- 1:36Speaker 4: eight three zero four nine three five five zero zero
- 1:38Speaker 4: eight you can get through on the phone lines. I
- 1:41Speaker 4: believe three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight.
- 1:44Speaker 3: We are. We're in the process of moving students.
- 1:46Speaker 4: If you've listened to any of our shows recently, you
- 1:48Speaker 4: know that we have this huge move that's going on,
- 1:50Speaker 4: and last week late our phone lines had fallen through
- 1:53Speaker 4: that for this show, only the phone lines had fallen
- 1:56Speaker 4: through the cracks. A little bit where we have to
- 1:57Speaker 4: get them routed to the same studio. I believe that's resolved. However,
- 2:00Speaker 4: if you try to call this morning you can't get through,

- 2:12Speaker 4: So three zero four non three five five zeros zero
- 2:14Speaker 4: eight is our text on this morning. If you can't
- 2:16Speaker 4: get through on the phone line. Johnberdet is here for
- 2:19Speaker 4: Fourth Avenue Financial. We're almost through the election season now,
- 2:23Speaker 4: it's just kind of batten yeah, I know, right, just
- 2:25Speaker 4: batten down the hatches. My wife gets frustrated with me
- 2:28Speaker 4: because although I work in media, in news and stuff
- 2:30Speaker 4: like that, like I'm less and less aware of what's
- 2:34Speaker 4: going on politically as we get closer and closer to
- 2:37Speaker 4: the election. But I don't think that's such a bad place.
- 2:39Speaker 6: To be, Honestly, I don't think so. You know, I'm
- 2:42Speaker 6: getting calls all the time about the election, people thinking
- 2:46Speaker 6: should I sell out now?
- 2:47Speaker 5: Should I wait?
- 2:48Speaker 6: And you know, if you're thinking that the market is
- 2:53Speaker 6: thinking that too. Everybody that participates in the market is
- 2:56Speaker 6: thinking the same thing. You don't have a unique thought there, right,
- 3:00Speaker 6: and the markets at record has So that tells me
- 3:04Speaker 6: that the market's not too dog on concerned about the
- 3:06Speaker 6: election coming up in a few weeks, or we would
- 3:09Speaker 6: see that in the in the market prices.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean from from the at least from a
- 3:15Speaker 4: glance at all the indices and stuff that. I mean,
- 3:18Speaker 4: what are you so worried about? I mean, things are
- 3:20Speaker 4: pretty good.
- 3:21Speaker 6: Right now, and of course you know, we're not at
- 3:22Speaker 6: the end of the year, but we are on pace
- 3:26Speaker 6: now to have two years back to back twenty percent
- 3:29Speaker 6: plus gains, which you know, it happens, but it's it's
- 3:34Speaker 6: pretty good return for back to back years having those gains.
- 3:38Speaker 6: I will say this though, and most folks listening probably
- 3:41Speaker 6: don't realize this, but since nineteen fifty, forty percent of
- 3:47Speaker 6: all the years the market's been up twenty percent or greater.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Well really, yes, so wow, so the market.
- 3:57Speaker 6: What what folks don't realize is, oh, the market averages
- 3:59Speaker 6: tend to twelve percent a year something like that. It
- 4:02Speaker 6: doesn't do it in a straight line, you know, you
- 4:05Speaker 6: have all of these big years, and then you have
- 4:08Speaker 6: down years thrown in there, or low return years thrown
- 4:12Speaker 6: in there, and the average comes from those basically the
- 4:18Speaker 6: big years where the market runs wild. The vast majority
- 4:23Speaker 6: of the time, the market is never within a few
- 4:26Speaker 6: points of its long term average. It's always you know,
- 4:30Speaker 6: a hit or a miss. Essentially, I guess that makes sense.
- 4:33Speaker 4: I mean, anytime that you're looking with statistics, you know
- 4:35Speaker 4: how this thing, these things can work out. I mean
- 4:37Speaker 4: on a very very small scale, if you just look
- 4:40Speaker 4: at two things. If if you if you get a
- 4:42Speaker 4: forty percent increase on round number one and a zero
- 4:45Speaker 4: percent increase on round number two over two turns, that's
- 4:48Speaker 4: a twenty percent increase right on average. So I mean, yeah,
- 4:51Speaker 4: so I can see how that can. The long term
- 4:54Speaker 4: view is you have a certain consistent percentage. But in
- 4:56Speaker 4: the in the in the when you zoom in, you
- 4:58Speaker 4: do see some peaks and valleys that are in.
- 5:00Speaker 5: There right right.
- 5:01Speaker 6: So so in those years where you know, you ask, hey,
- 5:04Speaker 6: what do you think the market's going to do this year?
- 5:06Speaker 6: If you say, oh, probably ten percent, you know, well
- 5:09Speaker 6: you're just using the average. Long term chances are it's
- 5:14Speaker 6: not it's not going to be there. It's going to
- 5:15Speaker 6: be either much greater or less. And that's where that
- 5:19Speaker 6: average comes from. Very rarely are we right on the
- 5:21Speaker 6: money on that average.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Where does the kind of the panic? And I know
- 5:25Speaker 4: that we've been talking about this at least on the
- 5:27Speaker 4: outside looking in as far as election and headlines and
- 5:30Speaker 4: things like that, at least we touch on it often,
- 5:32Speaker 4: and we've talked about it several times leading up to
- 5:35Speaker 4: where we are now. But it's just it's what's in
- 5:37Speaker 4: the news right now. But when you say you have
- 5:39Speaker 4: some people that are that are contacting you wondering about
- 5:41Speaker 4: what they should do because of the election coming up,
- 5:43Speaker 4: what are the what are the I guess what's on
- 5:45Speaker 4: the on the menu as far as things that they
- 5:47Speaker 4: should do with Are they worried about their four one K?
- 5:49Speaker 4: About other types of investments? I'm not sure where the
- 5:52Speaker 4: where the panic would be built in at I mean,
- 5:54Speaker 4: what is it that you that that somebody wants to
- 5:56Speaker 4: change that's part of their investment strategy?
- 5:59Speaker 6: Well, I mean essentially safeguard their money. You know, the
- 6:03Speaker 6: fear of, oh, somebody's going to win the election that
- 6:05Speaker 6: I don't want to win the election, and that's going
- 6:08Speaker 6: to destroy everything. You know, history doesn't show that that
- 6:14Speaker 6: happens very often, and the market right now is signaling
- 6:18Speaker 6: that it doesn't believe it's going to happen this time either.
- 6:22Speaker 6: You know, the chances of you know, the market just
- 6:28Speaker 6: taking it in stride are historically pretty good.
- 6:33Speaker 4: The thing that I guess sort of, I don't know,
- 6:36Speaker 4: and I know things will work on a linear line
- 6:38Speaker 4: like this. But you look at the former president who's
- 6:40Speaker 4: running for office to get re elected. President Trump talked
- 6:44Speaker 4: about the stock market all the time while he was
- 6:46Speaker 4: in office, a little bit unusually because presidents usually.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Don't do that.
- 6:50Speaker 4: But it was good, so he talked about it all
- 6:51Speaker 4: the time, and whether the credit was deserved or not,
- 6:54Speaker 4: there was a good market during this time. Now we
- 6:56Speaker 4: at the end of his term, and in the beginning
- 6:58Speaker 4: of Joe Biden's term, of course, there was a COVID
- 7:00Speaker 4: depressions and stuff like that. But at the end of
- 7:02Speaker 4: this term now we see once again a very very
- 7:06Speaker 4: productive market that's setting all times hots. It looks to
- 7:08Speaker 4: me like that the evidence would suggest that regardless of
- 7:11Speaker 4: who won, ultimately the market is probably going to be okay.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Although it's terrorist that's running instead of Biden. The whole
- 7:18Speaker 4: parallel is supposedly it's a continuation of that presidency, right,
- 7:21Speaker 4: seems like that if it worked under one either either
- 7:24Speaker 4: time that we're probably going to be okay this time
- 7:26Speaker 4: around too. Now there's some different things in the headlines
- 7:28Speaker 4: with tariffs and different things along those lines.
- 7:30Speaker 6: But I think, you know, policy outcomes are a whole
- 7:35Speaker 6: lot different than the rhetoric that's being used during a campaign.
- 7:39Speaker 6: You know, you might a politician may say something in
- 7:42Speaker 6: a campaign, but actually turning that into policy or those
- 7:46Speaker 6: are two different things. And usually by the time the
- 7:49Speaker 6: sausage gets made, it's been influenced by lobbyist and who
- 7:54Speaker 6: are the lobbyist you know people and all these companies
- 7:57Speaker 6: right right right, And and what comes out at the
- 8:02Speaker 6: at at the end of the day is somewhat different than.
- 8:05Speaker 3: The rhetoric, if anything at all.
- 8:07Speaker 6: Sometimes that's correct. And if you look historically president being
- 8:14Speaker 6: a Democrat or Republican really doesn't influence the market that much.
- 8:20Speaker 6: As we've mentioned before, it's the market tends to perform
- 8:24Speaker 6: best when the government is divided. And why is that
- 8:28Speaker 6: because they can't do anything.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Red luck Baby's where that's where the profit's at.
- 8:34Speaker 6: And and you know, even if the policies are bad
- 8:37Speaker 6: or you don't like the policies, you know, companies know
- 8:40Speaker 6: what the policies are, know what they're going to be,
- 8:43Speaker 6: and can make plans around those.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I think that and ultimately what we always come back
- 8:48Speaker 4: to here is if you put the headline sort of
- 8:51Speaker 4: headline bsside and everything, and you just deal in on
- 8:54Speaker 4: what you can control, what you have agency over, as
- 8:57Speaker 4: as as someone who's working towards your retirement and who
- 9:00Speaker 4: is looking to retire. Right, if you do all the
- 9:02Speaker 4: things that you're supposed to do, chances are you're probably
- 9:04Speaker 4: going to be in pretty good shape, regardless of who's
- 9:07Speaker 4: at the top of a take her to the president
- 9:09Speaker 4: or anything else.
- 9:09Speaker 6: Well, just like I mean, use this last the past
- 9:12Speaker 6: election as an example. You know, if you're a Trump
- 9:16Speaker 6: fan and your guy lost and you sold out, you
- 9:21Speaker 6: didn't do too well, you missed out on the games,
- 9:25Speaker 6: and over the right number of years, that's that's going
- 9:28Speaker 6: to probably be the case most of the time. Because
- 9:32Speaker 6: the market finds higher highs you know, pretty regularly. It
- 9:35Speaker 6: doesn't in the last you know, forty plus years, it's
- 9:38Speaker 6: marched from one thousand to forty three thousand. There's a
- 9:41Speaker 6: lot of all time highs in that march.
- 9:43Speaker 3: There has to be right, and.
- 9:47Speaker 6: With what we said when we opened the show about
- 9:50Speaker 6: the twenty percent gains and how uneven those gains are,
- 9:55Speaker 6: the big risk there is you stay out and you
- 9:58Speaker 6: miss some of those big as because that's where those
- 10:01Speaker 6: long term averages come. You have to get those big
- 10:03Speaker 6: gains to average it out because not every year is
- 10:06Speaker 6: going to be that way, and if you missed the
- 10:08Speaker 6: wrong year, you know you really shot your opportunity to
- 10:11Speaker 6: grow your money.
- 10:12Speaker 4: So instead of being all that concerned about headlines or
- 10:16Speaker 4: something like that, double down on all of your steps,
- 10:17Speaker 4: whatever steps it is you need to do to be
- 10:19Speaker 4: a solvent investor, to make sure you're making the right decisions,
- 10:22Speaker 4: whether it's paying down debt or putting bonuses back into
- 10:25Speaker 4: do work for you, into some sort of investment where
- 10:27Speaker 4: you about those things, where about the things you have
- 10:29Speaker 4: agency over because largely you can cast your vote, that
- 10:31Speaker 4: you can donate money to presidential campaigns or to political campaigns.
- 10:36Speaker 4: You can go out and have your voice heard, but
- 10:38Speaker 4: ultimately there comes a point where there's not that much
- 10:40Speaker 4: you can do about it, and you can take agency
- 10:42Speaker 4: over the things that you do have control over.
- 10:44Speaker 6: Yeah, some things you've got to You've got to take
- 10:46Speaker 6: care of yourself. Those folks in Washington aren't going to
- 10:48Speaker 6: do it for you.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 4: And don't put them first, you know, no matter what
- 10:52Speaker 4: they say, they're not putting you first. You put yourself
- 10:55Speaker 4: in your family first, and then figure it out from there.
- 10:57Speaker 4: That's I think that's where the keys come from. Texas
- 11:00Speaker 4: this morning three zero four nine three five five zero
- 11:02Speaker 4: zero eight three zero four nine three five five zero
- 11:03Speaker 4: zero eight. If you have any questions for John Bredet
- 11:05Speaker 4: from Fourth Avenue Financial, you can give us a call.
- 11:07Speaker 4: I think three zero four three four five fifty eight fifteen.
- 11:09Speaker 4: And I'm sorry for that. We're waiting for the resolution
- 11:12Speaker 4: to come through on some change of our phone lines
- 11:15Speaker 4: to get them back over to the right place. It
- 11:17Speaker 4: was going to happen later over the weekend, and I'm
- 11:20Speaker 4: not I didn't get confirmation if it did or not,
- 11:22Speaker 4: so you may not be able to get through on
- 11:24Speaker 4: this show this morning at three zero four three four
- 11:26Speaker 4: five fifty eight fifty eight. If that is the case,
- 11:28Speaker 4: on the next show coming up, the studio re arrangement
- 11:30Speaker 4: will get us back into line and everything works. Okay,
- 11:32Speaker 4: it's just kind of an odd moment here this morning,
- 11:34Speaker 4: but you can definitely get through on the text line
- 11:35Speaker 4: three zero four nine three five five zero zero eight.
- 11:38Speaker 4: You can find out more about John bre Dad and
- 11:39Speaker 4: Fourth Avenue Financial on line. It's fourth Avenue Financial dot Com.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Fourth Avenue Financial was spelled out fourth Avenue Financial dot Com.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Also on Facebook. You can do that search and like
- 11:48Speaker 4: the page over there to be kept up to date
- 11:49Speaker 4: on all the things that's going on. Located at one
- 11:51Speaker 4: seventy Court Street in downtown Charleston. I'll get your rest
- 11:53Speaker 4: of the contact information as we go along here today.
- 11:57Speaker 4: So we are coming towards the end of the year,
- 11:59Speaker 4: and we've talked about you know, calendar months are are
- 12:02Speaker 4: you get a lot of paperwork. You know, you get
- 12:04Speaker 4: a lot of end of the year paperwork, which is
- 12:06Speaker 4: important and you can follow away make sure you.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Do things with it.
- 12:08Speaker 4: But there isn't necessarily a laundry list of things you
- 12:11Speaker 4: need to do other than making sure you're you're you
- 12:14Speaker 4: take things out of taxes, you need to remove thing
- 12:16Speaker 4: you have, all the procedural things you have to do
- 12:18Speaker 4: towards the end of the year. But there's not any
- 12:20Speaker 4: major recasting or anything major like that as far as
- 12:22Speaker 4: from your investment strategy goes. You just have to maybe
- 12:25Speaker 4: stick your head up and take a look, appraise the situation.
- 12:27Speaker 4: And that's a good a good time to call John Burdett.
- 12:29Speaker 4: You know, every so often you might need a retuning
- 12:31Speaker 4: or take a look at what you're looking at make
- 12:33Speaker 4: sure your strategies are okay. Maybe not a terrible time
- 12:35Speaker 4: to do that if you haven't taken a look at
- 12:37Speaker 4: things for a lot well.
- 12:38Speaker 6: There can be opportunities towards the end of the year
- 12:41Speaker 6: to maybe minimize your taxes through some tax law selling.
- 12:44Speaker 6: If you have some stocks that have not done well,
- 12:48Speaker 6: go ahead and offload them before the end of the
- 12:50Speaker 6: year and take the take the tax break on. It'll
- 12:52Speaker 6: offset some of the gains that maybe you've had in
- 12:55Speaker 6: the good year we've we've had this year, and you
- 12:59Speaker 6: rather do that then you know, way to take it
- 13:02Speaker 6: in a year where you don't have fax liability. So
- 13:04Speaker 6: you know, those are some small things that you can
- 13:06Speaker 6: do inside your portfolio. But uh, but really you know,
- 13:11Speaker 6: at this stage, for me, what I'm hearing most there
- 13:15Speaker 6: is just concern over over the election. And if that
- 13:19Speaker 6: is the case, if you're having that and and it's
- 13:22Speaker 6: clouding your finances, definitely give us a call. You know,
- 13:26Speaker 6: we'll set down and we can review your strategy, make
- 13:29Speaker 6: sure that you are in the right places for your
- 13:32Speaker 6: stage of life, and and hopefully I offer some perspective
- 13:36Speaker 6: and some advice on how to how to get through
- 13:39Speaker 6: it and stay the course. And and like you, like
- 13:41Speaker 6: you just mentioned, focus on the things that you can control.
- 13:46Speaker 6: And I think that you know, that's ultimately what what
- 13:52Speaker 6: decides success. It's not external events, it's it's internally what
- 13:56Speaker 6: what you're doing and the decisions that you make.
- 14:00Speaker 4: And this might be my fault. I pushed it a
- 14:02Speaker 4: little hard. What John just said there, I think is
- 14:04Speaker 4: really important in that sometimes, like if we're talking about
- 14:10Speaker 4: different different reasons that you shouldn't be concerned. You know,
- 14:12Speaker 4: I don't worry about the headlines too much things like that.
- 14:14Speaker 4: That doesn't mean that in asking the question that you
- 14:16Speaker 4: may not find an issue somewhere. It may not be
- 14:18Speaker 4: related to who's going to win the presidency, but the
- 14:22Speaker 4: curiosity of hey, maybe I should take a look at
- 14:24Speaker 4: this thing because of this could spur you to find
- 14:26Speaker 4: other issues or opportunities in your portfolio and something that's
- 14:31Speaker 4: worth taking a look at. So if you have a
- 14:32Speaker 4: little bit of a question, that doesn't mean hey Coop
- 14:34Speaker 4: said on the radio, that shouldn't panic so much.
- 14:36Speaker 3: No, look, it doesn't hurt to look.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Just don't make any massive changes based on the mood
- 14:42Speaker 4: of the headlines that you're reading.
- 14:44Speaker 6: Right right, No ration movements. So if you're going to
- 14:46Speaker 6: make some changes, make sure that they fit, they fit
- 14:49Speaker 6: you at your situation, not the external world that's going
- 14:54Speaker 6: on around us that we don't control.
- 14:56Speaker 4: Now, it's really important information to make sure that you
- 15:00Speaker 4: you are able to understand that and to deploy it properly.
- 15:03Speaker 4: And that's why fourth avenue Financial and job. But it
- 15:05Speaker 4: can help out so much with that if you're out
- 15:06Speaker 4: there and you've been kind of flying without a net
- 15:09Speaker 4: when it comes to your retirement and for your retirement
- 15:11Speaker 4: income and how you can retire right, this is a
- 15:13Speaker 4: great opportunity to take some of the some of the
- 15:15Speaker 4: unknowns off of the table, give yourself some extra confidence
- 15:18Speaker 4: and going into your years where you want to be
- 15:21Speaker 4: earning and putting money away for retirement, making sure you're
- 15:23Speaker 4: doing it the right way. You can have a financial

- 18:43Speaker 4: We talked about the election a little bit in the
- 18:44Speaker 4: first segment, but Halloween is right around the corner. I
- 18:46Speaker 4: can't believe it. John Burdad is here from Fourth Avenue Financial.
- 18:49Speaker 4: You don't want the season to be scary for you

- 18:59Speaker 3: Five zeros you eight.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Last couple of weeks, you've been talking to me a
- 19:02Speaker 4: little bit about an idea that you've had off air,
- 19:06Speaker 4: and at least what we were just talking about, it
- 19:08Speaker 4: sounds like you might be about ready to uh. The
- 19:11Speaker 4: concept is out there you're you're coming up with some days,
- 19:13Speaker 4: but you have a pretty nice idea for maybe a
- 19:15Speaker 4: little a little weekend club or meeting when it comes
- 19:18Speaker 4: to UH to finances and so forth.
- 19:21Speaker 6: Yes, I've been kicking around a little bit and we're
- 19:23Speaker 6: pretty close to uh picking some dates. But as you know,
- 19:28Speaker 6: if you've listened to the show, my wife opened up
- 19:31Speaker 6: Vintage Advice Mercantile down at South Charleston. It's antique mall,
- 19:35Speaker 6: vintage shops, and in the upstairs there's a kind of
- 19:42Speaker 6: a community room, a meeting, a meeting area, and so
- 19:46Speaker 6: I'm thinking that maybe Saturday mornings could be once a
- 19:51Speaker 6: month we pick a date and just have a get together.
- 19:54Speaker 6: I'll be up there. People can ask questions, you know,
- 19:57Speaker 6: I'll have a topic, but it can go anywhere that
- 19:59Speaker 6: the that the folks want to go, you know, a
- 20:03Speaker 6: small group eight, ten, twelve people and just answer all
- 20:08Speaker 6: your questions, meet face to face, have a little bit
- 20:11Speaker 6: of coffee and donuts, and see where it takes us.
- 20:14Speaker 4: I love ideas like this because as we've gotten farther
- 20:17Speaker 4: and farther into I mean our current present, but at
- 20:21Speaker 4: one time our future, this type of personal contact is
- 20:25Speaker 4: and I know, you like to talk to people on phone,
- 20:26Speaker 4: you meet with people all the time and things like that.
- 20:28Speaker 4: But when it comes to we don't have a lot
- 20:31Speaker 4: of things like this, like meetings of like minded individuals.
- 20:34Speaker 4: I mean you see it from time to time still,
- 20:36Speaker 4: you know, but that used to be a thing, even
- 20:37Speaker 4: when I was younger. You know, the guys that would
- 20:40Speaker 4: meet for breakfast and it was maybe sometimes unofficial, but
- 20:43Speaker 4: there would be a group of guys that would meet
- 20:44Speaker 4: for breakfast every morning and they would talk about the
- 20:46Speaker 4: events of the day or whatever break up. Right, you know,
- 20:48Speaker 4: There's not a lot of that anymore.
- 20:50Speaker 6: And that's what I'm envisioning this as not really a
- 20:53Speaker 6: seminar or a workshop, just basically, hey, let's get together.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Well you know, what do you have on your mind,
- 21:00Speaker 6: Let's talk about it. Uh, you know, market marke largely
- 21:04Speaker 6: market related hopefully, sure, but hey, I can talk about
- 21:07Speaker 6: a lot of things.
- 21:07Speaker 4: When uh when when you first brought it up to me,
- 21:10Speaker 4: And I'm such a huge Slock Holmes fans, I kept
- 21:13Speaker 4: on thinking of Microft Holmes, Sherlock's brother who always hung
- 21:16Speaker 4: out of the Diogenes Club. You know, that was a
- 21:17Speaker 4: place where the movers and Shakers, government business took place
- 21:20Speaker 4: and things like that, and you always had to go
- 21:22Speaker 4: in and present your business card and then he would
- 21:24Speaker 4: hold audience. Not that it is anything like that, but
- 21:26Speaker 4: it was. It was a place where in fiction, it
- 21:28Speaker 4: was a place that reflected real life, where people met
- 21:31Speaker 4: and uh, you know, there was intellectual curiosity that was
- 21:34Speaker 4: that was exchanged and things like that. It's a good
- 21:36Speaker 4: idea to put people together and they could be from
- 21:40Speaker 4: different parts of life, you know, from different stages of
- 21:42Speaker 4: their of their retirement, different uh, different amount of wealth
- 21:45Speaker 4: that goes into it and wealth creation. And you not
- 21:48Speaker 4: only are able to kind of help each person individually,
- 21:50Speaker 4: but the uh, but the collective unit you know, can
- 21:53Speaker 4: a lot of times surface a great information and and
- 21:55Speaker 4: uh and advice and stuff like that.
- 21:57Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I know doubt about it and uh uh
- 22:01Speaker 6: when I picked the dates. What I'm going to do
- 22:03Speaker 6: is set it up as a Facebook event. So if
- 22:07Speaker 6: you're on Facebook, certainly go to our page fourth Avenue
- 22:11Speaker 6: Financial and like the page so you'll be notified when
- 22:14Speaker 6: we set that event up for the first time. And
- 22:19Speaker 6: then from there that's where you'll find it.
- 22:21Speaker 4: So there you go, you go to Facebook, you do
- 22:23Speaker 4: a search for Fourth Avenue. Financially you spell out the
- 22:25Speaker 4: whole thing. You can find John's page there. You can,
- 22:27Speaker 4: like it be notified when one of these one of
- 22:30Speaker 4: these meetings come about. That's a great idea, and I
- 22:32Speaker 4: can keep you up to date on when these are
- 22:34Speaker 4: going to happen. It would be a great opportunity to
- 22:36Speaker 4: to you know, if there's a lot of questions about
- 22:38Speaker 4: particular topics, you're be able to use those and bring
- 22:40Speaker 4: them back to the show and do a piece on them.
- 22:43Speaker 4: If there's some questions you need to get out or
- 22:45Speaker 4: something like that, or get you get kind of an
- 22:47Speaker 4: idea from multiple people that hey, there's a lot of
- 22:49Speaker 4: people that have questions about whatever this topic might be today.
- 22:52Speaker 4: It's a great it's a great way to kind of
- 22:54Speaker 4: get the pulse of what people are thinking as well.
- 22:55Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, no doubt about it. I'm kind of looking
- 22:57Speaker 6: forward to it. I used to do a few things
- 23:00Speaker 6: like this before before COVID and haven't really gotten back
- 23:04Speaker 6: into the routine. So this is a this is a
- 23:06Speaker 6: good opportunity to use the use the space down at
- 23:09Speaker 6: the Wife Shop and that's free down there.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Hey see, that's that's the right way to do it.
- 23:16Speaker 4: You can still text us be forty three zero four
- 23:18Speaker 4: none three five five zero zero eight three zero four
- 23:20Speaker 4: none three five five zerears zero eight or to call
- 23:22Speaker 4: three zero four three four five fifty fifteen. If you
- 23:24Speaker 4: have any questions for John, if you're interested in one
- 23:25Speaker 4: of these meetings that John's talking about that he's going
- 23:29Speaker 4: to be holding on the weekend's coming up, just go
- 23:31Speaker 4: to the Facebook page fourth Avenue Financial like the page,
- 23:33Speaker 4: and then you'll get notifications when things come across there.
- 23:36Speaker 4: You do one of those things now where you like
- 23:38Speaker 4: at all all followers or whatever, you know, you can
- 23:40Speaker 4: do that, right, Like, I never do that because I
- 23:43Speaker 4: have like six people that follow me.
- 23:44Speaker 3: What I'm going to do it for?
- 23:45Speaker 4: But ever so, you know, I guess that from what
- 23:46Speaker 4: he woulds all the time announcing to all of his
- 23:49Speaker 4: followers the stuff that's going on the weekends, that's a useful,
- 23:51Speaker 4: useful thing, right.
- 23:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:52Speaker 6: I'll have to out learn all the all the technology
- 23:55Speaker 6: and the lingo.
- 23:56Speaker 5: I'm a little behind of that stuff.
- 23:58Speaker 4: I hate to admit, but I am too. As far
- 23:59Speaker 4: as there's a lot of this stuff that they're like
- 24:01Speaker 4: rolled out on Facebook and things I don't.
- 24:03Speaker 5: Know, speaking of old school. After after our meeting there
- 24:05Speaker 5: at the shop.
- 24:06Speaker 6: We can then wonder down to the records and you know,
- 24:09Speaker 6: proise the records and talk about music too.
- 24:12Speaker 4: That's a finance and music. There's got to be some
- 24:14Speaker 4: way that we can relate those things.
- 24:15Speaker 5: You know, maybe there's plenty of lyrics we can go to.
- 24:17Speaker 3: We should do a.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Whole show where we marry like a concept with a
- 24:20Speaker 4: song and we can play a little of this song
- 24:21Speaker 4: and then talk about the concept.
- 24:22Speaker 3: That might be fun to do.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Yeah, high production quality there.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, if you come up with if you
- 24:27Speaker 4: come up with the relationships, I'll come up with the production,
- 24:30Speaker 4: you know, and and we'll make it work.
- 24:33Speaker 3: As far as those things that go.
- 24:34Speaker 4: Once again, you can text us morning three zero four
- 24:35Speaker 4: nine three five five zers or eight three zero four
- 24:37Speaker 4: nine three five five zers er eight. So if you
- 24:39Speaker 4: are we we talked a little bit last week about
- 24:43Speaker 4: somebody who may be looking to u start down the
- 24:48Speaker 4: financial awareness path, like maybe they haven't had they haven't
- 24:52Speaker 4: had a had an advisor, they've or it's been underutilized.
- 24:56Speaker 4: But that is something that you may find yourself in
- 24:59Speaker 4: a situation where you live somewhere else or maybe your
- 25:03Speaker 4: relationship people retire out and maybe you don't have someone
- 25:07Speaker 4: actively managing a portfolio or something like that. This is
- 25:09Speaker 4: also something that you can help with because it's very
- 25:11Speaker 4: easy to take over those types of things as somebody
- 25:14Speaker 4: is looking to move management of their retirement funds or
- 25:16Speaker 4: something like that.
- 25:18Speaker 6: Yes, I mean there's certainly a you know, a lot
- 25:23Speaker 6: of folks think, oh, there's a lot of red tape
- 25:25Speaker 6: and moving money around, and that's really not the case anymore.
- 25:29Speaker 6: I mean, any brokerage business is there's a kind of
- 25:34Speaker 6: a standard in the industry. It's just some papers that
- 25:38Speaker 6: sign a couple of papers and it transfers over to
- 25:41Speaker 6: the new brokerage. You don't have to sell your investments necessarily.
- 25:45Speaker 6: They can even move in kind. So if you own
- 25:47Speaker 6: a particular portfolio or a particular stock that you don't
- 25:51Speaker 6: really want to sell, the stock doesn't sell. It just
- 25:54Speaker 6: appears in the new brokerage account at the new firm.
- 25:57Speaker 6: So it's very seamless to do that these days.
- 26:01Speaker 4: And if you have questions ask I've mentioned on the
- 26:03Speaker 4: show before, and I think that it's really just a
- 26:04Speaker 4: symptom of it being you know, it's like back in
- 26:06Speaker 4: the nineties, and the job that I had didn't have
- 26:10Speaker 4: a great I did have a great HR relationship where
- 26:14Speaker 4: it gave you options on things that you had. Like
- 26:16Speaker 4: I had a job that you know, they contributed four
- 26:18Speaker 4: one k. I had a four oh one k with them.
- 26:19Speaker 4: But when I when I not only resigned my job
- 26:23Speaker 4: but changed states, you know, I was completely leaving. You know,
- 26:26Speaker 4: I was a relatively young guy. I was in my
- 26:27Speaker 4: early twenties, and and I thought, well, I need the
- 26:31Speaker 4: I can't keep this money here. I'm not going to
- 26:32Speaker 4: be in Michigan anymore doing this. I better cash out everything.
- 26:35Speaker 4: And so, you know, that was like a huge mistake.
- 26:37Speaker 4: And at no point along the way did I really
- 26:40Speaker 4: have anybody be like, are you sure you want.
- 26:41Speaker 3: To do this?
- 26:42Speaker 4: Because I mean they might. They've told me, probably the
- 26:44Speaker 4: penalties and stuff I was going to to face, but
- 26:46Speaker 4: never was there, don't you want to do X?
- 26:49Speaker 3: Instead? Wouldn't you like to do this and then you
- 26:51Speaker 3: could keep your money?
- 26:51Speaker 4: Like nobody ever told me that, Like I didn't know,
- 26:54Speaker 4: you know, And sure it was it's ultimately my responsibility.
- 26:57Speaker 4: I take full responsibility for it. But at the same time,
- 26:59Speaker 4: I feel like that they were there's more levers in
- 27:01Speaker 4: place now if somebody is looking to make that kind
- 27:03Speaker 4: of mistake that you have to pull more of those
- 27:05Speaker 4: levers before you can do it right.
- 27:07Speaker 6: Well, you know, to today there are disclosures because there's
- 27:11Speaker 6: something called a special tax notice, and that's a that's
- 27:14Speaker 6: a form that's supposed to address the problem that you
- 27:17Speaker 6: had years ago exactly. And and you know, I can
- 27:20Speaker 6: tell you everyone.
- 27:21Speaker 5: Reads that for them, Yes, I'm sure they do. You know, six.
- 27:25Speaker 6: Pages of legally's that that tells you what the what
- 27:28Speaker 6: the implications of every decision are. So you know, sometimes
- 27:31Speaker 6: it's better just to pick up the phone and say, hey,
- 27:34Speaker 6: this is my situation.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Can you help me with that?
- 27:37Speaker 3: Right?
- 27:37Speaker 4: And we'll walk you right through it, And a lot
- 27:39Speaker 4: of times somebody will will get you in there. You
- 27:41Speaker 4: just don't want to make silly mistakes that you making
- 27:44Speaker 4: an extra phone call or or reading an extra piece
- 27:47Speaker 4: of paper, doing an extra bit of research something is
- 27:50Speaker 4: going to keep you from making a huge mistake. You
- 27:51Speaker 4: want to you want to be very measured in these
- 27:53Speaker 4: types of things, especially when you're talking about uh money
- 27:56Speaker 4: that you have invested and penalties, taxes, things along those lines.
- 27:59Speaker 3: There's ways that you can protect yourself. You just have
- 28:01Speaker 3: to ask.
- 28:02Speaker 6: And when it comes to transferring the money, Let's say
- 28:04Speaker 6: you you separated employment and you're willing to roll over
- 28:07Speaker 6: an old retirement plan into an individual IRA that we
- 28:11Speaker 6: manage for you.
- 28:12Speaker 5: You know, we'll hop on the.
- 28:13Speaker 6: Phone with you and help you get that money transferred
- 28:17Speaker 6: properly so there are no tax penalties with that.
- 28:21Speaker 3: You know.
- 28:21Speaker 6: Essentially, we'll call in together on a on a speaker
- 28:25Speaker 6: or a conference call. The I'll tell them on the
- 28:30Speaker 6: other end of the at the investment company, h who
- 28:33Speaker 6: I am, and that I'm with the client. They'll ask
- 28:36Speaker 6: the client to identify themselves and and get them authorized
- 28:41Speaker 6: and ask if permission to speak with me on the line,
- 28:45Speaker 6: and then I'll take it from there. You know, I'll
- 28:47Speaker 6: make sure that the check gets payable to the right
- 28:50Speaker 6: place so that so that you know, there are no
- 28:53Speaker 6: tax penalties, uh, you know, it goes directly to the
- 28:56Speaker 6: new custodium that sort of thing. You know, we'll walk
- 28:59Speaker 6: you right through that, actually be on the phone with
- 29:02Speaker 6: you in that process.
- 29:04Speaker 4: And that would be a huge benefit to somebody who
- 29:06Speaker 4: you know, you're unsure. I mean, if you're like me,
- 29:08Speaker 4: you might even read these things and like you sort
- 29:10Speaker 4: of understand them, but it really helps when you have
- 29:11Speaker 4: somebody with you that can kind of walk you through
- 29:13Speaker 4: things turnstile wise to make sure you're making the right decision.
- 29:15Speaker 6: I means you know, when you think about or how
- 29:17Speaker 6: many times in life do you do you do that
- 29:19Speaker 6: right once?
- 29:20Speaker 5: Twice?
- 29:20Speaker 6: Maybe we do it every day, So it's very for
- 29:25Speaker 6: sure of how to do it, so so that takes
- 29:29Speaker 6: the guests work completely out of it.
- 29:30Speaker 4: Yeah, having that, having that level of confidence that's going
- 29:32Speaker 4: to help you out is something that is really is
- 29:35Speaker 4: really invaluable. So that you can find out more about

- 29:48Speaker 4: can text us this morning at three zero four non
- 29:49Speaker 4: three five five zero zero eighth. This might be more
- 29:51Speaker 4: something that we stretch out for in a longer show.
- 29:54Speaker 4: But one of the things that I was looking through
- 29:56Speaker 4: some data where I used to own some businesses and stuff.
- 29:58Speaker 4: I still still have all of newsletters and different things
- 30:01Speaker 4: like that that comes in and one of the trends
- 30:03Speaker 4: that's been happening when it comes to we've seen record
- 30:06Speaker 4: numbers of people opening up their own business quote unquote
- 30:09Speaker 4: opening up their own business. But what the trends have
- 30:12Speaker 4: shown is that these businesses are becoming less and less
- 30:14Speaker 4: like brick and mortar establishments and stuff like that. Like
- 30:16Speaker 4: the businesses I ran were brick and mortar establishments where
- 30:18Speaker 4: I had to put the whole thing together. So many
- 30:20Speaker 4: people now are running businesses out of their house. They're
- 30:22Speaker 4: doing like the cottage kitchen thing.
- 30:23Speaker 3: They're like.
- 30:26Speaker 4: They're drivers, or they're coming up with some kind of
- 30:28Speaker 4: interesting concept as far as that goes.
- 30:30Speaker 3: But if you were.
- 30:31Speaker 4: Someone like what I used to do, Like you know,
- 30:33Speaker 4: I opened up brick and mortar businesses, I had w
- 30:35Speaker 4: two employees. You know, I did the whole thing. You
- 30:37Speaker 4: can as even as a small business go through Fourth
- 30:40Speaker 4: Avenue Financial to create investment Form one K opportunities and
- 30:45Speaker 4: so forth, free employees. You can put together those types
- 30:47Speaker 4: of things if you're looking to put your business together
- 30:49Speaker 4: properly and offer benefits and so forth.
- 30:52Speaker 6: Absolutely, and it doesn't even have to be a four
- 30:55Speaker 6: oh one K a four oh one k. You know,
- 30:58Speaker 6: you have to be I think at a certain stage
- 31:01Speaker 6: before that makes sense because of some of the expenses
- 31:03Speaker 6: I involved in the filings you have to do. But
- 31:07Speaker 6: a small business, I mean, especially if you're an individual,
- 31:10Speaker 6: you know, a sep ira simple iras, there are lots
- 31:15Speaker 6: of different avenues that you have and will help you
- 31:18Speaker 6: evaluate your situation and decide which direction makes the most
- 31:21Speaker 6: sense for you and so you can maximize I mean,
- 31:25Speaker 6: why do you start that business you started so that
- 31:28Speaker 6: when you have a living and you can take care of.
- 31:30Speaker 5: Yourself and your family.
- 31:32Speaker 6: A big part of that is making sure you're you're
- 31:34Speaker 6: taking care of your future and you're in you know,
- 31:36Speaker 6: don't neglect just because you're working on your own. Don't
- 31:40Speaker 6: neglect saving for for your future, like like you would
- 31:43Speaker 6: be if you are employed somewhere participating in the retirement plan.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:47Speaker 4: I have to say that as someone who's who's been
- 31:49Speaker 4: through that that there's a couple of things that goes
- 31:51Speaker 4: on there. Number one, being able to offer that sort
- 31:53Speaker 4: of a benefit as a small business is a huge
- 31:55Speaker 4: advantage because not a lot of them doing it anymore.
- 31:56Speaker 4: And so if you're competing in that space, that actually
- 31:59Speaker 4: comes out very good. And another thing sometimes it sort
- 32:02Speaker 4: of helps to be forced to walk the walk, so
- 32:05Speaker 4: it kind of gets you into line. And when you
- 32:06Speaker 4: start doing things like that, and there's a lot more
- 32:09Speaker 4: you have to be a lot more strict with yourself
- 32:11Speaker 4: to make sure that you're have everything in place, that
- 32:13Speaker 4: that you're financially responsible for your company, that you're putting
- 32:16Speaker 4: in the right way. Those things a lot of times
- 32:18Speaker 4: will teach you to teach you good behavior anyway. You know,
- 32:20Speaker 4: it's not a bad thing to do to have those
- 32:21Speaker 4: benefits and different things like that, because I guess it
- 32:23Speaker 4: gets you more in a business frame of mind. You know,
- 32:25Speaker 4: you're you're administrating these things as the owner of the company,
- 32:29Speaker 4: putting it together. It just keeps you more focused a
- 32:31Speaker 4: lot of the times, at least that's what I found.
- 32:33Speaker 6: Yeah, and you see and as you see that number
- 32:35Speaker 6: grow and you see the progress you're making, it it
- 32:38Speaker 6: might help you realize all the hard work you're putting
- 32:40Speaker 6: in is amounting to something. You know that you're making progress.
- 32:45Speaker 6: It's kind of a scorecard and in a.
- 32:47Speaker 4: Sense, yeah, and I just I see all of these
- 32:51Speaker 4: numbers and it's been amazing. You know, people opened up
- 32:53Speaker 4: all kinds of businesses during COVID when the people were
- 32:56Speaker 4: getting money and they were using those to start little collagechumbs.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Now a lot of them have closed already as well.
- 33:00Speaker 4: I mean that we we knew that was going to happen.
- 33:02Speaker 6: You know that that's one thing about this country. And
- 33:05Speaker 6: I think that that is a little bit unique every individual. Uh,
- 33:10Speaker 6: you know, they really can if they choose to come
- 33:14Speaker 6: up with some creative things. I was talking to somebody,
- 33:17Speaker 6: uh coming back from Florida while back, and uh, they
- 33:22Speaker 6: created a business traveling on an air airplane's taking older
- 33:28Speaker 6: folks from up north, you know, to down south, the snowbirds,
- 33:33Speaker 6: you know, just a travel companion. Like they're getting paid
- 33:38Speaker 6: to to to travel make sure that you know, mom
- 33:42Speaker 6: or dad gets to where they need to be and
- 33:44Speaker 6: that the luggage gets where it needs to be. And
- 33:46Speaker 6: and uh, you know, made a whole business of it.
- 33:48Speaker 6: And so this person gets to go see the world
- 33:51Speaker 6: and makes a living. And you know they just came
- 33:54Speaker 6: up with us, uh, you know, on their own. That's
- 33:57Speaker 6: a that's you know, it's a really good opportunity. Yeah,
- 34:00Speaker 6: and little niches anywhere, you know, And and I think COVID, you.
- 34:04Speaker 5: Know, brought that out in a lot of folks.
- 34:06Speaker 4: Yeah, a lot of people gave it the opportunity where
- 34:08Speaker 4: you know, they may have been laid off in prayer
- 34:11Speaker 4: from a job, or they got funds they weren't used
- 34:13Speaker 4: to happening or something like that allowed them to have
- 34:15Speaker 4: well disposed income to take a chance for taking investment.
- 34:17Speaker 4: I mean, it's not it wasn't a bad thing because
- 34:20Speaker 4: some things came through the other side of that and
- 34:21Speaker 4: have worked and people have found their niches.
- 34:23Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, no doubt about it.
- 34:24Speaker 6: And like I say, I think that's a big part
- 34:26Speaker 6: of why this country bounced back from COVID much faster
- 34:30Speaker 6: than than you know, places around the world that that
- 34:35Speaker 6: paid people to stay in place, and we didn't really
- 34:41Speaker 6: ensure that people would have their same jobs back. You know,
- 34:44Speaker 6: we helped financially to get them through, but we didn't
- 34:48Speaker 6: require the employer. You know, we paid the individual, not
- 34:51Speaker 6: the employer essentially.
- 34:53Speaker 4: And people kind of reshuffled themselves. There was a lot
- 34:54Speaker 4: of reshuffling during that time, and a lot of people
- 34:57Speaker 4: came out on the other side a little a little
- 34:58Speaker 4: bit better.
- 34:58Speaker 6: Our economy tends to be, you know, very dynamic that way.
- 35:03Speaker 4: There was this lady that I met in my travels.
- 35:05Speaker 4: This is when I was at equit where she was
- 35:06Speaker 4: a Canadian by birth but had lived a lot in
- 35:09Speaker 4: the United States, and she swore up and down she
- 35:11Speaker 4: said that every including living overseas like in Paris. She
- 35:15Speaker 4: swore up and down that she could go to any
- 35:17Speaker 4: city and live there just by opening up a dog
- 35:20Speaker 4: walking service. That was her thing. She said that then.
- 35:22Speaker 4: Now this was in two thousand and nine, so this
- 35:25Speaker 4: was like two thousand and non finances, not twenty twenty
- 35:27Speaker 4: four finances. But she claimed that she could go to Paris, London,
- 35:30Speaker 4: New York, San Francisco, wherever, and it would take her
- 35:32Speaker 4: a relatively short amount of time to set up enough
- 35:35Speaker 4: people where she could go and take care of their
- 35:37Speaker 4: dogs and do dog walking and stuff where she could
- 35:39Speaker 4: live in the city for a while.
- 35:40Speaker 3: I don't know if she I don't know if it
- 35:41Speaker 3: was BS or she was telling the truth.
- 35:43Speaker 4: But I always thought it was an interesting concept because
- 35:45Speaker 4: I could almost see how maybe she was telling the truth,
- 35:48Speaker 4: you know, I mean, because people work in these urban environments,
- 35:52Speaker 4: they don't have people who take care of their animals
- 35:53Speaker 4: and stuff. You get together, like a roster of ten
- 35:56Speaker 4: or fifteen households that you were taking care of. You
- 35:59Speaker 4: could probably make it back then. Anyway, you can probably
- 36:01Speaker 4: make a decent amount of money doing it.
- 36:02Speaker 6: Yeah, well that's you get out of the inner city
- 36:05Speaker 6: end of the suburbs. You can make up real good
- 36:06Speaker 6: living cutting grass.
- 36:08Speaker 4: That's right, hey, Uly that at twelve, absolutely right, yeah, absolutely, yeah, Yeah.
- 36:12Speaker 6: People get paid a lot more than you probably did
- 36:14Speaker 6: when you were twelve.
- 36:15Speaker 3: I'd say I have a filling. You're probably right as
- 36:17Speaker 3: far as that goes.
