Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Whoa, I said that. That was a little bit crazy.
- 0:22I feel the pressure to say Centennial World in an
- 0:25interesting way every single day.
- 0:27Now that I know you guys say it along with me, I love it, but it
- 0:30does put the pressure on me. Anyways, welcome back to Mini
- 0:34Scroll everyone. I fear I have a very big episode
- 0:38for you guys today, so strap in, maybe get like a snack.
- 0:41I have no idea how long this episode's going to be, but I
- 0:43have four stories for you guys. One of them is kind of short,
- 0:47but before I get into the stories, I wanted to give you
- 0:49guys a little bit of a business update.
- 0:52I know some of you like hearing about this.
- 0:55I do put time stamps down below. If you don't give a shit about
- 0:58like me or the business that I run or this podcast or anything
- 1:02fair, just go down to the time stamps and the stories will
- 1:05start. So very exciting news.
- 1:07But a couple of weeks ago we signed our very first year long
- 1:13partnership for next year. There is going to be some
- 1:16content like across everything. So like our newsletter, our
- 1:19TikTok, our podcast, obviously, and also on my own personal
- 1:25TikTok and Instagram, which is like a little bit unhinged
- 1:27because I don't, I don't know, I don't really have, I don't do
- 1:32like personal sponsorships or anything.
- 1:34I mean, I literally have like 1000 followers on TikTok, that's
- 1:37it. But on my Instagram, I have more
- 1:40than that. But still like I am not like an
- 1:42influencer, you know, like I kind of I went down the YouTube
- 1:46route for a little bit like vlogging my life personally.
- 1:48And then I was like, this is actually just not for me.
- 1:51So it's interesting. It's kind of a cool part of the
- 1:53partnership, but it's actually going to be around like my
- 1:57journey as a founder and like how this partnership and like my
- 2:00founder experience tie into together as opposed to like me
- 2:04talking about the brand or the product, if that makes sense,
- 2:07Which feels a lot more authentic and real.
- 2:09Cuz that's what I do on my channels.
- 2:10Like if I do make TikTok content or reels or whatever, it's all
- 2:14about the business. So if you guys aren't following
- 2:17me on Instagram, please follow me.
- 2:19It's just at Lauren Meisner under score.
- 2:21I know a lot of you guys, most of you guys are not following
- 2:24me, but yeah, it's really exciting.
- 2:26I feel like, you know, we've been doing this now this brand
- 2:29Centennial world for a few years now.
- 2:31We're actually coming up sounds kind of insane on our 5th
- 2:35birthday, but mini scroll I've only been doing since April and
- 2:38then the bigger podcast infinite scroll I did for several years
- 2:41before with, you know, my Co founder Jordan who left at the
- 2:44beginning of this year. So it feels like a big win for
- 2:48us. Like we're I still feel like
- 2:49we're a baby brand even though we're almost technically five
- 2:52years old. But like so much has changed and
- 2:54we've changed our business model like 100 times in those five
- 2:58years. And I feel like now we have it
- 3:01set and it feels like just sticking with this.
- 3:04The work is starting to pay off, which is like so exciting.
- 3:07And the other thing that I wanted to share, I feel like
- 3:11it's, I mean, it's definitely not a win.
- 3:14I think that this is just like going along with what I was
- 3:16saying about like the founder journey, like some of the best
- 3:19things can happen to you in the same week as like some of the
- 3:22biggest losses. And to be fair, like given the
- 3:26context of this year and everything I've gone through
- 3:28like this is nowhere near one of like the quote UN quote biggest
- 3:31losses. But I was like this close.
- 3:34I feel like this close to getting an interview, an in
- 3:37person interview with JoJo Siwa and I did not get it.
- 3:42I'm so sad. So tonight is the Australian
- 3:45TikTok Awards. They do the TikTok awards every
- 3:47year since I think like 2020 or 2021, probably 2021 because I
- 3:51think we were locked down in 2020.
- 3:53But yeah, so every year there's the Australian TikTok awards
- 3:56around this time in Sydney and we are always invited, but we've
- 4:01actually never been granted like red carpet access.
- 4:04So last year I was like, hey, we would love to do red carpet next
- 4:08year. You know, feels like it's a
- 4:10seamless fit. We have a media brand that
- 4:13almost exclusively covers TikTok creators, TikTok trends, what's
- 4:17happening on TikTok, you know, and a lot of you guys actually
- 4:21this year have been asking for like more Australian focused
- 4:24TikTok and like news and information, not information
- 4:28news and like creators and stuff like that.
- 4:31So yeah, it felt like obviously it feels like the red carpet we
- 4:34should absolutely be at. It actually feels like this
- 4:36should be like, one of the biggest events in our calendar
- 4:39year. Yeah.
- 4:40So this year when we found out JoJo Siwa was coming, I was
- 4:44like, please can we get red carpet access?
- 4:46Like, we need to interview JoJo Siwa.
- 4:47We have covered her like, 1000 times on this podcast.
- 4:51Like, think about how many times we have talked about JoJo Siwa
- 4:53and you guys know, like, I am a JoJo Siwa apologist.
- 4:59Like I, I see what she has been through.
- 5:03And I was like, please. Anyways, So that is like the
- 5:05plight of being a startup is you have these wins where like
- 5:09someone will take a chance on you and you feel so grateful and
- 5:12you're like, Oh my God, I cannot believe that we're getting this
- 5:16opportunity. And then you will be humbled so
- 5:20quickly, like the very same day. And it's just that constant
- 5:27fight of trying to like prove yourself, you know, like trying
- 5:31to prove that I have an audience that would very much like to
- 5:35hear from JoJo Siwa. You guys would die if I was
- 5:38interviewing JoJo Siwa. That would be so crazy.
- 5:41So it's just like always, constantly like breaking down
- 5:44these fucking barriers of being like, this is who we are.
- 5:47This is what we're doing. We do have an engaged audience.
- 5:50We do reach this many millions of people every single month.
- 5:53Like we are covering this like we are the Australian, as far as
- 5:57I know, the only Australian Gen. Z publication that covers
- 6:02exclusively Internet culture. You know, like we don't really
- 6:05cover mainstream pop culture. Like we cover what is happening
- 6:08online. And 90% of that is related to
- 6:11what is happening on TikTok. And so it is just that like that
- 6:16dichotomy of like experiences in like the same like week is so,
- 6:23so crazy. But yes, so that is kind of my
- 6:25little Centennial world business update.
- 6:28But I'm so excited about this year long partnership.
- 6:31It feels like a huge win. It feels like a huge, like
- 6:33weight off of us. And it just feels like, yeah,
- 6:37the start of something like really exciting.
- 6:39All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 6:42Me saying that we don't cover mainstream pop culture.
- 6:44My first story is literally about Taylor Swift.
- 6:46However, it is a Taylor Swift story related to TikTok
- 6:50theories. OK, so there are new theories as
- 6:53to when Taylor Swift is going to release reputation.
- 6:57Taylor's version. So our partnerships manager Alex
- 7:01is the biggest Swifty. So I asked her to put this
- 7:04theory together for me and she wanted me to say on the podcast
- 7:09before I share this theory that this is not her theory.
- 7:11This is like a culmination of TikTok theories, which is how we
- 7:15report on the news here. Anyways, you guys know that.
- 7:17OK so Swifty's are now convinced that Taylor is releasing
- 7:20Reputation Taylor's version on the final leg of her tour in
- 7:24Vancouver. This is like just bullet points
- 7:27like bam bam bam. Here are all the reasons.
- 7:29OK so stick with me. In her music video for her song
- 7:32Karma, you see Taylor dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz
- 7:36walking on the yellow brick road and she is in her Ruby red
- 7:40slippers and she says I keep my side of the road clean.
- 7:44You wouldn't know what that means.
- 7:45Which is a lyric from not from Reputation from Karma.
- 7:48This signals to all the people who have wronged her and as we
- 7:50know reputation the album is all about the people that have
- 7:53wronged her. OK then you look back to the
- 7:56Lover music video where Taylor is climbing the ladder in the
- 7:59Lover house to the reputation room.
- 8:02And the room she is climbing from only has yellow clothes
- 8:06hung up and a wooden basket on the floor which signals back to
- 8:10the yellow brick road and Dorothy with Toto in her basket
- 8:14which then signals back around to the Karma music video.
- 8:18And if you look at Taylor's Instagram grid right now, you
- 8:21can see in her post that she has created a yellow brick path with
- 8:24four of her posts so far. If her next post is yellow, then
- 8:28the path continues. Otherwise if her next post isn't
- 8:32until December 6th, which is her first show in Vancouver, that it
- 8:36may be the Reputation album cover where the path leads to
- 8:39this release. And then the craziest full
- 8:42circle part of this is that Vancouver is known as the
- 8:46Emerald City. I actually didn't know this, I'm
- 8:49Canadian but I'm from Toronto. And Alex was like, is this true?
- 8:52And so I was like looking it up online and actually it seems
- 8:55like it is true. It is called the Emerald City.
- 8:57And that would make so much sense that she releases her
- 9:00Dorothy storytelling at the place called the Emerald City,
- 9:03obviously. OK, so now this is some extra
- 9:05lore. There are like 3 points of extra
- 9:07lore that Alex included in this. Taylor had an interview with
- 9:10Times Magazine on December 6th, 2023 and said reputation.
- 9:15Taylor's version vault would be fire and her first show in
- 9:19Vancouver is December 6th, 2024, exactly 1 year later.
- 9:25The extra extra lore is that her reputation bodysuit recently has
- 9:28changed from the Red snakes to the Gold snakes AKA the yellow
- 9:32brick road. And then this is extra extra
- 9:36crazy fucking lore, Alex wrote in quotes.
- 9:39Taylor always dresses to the album launch like her outside
- 9:42real world fashion always symbolizes like the album
- 9:45launch. And recently she's apparently
- 9:47been wearing Plaid and she says who wears Plaid?
- 9:51Fucking Dorothy. OK, love you.
- 9:53Good luck. OK, so I don't know about all of
- 9:57that stuff, but I'm going to say it would make sense just from
- 10:00like a practical perspective for her to release reputation before
- 10:03the Eras Tour ends. Because the Eras Tour, at least
- 10:06the way that I take it, is that it is like a representation of
- 10:10this era of her career, right, that she is deciding then to
- 10:13kind of bring to a close. And I think it would be really
- 10:17exciting if we saw something like completely different from
- 10:20Taylor after the Airs tour ends. So yeah, I think it makes sense
- 10:24that she would release like the final album that she hasn't
- 10:27rerecorded. And I know she hasn't rerecorded
- 10:29debut, but I also know that a lot of Swifties think she just
- 10:32won't rerecord that one. So I'm kind of just ignoring
- 10:35that fact. But I think, yeah, like when it
- 10:38comes to reputation, it makes sense for her to like close that
- 10:41chapter by re releasing it before the Eris tour ends.
- 10:44And then once the Eris tour ends and then all of her re records
- 10:47are done. Like that is closing a huge
- 10:51chapter like that is closing this chapter of her career,
- 10:54which I see the Eris tour as like a symbol of, if that makes
- 10:58sense. So that is the latest theory.
- 11:00Let me know if you guys believe it or not, OK?
- 11:04The next story that I have is that McKenna Gibbons has
- 11:06defended herself against Taylor. Frankie Paul's clap back from
- 11:10yesterday. So McKenna has come with her own
- 11:13receipts to debunk what Taylor implied yesterday in her Tik
- 11:16Toks. For a refresher, Taylor posted a
- 11:18screenshot of a message that Mckenna's phone had sent back.
- 11:22Like a mid, you know, the swinging stuff saying hope
- 11:25you're having fun in Moab. I'm drunk and I wish I was
- 11:28kissing you. So Taylor was showing that
- 11:30saying like McKenna sent me this message showing that McKenna was
- 11:34like really down for the swinging.
- 11:36So McKenna in this new TikTok today showed the full thread.
- 11:40So after Taylor responded being like, oh, I was drunk last night
- 11:43too. Like we can kiss next weekend.
- 11:45Haha. Like just like was nice.
- 11:46Back to that message, McKenna replied saying Oh no, ha ha.
- 11:50I don't know what I even said. I have zero memories of any text
- 11:53messages going to you. What did it say?
- 11:56Was it a voice message? So McKenna says she couldn't
- 11:58even see that message. Like the message where she said
- 12:01hope you're having fun in Moab. I'm drunk and I wish I was
- 12:03kissing you. Which is why she was like, what
- 12:05did I send you? Did it?
- 12:06Was it a voice message like a voice note?
- 12:09Because she's like, I couldn't even see it because Brayden, who
- 12:12was Mckenna's husband at the time, sent it to Taylor from her
- 12:15phone and then deleted that message.
- 12:18But McKenna still has it on her iPad.
- 12:20So like the messages she was showing us in the TikTok from
- 12:22today were screenshots of her iPad messages like her I
- 12:26messages on her iPad. So she's like, I could see it in
- 12:28the I cloud like on my iPad, but it was not in my phone, which is
- 12:32why I was like, what did I send you?
- 12:34And then she showed more messages where they're talking
- 12:36about how Mckenna's ex Braden sent Taylor that message.
- 12:39So I guess that was like a known thing they had talked about.
- 12:42And you can actually see McKenna, right?
- 12:44I was talking about you and wanting you there and told
- 12:47presumably Braden, but she like scratched out his name.
- 12:50So I think she probably wrote Bray or Braden to text you on my
- 12:53phone. And then she continues by
- 12:55talking about how she feels like this whole swinging stuff has
- 12:57painted her in like a bisexual light, which she is not.
- 13:01And she was like, no judgement to anyone that is, but like I'm
- 13:03not. So I think that was, again, her
- 13:05trying to prove like she was not down for the swinging, like she
- 13:09had wanted it to stop. And I mean, I said this
- 13:11yesterday, but this is just Taylor being so messy because
- 13:15those messages had time stamps. Like, I believe that those are
- 13:18real messages that Mckenna's showing.
- 13:19And Taylor obviously knows how the conversation continued after
- 13:23she received that message from Mckenna's phone.
- 13:26So yeah, I think it was just Taylor being really shady.
- 13:29And she is just, like I said yesterday, like all those girls,
- 13:31not McKenna, but like, all the girls on the show are like
- 13:33masters of drumming up engagement and drama online.
- 13:38And they're doing it to get people to watch Season 2, you
- 13:41know? And McKenna says, like, she's
- 13:42been offered the show many times.
- 13:44She's always declined. And this like, I don't think
- 13:47Mckenna's pardon this on her telling her story like that.
- 13:50I don't think is. I mean, it's definitely not for
- 13:52the show. Like she's not on the show.
- 13:55So like, it's not for the show. But yeah, it's all just kind of
- 13:57like culminating together at the same time of like when Taylor
- 14:00and like all the other girls are trying to drum up like press and
- 14:03drama and stuff for their show for Season 2 to get kind of like
- 14:07us excited for Season 2, I guess.
- 14:08So I guess Taylor was leaning into that when she made that
- 14:12TikTok about McKenna. But now it seems like it's
- 14:15backfiring because McKenna is coming here with the receipts.
- 14:17OK, the next word that I have for you guys is we need to talk
- 14:21about the creator who is going viral for sharing her unhinged
- 14:24out of office messages. So Chef Moe's is a chef and a
- 14:28creator on TikTok with over 87,000 followers.
- 14:32She shares cooking vlogs and like lifestyle content mostly.
- 14:35According to her TikTok playlist corporate work day.
- 14:39It seems like she works as an operations manager as well for a
- 14:43catering company. So as well as being like a
- 14:44private chef, she works, you know, a corporate job, like
- 14:49being an operations manager for this catering company.
- 14:51I don't know if that's where she currently works, but as of
- 14:54April, that's what her vlogs were saying.
- 14:56OK, so earlier this week she went super viral for talking
- 14:59about these unhinged out of office messages that she sends
- 15:02when she goes away or like that she sets up to send when she
- 15:05goes away. At first they were like fun
- 15:08little stories about like adventures involving like
- 15:12squirrels and sharks and they would just be really fun, like
- 15:17little, little stories that you can read or you know, when you
- 15:20know, I'm not there. So then I changed it and I
- 15:23started making the stories a lot more serious and they had like a
- 15:27historical context and they had fun facts and they were just
- 15:32like a great elaborate stories. And my most recent one is giving
- 15:36Wellness tips like how to stretch at your desk, how to
- 15:39practice mindfulness. You know how to make sure that
- 15:42you get up and walk every, you know, 20 minutes if you, if you
- 15:46spend a long time at your desk. OK so she said that her boss
- 15:49keeps pulling her up being like these are unprofessional.
- 15:51Like, please just set up like more normal out of office
- 15:55emails. And she was saying that she
- 15:59feels like she is being, quote, smothered by corporate America
- 16:02right now, that her personality is being smothered.
- 16:04So this has caused quite the discussion online.
- 16:07A lot of people are like, come on, this is obviously really
- 16:10unprofessional. Like, get a journal if you want
- 16:13to express yourself. And others are kind of on her
- 16:16side saying basically something like this would make work way
- 16:20more enjoyable if people felt like, empowered to be themselves
- 16:23and share these, like, quirky sides of themselves.
- 16:27And OK, I actually have a story about a really unhinged out of
- 16:31office e-mail that I got only just a few months ago.
- 16:33So it was someone working at a media agency who was,
- 16:36interestingly enough, representing a really big bank,
- 16:39which feels kind of crazy when you think about it because you
- 16:41think about banks as being like, so corporate.
- 16:44And they literally had like, Unicorn emojis and sparkles and
- 16:48hearts. And it was like, hey, diva, I'm
- 16:51on vacay. Like, it was actually wild.
- 16:54It was so funny, but obviously, like me receiving it, I fucking
- 17:00loved it. You know, like I, I shared it
- 17:02with my whole team. We wanted to print it out and
- 17:05frame it and like put it on our wall.
- 17:06Like we thought it was so funny. We were literally dying.
- 17:09It was like brain rot. As an e-mail, it was amazing.
- 17:13But I think it depends on like who that e-mail lands with,
- 17:16right? Like you can never guarantee
- 17:19that the person on the other side of that e-mail is going to
- 17:21appreciate it or how they're going to take it.
- 17:24So I do think you have to play it safe, unfortunately in
- 17:26corporate and you just have to play the game.
- 17:29And this is actually another big conversation right now on TikTok
- 17:32or like corporate talk, I guess. And this is not about Chef MO's
- 17:35specifically, but there's a big discussion right now about how a
- 17:38lot of young people didn't get to experience like an ease into
- 17:40workplace or like corporate life because of the pandemic.
- 17:43And then now obviously like everyone's just been working
- 17:46from home for years. Like even if you still go into
- 17:49the office a little bit, like you know, you're not going into
- 17:51the office five days a week most of us anymore, right?
- 17:54So you just miss out on like observing the dynamics of
- 17:59corporate culture and corporate structures and things like that.
- 18:02Like I know for me, entering the workforce when I was right out
- 18:05of university into my first job in corporate, like I realized
- 18:09pretty early on that it didn't come natural to me to understand
- 18:13like the politics of a workplace, the hierarchy and how
- 18:16kind of like all the pieces fit together in an organization.
- 18:19And that was something that I had to like, actively work on
- 18:24learning and getting faster at identifying.
- 18:27And that was something that like I actively worked on throughout
- 18:31my early career. But I think if you're not
- 18:33exposed to that very often, you probably don't even realize,
- 18:36like, you need to learn that, you know, you might not even
- 18:40realize where your blind spots are.
- 18:42OK. But anyways, back to Chef Moe's.
- 18:45So she has really taken this feedback and this virality in
- 18:49stride. She posted a new video today,
- 18:51like making fun of her writing her own out of office emails.
- 18:55And it was basically like, no one at all.
- 18:58And then it was like me writing out of office emails.
- 19:00And it was literally just her typing on her computer for like
- 19:0310 minutes. And then in the caption she
- 19:06wrote, all jokes aside, I understand why I shouldn't do
- 19:09this anymore. I feel like I know it's like low
- 19:12stakes virality, you know, like what she was kind of getting
- 19:15like, quote UN quote backlash for was very low stakes in the
- 19:19scheme of like what people get backlash for in TikTok.
- 19:22But I just love how she responded to this.
- 19:24She's like, you know what? OK, I've heard you.
- 19:27She didn't delete the video and she's just like rolling with it
- 19:31and making a joke out of it. I love that.
- 19:33OK, and the last story that I have for you guys, a very quick
- 19:35one, but it's so random. Alex Warren and Joe Jonas are
- 19:39collaborating on a song. So Alex Warren just teased the
- 19:43release of a new song called Burning Down that will feature
- 19:47Joe Jonas. Actually didn't think Alex
- 19:49Warren was relevant enough to get Joe Jonas to feature on one
- 19:53of his songs. So I guess like, good for him.
- 19:55I don't know. The song is coming December 6th.
- 19:58I don't know anything about this song.
- 20:00If you guys know more about this song, let me know.
- 20:01But it sounds like based on the clip that he played in the
- 20:03TikTok, it almost sounds like it's a song about the hype
- 20:06house. Like it's almost like a song
