- 0:10Some old friends facing our fears, laughing through the
- 0:13chaos and drinking some beers. So here's to the laughs, the
- 0:16crumbs and the cheers. All the awkward moments.
- 0:19And we're still here 'cause then.
- 0:20Leanne, we're just doing our thing.
- 0:22It's our crazy life. 01 more thing.
- 0:25One more thing. Welcome to Oh and one more
- 0:33thing, a podcast where 2 long time friends try to figure out
- 0:36what the heck is going on with this crazy thing called middle
- 0:39age. It's a mix of stories of how we
- 0:40navigate our lives and maybe some questionable advice.
- 0:43Some days we're wise, other days we're just trying to remember
- 0:46where the heck we left our phone.
- 0:47So join us as we laugh, groan, and maybe even learn a little
- 0:50something about surviving in the second-half of life.
- 0:53Oh, and one more thing. Hey, I'm Rob, welcome to 011
- 1:07more thing. Hey, I'm Brian.
- 1:08Today is a very special day here at 011 more thing.
- 1:12We've got our very first guest. Who is it?
- 1:17It's our good buddy Jeff Hoxie. Hi, everybody.
- 1:21Hey, Jeff, what is going on? Hey.
- 1:23Thanks for having me, happy to be here.
- 1:25Thanks. We're super excited.
- 1:26We are. Excited.
- 1:27Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:28We haven't had a guest before. I'm your first one.
- 1:30You are the first one, Jeff. You'll always be my first one.
- 1:34Always so memorable, I'm sure. So Jeff is our friend at coffee
- 1:40every Tuesday that hangs out with us.
- 1:42Yes, yes. And what do we know about
- 1:45coffee, Jeff? I think your wife and your kids
- 1:48call it something funny. Well, they call it, Are you
- 1:51going to Old Man coffee? That's what they call Old Man
- 1:54Coffee. My family call it dude dates.
- 1:57Dude, dates. That's a good one, yeah.
- 1:58Yeah, my wife tries to call the coffee.
- 1:59Clutch. I'm not, but coffee clutch is
- 2:01really. Old, I know.
- 2:03But I wouldn't say it's a clutch, right?
- 2:04Right. Yeah, plays into my age group,
- 2:06not yours. We're also not old either, so I
- 2:09don't think it really. Well, you're young.
- 2:11Well, yeah, you're young, but so I'm super excited cause yeah, if
- 2:14you start each episode off with a joke and Jeff's here and I can
- 2:18tell a sports joke cause Brian. I I love sports.
- 2:21No, you don't. Sports.
- 2:23Yeah. Was I not watching The Wild the
- 2:28other day? Well.
- 2:29You did, but you didn't really have much of A choice 'cause it
- 2:31was. That it was on and I who?
- 2:32Was on last night. The Wild.
- 2:37Not quite, Not quite. Yeah.
- 2:38So the Timberwolves were on last night and unfortunately they got
- 2:41bounced from the Western Conference Finals.
- 2:43So you know. Tear, tear.
- 2:45So all all four of the major men's sports teams got together
- 2:48afterwards and had a beer. And, you know, so it's the Twins
- 2:50and the Wolves and the Vikings and and, and the Wild and and
- 2:54the the Twins are like, guys, come on.
- 2:55I mean, it's been 30 plus years. Somebody else has to win a
- 2:58championship in this town. It's been forever.
- 3:00And the Vikings like, OK, yeah, we get it.
- 3:02But we're trying. We we've been at least been to
- 3:03four Super Bowls and we've won some some championship, some
- 3:06conference championships, you know, over the years.
- 3:07And the Wolves are like, yeah, you know, we've won three
- 3:10Western or been in three Western Conference championships, been
- 3:13in the last few. Yeah.
- 3:14So that's been great. And the wild kind of look a
- 3:16little confused and said, wait, you guys get out of the first
- 3:19round? Oh, see, Jeff gets that Jeff.
- 3:24Gets that I'm a little. Yeah, they how many years has it
- 3:28been? A long time. 30 plus it's been
- 3:30oh. No, yeah, I know.
- 3:32US diehards over here. Right, right.
- 3:34So just to give you the guys a little bit background, Jeff is
- 3:38the owner and general contractor of a company called Hoxie
- 3:41Holmes, his company. And so we wanted to give you
- 3:43just a background a little bit here before we jump into
- 3:46interviewing this guy. Established in 2006 by Jeff, he
- 3:51is a premier custom home builder and remodeler.
- 3:53Jeff and his team focus on understanding each client's
- 3:56specific project requirements. Their dedication to high quality
- 3:59craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail builds trust
- 4:02and ensures an exceptional client experience.
- 4:05Hoxie Holmes is committed to integrity, honesty, and superior
- 4:09quality in every project, reflecting their lasting legacy.
- 4:13Jeff, is that true? Man.
- 4:16I took it. Right from you, maybe.
- 4:18Yeah, you. Did I did.
- 4:20No way it. Says it on there.
- 4:23That's a lot of pressure, right? It's a lot to live up to.
- 4:26Every day. I don't think I can do that
- 4:27every day. Come on now, people are
- 4:29listening. I know I would say I'd like to
- 4:31try, but there's a lot of things that go on that I can't control.
- 4:35But we're going to go on and say that you do.
- 4:37I do. Let's go with it.
- 4:39So what do you as as a consumer and from your end, what do you
- 4:43look for in a contractor, good and bad?
- 4:46What do I look for in a contractor?
- 4:47Well, I mean, if I were, you know, going to hire somebody
- 4:49such as yourself, we'll get into that later.
- 4:51What would you look for? I think it starts with a good
- 4:54relationship, a communication style that you relate with and
- 4:56can, you know, exchange pros and cons and what you're looking
- 5:00for. Honesty is a big one.
- 5:03Transparency is a big one, right, Because we're going to
- 5:05work together for anywhere from weeks to months to years,
- 5:09potentially decides on the project years, yes.
- 5:12Some projects take years. Wow.
- 5:16They can be challenging, but also I would imagine, yeah.
- 5:19So honesty, good communication I would say is probably the number
- 5:23one thing start to finish for any project, any contractor.
- 5:26OK, so we thought that it could help our listeners and us to
- 5:31learn a little bit more about the world of construction.
- 5:33I don't know too much about about it.
- 5:34Do you Rob? Well, I didn't until about two
- 5:37months ago. So I'm I hired my good friend
- 5:40Jeff to help us put an addition and a porch on our house.
- 5:43Why yes, you did. Thank you.
- 5:44Yeah, it's a lovely porch. It is a beautiful porch.
- 5:47It is a lovely porch. And it's funny, before we
- 5:49started this process, we actually had this conversation
- 5:51and Jeff was saying about how the process works and how we
- 5:54kind of get your ideas and go back and forth and like, Nah, we
- 5:57know exactly what we want. It'll be easy.
- 5:59Piece of cake. And swear to God, we made about
- 6:0115 changes for we. Oh.
- 6:03For sure, everybody does. Like, you had this idea of what
- 6:06you want, right? But then if you go on the
- 6:08Internet or you go to these showrooms, you start looking.
- 6:10I mean, the options are endless. Yeah.
- 6:13And they don't always tell you what the price is.
- 6:14Then you have to figure out what it costs, and then does it fit
- 6:16your budget? And then you're reworking at 123
- 6:19or 10 times, right? And it was good too, because you
- 6:21obviously have done this a lot longer and saw a lot of things.
- 6:24We didn't even think of that. What do you think about this?
- 6:27What do you think about that? And that was a huge help to us
- 6:29to get some insight as far as kind of I think you had a good
- 6:32idea where we wanted to go and you helped us fine tune it.
- 6:34Good. And that's our goal, right, as
- 6:36we're trying to get you the best product, the best outcome that
- 6:40works for you. Now, everybody is different.
- 6:42What they want is different. Yeah, you're right.
- 6:44We've done this a long time. So you're trying to figure out
- 6:46along the way of where you want to end up, what your budget is
- 6:50and lead you there. Yeah, but I miss things too,
- 6:52right. I mean, there, as you noticed,
- 6:55there is dozens upon dozens or hundreds of decisions to make,
- 6:59yeah. And even we just did a, a three
- 7:01season porch and a deck and it was amazing how many people are
- 7:04involved in every day. I mean, there's one day, I think
- 7:07we had six different contracting groups here trying to get things
- 7:10done. I think to me that's the biggest
- 7:12surprise almost was how you manage that calendar and that
- 7:15schedule as a coordinating all that, that.
- 7:17I mean it has to be a full time 100.
- 7:18Percent full time job for someone person when I started
- 7:21this many years ago is people would do more than one task,
- 7:24right? Right.
- 7:25You would maybe do framing, trimming, siding, roofing.
- 7:28One guy would do all of that. Well, in the last 20 years it's
- 7:31become very specialized where you do one skill, you have a
- 7:35roofer, you have a drywall guy, you have a siding guy, trim
- 7:38Carpenter, right. So as the general contractor,
- 7:41we're bringing all these people in, all these different
- 7:43companies working with their employees.
- 7:46I would think it's a little boring to do the same task all
- 7:49the time, where you before you do all these versions, all these
- 7:53different types of tasks. So your day was very
- 7:55interesting. That's why I'm the general
- 7:57contractor, because I get to see all the different pieces, right?
- 7:59I could not be the guy who does one thing every single day,
- 8:02right? There's no way.
- 8:03So I just pound a nail in, that's all I do 11.
- 8:07I go to job site. I pound in one nail.
- 8:09You do? Yeah, I'm kidding.
- 8:12What? What tool do you use to pound
- 8:14that nail? Hammer you.
- 8:17Do know a couple things? Well, the name of this episode
- 8:20is Where's My Hammer? Yeah, you remember that story.
- 8:25Yeah, but we don't have to tell that specific story.
- 8:27You can embellish if you need to.
- 8:28Well, I don't want to embellish because it's pretty true.
- 8:32We'll get to that in a minute. So before we deep dive into the
- 8:35construction world, can we talk a little bit about the time you
- 8:38were on TV at one point in your life?
- 8:40Yeah, I did. I did my research.
- 8:42I did some YouTube viewing and it was, I originally thought it
- 8:45was HDTV. It's not.
- 8:46It's Destination America slash Discovery Channel.
- 8:49Oh yeah, it was HDTV. As well.
- 8:51Yeah, we did a little 6 little episode show called King of
- 8:54Thrones back in 2013. And weren't you one of the main
- 8:57contractors on that? Yeah, I might have been.
- 8:59You might have been. I might have been one of those
- 9:01guys. Mm hmm.
- 9:02So I, I, I think King of Thrones is pretty obvious what you did
- 9:04on that show. Yeah, yeah, there was a slogan.
- 9:09How did it go? Something about we're #1 when it
- 9:12comes to #2. Yeah, I saw a clip of that.
- 9:15I think I I saw that play. Yeah, there was a promotion that
- 9:18actually mailed us I think a magnet and on that magnet on my
- 9:21fridge said I'm number one at #2 or something like that.
- 9:24That's awesome. Can I get a copy of that magnet?
- 9:26It's around somewhere. I also got like a little King of
- 9:29Thrones toilet because this whole thing came about.
- 9:31Game of Thrones was a big deal then.
- 9:33Yeah. And they were trying to play off
- 9:35of that. That's why it was called King of
- 9:36Thrones. Gotcha.
- 9:37And how did they contact you to be the contractor in on TV?
- 9:42So they found us actually because I was working on a
- 9:45different TV show called Bath Crashers.
- 9:48You've. Been on a You've been on TV?
- 9:49I used. To watch bath crashers all the
- 9:51time with Matt Monster. Yeah.
- 9:53Yes. So I was a contractor on there,
- 9:56so you didn't see us a whole lot more in the background and we
- 10:00managed it and made it happen. But yeah.
- 10:01Matt Minster. Minster.
- 10:02Yes, yeah. Oh, that's funny.
- 10:04So that's how I got my start. And then they somehow somebody
- 10:07got my name through that and we got interviewed.
- 10:10Someone flew out from New York to interview Dave and I.
- 10:14So why aren't you on Rock the Block right now?
- 10:17Because those are for the designers, the head people.
- 10:20I wasn't the head guy. Not till King of Thrones that I
- 10:22get to be the head guy. I want to see you back on TV.
- 10:25He's got the face for it. Oh, definitely, definitely.
- 10:27You think so? Oh yeah.
- 10:28Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 10:29I only got one season and then that was it.
- 10:32So who's who's your son? Did it get canned?
- 10:34Very. Funny it did.
- 10:36My sidekick was Dave. So Dave was an employee of mine
- 10:40at the time. And when they came out to
- 10:42interview us, funny enough, they interviewed Dave and I, my wife,
- 10:47all the contractors. We worked with some friends
- 10:50trying to just gauge who they were gonna have on the show.
- 10:54Because at that time, I think the producer was someone who
- 10:56also came from the TV show called Tanked.
- 11:00OK. Didn't they make like fancy
- 11:02aquariums? Yeah, that sounds familiar.
- 11:04I think so they were trying to again similar idea but along the
- 11:09bathroom lines. That's awesome.
- 11:11Where did you where? Did you film in the Twin Cities
- 11:13here? We filmed in the Twin Cities.
- 11:15Yep, they found, you know, houses to work at.
- 11:18I had nothing to do with that. We would just show up and.
- 11:20Show up. OK, so you had no like to pick
- 11:22the people and what they wanted to do and all that.
- 11:23You had nothing with any of that.
- 11:24They want to do things unique and different.
- 11:27So like we did an outhouse once we did.
- 11:30Oh really? Yep, we did.
- 11:32Like a a wood bathroom or like a cabin bathroom We did.
- 11:35That's the one that I downloaded.
- 11:37Is it? It's on my computer.
- 11:38I watch it every day. Every day do.
- 11:40I put you to sleep at night. It helps me sleep.
- 11:43Identified you can purchase those still they're they're buck
- 11:4515 episodes, so for $9 we could have your entire series.
- 11:48No way. I don't I think it's worth.
- 11:49Play them back-to-back. I want to see them because 2013
- 11:53a few years ago, yeah, pretty sure I was a little bit heavier.
- 11:56Then you've lost some weight since then, yeah.
- 11:59Yes, you have not. Surprised by that.
- 12:00I'd love to show my kids. Oh yeah.
- 12:03I can send you the clip I got. Do that.
- 12:05Yeah, there's one with Dave and a body dryer.
- 12:07Haven't seen that one. That's no.
- 12:09OK, Dave and a body dryer. There's also urinal.
- 12:12You can play video games as you urinate.
- 12:14We did that one in the shop. There's some great stuff from
- 12:18that. So you either got urinate a long
- 12:20time to play the game or they're very short games.
- 12:23Yeah, I don't remember that, but.
- 12:25Sometimes I urinate pretty long, right?
- 12:27Right. So we're thinking about doing a
- 12:30little question answer session here, and wherever it goes, it's
- 12:34fine by us. OK with you.
- 12:35OK. I mean, yeah, you ask away.
- 12:37OK. But before we do that, let's
- 12:38hear a little a word from our sponsor, Spring Green Lawn Care.
- 12:46Hey, this is Rob. I wanted to take a moment to
- 12:48talk about Spring Green. I've been using them since 2007.
- 12:52They provide fertilizer, weed control, lawn insect control,
- 12:55and core aeration services for my lawn.
- 12:57They also spray for mosquitoes, which is huge in Minnesota and
- 13:00new later this year. Liquidations and home pest
- 13:03control. They're a locally owned and
- 13:05operated company. Super easy to get a hold of and
- 13:07work with. They'll give you the intention
- 13:09and service that you deserve. This is their website at
- 13:12springdashgreen.com. For a price quote specific to
- 13:14your property and to sign up for service.
- 13:16You can even register for autopay or prepaid to save a
- 13:18little bit of cash right there on the website or shoot them a
- 13:20message with any questions. That's spring. dashgreen.com,
- 13:24springdashgreen.com. All right, Jeff, here we go.
- 13:35First question. Let me hear it.
- 13:37Are there really ever any bad ideas in your line of work?
- 13:40Is that kind of like? Is there a dumb question?
- 13:44No questions are dumb. Questions are dumb.
- 13:45But I would argue that, well, my wife taught me that that there
- 13:48are some dumb questions in our line of work.
- 13:52Everything is really what the owner wants, right?
- 13:55I will try to maybe give my opinion, but it comes down to
- 13:58the way you live in your home. So bad idea, No.
- 14:02OK, OK, We can do anything you want.
- 14:04OK, do you ever do some ideas that people insist on and you
- 14:07just think you're kind of a moron?
- 14:10All the time. No, I shouldn't tell you.
- 14:11Yeah, we definitely do. Yeah, we will.
- 14:13Again, from my standpoint, it's a functionality and a longevity
- 14:18and a maintenance thing, right? Yeah.
- 14:20If you're going to have problems with those three, I'm going to
- 14:22try to persuade you against it. But if you take that
- 14:24responsibility, you live there. You want to deal with it, right?
- 14:27Fine. How about if it's structural?
- 14:29It's different structural. No, we have to warranty that per
- 14:33state mandate for 10 years and it's a little more severe.
- 14:37So no, if there's a question on structure, you involve an
- 14:40engineer. And then again, there's always a
- 14:43way to do it. And then they're talked out of
- 14:44it. They're talked out of it due to
- 14:46money, never because of anything else, right?
- 14:49It always comes down to money. OK, so what's the worst kind of
- 14:53construction job for you? One with low ceilings.
- 14:58I don't know if we mentioned this earlier, but just very
- 15:00tall. No, there's no bad construction
- 15:04job. Again to the point earlier of 1
- 15:07task day in and day out. I don't like it, never have.
- 15:10I love a variety so I would do anything and everything.
- 15:13Gotcha. I like the bigger ones.
- 15:15I mean they're more appealing right?
- 15:17They take longer. Sometimes the jobs that take two
- 15:19weeks are really hard. Crunch timetable?
- 15:22Sure. As soon as one thing goes wrong,
- 15:23everything blows up. Do you normally focus on larger
- 15:27like full home builds and remodels as opposed to like what
- 15:29you did for us, just like a addition?
- 15:31We have a good mix. Prior to the recession of O8O9,
- 15:35we did only new homes. And then since then, it's sort
- 15:38of been a good mix of everything, right?
- 15:40Smaller jobs fill a void. Yeah.
- 15:43You know, when you're building a house and some of these houses
- 15:44will take a year or two, it's nice to just go somewhere for a
- 15:48month or two and do a job getting it out, Right.
- 15:50Right. Some of it is just people, like
- 15:53I like to work for good people. Yeah.
- 15:56Where do you find all your contractors?
- 15:58Contractors have had for a long time, most of them.
- 16:01I mean, we have a core group we use.
- 16:02We don't really skew from that much.
- 16:05On occasion people will recommend someone, we'll try
- 16:07them. Or like, say I do a job for Joe
- 16:10down the street and he's like, hey, my buddy is a Carpenter,
- 16:13can we use him? We'll try him out.
- 16:15If it works really well, we might hire them again.
- 16:17But the most part, we've had the same guys for many, many years.
- 16:20That makes it a lot easier than you guys you know, trust and
- 16:22career can rely on. You can rely on them.
- 16:24You know how they work, you know how they operate.
- 16:26You know that hey, this call, I, this guy I have to call once a
- 16:29week to remind him to be here in July.
- 16:31This guy I don't have to remind at all.
- 16:33Like you understand how each other works.
- 16:35Right. Which helps speed things along
- 16:37once you actually start construction.
- 16:39Sure you ever found anything inside a wall?
- 16:42Oh yeah, all the time. Unexpected, I should say.
- 16:45Yeah, like what? Like what's what's the most
- 16:47outrageous thing you've? Nothing outrageous inside a
- 16:50wall. I mean, you find like, old
- 16:51cigarette packages or beer cans from when the house was maybe
- 16:55constructed originally, that the the time to throw things in
- 16:58there. Yeah.
- 16:59So like a lot of old lunch bags. OK, right.
- 17:01Because all contractors eat lunch out of their lunch box.
- 17:03So you'll find old Pepsi cans, right?
- 17:05Whatever. Right.
- 17:07Really. Walls.
- 17:07Oh yeah, no time capsules. No time capsules, never found
- 17:10one of those. We're actually doing a job right
- 17:13now. Rumor is there's one buried in
- 17:15the backyard. We haven't found it yet, so
- 17:18maybe tomorrow when the excavator is back, we will find
- 17:21it. That'd be fun.
- 17:22That would be cool. Didn't you tell me at coffee
- 17:24that you found a? Pool.
- 17:26We did find a pool, you're right.
- 17:28A few weeks ago we were doing a job in Wayzata looking to expand
- 17:33their basement. And then two feet outside the
- 17:35basement wall, the excavator was digging and lo and behold, there
- 17:38was a pool. You're right.
- 17:38I. Didn't forget about that and
- 17:39they didn't know about it, right?
- 17:41The homeowners had a night. There was new homeowners that
- 17:43purchased the house in the last 10 years and they had heard
- 17:46rumors from neighbors that at one time that house had a pool.
- 17:49OK, But everybody assumed it was just, you know, ripped up, torn
- 17:53away, hauled away. Nobody realized it was just two
- 17:56feet away, filled in, filled in with sand and then covered with
- 18:00grass. Wow.
- 18:02So these lucky homeowners got to spend 10 grand to remove it,
- 18:06right? How did it not like cave in or
- 18:08whatever over the years? I mean, my gosh.
- 18:10Well, they filled it with sand so it could that's true.
- 18:12And it's all, it was all concrete like it was custom
- 18:15built rebar concrete lined so and.
- 18:18They just didn't want it and just buried.
- 18:19It just buried it. Wow.
- 18:20Well. Pools are a lot of work.
- 18:22They're a ton of work. Reminds me of another house and
- 18:23Edina. We did.
- 18:24We tore a house down to build a new one.
- 18:26Well when we tore the house down we found what the owner was.
- 18:31The 11 man owner lived there for 50 some years.
- 18:34Turns out he'd walk out the back bedroom window and throw his
- 18:36garbage down the hill. No.
- 18:39Turns out he like built up the hill over 50 years and we found
- 18:44a giant pile of garbage. Oh wow.
- 18:47It's like personal little landfill landfill.
- 18:49Little landfill? That's awesome.
- 18:52So what's the weirdest reason someone has called you for a
- 18:55job? I don't can't think of anything
- 18:57that's been weird. I mean add this, add that it's
- 19:01all home. We do mainly residential work, a
- 19:03little bit of commercial. So I guess nothing is sticks
- 19:07out. That's strange.
- 19:08OK. I mean, it's all, where do I
- 19:10live, where do I cook, where do I go to the bathroom #1 and #2
- 19:13you know, like. Nobody's asking you where it's
- 19:15to build some weird shrine or secret room or something like
- 19:18that. No shrines?
- 19:20We do. Secret rooms?
- 19:21Sure. Tell us about the secret rooms.
- 19:23They're not all that exciting to know.
- 19:24Like usually it's like I'm going to hide my kids stuff behind
- 19:28this door and I'm going to make it look like a bookcase.
- 19:31And you open it up and it's a kids room.
- 19:32It's a kids room. We did one.
- 19:35It was a guy's office, so you won't know it's there now what
- 19:39he keep. The problem is, I don't know
- 19:40what he keeps in there after we're done, right?
- 19:42How about a safe room with reinforced walls?
- 19:46Yep, we've done safes. We had a guy who somehow
- 19:50acquired an old bank vault door. That's awesome.
- 19:54And so we turned it into his gun safe in the basement.
- 19:56It was like 10 by 10 room. And then we used that vault door
- 20:01for his entrance. It was all winding concrete, so
- 20:03he was worried about people. He had a big gun collection,
- 20:06right? So that was protected.
- 20:08That's definitely protected. No panic rooms, nothing crazy
- 20:12like that. I'm sure they're out there,
- 20:13right? Maybe not here in Minnesota.
- 20:16I'm sure there you see some houses around here, there's some
- 20:18crazy stuff going on. Do you have a collection of lost
- 20:22tools you're secretly hoarding? I have a collection of lost
- 20:24tools, sure. I wouldn't say I secretly
- 20:26hoarded them. I mean, if you want some, Brian,
- 20:28do you need some? Tools.
- 20:29I do. Some tools.
- 20:29I do need tools. I need a hammer.
- 20:32But I think you had told me you collect a lot of supplies,
- 20:36leftover supplies, and they all kind of hold up in your garage.
- 20:39Well, supplies different than tools, sure.
- 20:42I have a problem where I don't want to throw good things away
- 20:46and a lot of stuff we do there's so say like in my kitchen I have
- 20:50an A dishwasher and we took out of someone's home.
- 20:53It was 2 years old so new I would call it new enough or it
- 20:57works. So I took it and put it in my
- 20:58house right. It was better than the 1 I had
- 21:00right? I have doors, light fixtures,
- 21:02trim. I just retiled my whole shower
- 21:04with leftover tile. So you're saying when you get
- 21:07home from working all day on other job sites, you'd love to
- 21:09come home and fix your? House I don't I don't love it at
- 21:11all. This.
- 21:12How is that battle for you remodel going for you?
- 21:15It's never complete. I have stair balusters that have
- 21:20been missing for like 6 years. Didn't you once have just a 5
- 21:24gallon pill bucket in your kitchen just covering up some
- 21:28some wiring or something like that?
- 21:29Just stayed there for how many? Years.
- 21:31A wire poking on the floor. Probably a couple years.
- 21:35Didn't bother me any. Bothered your wife, my wife,
- 21:38maybe my kids. Got used to it.
- 21:39Yeah, I'm kind of the same way, though.
- 21:41When I get home from work, the last thing I want to do is deal
- 21:43with my yard. Oh totally.
- 21:45Like I deal with it all day, all day.
- 21:46Like I don't want to think about it.
- 21:48If you could have any superpower on a job site, what would that
- 21:50be? Oh, boy.
- 21:52To be invisible. Invisible.
- 21:54Yeah. That's one of my faves.
- 21:56I want to be invisible but. For many, many.
- 21:58Reasons. Let's let's explore some of
- 22:00those reasons. No, I can just creep in on what
- 22:03actually is going on because they always say right.
- 22:05I mean, Rob is you're the boss. Like when the boss is around,
- 22:08things are different. Things are different.
- 22:09They sure when you're not OK. I'd like to think more gets done
- 22:13when I'm there, but I actually wish it was the other way
- 22:16around. More got done when I wasn't
- 22:17there, right? So Speaking of that, what is the
- 22:20most creative excuse you've ever heard for a project delay?
- 22:22Oh, I've heard them all. My dog ate this, my wife did
- 22:26that. I was late to school, my car
- 22:28didn't start. You name it.
- 22:29Yeah, I got 1 today. What was it?
- 22:32I had to go get a tooth pulled. And that's why we had to have a
- 22:35delay. That's why there was a delay.
- 22:37This one guy had to get an emergency tooth pull.
- 22:40Like what makes it an emergency? Right.
- 22:43Like. You fell and broke your tooth.
- 22:45Like does that really? Happen.
- 22:47Yeah. Well, yeah, I mean it could, but
- 22:50it can with big old gap in the front, right?
- 22:53You get a lot of, oh, I'm sick. You get a lot of.
- 22:56Somebody in my family died. Yeah.
- 22:59I don't believe them. All right, right.
- 23:01Like. I mean, just in our experience,
- 23:03I mean, just for the past two months we've had, they scheduled
- 23:05this day and then they got called to another site or a
- 23:07couple guys couldn't come in for whatever reason, or it rained or
- 23:10Oh yeah, I mean rain. Weather is one thing being a
- 23:13general contractor, right? You're hiring subcontractors
- 23:15right now. Subcontractors work for probably
- 23:18anywhere from 12 to 24 contractors, right?
- 23:22So who screams the most that night or the next day might pull
- 23:26that subcontractor off your job to their job, right?
- 23:29Because you're all trying to hit a deadline, right?
- 23:31And that's all scheduling. Then then you have got to change
- 23:33your schedule because your contractor didn't show up for
- 23:36whatever reason. Yeah, there's a, there's a
- 23:38critical. Path to this.
- 23:39I mean at points when you start with excavation, you can't do
- 23:42concrete till the hole is dug. You can't frame until the
- 23:45concrete's done right? There's a linear path to some of
- 23:47that once you get a house framed up.
- 23:49Sure, you can throw plumbers, electricians, HVAC in at one
- 23:52time with some coordination because they have to be in the
- 23:54same room at the same time, right?
- 23:56Then again, after drywall, it's like you can throw a bunch of
- 23:59different guys in there in different rooms, different areas
- 24:01to work, but you can't all be together on top of each other,
- 24:05right? You're not doing drywall.
- 24:06And flooring at the same time, correct?
- 24:08There's just not enough space. Hey, I knew that.
- 24:12Did you watch? That like Home Extreme Makeover
- 24:14home show? Yeah, I did.
- 24:15Where they build a house in seven days.
- 24:16It's not true. It's not, I know, not much on.
- 24:19TV is true. No, just have you ever tried to
- 24:22explain construction terms to somebody that absolutely no
- 24:25knowledge of what you're talking about all the time.
- 24:27And how does that go? And we do it all the time and it
- 24:30can go good and bad. A lot of times you have to like
- 24:33be together on site, really show them, understand how it works.
- 24:37You have to dumb it down. You dumb it down someone like
- 24:39terms. You can't.
- 24:40Use, right? I mean, that's same with
- 24:41anybody's. I don't know what you even do
- 24:43and how you would explain it to me.
- 24:45I make things look pretty. It's dumb down there you go.
- 24:52Easy enough, yeah. What is the What is the funniest
- 24:56thing you've ever heard on a job site?
- 24:58Oh, I probably can't repeat that.
- 25:00Job sites can be pretty dirty. Oh yeah, like.
- 25:03Yeah, construction guys. I mean, it's endless of your
- 25:07Mama jokes, right? Really.
- 25:09Your sister this and your daddy that.
- 25:12Oh yeah, you got to take me to a job.
- 25:14Site you should come. It's so.
- 25:15Worth it if all construction. Tools suddenly developed
- 25:19personalities. Which tool would be the most
- 25:21dramatic? Huh.
- 25:24Of all the tools you use, which one would be?
- 25:26What kind of question is this? This is a crazy.
- 25:28Question No shit from a graphic designer because I don't know
- 25:33anything about construction. Tools don't have personalities
- 25:36or anything. I don't know how to answer that.
- 25:39All right. Well then we're just going.
- 25:40To move on, because now you've let me down.
- 25:42Read it one more time maybe. It'll come to me if.
- 25:45Not Why not? If all construction tools
- 25:49suddenly developed personalities, which tool would
- 25:53be the most dramatic? Well, the hammer for sure.
- 25:57Thank you. Is that?
- 25:58What you were looking for I'm. Looking for the.
- 26:00Hammer bring. The hammer.
- 26:02Bring the hammer. Where's my hammer?
- 26:04OK, so I I think we. Clearly need to explain the the
- 26:06words. Yeah.
- 26:07Where's my hammer? Yeah.
- 26:08Well, I mean, it's not you, Rob. It's not you, Brian.
- 26:14Where's my hammer? I learned this when I was young,
- 26:17early on, on a job site, an old timer.
- 26:20We were working together, building the house.
- 26:22I don't remember what town we were in.
- 26:23And he yells, Where's my hammer? And I looked around like.
- 26:27It's in your belt, man, like it's right next to you.
- 26:29You were young, right I. Was in my.
- 26:31Early 20s, probably maybe even my teens at that point.
- 26:34I don't remember. I'm like, hey, Bill, it's in
- 26:36your pouch. Like it's what do you mean?
- 26:38You're looking for your hammer? He's like, no, you dummy, come
- 26:41here. Turns out that's code for Hey,
- 26:44there's a hot chick walking by. You can't say hey, check out
- 26:48the. Hot chick, you got to go where's
- 26:50my hammer and everybody looks around and then everybody stops
- 26:53what they're doing they look up they take in the scenery right
- 26:56they take a quick you know, minute break sit down great so
- 27:00like you want that to happen every day Jeff, you told me this
- 27:03at. Coffee.
- 27:04And you had said where's my hammer when a pretty young lady
- 27:07walked in the door at the coffee shop and I'm like, what are you
- 27:09talking about? And so he explained it to me.
- 27:12And now, of course, do you. Have you ever?
- 27:14Used it since, well, no I. Think about it.
- 27:18But I've never. I think you should.
- 27:20You should. When you're there next.
- 27:21I'm going to Well, even when I'm not.
- 27:23I mean, this is a secret all men should have.
- 27:25Like maybe in a coffee shop. It's a little weird out for your
- 27:29hammer. Yeah, but maybe you could come
- 27:31up with another vernacular. Yeah, yeah, Alright.
- 27:34But on construction site, everybody carries a hammer, so
- 27:37it's right. It's perfect, I guess.
- 27:38Also saying where's my? Coffee would be a little odd
- 27:40when it's right in front of you. But maybe where's my Creamer?
- 27:43Boom, boom, coming later. Sorry, sorry.
- 27:53That was a great. That was great.
- 27:55Thank you. That was great.
- 27:58OK, so. What is your most epic Where's
- 28:00my Hammer moment? Oh.
- 28:04Well, there's been a lot of good ones.
- 28:05We did a job down in Edina, OK, and it was right across from the
- 28:10yoga studio. We didn't get a lot of work
- 28:13done. No, there's a lot of.
- 28:15Bottom pants going in and out. Yep, the other good one.
- 28:18Is not so much where's my hammer?
- 28:19But, like, when you're down there, you go take lunch around
- 28:22Lake Calhoun. Yeah.
- 28:24Check out the scenery. Yes.
- 28:25Yes. I don't think you call it Lake.
- 28:27Calhoun anymore I will. Always call it Lake Calhoun.
- 28:30Now it's some. You certainly can't call it
- 28:34that. You have a Devadu.
- 28:37Like Betty Makaska. Something something like that.
- 28:40They Yeah, something like that, yeah.
- 28:43And it's never the hole where's my hammer has never turned into
- 28:45some like dirty movie or anything.
- 28:46Do you ever play pranks on? Your staff or?
- 28:48Contractors. Not really.
- 28:51I mean, not on job sites, mainly because of safety, OK?
- 28:55Pranks. Well, one, I mean, if you do
- 28:58something and they scare the hell out of them, you don't need
- 28:59to be getting hurt because then in the end I get sued because I
- 29:02carry the insurance for everybody.
- 29:04They fall off the roof. Yeah, or hit themselves with a.
- 29:06Hammer or cut themselves, So no. In the office, sure, we do.
- 29:11A little bit, sure. Mess around with each other
- 29:13sure, but not on job sites only for that reason.
- 29:15Or like I've had to pull guys hands like where they nailed
- 29:18their hand to the wall. No.
- 29:21For real. For real.
- 29:22Yep, guys. Have nailed their hands to the
- 29:24wall with a nail gun right get in the way.
- 29:27Then you use your hammer and you pry it out.
- 29:30I've pulled pulled staples out of guys fingers.
- 29:32Yeah. Oh nice.
- 29:34Yeah. So, OK, then that leads me to
- 29:36the next question of emergency room visits for me.
- 29:41For you and then maybe. Your contractors I've never
- 29:44driven. Anyone into the emergency room?
- 29:46I have myself have not gone there because normally what I
- 29:48would do is just wrap up whatever I did and some toilet
- 29:53paper clicks. Put some duct tape around it.
- 29:55I got one on my leg from that. Duct tape.
- 29:58Duct tape. Pretty bad gouge.
- 30:00I've had guys kind of like cut their fingers with table saws
- 30:04and tips the fingers off. I never cut 1.
- 30:07Off but gouged it pretty bad. They would drive themselves to
- 30:10the hospital. Stuff from the eyes guys have
- 30:12fallen. I fell off a ladder like 2
- 30:15stories but I was fine. Rob fell off a ladder.
- 30:17I have off a ladder from one story and.
- 30:19Broke my fibula yeah that's sucks I'm.
- 30:21Older than you. Not by much, yeah.
- 30:24His bones are. Brittle.
- 30:25They are brittle. You need more.
- 30:27Cream in your coffee? Yeah, that's true.
- 30:29I was. Actually putting, I was actually
- 30:30putting. There you go.
- 30:31I was actually putting up about gutter guards, my old gutter
- 30:33guards. Yeah.
- 30:34So that's. I was very.
- 30:36Insistent that we replace them when we put new gutters on.
- 30:38Yeah, and you didn't have to. Do it.
- 30:40And I didn't have to do it because.
- 30:41Exactly. Yes.
- 30:41Learn my lesson. Yeah, Rob and.
- 30:43Ladders don't mix. Don't mix, no.
- 30:45No, no, no, I don't like them anymore.
- 30:47Either like I, you know, I do less of the physical activity
- 30:50these days or the physical work and I'm not nearly as good on
- 30:52the ladders I used to be. Yeah, yeah, I used to walk
- 30:55walls. Like no thing, I could be 3
- 30:56stories up and walk a wall and not care.
- 30:58What does that mean? Walk a wall.
- 31:00So like when you build. Your house right before the roof
- 31:03goes on, you have walls standing on the perimeter and they're
- 31:05only 3 1/2 or 5 1/2 inches wide, and you would just stand up
- 31:09there and walk from one end to the other?
- 31:11I would. Seriously.
- 31:12Fall off. I mean, first of all, Fred
- 31:14Heights, you talk about the previous one, catch you up
- 31:17there. And I would start.
- 31:18To shake and a tip over. Not good, not good.
- 31:22No no no. You fall to the inside.
- 31:24You're only falling 8 to 10 feet.
- 31:26It's not so bad outside, a little worse outside.
- 31:28Will be a lot worse plus your. Problem if you'd be up there.
- 31:30You. You would.
- 31:30I had a few drinks because you're afraid of heights
- 31:31already, so that wouldn't help with your dexterity.
- 31:33Yeah, all of it would be bad. That'll be bad.
- 31:36Yeah, drinking on the job site not.
- 31:37Good. No smoking pot on the job site.
- 31:39Not good. Good, not good.
- 31:41But. Drinking during a podcast is
- 31:43good. All day, every day.
- 31:44Welcome. Thank you.
- 31:45When can't you drink? Well other than on a job site?
- 31:49Or maybe in your car. Right.
- 31:51Drinking. And.
- 31:52Driving not. Not in Minnesota.
- 31:54No. No, not.
- 31:55Anywhere, Jeff. Can't you like Southern?
- 31:57States. Why is that so funny?
- 32:04I don't think you can, Jeff. OK, You could be a passenger.
- 32:06Drinking then? Maybe.
- 32:08Maybe, possibly. Yeah, I'm pretty sure and.
- 32:09And I love they don't have the drive through liquor stores.
- 32:11Yeah, right. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:12So I, I sorry to get off. I went to a drive.
- 32:14Through liquor store. Once you did in Iowa, did you?
- 32:17Yeah, It's pretty fun, actually. It's a great idea.
- 32:19Yeah, it is. They're all over South Dakota,
- 32:21too. Start one.
- 32:22Maybe it's just. The Minnesota thing.
- 32:23Where we have we didn't have any fun here.
- 32:25We have no gambling. Yeah, but now we can at least.
- 32:26Buy alcohol on Sunday. That was never a thing in the
- 32:29past. Don't have drive was.
- 32:30Wisconsin anymore. That's right, we can start a
- 32:32new. Business venture.
- 32:34I'm in drive through liquor store.
- 32:35There you go, make pizzas. In the back.
- 32:38Pizzas. Yeah, that's what we're going to
- 32:41do. I know little pizza joint, love
- 32:43it, love it. And let's get THC pizzas.
- 32:47Never had one, right? See, it's not out there yet.
- 32:50Be filthy rich. I'm an idea man you.
- 32:52Are as you are. More than just making it pretty.
- 32:56It's right, so we know that timelines are important, but
- 32:59what motivates your crew the most on long builds besides
- 33:03pizza? Donuts.
- 33:05Donuts in pizza? Well, Donuts go a long way.
- 33:08So does lunch if you buy them lunch.
- 33:11If. You buy them lunch.
- 33:12You'd be amazed. Like what that does for guys,
- 33:15really. They bring their same sandwich
- 33:17every day. They're Ritz crackers to
- 33:19whatever, right. You buy guys lunch, it changes
- 33:22their toll outlook. Nobody's bringing like leftovers
- 33:25and need a microwave to heat up. We bring microwaves everywhere.
- 33:28There's always a microwave on a job site.
- 33:29You really, you bring up, you hook up a microwave.
- 33:32Yeah. So like all work trailers, most
- 33:34work trailers have microwaves in them so guys can warm up their
- 33:36lunch. If we're in a house for a year
- 33:38or something, we'll have a microwave kind of set up
- 33:40somewhere in the living room that people warm up their stuff.
- 33:44Fridges. Homeowners will bring us stuff
- 33:46from time to time. We've had guys make us breakfast
- 33:48or do fish fries or grilled burgers for lunch.
- 33:51Oh, that's cool. Yeah, OK.
- 33:53So when when I get into when I get into getting a remodel done,
- 33:57I'll remember that goes a long. Way food, just a little bit of
- 34:00food, even Donuts. I mean it doesn't have to be
- 34:03every week. I mean it's usually not.
- 34:05But on the guys that are there for a long periods of time, I
- 34:07mean a lot of these guys like plumbers, they might be at your
- 34:11house for a day, maybe 2 days and they're gone.
- 34:14They they filter through one to the next.
- 34:16You don't need to bring them Donuts, no.
- 34:19But but if I do and then I'm in a bind.
- 34:23Or I forgot, they remember you. They Remember Me going.
- 34:26So like, then I can persuade him to come fix or do whatever I
- 34:30need done. That's right, Jeff the donut.
- 34:31Guy, right? That's nice of you, Jeff.
- 34:35Doesn't take much. Simple guys, right?
- 34:36We don't need much. You know, I got to say, dude.
- 34:39Just I going through the process and you think about this like a
- 34:41lot of stuff, you know, you being the general contractor, a
- 34:44lot of people do it on their own, like they general contract
- 34:46on their own and they run all the crews and all that.
- 34:48But and obviously when you hire, when I hire like somebody like
- 34:51you to do this, obviously there's a fee I'm paying you to
- 34:54do your job, correct. To me, 100% worth it because you
- 34:58see a lot of things I don't see you're the whole the whole
- 35:02schedule thing. The whole schedule thing you do
- 35:03just still blows me away as how congested that thing is.
- 35:07It's every. Day it's an adjustment because
- 35:10one thing gets off, it throws everybody else off, so you're
- 35:13constantly moving and adjusting. You try to build in some fluff
- 35:16days, but you don't know and you need those.
- 35:19And you just right. Yeah, it's it's a lot of work.
- 35:22But you're right, we do it every day, right?
- 35:24So we catch the little things. The little things are usually
- 35:26what can throw something off. People have done this.
- 35:29Themselves and they call us halfway through going Oh my God,
- 35:32I'm over my head, please save me, please save me.
- 35:34Some help me? Yep, I'm not getting rich on
- 35:36this right. I'm not living in now.
- 35:39You've ruined my whole. Thought here I want to get
- 35:42instruction. Pizza.
- 35:43That's what you're. Going to get into THD pizza,
- 35:45yeah? Construction, right?
- 35:46Yeah, THD pizza. I love my job because it's.
- 35:49A variety. I meet different people every
- 35:51day. I go to different places every
- 35:52day I build something new. I create, right?
- 35:54That's what I love Yeah. It doesn't make me a ton of
- 35:57money, right. I mean, so you're an Rob you.
- 36:00Want to give me an? Extra 30 grand?
- 36:02No, not so much. Yeah.
- 36:03So you're an artist? You're an artist like me.
- 36:05I am an artist. You just deal with 3D, yeah,
- 36:10don't you? At all.
- 36:10You're all 2D. I'm 2D, yeah.
- 36:12I'm 3D, yes. You are.
- 36:15I got another question here for you.
- 36:17How often does it happen that your measurements are a little
- 36:19bit off resulting in a tear down?
- 36:22Does that happen often? What do you mean tear down well?
- 36:25OK, so you're. Off by half an inch in a room,
- 36:27the walls don't line up. What do you do?
- 36:30Shim it. You Shim it.
- 36:32Or you could. Some people will say.
- 36:33I'll use a Dutchman. It's a little trick of the
- 36:35trade. What's a Dutchman?
- 36:37Well. It's a little Shim.
- 36:39It's. Basically a Shim.
- 36:40Different term for a Shim. OK, there's always ways no house
- 36:44is perfectly flat, plum or level correct everything.
- 36:48If you look down a wall floor, there are imperfections
- 36:51everywhere, right? This is not a car being made in
- 36:52a factory. Everything has little
- 36:55imperfections. We try to minimize those, we try
- 36:58to hide them. Part of that is just lighting
- 37:02and then textures and finishes all make a difference.
- 37:05But so when I was putting. In my wall molding in my family
- 37:09room, I measured the walls from the floor to ceiling each side
- 37:13of the room so the outside wall to the interior.
- 37:15It was 1/2 inch off. Yep, totally.
- 37:17Normal and nobody would know that unless you're doing it so
- 37:20the disrobement nuts because like we.
- 37:21Need to have the molding exactly perfect, which of course you
- 37:25want. You want it to look nice and
- 37:27there are ways to get. That by adjusting your cutting
- 37:30like you they say what measure twice, cut once.
- 37:34I always measure. Once cut 3 times.
- 37:38Sorry I'm always speaking it wrong.
- 37:40Call me next time. Even the lumber.
- 37:44You buy. Isn't the same width really like
- 37:47a 2? By 4 can.
- 37:48Be anywhere from 3:00 and 2:45 and 3/4 inch thick.
- 37:52That is really throwing. Me off here, How am I supposed
- 37:54to know what I'm buying? Well, you need to.
- 37:57Buy lumber 1st and then occasionally by.
- 37:59Lumber, There's ways to fudge. It all shimming it pulling this
- 38:04and that. I heard it's called a Dutchman.
- 38:06There's a. Dutchman, it's one of my
- 38:10favorites. It doesn't really fly though,
- 38:12most you can't really use it very often.
- 38:15OK, you try to exceed and again, if you measure twice, cut once.
- 38:19You don't need to use the Dutchman.
- 38:20So I maybe I should get into that.
- 38:23You should so. Rob hired me for his home
- 38:25projects. Yes, he did, which is great.
- 38:27And great. To work with Rob.
- 38:28But what about you? Why don't you hire me?
- 38:30I want to. Hire you, But alas, I do my
- 38:34projects myself, that's why I cut 3 times.
- 38:38Because you're also an artist. Because I'm an artist.
- 38:41I was over giving you. Some opinions once.
- 38:43Yeah, we've not moved. One inch on that opinion yet
- 38:47didn't you have a wall tore out? When I was there, Oh yeah, I
- 38:49tore it out. And what does it look like now?
- 38:51It's beautiful. Is it still like a hole in the
- 38:53wall? Nope.
- 38:54I did all you. You muttered it and climb mud it
- 38:56and taped it, and I scraped. My ceilings and you can't tell.
- 38:59And then I spend hours and hours, days, weeks, months
- 39:04redoing the ceiling over and over.
- 39:06But now it's perfect. Yep, until now.
- 39:08The door swung open and knocked another hole in the wall.
- 39:11Son of a bitch. Exactly.
- 39:15And no, before you ask, we haven't put the flooring down
- 39:17yet because we can't decide on the color who do.
- 39:21You want some hand me downs I they won't match the floor I
- 39:24already. Have so then no my wife.
- 39:27Calls my things, I bring home the hoxie, hand me downs.
- 39:30Foxy hand me downs like I once even.
- 39:32Brought her home a bidet. Did you install the?
- 39:35Bidet. It's 100% installed.
- 39:37In our master bathroom and. It's fantastic once.
- 39:42You try it, you never go back. Matt.
- 39:44You know, Matt Minster got me on those.
- 39:46He did. He was the one that mentioned it
- 39:48many years ago. And yeah, once you have one, OK,
- 39:51kind of. Intrigued now?
- 39:52So maybe you got to do your bathroom.
- 39:53I can't figure out. I mean, obviously I haven't used
- 39:56one, but I just don't know what is.
- 39:58I don't know, you just got to play around with it.
- 40:00Brian, OK, I'll. Be sure to next time I get next
- 40:05time I get one, I'll bring it. Over to you.
- 40:06I think Brian has a problem with.
- 40:07Water shooting in places he's not comfortable with.
- 40:14All right, so I have one last question for you.
- 40:16What is the one piece of advice you'd give someone wanting to
- 40:19get into construction? One like as an.
- 40:21Occupation. Yes, I'm talking to all the.
- 40:24Younger people out there, it's an amazing job.
- 40:26You can make a ton of money. Come on, come work for me.
- 40:28How about that? Oh, I like.
- 40:30That our industry is. Aging, aging quickly.
- 40:33Everybody's 50 plus. We need young people.
- 40:36Definitely. The beauty of our industry is
- 40:40you work your 8 hour day and you go home and you forget about it.
- 40:42Now as the owner, you don't because people call you in the
- 40:44evening. But if you're working
- 40:46construction work 8 hours, go home, do your thing, come back.
- 40:50Is it really it just? You cut off at 8.
- 40:51I just for in my head I kept thinking that they work all the
- 40:54time. It depends on the.
- 40:56Occupation and the trade. Some guys will work longer in
- 40:59the summer because they're not working winters, but for the
- 41:01most part, guys are 8. Maybe you're 9.
- 41:04It's more flexible maybe than it used to be because we're looking
- 41:08for more people to get into the trades.
- 41:10Sure. So, because here's your plug.
- 41:12For the trades, that was my plug, OK.
- 41:14I got it, I mean. I just think as a society.
- 41:16We spent so much time focusing on college education that the
- 41:18trades got put to the wayside and, and honestly, that's where
- 41:22it's at now is the trades. I mean, you could, you can make
- 41:24bank. You can, I mean.
- 41:26We will pay carpenters over 100 grand a year right?
- 41:29They work 8 hour days, 40 hours a week.
- 41:30Yep, no overtime. You can get overtime if you want
- 41:32it, but you can make good money. You gotta be physical right?
- 41:35You're not sitting at a desk you had.
- 41:36Me there at 100,000 until you said I had to be physical.
- 41:39Well, you can stand on. Your feet for 8 hours, Can't
- 41:41you? God no.
- 41:44Come on, I can stand on my feet for like 15 minutes, then I got
- 41:47to sit down. Yeah.
- 41:48I mean, when you're 20, you probably.
- 41:49Could When you're 20, you're. Dancing through the aisle.
- 41:52Right, but at pushing 60, it's a.
- 41:53Different story, isn't there? Don't.
- 41:54Hey, how? How do you No, How do you?
- 41:58How do you sit? Inside all day and not be
- 42:00outside where it's beautiful. I mean, that's the beauty of our
- 42:02job is we're outside and sometimes we're working on the
- 42:04lake. You take your lunch break on a
- 42:05dock. Yeah.
- 42:06Soaking in the sun like it's fantastic.
- 42:09I'm a cave dweller. I live in a cave, I work in a
- 42:12cave. I never leave my cave.
- 42:16You have a good complexion. Though you have a little bit of
- 42:18sun going on. Thanks, Jeff.
- 42:21It's all those weekends at the cabin.
- 42:24Yeah, that's what it is, yeah. So that's all we got for
- 42:26questions. For you.
- 42:27Did you have fun? I had a great time.
- 42:28Yeah, me too. Good.
- 42:30Painless. Painless.
- 42:32I mean, I didn't know why you guys want to come up with.
- 42:34Well, hopefully wasn't. Too bad, yeah, but if you had as
