- 0:00Well, mothers, and some of you, I get that Mother's
- 0:06Day sometimes comes with some baggage. I'm always
- 0:11talking about my parents. I understand that many
- 0:16have a lot of woundedness coming from childhood.
- 0:20And Mother's Day can be complicated. And I've
- 0:23always been very thankful for the parents that
- 0:26I've been given because I had such a wonderful
- 0:28childhood. And I wish that every child, sometimes
- 0:33I'm in the stores and I hear parents just yelling
- 0:37at their kids. And I just want to take the kids
- 0:40under my wing and comfort them. And so I understand
- 0:44today that Mother's Day can be difficult, not
- 0:48just for you as a son or a daughter, but moms.
- 0:52Some of you here, you've walked through difficult
- 0:55times with your kids. Some of you have always
- 1:00wanted kids and never had the opportunity. When
- 1:03we celebrate Mother's Day, I always say that
- 1:08today, moms, all of you women, Whether you've
- 1:12had a biological child or not, you are welcome
- 1:15under the tent. I am a big believer in spiritual
- 1:18mothering. I'm a big believer that you don't
- 1:22have to give birth in a biological manner to
- 1:26be a mother. that I know many of you have poured
- 1:29out into other sons and daughters. And so please
- 1:32make sure all of you make your way to the tent.
- 1:35We want to celebrate you this morning. My hope
- 1:39and my prayer today is that, ladies, you would
- 1:41feel inspired, you would feel full of hope and
- 1:45courage as you leave here today. And so with
- 1:48that in mind... I'll be honest, Nick, who worked
- 1:52so hard, and how many of you appreciated Nick's
- 1:55countdown? I had to be sure to come in and watch
- 1:58his countdown. Honestly, I was a bit hesitant
- 2:02in the previous weeks to declare my sermon title
- 2:06becoming a Proverbs 31 woman, because if all
- 2:10of the people in here were just women, many of
- 2:15the women would have a little bit of an issue
- 2:17and baggage with Proverbs 31. For many women,
- 2:21it is been a source of feeling like they've never
- 2:24measured up, of failure, of trying to attain
- 2:28something that feels unattainable. And so I was
- 2:31hesitant to even put that up there. But this
- 2:34is the Word of God. And I want us today, as we
- 2:38look at this passage, I want us to look at it.
- 2:42It's not just, oh, another Mother's Day Proverbs
- 2:4431 message. No, we're going to look at a correct
- 2:48interpretation of Proverbs 31. How many of you
- 2:52would like a correct interpretation of Proverbs
- 2:5731 and what that means for us, right? And so
- 3:01today in this whole passage, our highlights,
- 3:05our verse that we really want to look at is going
- 3:09to be at the end in verse 30 that says, a woman
- 3:12who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. She
- 3:18shall be praised. What has happened with Proverbs
- 3:2331 is that we've gotten sidetracked by everything
- 3:27that this woman has done, and we miss really
- 3:31the whole point. And so today I want us to get
- 3:36this whole point. So we're going to take a little
- 3:38bit of a journey through Proverbs 31. We're going
- 3:42to discover a few attractions on the way. And
- 3:45so we're going to start in first gear. Now how
- 3:47many of you have driven a stick shift before?
- 3:51Mom was having to re -familiarize herself with
- 3:55it on the drive over because that is the Mustang.
- 3:58My first car was a stick shift, and I'm forever
- 4:01thankful that that was my first car so that I
- 4:04could learn how to drive in that way. So today
- 4:06we're going to just shift our way through this
- 4:08sermon. And so here in first gear, I want us
- 4:12to look at a couple of interesting facts about
- 4:15Proverbs 31. And in Proverbs 31, This is a passage
- 4:21that is not just a list of who this woman was.
- 4:28This is actually a poem. Proverbs 31 is a poem.
- 4:34And each line begins with a letter of the Hebrew
- 4:40alphabet. And so what is happening throughout
- 4:45this passage is that every time we have another
- 4:47letter and another letter, it's a poem. And it's
- 4:53a poem, and how many of you ever said a phrase
- 4:56like, when we're talking about I'm going to totally
- 4:58cover a topic from A to Z, we say that, right?
- 5:03Meaning that we're going to cover a topic in
- 5:06its entirety. Our takeaway from this poem is
- 5:12in the same sense. Every Hebrew letter is the
- 5:17beginning line. And so from A to Z, they are
- 5:20covering what this woman consists of. And so,
- 5:25first of all, it isn't just this list of everything
- 5:29this woman is capable of. It is a poem that is
- 5:35more than that. the telling of the fruit of what
- 5:40we're going to discover is the real driving factor
- 5:44of what drives this woman. And so we're going
- 5:48to take a broad look at this woman, and I'm going
- 5:52to be reading today out of New King James. And
- 5:55I want us just to begin by reading through the
- 5:58passage, and then we're going to dive into it.
- 6:00So starting in verse 10, who can find a virtuous
- 6:04wife? I want to take note there that a lot of
- 6:08passages will say noble. Who can find a noble
- 6:11wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The
- 6:16heart of her husband safely trusts her, so he
- 6:20will have no lack of gain. She does him good
- 6:24and not evil all the days of her life. She seeks
- 6:28wool and flax and willingly works with her hands.
- 6:32She is like the merchant ships. She brings her
- 6:35food from afar. She also rises while it is yet
- 6:40night and provides food for her household and
- 6:44a portion for her maidservants. She considers
- 6:47a field and buys it. From her profits, she plants
- 6:52a vineyard. She girds herself with strength and
- 6:56strengthens her arms. She perceives that her
- 7:00merchandise is good. and her lamp does not go
- 7:04out by night. She stretches out her hands to
- 7:08the distaff, and her hand holds the spindle.
- 7:11She extends her hand to the poor. Yes, she reaches
- 7:16out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid
- 7:19of snow for her household, for all her household
- 7:23is clothed with scarlet. She makes tapestry for
- 7:27herself. Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
- 7:32Her husband is known in the gates when he sits
- 7:35among the elders of the land. She makes linen
- 7:38garments and sells them and supplies sashes for
- 7:42the merchants. Strength and honor are her clothing.
- 7:46She shall rejoice in time to come. She opens
- 7:51her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the
- 7:55law of kindness. She watches over the ways of
- 7:59her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
- 8:04Her children rise up and call her blessed, her
- 8:07husband also, and he praises her. Many daughters
- 8:10have done well, but you excel them all. Charm
- 8:15is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman
- 8:19who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give
- 8:22her the fruit of her hands and let her own works
- 8:26Praise her in the gates. Do you know that Hebrew
- 8:30men memorize this? And at Shabbat, they will
- 8:36quote it to the wife, to the mother. So men,
- 8:41get busy. Maybe you could write an updated version
- 8:48to say to your wife. Darren, are you going to
- 8:52do that? For the next men's breakfast, you can
- 8:55all work on memorizing it together. Listen, we're
- 9:01going to be looking, taking a bit of a broad
- 9:03look at this woman. I'm not wanting to get into
- 9:05the weeds of everything that she does. The truth
- 9:08is, is that this is a woman of ancient times,
- 9:11and her context is that Of her household. And
- 9:16the household was not just your typical household.
- 9:19But that was the means of provision. Agriculture.
- 9:23Merchandise. This was a woman that was a business
- 9:26woman. She looked after her household. But she
- 9:29was a business woman. She strengthened her arms.
- 9:34She was a wise woman. And for centuries. This
- 9:40passage has been used to confine women to look
- 9:44a certain way and to be a certain way. This is
- 9:48the context for this woman. What is your context
- 9:52today? Many of our moms, I think we have very
- 9:56few, we have just a couple of maybe stay -at
- 9:59-home moms. For the most part, our households
- 10:02today, though, are dual working. There's not
- 10:07a stay -at -home parent for the most part. And
- 10:10so our context today for what a woman is doing
- 10:14is very different from the context of this ancient
- 10:17Hebrew woman. And so this passage isn't necessarily
- 10:21about what she's giving herself to. So if you're
- 10:27saying, well, I can't do all of that, that's
- 10:29okay. You don't have to do all of that. You don't
- 10:33have to go out and buy a spindle and start weaving
- 10:35clothes for your family, unless you want to,
- 10:39and then have at it. But for so long, women have
- 10:45felt like it's confined them in their home, it's
- 10:48confined their voice. And the truth is, is that
- 10:52our homes don't look like this anymore. They're
- 10:55not centers for agriculture and trade. It looks
- 11:00different today. And so today what I want to
- 11:04do is to, first of all, as we shift into second
- 11:07gear, I want us to redeem the Proverbs 31 woman.
- 11:12I want to redeem her name because if truth be
- 11:16told, many of us hear Proverbs 31 woman and go,
- 11:19I'm just being honest of what I hear women when
- 11:24they come to me. This is the first verse in verse
- 11:3110. Who can find a virtuous wife? Who can find
- 11:36a noble wife? Do you know what this word noble
- 11:43really means? What this word virtuous really
- 11:47means? It's not this meek picture that we get
- 11:54in our head. The truth is that whether your version
- 11:58is reading virtuous, excellent, or noble, they
- 12:02all mean the same thing. They mean capable. They
- 12:06mean brave. They mean power. It means victory.
- 12:11It means a valiant soldier. It is specifically
- 12:15referring to military strength. That is what
- 12:20noble means. That, I would say, is not a meek
- 12:26woman. This is a woman of strength, of power.
- 12:31In fact, in a couple of other places in this
- 12:34passage, we see the same military connotations.
- 12:37In verse 11, where it says that the husband lacks
- 12:41nothing of value, that value that is referring
- 12:45to is that of spoils. The spoils of warfare are
- 12:51what the man has because of the woman and her
- 12:55valiant strength and power. In verse 15, when
- 13:00it says that she's providing food, it is talking
- 13:03about food of prey. That word prey is in there.
- 13:08That is that hunter. I know we got some women
- 13:10in here that hunt. How many of you have taken
- 13:13down some animals in here? Ladies? Yeah, Kristen
- 13:17back there. I see your hand. Fish? Hey. I've
- 13:24caught myself a fish. I don't know if it's in
- 13:26the same manner of shooting a gun. It is? That's
- 13:31only because you haven't hunted. You're saying,
- 13:33yes, it is. Somebody take him out to hunt. He's
- 13:37got to learn how to hunt so he can go on a loan
- 13:40and win us $100 ,000. $500 ,000? Somebody take
- 13:46that man out. Teach him how to hunt. Because
- 13:49I've told him, don't come back until you have
- 13:51the money. Verse 17 talks about girding herself
- 13:59with strength. Do you know what girding is? Girding
- 14:03is when a soldier, because you know they used
- 14:05to wear longer clothing, and they would take
- 14:08it and tie up their outfit and gird it so they
- 14:13would have freedom of movement to fight. And
- 14:18here we see this woman girding herself as a soldier
- 14:22girds himself for movement in battle. All throughout
- 14:30this passage, what we see is a woman of strength,
- 14:36of power, that is fighting for her household,
- 14:41that is fighting for her family. And can I say,
- 14:46ladies, that we have an enemy, that he is after
- 14:50your family. He is after to steal, kill, and
- 14:54destroy your family. He's after your marriage.
- 14:57He wants to steal, kill, and destroy your marriage.
- 15:00And he will not play fair. It requires a woman
- 15:05of strength. It requires a noble woman of military
- 15:09might and power to say, no, not here. No, not
- 15:13here. Not here. I draw a line in the sand, so
- 15:17to speak. A woman of military strength, power,
- 15:23victory, and bravery. I've sat across so many
- 15:29women that would never even consider themselves
- 15:32in that manner. And left in ourselves, maybe
- 15:37not. But what did we learn last week? What is
- 15:42in the sanctuary of his presence? Strength and
- 15:46bravery, right? Strength and bravery. And so
- 15:54what we're looking at today is a heroic poem.
- 15:59What do we see all throughout? In fact, Darren
- 16:02just read it out of... Moses. Miriam was singing.
- 16:05It was a song of heroism of what God had done.
- 16:11And so many times in battles of Israel, when
- 16:15there was victory, what did they do? They began
- 16:17to write poems and write songs of the great victory.
- 16:21And so this is a poem. It is a heroic poem of
- 16:27victory and might of women. It is a heroic poem
- 16:31of how God regards the work of women. This is
- 16:37the inspired word of God. This is how he views
- 16:41women. Strength and power and bravery and might.
- 16:49Some of us need to view ourselves the way God
- 16:54has intended. And so more than portraying here
- 17:00a to -do list for women, and you know me, I love
- 17:04a good to -do list. Darren loves it when I give
- 17:08him to -do lists. Usually he says, I love you.
- 17:17I know when he says that, I'm like, mm -hmm.
- 17:20More than portraying a to -do list of women.
- 17:26This passage is revealing wisdom in action. Wisdom
- 17:32in action. If we are just trying to copy this
- 17:37woman's to -do list, most of us would never measure
- 17:41up. You may be a great Martha Stewart, but to
- 17:45be honest, Martha Stewart's got a great team
- 17:47of people. But she pays a lot of money. Most
- 17:52of us cannot measure up. to the to -do list of
- 17:56the Proverbs 31 woman. What we need to get today
- 18:04is the spirit and the motivation that drives
- 18:09this woman. What drives you? There's a couple
- 18:17of women in the Old Testament I was thinking
- 18:19of that are like -mannered to the Proverbs 31
- 18:22woman in this way. One is Ruth. In fact, the
- 18:26word for noble woman in Proverbs 31 is used one
- 18:31other time with a woman, and it was Ruth. And
- 18:34you remember the story of Ruth, right? That she
- 18:37married Naomi's sons. They died. And Naomi's
- 18:42moving back home. And Ruth says, your people
- 18:45are my people. I'm going to go where you go.
- 18:47And she ends up gleaning in the field because
- 18:50of their poverty, gleaning in the field to provide
- 18:54for them. And because of how she treats her mother
- 18:58-in -law, Boaz, the owner, he says to her, when
- 19:03we find out that they are related, so he's the
- 19:06kinsman redeemer, he can marry Ruth. And so when
- 19:10Ruth approaches, his response to her is this.
- 19:14My daughter, don't be afraid. I will do what
- 19:17you ask. I will be your kinsman redeemer. All
- 19:21the people of my town know that you are a woman
- 19:24of noble character. Ruth carried the same spirit
- 19:30of the Proverbs 31 woman. Listen, it was hard
- 19:34work gleaning. This is a woman of strength, of
- 19:38bravery. It could be dangerous work. In fact,
- 19:41Boaz had extended his covering, his protection
- 19:46over Ruth in the fields and said, make sure no
- 19:49harm comes to her. It could be a dangerous work.
- 19:54But Ruth carried a noble character. She rose
- 19:58up with that brave and courageous spirit to take
- 20:01care of her mother -in -law. I think of Deborah,
- 20:06a prophetess that rose to become a judge of Israel,
- 20:10the only woman judge that we read about in Israel.
- 20:15She would sit under a palm tree, and all of Israel
- 20:19would come to her for judgment. And when it came
- 20:23time, because for 20 years they had been oppressed
- 20:26by a wicked king, and when it came time to go
- 20:29to battle, she told the head of the army, hey,
- 20:33God says it's time to go and fight. And he's
- 20:36like, yeah, I'm not. I'm not going, Deborah,
- 20:39unless you go with me. And so Deborah had to
- 20:43go with him as he led them in victory. And then
- 20:47interestingly, in that account, it was another
- 20:50woman jail that... dealt the final death blow
- 20:53to the wicked king. Deborah carried the same
- 20:58spirit of the Proverbs 31 woman. She was a woman
- 21:02of courage, of valor, power, bravery, to fight
- 21:09the battle of Israel, the enemy of Israel. And
- 21:14no less can we do for our families, for our households.
- 21:21As we move into third gear here today, I want
- 21:25us, because here's why interpretation is so important
- 21:28of the Bible. You can't just take a verse and
- 21:30be like, oh, that's cool, and I want it to look
- 21:32like this and believe this. So I think that's
- 21:35what I'll believe about that verse. No, we got
- 21:37to look at it in light of other things, right?
- 21:39And one of that, those things is the... book
- 21:42that you find it in. And so when we look at the
- 21:44book of Proverbs overall, we see a couple of
- 21:48interesting things. And one is that you cannot
- 21:51read Proverbs 31 and not see the parallelism,
- 21:55the correlation to Lady Wisdom of Proverbs chapter
- 22:028. And so for a few moments here in third gear,
- 22:07I want us to look at the Proverbs 31 woman and
- 22:11how she correlates with the Proverbs 8 woman.
- 22:15Because I think it's going to help us in understanding
- 22:19what drives and motivates us and what we're doing.
- 22:24I'm going to read just a few verses of Proverbs
- 22:278, and then we're just going to do a comparison.
- 22:30But it's talking about Lady Wisdom and who Lady
- 22:34Wisdom is. She was not a god or goddess at all,
- 22:39but she was there at the beginning of creation.
- 22:42It says, the Lord brought me forth as the first
- 22:45of his works before his deeds of old. I was formed
- 22:49long ago at the very beginning when the world
- 22:52came to be. I was constantly at his side. I was
- 22:57filled with delight day after day, rejoicing
- 23:00always in his presence, in his whole world, and
- 23:03delighting in mankind. Now then, my children,
- 23:06listen to me. Blessed are those who keep my ways
- 23:11the ways of wisdom. Listen to my instruction
- 23:17and be wise. Do not disregard it. Blessed are
- 23:24those who listen to me, watching daily at my
- 23:27doors, waiting at my doorway. For those who find
- 23:31me find life and receive favor from the Lord.
- 23:35But those who fail to find me harm themselves.
- 23:39All who hate me love death. This is Lady Wisdom
- 23:43of Proverbs 8. That's a portion of her description.
- 23:49So she was there at the very beginning of the
- 23:52creation. Now, I'm going to quickly, we're not
- 23:55going to read the chapter for the sake of time,
- 23:57but here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to
- 24:00give you a list of traits that we see both in
- 24:03Lady Wisdom and in our noble woman of Proverbs
- 24:0731. She fears the Lord. In Proverbs 8, fears
- 24:13the Lord, hating evil, pride, and arrogance.
- 24:1731 is described as a woman who fears the Lord.
- 24:21The trait of instruction and wisdom. Lady Wisdom
- 24:25speaks what is noble, true, and right, and the
- 24:28valiant woman of Proverbs 31 opens her mouth
- 24:32with wisdom. To be treasured over jewels. Lady
- 24:40Wisdom is incomparably superior to jewels, and
- 24:43our noble woman is more precious than jewels,
- 24:47given her rarity. The trait receives honor and
- 24:52praise. Lady Wisdom possesses honor and our noble
- 24:57woman is praised for her surpassing works. Possesses
- 25:02strength. Lady Wisdom has strength and insight.
- 25:07The noble woman clothes herself with strength.
- 25:11Is industrious and active. Lady Wisdom is described
- 25:17as a master workman. Our noble woman diligently
- 25:22provides for others. Influences for the sake
- 25:27of others. Proverbs 8, by her kings reign justly.
- 25:33Noble woman cares for others and meets the needs
- 25:37of the poor. And finally, enriches those who
- 25:41find her. Lady Wisdom is accompanied by riches
- 25:45and brings a blessing and favor. Our noble woman
- 25:49does good all her days, ensures no lack of gain
- 25:53and brings honor. Do you see how similar Lady
- 25:57Wisdom and the Proverbs 31 woman are? There's
- 26:03a correlation between the two. And it is important
- 26:05that we get this. Because the truth is that Lady
- 26:09Wisdom represents the entirety of creation. She
- 26:14is a principle that undergirds entire creation.
- 26:19She's a pillar that upholds it all. She was there
- 26:24at creation as a companion to the creator. I
- 26:28mean, just think about that for a while. To be
- 26:32at the very beginning of creation, this wisdom
- 26:35of the ancient of days. And then we have the
- 26:42Proverbs 31 woman. And she doesn't represent
- 26:45all of creation. But she represents her work.
- 26:51She represents her limited local context. She
- 26:56represents her local community. And her portrayal
- 27:02is very descriptive of a woman's ordinary life.
- 27:10Like Lady Wisdom, she seems perfect, doesn't
- 27:13she? The perfect woman, the high standard. And
- 27:21so it's no wonder that so many women feel exhausted
- 27:24when they're told they have to be like her. Here's
- 27:35what it sums up. As the worthy woman of Proverbs
- 27:4131 nobly is living out her ordinary life, taking
- 27:46kids to soccer, cooking meal after meal after
- 27:51meal after meal after meal after meal after meal
- 27:53after meal. Laundry after laundry after laundry
- 27:57after laundry after laundry. You can fill in
- 28:00the blank of your ordinary day. The beautiful
- 28:05thing of this is that she mirrors the deep and
- 28:10ancient wisdom that was there from the beginning
- 28:15of time. You're not just an ordinary woman doing
- 28:21the ordinary, ordinary, ordinary, ordinary. You're
- 28:26a woman that is mirroring the ancient wisdom.
- 28:33The very foundation, your roots, your life is
- 28:38rooted in the creation narrative. The wisdom
- 28:47that you are invited into is rooted at creation.
- 28:53And your ordinary life is just really not that
- 28:58ordinary. It's rooted in the wisdom. Of creation.
- 29:06That should elevate your ordinary. That should
- 29:10change how you do the ordinary. And I would like
- 29:13to say I always feel victorious. And I feel the
- 29:17power of the ancient one in my laundry. My family
- 29:20would tell you that I probably don't. But to
- 29:25know as I'm growing in the fullness of God. That
- 29:31I am mirroring this ancient wisdom, lady wisdom.
- 29:37That's what Proverbs 31 is about. It's not about
- 29:42her to -do list. It's the fact that she mirrors
- 29:45lady wisdom. Unfortunately, Proverbs 31 has functioned
- 29:53as a law, as a list of demands and to -dos. And
- 30:00completely, it's wanted to put women into a particular
- 30:04mold. That if you are a godly woman, this is
- 30:08what it has to look like. And then we wonder
- 30:12why women are resistant. I don't want to be put
- 30:14in a mold. Instead, it's an invitation. An invitation
- 30:26to women to step out. To seek wisdom about your
- 30:31particular gifts, about your particular calling,
- 30:35about the particular plans and purposes that
- 30:38God's put in your life. It's an invitation to
- 30:41step out and seek wisdom in these gifts and callings
- 30:46and purposes and labor for the Lord. This should
- 30:51give us hope. I love Abigail as one of my favorite
- 30:54women of the Bible. I love Abigail. She was married
- 30:58to such a foolish, foolish man. Such a foolish
- 31:04man. And Abigail was a woman, it says, of good
- 31:11understanding. And that's the same word they're
- 31:14used for noble and wisdom. And when her husband
- 31:20failed to cover and protect the family, that
- 31:25nobleness of Abigail rose up and went out to
- 31:28this anointed King David, this mighty soldier
- 31:33who was about to wipe out her house. And she's
- 31:36like, no, wait, no, wait. Here, here are the
- 31:38provisions you need. Don't do it, David. Don't
- 31:42shed blood, David. You're the king. Don't shed
- 31:45blood. She was not a timid woman hiding out behind
- 31:50her foolish husband. She stepped up with power
- 31:55and bravery and might in a noble manner, and
- 31:59she saved her household. And when her husband
- 32:03died in his foolishness, she became the wife
- 32:07of King David. I love Abigail because it's in
- 32:12Abigail's ordinary life that she does extraordinary
- 32:17things. And so as we are moving into fourth gear,
- 32:25we're getting closer. I want to ask the question
- 32:29to you, what drives you? What drives you? Our
- 32:35text, a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be
- 32:41praised. To fear the Lord is to honor the Lord,
- 32:49is to revere the Lord. It is to worship the Lord.
- 32:55And so if what is driving you is to look like
- 32:59the Proverbs 31 woman, listen, that's not what
- 33:03she got praised for, her list of dues. What she
- 33:07got praised for was fearing the Lord, was her
- 33:13worship of the Lord. You will never measure up.
- 33:21to her task list. You will never measure up.
- 33:26But that's okay because what we're called to
- 33:30do is to fear the Lord. What we're called to
- 33:33be as women is to worship the Lord. To worship
- 33:37the Lord with your kids and talk with your kids
- 33:40on the way to soccer. To worship the Lord and
- 33:43talk with your kids as you're cooking dinner.
- 33:46To worship the Lord and talk with your family
- 33:49about his goodness while you're watching movies.
- 33:52And they roll their eyes at you because you can
- 33:55once again make spiritual application of the
- 33:58storyline. Just be quiet and watch the movie.
- 34:06This woman was not praised because of all she
- 34:09had accomplished. She was praised because she
- 34:13feared the Lord, because she worshiped the Lord.
- 34:16In all of her doing, what drove her was worshiping
- 34:21the Lord. What drives you? What drives you? All
- 34:26throughout Proverbs, we see this theme. And at
- 34:30the very beginning in chapter 1, it says, the
- 34:32fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
- 34:35It says in chapter 9, the fear of the Lord is
- 34:39the beginning of wisdom. If what is driving you
- 34:47is worship, is honoring the Lord in all that
- 34:52you do, here's what you do. You open up your
- 34:55life to the door of wisdom. When you open the
- 34:59door to wisdom, then you will experience the
- 35:03fruit of wisdom. The truth is, is that her list
- 35:08of to -dos is the fruit of her fear of the Lord.
- 35:12And we get so focused on copying her fruit. Listen,
- 35:16you're an apple tree, and you're trying to copy
- 35:18an orange tree. You've got to be fearing the
- 35:21Lord, and then you just want to flourish as an
- 35:24apple tree. You've got apples coming all out
- 35:27of the place. You've got apples to give away.
- 35:30generosity. You got apples to plant here and
- 35:33here and here. And wherever you plant your apples,
- 35:36they're going to grow up and they're going to
- 35:37bear fruit and they're going to succeed. Why?
- 35:41Because you quit trying to be like the orange
- 35:43tree. You invited the wisdom that comes from
- 35:47the fear of the Lord. And it doesn't matter what
- 35:50you do and how you look like the person on Facebook
- 35:53you keep stalking. Listen. You're created in
- 36:00the image of God to be you. And as you are you
- 36:04and you worship God being you, you will see the
- 36:11fruit of Proverbs 31. And so we know what the
- 36:18fruit of wisdom looked like for Proverbs 31 woman.
- 36:22My question today for us is what would wisdom
- 36:27look like? in your life today, if you were to
- 36:33revere God in everything, if you were to worship
- 36:35God in everything, what would wisdom look like
- 36:40in your life? If you were to worship God in all
- 36:45that you do, what would wisdom look like in your
- 36:50life? What would this Hebrew poem be describing
- 36:56your life? This morning, the team is going to
- 37:01come. And as they're coming, I want to just finish
- 37:06this off in fifth gear for you to cruise on out
- 37:08of here. At the beginning of the book of Proverbs,
- 37:14woman wisdom sounds out the invitation to the
- 37:20simple man to enter her house. Come and enter
- 37:24my house, she calls out. There's an invitation,
- 37:29and I love that invitation because it's not wisdom
- 37:32calling for all the super smart people to come
- 37:35into her house. It's for the simple. It's for
- 37:39the people that don't have much wisdom and knowledge
- 37:41saying, come in. Lady Wisdom is calling you in
- 37:46and wants to bestow wisdom to you. By the end
- 37:52of Proverbs. What we have is what the picture
- 37:56looks like when that simple man chooses to enter
- 38:00into wisdom. Metaphorically, what we have is
- 38:06taking wisdom on as the wife. God calls us to
- 38:12choose wisdom to marry her. To become one with
- 38:19wisdom. And that begins... With living life driven
- 38:25by worship. With living life driven by serving
- 38:30our God. And if there's one thing that I want
- 38:36my kids to see in my life, whether they agree
- 38:39with me or not, if they can say she's worshipped,
- 38:43she's been consistent in everything, in worshipping
- 38:47God, in fearing God, that's all I need. I know
- 38:52I've failed in many areas as a mom, as a wife.
- 38:57But if they can at least say, well, she tried
- 39:00her best worshiping and fearing the Lord, then
- 39:06we've accomplished our goal. So what drives us?
- 39:11Today, ladies, I want us to shake off any feelings
- 39:16of failure. Because I know what it is as a mom.
- 39:19How many of you older ones wish, man, if I knew
- 39:22now what I did when I was eight, I wish I could
- 39:24go back and reparent again. Wouldn't that be
- 39:28great? Knowing what we know now, but we can't.
- 39:34But time and time again, I see women carrying
- 39:37shame and regret. Listen, it's time to let that
- 39:42stuff go. That's part of what the enemy uses
- 39:44to steal, kill, and destroy. And then today,
- 39:47let's say, you know what? I'm going to rise up
- 39:49as a noble woman. I'm going to rise up in bravery.
- 39:54I'm going to rise up in power and strength and
- 39:57might as a noble woman. Because the truth is,
- 40:01is I don't care how old your kids are. I don't
- 40:04care if they're other people's kids. When Darren
- 40:07said, how many of you are believing for a miracle?
- 40:09I believe every one of us should have a hand
- 40:12raised. I believe there are people that we're
- 40:16believing and fighting for. I believe there are
- 40:19situations that we are believing and fighting
- 40:22for. And it requires us to rise up in nobleness.
- 40:26It requires us to rise up, not in our own strength
- 40:29and might, but in the power and the might and
- 40:32the strength of the Lord, worshiping through
- 40:35it, serving him through it. not backing down,
- 40:38not when it gets tough, when it gets hard, when
- 40:41you're exhausted, to not back down, but to rise
- 40:45up. to rise up in nobleness and say i'm going
- 40:49to worship even more i'm going to fear god even
- 40:52more i'm going to revere god even more because
- 40:55what i'm fighting for is worth fighting for my
- 40:58households i'm fighting for my children my great
- 41:01grandchildren my great great grandchildren i'm
- 41:04fighting for it is not a one and done thing we're
- 41:07believing for legacies we are fighting for legacies
- 41:18Of this world. Why? Because we are women of God.
- 41:21Because we are noble women of God who's called
- 41:24us to something beyond ourselves. And he has
- 41:27put inside of you the ability to tap in to the
- 41:31ancient days, the ancient wisdom, and to rise
- 41:34up in a way you've never thought you could. You
- 41:37never thought you could. Listen, it's time to
- 41:40do that. It's time to do that. There's no waiting
- 41:43for something magical to happen. There's not
- 41:46waiting for... to get a little easier and then
- 41:49I will. It's when you are in the deepest pit.
- 41:52It's when it feels like the bombs of the enemy
- 41:55are just bombing you all around on every side.
- 41:58That is when it is required for you to rise up
- 42:02in nobleness. That's the time when it's time
- 42:05for you to say, I will rise in the spirit of
- 42:08the Proverbs 31 woman. And I'm going to, whatever
- 42:11I do, I'm going to do it worshiping. I'm going
- 42:13to do it serving. And I'm believing for the fruit
- 42:16to be released. And so here's this morning what
- 42:19I want us to do. In a moment, we're going to
- 42:22go outside. Your kids can play. We've got gifts.
- 42:26We've got Lotus drinks for you out under the
- 42:28tent. But for the next five minutes here, I want
- 42:33us to just whatever you feel like you are cannot
- 42:37be your truth. I feel weak and I feel like I
- 42:41have failed. cannot be your truth. It may be
- 42:46your truth, but it can't be the truth you live
- 42:48in. You've got to start saying, I'm living in
- 42:51the truth of what God has said about me. And
- 42:53God has given to me this lady wisdom. And I'm
- 42:58going to stop making excuses. Well, God, it's
- 43:02so hard. It is hard. But you have immeasurably
- 43:08more. than what you could ask or believe available
- 43:11to you. You have the courage and the bravery
- 43:16available to you. And so this morning, I want
- 43:22us to take our first step at being a woman of
- 43:26valor. I want us to take our first step at being
- 43:30a noble woman. Maybe you haven't felt that way.
- 43:32Well, today is the day. And we're going to just
- 43:36for a moment sing this song over our families.
- 43:39We're going to sing it over our friends. We're
- 43:42going to sing it over our city. And we're going
- 43:45to rise up, not in our own style, our own abilities,
- 43:50strength, and might, but we're going to rise
- 43:52up by faith as God -fearing women, as worshiping
- 43:56women. And we're going to say, as a noble woman,
- 43:59as a brave woman, I'm going to release this into
- 44:03the atmosphere of my household, of my city, of
- 44:07my church. Amen? So will you stand with me this
- 44:10morning and for the next five minutes or so,
- 44:13let's just begin to do that. If you've got the
- 44:16stuff, if you've been carrying the baggage, I
- 44:19want you to let it go. Let it go. You can't keep
- 44:22carrying that baggage and become the woman of
- 44:25nobleness. You've got to let it go and look to
- 44:28the one who empowers you, makes you strong.
