- 0:29Speaker 2: 10 years after The protest.
- 0:31Speaker 3: This is our second episode. Check out our first one.
- 0:33Speaker 2: It was with Charles McDonald talking about Colin as football player.
- 0:37Speaker 2: And now we are going to talk about the year 2016.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Next episode is with Howard Bryant talking about 2017 to
- 0:43Speaker 2: like 2019 and then 2020 and beyond. We'll be with
- 0:46Speaker 2: my man Jason Anglin.
- 0:47Speaker 3: But right now.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Coming to us live from Chicago, Illinois, the boy Jason Goff.
- 0:53Speaker 3: What's going on?
- 0:55Speaker 1: What's up, bro?
- 0:55Speaker 4: How you doing, man? It's a great day here in
- 0:58Speaker 4: the city. You know, sun is shining. Ozzie Gibbs never
- 1:01Speaker 4: got retired. Shout out to Ozzie.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Oh, really? Yeah, people are feeling good about sports here.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Although the Luther Burton injury got everybody in a little tizzy.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Oh, that's right.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Y'all got a football team now.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12Speaker 4: I don't know if you know. Number 18, Cover Madden.
- 1:15Speaker 4: It's going to drop as we're taping here in about
- 1:17Speaker 4: four or five hours. So yeah, you might see the
- 1:20Speaker 4: Bears every once in a while.
- 1:21Speaker 1: You being a Lions fan and all. Yeah, man.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I can't wait to go ahead and get them two
- 1:25Speaker 3: off them boards. It's going to be good.
- 1:26Speaker 2: We coming back. Coming back, coming back. You know what
- 1:29Speaker 2: I'm saying?
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I knew it.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Kaepernick and not even the taking the knee, but the
- 1:37Speaker 2: sitting next to the water cooler. There's a level of
- 1:42Speaker 2: me that feels like this is an exaggeration, but I don't.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I feel like it's a do you remember where you were?
- 1:47Speaker 2: Not so much when he sat next to the water
- 1:49Speaker 2: cooler because that was a Friday night football game, preseason
- 1:53Speaker 2: football game.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Wasn't nobody watching that shit. Apparently Colin was barely watching that.
- 1:56Speaker 2: But the next day, when he came out here, you know,
- 2:00Speaker 2: and said that he was doing it for the homies
- 2:01Speaker 2: in the Shaolin Temple, I know where I was. I
- 2:04Speaker 2: was at my place in Miami. I just moved in
- 2:06Speaker 2: there maybe a month before that, a little bit later.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And he said that, and I was like, oh, buddy,
- 2:11Speaker 2: it's about to be a thing.
- 2:13Speaker 1: It's coming. It's coming. Yeah, we're about to get into our.
- 2:18Speaker 4: I'm 45, going to be 46 here. I didn't get
- 2:20Speaker 4: the chance to witness or be around for Ali saying, hey,
- 2:25Speaker 4: y'all want me to fight for a country that won't
- 2:27Speaker 4: fight for me when I get back and all that.
- 2:30Speaker 4: I wasn't here for, you know, Tommy and John in
- 2:33Speaker 4: the Olympics. I wasn't here, right? It was one of
- 2:36Speaker 4: those moments where like, oh shit, this is... this is
- 2:39Speaker 4: going to be our generation. And I'm not trying to
- 2:42Speaker 4: throw him in that mix, but this is going to
- 2:44Speaker 4: be our boiling point. Oh, this is how you feel.
- 2:47Speaker 4: And everybody getting out clear. Because there was no running
- 2:50Speaker 4: from what was happening and what was getting ready to happen.
- 2:54Speaker 4: And as a Black man in this space.
- 2:58Speaker 4: You know, white folks turn to you and go, okay,
- 3:01Speaker 4: how do you feel about it? And then we turn
- 3:02Speaker 4: into white folks like, no, no, no. You tell me
- 3:05Speaker 4: how you feel about it.
- 3:06Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 3:08Speaker 3: You go first.
- 3:08Speaker 4: It's like the Super Bowl in New Orleans where Beyonce
- 3:11Speaker 4: and the lights went out and everybody's looking at each other.
- 3:14Speaker 1: No, back to you, fam. Come on. I got nothing
- 3:16Speaker 1: back to you. They weren't ready for live TV.
- 3:19Speaker 4: In this moment, we weren't ready for live TV as
- 3:22Speaker 4: a sports community because we hadn't gone through, you know,
- 3:24Speaker 4: all around the edges. We talk about, ain't enough black
- 3:26Speaker 4: coaches here. Ain't enough black people here. Ain't enough black
- 3:29Speaker 4: owners here. Like, we shouted and did what we needed
- 3:32Speaker 4: to do. And then all of a sudden, the game,
- 3:35Speaker 4: you know what I mean?
- 3:35Speaker 1: It was game day. So I was, I.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Had pretty much just gotten afternoon drive around that time.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Here in the city of Chicago.
- 3:47Speaker 4: So all my life, sports radio was a thing, right?
- 3:52Speaker 1: Like 11, 12 years old, I'm like, oh, shit, we
- 3:54Speaker 1: got a 24-hour station. I get a chance. One day
- 3:57Speaker 1: I'm going to be on that station and I'm going
- 3:59Speaker 1: to be doing all the things.
- 4:00Speaker 4: That the people who I listen to do in terms
- 4:02Speaker 4: of talk about their experience, talk about life, talk about,
- 4:05Speaker 4: you know, the music they liked and all those other things.
- 4:08Speaker 4: I had never had to hear or experience these white
- 4:10Speaker 4: men talk about anything racist.
- 4:14Speaker 1: You know what I mean? You want to be a
- 4:14Speaker 1: race fan. You know, all the things back in the day.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And oh, shit, it landed in my lap. 2016.
- 4:20Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, we get a chance to tell people
- 4:24Speaker 4: exactly why this is happening. The experiences of not just athletes,
- 4:29Speaker 4: but people who are going to work on a daily
- 4:31Speaker 4: basis who have to before they walk into that door,
- 4:33Speaker 4: understand that there are going to be some things they're
- 4:35Speaker 4: just not understood. about the experience. And now you get
- 4:39Speaker 4: to put it out there for everybody. Boy, was I
- 4:41Speaker 4: wrong when I realized, Oh yeah, we wasn't here for that.
- 4:45Speaker 4: We didn't, we don't care about your experience. And all
- 4:48Speaker 4: those things came rushing at me while I'm talking about, okay,
- 4:51Speaker 4: this is what he's doing. And I, I still, to
- 4:54Speaker 4: this day, because I mean, this is a seminal point in, uh,
- 4:58Speaker 4: my life personally and professionally. I still, to this day
- 5:02Speaker 4: did not appreciate or understand, um, where we weren't as
- 5:10Speaker 4: a country. Right. Like you think things are moving in
- 5:13Speaker 4: a certain direction. They seem like it. But, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 4: shit is still not where it's supposed to be. And
- 5:18Speaker 4: then you get hard stop. Hey, rich folks, this is
- 5:21Speaker 4: how I feel. Poor folks, this is how I feel.
- 5:24Speaker 4: You're like, wait a minute.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Hold on. Do we not go get into the nuance
- 5:28Speaker 1: of none of this?
- 5:28Speaker 4: He talked to Nate Boyer like the things that happened
- 5:33Speaker 4: and we're getting ready to come out. We weren't ready
- 5:36Speaker 4: to dissect or disseminate any of that responsibly, I think.
- 5:41Speaker 4: So when it hits, I'm sitting there like, okay, can't
- 5:44Speaker 4: wait to talk about this. And then you walk into
- 5:46Speaker 4: the gig and you see that people can wait for
- 5:50Speaker 4: you to.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Talk about this, right? And then you talk, you know,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and it's a local situation too here in the city.
- 5:57Speaker 4: So you got everybody there, local experiences, guys, athletes that
- 6:00Speaker 4: they didn't like, that they thought might've been on this
- 6:02Speaker 4: same wave. Hell, we got back into Mahmoud Abdul-Raouf.
- 6:06Speaker 1: All these things started, right, all these things started bubbling up.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And I'm like, man, this, They ain't ready for this.
- 6:13Speaker 4: And the they that I was worried about was the
- 6:16Speaker 4: people who were so used to not talking about these
- 6:19Speaker 4: kinds of things and not making it come like people, oh,
- 6:22Speaker 4: you talk about things, things will change. Well, you know,
- 6:26Speaker 4: black folks have been talking about things for a long,
- 6:27Speaker 4: long time and still waiting for some of that change.
- 6:31Speaker 4: And I think we hit that moment where there is
- 6:34Speaker 4: a quarterback, a dynamic quarterback, a black quarterback saying, in
- 6:39Speaker 4: the NFL, a starting quarterback who, you know, is having success.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Like.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Colin Kaepernick, you know, that Green Bay game is still
- 6:47Speaker 4: one in the playoffs to be remembered for the ages of, oh, shit,
- 6:51Speaker 4: you cannot play man coverage on this man.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Right? Like, you know, the pistol and Chris Alton being
- 6:57Speaker 1: introduced to.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Like, what University of Nevada football was for the first
- 7:00Speaker 4: time on, like, a Thursday night.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Like, oh, look at this.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Look at this Finley dude who others would have put
- 7:06Speaker 4: it wide receiver 20 years ago doing this. So now
- 7:08Speaker 4: he gets to this point and he says this and...
- 7:11Speaker 4: I just realized how many people weren't ready for the conversation.
- 7:14Speaker 4: And shockingly so, I realized how many Black media members
- 7:20Speaker 4: weren't ready for the conversation. in a way where it's like, hey,
- 7:24Speaker 4: this is your chance to just tell them how you
- 7:26Speaker 4: feel about something.
- 7:28Speaker 1: And also have the insight of the culture.
- 7:31Speaker 4: That you were raised in, the things that you were told,
- 7:35Speaker 4: the conversation that you had to have. At that time,
- 7:39Speaker 4: my son, who is now nine getting ready to be 10,
- 7:41Speaker 4: he wasn't here yet. So I'm having conversations. Meanwhile, we're
- 7:46Speaker 4: watching this.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Murder porn On our phones.
- 7:51Speaker 4: With everything that's happening, because this is why Colin is kneeling, right?
- 7:56Speaker 4: And I sat there and I thought to myself, like, man,
- 8:00Speaker 4: there was a moment there that I think we.
- 8:02Speaker 1: All got let down by how simplistic we tried to
- 8:09Speaker 1: make it.
- 8:10Speaker 4: In the conversations and the people who are receiving the conversations,
- 8:13Speaker 4: how simplistic, like, don't talk to me about socks with,
- 8:16Speaker 4: with pigs on them.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Right. Like, do you care about the message?
- 8:20Speaker 3: I think there's a lot of things in that. Right.
- 8:23Speaker 2: And I think these are key things to remember when
- 8:25Speaker 2: we talk about late August, 2016, because I think he
- 8:27Speaker 2: did it on my birthday. Cause I was like, I
- 8:31Speaker 2: had vacation time, but I didn't have time to plan
- 8:33Speaker 2: a vacation. So I wasn't working, but I was still
- 8:36Speaker 2: just in Miami and, One thing to remember, Donald Trump
- 8:39Speaker 2: has not been elected. And in fact, the idea of
- 8:42Speaker 2: him being elected still seems like a preposterous thought by August.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Like we're rounding out convention season or whatever it is.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:48Speaker 2: So are you talking about like we thought things were different?
- 8:50Speaker 2: We thought Trump was going to lose.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Right. Like we was like, there's no way they do
- 8:54Speaker 3: that again. Right.
- 8:55Speaker 2: So that's kind of part number one to bring up
- 8:58Speaker 2: in terms of thinking where we are in time. Number two,
- 9:02Speaker 2: and you just said that I'd almost kind of forgotten
- 9:04Speaker 2: is that. It really kind of starts with Trayvon Martin, right?
- 9:08Speaker 2: We have other names we could throw out. Mike Brown,
- 9:10Speaker 2: I think in 2014, has occurred or whatever. But the
- 9:13Speaker 2: idea or these discussions about police violence against citizens, has
- 9:19Speaker 2: been going for a while now. It was a largely
- 9:22Speaker 2: online issue, but it then came into the mainstream. And
- 9:24Speaker 2: so that became the dominant, really, I feel like the
- 9:28Speaker 2: dominant issue of social justice of the.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Time, right? Or a dominant barometer of a certain morality.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Like right now, Israel-Palestine, regardless of where you are, has
- 9:39Speaker 2: become the barometer for morality, right? The police violence thing
- 9:44Speaker 2: had kind of like become that. And because of the videos,
- 9:47Speaker 2: you talk about their murder port. You can watch these
- 9:49Speaker 2: motherfuckers getting shot by the police, right? Not even like,
- 9:52Speaker 2: there's no video of Trayvon Martin. There's no video of
- 9:54Speaker 2: Mike Brown, but there was more. We have all these
- 9:56Speaker 2: things coming, right? Like I think it's 2017 is when
- 9:58Speaker 2: the Laquan McDonald video comes out of Chicago, but, like,
- 10:01Speaker 2: we just have a gradual building of this issue when
- 10:05Speaker 2: it comes up And so Kaepernick, who was not flying
- 10:08Speaker 2: high as a player at that point, was honestly too.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Hurt to play.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I remember just seeing online, because again, this is an
- 10:15Speaker 2: online story at this point. It was the second week
- 10:18Speaker 2: when they had the game where people noticed. It was
- 10:20Speaker 2: the second week that he hadn't stood up.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Nobody noticed. Nobody cared.
- 10:24Speaker 2: But you started to get just like a, hey, picture
- 10:27Speaker 2: from the crowd or from the press box. Akon and
- 10:28Speaker 2: Kaepernick didn't stand with their national anthem. Now, It's a
- 10:31Speaker 2: question to be asking these snitching ass motherfuckers why they
- 10:34Speaker 2: even had to do that or whatever, right? Man just
- 10:36Speaker 2: over there minding his own business. Why y'all out here
- 10:38Speaker 2: being messy, right? So it comes out, or we discovered this,
- 10:43Speaker 2: and I'm like, ah, wonder how that one's going to
- 10:46Speaker 2: go over. Because as of now, we don't know that
- 10:49Speaker 2: Colin been radicalized. We're not up on game at this point.
- 10:53Speaker 2: We ain't really talked to him about nothing, right? He
- 10:56Speaker 2: just be out here flexing his stuff up to that point.
- 10:58Speaker 2: The quote that he gave Steve White that I will
- 11:01Speaker 2: never forget. I am not going to stand up to
- 11:05Speaker 2: show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses
- 11:08Speaker 2: black people and people of color. To me, this is
- 11:11Speaker 2: bigger than football and it would be selfish on my
- 11:13Speaker 2: part to look the other way. There are bodies in
- 11:15Speaker 2: the street and people getting paid leave and getting away
- 11:19Speaker 2: with murder. He went all the way Michael Evans on it, boy.
- 11:22Speaker 2: He leaned all the way into that. And I remember
- 11:25Speaker 2: when I read that and I was like, Huh.
- 11:30Speaker 1: We're here.
- 11:31Speaker 3: We're here. Let's see how this goes. Now, the work
- 11:33Speaker 3: part for me is funny.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I don't know. You're hearing Bigger Than Hip.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yes, yes. You're looking for Alexis of Justice. A dream
- 11:44Speaker 3: of some substance.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Some substance, yeah.
- 11:47Speaker 2: So, I don't know if you knew this part or
- 11:50Speaker 2: remember this part, but our longtime Right Time listeners, those
- 11:54Speaker 2: who go back to when the Right Time was a
- 11:56Speaker 2: radio show, Many of you will remember what I'm going
- 11:59Speaker 2: to discuss, which is, remember I told you I was home,
- 12:02Speaker 2: but I was on vacation. And I have a general
- 12:06Speaker 2: outlook when it comes to when I'm on vacation, which is,
- 12:09Speaker 2: I ain't at work.
- 12:11Speaker 3: I don't really care who you put on my show.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I do remember this moment. I was actually listening during
- 12:19Speaker 1: this moment.
- 12:20Speaker 2: And thought, like, is this not a bit? Yeah, so
- 12:25Speaker 2: for this week, by coincidence, Will Cade and Kate Fagan
- 12:31Speaker 2: were the guest hosts of the show.
- 12:33Speaker 3: And bless Kate's heart, she did her best.
- 12:35Speaker 2: But this was not the time that my tribe needed
- 12:42Speaker 2: Will Cade. Now, one may have made an argument, and
- 12:48Speaker 2: it could have easily come up, that perhaps in this moment,
- 12:54Speaker 2: I should have gone into work.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Right?
- 12:58Speaker 2: Like, it's an emergency sort of situation. But I don't
- 13:03Speaker 2: do that. I take my time. We don't leave vacation
- 13:06Speaker 2: on the table.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I take my time. I had to call in the show, man.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Will and Dominique got into it on like a TV
- 13:15Speaker 2: show during the day, and then they came on the
- 13:17Speaker 2: show that afternoon, and they got right back into it.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Shannon was intentionally booking guests to rile Will up. I
- 13:26Speaker 2: really had to call into the show to let everybody
- 13:29Speaker 2: know it's going to be OK.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Right. Like I'm here. I should I should have left
- 13:34Speaker 3: you without a dope beat to step to. You're right.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Like that was that was that was all me that
- 13:38Speaker 3: I didn't I didn't do that.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I dare you.
- 13:41Speaker 2: It just gradually kind of burned. It just kind of
- 13:44Speaker 2: gradually burned. It gradually got going. Um, and then it
- 13:48Speaker 2: got to the place where Colin had to have the
- 13:50Speaker 2: summit with the Nate Boyer dude about what to do
- 13:53Speaker 2: because they were going to play a preseason game in
- 13:56Speaker 2: San Diego. And for those of you who don't know
- 13:58Speaker 2: San Diego military it out.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:00Speaker 3: And I believe it was military night at the game.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:04Speaker 2: And that was the game where Colin kneeled for the
- 14:07Speaker 2: first time and the kneeling became the gesture. The story
- 14:12Speaker 2: was that it was Nate Boyer's idea to, Eric Reid
- 14:15Speaker 2: says that it was his idea. The details of it,
- 14:18Speaker 2: I don't think are that important. What I do think
- 14:21Speaker 2: is important is that the idea was kneeling is a
- 14:24Speaker 2: way of giving deference. And so perhaps I will not
- 14:27Speaker 2: stand for this anthem, but I will kneel as a
- 14:29Speaker 2: way to show deference because the National Anthem apparently now
- 14:34Speaker 2: entirely belongs to the military. It wasn't always like that before,
- 14:37Speaker 2: but now it's there. So anything you do during the
- 14:39Speaker 2: National Anthem is actually about the military. I ain't really
- 14:41Speaker 2: know that shit until right then. I had never thought
- 14:43Speaker 2: about that when they would have us do all that
- 14:45Speaker 2: stuff in school. I wouldn't think about that not one time.
- 14:48Speaker 2: But anyway, Colin did the kneeling. And honestly, I don't
- 14:53Speaker 2: think there was a single person who didn't like the
- 14:55Speaker 2: fact that he didn't stand and saw the kneeling and
- 14:57Speaker 2: was like, oh, okay. I think that's an appropriate compromise.
- 15:01Speaker 2: That was how you knew it wasn't about the sitting
- 15:04Speaker 2: and it wasn't about the kneeling. It was really fundamentally
- 15:08Speaker 2: about the point. And he was like, hey man, any
- 15:10Speaker 2: white folks out here tripping, dog, and I've had enough
- 15:13Speaker 2: of this.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I just didn't, the outrage seemed like, you know, there's
- 15:19Speaker 4: always one question that you can ask to kind of
- 15:21Speaker 4: get you to an answer, right?
- 15:23Speaker 1: With the outrage, it was like, hey, but, you know,
- 15:26Speaker 1: these freedoms you speak of, OK, cool. Now we're done.
- 15:29Speaker 1: We back to it. Or, hey, man, do you understand?
- 15:33Speaker 4: Like for me, perspective is when you've got the most
- 15:36Speaker 4: privilege in a conversation, shutting the fuck up and and
- 15:39Speaker 4: listening because you might be right or you might learn something. Right.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Like if you think this is ridiculous, why is this happening?
- 15:49Speaker 4: The why is this happening was being answered for you in.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Short media clips, long form news segments. I mean, we
- 15:58Speaker 4: talk about world news on every channel, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSN.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Everybody's covering it. You know why this is happening.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Like the obtuse nature with which, you know, the capitalists
- 16:13Speaker 4: and also that's the part that always bothered me was
- 16:16Speaker 4: the poor folks that was calling me. talking about, you know,
- 16:20Speaker 4: this is what you should do and this is what
- 16:22Speaker 4: they should. I'm like, listen, man, you're a couple of
- 16:24Speaker 4: steps away from this happening to you. You ain't got
- 16:27Speaker 4: no bread. These marginalized and underserved communities, all these catchphrases
- 16:31Speaker 4: that we like to throw on, these are Black people
- 16:35Speaker 4: problems that Black people are bringing to you and saying, hey,
- 16:38Speaker 4: this shit ain't cool.
- 16:40Speaker 1: You don't understand why. You don't want to understand why.
- 16:44Speaker 4: And also, it showed me Very, very, I guess, midway
- 16:51Speaker 4: through the game in terms of career-wise. I played ball
- 16:56Speaker 4: in a suburb of Chicago on Saturday mornings. And a
- 17:00Speaker 4: guy who used to host at the radio station that
- 17:03Speaker 4: I worked at, legendary dude, came up to me.
- 17:06Speaker 1: And he saw me playing ball. Hey, how you doing? Hey,
- 17:08Speaker 1: what's going on? How you feeling? He goes, be careful
- 17:12Speaker 1: with the Kaepernick stuff. And immediately, you know, what you
- 17:15Speaker 1: talking about?
- 17:16Speaker 4: This is a man who for years on the station
- 17:19Speaker 4: had done anything that he really wanted to do in
- 17:22Speaker 4: terms of race, in terms of saying wild shit.
- 17:26Speaker 1: You know, it's Chicago. You got some wild out dudes.
- 17:29Speaker 1: And they loved him for it.
- 17:30Speaker 4: And I said, hey, man, what would you do if
- 17:34Speaker 4: anybody ever told you in the position that you was
- 17:37Speaker 4: in to be careful about what you talk about? And
- 17:41Speaker 4: what I didn't know he was telling me was, hey,
- 17:43Speaker 4: the people that make the decisions are all on that side.
- 17:47Speaker 4: That's what he was trying to tell me. So while
- 17:50Speaker 4: this is unfolding, you're finding out, oh, it's not only
- 17:54Speaker 4: the ranters and ravers and the hoopers and hollers.
- 17:57Speaker 2: This is.
- 17:58Speaker 4: And then you see, you're going to see what happens
- 18:00Speaker 4: with the Cowboys and Jerry Jones playing that flag. No,
- 18:04Speaker 4: no pun intended. And guys linking arms. And you see
- 18:06Speaker 4: what happens with Kenny Stills. And you see what's going.
- 18:09Speaker 1: On around the league. And you're like, oh.
- 18:11Speaker 4: It's not only the quiet, you know, burden, it's the
- 18:15Speaker 4: loud truth that these people are rocking with here. And
- 18:18Speaker 4: to be, I don't know about, how'd you, it felt
- 18:24Speaker 4: under siege in a way where it was like, hey man,
- 18:29Speaker 4: Y'all told me y'all wanted my opinions. Y'all told me
- 18:32Speaker 4: y'all wanted me to tell you the truth about things.
- 18:34Speaker 4: We tell these athletes, hey, be great at the sport,
- 18:38Speaker 4: but also, hey, man, how you feeling about certain shit?
- 18:41Speaker 4: If you want to divulge, right? You know, who's the
- 18:44Speaker 4: goalie for the Boston Bruins that didn't go to.
- 18:46Speaker 1: The White House? I forget his name. But it's like, no, no, no.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Thank you for telling me how you feel. You feel me?
- 18:51Speaker 4: I can go now forward with whatever information. This dude
- 18:54Speaker 4: tells you, hey, by the way, you know, black folks
- 18:57Speaker 4: keep getting shot. The violence is not stopping. By the way,
- 19:00Speaker 4: it hasn't stopped. We're 10 years later. It's just still
- 19:02Speaker 4: going on. I've heard you talk about it many times. Seemingly,
- 19:07Speaker 4: people got tired of discussing the subject, even though it's
- 19:09Speaker 4: still going on.
- 19:10Speaker 1: But somebody said, hey, ain't this crazy to nobody?
- 19:14Speaker 4: And then it blows up. And then you get all
- 19:17Speaker 4: the politics that go into it. And then you get
- 19:19Speaker 4: Super Bowl halftime shows and all these other things.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I just sat there. It was a moment. And let's
- 19:24Speaker 1: face it, too.
- 19:25Speaker 4: I was doing what I needed to do. And the
- 19:30Speaker 4: people who owned the station that I worked at sent emails, oh,
- 19:35Speaker 4: we're so proud to have somebody like you in our fold,
- 19:39Speaker 4: in our company, in our network. And I'm like, but
- 19:42Speaker 4: what y'all going to say? Shout out to me for,
- 19:47Speaker 4: I guess, saying something. But what how do y'all feel
- 19:49Speaker 4: about this and things got quiet and then you look
- 19:52Speaker 4: around the city and you're like oh they got a
- 19:54Speaker 4: lot of y'all very very quiet in a in a
- 19:58Speaker 4: in a ecosystem that we're.
- 19:59Speaker 5: Not supposed to be quiet we ran the rave about
- 20:02Speaker 5: backup tight ends and all these other things that don't
- 20:04Speaker 5: matter all the time why is this now and I
- 20:07Speaker 5: realized okay If you feel a certain way about.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Self-awareness and inventory, you don't know if this is the
- 20:15Speaker 1: last check you're going to get. So you might have
- 20:17Speaker 1: to keep quiet about these things.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Let me tell you something I learned. I'll never forget.
- 20:20Speaker 3: In 08, 08 was the year I started doing radio.
- 20:24Speaker 3: And I.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Was listening to the sports talk station, and they was
- 20:29Speaker 2: doing something. And he was a generally good dude. Like
- 20:32Speaker 2: his cats, I ain't got nothing bad to say about.
- 20:34Speaker 2: But they were doing a thing.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Who was more black, Obama or Tiger Woods?
- 20:40Speaker 2: And I think that they were intended to be tongue-in-cheek, comma, however.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Now, this is the lesson that I learned here. It
- 20:48Speaker 3: was that.
- 20:50Speaker 2: When y'all be listening to the radio station and that
- 20:53Speaker 2: dude on the radio say something crazy, you just turn
- 20:56Speaker 2: that shit off and go to work. When I be
- 20:58Speaker 2: listening to the radio station and that motherfucker say something crazy,
- 21:01Speaker 2: I just turn that shit off and go to work.
- 21:03Speaker 3: And he right there.
- 21:08Speaker 2: He in the cafeteria not in the cafeteria he on
- 21:11Speaker 2: the bike like like like you you buy the water
- 21:15Speaker 2: cooler yeah like it runs through your mind can i
- 21:18Speaker 2: be krs1 right now and pull up on pm dawn
- 21:21Speaker 2: like it's like this is this is on the board
- 21:24Speaker 2: if you gangster right like if you really the man
- 21:26Speaker 2: you say you are you can run up in here
- 21:28Speaker 2: and do something about it but you're not What are
- 21:32Speaker 2: you talking about?
- 21:35Speaker 1: You're making me think of the phone call, dog. It's
- 21:38Speaker 1: so crazy.
- 21:39Speaker 4: I used to get a phone call at a desk
- 21:41Speaker 4: that I never sat at during the show, during the
- 21:44Speaker 4: times that I was gone, and every day this dude
- 21:46Speaker 4: would leave a voicemail, like these veiled death threats or whatever.
- 21:49Speaker 4: And one day, I was walking past the phone, and
- 21:52Speaker 4: I dubbed the phone call because I talked about it
- 21:54Speaker 4: on the air the next day. I was walking past
- 21:56Speaker 4: the phone, and it rang, and I thought.
- 21:58Speaker 1: To myself, this is him. I'm like, this is it.
- 22:02Speaker 4: I pick up the phone and I go, hey, man,
- 22:05Speaker 4: I know this is you. And I know the message
- 22:06Speaker 4: you're getting ready to leave. And you didn't hear anything, right?
- 22:10Speaker 4: You just hear breathing. I go. don't you think it's
- 22:13Speaker 4: weird that you know what time I come in and
- 22:16Speaker 4: get off every day.
- 22:17Speaker 1: And you still in the shadows? Like, it's a way
- 22:23Speaker 1: to be this guy. This just ain't the most efficient way, right? Like,
- 22:27Speaker 1: the understanding, radio is a different world, man.
- 22:30Speaker 4: The understanding of sports radio and just think if podcasting 10.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Years ago would have been what it is now.
- 22:41Speaker 4: And how many people would have had a nibble of
- 22:44Speaker 4: this thing that I think it came apart because nobody
- 22:51Speaker 4: wanted to get on the message of, hey, what are
- 22:54Speaker 4: we going to do about this thing?
- 22:55Speaker 1: Right.
- 22:55Speaker 2: And by the way, that's what people wanted to talk
- 22:58Speaker 2: about this.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Because on one hand, black people. I would say black
- 23:05Speaker 2: people at the median, certainly, and a certain class of
- 23:08Speaker 2: ally wanted to talk about it because it's like, now
- 23:10Speaker 2: we got an opportunity for the world to hear us.
- 23:12Speaker 2: But as the internet has told us, people are addicted
- 23:15Speaker 2: to rage. And so the people that wanted to rage,
- 23:18Speaker 2: no matter what they said about wishing you would stick
- 23:20Speaker 2: to sports, hell no.
- 23:22Speaker 3: That shit, like, in fact, I'd be terrified to find.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Out what would happen if that shit popped off right
- 23:26Speaker 2: now because it wouldn't be no stick to sports because
- 23:28Speaker 2: everybody knows that outrage juice It's the thing, and this
- 23:33Speaker 2: topic generates outrage from all parties involved just about different things.
- 23:38Speaker 2: So we could be out there, man, that shit look
- 23:40Speaker 2: like the trial and a time to kill.
- 23:42Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 23:43Speaker 4: For real.
- 23:43Speaker 2: It's free Carl Lee and fry Carl Lee right next
- 23:47Speaker 2: to each other, just screaming back and forth, right? And
- 23:51Speaker 2: by the way, all of this we're talking about and
- 23:53Speaker 2: all the things that we're talking about in this moment
- 23:56Speaker 2: What isn't happening while we're talking about this?
- 23:58Speaker 3: Colin Kaepernick is not playing football. He is hurt.
- 24:03Speaker 2: He has not gotten off the oak and the entire
- 24:08Speaker 2: world around him has caught on fire. Now, coming up next,
- 24:12Speaker 2: we'll talk about the fact that eventually at some point
- 24:14Speaker 2: he had to get out here.
- 24:15Speaker 3: And play some football.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Look.
- 24:19Speaker 2: If your supplement shelf needs a reset, now's the time.

- 25:04Speaker 2: All right, we are back with Jason Goff. This gets
- 25:06Speaker 2: us to the Colin Kaepernick got benched for Blaine Gabbert,
- 25:09Speaker 2: which is not really true. Kaepernick was hurt so bad
- 25:12Speaker 2: in that 2015 season that he was too hurt for
- 25:15Speaker 2: them to release him because otherwise they probably would have
- 25:18Speaker 2: cut him because he sounded deal with a terrible structure.
- 25:20Speaker 3: But he was too injured to get cut.
- 25:22Speaker 2: And the whole way when he wasn't playing, Chip Kelly,
- 25:25Speaker 2: who was then the head coach, was like, yeah, Colin's hurt.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Colin's hurt. Once Colin was healthy, Colin played. Colin was
- 25:32Speaker 2: not bad. The 49ers certainly were.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Terrible. Yeah, they were awful.
- 25:37Speaker 3: But he was not bad.
- 25:40Speaker 2: And here's the question I want to throw at you,
- 25:42Speaker 2: because I don't think we've thought about this part. Can
- 25:45Speaker 2: you imagine how this would have gone if the 49ers.
- 25:51Speaker 3: were good.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Like if the 49ers were like what if they were
- 25:57Speaker 2: good enough to make the playoffs but like what if
- 25:59Speaker 2: they were like good enough to really be out here rocking.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Shit well it would have taken football to where it
- 26:09Speaker 4: usually wants to go but it's scared to go into
- 26:11Speaker 4: that territory of boxing whereas the Mexican versus Irishman.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Or black man versus white man. You know what I mean?
- 26:19Speaker 1: Or Mexican versus Mexican. You know what I mean?
- 26:22Speaker 4: It would have been whoever was on the other side
- 26:25Speaker 4: of that. You talk about Blaine Gabbert. Maybe Blaine Gabbert
- 26:29Speaker 4: was the beginning of the... He was the blueprint for
- 26:33Speaker 4: the blackout. You got to make sure that one of
- 26:36Speaker 4: them do... This is the other thing, too. During that time,
- 26:40Speaker 4: if he and that team were great... The problem was
- 26:45Speaker 4: the people who are fighting on our side of this thing,
- 26:48Speaker 4: where it's like, you know, you're saying something, y'all.
- 26:51Speaker 1: They can't fight. Like, everybody who was like, hey, man,
- 26:56Speaker 1: I got so many people.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Hey, man, I really never looked at it this way,
- 27:00Speaker 4: and thank you for opening my eyes.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, well, where you been? Sorry, I had
- 27:04Speaker 1: to be the guy to open your eyes to this,
- 27:06Speaker 1: or Colin Kaepernick.
- 27:07Speaker 4: But it was also like, you going against, like you mentioned,
- 27:10Speaker 4: the Ragers on the other side of this thing.
- 27:12Speaker 1: And the Ragers... The football audience is, you know.
- 27:16Speaker 4: A bunch of wild-out white dudes fresh out of college,
- 27:21Speaker 4: the older white cats who are raising those dudes, and
- 27:24Speaker 4: then a bunch of brothers who out here just want
- 27:26Speaker 4: to watch the football because we know cats. You know,
- 27:28Speaker 4: we all know a few dudes who got to the league,
- 27:31Speaker 4: got close to the league, or should have been in
- 27:33Speaker 4: the league for whatever reason. So we all get thrown
- 27:35Speaker 4: in that arena together, and it's like, what is the
- 27:37Speaker 4: discourse really going to be, right?
- 27:40Speaker 1: And as you.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Mentioned, even in the dissemination of information... Kyler really didn't
- 27:45Speaker 4: have anybody on the side in the media that I
- 27:47Speaker 4: knew about on the other side of things where it
- 27:49Speaker 4: was like, oh, yeah, we're going to let people know
- 27:52Speaker 4: that this contract is ass, that you're more hurt than
- 27:55Speaker 4: you are. Like, these things would have gotten out. We
- 27:59Speaker 4: learned dudes' vaccination status nowadays, you know, a few years ago. Like,
- 28:04Speaker 4: the reporting that is and could be done, you also
- 28:07Speaker 4: started to see the slant. from the media as well. Like,
- 28:11Speaker 4: who is down with who? Who has to protect certain relationships?
- 28:14Speaker 4: Who has to make sure that this thing flames out
- 28:17Speaker 4: in a way, right? Like, you're not going to tell
- 28:19Speaker 4: me that collusion was on deck. Hell, we watched it
- 28:22Speaker 4: with Lamar Jackson. You think they weren't going to get
- 28:23Speaker 4: Colin Kaepernick to ask about it?
- 28:26Speaker 2: Well, the thing that got me in terms of, like,
- 28:28Speaker 2: talking about media, because one of the defining stories that
- 28:31Speaker 2: you mentioned a little earlier, the pig socks, which, I mean,
- 28:37Speaker 2: there was... If we're all being honest, there was always
- 28:40Speaker 2: an element of FAM 101. to this right like the
- 28:45Speaker 2: excitement that somebody has when they first really gotten into
- 28:50Speaker 2: like the surrounding literature and the zeitgeist that is around
- 28:53Speaker 2: that and they're really charged up about what it is
- 28:56Speaker 2: and they be going you know I mean that big
- 28:58Speaker 2: ass afro and everything else you understand what I'm saying
- 29:01Speaker 2: like he was a true believer you know what I
- 29:04Speaker 2: mean he was in on it 100% the whole way
- 29:10Speaker 2: but what we found also is it was.
- 29:12Speaker 3: Media members couldn't wait for the chance. They were waiting
- 29:17Speaker 3: for the opportunity.
- 29:18Speaker 2: And one of them in particular was Armando Salguero, who
- 29:24Speaker 2: I believe then worked at the Miami Herald because Colin
- 29:29Speaker 2: had also done something that is very popular amongst the
- 29:34Speaker 2: FM 101 types in this, which is he had that
- 29:36Speaker 2: T-shirt with Malcolm F.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Dill.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Castro on it now I had talked to Colin about.
- 29:45Speaker 2: That and he told me this was very early in
- 29:49Speaker 2: the whole thing but he told me that he saw
- 29:53Speaker 2: that as a representation of Malcolm's willingness to talk to
- 29:57Speaker 2: others in order to get things done, which is a
- 30:00Speaker 2: bit of an ahistorical interpretation, only because Malcolm and Castro
- 30:05Speaker 2: were allies Like there's no, there's, there's, there's no real
- 30:10Speaker 2: way around that.
- 30:11Speaker 1: There's no bridge I have to cross. There's no bridge
- 30:13Speaker 1: I have to cross to get to you. I'm aligned
- 30:15Speaker 1: with you in a way. Yeah.
- 30:16Speaker 2: And there were some questions about skepticism that Malcolm had
- 30:19Speaker 2: about Castro himself is it's not like Castro was black. However,
- 30:22Speaker 2: in terms like there was, I would say they were
- 30:24Speaker 2: much farther from being allies than enemies. I think that
- 30:26Speaker 2: would be fair. They were not, they were not operating
- 30:29Speaker 2: as oppositional forces in part. I think, you know, you know,
- 30:32Speaker 2: Castro loved to antagonize the United States in any way possible.
- 30:36Speaker 3: Like, who do you dislike the most? Okay, cool. I'll
- 30:38Speaker 3: hitch to that.
- 30:38Speaker 2: But Salguero, being a Cuban in Miami, they really don't
- 30:42Speaker 2: have no sense of humor about that whole Castro situation.
- 30:46Speaker 2: And so he came with the questions when they played
- 30:49Speaker 2: the game in Miami. And Colin, I thought, handled the
- 30:55Speaker 2: questions well. I did not have a problem. Like, they
- 30:59Speaker 2: were talking about Pigg's Like, it was the N-word. You
- 31:04Speaker 2: understand what I'm saying? Like, I didn't realize people took
- 31:07Speaker 2: that term so seriously or so personally.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Like, it's like, okay, he said the cops are pigs. Like,
- 31:12Speaker 3: this is... Wait till you hear that Cypress Hill song. Like,
- 31:15Speaker 3: I just didn't know. I didn't know that that was,
- 31:18Speaker 3: I didn't know that we treated.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Or any of the Predator or America's Most Wanted.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Like, I know the police had gotten themselves a promotion
- 31:25Speaker 2: in recent times in terms of their role that they
- 31:27Speaker 2: played in society, but I didn't realize that was that
- 31:29Speaker 2: big a deal.
- 31:30Speaker 3: But it then again became your reminder that nobody got
- 31:35Speaker 3: into this, I would say none of the white dudes
- 31:37Speaker 3: at least, got into sports media to talk about this stuff.
- 31:40Speaker 3: They did not. And then it happened.
- 31:42Speaker 2: But then it was some people who just couldn't wait
- 31:44Speaker 2: to get their lick off when the time came. And
- 31:46Speaker 2: it was that was kind of the tour for him
- 31:48Speaker 2: through that season. When you stop and think about it,
- 31:50Speaker 2: like anything was really going to be possible. And when
- 31:53Speaker 2: you showed up in this new place and we had
- 31:56Speaker 2: reached a time in our society where the people who
- 31:59Speaker 2: disagreed with him the most fervently were more likely.
- 32:04Speaker 3: To be quiet.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Right. Like. I don't.
- 32:09Speaker 2: The idea of liberal media bias has always felt preposterous
- 32:13Speaker 2: to me in a world where Fox News exists, right?
- 32:15Speaker 3: And I know who the white dudes are. They're in charge.
- 32:18Speaker 2: When you know who runs this stuff, maybe it's just that,
- 32:20Speaker 2: maybe it's a liberal bias, but liberal doesn't stop you
- 32:23Speaker 2: from being racist.
- 32:23Speaker 3: And my black ass just can't appreciate it. You know
- 32:26Speaker 3: what I mean?
- 32:27Speaker 2: So perhaps there's some separation of everything that's going on.
- 32:30Speaker 2: But I do think it's fair to look back, especially
- 32:33Speaker 2: 10 years later, that there's things that people would have
- 32:36Speaker 2: said about Colin if it happened now. that I don't
- 32:40Speaker 2: think they were felt as free to say because they
- 32:44Speaker 2: knew they sounded a little bit wrong.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Give me something. Give me an example where I could
- 32:51Speaker 1: go off of.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Because I'm listening to you about the media.
- 32:55Speaker 3: Let me ask you this.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Who among us in sports media really stood ten toes
- 33:01Speaker 2: down the hardest as a direct critic? of Colin and
- 33:06Speaker 2: what he was doing without hiding behind some excuse.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Yeah, without making it about the flag or military.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and even then, it's like, you know, I understand
- 33:17Speaker 2: where he's, you know, he has his view or whatever, comma, however, right?
- 33:20Speaker 2: I feel like today, it'd have been somebody on it
- 33:24Speaker 2: a lot more gangster in what their opposition is.
- 33:27Speaker 4: So the only person that I, because I got into
- 33:31Speaker 4: a discussion, shall we say, with this person for about
- 33:35Speaker 4: a good 12, 15 minutes about it, was a guy
- 33:37Speaker 4: who I dubbed one of my favorite quarterbacks as a kid.
- 33:41Speaker 1: And that was Boomer Esiason. Yeah.
- 33:43Speaker 4: Yeah, we were CBS on the station, so we had
- 33:46Speaker 4: Boomer Esiason on. And I talked to Boomer Esiason with
- 33:51Speaker 4: my co-host about, you know, what Colin was doing, what
- 33:54Speaker 4: he was going through. And it seemed like he was... And,
- 33:58Speaker 4: you know, Boomer's a big, you know, NYPD, FDNY guy. Like,
- 34:02Speaker 4: he does a lot for military and the troops and
- 34:05Speaker 4: is always flying that flag. But at the very end
- 34:09Speaker 4: of it, I think, one, I'm talking to him about it,
- 34:12Speaker 4: and the voices I'm talking to you, and he said
- 34:15Speaker 4: to me, it seems like you're getting a little emotional
- 34:17Speaker 4: about it. And I wanted to answer in that way. Yeah, man, like,
- 34:20Speaker 4: there are certain... First of all.
- 34:21Speaker 1: I don't look at emotion as... weakness.
- 34:23Speaker 4: I feel like if your decisions are driven by them,
- 34:26Speaker 4: then you will end up looking weak or making weak
- 34:28Speaker 4: decisions at some point. But he said that in a
- 34:31Speaker 4: way where I'm like, oh, we're getting somewhere. And by
- 34:34Speaker 4: the very end of it, he said, I'm not going
- 34:37Speaker 4: to have him disrespect my flag.
- 34:39Speaker 1: And the very last word, because it's my shirt, I'm like, yeah,
- 34:42Speaker 1: but it's his flag too.
- 34:44Speaker 4: And in that moment, I remember like, okay, so at
- 34:47Speaker 4: least it's being said. And now that you say it,
- 34:51Speaker 4: I don't know many people who came out and was like,
- 34:57Speaker 4: this is, screw this. I'm not with this. And these
- 35:00Speaker 4: are the reasons why. Why do you think that is?
- 35:04Speaker 1: Why do you think, because it was, I'm trying to
- 35:09Speaker 1: find a good way to say this.
- 35:11Speaker 4: I found in my experiences, and this is no shade,
- 35:16Speaker 4: when certain folks feel.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Excluded and They do one of two things. They either
- 35:22Speaker 1: shit on whatever is being said.
- 35:25Speaker 4: Or they get upset that they're excluded from the experience
- 35:28Speaker 4: and shit on whatever is being said. I think that
- 35:31Speaker 4: there were so many people who didn't understand fully, even
- 35:35Speaker 4: though it's.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Right there for you. You don't have to understand, I guess.
- 35:39Speaker 4: And when the world is talking about something and forcing
- 35:42Speaker 4: something in your, in your purview that maybe somebody might
- 35:45Speaker 4: have the drop on you or a better understanding, these
- 35:48Speaker 4: people don't know how to just come up off of,
- 35:51Speaker 4: I simply, surely don't understand what's going on. And I
- 35:56Speaker 4: think a lot of the media cats and, and, and,
- 35:58Speaker 4: and guys and gals hid behind that long enough that
- 36:03Speaker 4: they didn't have to make Any kind of real concrete statement.
- 36:08Speaker 3: I think that.
- 36:12Speaker 2: I think that what people deep down were protecting in
- 36:15Speaker 2: the course of that discussion was their right to not care.
- 36:19Speaker 2: I think that people could very basically and fundamentally understand
- 36:22Speaker 2: that the way police is out here also killing everyone.
- 36:26Speaker 2: They kill white people and get away with it, too.
- 36:30Speaker 2: That is worth noting. And that was one of the
- 36:32Speaker 2: more common defenses was would the police kill white people, too?
- 36:35Speaker 3: And with it implicit, you don't see us crying.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Right. You see what I'm saying?
- 36:41Speaker 3: Like, I think that people were.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Defending their right to see these, you know, and in
- 36:45Speaker 2: many of these cases we talked about, they were very
- 36:47Speaker 2: young people. Like not even black men, the boys.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Like they were defending their right to not have to care.
- 36:55Speaker 2: They were defending their right to be ambivalent to what
- 36:59Speaker 2: was going on around it. There's no way for you
- 37:02Speaker 2: to say, look, man, I just don't really care.
- 37:04Speaker 3: You can't do that. What you have to do is
- 37:06Speaker 3: you have to venerate the police.
- 37:07Speaker 2: And you have to turn it into a situation where
- 37:10Speaker 2: you're saying the police do this just because they got
- 37:12Speaker 2: a zillion things going on.
- 37:13Speaker 3: They got this. They got that.
- 37:15Speaker 2: You know, the heroes deep down got to break some
- 37:17Speaker 2: heads to make some omelets. You know, like they were
- 37:19Speaker 2: they were they were going through all of those things because.
- 37:24Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 37:25Speaker 3: But you couldn't you couldn't really come out there.
- 37:28Speaker 2: It was very difficult in that time to stand up
- 37:31Speaker 2: and fervently be like, what is he talking about?
- 37:34Speaker 1: Nah, nah.
- 37:35Speaker 2: They just didn't want to care about what it was.
- 37:40Speaker 2: I do think that there's a heavy liberal sort of
- 37:44Speaker 2: presence in the media, certainly. But I don't think that
- 37:49Speaker 2: it was enough to where I felt like, oh my God,
- 37:51Speaker 2: every time I go to a press box, it feels
- 37:54Speaker 2: like I went to a DSA meeting.
- 37:55Speaker 3: No, that's not.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Like those those of us who work in this are
- 38:01Speaker 2: kind of like no it never it doesn't if you
- 38:05Speaker 2: really want to know it don't feel that way to
- 38:08Speaker 2: me but I'm talking to a boss or anything like
- 38:11Speaker 2: that right like it's not there I think now after
- 38:15Speaker 2: 10 years of Trump being at our faces like Boomer
- 38:18Speaker 2: Esiason is a great example he is a very conservative
- 38:21Speaker 2: man and now we know that in ways that I
- 38:23Speaker 2: don't think we knew it before Right. I think that
- 38:27Speaker 2: he feels a little more comfortable being 10 toes down
- 38:31Speaker 2: on that. There's always been somebody in your local market
- 38:34Speaker 2: or whatever who will go out there and be that guy. Honestly,
- 38:37Speaker 2: the difference between now and call it 20 years ago was.
- 38:40Speaker 3: That me and you were there 10 years ago.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Like like in that time period, you know, like 10
- 38:46Speaker 2: years before that.
- 38:47Speaker 3: No, not really. They wouldn't, you know, the.
- 38:50Speaker 2: The people that had these views were like few and
- 38:52Speaker 2: far between than as more young people. I think that
- 38:54Speaker 2: was what I really thought by and large was that youth,
- 38:57Speaker 2: like age was maybe the variable.
- 39:00Speaker 4: The thing that pissed me off in my travels were
- 39:03Speaker 4: the people who would, I'll never forget Vinny Del Negro
- 39:09Speaker 4: was coaching a Bulls team that was going up against
- 39:12Speaker 4: Tyreek Evans and the Sacramento Kings. And it was either
- 39:15Speaker 4: rookie year Tyreek or second year where Tyreek was just
- 39:17Speaker 4: a monster.
- 39:18Speaker 1: And they came back from 31 down. Some crazy shit
- 39:22Speaker 1: like that.
- 39:23Speaker 4: And everybody is sitting there in the in the media
- 39:26Speaker 4: uh press conference post game and i'm in there and
- 39:29Speaker 4: it's like one of the first times i'm asking questions
- 39:31Speaker 4: and i go hey man you worried about your job
- 39:33Speaker 4: security after some shit like that go down and vinny
- 39:36Speaker 4: straight up look me in the face answer the question
- 39:39Speaker 4: whatever and then as we're walking out vinny daps me
- 39:42Speaker 4: like i understand.
- 39:45Speaker 1: He's been around the league forever, right? He ain't a
- 39:48Speaker 1: good coach. You know what I'm saying?
- 39:49Speaker 4: You know how many people in that media, scrum, press conference,
- 39:55Speaker 4: post-game thing was like, man, I'd have never been able
- 39:58Speaker 4: to ask that.
- 39:59Speaker 1: That was great, though. And I'm sitting there like, but
- 40:04Speaker 1: why not? You just watched the same shit I just watched.
- 40:06Speaker 1: And that moment was.
- 40:09Speaker 4: 100x for me during 2016. because it's a city with
- 40:17Speaker 4: a lot of microphones, and we only get a few
- 40:20Speaker 4: of them.
- 40:21Speaker 1: And I'm like, hey, y'all, what y'all think?
- 40:26Speaker 4: And you get everything that everybody thinks behind the scenes
- 40:29Speaker 4: when it's time to.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Flip that red light on that on-air button, come on.
- 40:35Speaker 1: shit changes a little.
- 40:36Speaker 4: And I was just, I was astounded by it because
- 40:39Speaker 4: maybe I didn't, maybe I didn't understand the magnitude. See,
- 40:42Speaker 4: I thought it would be a thing that passed where
- 40:44Speaker 4: we look back on it and, you know, how we
- 40:46Speaker 4: look back on other figures. Like, I hate to keep
- 40:50Speaker 4: going back to Ali, but Ali wasn't beloved, right? But
- 40:53Speaker 4: there were people who were like, hey man, you doing
- 40:55Speaker 4: what he's supposed to be doing? Them people didn't have microphones.
- 41:00Speaker 4: So if you got the microphone and you feel that way,
- 41:03Speaker 4: say this.
- 41:04Speaker 1: And then shortly after that, you know, your boy get
- 41:07Speaker 1: let go.
- 41:07Speaker 4: You know, Wayne Brady's turned into Malcolm X's on the air.
- 41:12Speaker 1: It becomes an inventory thing. Like, you know, we can
- 41:15Speaker 1: sell this now.
- 41:17Speaker 4: And I hate the word woke because now it's been used. Like,
- 41:22Speaker 4: let me break this to some of the people who
- 41:25Speaker 4: still use this as a pejorative in this way. It
- 41:28Speaker 4: sounds like you're saying... inward or inward activities to all.
- 41:33Speaker 1: And I, and I've been waiting my entire last five,
- 41:38Speaker 1: six years.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Hey, for all the white folks out there to think
- 41:41Speaker 4: that when they said, I don't want to sound woke
- 41:42Speaker 4: or not, or they were too woke or they lost
- 41:44Speaker 4: something because they were woke.
- 41:45Speaker 1: It sounds a way.
- 41:47Speaker 4: And in these conversations, we should be able to pass
- 41:50Speaker 4: along these feelings and these experiences. Man, when I find
- 41:55Speaker 4: out that media members were on that side and now
- 41:58Speaker 4: have been, you know, converted or are standing even harder, I'm.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Like, hey, man, shit. Feel free. It ain't like it's
- 42:05Speaker 1: going to lose you any business these days. You know
- 42:08Speaker 1: what I mean? You out here rolling.
- 42:10Speaker 4: With the crimson tide of the early aughts.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Y'all got some championships.
- 42:15Speaker 4: Y'all running around putting pros in the league. If you
- 42:20Speaker 4: think that this is the last we're going to see
- 42:22Speaker 4: of this, this is just 1.0. So, yeah, people saying
- 42:27Speaker 4: a lot of things. Like, for instance, the WNBA discourse
- 42:31Speaker 4: and the way it's going down now.
- 42:32Speaker 3: What?
- 42:33Speaker 2: Can you imagine if one of them had decided not
- 42:36Speaker 2: to stand for the national anthem?
- 42:40Speaker 1: Oh, well, let's be real.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Um, the most disrespected person walking around your office or
- 42:51Speaker 4: in your sphere is probably a black woman.
- 42:55Speaker 1: You know what I mean? I'm not even going to
- 42:57Speaker 1: do the woman of color thing. It is a black woman.
- 42:59Speaker 4: So, you know, and they've been holding shit down with
- 43:02Speaker 4: motherfuckers in the NBA was too.
- 43:05Speaker 1: I almost said the word, but was too pumped to
- 43:08Speaker 1: do anything. Right? Yeah! Yeah!
- 43:11Speaker 4: Like, you know, when Derrick Rose wore his I Can't
- 43:15Speaker 4: Breathe shirt, the ladies had been doing it for a
- 43:17Speaker 4: couple of weeks before that, right?
- 43:20Speaker 1: Like, man, I'm not, you know, shout out to.
- 43:21Speaker 4: Derrick, because he was one of the few that actually
- 43:24Speaker 4: was doing it without getting everybody together and doing a
- 43:26Speaker 4: team photo and making it marketing, right?
- 43:28Speaker 1: But like, man, please. Like, where we are now.
- 43:32Speaker 4: And how we how we challenged thought, hopefully, and how
- 43:36Speaker 4: we're going to continue to challenge thought, that moment showed
- 43:40Speaker 4: me a lot in terms of, you know, they're going
- 43:43Speaker 4: to forget about the moment, but you should probably never
- 43:46Speaker 4: forget how you handled that moment. And there's a lot
- 43:49Speaker 4: of people who are running around handling that moment that's,
- 43:51Speaker 4: you know, probably a shout out to them, but, you know,
- 43:54Speaker 4: integrity ain't for sale.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think we realized, or I don't think
- 43:57Speaker 2: I fully realized that what was beginning.
- 44:02Speaker 3: at least it felt like a moment at a point, right?
- 44:04Speaker 2: Like I think a fundamental question about all of these
- 44:06Speaker 2: things is, was it a moment or was it a
- 44:08Speaker 2: movement or was it a moment, right? And when we
- 44:10Speaker 2: get to like talking about 2020, that question becomes a
- 44:14Speaker 2: lot more prominent. But when you think about the stuff
- 44:16Speaker 2: with black folks and police, like you think about the
- 44:18Speaker 2: protests in Ferguson, you think about how it went with
- 44:20Speaker 2: Trayvon Martin. You think about it leading up to Kaepernick.
- 44:23Speaker 2: There really was a long, a long stretch of a
- 44:26Speaker 2: sustained outrage about this issue. And we did start to
- 44:31Speaker 2: see some things like by the time the Kwan McDonald
- 44:33Speaker 2: thing comes around, like it was treated. These things were
- 44:36Speaker 2: treated more seriously. George Floyd was the culmination of it
- 44:39Speaker 2: where people had to be like, damn, that's fucked up.
- 44:41Speaker 2: You know, like it reached that point and it reached
- 44:44Speaker 2: that build and college shook up the world. Like, and
- 44:48Speaker 2: while it was happening, it kind of felt like it, right?
- 44:52Speaker 2: But I don't know if it felt like that off
- 44:55Speaker 2: of the internet. Because on the internet, it felt like
- 44:58Speaker 2: that's what was happening. But that's where media people and
- 45:00Speaker 2: people who consume media were getting together and kind of
- 45:03Speaker 2: going back and forth and hollering at each other and
- 45:04Speaker 2: everything else. I mean, me doing a lot of the hollering,
- 45:07Speaker 2: just to be clear. You know, that's where we were,
- 45:10Speaker 2: but it was... It was part of a move. It
- 45:13Speaker 2: was part of a larger thing. And yeah, we had the,
- 45:16Speaker 2: I can't breathe and stuff like this, but this, like
- 45:19Speaker 2: this right here landed when Colin did. And it was,
- 45:23Speaker 2: and it was because he was an NFL quarterback. a
- 45:26Speaker 2: quarterback who had been to a Super Bowl, like a
- 45:29Speaker 2: name that people knew, and you could make the argument
- 45:32Speaker 2: that his career was down and that's why he did it.
- 45:35Speaker 3: Well, Curt Flood's career was.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Down when he did that thing that he did, but
- 45:38Speaker 2: it didn't mean he didn't do the thing, right? Maybe
- 45:42Speaker 2: he had the thing that puts him to the point
- 45:44Speaker 2: of not giving a fuck no more. That happens, but
- 45:47Speaker 2: somebody still has to do the thing. He wasn't the
- 45:50Speaker 2: only person whose career wasn't going good. He's the one
- 45:53Speaker 2: who did the thing.
- 45:55Speaker 4: And if he wasn't ready for understanding of the moment,
- 46:00Speaker 4: do you think that he would give up being.
- 46:03Speaker 1: A backup for the next four or five years?
- 46:06Speaker 3: I don't think he knew it would go like that.
- 46:08Speaker 1: That's what I'm asking.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:09Speaker 3: I don't think he thought.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Now, on one level, it's fair to ask the question,
- 46:15Speaker 2: if he did know it was going to shake out
- 46:17Speaker 2: like this, would he have done it?
- 46:19Speaker 3: But the bottom line is, he did the thing.
- 46:21Speaker 1: He did it. Yeah, he did it.
- 46:23Speaker 4: And he forced a conversation. And his partner, Ness, she
- 46:29Speaker 4: still rides hard for him and is doing what she's doing,
- 46:32Speaker 4: doing a great job in New York radio. And the
- 46:37Speaker 4: know your rights thing. People have gotten information and education
- 46:41Speaker 4: on things that we wouldn't have had conversations around. I mean,
- 46:46Speaker 4: it's the most important position in American sports is quarterback. Okay?
- 46:51Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, you might say best player on the
- 46:53Speaker 1: NBA team. No. Pitcher on a baseball team, shortstop. No.
- 46:57Speaker 4: It's the glamour boy position of the country.
- 47:02Speaker 1: High school kids grow up and want to be that, right?
- 47:06Speaker 4: There are professionals who, if you stay in the league
- 47:08Speaker 4: long enough, you're going to catch some of this glory.
- 47:10Speaker 1: Shout out to Sam Darnold, right? You want that position.
- 47:12Speaker 1: You want that moment. And for.
- 47:16Speaker 4: that position at that moment to speak to things. I mean,
- 47:19Speaker 4: it's what we've always talked about. You're the CEO of
- 47:22Speaker 4: the team and you're the leader of the team. But
- 47:25Speaker 4: when moments got a little hairy, hey, remember, you're the quarterback.
- 47:30Speaker 4: Everybody's looking at you. Moment got hairy and he was like, yeah,
- 47:33Speaker 4: everybody is looking at me.
- 47:34Speaker 1: I'm not mad.
- 47:35Speaker 4: I appreciate it in a way that at that time
- 47:38Speaker 4: when I was getting ready to have my first son,
- 47:41Speaker 4: I'm thinking about How am I going to raise a
- 47:43Speaker 4: young black man in this atmosphere with all that shit
- 47:46Speaker 4: going on at the same time? I remember going on
- 47:48Speaker 4: the air shortly after I dropped his, his mom was
- 47:53Speaker 4: pregnant with him and drop her off.
- 47:55Speaker 1: And she was listening.
- 47:56Speaker 4: We were listening to the news and listening to like the,
- 47:59Speaker 4: pretty much the roundup of what had happened over the
- 48:01Speaker 4: last two weeks of, of young black men being shot
- 48:04Speaker 4: by the police.
- 48:05Speaker 1: And she starts to sob.
- 48:06Speaker 4: And now I got to go in to a, a
- 48:09Speaker 4: four-hour sports radio show and act like that didn't happen?
- 48:13Speaker 1: No. This is a conversation. We're not going to have.
- 48:15Speaker 4: Like, it's as if when there's mass shootings and gun
- 48:20Speaker 4: violence and we go... Hey, man, T's and P's, it's
- 48:22Speaker 4: not a time to politicize this. We're going to talk
- 48:25Speaker 4: about this some other time. Don't use these people's deaths. Well,
- 48:28Speaker 4: guess what, man? So many deaths was happening. It's like, hey,
- 48:30Speaker 4: there ain't going to be no other time. We should
- 48:33Speaker 4: probably get to this now and see where everybody stands.
- 48:36Speaker 4: And that's why, like, the seeing where everybody stands part
- 48:40Speaker 4: is always, you know, it's always jarring for some, right?
- 48:45Speaker 4: And I think it was so jarring for everybody else.
- 48:47Speaker 4: In the country, they was like, wait a minute, this
- 48:49Speaker 4: is where you stand with this?
- 48:50Speaker 1: This is how you feel?
- 48:50Speaker 4: Hell, I got police in my family who are like, yeah, man,
- 48:54Speaker 4: it's some grimy shit that goes down.
- 48:57Speaker 1: You know, some things that we not even.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Oh, down with. And I'm like, yeah, but let's say this.
- 49:07Speaker 1: If the dude who is on the Nike ad, if
- 49:10Speaker 1: the dude who can get anything and have anything in the.
- 49:13Speaker 4: World that he wants because of the position he holds,
- 49:15Speaker 4: not just in this country, but in this world, You've
- 49:18Speaker 4: got excess resource. You've got excess network. You're around billionaires
- 49:23Speaker 4: because of the ownership groups.
- 49:25Speaker 1: You travel. Yeah. If he's got this on his heart
- 49:29Speaker 1: and he... You know what I get pissed about?
- 49:32Speaker 4: When people don't want to hear from rich folks because
- 49:35Speaker 4: you damn sure don't want to hear from poor folks.
- 49:36Speaker 1: So who you want to hear from? Right. You feel me?
- 49:40Speaker 3: Yep.
- 49:41Speaker 4: You're not going to listen to the pro folks because
- 49:44Speaker 4: you're not around them. And if a rich motherfucker say, hey,
- 49:46Speaker 4: by the way, man, with all this privilege and everything
- 49:48Speaker 4: that I have amassed because of my talent.
- 49:51Speaker 1: There's something sitting on my heart heavy. Yeah, I want
- 49:54Speaker 1: to speak on it.
- 49:55Speaker 4: And to see the response by employers, by corporations, by
- 50:00Speaker 4: the league, by sports media, it was one of those, okay,
- 50:06Speaker 4: It's just a temperature check. Every 10 years, every five
- 50:08Speaker 4: years or so, we get a temperature check. And that
- 50:10Speaker 4: was the temperature check.
- 50:12Speaker 3: All right. Let me ask this last thing before we go.
- 50:14Speaker 1: All right.
- 50:15Speaker 2: When Colin played his last game in the 2016 season,
- 50:18Speaker 2: did you think that was going to be his last game, period?
- 50:22Speaker 1: Absolutely not. Absolutely not.
- 50:25Speaker 4: Because I was still under the assumption that, hey, man,
- 50:28Speaker 4: I didn't see murderers get their gags back.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:33Speaker 2: I'm trying to think when exactly I realized it wasn't
- 50:37Speaker 2: going down. I feel like definitely once he didn't have
- 50:40Speaker 2: a job and the season started, it was like, oh, no, no, no.
- 50:45Speaker 3: This just ain't happening.
- 50:46Speaker 2: I think maybe it might have taken for me to
- 50:48Speaker 2: get through training camp and nobody even just needed a
- 50:51Speaker 2: live arm or anything. But I'm really trying to look
- 50:55Speaker 2: back and think to myself, when did I fully realize
- 50:59Speaker 2: it's a wrap, dawg?
- 51:01Speaker 4: We grew up, though, understanding that collusion was a thing
- 51:05Speaker 4: that you can get in trouble for as kids, right?
- 51:08Speaker 1: So it was like, oh, no, no, don't worry about it.
- 51:10Speaker 2: But also, it would require the whole goddamn league to
- 51:13Speaker 2: be so mad about this.
- 51:15Speaker 3: And in a league where everybody need a quarterback, nobody.
- 51:19Speaker 2: Again, you said Michael Vick got out and it was
- 51:23Speaker 2: a line.
- 51:24Speaker 3: Wait, no.
- 51:25Speaker 4: When I was talking about murders, I had some Atlanta
- 51:29Speaker 4: people coming after me.
- 51:30Speaker 3: Nah, nah. I wasn't referring to Mike. I was just
- 51:34Speaker 3: using Mike as an example of people. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:38Speaker 1: This is the country of second chances. You kidding me?
- 51:42Speaker 4: Like, and did you really need a second chance by saying, hey, y'all,
- 51:46Speaker 4: it's kind of fucked up what's going on. I don't
- 51:48Speaker 4: know if y'all are seeing this.
- 51:49Speaker 1: But yeah, you couldn't have told me that that dude
- 51:52Speaker 1: wouldn't find.
- 51:53Speaker 4: And then the pretzels that people tied themselves, the knots
- 51:56Speaker 4: that people tied themselves. Well, you got to change the
- 51:59Speaker 4: whole system, boy.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Greg Roman saw Chris' old system and, like, college.
- 52:05Speaker 4: Football video game was like, hey, we can just put
- 52:07Speaker 4: this package in and run this with some different verbiage.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Don't tell me shit.
- 52:10Speaker 4: About a system that you got to build for a strong-armed,
- 52:14Speaker 4: left-handed quarterback.
- 52:15Speaker 1: He's lefty, right? He's right-handed.
- 52:17Speaker 3: He's right-handed.
- 52:18Speaker 4: He's a strong-armed, right-handed quarterback that runs like a gazelle. And, well,
- 52:23Speaker 4: you know, his anticipation and his accuracy. Man, hey, let
- 52:26Speaker 4: me tell you what I saw, though. I saw him
- 52:28Speaker 4: go 12-4. I saw him shred the Packers.
- 52:32Speaker 3: In his first playoff. Super Bowl, two NFC championships.
- 52:36Speaker 2: What?
- 52:37Speaker 4: You're going to tell me in a league that, as
- 52:40Speaker 4: a Bears fan, dude, I've watched Steve Stenstrom, Chad Hutchinson.
- 52:45Speaker 1: You feel me? I've watched Drew Henson. I've watched Craig
- 52:49Speaker 1: Krenzel play football.
- 52:51Speaker 4: I've seen Jonathan Quinn throw a football to a man
- 52:55Speaker 4: who was getting paid to catch it and not get there.
- 52:58Speaker 1: I've seen so many things.
- 53:00Speaker 4: Me and Cleveland Browns fans should have been right there
- 53:03Speaker 4: at the altar like, no, no, y'all, somebody.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Can figure it out. I had to watch some shit.
- 53:09Speaker 1: You know?
- 53:10Speaker 4: Shout out to Steve Berline and so many Steves.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Steve Walsh.
- 53:14Speaker 4: I done seen every Steve ever play quarterback. You mean
- 53:17Speaker 4: to tell me this man's saying, hey, can y'all stop
- 53:19Speaker 4: shooting this? It's going to be the difference between him
- 53:23Speaker 4: playing and not playing?
- 53:24Speaker 1: All right. I got you. I got you. This man said,
- 53:28Speaker 1: I done seen so many Steves.
- 53:30Speaker 4: I done seen every Steve ever play football for the
- 53:34Speaker 4: Chicago Bears at the quarterback position. I done seen Mike Tomczak.
- 53:38Speaker 4: You're going to tell me this is what it is? So, hey, man,
- 53:44Speaker 4: there is nothing more powerful than a decision maker with
- 53:49Speaker 4: insecurities and a lack of understanding. And I think you
- 53:54Speaker 4: look across the board in terms of ownership groups, you're
- 53:57Speaker 4: going to find enough of them.
- 53:58Speaker 1: And they're like, we can't do this. Juice ain't worth
- 54:00Speaker 1: the squeeze. Huh? Tim Tebow. You know, hey, Tim is
- 54:08Speaker 1: about God.
- 54:08Speaker 4: Okay? He can do whatever he want. Anytime the Jets
- 54:12Speaker 4: come on through. The Jets had a press conference for
- 54:16Speaker 4: signing a backup quarterback.
- 54:17Speaker 1: You remember when that was going on?
- 54:19Speaker 3: They did.
- 54:19Speaker 1: You remember that?
- 54:21Speaker 3: They did.
- 54:21Speaker 4: Meanwhile, you know, and now, you know, fast forward 10
- 54:26Speaker 4: years later, we got freestyles at block parties about, you know,
- 54:30Speaker 4: struggles and crazy shit going on.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Like I hate how this turned out for everybody, man. Yeah.
- 54:36Speaker 1: Like everybody involved, brother, everybody. I don't think there was
- 54:40Speaker 1: one winner in this situation.
- 54:42Speaker 2: And that's a question we'll get to as this series
- 54:44Speaker 2: goes on.
- 54:45Speaker 3: That is Jason golf. My brother. I appreciate you.
- 54:48Speaker 1: Appreciate you, man.
