Transcript
- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17For Advent 2025 we are in a series called Brought to the
- 0:21Light, Advent for all who need it.
- 0:23This series is looking at the themes of Advent and how Jesus
- 0:26comes to us all. You can find more information
- 0:29about our church at fumccollingswood.org.
- 0:33Thanks for listening. Our scripture this morning comes
- 0:42from the book of Luke, chapter one verse, starting in verse 39.
- 0:50A few days later, Mary hurried to the Hill Country of Judea to
- 0:54the town where Zechariah lived. She entered the house and
- 0:58greeted Elizabeth. At the sound of Mary's greeting,
- 1:01Elizabeth's child leaped within her and Elizabeth was filled
- 1:05with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth gave a glad crying
- 1:08exclaimed to Mary. God has blessed you above all
- 1:12women, and your child is blessed.
- 1:14Why am I so honored that the Mother of my Lord should visit
- 1:18me? When I heard your greeting my
- 1:20the baby in my womb jumped for joy.
- 1:23You are blessed because you because you believe that the
- 1:26Lord would do what he said. Mary responded.
- 1:31Oh, how my soul praises the Lord, how my spirit rejoices in
- 1:36God my Savior. For He took notice of His lowly
- 1:39servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me
- 1:43blessed. For the mighty One is holy, and
- 1:47He has done great things for me. He shows mercy from generation
- 1:51to generation to all who fear Him.
- 1:54His mighty arm has done tremendous things.
- 1:57He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.
- 2:00He has brought down Princess from their Thrones and exalted
- 2:04the humble. He has filled the hungry with
- 2:06good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.
- 2:10He has helped His servant Israel and remembered to be merciful,
- 2:15for He made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his
- 2:19children forever. Mary stayed with Elizabeth about
- 2:233 months and then went back to her own home.
- 2:27This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 2:33Amen. OK, so I mentioned in Traces of
- 2:37Grace this week, if you if you read that weekly e-mail the
- 2:41church sent sends out, that I'm aware that I've been starting
- 2:47these Advent sermons by referencing Advent song lyrics.
- 2:53Sam, could I get my voice out of these front monitors?
- 2:59I don't need to hear myself. It's bad enough you all have to
- 3:02hear me anyway. It's that choice to to start
- 3:10these Advent sermons with some some songs that maybe are are
- 3:14less familiar to you. It's not been without intention.
- 3:19I love the way that music can capture the essence of something
- 3:25and can give expression to ideas that may be hard to communicate
- 3:30purely in words, right? That's why much of of the music
- 3:35that would properly fit here into this Advent season, it's,
- 3:40it's more somber, right? It's more reflective.
- 3:42It's meant to communicate the longing of this season before we
- 3:49get to the celebration of Christmas, right?
- 3:51In fact, traditionally the season of Advent was similar to
- 3:55the season of Lent. It was a time of reflection and
- 3:59repentance and preparation. It's not just a countdown until
- 4:05Christmas really comes, right? Technically speaking, Christmas
- 4:10isn't just on the 25th of December.
- 4:13Or maybe I should say it isn't only on the 25th of December,
- 4:17December 25th. It's merely the first day of
- 4:20what we've traditionally called the 12 Days of Christmas, right?
- 4:24Which we tend to only think of when we sing about partridges
- 4:28and Lords of leaping and golden rings, right?
- 4:32But Christmas, that celebration would begin on December 25th and
- 4:37it would continue all the way up through January 5th, with
- 4:41January 6th being the Feast of Epiphany when we celebrate that
- 4:45the wise men came from afar to worship the newborn baby who at
- 4:50that point wasn't so newborn. But, but I believe our our
- 4:54celebration of Christmas is better when we don't just rush
- 4:59past the waiting of Advent. When we don't just rush past to
- 5:05to get to Rudolph and Santa or presents under the tree, or even
- 5:12to baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a
- 5:17Manger, right, That waiting is important.
- 5:21All that to say, I've got another song for you this
- 5:25morning. It's the opening song on Andrew
- 5:28Peterson's album Behold the Lamb of God, and it's an invitation
- 5:32to get wrapped up in the story of Christmas, which started long
- 5:37before Bethlehem's Inns were full.
- 5:40Before God spoke to Joseph in a dream, or the Angel Gabriel
- 5:44visited Mary or Zechariah, before there was a king named
- 5:50David or a prophet called Moses, and even before Adam and Eve ate
- 5:56the fruit and sin and death entered the world through their
- 6:00disobedience, Their disobedience.
- 6:02So listen to these words says gather round ye children.
- 6:07Come listen to the old, old story of the power of death
- 6:13undone by an infant born of glory.
- 6:17Son of God, Son of Man, gather around.
- 6:22Remember now how creation held its breath, how it let out a
- 6:26sigh and it filled up the sky with the angels.
- 6:31Son of God, Son of Man. So sing out with joy for the
- 6:36brave little boy who was God, but made himself nothing.
- 6:43He gave up his pride and he came here to die like a man, right?
- 6:50That's, that's the good news, right?
- 6:53That's a story worth celebrating.
- 6:56That's a message not just of hope and peace, but of joy that
- 7:02God came for us. And in the midst of the darkness
- 7:08and the solemnity of Advent, the long nights and the longings,
- 7:14this third week of Advent, it is set aside for rejoicing, to
- 7:19remember that this story that we find ourselves caught up.
- 7:23And it's a story of joy because in the baby Jesus, the infinite
- 7:32God made himself small, right? He emptied himself of his divine
- 7:39rights and privileges, how Andrew Peterson puts it, he gave
- 7:44up his pride, right? Not pride and A and a pride full
- 7:47sense, but those rights, those privileges, so that he could
- 7:50take on our humanity. He could die in our place, and
- 7:56he could bring redemption to humanity.
- 8:00It's good news of great joy, which is for all people in the
- 8:06words of the angels. And we get a taste of that good
- 8:11news of great joy in the story that will read for us this
- 8:16morning, which recounts Mary's encounter with Elizabeth and the
- 8:20yet to be born John the Baptist. And so I want to look at that
- 8:24story this morning a little bit more and and what it teaches us
- 8:28about joy. All right, so beginning in in
- 8:33Luke chapter one, verse 39, we pick up a story that was already
- 8:40in the process of being told, right?
- 8:44If we were to read some of the verses just before this, we
- 8:47would see that that Mary has just been visited by the Angel
- 8:52Gabriel, the same messenger Angel who had appeared to
- 8:56Zechariah in the temple. Like we talked about a couple
- 9:00weeks ago. Gabriel comes to Mary and he
- 9:03tells her that she is going to conceive a child by the power of
- 9:08the whole Holy Spirit. And when Mary questions how that
- 9:12could happen since as far as she knew she was still a virgin,
- 9:17Gabriel reveals that Elizabeth who who was a relative to Mary,
- 9:21we don't know how close, but a relative to Mary.
- 9:26He tells her that Elizabeth was in the sixth month of her own
- 9:31miraculous pregnancy right. Even though she had been barren
- 9:35up until that point, she was going to have a baby as well.
- 9:41And so whether Mary wanted to confirm the angel's words to her
- 9:46by seeing Elizabeth pregnant for herself.
- 9:50Or if Mary wanted to get out of Nazareth for a little while as
- 9:55they figured out how to respond to this this shocking news.
- 10:00Or if she just wanted to share this amazing news that she'd
- 10:04received and, and Mary thought of all the people in the world,
- 10:08maybe Elizabeth might be the one to understand some of what she
- 10:12was going through. Whatever the reason or the
- 10:16motivation, Mary hurries off to Elizabeth and Zechariah.
- 10:24And it makes sense, right? No, no matter what other
- 10:28emotions might have been swirling around within Mary's
- 10:32heart, makes sense that she would want to share the joy of
- 10:38the news that Gabriel had shared with her, right?
- 10:42Because the news wasn't just that Mary was going to have a
- 10:47baby. That happened all the time in
- 10:50the ancient world, just like it does today.
- 10:53The remarkable part of the news was that the baby who would be
- 10:57born to Mary would be the very Son of God, the Messiah that had
- 11:04been promised. The news was that God was going
- 11:08to use Mary to bring His promises to fulfillment.
- 11:12That news filled Mary with joy, and joy like that is meant to be
- 11:19shared, right? Joy in the goodness and
- 11:22faithfulness of God is what drove Mary to Elizabeth.
- 11:27And it drive joy like that. It drives us to one another
- 11:33because there's something deeply communal about joy, right?
- 11:38Have you ever noticed that that joy is multiplied when we
- 11:44celebrate the goodness of God together?
- 11:50We see that a little later in this same story, when after
- 11:53Elizabeth gives birth to John, we're told that Elizabeth's
- 11:57friends and neighbors and her family, they all heard the news
- 12:01and they rejoiced with her at God's mercy in giving her a
- 12:08child. So as Mary comes to Elizabeth's
- 12:12home and she arrives there, she gives her greeting.
- 12:16Luke tells us that the child within Elizabeth leaped within
- 12:22her, leapt within her, and Elizabeth herself is a is then
- 12:27filled with the Holy Spirit, which we need to remember looked
- 12:32different in that time before the Holy Spirit was poured out
- 12:36at Pentecost, right In the Old Testament, the the Spirit was
- 12:39given to people based on their role as a as a prophet, priest,
- 12:44king, a judge, something along those lines.
- 12:46Sometimes he, the Spirit was only given for a a short
- 12:50duration of time while while that person accomplished a
- 12:54certain mission or task that God had assigned to them.
- 12:58But Elizabeth, she's filled with the Holy Spirit and that filling
- 13:04with the Spirit, that joy that wells up within her, she begins
- 13:07to prophecy. She has a message from God about
- 13:12Mary and this child that she is carrying.
- 13:16And she's not just, she's not predicting the future, right?
- 13:20Elizabeth is describing reality from God's own perspective,
- 13:29right? Because while joy is, is meant
- 13:30to be shared with others, sometimes joy can also have this
- 13:35prophetic nature to it. Prophetic in the sense that it
- 13:40can point us to what God is doing and and prepare people for
- 13:46God's coming work what God is about to do.
- 13:50And so when both of these miraculously conceived.
- 13:56Nope. The joy that Elizabeth feels
- 14:00this, this prophecy that she begins to, to share with Mary,
- 14:04she's, she's telling, foretelling the way that God was
- 14:10going to use these miraculously conceived children, Even though
- 14:15it was going to look different, it wasn't going to be the same
- 14:18for each of them. Elizabeth's prophecy pointed
- 14:21forward to the greatness of the child that Mary carried within
- 14:27her womb, the one of whom, John, the baby in Elizabeth's womb,
- 14:31would later say, I baptize with water those who repent of their
- 14:36sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who
- 14:40is greater than I am, so much greater that I'm not even worthy
- 14:44to be his slave and carry his sandals.
- 14:47He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
- 14:54There was this recognition that this child that Mary was
- 14:58carrying God was doing something new.
- 15:05And when Mary hears all this from Elizabeth, she herself is
- 15:10filled with this overflowing joy which comes bubbling up out of
- 15:15Mary in this song of joy that we've come to call the
- 15:20Magnifica, right in this this song of praise to God for all
- 15:26that he's doing. We, we sang part of it earlier
- 15:29as we were singing in worship, Mary's joy in praising God for
- 15:35all that he was doing. It was that joy that reminded
- 15:40her. And her joy reminds us of the
- 15:44bigger picture that God is painting, the larger story of
- 15:49redemption that God is telling, right?
- 15:53We can see how quickly Mary moves from her own experience,
- 15:56she says, For he took notice of this lowly servant girl.
- 16:00But then she moves to the grand sweep of redemptive work that
- 16:04God was working in history, right?
- 16:07His mighty arm has done tremendous things.
- 16:11The good news is that God is at work, that God is bringing mercy
- 16:19and justice and is keeping his promises to his people.
- 16:24And it was not just about Mary and her child, it was about the
- 16:28world. And that good news, it pulled
- 16:33Mary from a small view of what God was doing, a view where
- 16:38where maybe she could have seen herself as the main character of
- 16:43the story. It pulled her into a a broader
- 16:45view that was rooted in the fact that God was bringing his
- 16:50Kingdom near to people. And so this, this third Sunday
- 16:58of Advent where we celebrate that there is joy available to
- 17:04all who need it, it's necessary, right?
- 17:10It's necessary in the midst of this season of reflection and
- 17:16longing, which could easily turn us in on ourselves, or you could
- 17:21easily begin to focus on us and what we need in the moment, what
- 17:25we're longing for, what we need God to do, rather than on the
- 17:31larger story. You see joy, as the Bible talks
- 17:36about it. It isn't just a feeling of
- 17:39happiness that we experience because the circumstances around
- 17:43us are pleasing to us, right? I might feel happy if the Eagles
- 17:50win today, but as we've learned in the last few weeks, that can
- 17:56very easily not go the way we want it to and also effects our
- 18:00feelings of happiness. But joy is different.
- 18:04I I think Mary exemplifies this kind of joy.
- 18:08Remember, she is praising God over this news that she is
- 18:14pregnant with the Son of God. She was pregnant before she was
- 18:23married. That could have gotten her
- 18:25stoned to death. This wasn't exactly an easily
- 18:31explainable situation, right? It never happened before, and it
- 18:36hasn't happened since. This news that we hail as good
- 18:41news of great joy, which shall be for all the people, could
- 18:46have easily been a death sentence for Mary.
- 18:50It could have been easy for her to slide into a sense of of
- 18:53despair or depression if not for the recognition of Elizabeth
- 19:00right that that God was doing something bigger than either of
- 19:07them could have imagined. But it can be difficult or it
- 19:14can be difficult to feel joyful in this holiday season, even
- 19:19though everything around us tells us that it's the most
- 19:22wonderful time of the year. There have been many years when
- 19:31I not only didn't feel joyful at Christmas, I didn't want to feel
- 19:38joyful, right? The the the weight of the world,
- 19:41the weight of lost, the weight of grief.
- 19:45It can all feel like too much sometimes.
- 19:49And there have been times where I couldn't see beyond my own
- 19:53circumstances to see see that joy.
- 19:57And it was exactly in those moments that I most needed joy.
- 20:03Not because I I needed to get past the negative feelings just
- 20:07to feel happy, but because I needed to be reminded that there
- 20:14was a bigger story of redemption that God was writing.
- 20:19Because I needed that joy to speak prophetically to me and
- 20:23point me to something greater that God was doing and was able
- 20:29to do. Because I needed others to come
- 20:34alongside me and share their joy when I was having trouble
- 20:40finding my own joy. This sermon is titled Joy for
- 20:49All Who Need It. And the truth is, that's all of
- 20:53us. We all need joy.
- 21:00But it isn't just an emotion, it's Jesus, right?
- 21:05Jesus is the joy we need. He is the good news that God
- 21:10loves us, that God is working, that God has come for us.
- 21:14And it's joy that reorients us from the stories that we're
- 21:20living in, the small stories we're living in to the to the
- 21:22big story that God is writing. So this morning, you may not
- 21:29feel very joyful this morning. Maybe it was it was tempting to
- 21:36stay in bed. Maybe you did stay in bed and,
- 21:40and we don't blame you for that this morning, but I get it.
- 21:45I, I, I get that it's not always easy to feel joyful here at
- 21:50Christmas. Today, 14th of December, it's
- 21:55the anniversary of one of the hardest days of my life.
- 22:00And I'm not trying to get you to bypass whatever pain or grief or
- 22:05sorrow you might be feeling today.
- 22:09In fact, that's part of why we do the longest night service
- 22:12every week that we're doing next week, specifically for those who
- 22:16are grieving and and struggling with joy at this time of year.
- 22:22But I want to remind you that joy is part of the fruit of the
- 22:26Spirit, right? It's not something that you need
- 22:29to or or even can manufacture within yourself.
- 22:33But if Jesus is joy, I believe he wants to offer himself a new
- 22:41to us today. And you might need a reminder of
- 22:47all that God has done or is doing, not just for you, but for
- 22:53the world. And hopefully this message, this
- 22:57worship service this morning can be part of that.
- 23:02You might need to allow others to to come close to you, to
- 23:06share their joy with you and allow that joy to reorient your
- 23:11heart to the reality of who God is and all that He's doing.
- 23:18Because as as Andrew Peterson's song says, we can sing out with
- 23:24joy for the brave little boy who was God but made himself
- 23:29nothing. He gave up his pride.
- 23:32He came here to die like a man. But that wasn't the end of the
- 23:38story, right? It goes on and the song goes on.
- 23:43It says, therefore God exalted him to the place of highest
- 23:46praises, and he gave him a name above every name, that at the
- 23:51very name of Jesus, Son of God. So in heaven and earth below,
- 23:58every knee would bow in worship, every tongue would proclaim that
- 24:03Jesus, he reigns with the angels.
- 24:09And so whatever you might be going through this morning,
- 24:14whatever might be trying to to get in and steal your joy, if
- 24:20you'll let him in, if you'll find yourself reoriented to the
- 24:25story he's telling, to the bigger story that your life is a
- 24:29part of, if you'll let him, that won't be the end of your story.
- 24:41Would you pray with me this morning?
- 24:46Jesus, we come and we're grateful, Lord, that you have
- 24:54given yourself to us, that you were willing to leave all that
- 25:04was yours to enter into not just this world, but into our
- 25:12brokenness and our sin. You came to redeem us.
- 25:20You came to to pull us back into that larger story that you're
- 25:25telling, that in this season of Advent, would you meet us again?
- 25:38Would you fill us with yourself? And in filling us with yourself,
- 25:43would you fill us with joy? Joy that speaks prophetically to
- 25:51the world around us. Joy that reorients our heart and
- 25:55reminds us of the larger story that you're telling.
- 26:00Joy that isn't dependent on the circumstances we find ourselves
- 26:06in today or tomorrow, but a joy that comes only from you.
- 26:16So we give you ourselves this morning, Jesus, trusting that
- 26:28you're enough and that we can trust in you.
- 26:37So we love you, thank you, We pray, Jesus, all these things in
- 26:42your name, Amen.
