Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time. Here we go.
- 0:02This month in February of 2025, we are doing a podcast about
- 0:06podcast. We want to introduce you to
- 0:08other track and field themed podcasts that are out there that
- 0:11might be great for your listening pleasure.
- 0:14So all month we're introducing a new podcast each and every day,
- 0:17showing you who they are, what they are, how they are, why they
- 0:20got started and even their favorite episodes and most
- 0:23popular. And hopefully this adds to your
- 0:26podcast listening library. So here we go.
- 0:28Let's get started with today's podcast about podcast.
- 0:31All right, let's get into it today as we do a podcast about
- 0:35podcast, learning about other shows out there that might have
- 0:37interest to you. Why don't we get started?
- 0:39Why don't we do it a 32nd, 30,000 foot level introduction
- 0:43of yourself. Tell us your name, all that kind
- 0:45of good stuff, and tell us the name of the podcast that we're
- 0:47talking about today. All right, my name is Vance
- 0:50Johnson and I my podcast is going to be text Attract Bad,
- 0:55pretty much covering track and field news around the world.
- 1:00Also cover youth athletics, youth track and field cover
- 1:05needs, promote athletes, things of that sort.
- 1:09So the name Texas track dad. So I'd like to ask, ask the
- 1:13significance of the name, but you probably packed all your
- 1:16significance into that name. Let's go ahead and make some
- 1:18assumptions. It's about track.
- 1:19There's an assumption, probably focus in Texas assumption.
- 1:23Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Correct.
- 1:25Yeah, yeah, of course. I'm from Texas, this app, it
- 1:30developed my daughter, she run track or whatever.
- 1:34So not to get it get into it too much, but you know, Texas has a
- 1:40wide range of athletes that need exposure.
- 1:44A lot of time they don't get the exposure because it's so many of
- 1:47them. So that's why I created this
- 1:50podcast to help get those athletes name out there as well.
- 1:54Well, you hit the name the nail on the head, right?
- 1:56Texas track. And you mentioned your daughter
- 1:58runs Dad boy, I don't know. I like simplicity and I I love
- 2:02that man. That's really cool.
- 2:04Tell us about what kind of style are you typically doing?
- 2:07Meaning is this a solo podcast? Are you having guests on?
- 2:11What's kind of the average style we could expect?
- 2:13Yeah, I'm a lone wolf most of the time.
- 2:17But yeah, I have guests on there.
- 2:19I have trainers, coaches, of course, I bring athletes on
- 2:25there every year. I always pitch the unsigned
- 2:30singer. I do a show for them.
- 2:33I actually have a space on Twitter.
- 2:36Last week turned out really well, really well, surprisingly
- 2:40well. And we have some, a lot of
- 2:43coaches to come in there from D1 to NINAI or whatever.
- 2:49But yeah, I talked to trainers, athletes, anybody who liked
- 2:54track and field is always welcome on my show.
- 2:57I love that, and you're probably your two or three worst
- 3:00performing episodes have been the ones where you've had me on
- 3:02your show, so. I get it.
- 3:03That was a good one. That was a good show.
- 3:05That was a good show. Tell us what is your average
- 3:09length? I know they can vary on a mini
- 3:10Max but on average what could we expect time wise?
- 3:15I'd have had shows from 15 minutes to three hours.
- 3:22I know myself and Coach Bond, we was on the podcast and we was
- 3:28going on like 4 hours. So yeah.
- 3:32But the average you looking at? Yeah, on average, you looking at
- 3:35Bob 30 minutes to an hour, depending on who's on the show.
- 3:39Great. Love that.
- 3:41When did you start it? And you, you kind of got into
- 3:43this, but I'd like to press it a little bit here.
- 3:46Why did you start the podcast? What was the motivation?
- 3:48So when did you start and what was the motivation?
- 3:50Yeah, so quite like my daughter. She's running track.
- 3:54She's been running track for years.
- 3:55And what? I was always at the meet and I
- 3:58always tell this story was that LSU was that a youth meet?
- 4:03I was watching the 200 and this young lady won that race or
- 4:07whatever. And she was so excited that she
- 4:10won the race. And I mean she, she won the big
- 4:14time. So I went home, you know, and I
- 4:16was on social media, I was like, hey, nobody, nobody's talking
- 4:20about this young lady. She did really well and she was
- 4:22really excited about it. So I'm like, you know what, I'm
- 4:25always at these meets. I can, hey, let, let me start a
- 4:28podcast. So the next day, man, I, I
- 4:31looked up, I think it was Anchor FM.
- 4:34So I, I started recording on there and I'm just like, hey,
- 4:38I'm just going to talk about this young lady.
- 4:40If nobody listened to it, Oh well.
- 4:43So I recorded it and I woke up the next day and I had like 30
- 4:46views and people come in and I was like, what?
- 4:51So I just took it from there and, and supporters like you and
- 4:55the track and field community, it's, it's like just really just
- 4:59taking off. Is it really taking off?
- 5:01How long ago was that? That was what, two years ago?
- 5:04OK, by 2 1/2? By 2 1/2 years ago, we're going
- 5:07into the third year. And you really focused again,
- 5:09you've had other subjects and stuff like that, but your real
- 5:12focus from an outside, from a listener here is the the high
- 5:16school senior, the high school athlete recruiting, how they get
- 5:19recruited, the things that are happening there has been and
- 5:22that sounds kind of what it even started out.
- 5:23So you've kind of kept, would you say you kept your motivation
- 5:27that the subject matter kind of the same all the way through
- 5:29these past couple years? Yeah, and, and let me say this
- 5:32too, I really hit hard on recruiting.
- 5:34Make sure the athletes have their profiles that are right,
- 5:37make sure they're getting their questionnaires and make sure
- 5:40they send in emails as well. And like those unsigned senior
- 5:46shows I have, I didn't have and I get such a big response from
- 5:51the coaches. I have athletes who send me DM
- 5:54saying, hey, thank you. I got a scholarship offer.
- 5:58This coach seen you see me on your show.
- 6:01So that let me know there. I'm doing my job, you know, so
- 6:05it it works really well. That's really cool, man.
- 6:07I love that, Vince. You know, in business we have
- 6:10what's called an ideal customer profile.
- 6:13So it's like here for Gil. Lots of different people will
- 6:16order from us. Like we have moms and dads
- 6:18that'll order starting blocks or discuses.
- 6:20We sell the contractors, architects, athletic directors.
- 6:23But our ideal customer profile, like when we're thinking about
- 6:27new products, marketing, what shows to attend is the high
- 6:30school and college track coach. The same can be said for a
- 6:35podcast that many, many different people might choose to
- 6:37listen to your podcast, parents, coaches, athletes, people like
- 6:41me, etcetera. But you're, you're really
- 6:43targeting a certain ideal listener profile.
- 6:46Who's the ideal listener profile?
- 6:48The person that's going to get the most out of your podcast
- 6:50overall I. Think right now, I think the
- 6:55parents of the high schoolers and the parents of the, the
- 7:00seniors that are, that are going into colleges.
- 7:05And I feel I got, I tracked a, a lot of high school coaches too
- 7:11on, on some of the stuff I'll talk about.
- 7:13But I would say that my main target, the feedback I've been
- 7:18getting is from like parents, because like some of the topics
- 7:22I covered, they, they didn't know, they didn't know about,
- 7:25they didn't know that was going on.
- 7:26And you know, they'll, they're like, hey, thank you for talking
- 7:30about this. I didn't know about it.
- 7:32Can you talk about it more? And that's when I go, OK, I told
- 7:36you everything I know, let me go out here and find a professional
- 7:39and I'll bring them in and they give them more feedback on that.
- 7:42But yeah, I would say the high school parents, man, they
- 7:46really, man, they, they really enjoy the show and man, the, the
- 7:51feedback I get from them, man, is really heartwarming, you
- 7:54know? I love that topic of recruiting
- 7:56because you're right, parents need to know more, High school
- 7:58coaches need to know more, the athletes need to know more.
- 8:00And by the way, the the college coaches have to keep their pulse
- 8:02on what parents and kids and high school coaches so they need
- 8:05to learn. So you kind of have this great
- 8:07environment around the whole transition of high school to
- 8:10college that that's awesome. When when you look at over these
- 8:13past two years, this next question is kind of a maybe A2
- 8:16parter. What has been the most popular
- 8:19episode? And and then kind of adjacent to
- 8:21it because it it's not necessarily the same answer
- 8:23here. What's been your favorite
- 8:24episode, Whether it was the the guest or the topic or whatever,
- 8:28Maybe it was interviewing your daughter.
- 8:30I don't know. I don't want to get into a
- 8:31family squabble here. But what's been maybe the most
- 8:33popular and what's maybe been your favorite episode?
- 8:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course. You know, me and my daughter, we
- 8:39always have fun when I bring her on the show.
- 8:42That's always my favorite. We really don't get, we laugh
- 8:45most of the time when she on there.
- 8:48It's always fun talking to her. Lots of inside jokes.
- 8:50Yeah, A. Lot, a lot of inside jokes, but
- 8:54I I would say this is an older episode is one.
- 8:58Another one of my favorites is with Christine Mallard.
- 9:02She's up at USC now, man. She's so articulate, man.
- 9:06And she's, she's just an overall good person, you know, and her
- 9:12and our family, man both. When I first started this, man,
- 9:16I was just like, I didn't know where, you know, the direction
- 9:20it was heading. I just knew I love track and
- 9:22field and I wanted to talk to the track and field community
- 9:26about it, man and man. I reached out when, because I've
- 9:29been following Christine ever since she was like in middle
- 9:32school or whatever, and she was signed up with USCUSC.
- 9:36So I reached out, you know, to her and her parents.
- 9:40I'm like, I went, you know, you, you about to sign.
- 9:42You know what they, man, they invited me out to the signing
- 9:46and everything, man. Yeah, yeah, I went out there,
- 9:48man. I got to take pictures with her
- 9:50and man got to talk to the family, man.
- 9:52But that I would say that's probably one of my best, man.
- 9:55Just to see her progress progress at USC, man is pretty
- 10:00awesome. That's pretty cool.
- 10:01You have to keep that going. You know, she goes, yeah, that's
- 10:04really cool. Love that you know, our
- 10:06listeners, some do listen to every episode from episode #1
- 10:10all the way through where we are today.
- 10:11But most kind of go in and out, right?
- 10:13Depending on the topic or the guest or even the time of year
- 10:16for them. But for you as the host, you've
- 10:18been there behind the mic on every single episode over these
- 10:22past two to going on three years here.
- 10:24What have you learned being a podcast hoster?
- 10:26You're a better podcast hoster today than you were when you
- 10:28first started. What have you learned that you
- 10:30didn't necessarily think was going to be part of this
- 10:32journey? Man, just being myself and you
- 10:36know, just being myself. And when I started that, man, I,
- 10:39I always wanted to keep it like that, you know, and it's just
- 10:44like the more I be myself is it just takes off even more, you
- 10:50know, And it, it's just like I can record like a 10 minute show
- 10:55just giving basic information and not even think about the
- 10:59views. And I go back and look at it
- 11:01like 500 views on it. I'm like, geez, I didn't think
- 11:05it's going to take off like that.
- 11:06But, but for me, man, just just being myself, man, and just
- 11:11being open to people opinions. And I will, I always stress this
- 11:17on my show. You know, what I'm talking about
- 11:21is just my opinion, you know, and all opinions are valued and
- 11:26respected on my show. And I think that goes really
- 11:29well because I have really good conversations with a lot of
- 11:33good, you know, coaches or whatnot and parents.
- 11:35And I think that's, you know, I think that helps a lot.
- 11:38You're the original. We listen and we don't judge.
- 11:41You're the original. Yeah, Yeah, exactly.
- 11:43Yeah. I think it's a great lesson,
- 11:45Vance, and everything that we do for everybody listening and for
- 11:48you yourself. Sometimes we think we have to
- 11:50portray what others want us to be or say or do or look like.
- 11:54And at the end of the day, authenticity, Trump's
- 11:57everything. Yeah, that's what we're really
- 11:59looking for is who are you? That's why I should be
- 12:02religious. I really love that you've kind
- 12:04of grown into that through these past couple years.
- 12:07Last two questions here. Where can we find the show?
- 12:10What what are your main channels?
- 12:11Are you on any you mentioned spaces which is is unique, maybe
- 12:15YouTube tell us kind of where all the different avenues we can
- 12:17find the show? Yeah, yeah, of course, of course
- 12:20you can. My main source is going to be
- 12:22YouTube. I'm always building my YouTube.
- 12:24If you go on YouTube, you can put in Texas track that podcast,
- 12:28it can pull it up there. Just go ahead and hit that
- 12:30subscribe. Note the button, of course, I'm
- 12:33on Twitter X, whichever 1 you want to call it.
- 12:38But yeah, I'm on there. That's that's probably like my
- 12:41mains next to YouTube. My Twitter's really taking off.
- 12:45So I'm on there a lot if you want like current, current
- 12:49updates with me, you probably you'll find it on Twitter before
- 12:52anything else. So if you go to Twitter, you can
- 12:55put it in, you can put in Texas track that.
- 12:57You can also follow me there. And I'm also on Facebook.
- 13:03I'm on there, same name, text attract dad.
- 13:05I'm on LinkedIn as well, Text attract dad.
- 13:08And I'm also on Instagram. You can follow me there as well.
- 13:14And you put your YouTube show on podcast as well.
- 13:17So because you mentioned Anchor, which is now Spotify for
- 13:20creators or Spotify for podcasts.
- 13:21Yeah, yeah. So you're on Apple and yeah,
- 13:23yeah, yeah, Spotify, etcetera. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:26Also, so my Anchor FM got transitioned over to Buzz Sprout
- 13:33with Feed, Yeah, which feeds through Spotify, Apple podcast.
- 13:41It's like 10 others, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:44But you're. You're on those two.
- 13:45You're on quote, UN quote all of them at that, Yeah.
- 13:48Perfect. Yeah, Yeah.
- 13:49All right. Last question is, you know, we
- 13:51know the average podcast listener listens to between 7:00
- 13:54and 10:00 different shows. I'm gonna assume since you
- 13:56create a podcast, maybe you listen to podcasts.
- 13:58What's your favorite podcast? That's not what we're trying to
- 14:01learn here a little bit. That's not your own and that's
- 14:03not track related. What do you listen to when
- 14:06you're not talking about track? I'm laughing because I listen to
- 14:10this podcast everyday. It's called the Bubba dub show.
- 14:13The Bubba dub show What is that? Oh, he he he's actually from
- 14:18Dallas area. It's a sports podcast and he
- 14:24talk about sports and he always use the word trash.
- 14:29And I mean I, I it kind of starts my day off or whatever,
- 14:33but I I watch it everyday. Shout out to Bubba dub man, I
- 14:36love that. That's cool.
- 14:38That's cool. I love that.
- 14:39Help us explore other podcasts. The Bubba Dub, the trash podcast
- 14:42of Bubba dub. I love it.
- 14:43All right, listener, you can see by your podcast that we're
- 14:47almost done here. So here is my challenge to you.
- 14:50Press pause right now. Use the same app that you're
- 14:53listening to right now and just type in Texas track Dad and
- 14:56you'll see his show. If you're a YouTube person, go
- 14:58to YouTube Texas tracking dad, I'm ruining your whole branding
- 15:03here, Texas track dad. And then of course, Twitter, you
- 15:05know my favorite place, you can see him there as well and check
- 15:09out those spaces. I need to learn more about that
- 15:11and start that as well. But here's my challenge.
- 15:13So you know, he's got 2 plus years worth of content here.
- 15:17So kind of the way I like to explore new podcast is 1 is go
- 15:20check out the ones that he talked about, the ones that's
- 15:22kind of his favorite and his most popular, right?
- 15:24So he talked about the discus thrower, talked about time with
- 15:26his daughter. Maybe go check check out one of
- 15:28those back in his library and then go check out his latest
- 15:30episode because that'll kind of give you the style flavor that
- 15:33he's working with in today. But go check that out.
- 15:35Always hit that subscribe button.
- 15:37That way you'll know when his next episodes come out and
- 15:39you'll be the the first ones to know.
- 15:40But I hope this show is another possibility for you and your
- 15:44podcast listening. We appreciate podcasters like
- 15:46fans that are helping uplift in our sport and our athletes and
- 15:50specifically in the niche that he's at.
- 15:51It's it's highly valuable. So thanks for being here.
- 15:53Go check out Texas track dad and we'll see you again tomorrow.
- 15:56See you guys.
