- [warm] This is NewsCard Daily for Saturday January 10, 2026 ... the biggest stories from Australia and around the world in just minutes. — — [serious] We begin in Victoria where dangerous bushfires are tearing through parts of the state. Catastrophic fire conditions are in place... with extreme heat, high winds and dry fuels combining to create a volatile situation. In the state’s biggest blaze, nearly two dozen properties in the town of Ruffy are destroyed... and a family of three is still unaccounted for in Longwood. Firefighters are battling more than a dozen blazes as temperatures soar... while in New South Wales, an intense heatwave is pushing conditions to the brink and sparking grass fires around Wagga Wagga. Authorities urge residents in high‑risk areas to follow emergency alerts, have a rapid evacuation plan... and avoid travel through fire‑affected zones unless absolutely essential. — — [serious] In Canberra... cost‑of‑living pressures edge a little higher for public transport users. From today, bus and light rail fares across the ACT increase by around 2.75 percent... in line with inflation. Peak adult MyWay fares rise from about $3.32 to $3.41... with similar percentage jumps for concession, tertiary and school student tickets. The ACT Government argues the increase helps maintain service quality and cover operational costs... but comes as many households are already stretched by rent, mortgages and groceries. To soften the blow, the territory is offering free travel on Friday and Saturday nights after 6pm through summer... aimed at supporting the night‑time economy and easing hip‑pocket pain for social trips. — — [serious] Staying with the fires... the human toll across southeastern Australia is becoming clearer. In rural towns across Victoria and southern New South Wales, homes are lost... sheds, fencing and livestock wiped out in fast‑moving grass and forest fires. Local communities describe “hectic” conditions as flames jump roads and embers travel kilometres ahead of the fire front. Emergency shelters are open, with volunteers providing food, clothing and mental health support... but access roads remain cut in some areas, slowing damage assessments. For Australians watching from other states... this is another reminder to check bushfire plans, clear properties of fuel, and prepare go‑bags as summer risk peaks. — — [serious] In Melbourne... the extreme heat is also feeding concerns about the power grid and health system. Demand for air conditioning is pushing electricity usage towards summer highs... raising the risk of localised outages if infrastructure fails. Hospitals and ambulance services are on alert for heat‑related illness... particularly among older Australians, young children and people with chronic conditions. Health authorities urge people to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor exertion in the hottest part of the day... check on neighbours and older relatives... and never leave children or pets in parked cars, even for a short time. — — [curious] Now to our region... where climate and security are again intersecting in Asia and the Pacific. Recent fire and heat extremes in Australia come as Pacific Island nations renew calls for stronger regional action on climate change. Leaders across the Pacific warn that rising temperatures, more intense weather and sea‑level rise are already displacing communities... damaging agriculture and threatening long‑term habitability of low‑lying atolls. For Australia, that means growing pressure to cut emissions faster, back clean energy in the region... and support disaster resilience so neighbours are better prepared for fires, cyclones and floods. — — [urgent] Meanwhile in the United States... tensions flare after an immigration enforcement shooting in Minneapolis. A woman is shot dead by an ICE officer during an operation... sparking protests and a sharp political backlash over use of force and accountability. Demonstrators gather in the streets demanding an independent investigation and wider reform of federal immigration enforcement. For Australian listeners, this feeds into a broader global debate about policing, protest rights and the treatment of migrants... issues that also shape our own policies on detention, border control and community safety. — — [warm] That’s NewsCard Daily.
