pupils and my brain and
- 3:27Speaker 1: everything is one of the fireworks was like a like right, yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 1: and then it goes when it gets up.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I don't know why I had that sound effects.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I could have explained it to but yeah, But all
- 3:37Speaker 1: of a sudden, as they lit the wick thing, it
- 3:40Speaker 1: started going to s over. It tipped over and shot
- 3:43Speaker 1: right into the garage. And I'm telling you, the oldest,
- 3:47Speaker 1: whitest people were diving in every direction like they were
- 3:50Speaker 1: in the middle of World War Two. It was like, oh,
- 3:53Speaker 1: lawn chairs flying. The fruit salad tipped over off the
- 3:58Speaker 1: table like it was.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I feel like that happens a lot.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Like we used to light fireworks and bonfires and stuff
- 4:05Speaker 3: all the time, and there are there have been multiple
- 4:06Speaker 3: times that, you know, the guys would be like, let's
- 4:09Speaker 3: like fifteen at one time by the lake, which is like,
- 4:11Speaker 3: really not a great idea, but they do it anyways,
- 4:15Speaker 3: and then yeah, they'll tip over and everything, and I
- 4:16Speaker 3: think I have a video of one guy being like.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Bay'l bail, everyone bail, everyone bail. But yeah we bailed.
- 4:23Speaker 3: We ran fast, and Lord Willing did smack my back,
- 4:26Speaker 3: but I felt for my mama. You know, Oh that's
- 4:29Speaker 3: that's scary. It's not don't play.
- 4:31Speaker 2: With the fire That's what I like.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Watching them is fine. The other thing is, I feel
- 4:36Speaker 1: like lightning fireworks feels like a guy's thing to do,
- 4:40Speaker 1: but I feel like it should be a girl's thing
- 4:41Speaker 1: to do, because we do dumb stuff with fireworks. When
- 4:45Speaker 1: I was younger, we would like like light a bobcat
- 4:48Speaker 1: and like shoot it at animals as they ran away.
- 4:51Speaker 2: It was, oh, that's that's kind of me to do.
- 4:54Speaker 1: But guys who don't like girls, I just feel'd be
- 4:56Speaker 1: like our guys run around with Roman candles and be like,
- 5:00Speaker 1: We're like, there, don't.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Hold as it's going off, and then the girls are like,
- 5:05Speaker 2: what the Sparkler the Disney Channel, Oh my god, watch me.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Oh they're cute.
- 5:14Speaker 1: All right, Well let's talk music now.
- 5:15Speaker 2: That's we could talk from the great what.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Brought you to music? Because we're just talking gymnasts. Do
- 5:22Speaker 1: you have a gymnast background?
- 5:23Speaker 3: Do you have a gymnast background? I was really supposed
- 5:25Speaker 3: to follow in my mom's footsteps. She was an elite
- 5:28Speaker 3: gymnast and was really really good, and so as a
- 5:31Speaker 3: six years old six year old, I was training for
- 5:34Speaker 3: Olympic hopefools at the time, and then I wanted to quit.
- 5:36Speaker 2: And do music and mom said music stupid, stand up fitness.
- 5:40Speaker 2: But I did not do that.
- 5:41Speaker 3: So the thing that I've really found a lot of
- 5:45Speaker 3: love for country music specifically was actually one listening to
- 5:48Speaker 3: it with my dad in his truck.
- 5:51Speaker 2: But also my nana played a big part.
- 5:52Speaker 3: She had an accordion growing up, and she would sit
- 5:56Speaker 3: in this wooden archback chair in the middle of the
- 5:58Speaker 3: living room and play the heck out of that thing.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Whether that was like Roy Orberson, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash,
- 6:04Speaker 3: Loretta Lynn, Patsy Klein, like just all the greats, and
- 6:08Speaker 3: we would sing and dance and have the record player
- 6:11Speaker 3: on and she'd just play the accordion for hours and hours.
- 6:14Speaker 3: And every time I went to Nana's house, I wanted
- 6:16Speaker 3: her to bring it out as soon as I got there.
- 6:18Speaker 3: And so my nana gifted me my very first acoustic
- 6:21Speaker 3: guitar as a seven year old. And as soon as
- 6:25Speaker 3: that thing was in my hands, it's like I never
- 6:27Speaker 3: ever wanted to put it down.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I slept with it next to my bed. I woke up.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I wrote songs about shampoo conditioner and homeschooling and you know.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Whatever I was going through as a child.
- 6:40Speaker 3: But yeah, I just found this super intense love for
- 6:44Speaker 3: wanting to tell stories as vividly as the ones I
- 6:47Speaker 3: loved so much on the record player.
- 6:50Speaker 1: When you say listening to music and whatnot, what are
- 6:52Speaker 1: some songs that like come.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Up as you like?
- 6:55Speaker 1: Because obviously I had. Elvis was an influence on me
- 6:59Speaker 1: as a kid because my grandmother, when I spent time
- 7:01Speaker 1: with her, it was on all the time. But I
- 7:04Speaker 1: can pick out a couple of songs I can't pick
- 7:06Speaker 1: out like everyone we ever listened to. But what are
- 7:09Speaker 1: some songs that you think to those times that stand
- 7:11Speaker 1: out versus others.
- 7:13Speaker 3: One of the very first ones was I Can't help
- 7:15Speaker 3: falling in Love with You, and that was not only
- 7:17Speaker 3: Dolly's version, but Elvis's version as well. That was something
- 7:20Speaker 3: that I thought was so simple but so.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Eloquent and beautiful all at once.
- 7:27Speaker 3: So that's been something that I have loved ever since
- 7:31Speaker 3: I was a child.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Blue Suede Shoes by.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Elvis was something that I would make my mom and
- 7:36Speaker 3: dad turn the TV off so I could get my
- 7:38Speaker 3: little hips moving and dancing and grooven. And then Jolene
- 7:43Speaker 3: by Dolly was the very first song I ever learned
- 7:46Speaker 3: on the guitar my Nana Bottany, and so as like
- 7:50Speaker 3: throwback songs, those were the core ones that I think
- 7:53Speaker 3: kind of shaped what I loved the most and the
- 7:56Speaker 3: things that remind me of why I fell in love
- 7:58Speaker 3: with it in the first place.
- 8:00Speaker 1: As a as a newer artist introducing yourself to like
- 8:03Speaker 1: mainstream country music fans, you have your songs, right, but
- 8:08Speaker 1: covers can be a big a big introduction as well,
- 8:11Speaker 1: especially if you're playing a show like oh hey here,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I'll play a song that I know you love and
- 8:15Speaker 1: you'll sing along to, and then I'm gonna you know,
- 8:17Speaker 1: once you're like I'm having the best time, I'm gonna
- 8:19Speaker 1: hit you with the song you've never heard before. Yeah,
- 8:21Speaker 1: but it's mine and you're gonna get to know me
- 8:22Speaker 1: a little bit. So when it comes to like the
- 8:25Speaker 1: covers that you pick in those moments to help you
- 8:27Speaker 1: connect with the audience, you know, before you introduce one
- 8:31Speaker 1: of your songs or something brand new or something that's
- 8:32Speaker 1: been out, what are some of the covers that you'll
- 8:34Speaker 1: go to?
- 8:36Speaker 3: Well, one of the very Joline Obviously, that has been
- 8:39Speaker 3: one that I've kept in my set because it makes
- 8:41Speaker 3: me feel like I get to bring home with me
- 8:43Speaker 3: everywhere I go. But when I had a piano on
- 8:46Speaker 3: stage growing up, I did House of the Rising Sun
- 8:50Speaker 3: a lot. That was something that I really love to do.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And then recently I kind of filtered back.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Wake Me Up by a Vigi was always one that
- 8:58Speaker 3: I loved playing on guitar, and during CMA fest and
- 9:02Speaker 3: a couple of the festivals that I did prior to
- 9:04Speaker 3: that as well, I kind of brought that one back
- 9:06Speaker 3: and I forgot how much I loved that song. And
- 9:08Speaker 3: so it's nice though to like you said, filter in
- 9:11Speaker 3: ones that people really really know I've done since You've
- 9:15Speaker 3: Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson. That seems to get the
- 9:17Speaker 3: girls going for that song, you know, scream it at
- 9:20Speaker 3: the top of your lungs.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Even the guys, you know, yeah, they get it onto. Yeah,
- 9:24Speaker 2: those are like the ones off the top of my head?
- 9:26Speaker 2: Is it?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Are there songs that are intimidating to cover because any song,
- 9:32Speaker 1: any song has the potential to become its own, like
- 9:36Speaker 1: life and being, and some are just so gigantic that
- 9:39Speaker 1: it's like, if I don't sing that the way someone's expecting,
- 9:43Speaker 1: the rest of the day is not going to go.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Great for me. I don't know.
- 9:46Speaker 3: That's a great question because I feel like I had
- 9:49Speaker 3: a vocal coach growing up, and she was from our church,
- 9:53Speaker 3: and she would keep me for a long period of
- 9:56Speaker 3: time because I was homeschool and.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I had nothing else.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Would do you know all out and hear about fifteen
- 10:00Speaker 3: gajillion times. You'll be like, Okay, we get it, you're homeschool.
- 10:03Speaker 2: To shut up.
- 10:05Speaker 3: No, But she used to say, like I harperized things,
- 10:08Speaker 3: and so I would always take a song and make
- 10:11Speaker 3: it my own. But as far as like I don't
- 10:14Speaker 3: think I've ever thought of covers of like, oh I
- 10:16Speaker 3: can't touch that one, or maybe that's scared.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Really it would.
- 10:20Speaker 3: I think the only song that I would be nervous
- 10:21Speaker 3: about bombing would just be the cover of the national Anthem.
- 10:24Speaker 2: And I've already done that, bombed it, So it's okay.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Oh when I was a child eleven years old, oh no.
- 10:32Speaker 1: But that's yeah. It's funny because I asked an artist
- 10:35Speaker 1: one time. We were in Vegas and I was working
- 10:37Speaker 1: for the hockey team in Vegas, and I had asked
- 10:39Speaker 1: them like, hey, would you do the anthem? And they're
- 10:41Speaker 1: like nope, And I go, you won't And he's like,
- 10:44Speaker 1: I don't know. It's not like a disrespect thing. He goes,
- 10:47Speaker 1: If I kill it, I was supposed to. It's a
- 10:49Speaker 1: natural anthem, he goes. If I just do okay, I suck.
- 10:53Speaker 1: If I mess up, it.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Will live forever.
- 10:55Speaker 1: He goes, So there's no benefit to me doing the anthem.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's one of those songs that you really, I mean,
- 11:03Speaker 3: it's a hit or a mess, and whatever happens, the
- 11:05Speaker 3: whole world is going to see it. And so in
- 11:07Speaker 3: my case, as an eleven year old, to kind of
- 11:09Speaker 3: like brush past a long story. I didn't couldn't hear myself,
- 11:13Speaker 3: technical difficulties. All the things ended up actually being known.
- 11:16Speaker 3: When you look up like the worst national anthem ever,
- 11:19Speaker 3: I am one of the ones that pops up like worse.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Than category of like five top five.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Steven Tyler, Roseanbar Sina Aguilera, and Harper Grace were the
- 11:28Speaker 3: worst national anthems, like listed.
- 11:30Speaker 1: A Fergie during the NBA also thrown me.
- 11:33Speaker 2: She dethrowned me, because that's.
- 11:35Speaker 1: The worst one I've ever heard.
- 11:36Speaker 3: No disrespect, no disrespect, love her, But that was actually
- 11:40Speaker 3: the year that she had dethrown me from being the
- 11:41Speaker 3: worst national anthem.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So.
- 11:45Speaker 3: For Harper, but I still actually sing it a lot.
- 11:50Speaker 3: There's a piece of my uh story and journey where
- 11:53Speaker 3: I actually really have a heart to go into different
- 11:55Speaker 3: schools and foundations and talk about anti bullying because at
- 11:58Speaker 3: the time that I bombed the anthem, like had death
- 12:00Speaker 3: threats with knives and into our personal mailboxes at home,
- 12:03Speaker 3: people saying how they were gonna like murder me and
- 12:05Speaker 3: do really really bad things, like horrible things. If you
- 12:09Speaker 3: think of the worst thing possible that could have been
- 12:11Speaker 3: said or done physical bullying, cyberbullying, all of the kinds
- 12:14Speaker 3: of bullying. I can very confidently raise my hand and
- 12:17Speaker 3: be like it, heard it, done, it got it.
- 12:19Speaker 2: That's why. But I go out.
- 12:23Speaker 3: And I've got I think at this point, we've done
- 12:25Speaker 3: like thirteen or fourteen different ballparks, arenas and stadiums in
- 12:28Speaker 3: the last two years where I've kind of gone on
- 12:31Speaker 3: what I like to call a redemption tour where I've
- 12:34Speaker 3: redeemed myself and I've sang it a couple of times,
- 12:38Speaker 3: and it's scary. I mean, I get a little bit
- 12:41Speaker 3: anxious and stressed out prior. But if I can show
- 12:44Speaker 3: people that if you fail, you can try again, get
- 12:47Speaker 3: back up and use the thing that you were scared
- 12:49Speaker 3: of as ammunition to just keep following the dream that
- 12:52Speaker 3: was placed in your heart. So it's dare fine, and
- 12:55Speaker 3: I want to put my pins, but I don't, and
- 12:57Speaker 3: I'll just sing it.
- 12:58Speaker 2: And then as they.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Say you can do, we're about to put you on
- 13:02Speaker 1: stage here.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Jason wonderful. After I told you it's great, but that
- 13:07Speaker 2: was it. Now you're not exactly I'm not wearing dress
- 13:11Speaker 2: that would be even worse.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Let's uh, you just gave me a funny story, but
- 13:17Speaker 1: I'm not gonna tell it of me, of somebody else
- 13:20Speaker 1: in a grocery store, But it's fine. Last thing I
- 13:24Speaker 1: want to ask is, you're going to be meeting a
- 13:26Speaker 1: lot of people for the first time as you play
- 13:28Speaker 1: the stage here, what's the song that you're like this
- 13:32Speaker 1: in your in your library of songs you have now, new, old,
- 13:38Speaker 1: what's the song that you're like, Hey, if I'm really
- 13:39Speaker 1: gonna introduce myself, I have to make sure to play
- 13:42Speaker 1: this one.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Oh, that's a really that's a really hard question.
- 13:48Speaker 3: I think right now, Right now I would say, oh, gosh,
- 13:57Speaker 3: you stumped me, because there's I've written over five hundre
- 14:00Speaker 3: and eighty songs in the last three years, and.
- 14:05Speaker 2: It like fluctuates each season.
- 14:08Speaker 3: But I think I wrote a song recently called Tattoos
- 14:11Speaker 3: and Heartache that I really like. It just reminds me
- 14:14Speaker 3: of like the classic country that I grew up listening to.
- 14:18Speaker 3: But right now I'm in a season of really loving
- 14:21Speaker 3: like my friends and I have a really cool group
- 14:24Speaker 3: of girlfriends, and so there's a song called Nowhere that
- 14:27Speaker 3: is coming out really soon actually, and my best friends
- 14:31Speaker 3: are all in the music video, and we all I
- 14:34Speaker 3: we went to my birthday trip, and I have pieces
- 14:36Speaker 3: of them, like taking the camera and doing stuff with it,
- 14:39Speaker 3: and uh so that's I would say that because the
- 14:43Speaker 3: biggest piece of my life is just to be as
- 14:45Speaker 3: authentic and real as possible, and I think having close
- 14:48Speaker 3: community and friendships are really important. And so I'm singing
- 14:52Speaker 3: nowhere today, so let's do it. There's yeah, that's a
- 14:56Speaker 3: good question, of course.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Thanks having me
