- 0:01Speaker 1: It's a nice day for a white wedding.
- 0:03Speaker 2: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 0:06Speaker 2: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Welcome in one of our favorite weekly guests from Big
- 0:21Speaker 3: 12 Radio on TuneIn and Big 12 Studios. He also
- 0:25Speaker 3: does some Dallas Cowboys work, Star Time on the Haymaker Network.
- 0:29Speaker 1: He is Ari Temkin. Welcome back to the show. How
- 0:32Speaker 1: are you, sir?
- 0:33Speaker 4: I'm great. How are you, brother?
- 0:35Speaker 1: I'm doing all right. How was your weekend?
- 0:38Speaker 4: It was great. I'm a big White Sox fan, so
- 0:40Speaker 4: I was super pumped about their game one win on
- 0:42Speaker 4: Saturday and looking forward to game two tonight. So hopefully
- 0:45Speaker 4: I can make some more history here. That'd be fun.
- 0:48Speaker 3: All right, well, help us figure out what's going on
- 0:50Speaker 3: in the Big 12 football conference.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, that too.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Yeah, we had another interesting weekend of football. I want
- 0:57Speaker 3: to start with the BYU-TCU game because, look, BYU went
- 1:01Speaker 3: on the road against Colorado State, and that counts as
- 1:04Speaker 3: a road game, but also, right, it's not a power
- 1:06Speaker 3: for a competitor. And they somehow got the win in
- 1:10Speaker 3: an absolutely hideous offensive performance for the Cougs.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Now, winning ugly means you have a good team.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Because it's not always going to be perfect, but TCU
- 1:20Speaker 3: had opportunities in this one and seemed like they handed
- 1:22Speaker 3: them back away. They're probably watching film and regretting so
- 1:25Speaker 3: much of what happened in that game. 17-10 victory for
- 1:30Speaker 3: BYU in their worst offensive day in the last five
- 1:33Speaker 3: or so years.
- 1:35Speaker 1: What does it mean for the Cougs and for the
- 1:37Speaker 1: Horned Frogs?
- 1:39Speaker 4: Yeah, this is very much a Rorschach test in terms of,
- 1:42Speaker 4: you know, 10 different people can look at this game
- 1:45Speaker 4: and come up with 10 different things and takeaways from it.
- 1:48Speaker 4: I mean, if you start on the TCU side, this
- 1:51Speaker 4: has just been an absolutely dreadful season. The biggest piece
- 1:56Speaker 4: to what Sonny Dyches was trying to do this offseason
- 1:58Speaker 4: was exactly what this team is. They have not fixed anything.
- 2:02Speaker 4: They just look different and are far worse and still
- 2:04Speaker 4: turn the ball over too much and, you know, still
- 2:07Speaker 4: can't run the football.
- 2:09Speaker 2: And.
- 2:09Speaker 4: you know, they had some, some big runs in this game,
- 2:12Speaker 4: but ultimately when you look at the totals, you know,
- 2:14Speaker 4: they were not able to really create separation from their,
- 2:16Speaker 4: from their linemen. And so it, you know, it sort
- 2:18Speaker 4: of regresses to what they were last year on the
- 2:22Speaker 4: BYU side. I think the first thing is the status
- 2:24Speaker 4: of LJ Martin, because anything you hope to do this
- 2:28Speaker 4: year rests on the ankles and health of LJ Martin. And,
- 2:33Speaker 4: you know, this is a guy that when he was healthy,
- 2:36Speaker 4: he was the big 12 player offensive player of the
- 2:38Speaker 4: year last year. And, We see how good this team
- 2:41Speaker 4: is with him, and conversely, we see how poor this
- 2:43Speaker 4: team can be without him. Look, I certainly will chalk
- 2:47Speaker 4: up some of the offensive inabilities of BYU to the
- 2:50Speaker 4: weather in Fort Worth. It was really nasty, but this
- 2:54Speaker 4: was not a great showing for either side. You're just
- 2:57Speaker 4: happy that BYU came away with it. I think there
- 2:59Speaker 4: were a few games this weekend where quarterbacks just willed
- 3:02Speaker 4: their teams to victory, and this was certainly one of them.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Bachmeier did what he needed to do in order to
- 3:07Speaker 4: get the win. and you like what you see. But
- 3:11Speaker 4: they've got a short week here Friday night against Iowa State,
- 3:14Speaker 4: which that'll be a tough one, especially because of what
- 3:16Speaker 4: Iowa State is doing, surprisingly. And then, of course, Notre Dame.
- 3:19Speaker 4: And my hope is, depending on the situation with LJ
- 3:22Speaker 4: that he can be healthy in return for that Notre
- 3:25Speaker 4: Dame game. I'm not so sure about Isaiah Glasker. It
- 3:29Speaker 4: looked like that could be significantly worse because of just
- 3:32Speaker 4: his demeanor on the sideline. He had a towel over
- 3:34Speaker 4: his head. He had a bunch of defense players coming
- 3:36Speaker 4: up to him. That's never a good sign. So you
- 3:39Speaker 4: hate that, but LJ is far more instrumental for the
- 3:41Speaker 4: team's success.
- 3:43Speaker 3: You mentioned Iowa state who does come to Lavelle Edwards
- 3:46Speaker 3: stadium on Friday. And that that's a team they're three
- 3:49Speaker 3: and two on the year. They're coming off a very
- 3:51Speaker 3: important win against West Virginia and what was ultimately a
- 3:54Speaker 3: really entertaining game. And, you know, Aiden Flora went off
- 3:59Speaker 3: 22 carries, 212 yards, three touchdowns. He also threw two
- 4:02Speaker 3: touchdown passes. And like, I'm looking at it from a
- 4:06Speaker 3: Utah lens. Do we suddenly say that that Iowa State
- 4:10Speaker 3: win on the road was like a super high-quality win,
- 4:13Speaker 3: or do we just have to take these games in
- 4:15Speaker 3: a vacuum week by week in the Big 12?
- 4:18Speaker 4: No, I think it's definitely aging better from a win.
- 4:21Speaker 4: West Virginia's got some major issues on defense. That's abundantly clear.
- 4:28Speaker 4: They had some of the worst pass defense in the
- 4:31Speaker 4: country the last two seasons. One of those is not
- 4:34Speaker 4: Rich Rod's fault, but certainly last year is, and this
- 4:37Speaker 4: year doesn't appear to be much better. I mean, Jalen Rayner...
- 4:40Speaker 4: who had completed about 54% of his passes on the
- 4:43Speaker 4: season coming into the game, completed 70% of his passes.
- 4:47Speaker 4: He was basically flawless during the football, which is something
- 4:49Speaker 4: we haven't really seen from him all season. I credit
- 4:53Speaker 4: that or chalk that more up to what West Virginia
- 4:56Speaker 4: can't do more so than what Jalen Rayner can do.
- 4:59Speaker 4: The thing we know about Iowa State is they can
- 5:01Speaker 4: play good defense, although they didn't as much in this game.
- 5:03Speaker 4: and they can run the football. And Flora is no joke.
- 5:06Speaker 4: We had him on the show this morning. He's a
- 5:07Speaker 4: former walk-on who's one of the few guys that hung
- 5:11Speaker 4: around Ames. I'm not sure if Campbell invited him to
- 5:16Speaker 4: Penn State or not, but he's one of the few
- 5:18Speaker 4: that stuck with it as a former walk-on, and he's
- 5:21Speaker 4: getting the opportunity now to be a future back. He
- 5:23Speaker 4: was a guy that certainly showed some explosiveness in the
- 5:25Speaker 4: return game last year, and he's, I believe, second in
- 5:28Speaker 4: the league right now in rushing games. He's at eight
- 5:30Speaker 4: yards a carry. It's a ridiculous number that he's at.
- 5:34Speaker 4: So BYU is going to have a handful on Friday night,
- 5:37Speaker 4: even though it is a home game. This is a
- 5:39Speaker 4: really good rushing attack. They're well-schemed.
- 5:41Speaker 1: They're well-coached.
- 5:42Speaker 4: And I don't know how many games Iowa State's going
- 5:45Speaker 4: to end up winning. I don't know if they're going
- 5:46Speaker 4: to get to six and get to bowl eligible. But
- 5:48Speaker 4: I think they are going to be a tough out
- 5:50Speaker 4: every single week.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Obviously, if you're a Utah fan, you're probably trying to
- 5:55Speaker 3: figure out where you should view that game because you
- 5:59Speaker 3: want your rival to lose, but also I think you
- 6:01Speaker 3: want your rival to be a top 10 opponent when
- 6:04Speaker 3: they come to Rice-Eckel Stadium so that it's a more
- 6:06Speaker 3: quality win for you.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Although, maybe it doesn't matter.
- 6:09Speaker 3: If Utah continues to be consistent the way they have been,
- 6:12Speaker 3: I think that you're probably okay. They had a bye
- 6:15Speaker 3: week last week, so there's nothing new to talk about
- 6:18Speaker 3: necessarily from what we had against that Iowa State in
- 6:22Speaker 3: that Iowa state game, Ari, but you know, based on
- 6:25Speaker 3: what we're seeing in the rest of the big 12 conference,
- 6:29Speaker 3: I guess my takeaway with the youths right now is
- 6:32Speaker 3: I'm surprised with the consistency. They, they have been arguably
- 6:36Speaker 3: the most consistent team through four games.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:39Speaker 3: And they're the team with the two new offensive coordinators
- 6:42Speaker 3: and a totally remade offensive line. It just, it seems
- 6:47Speaker 3: like the excuses are there where they could be inconsistent,
- 6:50Speaker 3: but they haven't been yet.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Yeah, no, and look, I mean, they're going to get
- 6:55Speaker 4: a Kansas team coming to town next week that's fresh off,
- 6:58Speaker 4: you know, the best offensive performance in the history of
- 7:00Speaker 4: the program. And, look, it is Middle Tennessee State, so
- 7:04Speaker 4: take it with a grain of salt. But this was
- 7:05Speaker 4: a team that under Andy Kovalev had been an explosive
- 7:08Speaker 4: rush offense. really as he's been the OC and had
- 7:12Speaker 4: not figured it out yet. So, you know, they may
- 7:14Speaker 4: have figured some stuff out with Dylan Edwards. We'll see.
- 7:17Speaker 4: But I do think that this could be a tougher
- 7:19Speaker 4: opponent than most expect coming in. And I think to
- 7:22Speaker 4: your point, you know, look, Utah has not played the
- 7:25Speaker 4: toughest schedule yet, but they played their schedule. They played
- 7:28Speaker 4: the teams in their schedule. They've beaten them. You know,
- 7:30Speaker 4: and they've beaten them pretty– they've handled teams pretty well.
- 7:32Speaker 4: And I think, you know, this Saturday should be another
- 7:34Speaker 4: test like that where coming out it might look, just
- 7:36Speaker 4: like you said, very consistent– And it should be thought
- 7:39Speaker 4: of as anything other than, yeah, this is what this
- 7:41Speaker 4: team does. They take care of business against the teams
- 7:43Speaker 4: they are supposed to take care of business against. And,
- 7:47Speaker 4: you know, look, I think they're very matchup-oriented. I know
- 7:49Speaker 4: you and I have talked about that, where, you know,
- 7:51Speaker 4: one week it's going to be Ficklin and Dampier. Another
- 7:54Speaker 4: week it's going to be LeSean Parker. And they're just
- 7:56Speaker 4: going to go in and figure out defensively what teams
- 7:58Speaker 4: want to do to them and take advantage of it.
- 8:00Speaker 4: And I think, you know, that is more than anything
- 8:03Speaker 4: most important in terms of overall offensive success. Look, there's teams...
- 8:08Speaker 4: You know, like Arizona's a good example, Arizona-Cincinnati. You know,
- 8:11Speaker 4: Cincinnati had one of the best rush offenses in the
- 8:14Speaker 4: Big 12, it was showing, but that did not show
- 8:17Speaker 4: up against Arizona. They completely flipped the script. So I
- 8:19Speaker 4: think teams, you know, that show the ability and capabilities
- 8:23Speaker 4: of being multiple, they just don't necessarily have to do
- 8:26Speaker 4: it week to week. They're the ones, you know, that
- 8:28Speaker 4: are going to be best served right now, and that
- 8:30Speaker 4: certainly is Utah.
- 8:32Speaker 3: So we were talking in the first segment about how
- 8:35Speaker 3: there's like these two parallel races going on right now
- 8:38Speaker 3: with the top four ranked teams in the conference. Because
- 8:41Speaker 3: Utah and BYU play each other, but they don't play
- 8:44Speaker 3: Texas Tech or Oklahoma State. And Texas Tech and Oklahoma
- 8:48Speaker 3: State do play each other, and they miss BYU and Utah.
- 8:52Speaker 3: And then there's Houston that gets in the mix with everybody.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And now Houston is like the ultimate wild card for me.
- 9:01Speaker 3: in a big 12 race. That's going to shape up
- 9:02Speaker 3: over these next few weeks because they do have a
- 9:06Speaker 3: head to head against Oklahoma state. They do have a
- 9:09Speaker 3: head to get ahead here at rice cycle stadium. That's
- 9:11Speaker 3: going to be Utah's first real tough test of the season.
- 9:14Speaker 3: We think, and you know, the Cougars have seen the
- 9:18Speaker 3: Houston Cougars. I should say to clarify, we're not talking
- 9:21Speaker 3: about BYU here. We've seen some good from them and some,
- 9:24Speaker 3: also some head scratching stuff from them.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And their only loss is against Oklahoma. Texas tech, who
- 9:29Speaker 1: was the defending champs and is one.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Of those top ranked teams that we're talking about. So
- 9:33Speaker 3: I guess it's a long winded way of me setting up,
- 9:36Speaker 3: like how good is Houston and will they be a
- 9:41Speaker 3: real factor in the conference championship race?
- 9:44Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a great question. And I think the short
- 9:47Speaker 4: answer is yes, but the longer answer is a lot
- 9:50Speaker 4: more complicated and a lot more of a, I'm not sure. Yeah.
- 9:53Speaker 4: I mean, let's, let's look at what Houston did with
- 9:55Speaker 4: UCF this week. They were done 17, nothing in the
- 9:58Speaker 4: third quarter of that game. It completely flipped. And I
- 10:01Speaker 4: think some of the reason it flipped was because of
- 10:03Speaker 4: Scott Frost. Some of the reason it flipped was because
- 10:06Speaker 4: of Connor Wigman. I mentioned earlier, Bachmeier would just not
- 10:10Speaker 4: allow his team to lose in that TCU game. Well,
- 10:12Speaker 4: same is true with Connor Wigman in the Houston game,
- 10:14Speaker 4: but it's more of of what we've seen from him
- 10:17Speaker 4: running the football than it was, you know, being great
- 10:19Speaker 4: down the field. Now let's Houston's past defense had been
- 10:22Speaker 4: a major problem at points this season and their defense
- 10:26Speaker 4: played really well in this game. They just found themselves
- 10:29Speaker 4: in a early hole down 17, nothing. You know, it's interesting.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Duke Watson for UCF had a 37 yard carry in
- 10:39Speaker 4: the third quarter of this game, which led to a touchdown,
- 10:41Speaker 4: which put UCF up 17, nothing. At that point, Duke
- 10:45Speaker 4: Watson had nine carries for 50 yards. Duke Watson finished
- 10:49Speaker 4: the game with nine carries for 50 yards. Scott Frost
- 10:52Speaker 4: ran 21 plays following that and did not run the
- 10:55Speaker 4: ball once. Five possessions, 21 plays, 17 yards total, zero
- 11:03Speaker 4: rush attempts. He said after the game they were all RPOs.
- 11:07Speaker 4: It was sort of on the quarterback. He said it's
- 11:08Speaker 4: not really that we didn't call a run, but, man,
- 11:11Speaker 4: at some point you've got to get on the headset
- 11:13Speaker 4: and say run the dang ball because they were running
- 11:16Speaker 4: the ball effectively. Again, 9 of 50 to not see
- 11:18Speaker 4: another carry after a 37-yard carry. sets up a score
- 11:21Speaker 4: to put you up three scores. It's sort of inexplicable. And,
- 11:24Speaker 4: you know, again, Houston saw the opening and took it.
- 11:28Speaker 4: So I don't want to take too much away from
- 11:30Speaker 4: Houston because, like we've been talking about, like, you've got
- 11:32Speaker 4: to win your game. You've got to win your clunkers. And,
- 11:35Speaker 4: you know, this is certainly one of them. The thing is, like...
- 11:37Speaker 4: nobody has looked dominant in the big 12. I think
- 11:40Speaker 4: you mentioned Utah has been the most consistent. I think
- 11:42Speaker 4: that's obvious. Oklahoma state to me is the most complete team,
- 11:45Speaker 4: but they've not been consistent and they're lost to Tulsa,
- 11:47Speaker 4: but they've shown ability to be really good passing the ball.
- 11:50Speaker 4: They showed their ability to be really good on the
- 11:52Speaker 4: ground and they have a really good defense. And that's
- 11:54Speaker 4: been the most consistent part of Oklahoma state. Texas tax
- 11:56Speaker 4: feels like they're, they're flirting with disaster here and they're
- 11:59Speaker 4: about to lose. I think Houston is the same. They're,
- 12:02Speaker 4: they're due for a huge disappointment. And then there's the
- 12:05Speaker 4: two Utah schools. And, and I certainly think they're, you know,
- 12:08Speaker 4: they're as good as they've looked and maybe Utah is
- 12:10Speaker 4: the most consistent out of the bunch.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Should we start talking about Baylor also Ari?
- 12:17Speaker 4: Yeah, man, there, that, For all the good defenses in
- 12:20Speaker 4: the Big 12, man, Baylor's got the best defense. I mean,
- 12:23Speaker 4: it's dominant, and the offense finally showed some signs of life.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Going into this game, Baylor had not really shown much
- 12:31Speaker 4: in terms of just any offensive firepower with Lagway and
- 12:34Speaker 4: with their running game. They got Rylan Morris, who's their
- 12:37Speaker 4: true freshman. He's a four-star going. He's out of Honeygrove, Texas.
- 12:41Speaker 4: They got him going in a big way in this game. Um,
- 12:44Speaker 4: you know, and, and it feels like once they sort
- 12:47Speaker 4: of broke a few runs, everything opened up for lagway
- 12:49Speaker 4: and he played a really good game. It's tough to
- 12:51Speaker 4: take any credit for him. He played phenomenally, but yeah,
- 12:54Speaker 4: I think with this defense, it is so disruptive and look,
- 12:58Speaker 4: I mean, Iran is not calling the plays and, and
- 13:00Speaker 4: there's a lot of jokes on that in terms of like,
- 13:02Speaker 4: just keep around as far away from the defense as possible.
- 13:05Speaker 4: But this, this defense has ran to fingerprints all over it.
- 13:08Speaker 4: If he's, even if he's not called the plays. It's disruptive.
- 13:11Speaker 4: They play behind the line of scrimmage. They've had guys
- 13:13Speaker 4: get hurt, and it still hasn't mattered. I think they're
- 13:16Speaker 4: number one or number two in the country in tackles
- 13:18Speaker 4: for loss. They're living in the backfield. So I think
- 13:21Speaker 4: you're totally right there. Baylor has shown, especially going on
- 13:24Speaker 4: the road late at night, winning a game like that,
- 13:26Speaker 4: completely dismantling an Arizona State team. That's as good as
- 13:30Speaker 4: Baylor has looked since Durant took over, basically since 2021,
- 13:33Speaker 4: and as bad as Arizona State has looked since they
- 13:35Speaker 4: joined the Big 12.
- 13:37Speaker 3: I feel like it's a bit of a crisis point
- 13:40Speaker 3: for Arizona state after Kenny Dillingham showed up in the
- 13:43Speaker 3: desert and shocked everyone and won the conference championship and
- 13:47Speaker 3: looked good in a playoff game. And I was like, ah,
- 13:50Speaker 3: finally my prediction, my longstanding prediction going back to when
- 13:55Speaker 3: you tell was in the, in the PAC 12, I
- 13:57Speaker 3: was like, if anyone gets things figured out at arizona
- 14:01Speaker 3: state that's a wonderful campus it's an easy place to
- 14:04Speaker 3: recruit to you've got a robust high school talent pool
- 14:07Speaker 3: that you can pull from the neighboring communities like somebody
- 14:11Speaker 3: is going to get it figured out at arizona state
- 14:13Speaker 3: again in the year of our lord 2020 something and
- 14:17Speaker 3: now you got to worry about them and i thought
- 14:19Speaker 3: that kenny dillingham did that and then He's fading.
- 14:23Speaker 1: He's falling.
- 14:24Speaker 3: And there was a weird like as he's exiting the field,
- 14:27Speaker 3: kind of like I don't want to microanalyze social media
- 14:30Speaker 3: videos where, you know, he kind of like, well, that
- 14:33Speaker 3: was a lot of fun talking to his athletic director
- 14:36Speaker 3: and university president. And they got dirty looks about it.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I'm just like, what's going on with Arizona State? Because
- 14:41Speaker 3: I thought this team was going to put themselves in
- 14:43Speaker 3: the same conversation as Texas Tech and Utah and BYU.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And they're just not.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think it starts with their offense.
- 14:54Speaker 5: This offense has just not been very good. Even in
- 14:57Speaker 5: the Kansas win.
- 14:59Speaker 4: In London, the offense was set up with really enticing fields.
- 15:04Speaker 4: I mean, Arizona State had a fumble recovery return to
- 15:08Speaker 4: the two-yard line, which obviously set up an easy score.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Early in that game, there was a 17-yard punt by Kansas,
- 15:15Speaker 4: which set up an easy touchdown for Reed Harris. So,
- 15:18Speaker 4: you know, even in the games where they've scored some points,
- 15:21Speaker 4: they haven't done it through offense, and it's not one thing.
- 15:25Speaker 4: I mean, we could certainly lay blame squarely on Cutter Boley,
- 15:28Speaker 4: and certainly he's got, you know, his culpability in it,
- 15:31Speaker 4: but it's the offensive line. I mean, as long as
- 15:34Speaker 4: Kenny Dillingham has been in Arizona State, they've had really
- 15:36Speaker 4: good offensive lines, they've been able to run the football,
- 15:39Speaker 4: and they've just been... awful at trying to run the ball.
- 15:41Speaker 4: And then that forces a lot on color. Bully is
- 15:44Speaker 4: still very, very inexperienced. I think it'll be telling to
- 15:47Speaker 4: see what they do in these next few weeks because,
- 15:50Speaker 4: you know, do they transition to Mikey Keene? Who's, you know,
- 15:55Speaker 4: the experienced quarterback that was battling with Bully, you know,
- 15:58Speaker 4: during fall camp, do they go in another direction or
- 16:01Speaker 4: do they stick with Bully and kind of help them
- 16:04Speaker 4: go through these growing pains and think more long-term with it?
- 16:07Speaker 4: I still have a lot of faith and confidence in Dillingham.
- 16:10Speaker 4: This is clearly the most disappointing team that he's had
- 16:13Speaker 4: since they joined the Big 12, and it's not very good.
- 16:16Speaker 4: I think defensively they expect to be a lot better,
- 16:18Speaker 4: and this Baylor game really exposed them in a lot
- 16:20Speaker 4: of ways. But for me, it starts at the offense.
- 16:23Speaker 4: It just has not been very good all year. It
- 16:24Speaker 4: starts up front, and they just did not do a
- 16:26Speaker 4: good enough job in replacing some of the guys they lost.
- 16:28Speaker 5: And making their offensive line work because their running game
- 16:32Speaker 5: can't go, which now reflects on Bowley, and it just
- 16:35Speaker 5: all plays into why they've been bad.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Is Dion on the hot seat yet?
- 16:40Speaker 4: Oh, he should be. Yeah. Oh man. He should be.
- 16:45Speaker 4: What's happening outside the lines is inexcusable. And let's start
- 16:51Speaker 4: with the Julian Lewis stuff. So it looks like Julian
- 16:53Speaker 4: Lewis has played his last nap for the Colorado Buffaloes
- 16:56Speaker 4: because however, the whole benching went down, did not go
- 17:00Speaker 4: well because you know, So Dion says publicly, oh, I
- 17:04Speaker 4: haven't spoken with him.
- 17:06Speaker 2: What?
- 17:07Speaker 4: What does that, what do you mean?
- 17:08Speaker 3: What do you mean you haven't spoken to the quarterback
- 17:11Speaker 3: that you're benching?
- 17:12Speaker 4: Like what? And, you know, you're hoping, thinking, like, maybe
- 17:16Speaker 4: that doesn't mean what we think it means. Like, maybe
- 17:19Speaker 4: it just sounds really bad. But as it turns out,
- 17:21Speaker 4: it probably does mean exactly what we think it means
- 17:23Speaker 4: because Lewis was the third-string quarterback, and then Dion was
- 17:27Speaker 4: asked about it after the game, and he was like,
- 17:28Speaker 4: we have to ask Juju. No, no, we're asking you
- 17:31Speaker 4: because you're available, and you're the coach of this football team. And,
- 17:34Speaker 4: you know, eventually it was like, Oh, man, did he
- 17:36Speaker 4: basically have a falling out with Julian Lewis because of
- 17:39Speaker 4: the way that that went down? And it's hard to
- 17:41Speaker 4: blame Lewis for that, quite frankly. I mean, if you've
- 17:43Speaker 4: got a familial atmosphere that you're trying to peddle at
- 17:46Speaker 4: Colorado of how much we love each other and blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 17:49Speaker 4: that doesn't sound very familial. That sounds like a really bad,
- 17:53Speaker 4: toxic situation. And then I'm sure you heard the story
- 17:57Speaker 4: about somebody on Colorado staff basically leaving their playbook, the
- 18:02Speaker 4: opening set of plays, at the bar at the Colorado
- 18:06Speaker 4: team hotel, the tech fans found. And, and as most
- 18:10Speaker 4: figured probably.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Wasn't anything until that they looked and saw that that
- 18:14Speaker 5: was basically the.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Exact script, the opening script of the game. I mean,
- 18:20Speaker 4: what like this, you can't even make this up how
- 18:24Speaker 4: negligible this stuff is. So, you know, look, I I've got,
- 18:27Speaker 4: I got my face. I expected Colorado to be a
- 18:28Speaker 4: lot better. They are absolutely atrocious on offense. In fact,
- 18:33Speaker 4: the six plays that they leaked were the best six
- 18:35Speaker 4: plays in the ballgame because they scored in the opening
- 18:37Speaker 4: drive and then didn't score again. Now they have an
- 18:39Speaker 4: absolute mess on their hands with Isaac Wilson, of course,
- 18:41Speaker 4: a guy very familiar in the state of Utah who
- 18:44Speaker 4: did not play well once. They really pinned their ears
- 18:47Speaker 4: back and came after him. Tack in the second half
- 18:49Speaker 4: just decided. we're just going to go all out blitz
- 18:51Speaker 4: on every single play. And yeah, it worked because Wilson
- 18:54Speaker 4: couldn't do nothing in the second half of that game.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Colorado's got a major problem and they're paying Dion a
- 18:59Speaker 4: bunch of money. And even though they haven't got a
- 19:01Speaker 4: bunch of money to get out of that and a buyout,
- 19:04Speaker 4: I mean, at this point, you're almost better off looking
- 19:07Speaker 4: at that buyout given, you know, you can't afford to
- 19:10Speaker 4: keep him at this point in time because of all
- 19:12Speaker 4: the money it's going to take to try to get
- 19:14Speaker 4: the players you need in here. You know, we'll see
- 19:16Speaker 4: when it's all said and done how many wins he has. But, yeah,
- 19:19Speaker 4: this is trending in a very wrong direction for Colorado.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Oh, the Big 12 soap opera, so much fun to cover.
- 19:25Speaker 3: We're lucky to be able to do it. We're lucky
- 19:28Speaker 3: to have Ari Temkin join us every single week. Ari,
- 19:30Speaker 3: thanks for your time as always. You're not making it
- 19:33Speaker 3: out to Salt Lake City for this one as a Jayhawk,
- 19:36Speaker 3: are you?
- 19:37Speaker 4: No, not for this one, but I would love to
- 19:39Speaker 4: go out for BYU in Utah, man. That's what I'm
- 19:42Speaker 4: hoping for. We'll see.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Hopefully you could do that, and we'd love to have
- 19:45Speaker 3: you in studio when you get here if.
- 19:47Speaker 4: You do, all right? Awesome. Nope. That sounds amazing. All right.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Thanks. I appreciate you.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Take care.
- 19:54Speaker 1: I'll see Ari Temkin.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Great stuff as always from a man who hosts big
