- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hey there. Hope you're having an awesome
- 0:23week. This episode is really inspired
- 0:26by a conversation that I've been having a lot recently with
- 0:29people. And it's about not being able to
- 0:32see the path ahead. So people not being able to
- 0:36visualize or see exactly where they're going in their life.
- 0:39We call it the path ahead because it's, it's that, you
- 0:42know, metaphor of the path that we are walking in our lives.
- 0:46And for a lot of people, it can feel foggy.
- 0:49It can feel like visibility is very low, and it's discouraging
- 0:54to so many people when they feel like they don't have clarity
- 0:57about what is ahead of them, where they're going, what
- 1:01they're working for, the path that they're walking.
- 1:04It can be really, really frustrating.
- 1:07I don't know if you've ever been there.
- 1:09I certainly have. There have been periods in my
- 1:11life where I feel like I can't see more than a foot in front of
- 1:14me because the proverbial fog is so dense that I don't have a
- 1:19good sense of what direction I'm going.
- 1:21All I know is that I'm moving in some direction and it's a really
- 1:26uncomfortable feeling. And so for clients, when they're
- 1:29sitting here talking to me, I can see the frustration in their
- 1:32face. I can see the despair in their
- 1:34eyes when they're they're describing.
- 1:38I don't have clarity, I don't have visibility.
- 1:41And part of the coaching process is helping people get there.
- 1:44But I think it's worth a conversation because people feel
- 1:47very alone when they're in this position.
- 1:50And I want you to know that if you are in a place in your life
- 1:54where you are walking your path and it doesn't feel clear, you
- 1:58are not alone. You are not alone.
- 2:00It is a very common thing for people to go through When you go
- 2:05through those times in your life when you can only see a few feet
- 2:07in front of you. And I'm saying the word see in
- 2:10terms of that mental visualization of the path.
- 2:15We talked about the seasonality of so many different things,
- 2:19relationships, work, our physical health, our exercise
- 2:24and nutrition routines, whatever it looks like or whatever realm
- 2:29you're talking about, there are always seasons to it and there
- 2:32will be seasons that are foggy or stormy or low visibility when
- 2:38it comes to your goals or your vision for what you want for
- 2:42yourself. There just will be.
- 2:44And despite it being very uncomfortable and the fact that
- 2:47it can be a little scary, I wanted to pose a question to
- 2:50you. What if it was OK that you
- 2:53couldn't visualize a clear path ahead?
- 2:56What if that was OK? What if it was OK that you just
- 2:58continue to kind of walk forward in the fog?
- 3:01What if that was normal? Because I can tell you one
- 3:04thing. It is common.
- 3:06It is common, and most coaches would argue that it is normal to
- 3:11have those seasons. I mean, how can you be expected
- 3:13to have a clearview of the future all the time?
- 3:18I mean, we, we might have moments of clarity, seasons of
- 3:21clarity, periods of time where everything feels crystal clear
- 3:25and we're just, we're like cracking on our goals and we're
- 3:28feeling really fired up. We definitely have those
- 3:30moments, those periods of times, those seasons where that's true.
- 3:34And that's a good thing. That's when we're in our flow,
- 3:35when we're feeling really confident, where we can really
- 3:38picture ourselves charging forward in our life and moving
- 3:41towards the future that we're hoping for.
- 3:43Those times are great, and if we're lucky, we have a lot of
- 3:46those. But it's very normal and very
- 3:48common to have the periods of time where things feel a little
- 3:51bit foggy. And I think we need to normalize
- 3:54that a little bit more because our expectations of what life is
- 4:00and what it should look like have become a little bit
- 4:03distorted by our current times, by technology, by social media,
- 4:09by all these tools and resources that we have at our fingertips.
- 4:12It creates this false sense that we should have everything
- 4:15figured out all the time. And again, it's really nice when
- 4:20that falls into place, but it's not realistic that it can happen
- 4:23all the time. And here's the problem.
- 4:26What breaks a person? Like, what is the guaranteed
- 4:31loss in this situation? The guaranteed loss, the thing
- 4:35that really has people shortchanging themselves most of
- 4:39the time, is when they let go of their action, they let go of
- 4:44their momentum. They quit on their path because
- 4:48they cannot see the clear vision ahead of them, because they
- 4:51don't have clear visibility, because they feel like they
- 4:54can't see miles ahead. They assume that they're on the
- 4:58wrong path. They assume that they're going
- 5:00in the wrong direction, and that's a problem because so many
- 5:03people end up short, changing themselves, quitting too early,
- 5:07giving up on their dreams, their goals, their vision.
- 5:11In this day and age, we don't want to be operating on false
- 5:14presumptions, on erroneous expectations that everything
- 5:18should be clear and perfect, that we should have the ultimate
- 5:22clarity and a perfect visibility on our path all the time.
- 5:26That's a tragedy to have people quitting on themselves because
- 5:30of these false or distorted expectations.
- 5:34We can acknowledge stopping and quitting is different than
- 5:38resting or pausing. If you need to take some time,
- 5:42weeks, days, months, whatever you need to get clarity on what
- 5:46it is that you actually care about or what direction you want
- 5:49to be going, or maybe you just need to recalibrate a little
- 5:51bit. That's different than throwing
- 5:53in the towel and letting go and quitting.
- 5:55And I know you know the distinction.
- 5:58I certainly know the difference in my own self, my own body, the
- 6:01difference between wanting to quit and throw in the towel
- 6:04because I'm frustrated, because I can't see, because I'm lacking
- 6:07visibility. I understand that feeling versus
- 6:10the feeling of, OK, let's rest, let's pause, let's take a deep
- 6:15breath, and then let's solve the problem and start moving again.
- 6:19Those are two different feelings.
- 6:22And I want you to ask yourself, if I'm feeling this lack of
- 6:25clarity in my life, where am I? Am I in a place where I feel
- 6:29like I'm going to stop or quit? Or am I genuinely needing to
- 6:31rest and pause and recalibrate? Or am I continuing to take the
- 6:35action I need to take? What many people do is throw in
- 6:39the towel. And you know, most ideas or
- 6:42paths will start from a place of clarity.
- 6:45That's usually what happens for people.
- 6:47They get a hit of inspiration. They have a very clear vision
- 6:50for where they want to go and they get really excited about
- 6:53it. But on any path, there's
- 6:56ultimately going to be rain or fog or storms, something that's
- 6:59going to distort your ability to see that that clear path ahead.
- 7:03And during those times, people so often quit.
- 7:06They'll quit during the first couple of storms because it gets
- 7:08hard. And they have that illusion that
- 7:10there should be perfect visibility if they're on the
- 7:13quote UN quote right path, chasing the right goal.
- 7:18People feel like everything should work out exactly as I
- 7:22want it to. I should be able to see clearly
- 7:24if I'm on the right path chasing the right goal.
- 7:27And again, that illusion is fed by social media in comparison
- 7:31and algorithms that touch almost every person's life these days.
- 7:36But if you talk to any high performer, if you talk to any
- 7:39person who's been in the arena for any length of time, if
- 7:42you've talked to anybody who has built something in their life,
- 7:46or I mean, for God's sakes, any person who's just lived life for
- 7:51a good length of time, they will all tell you about a season of
- 7:55their life when their path felt unclear.
- 7:59So what's the message here? The message is that you will not
- 8:03always have perfect vision. You will not always be able to
- 8:07see the path clearly, but you can have focus, you can take
- 8:13inspired action, you can move forward despite the fogginess.
- 8:19You know, we, we really avoid getting focused, I think because
- 8:22people are afraid that they're going to get focused on the
- 8:25wrong thing or they're afraid that they're going to be walking
- 8:27the wrong path or climbing the wrong mountain, so to speak.
- 8:31But if you're doing something with intention, if you're
- 8:34showing up from a place of wanting to make a difference or
- 8:38serve or have impact, or maybe you're wanting to create
- 8:41something in your life, my experience is that the path
- 8:45takes you to where you need to go.
- 8:48And just because you can't see it all laid out for you doesn't
- 8:51mean that you're on the wrong path.
- 8:54We just have to acknowledge that we have a bit of a limited
- 8:56worldview because we can only see from our own perspective.
- 9:01We have to acknowledge that we have an inability to see the
- 9:05grander picture. We don't have the privilege of
- 9:08seeing that as humans, we'll never see it all.
- 9:12And we have to release some of our unrealistic expectations and
- 9:15timelines that we have, especially ones that are driven
- 9:19by the saboteur voices in our heads that say to us, oh, I
- 9:22should be further along by now, or I should have figured this
- 9:25stuff out by now, or I really should be able to see the
- 9:28vision. And I'm really frustrated that I
- 9:30can't see it. Those are all saboteur voices
- 9:33that are stealing our power. They distract us from the main
- 9:35goal, which is to keep going, to stay in motion, to keep taking
- 9:40those next steps. And so I want to pose these
- 9:43questions. What if every path that you've
- 9:46walked on so far was meant for you?
- 9:50What if you haven't taken any wrong paths?
- 9:53What if you are in the middle of stepping stones that take you to
- 9:58a place that you've been wanting to go?
- 10:01What if the next actions that you take help you progress even
- 10:05further on that right path to the big goal?
- 10:09All of these questions make me think about things differently.
- 10:12They shift my perspective a little bit in terms of the
- 10:15struggles that I'm experiencing in my day-to-day with my own
- 10:19path. We assume that if we can't see
- 10:23the future clearly, if we can't see all the outcomes or all the
- 10:26timelines, we assume we're on the wrong path at the wrong
- 10:30time, chasing the wrong goal. But it's just as likely to be
- 10:34true that we're on the exact right path at the exact right
- 10:37time, and that the next steps will get us closer to where we
- 10:41want to be. The shame would be stopping mid
- 10:44stepping stone. The shame would be quitting or
- 10:47throwing in the towel. And again, the reality is that
- 10:50we don't get to see the grand plan with all the paths marked
- 10:52out. That's just not a thing that we
- 10:54get to do as humans. But we can lean into trusting
- 10:58ourselves more. We can take inspired action.
- 11:02We can keep doing the next right thing for us, for our life.
- 11:07If you happen to feel like you can't see the path ahead, First
- 11:11off, no, you are not alone. So many of us have been there.
- 11:14I have been there. I'm sure your spouse has been
- 11:17there. Maybe your best friend, your
- 11:19parents, your sibling. I guarantee if you start asking
- 11:23around, your closest people have been feeling the way that you
- 11:27might be feeling now. And secondly, if you were in
- 11:31that place where the future feels unclear or the path has
- 11:36low visibility, don't stop moving forward.
- 11:39You might feel like you have to take some turns or even
- 11:42backtrack a little bit, but don't stop taking action in your
- 11:45life. Don't throw in the towel, don't
- 11:48check out, don't detach and dissociate and numb with Netflix
- 11:53and social media and other things.
- 11:55Don't let go of the creation part of your life.
- 11:58Keep taking action. Keep pursuing the feelings that
- 12:01you want to feel in your life because quitting that would be
- 12:04the real tragedy. To find yourself halfway across
- 12:08your stepping stones to your dreams or your goals, whatever
- 12:10they might be, and not even realize that you'd given up on
- 12:15something just before that life changing step happened, that
- 12:19would be the tragedy. So remember, in this next week,
- 12:23it's not just a vision that gets you what you want.
- 12:27It's not just seeing a clear path ahead that gets you what
- 12:30you want. It's the action that you take
- 12:34along the way, and that's something that you always have
- 12:37control over. That's something that is always
- 12:40within your power and your own agency, even if the path is
- 12:43unclear. So this week, I'm encouraging
- 12:47you. I'm cheering you on.
- 12:48And I hope that you feel like you could get into action today
- 12:52on something that feels important to you because I
