- 0:03Speaker 1: and don't get to you far ahead of yourself, and
- 0:05Speaker 1: don't make it super super serious if it's not, because
- 0:08Speaker 1: there's always someone else who's dealing with something that's a
- 0:11Speaker 1: little bit more difficult. So have perspective.
- 0:28Speaker 2: What is going on? Hurdlers.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Let me be one of the first to wish you
- 0:34Speaker 3: happy New Year twenty twenty one. We made it man
- 0:41Speaker 3: that feels good. Emily about a year for you. The
- 0:44Speaker 3: fifth and final day of the Turning the Page series
- 0:49Speaker 3: from Hurdle a while this focus podcast or I sit
- 0:52Speaker 3: down with inspiring individuals to chat about everything from their
- 0:55Speaker 3: big wins to how they've gotten through some.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Of life's toughest moments.
- 1:00Speaker 3: On the show, you can expect vulnerability, motivation, and candid
- 1:04Speaker 3: discussions with everyone from top athletes to aspiring entrepreneurs on
- 1:09Speaker 3: what it really takes to follow your passions. My mission
- 1:13Speaker 3: is simple to inspire you to be your best self,
- 1:16Speaker 3: move with intention, and have some fun along the way.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I'm sitting here smiling because this week has been really
- 1:25Speaker 3: special for me, not just because of the awesome conversations
- 1:29Speaker 3: that I've had the privilege of having and then bringing
- 1:33Speaker 3: to you here on the Hurdle Feed. But because Hurdle
- 1:37Speaker 3: is officially three years old, I know, I know, it
- 1:42Speaker 3: grows up so fast. I'm so lamely excited about this milestone,
- 1:47Speaker 3: and more so because of everything that happened in this
- 1:53Speaker 3: big year in twenty twenty. Twenty twenty was a tough
- 1:57Speaker 3: one for so many of us myself, don't get me wrong,
- 2:01Speaker 3: but a really beautiful opportunity to, you know, take Hurdle
- 2:06Speaker 3: to a different place.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Now, Hurdle is publishing typically three.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Times a week, something I couldn't have even fathomed when
- 2:15Speaker 3: I started the show going in to twenty eighteen, and alas,
- 2:21Speaker 3: here we are, and I am so thankful for every
- 2:26Speaker 3: single one of the almost at this point two point
- 2:30Speaker 3: seven five million downloads of this little thing I dreamt
- 2:37Speaker 3: up in my New York City apartment. I've been rambling
- 2:39Speaker 3: here for a minute, kind of burying the lead, because
- 2:43Speaker 3: today's episode is with none other than Does Lindon. She's
- 2:48Speaker 3: an Olympian, She's one of your favorite runners, I know
- 2:51Speaker 3: she is, and just an all around amazing person, a
- 2:55Speaker 3: hilarious human and someone that I am so grateful to
- 2:59Speaker 3: have had the opportunity to interview multiple times now. For
- 3:04Speaker 3: today's episode, in true Des fashion, we are talking about
- 3:08Speaker 3: how to get through hard things, how does navigated the
- 3:13Speaker 3: year that was, and her highlights of the year as well,
- 3:17Speaker 3: including what will now always be referred to by runners
- 3:22Speaker 3: everywhere as Desctober AKAA October where the runner literally ran
- 3:29Speaker 3: every single day of the month the mileage of the
- 3:32Speaker 3: day one mile for October one, two miles for October two,
- 3:37Speaker 3: three miles for October three.
- 3:39Speaker 2: You see where I'm going with this.
- 3:40Speaker 3: As you can imagine, it definitely got up there toward
- 3:42Speaker 3: the end, and she shares with me her real feelings
- 3:45Speaker 3: about running that kind of mileage, how she how she
- 3:49Speaker 3: navigated it, and what it made her consider for the
- 3:53Speaker 3: years to come.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Not giving you any spoiler alerts.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Just yet, we also talk about the tools and tricks
- 4:00Speaker 3: she used to get through those tough days, how she
- 4:04Speaker 3: felt to finally race at least just once toward the
- 4:08Speaker 3: end of the year after not doing so since February,
- 4:12Speaker 3: and so much more. Before we get into it today,
- 4:15Speaker 3: you know, I've got to give some love to my
- 4:17Speaker 3: sponsor at Athletic Greens.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Des is a runner. I am a runner. If you
- 4:24Speaker 2: too are a runner, or simply just an athlete.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Then you know how particular we can be about our
- 4:31Speaker 3: must have things. Whether that's a sports bra, whether that's
- 4:35Speaker 3: a wearable. There are so many things that we can
- 4:37Speaker 3: be very specific about. And for me, I have always
- 4:41Speaker 3: been really careful about what I am putting into my body,
- 4:46Speaker 3: especially around the.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Time when I'm heading out and lacing up.
- 4:51Speaker 3: For me, I drink Athletic Greens right when I come
- 4:54Speaker 3: back in from my run, and it is the ideal
- 4:58Speaker 3: way for me to get in seventy five.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Vitamins, minerals and whole food.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Sourced ingredients that are nutrient rich and anti inflammatory and
- 5:07Speaker 3: antioxidic compounds that nourish my training.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Plus it tastes great. I can't stress out enough.
- 5:14Speaker 3: I think this is probably the most popular question I
- 5:16Speaker 3: get about Athletic Greens.
- 5:18Speaker 2: What does it taste like?
- 5:19Speaker 3: It is not grassy like so many other beverages that
- 5:23Speaker 3: I have tried in this vein in the past. In fact,
- 5:26Speaker 3: it's got a hint of sweetness that makes it just something.
- 5:30Speaker 2: To look forward to every day.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Of course, Athletic Greens has an awesome offer for hurdle listeners.
- 5:35Speaker 3: With your first purchase today, get a free year's supply

- 6:27Speaker 2: means the world to me. Thanks for hanging with me
- 6:30Speaker 2: this week.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I've got another special series coming at to Fast next week,
- 6:35Speaker 3: so stay tuned.
- 6:37Speaker 2: We're only going up from here with that. Let's get
- 6:40Speaker 2: to hurdling today.
- 6:49Speaker 3: I am sitting down with the one and only Des Lindon,
- 6:53Speaker 3: professional runner, professional athlete.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Does how you doing?
- 6:58Speaker 1: I'm doing well, I mean as can be expected, right.
- 7:01Speaker 3: As well as can be expected. It's been a while
- 7:04Speaker 3: since we chatted. We chatted at like the very beginning
- 7:07Speaker 3: of the pandemic. In fact, this was coming to meet
- 7:10Speaker 3: you to what would have been record in person, would
- 7:15Speaker 3: have been for me the last trip I almost took
- 7:19Speaker 3: before I never left my apartment again.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yeah, the first flights canceled.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yeah, oh my god, Oh what a bummer.
- 7:28Speaker 3: It was a bummer, but we still made it happen
- 7:31Speaker 3: and to date now the DEAs Lindon episode of Hurdle
- 7:34Speaker 3: one of the most popular.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Not Surprised.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Yeah, talk to me about how you know the year
- 7:41Speaker 3: has gone for you.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been wild, and I think for everyone there's
- 7:48Speaker 1: no blueprint, there's no playbook for how to manage. So
- 7:52Speaker 1: it's been interesting and I hate to say fun because
- 7:54Speaker 1: this is a horrible time, but challenges are always kind
- 7:57Speaker 1: of fun. Like you find out a lot about yourself,
- 8:00Speaker 1: dig a little deeper than you thought you could, and
- 8:02Speaker 1: make some pivots, and it's just all interesting at the end,
- 8:05Speaker 1: and if you learn and get better from it, then
- 8:08Speaker 1: it's not a lost cause.
- 8:09Speaker 3: I suppose talk to me about what you had planned
- 8:13Speaker 3: for the year and then what you did instead.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Yeah, so the beginning of the this time last year,
- 8:21Speaker 1: we're announcing I'm going to do the trials and then
- 8:24Speaker 1: we're going to bounce back and go to Boston and
- 8:26Speaker 1: you know, hopefully we'll be on that team and have
- 8:29Speaker 1: a really big summer lined up. So it's all this
- 8:32Speaker 1: exciting stuff. Did not make the team, which was a bummer.
- 8:35Speaker 1: You know. It was such a tough race and I
- 8:37Speaker 1: was fourth, and you kind of look at that and
- 8:40Speaker 1: it's it just sits in your gut wrong, and you go,
- 8:42Speaker 1: all right, this is fine. We got Boston to turn
- 8:45Speaker 1: around and at least make it right. And then that
- 8:48Speaker 1: just got pulled from the schedule. So it was tough
- 8:51Speaker 1: kind of figuring out because you just look at that
- 8:53Speaker 1: last race and go, Okay, this is the defining moment,
- 8:56Speaker 1: and I really just want to right this wrong. And
- 8:59Speaker 1: so when Boston was postponed, I guess initially I tried
- 9:04Speaker 1: to say I was super motivated, like maybe we'll get
- 9:05Speaker 1: on the track. We had all these big plans and
- 9:08Speaker 1: then things just gept falling off pretty rapidly, and so
- 9:11Speaker 1: at hip pause and uh just readjust.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Can we talk about the mentality of maybe I'll get
- 9:17Speaker 3: on the track, because I think I mean, obviously so
- 9:21Speaker 3: different going from the marathon to the track. So when
- 9:25Speaker 3: someone like you thinks that where's your hat at?
- 9:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I was just super motivated to get
- 9:34Speaker 1: in another trials. It is different, but it's a different
- 9:38Speaker 1: you know, It's another one of those challenges where you're like,
- 9:39Speaker 1: I've done this before, Let's see if I still got
- 9:43Speaker 1: it in me as long as you're not flirting with
- 9:46Speaker 1: a long term injury. It's just getting comfortable being uncomfortable,
- 9:50Speaker 1: but in a different way. And so that was kind
- 9:52Speaker 1: of interesting.
- 9:54Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Then obviously there was a pivot there too, but I
- 9:56Speaker 1: was enjoying doing that work and kind of tackling the
- 9:59Speaker 1: shorter stuff and I think it still pays off eventually,
- 10:01Speaker 1: but just a different mentality.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Different mentality.
- 10:05Speaker 3: So what has running looked like for you in twenty twenty.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been pretty much all over the board. It's
- 10:15Speaker 1: looked like a lot of different things. And so, you know,
- 10:18Speaker 1: it was hit reset formulate a new plan because I
- 10:22Speaker 1: feel like we kind of went all chips in with
- 10:25Speaker 1: this Trials Boston. You know, it's a bunch of races
- 10:28Speaker 1: in a row, and then it was like, okay, these
- 10:31Speaker 1: are all we're to pull the ships back here and
- 10:32Speaker 1: re plan this bet. And now it's kind of looked
- 10:36Speaker 1: like a long game where go, Okay, well, how many
- 10:39Speaker 1: more years can I do this if I'm patient and
- 10:42Speaker 1: sort of dole out the energy correctly, And so that
- 10:46Speaker 1: looked like a break. So it took a nice bought
- 10:50Speaker 1: a month off from running where I just let myself
- 10:53Speaker 1: recover and get out of shape and then slowly built
- 10:58Speaker 1: back up into shape and then kind of got a
- 11:00Speaker 1: little bit bored. So in October we did this Calendar
- 11:04Speaker 1: Club challenge that was just a ton of mileage but
- 11:07Speaker 1: really really fun. And then in the middle of that
- 11:10Speaker 1: challenge in October where I was running the mileage of
- 11:13Speaker 1: the day of the month, So October first one mile,
- 11:16Speaker 1: October fifteen fifteen miles, October thirty thirty miles, so it
- 11:19Speaker 1: adds up late. But in the middle of that month,
- 11:22Speaker 1: I think Josh came to me and said, hey, there
- 11:25Speaker 1: might be a race in Mississippi. Would you want to
- 11:27Speaker 1: do that? And when things fall into your lap, but
- 11:31Speaker 1: you don't really overthink it, you go, yeah, I'll give
- 11:33Speaker 1: it a try and see what we can do. And
- 11:34Speaker 1: so just coming off of that now, so it's been
- 11:36Speaker 1: like one of everything, and none of it's been great,
- 11:39Speaker 1: but a lot of it's been fun. And it's a
- 11:40Speaker 1: little kind of the holding patterns right now.
- 11:43Speaker 3: None of it's been great, but a lot of it's
- 11:45Speaker 3: been fun. I love that perspective on it. I mean,
- 11:51Speaker 3: when was the last time that you took a month
- 11:52Speaker 3: completely off of running?
- 11:55Speaker 1: Would have been two thy seventeen.
- 11:58Speaker 3: At the latter half of the year, right, Did it
- 12:00Speaker 3: feel different this time taking time off of running than
- 12:03Speaker 3: it did then?
- 12:04Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 12:05Speaker 1: I was more itchy to run this time, Like I
- 12:07Speaker 1: kind of I knew I needed the time off, but
- 12:10Speaker 1: I wanted to be preparing for something. And then it
- 12:14Speaker 1: was also like, well, there's really nothing to prepare for
- 12:16Speaker 1: right now, so just like suck it up and let
- 12:19Speaker 1: your legs freshen up a bit. So it was it
- 12:21Speaker 1: was definitely different than in seventeen, where I was like,
- 12:24Speaker 1: I really just need a break.
- 12:26Speaker 3: On the note of there's nothing to prepare for right now.
- 12:29Speaker 3: I'm sure you've been hearing from a lot of the
- 12:30Speaker 3: people that you communicate with, whether it be on Twitter
- 12:33Speaker 3: or elsewhere, as I have been hearing just this feedback
- 12:36Speaker 3: of I don't know what to do with my running
- 12:39Speaker 3: because there is quote unquote nothing to prepare for right now.
- 12:44Speaker 2: What do you say to that?
- 12:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think it's going to be a
- 12:47Speaker 1: thing that changes all the time, and discipline is super important,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I think. So it's not always going to be a
- 12:53Speaker 1: motivation thing that gets you going, and maybe it's not
- 12:56Speaker 1: having that motivation out there, but you can still stay disciplined.
- 13:00Speaker 1: But if it's just like general fatigue and frustration, also,
- 13:04Speaker 1: you got to go easy in yourself too, give yourself
- 13:07Speaker 1: a break and allow yourself to miss it a little bit,
- 13:10Speaker 1: you know, and then when you go, oh, shoot, I
- 13:12Speaker 1: really want to go running, well, you still have plenty
- 13:15Speaker 1: of time to get ready because there's still nothing on
- 13:18Speaker 1: the schedule.
- 13:19Speaker 3: So unless you find a random race in Mississippi to.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Go to, exactly, and they're popping up, but they're really
- 13:26Speaker 1: small and they're really strange, and everyone has a mask
- 13:30Speaker 1: on at the start and we're all spread out and
- 13:32Speaker 1: there's no fans. So even when you get back into
- 13:35Speaker 1: it's going to look different. You just have to, I
- 13:38Speaker 1: don't know, be super flexible about the attitude.
- 13:41Speaker 3: So first I want to ask you more about what
- 13:44Speaker 3: that race was like, and also like maybe a lesson
- 13:47Speaker 3: you took away from the fact that it was so different.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, hats off to the folks down there
- 13:55Speaker 1: who are able to pull something off right now. I
- 13:57Speaker 1: think it's a lot of planning and hard work and
- 14:00Speaker 1: they were certainly cautious about things and if it all
- 14:04Speaker 1: felt safe enough. So that was good to kind of
- 14:08Speaker 1: just experience. But it is very very different in like,
- 14:12Speaker 1: these corrals are set up so far apart, and there's
- 14:16Speaker 1: you know, a start gun and a few people start,
- 14:19Speaker 1: you know, then there's not anybody along the course, so
- 14:23Speaker 1: you just have to Again, it goes back to that motivation.
- 14:26Speaker 1: If you get really amped up by big crowds of
- 14:30Speaker 1: large stage, you're gonna have to just really adapt what
- 14:34Speaker 1: your expectations are and also be disciplined when even even
- 14:39Speaker 1: if you're out there and you choose to race, like
- 14:42Speaker 1: dig into the things at work and you know, keep
- 14:46Speaker 1: plugging away, but expect don't expect it to be the same.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:50Speaker 3: And I mean when you think about this year, spending
- 14:54Speaker 3: so much time at home, way much more time than
- 14:57Speaker 3: you're used to, how has that How has that been
- 15:00Speaker 3: for you? The lack of travel and the and the
- 15:02Speaker 3: being in one place.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it was awesome. At first, I was like, oh,
- 15:06Speaker 1: I love being home. Summer's amazing, Like I get to
- 15:10Speaker 1: run with the dogs every day, see Ryan all the time.
- 15:13Speaker 1: And now I'm like, Okay, I'm gonna go to Mississippi
- 15:16Speaker 1: because I need to take a break from those three things,
- 15:20Speaker 1: like find me anything. I'll go anywhere and do a
- 15:23Speaker 1: race just to get some space. No, I do feel
- 15:27Speaker 1: like it's one of those things that I don't want
- 15:30Speaker 1: to look back and be like, oh man, I really
- 15:32Speaker 1: we had this year where things were totally off the
- 15:34Speaker 1: schedule and I didn't you know, I should have done this,
- 15:38Speaker 1: or I could have accomplished that. There's still stuff we
- 15:41Speaker 1: can get done, and I've worked on like a ton
- 15:44Speaker 1: of different projects that I can stay home and do.
- 15:47Speaker 1: So it's been great and I don't think I'll be
- 15:50Speaker 1: really excited for this period to end. And I hope
- 15:52Speaker 1: I don't look back and go, well, I should have
- 15:54Speaker 1: could have would have got that done.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:57Speaker 3: I mean, on the reflection note, when you think about
- 16:00Speaker 3: the year as a whole, what would you say have
- 16:04Speaker 3: been maybe one or two of the biggest lessons that
- 16:08Speaker 3: you're walking out of twenty twenty with.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I just say, I've probably already really hammered these down,
- 16:16Speaker 1: but to simplify, I mean, you have to be flexible.
- 16:20Speaker 1: You know, we can't have this idea in our head
- 16:23Speaker 1: of what it's supposed to be and then be confronted
- 16:27Speaker 1: with reality and go, oh no, I don't know how
- 16:29Speaker 1: to adapt. Just be open to the possibility that things
- 16:32Speaker 1: are going to look different and that you can still manage.
- 16:35Speaker 1: And I think find the upside in cremy situations. There's
- 16:38Speaker 1: always something positive that we can dig out of it.
- 16:41Speaker 1: And whether it's time with the family, not getting on airplanes,
- 16:45Speaker 1: all of that stuff. I think, you know, we get
- 16:48Speaker 1: into the grind and we're like, man, I wish I
- 16:50Speaker 1: could just take a weekend home. So I think there's
- 16:54Speaker 1: some really great things that have come out of this too,
- 16:56Speaker 1: and I'm certainly going to appreciate those things.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Aside from the time with your family, the time with
- 17:02Speaker 3: your dogs, what has been something else unexpected to come
- 17:05Speaker 3: from this year for you?
- 17:07Speaker 1: I thought running the Destober miles was totally out of
- 17:15Speaker 1: the blue. It was just a project that kind of
- 17:17Speaker 1: like fell into our laps, like, oh, this would be
- 17:19Speaker 1: really fun to do, and just taking on that new
- 17:22Speaker 1: challenge wasn't something I expected to be doing this year
- 17:25Speaker 1: and wasn't something i'd expect to really enjoy. Like you
- 17:29Speaker 1: get into those late weeks and you're going twenty two miles,
- 17:32Speaker 1: twenty three miles, twenty four miles. But I just really
- 17:35Speaker 1: got into the rhythm of it and had a lot
- 17:38Speaker 1: of fun just going out running for the sake of running,
- 17:40Speaker 1: which sounds like a funny thing to be a surprise buy,
- 17:44Speaker 1: but when we're training so hard towards the goal, this
- 17:48Speaker 1: was just so different, And you know, I liked that
- 17:51Speaker 1: I was able to appreciate just going out for a run.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I think there's something really beautiful in that too, as
- 17:56Speaker 3: you kind of hinted at, just like this idea that
- 17:58Speaker 3: there are some things that we do all the time,
- 18:01Speaker 3: day in and day out, but until you like take
- 18:03Speaker 3: a step back and maybe think of it in a
- 18:05Speaker 3: different way or approach it in a different way, Like
- 18:08Speaker 3: you're never going to see it from that different lens.
- 18:11Speaker 1: It's like the to the trees and the forest analogy,
- 18:16Speaker 1: Like sometimes you just do in it to realize that
- 18:18Speaker 1: it's beautiful.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Right when you uh, when you were doing Dostober previous
- 18:23Speaker 3: to that, I mean because you were probably rocking out
- 18:26Speaker 3: mileage you've never racked up before in your life.
- 18:29Speaker 2: What was the farthest that you had run?
- 18:31Speaker 1: Twenty six point two miles? I stop right there.
- 18:37Speaker 2: That's the limit for me.
- 18:38Speaker 3: So I mean, what did you learn about yourself getting
- 18:41Speaker 3: into those like later upper I mean beyond the twenty six.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I really enjoyed it. I think that I tended to
- 18:48Speaker 1: like it got me in pretty decent shape. I thrive
- 18:51Speaker 1: off of those big miles, and like IO, towards the end,
- 18:54Speaker 1: I was, you know, closing out those runs stronger and
- 18:57Speaker 1: stronger each day, which was really kind of cool and
- 19:00Speaker 1: different and interesting. So I think there's capacity to you know,
- 19:04Speaker 1: move up to the longer stuff eventually and have some
- 19:07Speaker 1: fun with that, Like I enjoyed it, So I think
- 19:09Speaker 1: I would enjoy training for some of the longer.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Distances casual just as announcing her candidacy to be the
- 19:18Speaker 3: next Great Ultra marathonor would you be like a trail
- 19:22Speaker 3: ultra marathonor or would you be like a road ultra marathon?
- 19:25Speaker 1: Her probably road, just because limited trail training out here,
- 19:32Speaker 1: and all the trail stuff is at altitude, where then
- 19:34Speaker 1: that's a whole different ballpark where You're like climbing into
- 19:38Speaker 1: the thousands of feet above here and it's all thin.
- 19:42Speaker 2: It's all thin up there. No one wants to be there.
- 19:46Speaker 3: What what sneaker were you running in the most in October?
- 19:49Speaker 3: Was there one more than others?
- 19:50Speaker 1: I usually I was going to say Glistern because that's
- 19:52Speaker 1: what I always run in, but I was in the
- 19:54Speaker 1: Ghost quite a bit. That was just a really good shoe.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I didn't I've never really worn the love of take
- 20:00Speaker 1: too much, and I started using that a good amount.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Cloister and then Ghost, but Ghost was kind of the
- 20:07Speaker 1: taking the grunt of the mileage.
- 20:08Speaker 3: What excites you about twenty and twenty one?
- 20:13Speaker 1: I feel like fresh start. There's just that, So people
- 20:16Speaker 1: are going to be hopeful. Whether or not that goes
- 20:19Speaker 1: better or worse than last year, who knows. But the
- 20:22Speaker 1: idea of turning a page and feeling like it's a
- 20:25Speaker 1: fresh start's always nice. Getting back to racing. I think
- 20:29Speaker 1: that that. I really feel like that's going to happen
- 20:31Speaker 1: by summerfall, so that'll be really fun to get back
- 20:35Speaker 1: to and trying new new things. You know, I think
- 20:41Speaker 1: this has been fun. Where I'm going to do the
- 20:43Speaker 1: commentating for the marathon project and that's been great. Yeah,
- 20:47Speaker 1: So there's just I have a hands in a few
- 20:49Speaker 1: different projects and like getting to do Doestobers, Like there's
- 20:52Speaker 1: nothing elite running about that, but it's like, let's connect
- 20:57Speaker 1: the runners who do the activity with the people do
- 21:00Speaker 1: the sport and let's bridge that gap just a little bit.
- 21:02Speaker 1: And so having that community was really cool, and so
- 21:05Speaker 1: things like that. I think we'll be able to do
- 21:07Speaker 1: a few more of the those types of things in.
- 21:09Speaker 3: The future when like situations are really tough for you,
- 21:14Speaker 3: and I mean, obviously it's hard not to reflect on
- 21:16Speaker 3: like the Des that we know, which was like tough Boston,
- 21:19Speaker 3: but beyond tough Boston. Like when we think about when
- 21:22Speaker 3: stuff's hard, like twenty twenty, what do you keep going
- 21:26Speaker 3: back to when you're handling tough times. Is there like
- 21:29Speaker 3: one mantra or one like mental state or do you
- 21:31Speaker 3: put yourself back in like one specific place, Because I'm
- 21:34Speaker 3: sure that so many people when they go through tough stuff,
- 21:37Speaker 3: they're like, well, if Des could do Boston, then I
- 21:39Speaker 3: can do tough stuff. So what does Dez think about?
- 21:43Speaker 1: I wish it were really profound, but it's kind of like,
- 21:47Speaker 1: don't take things too seriously. I guess this is just running,
- 21:51Speaker 1: or you know, it's just coffee that we're roasting, or
- 21:55Speaker 1: whatever it may be. It's like, just slow down and
- 21:58Speaker 1: you know, be in the moment. Don't get too far
- 22:00Speaker 1: ahead of yourself, and don't make it super super serious
- 22:04Speaker 1: if it's not, because there's always someone else who's dealing
- 22:07Speaker 1: with something that's a little bit more difficult. So have perspective.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Yeah, And I mean you mentioned the highlight of Destober
- 22:15Speaker 3: being so awesome. I think that because the year has
- 22:18Speaker 3: just been so wishy washy, so many people are like
- 22:21Speaker 3: the whole thing was a wash If I was to
- 22:23Speaker 3: ask you about, like one of your highlights from the year,
- 22:27Speaker 3: what's the highlight.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I mean, the trials seems like a low light, but
- 22:31Speaker 1: I actually thought it was great. I mean I got
- 22:34Speaker 1: to race that field was incredible, the I mean, Atlanta
- 22:38Speaker 1: Track Club did such a great job with that event.
- 22:41Speaker 1: It was just really special to be a part of
- 22:43Speaker 1: that event. So results aside, I loved being in that race.
- 22:47Speaker 1: And then you even throw in the results and you go, well,
- 22:50Speaker 1: fourth is not that's not too shabby, Like that's okay,
- 22:54Speaker 1: And so I thought that was you know, that's an
- 22:57Speaker 1: easy one to just put as a highlight.
- 22:59Speaker 3: Have you received any stellar advice in twenty twenty?
- 23:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I get advice all the time, and
- 23:06Speaker 1: I like to pretend that I knew of it all along.
- 23:08Speaker 2: But how do you handle that?
- 23:10Speaker 3: Like, how do you handle being someone that probably gets
- 23:12Speaker 3: offered a lot of advice or like unsolicited feedback?
- 23:16Speaker 1: It's okay, I mean I think you kind of go
- 23:19Speaker 1: to the core of it, like, is this someone just
- 23:22Speaker 1: like man'splaining for the sake of like talking or something,
- 23:26Speaker 1: or is this like someone who genuinely cares about me
- 23:29Speaker 1: and is trying to, you know, offer me something that
- 23:32Speaker 1: can make me better. Most people are doing it with
- 23:35Speaker 1: really good intentions, and so you latch on and go, okay,
- 23:37Speaker 1: like I can find something here that's useful.
- 23:39Speaker 2: For me, something in the midst of everything.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Okay, So we talked about twenty twenty one being excited
- 23:46Speaker 3: for racing. Right now, if you had an opportunity to
- 23:50Speaker 3: look back at des in March, being the wise days
- 23:54Speaker 3: you are in December, and you could offer her one
- 23:58Speaker 3: piece of advice, what do you tell her leading into
- 24:03Speaker 3: this pandemic.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Don't go out too hard, We don't know where the
- 24:06Speaker 1: finish line is, and you don't want to be exhausted
- 24:11Speaker 1: from doing puzzles right away. Space them out.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Space those puzzles out, space them out. Does what anything
- 24:19Speaker 3: else you want to offer the hurdler is going into
- 24:21Speaker 3: a new year?
- 24:22Speaker 2: Any optimism, anything you got?
- 24:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think it's I said, it's a
- 24:26Speaker 1: fresh page and new opportunity. And that doesn't have to
- 24:29Speaker 1: be the turn of the calendar year. It can be
- 24:32Speaker 1: every single day. You know, you get to show up
- 24:34Speaker 1: and see what the day's got for you and try
- 24:37Speaker 1: to embrace the good and learn from the bad.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Does Thanks so much for your time and forgetting together
- 24:42Speaker 3: with me. How do the hurdlers, if they don't already,
- 24:44Speaker 3: which I'm sure most of them do, keep up with you,
- 24:47Speaker 3: follow along with you, give me all the details.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm on the Twitter and the Instagram at dez
- 24:55Speaker 1: Underscore Linden and you probably need to have some coffee
- 24:59Speaker 1: to keep up with all of it. So go to
- 25:01Speaker 1: coffeebe lt dot com and get some delicious roasted beans.
- 25:05Speaker 3: I'm over at Emilia's Body and at Hurdle Podcast.
