- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Whether it's morning, afternoon, or evening, thank you for taking some time to join me here for this episode.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: And today I want to talk about a topic that's a little bit heavier.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's been coming up a lot in client conversations, and so I feel like it's it's it's it's time to bring it to the forefront.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: And it's grief.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: So oftentimes we talk about or think about grief in the form of the loss of a loved one.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: But grief is actually larger than just the loss of a loved one, whether it be in human form or animal form.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: But there are different ways and elements that we can experience grief.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: So if we were to somewhat expand that definition of grief instead of being the loss of a of a loved one, it's actually our response to a loss in general.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: It's an emotional process that we go through when something or someone significant is no longer in our lives.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: So we uh when we're talking about grief, it can include things like yes, the loss of a person, but it also includes things like the loss of a relationship, um, a career change, uh, when our kids grow up and move out of the house.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: So it can be a transition period.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: When we move from one house to another, there can be a sense of grief.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, with aging parents, there can be a sense of grief when we're no longer able to relate to our parents in the same way that we used to, because maybe they're dealing with some health conditions.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: You know, when I mentioned that this has been coming up in conversation, oftentimes what happens in these conversations with clients is they don't notice it or they they're not naming it as grief.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Instead, it's just this this thing is happening to me and they almost poo-poo it because they don't recognize the deep sense of loss that they're having with it.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: So, for instance, even with some of my clients whose kids have have moved on, whether they're moving to college or moving out of the house, there is a sense of grief with that transition, but some of them are also grieving lost time.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: So, for some parents, for instance, who have maybe they're noticing that they were working, uh working to provide for their children, and they're now having a sense of um loss over time in terms of they'll say things like comedy, I didn't spend enough time with my kids when they were little.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: And that comes up a lot in terms of fear, too, is I want to make sure I spend enough time with my kids.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: But grief can really we experience it in so many aspects of our life.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: And it's important to start addressing it and call it out for what it is, that that there is a process that we have to go through when we go through some type of loss.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: And so oftentimes I will hear if I start naming it as grief, the responses um, well, it's not a big deal.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: It's it's fine, you know.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Um, like for instance, a transition from um working to retirement.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: We'll talk about it, and maybe a client will say to me, Well, that's you know, it's not like I lost somebody.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: It's just, you know, I'm no longer working.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: And so I almost minimize it.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: But here's the thing: your feelings matter.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: They deserve attention, they deserve the respect, they deserve to be processed.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: And allowing yourself to feel, allowing yourself to process through the loss of whatever it is that you've lost is really important to being able to continue to move forward.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: And when we don't process our grief and we just sort of say, I need to get over it, we're not really learning to live with it.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Instead, we're pushing it away.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: And one thing that I really truly believe in is we have to go towards the feelings that we have instead of away from them.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: We have to give ourselves permission to understand them on that deeper level.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: And grief is one of those things that we, as we understand it, we recognize that that loss is not going to go away.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be with us, but we learn to live with the loss instead of trying to escape it.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: And so when you're thinking about how you process their grief, journaling is a huge positive in being able to process what you might be um feeling and the thoughts that might be coming up around it.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Um, in terms of taking care of yourself, self-care practices are really important, spending time uh mindfully coming back to the present moment, you know, finding time to just take care of the things that are important to you, finding things that bring you joy are are really important.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: When you're grieving the loss of a like a relationship, for instance, it's important to start rebuilding some rituals for yourself.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: So rebuilding a new norm for yourself.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, seeking support.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: You know, when when you're going through loss, when you're going through grief, finding somebody who can support you through the process is really important because when we think about the the shadows of grief, when we think about not processing through it, when we do that, what we're actually doing is keeping ourselves from being able to grow and expand.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: So if you're noticing any of this resonates, or you're noticing that maybe there's a possibility that you've gone through loss and you haven't been able to name it as grief.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: I wonder what could be possible for you if you're able to actually acknowledge it for what it is and really start processing through it for the loss that it is in your life.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: And what can you take from the experience that you had?
