- 1:05Speaker 3: And welcome back to a fun little bonus episode. Bonus.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Bonus.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Today we are talking the rich in life formula to
- 1:13Speaker 3: simplify your wardrobe. So this is a special bonus episode
- 1:18Speaker 3: in partnership with eBay on the soft habits that can
- 1:22Speaker 3: help you make some extra money because being rich in
- 1:25Speaker 3: life should be accessible to everyone and And you can
- 1:29Speaker 3: start in your very own home with the items.
- 1:31Speaker 4: You already own.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we love that. Exactly.
- 1:35Speaker 4: And who doesn't love a refresh, a declutter?
- 1:38Speaker 2: Especially spring.
- 1:39Speaker 4: A spring clean.
- 1:40Speaker 2: It's the perfect time for a spring clean.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 1:42Speaker 4: So let's get straight into it.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So part one, how.
- 1:46Speaker 1: A simplified wardrobe makes you rich in life. We've just
- 1:50Speaker 1: come back from Europe a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:53Speaker 2: And before we left, we were talking about our packing process.
- 1:57Speaker 1: And as two serial overpackers, we were kind of talking
- 2:01Speaker 1: about how if we aren't bothered getting that dress out
- 2:03Speaker 1: of the wardrobe, the chances are we won't wear it.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Like I think a lot of us will pack random
- 2:09Speaker 1: extra items on a trip, right? Just because you're like, oh,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I feel like I might need it. But if you
- 2:13Speaker 1: couldn't be bothered grabbing it, you're not going to wear it.
- 2:15Speaker 2: So when your clothes.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Shoes, accessories, and other items aren't aligning with your style
- 2:21Speaker 1: anymore and you're just not reaching for them, what do
- 2:23Speaker 1: you do? Firstly, it's probably worth a reminder that before
- 2:27Speaker 1: something goes in the discard pile, those items that aren't
- 2:31Speaker 1: your style anymore, it might just be somebody's new favorite find.
- 2:35Speaker 4: So we decided to put it in like a formula.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Time plus organization plus freedom equals rich in life. AKA
- 2:45Speaker 3: selling pre-loved items online can be a great way to
- 2:47Speaker 3: action this formula. And obviously a great platform to use
- 2:52Speaker 3: when parting with pre-loved items, whether it's clothes, shoes, household appliances, furniture.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Or books is eBay.
- 2:58Speaker 3: So eBay survey research found that one in three people
- 3:02Speaker 3: in Australia say that seller fees have deterred them from
- 3:05Speaker 3: listing items online. While 80% of us have unused items
- 3:09Speaker 3: at home that we could be selling.
- 3:12Speaker 4: 80%.
- 3:14Speaker 3: So let's lay out the numbers. The average household in
- 3:17Speaker 3: Australia is sitting on around 15 sellable items. Whoa. You
- 3:22Speaker 3: could make almost $ 1, 500 just by selling things around the
- 3:28Speaker 3: house that you no longer use. And like how good
- 3:32Speaker 3: would that be back in your bank account? Across the country,
- 3:36Speaker 3: that could add up to as much as.
- 3:38Speaker 4: $ 32 billion in untapped value.
- 3:43Speaker 2: It's a lot of moolah.
- 3:44Speaker 4: That is enough to get me off my ass and
- 3:46Speaker 4: onto eBay.
- 3:47Speaker 3: I'm not going to lie.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Yeah, seriously.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that figure alone.
- 3:51Speaker 1: And taking transaction fees out of the equation removes one
- 3:54Speaker 1: of those biggest barriers to selling that you mentioned before.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And now eBay has free selling and no transaction fees
- 4:00Speaker 1: on sales below $ 25, 000 annually. And there's also a new
- 4:05Speaker 1: in-app listing tool that's designed to make listing faster and
- 4:09Speaker 1: You just take a few pictures of what you want
- 4:10Speaker 1: to list and then the app does a lot of
- 4:13Speaker 1: the heavy lifting for you. Then you just go through,
- 4:15Speaker 1: review the information, make any changes that you want to
- 4:17Speaker 1: and voila, you're ready to go.
- 4:19Speaker 3: So let's chat about some of the pre-loved items around
- 4:22Speaker 3: your home that can bring you some extra value and
- 4:25Speaker 3: someone else's whole.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Lot of joy. So pre-loved.
- 4:29Speaker 3: I pulled together a list, some examples we found from
- 4:32Speaker 3: recent sold listings on eBay. Because I think half the
- 4:35Speaker 3: thing is you're like, no one.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Will want that. Yeah. But people actually do. Yeah.
- 4:41Speaker 3: As the saying goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Precisely.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Or as the Grinch says it, one man's trash is
- 4:47Speaker 3: another man's potpourri.
- 4:48Speaker 2: What's that? Some kind of soup.
- 4:50Speaker 4: You just had to finish.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I did.
- 4:52Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Otherwise, you would have been itchy for the.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Rest of the day.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I know.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I would have been in hives.
- 4:55Speaker 3: So old digital cameras around– these are all rough estimates,
- 4:59Speaker 3: by the way, not Bible. But old digital cameras, roughly $ 280.
- 5:03Speaker 1: iPods, $ 190.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Nintendo DS Lite, $ 195. I sold mine on eBay.
- 5:05Speaker 1: So good.
- 5:05Speaker 4: I kind of regret it though. I don't want to
- 5:07Speaker 4: buy it back. Buy it back. I'll buy it back
- 5:09Speaker 4: on eBay.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Okay. Graphing calculators, $ 200. Lego minifigures, $ 120. CD players, $ 120.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Dice and air wrap attachments and cases.
- 5:28Speaker 3: $ 50 to $ 70. That's also one that it's like you
- 5:31Speaker 3: wouldn't realize because there are some Dyson attachments that like.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Some people just never use.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And also the case, like I don't use the case
- 5:38Speaker 3: and I never even thought about selling that. Yeah. You know,
- 5:41Speaker 3: old gaming consoles can go between like $ 120 for $ 300.
- 5:46Speaker 3: discontinued perfume, like roughly $ 150.
- 5:50Speaker 4: To $ 250.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Like there's so many things that you don't realize you
- 5:56Speaker 3: can get good bang for your buck.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, so true.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I'm just thinking like through all of my stuff, like
- 6:01Speaker 1: I definitely have an unopened One Direction perfume sitting there,
- 6:05Speaker 1: old iPods just like sitting in a drawer, old phones even,
- 6:10Speaker 1: so much stuff that's just kind of collecting dust.
- 6:13Speaker 3: And rather than looking at it as like, stuff in
- 6:16Speaker 3: the junk drawer look at it as revenue exactly.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And something that somebody give it to somebody else give
- 6:22Speaker 2: it a.
- 6:22Speaker 3: New life obviously what something sells for like can vary
- 6:26Speaker 3: depending on the exact item model condition and demand so
- 6:29Speaker 3: these are just examples but you get the.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Idea this isn't just about selling those quality items that
- 6:34Speaker 1: you've been sitting on and never buying anything again because
- 6:39Speaker 1: we all get the shoppies from time to time don't
- 6:41Speaker 1: we I mean, we definitely do.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Time to time?
- 6:44Speaker 3: Time to time.
- 6:44Speaker 2: All the time. What is time? It is flat circle.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So if you happen to go from an eBay seller
- 6:51Speaker 1: to an eBay buyer, it's always worth keeping an eye
- 6:56Speaker 1: out because there are heaps of great finds being bought
- 6:59Speaker 1: on eBay like the Coach Tabby shoulder bag, the Alameus dresses,
- 7:04Speaker 1: heaps of collectibles like Stranger Things Lego sets.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Like you'd never really know what you might find on there.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:11Speaker 4: So part two, putting it into practice.
- 7:15Speaker 3: I know personally I can sometimes struggle with parting with things.
- 7:21Speaker 4: And like I definitely have been the person.
- 7:23Speaker 3: That's like, oh, but what if I want to wear
- 7:25Speaker 3: it to this one magical thing event that doesn't even
- 7:28Speaker 3: exist and it could exist. So we've actually kind of
- 7:32Speaker 3: put together some tips to follow that. To find items
- 7:35Speaker 3: that you do want to part with or to identify
- 7:37Speaker 3: maybe what's not serving you anymore, bringing you joy.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 3: So the would I buy it back test. This might
- 7:45Speaker 3: be my new favorite rule. Instead of asking, do I
- 7:50Speaker 3: still like this? Ask, if this disappeared from my house today,
- 7:54Speaker 3: would I spend money to buy it again?
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Completely changed my perspective.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Because there's a psychological phenomenon called the endowment effect. Basically,
- 8:05Speaker 3: we tend to place a higher value on something simply
- 8:07Speaker 3: because it's already ours, which explains why, like, you're currently
- 8:11Speaker 3: emotionally attached to a blazer you haven't worn since 2019.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:15Speaker 3: But there are so many things that have been like, oh, no,
- 8:17Speaker 3: I don't want to part with that. But I'm like,
- 8:20Speaker 3: but if I lost it, would I buy it again?
- 8:22Speaker 3: Would I replace it?
- 8:24Speaker 4: And the answer so often is no.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I don't know if, you know, that answer would be
- 8:28Speaker 3: yes for some of these things. Mentally, you remove ownership
- 8:32Speaker 3: from the equation. Would you go in store today and
- 8:34Speaker 3: buy it again?
- 8:36Speaker 1: No.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Potentially an eBay listing.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I really like that. Super helpful.
- 8:41Speaker 3: My other favorite one is to release yourself from the
- 8:45Speaker 3: future you fantasy.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Again, guilty. But I am very, kind of like what
- 8:50Speaker 4: I was saying, I'll wear this when. I'll need this if.
- 8:54Speaker 4: And if you've been waiting years for.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Like, an imaginary occasion or to finally do the hobby
- 9:00Speaker 3: that you've been saying you're going to do for, like,
- 9:02Speaker 3: the last three years, being like, no, I'm.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Going to knit.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:05Speaker 4: I'm going to sew.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I'm going to read every single book on my bookshelf,
- 9:09Speaker 3: whatever it is.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Like, this could also be helpful.
- 9:11Speaker 3: To make decisions when thinking about buying items off eBay.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Because look at the evidence.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Like, you know, if you've got seven trainers because you're like, no,
- 9:19Speaker 3: I'm going to go run and gym and lift weights
- 9:22Speaker 3: and all this stuff and– course you may keep one, but.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Do you need three?
- 9:26Speaker 3: Like what's the evidence that you have to back you?
- 9:28Speaker 3: Are you trying to build a fantasy of the future you?
- 9:32Speaker 4: Cause future you is you.
- 9:35Speaker 3: You're not going to just magically become someone different between
- 9:39Speaker 3: now and a year or three months time. So if
- 9:41Speaker 3: you're not doing it now, if you're not using that
- 9:43Speaker 3: thing now, are you going to be using it in
- 9:46Speaker 3: the future? Potentially be listing if not.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Another one is the if or but rule. So when
- 9:55Speaker 1: simplifying your closet, it's really easy to justify why you
- 9:58Speaker 1: need to keep something that you've been keeping in your
- 10:01Speaker 1: closet for years, kind of like you were saying. But
- 10:03Speaker 1: another trick that you can use is this if or
- 10:06Speaker 1: but rule. It can help you look past the excuses
- 10:09Speaker 1: or the overwhelm that a lot of us feel when
- 10:11Speaker 1: refining our wardrobes and letting go of some.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Of those old pieces.
- 10:14Speaker 3: So if.
- 10:16Speaker 1: How you do it is you hold up an item
- 10:18Speaker 1: from your wardrobe and ask yourself why you no longer
- 10:20Speaker 1: want it, using if and but to determine what you
- 10:24Speaker 1: don't like about it. For example, you might say you
- 10:27Speaker 1: like the style of the jacket, but you would prefer
- 10:30Speaker 1: if it was in a different color.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Or perhaps you'd like to wear a pair of shoes
- 10:34Speaker 2: like this if they didn't have such a high heel.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Anytime you find yourself using the words if or but
- 10:42Speaker 1: when contemplating a clothing piece, consider selling it or even
- 10:46Speaker 1: replacing it with an item that actually meets the criteria
- 10:49Speaker 1: that you would wear it.
- 10:50Speaker 3: I feel like that's a good rule to even use
- 10:52Speaker 3: when you're buying too. Yeah. You know, like so often
- 10:56Speaker 3: because we want the dopamine hit of buying something as well,
- 11:00Speaker 3: we will kind of lower our standards because we just
- 11:04Speaker 3: want the thing. Yeah.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so true.
- 11:07Speaker 1: It's like, oh, maybe if I do this to it,
- 11:11Speaker 1: then I will wear it. But it's like, are you
- 11:12Speaker 1: actually going to do that thing? Maybe, but I think
- 11:15Speaker 1: it's good to be honest with yourself. And it's worth
- 11:18Speaker 1: a reminder not to overdo it as well. Like that
- 11:21Speaker 1: can be really overwhelming. We're not saying you necessarily have
- 11:24Speaker 1: to go into your wardrobe and edit.
- 11:26Speaker 2: The whole thing.
- 11:27Speaker 1: It could even just be like, if you go to
- 11:30Speaker 1: pick up a blazer and you're like, I would wear
- 11:33Speaker 1: this if it was a little bit.
- 11:34Speaker 2: More oversized or if it was leather instead of a
- 11:36Speaker 2: pinstripe or whatever.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And if you find yourself saying those ifs and buts,
- 11:41Speaker 1: even in the moment, maybe be like, okay, I'll pop
- 11:44Speaker 1: that into the cell pile instead. And remember the formula
- 11:48Speaker 1: is about using your time wisely with the organization. So
- 11:52Speaker 1: make the first decision an easy one and once you
- 11:54Speaker 1: have your final sell pile, then.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Head to eBay. Yeah.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Also another quick little hack to do is like I
- 12:00Speaker 3: saw this ages ago and you turn all your coat
- 12:03Speaker 3: hangers one way and then when you wear something, you
- 12:06Speaker 3: turn them the opposite way and then at the end
- 12:08Speaker 3: of the year or the end of the month, whatever,
- 12:10Speaker 3: you can see all the ones that you haven't worn
- 12:14Speaker 3: versus the one you have.
- 12:15Speaker 4: And so it actually visually shows you, you don't reach
- 12:18Speaker 4: for this.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's such a good one.
- 12:22Speaker 3: But lastly, and most importantly, sell before you buy. So
- 12:28Speaker 3: it's always a good idea to check what you already
- 12:30Speaker 3: own before considering a new purchase. Like how many times
- 12:33Speaker 3: have we seen a cute skirt online or a pair
- 12:37Speaker 3: of jeans and wanting to buy it? Only to realize
- 12:40Speaker 3: we like really have a similar one hanging in our wardrobe.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Like I'm so guilty of that with blue jeans.
- 12:45Speaker 4: It's not even funny.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Yeah, dude. So eBay gives you a simpler way to
- 12:49Speaker 3: tackle this problem because you can list your common household
- 12:52Speaker 3: items and wardrobe pieces more easily. Your items become cash
- 12:55Speaker 3: that you can reinvest into yourself and your life for
- 12:58Speaker 3: the things that you actually want and will wear or
- 13:01Speaker 3: will use. So trust us chicks, you're already sitting on
- 13:04Speaker 3: the value items within your home and And those items
- 13:07Speaker 3: will be someone else's next best find. All it takes
- 13:10Speaker 3: is this formula to find them and sell them on eBay.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Well, that's a wrap on this episode.
- 13:16Speaker 1: But if you want any further information on listing your
- 13:19Speaker 1: next item on eBay, head to ebay.com.au.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Slash SL slash sell.
- 13:25Speaker 2: We'll put a link in the show notes. Thanks for
- 13:28Speaker 2: having us in Earholes Chickies.
- 13:30Speaker 4: We love to be here.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Bye.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Happy selling and bye.
