Latest / BREAK/FIX the Motorsports & Vehicle Enthusiast Variety Show / What Should I Buy? - Wagon Edition: GTM’s Ultimate Long Roof Debate
Transcript
- 0:00Our panel of brake fix petrol heads are back for another rousing.
- 0:03What should I buy debate using unique shopping criteria?
- 0:07They are challenged to find our first time collector the best vehicle that
- 0:11will make their friends go Where do you get that or what the hell is wrong
- 0:14with you at the next cars and coffee?
- 0:20What's up everyone, it's your host brad and with me as always is
- 0:22my co host eric So GTM Northeast Region Chief Harry is looking for
- 0:28a new car, specifically a wagon.
- 0:31So we thought wouldn't it be fun to rally the troops and play
- 0:34another round of what should I buy?
- 0:36Wagons edition.
- 0:43So Harry, why don't you tell us why you'd like to become a member of
- 0:46the long roof society by telling us what you're replacing and
- 0:49laying out your shopping criteria.
- 0:51Okay.
- 0:52So currently the only vehicle my wife and I have is a 99 four runner.
- 0:57Third gen.
- 0:58Best gen.
- 0:59We're replacing a mini four door that we leased.
- 1:03Good car, not a great car.
- 1:05Definitely looking for something a little bigger.
- 1:07My requirements are kind of unique because my wife is really hard on rims.
- 1:12Something with a big sidewall is really important, which
- 1:15is hard to find in nice cars.
- 1:17The higher you get in the model, the bigger the rim, the smaller the tire.
- 1:21So, looking for some big tires, not big rims.
- 1:27Looking for something that says I've got class, but not money.
- 1:30Oddly enough, going to customers houses and being seen around
- 1:33town, being in the small business.
- 1:35It's important to not be too flashy, but not looking like you're broke.
- 1:39So that's where the mini came in last time.
- 1:42That's also really important to us.
- 1:44Normally I like the lease cars because I don't like to get committed
- 1:47to anything outside of my wife.
- 1:49I like three years, maybe two years and change it out for something else.
- 1:54All right.
- 1:54So those are pretty much for our requirements.
- 1:56I don't really have anything else.
- 1:57Don't need four wheel drive.
- 1:58I got, we got the four runner.
- 1:59I've got a bunch of trucks.
- 2:01Yeah, that's about it.
- 2:02Do you have a dollar requirement, Harry?
- 2:05So looking like you have class, but not money, that is the dollar requirement.
- 2:10So it's probably somewhere in that 30 to 50 range.
- 2:14Anything more than 50 to me would be, you know, I'd love to own a Merck
- 2:19wagon, but it's just too much money.
- 2:23Is there a age?
- 2:24Does it have to be within the last five years, seven years, three years, 10 years?
- 2:28Are you looking new, used, any of those types of requirements?
- 2:33So the current fleet is my work truck, which is new, but beat,
- 2:37it's already got 33, 000, the 99 forerunner, and we have a 74 Alfa Romeo.
- 2:42So that is the current fleet.
- 2:44So something that is new in the last, maybe just off lease would
- 2:48be as old as I'm willing to go.
- 2:50So basically I'm looking for a new car and we'll be really comfortable on road trips.
- 2:55A parameter that I didn't mention earlier, like, Being able to do five,
- 2:59600 miles at a pretty good clip.
- 3:02All right.
- 3:02All right.
- 3:02All right.
- 3:03Now that we've properly chummed the water, the piranhas, I mean, the rest
- 3:07of tonight's panel of GTM members, we'll submit some cars for you to consider.
- 3:11But before we get into it, I'd like to introduce Crutch, Mike Crutchfield.
- 3:16We've got his lovely wife, Chrissy, definitely the better half.
- 3:19We've got hazmat.
- 3:21We've got Tanya hailing from Texas.
- 3:24We've got Andrew Mason.
- 3:25We've got our newcomer to the show, Rob Lors, and then of course you've
- 3:28met our Northeast Region Chief, Harry.
- 3:31All right, who wants to chime in first?
- 3:33Who's got a card for Harry?
- 3:34I've already got three or four, but I want to hear what
- 3:37the peanut gallery has to say.
- 3:38Before we start, there's one thing I have to point out.
- 3:41There's been a long standing internal debate, well, let's call it what
- 3:46it is, it's an argument, within GTM about the differences between a
- 3:50wagon, a hatchback, and a liftback.
- 3:52While some might lump all of these cars together, we don't.
- 3:56Therefore, for tonight's purposes, to be considered a wagon, the vehicle
- 4:01must be built with a D pillar.
- 4:03Vehicles like the VW GTI or the Subaru Impreza, though wagon like, are considered
- 4:09hatchbacks and therefore disqualified.
- 4:11And with that, let's get into it.
- 4:13Given that criteria, your suite of available wagons has gotten
- 4:17very small over the years.
- 4:19We've got, really, the Buick Regal Tourex, which is I think it's, it's
- 4:25actually a very, a very attractive car.
- 4:27The golf sport wagon, which ended production in 2019, which is still
- 4:33available, new on dealer lots, as well as the all wheel drive version
- 4:37of that, which it's, you know, a neat little gimmick for them to sell more.
- 4:40But the problem I have with the newer Volkswagen wagons is they shop the roof
- 4:45line on those wagons so much with the mark sevens that it makes putting anything
- 4:50large in the back of that lift gate.
- 4:52Uh, really difficult.
- 4:53I have a feeling the Buick has a similar problem, but I'm not sure
- 4:56it's as pronounced as the Volkswagen.
- 4:57Are you saying I don't fit in the back of the Volkswagens?
- 5:01You do in pieces.
- 5:04You might not fit in the mark 7s in the back seat But and the mark 6 has
- 5:08just ended too far too long ago for the criteria, unfortunately I guess
- 5:12another criteria that I didn't mention is the fact that we own a fleet of
- 5:15trucks, and I also own my pickup truck, so Capacity of a wagon isn't really,
- 5:20like, we don't have to put shit in it.
- 5:22We have other trucks to do most of the heavy hauling.
- 5:25I do like just having the gen the space in general for grocery getting and whatnot.
- 5:30Like, I like having the space versus having a grocery getter.
- 5:33And the Buick Regal X is currently leading the charge, and I can't believe it.
- 5:36I've never ever.
- 5:37Owned, actually I owned one GMC, but I've never owned a GM vehicle before
- 5:42outside of that one piece of crap truck.
- 5:44Well, I mean, we, we actually have, we've had wagons and we have a Passat sedan
- 5:49right now, because unfortunately the U.
- 5:50S.
- 5:51was, was cursed to not getting the wagon.
- 5:53But we actually have found that the trunk in the Passat holds a similar volume to
- 5:59what the back of our Jetta wagon held.
- 6:02Because the trunk is just massive while it's nice to have the larger opening if
- 6:07having that big empty cavernous space that fits large items isn't as big a
- 6:11deal, you know, looking at one of the sedans with a larger trunk for a grocery
- 6:15getter could still solve your problem.
- 6:17All right.
- 6:17So I'm going to throw it over to Chrissy because I want to hear what
- 6:20the, the, the other half of the Crutchfield dynasty has to say.
- 6:24I feel like he sold a lot of my stuff.
- 6:26So I think that under that 50k mark, especially if it's like an end of a
- 6:32lease, you can probably look at a Volvo, like a V70, which are nice, and they've
- 6:39updated, they've gotten away from the boxiness of it, which is nice too.
- 6:42I do like the Buick, but at the same time, it's a little expensive
- 6:46for a Buick, in my opinion.
- 6:49And I do like the Golf Wagon, but like Mike said, the roofline's lower.
- 6:54However, you and Justine are shorter than Mike.
- 6:57So I don't think that that's a problem.
- 6:59Sorry, hon.
- 7:02Rob, you're new.
- 7:03You're fresh meat.
- 7:04Let's go for it.
- 7:05The Regal Torax actually only starts at like just under 30k.
- 7:08So price wise, it sort of fits right in there.
- 7:11I was also going to say the only counteract to the sedan is I saw obviously
- 7:15that you have a dog and dogs don't like trunks, dogs, love hatchbacks and wagons.
- 7:20So I know for like, for my family, we had a Jetta that my wife loved
- 7:24and we finally got rid of it and got her a Subaru Outback, which.
- 7:28I would not suggest only because they switched all the CVTs,
- 7:31and that's a pile of crap.
- 7:32But our Outback is a manual, so it's actually a ton of fun.
- 7:36And the dog loves being in the back of that thing, and the kids
- 7:39love sliding around in it too.
- 7:41But yeah, I'd say the Buick should be the leading contender.
- 7:44I think if you go to the Volvo, it starts edging into that.
- 7:47Like you have old money sort of feel as opposed to just looking nice.
- 7:51It looks like you loaded a close friend.
- 7:54Classmates, parents recently got rid of their Mazda three and picked up
- 7:58a pre owned, you know, V 70 wagon.
- 8:00And literally the first joke on the first camping trip was like, Oh, who
- 8:03died and left you a pile of money?
- 8:05Because it just seemed like that was the joke to make when you got a Volvo wagon.
- 8:09So the Buick wagon, we saw it at one hiking trip and it is
- 8:12gorgeous when properly outfitted.
- 8:15Like, we walked up to it and my wife and I literally stopped in our tracks
- 8:18and both of us were like, what is that?
- 8:21Because at a distance across the way, it actually has a little bit of a look of
- 8:24the, uh, the Jaguar wagons they made for a while that were pretty sweet looking, even
- 8:28though they, I wouldn't necessarily want one, but they were pretty sweet looking.
- 8:31So it has a tinge of that Jaguar wagon look, a tinge of that Volvo
- 8:34wagon look, but it's a Buick.
- 8:36So no one thinks that you're rolling in dough.
- 8:39And it looks pretty fly and has meets all the criteria.
- 8:42So it's tough to beat that option.
- 8:44Is the Volvo an old money look or just an old look?
- 8:47That's what does fly mean?
- 8:50If you have to ask, you are not, you're pretty fly for a white guy.
- 8:53Exactly.
- 8:54It looked pretty pretty awesome.
- 8:56I'll put it that way.
- 8:57It looked sleek and Futuristic even I would say so bigger guys.
- 9:01It was in it was pretty awesome So I I would agree with you there rob.
- 9:05I really thought the the regal was a handsome car until I saw it
- 9:08in person And the photographs of it Were much better than when I
- 9:14first saw it at the DC auto show a couple of years ago when it debuted.
- 9:17And the reason I say that is the concept Regal Torex was different in the rear.
- 9:22And what really turned me off is I didn't like the chrome and I didn't
- 9:25like the way it felt like the artist pencil broke as he got to the D pillar.
- 9:30And it's like, well, I don't really know what to do here.
- 9:32So I'm just going to continue this chrome from the front all
- 9:35the way to the tail lights.
- 9:36And if I owned one of those and my wife considered one, as a
- 9:40matter of fact, And we ultimately ended up with a Cadillac instead.
- 9:44The first thing she said was, that needs to go away.
- 9:47Meaning, make that black, right?
- 9:49Because it's just a little bit ostentatious, because the rest of
- 9:52the car doesn't have any chrome, except for that large arch from
- 9:56the A pillar to the D pillar.
- 9:58That's, that's a GM thing.
- 9:59Just throw too much chrome everywhere.
- 10:01You buy a GM car if you want to look good.
- 10:03You gotta, gotta get rid of the chrome.
- 10:04GM loves the chrome.
- 10:05Styling is, is a personal thing.
- 10:07It's very subjective.
- 10:08I still think it, at the right angles, it is a good looking car, but it is
- 10:12deceivingly large, and I think that's another thing that I didn't realize
- 10:16from the photographs until I saw it.
- 10:18It's a very, very big car.
- 10:20Yeah, I think, I think it's similar length to the V70.
- 10:23Which is not a small Volvo either.
- 10:25No, it's bigger than the V 70.
- 10:26It's huge.
- 10:28Is it?
- 10:28Yeah.
- 10:29Yeah, definitely.
- 10:29It was.
- 10:30It had been backed into a spot so that that front threequarter
- 10:32view, it is a gorgeous vehicle.
- 10:34Like, I mean, it's one of those, you definitely, you know, you stop yourself
- 10:38in a parking lot to look at it, which is.
- 10:40Amazing to see, let's call a spade a spade.
- 10:42We're saying this about a Buick, which is kind of ridiculous for a
- 10:45Buick made in the last 20 years.
- 10:46Like that's the car that your grandmother happened to have
- 10:48bought that you kind of laugh at.
- 10:50That's about it.
- 10:50It's a Vauxhall.
- 10:51Let's yeah, let's be serious, right?
- 10:53Yeah, you mean an Opel, right?
- 10:55Yeah, right.
- 10:57It's made, it's made in Germany.
- 10:58So checks that box.
- 11:01Other than the aesthetics of the Regal wagon, the other downside to the Regal,
- 11:04why we didn't get one was when we looked at it from an economy standpoint, right?
- 11:10Regal is so big and heavy and it's powered by a two liter turbo.
- 11:13Like everything is nowadays, the mileage was worse than the Cadillac we had.
- 11:18And so at that point, Jess, what was the mileage?
- 11:21It was.
- 11:22So the Cadillac, the best they could ever do was like 24 and
- 11:25the Regal was worse than that.
- 11:27So it's not great.
- 11:29But if you don't care about fuel economy, then enjoy yourself.
- 11:33I would own a Mazda 500.
- 11:34You get bigger tires on it.
- 11:36Like, everything's an 18 and it goes to a 19 and that's why it's disqualified.
- 11:40Like, I'd own a hatchback.
- 11:41You can't get bigger rims on it.
- 11:43I have to immediately swap out.
- 11:44Okay, Andrew.
- 11:45So what else do you want to say other than Buick?
- 11:49Well, I was going to say, I was going to say Outback.
- 11:52I didn't know about the CVT.
- 11:53I was not familiar with that, but up until hearing that, I mean, a Subaru
- 11:58is definitely not ostentatious.
- 12:00It definitely blends in.
- 12:02And if you need someone to work on it, it's a Subaru.
- 12:05They're like Legos.
- 12:07So that was going to be my out of the box pick, but yeah, I mean, just, While
- 12:10Robin and uh Crutch were talking I was looking up that Buick and yeah, it's
- 12:14a good looking car And I don't know.
- 12:16I'd definitely get one get a driving one, but no, I don't have anything else We
- 12:20went to the local Subaru dealer and he's been bothering me for probably about six
- 12:24months now like borderline harassment That guy put a bad taste in my mouth.
- 12:29Was he sending you care packages full of granola and Birkenstocks too?
- 12:33It was pretty close.
- 12:34If he knew where I lived, he probably would have.
- 12:37During the pandemic, like the, the heat of the moment, he's like, we're still open.
- 12:41You can come in and order a car from the parking lot.
- 12:43I was like, Dave, I don't want your car.
- 12:45Thank you.
- 12:45I mean, the, the Outbacks are, are, I mean, we love ours and
- 12:49everybody who owns one loves them.
- 12:50I mean, there's a reason everybody who has an Outback buys another
- 12:53Outback because they're great.
- 12:54And just in the last, Eight months or almost a year, you can get the,
- 13:00whatever they call it, the XT model that has the turbocharged motor.
- 13:02So instead of dealing with that 178 horsepower, you get the 268
- 13:06horsepower one and it's only like a three or four mile per gallon hit.
- 13:10And so it's actually gets out of its own way.
- 13:12But the, the one complaint from anyone who's driven one, and I've
- 13:16had them as rental cars a few times 'cause I'll, I'll seek them out 'cause
- 13:18they feel familiar, which is nice.
- 13:20And they're much better than most of the crap you can get is
- 13:23just that CBT drives you insane.
- 13:25I mean, you just, you're driving it and you're like, everything about
- 13:28it just annoys me as I'm driving it.
- 13:30The biggest thing about Subaru is I have a shop down the road from me at
- 13:36a friend of mine, it's a Subaru tuner.
- 13:38The beauty of those cars is if you haven't done a head gasket,
- 13:42wait, you'll do one soon.
- 13:43That's been the biggest problem with Subarus is they are just notoriously
- 13:48unreliable in that respect.
- 13:49They don't have the durability.
- 13:51And a lot of them that I see for whatever reason, they just They rot,
- 13:56you know, which really surprises me.
- 13:57I know that's probably less of an issue for Harry because he's not,
- 14:00you know, not probably not keeping it for 20 years, but those things
- 14:04rot and it's not, not a good thing.
- 14:07Ours is a 98.
- 14:09We've had zero problems with that.
- 14:11The valve cover gaskets I've had to do, but I've done them
- 14:13myself because as Andrew said, like they're a joke to work on.
- 14:16I drove up a pair of ramps and half an hour later they were both replaced.
- 14:20In a week I'm replacing the power steering pump and mine's got 170, 000 miles on it.
- 14:26And that's like the first three things I've had to replace are those things.
- 14:30I should also say that the requirement for this car is about 5, 000 miles a year.
- 14:34My wife works from home and doesn't leave the house.
- 14:37That's kind of where the leasing comes in because we can get a
- 14:3910, 000 mile lease and be okay.
- 14:42She doesn't drive.
- 14:43Worst case scenario we just start driving my truck at the end.
- 14:46Why don't you just go, why don't you just go old school and buy
- 14:48some, uh, classic station wagon?
- 14:51Yeah, you need a, you need a late 80s grand marquee with
- 14:55wood paneling on the side.
- 14:56Actually, what I really want is one of those old Merc diesel wagons.
- 14:59That's what I want in the driveway.
- 15:02Nice 300 TD.
- 15:03Well, the nice thing about those is you can do those with veggie oil.
- 15:07Yeah, because I have so much veggie oil laying around, I'm just gonna
- 15:09be able to fill up all the time.
- 15:12Let's throw another choice out there.
- 15:13So, I mean, there are some old school options and I think we'll get to that,
- 15:16but let's, let's stay on this in the last two years, potentially be able
- 15:20to lease it or off lease type of car.
- 15:22Does anybody else have anything in the hopper?
- 15:24I have a few, but continue.
- 15:26I want to hear from Tanya because she is, she's against wagons.
- 15:30She's anti wagon.
- 15:32She's, she's perfect for this.
- 15:34I want to hear what she has to say.
- 15:36Not anti wagon.
- 15:39I'm anti people that pretend like wagons are the savior to, to
- 15:45everything when in fact wagons have unfortunately gone to the wayside
- 15:51because SUVs have become more popular.
- 15:53So there's been people that are like, Oh, I need a wagon because how could I
- 15:57possibly fit my groceries in a Camry?
- 15:59And it's like, you can fit your groceries for like six months in your Camry.
- 16:03Let's be real here.
- 16:04That's not why you want a wagon.
- 16:05Just admit that you like the styling and the aesthetics and the
- 16:09performance that a wagon brings you versus something like an SUV.
- 16:14Because unfortunately, I'm not in a station in life where I need
- 16:18an SUV, and I don't want one.
- 16:21An SUV is, they're kind of ugly, they're really big, they're fuel inefficient,
- 16:26they're not performance vehicles.
- 16:27You're not going to go trundling down mountain roads, really taking turns.
- 16:31You can still do that in a wagon, because it's an SUV.
- 16:33It's a really long car and my, my problem with wagons is just people that aren't
- 16:39honest about why they like a wagon.
- 16:41It's like, they're embarrassed to say they like a wagon.
- 16:44Just admit that you like the styling of a wagon.
- 16:46It's fine.
- 16:47I don't hate all of them.
- 16:48I mean, some of them are ugly, like, like the old ones.
- 16:52Okay.
- 16:53Who's out there trying to get one of those, those Partridge
- 16:56Family wood panel style wagons?
- 16:58I would love a Buick Roadmaster!
- 17:00No, no, I don't want no Oldsmobile whatever they were, okay?
- 17:04But, you know, a nice tastefully lowered A4 wagon with big rims and tinted windows?
- 17:12I mean, yes, please, I would definitely drive one of those if you gave it to me.
- 17:15Am I gonna go choose one?
- 17:17No.
- 17:17But I mean, there, there you have it.
- 17:20At the end of the day, depending what your use case is, this day and
- 17:24age, unfortunately, an SUV trumps.
- 17:28Out wagons and that's why they're disappearing because you get the
- 17:32same cargo space if not more Have more than the small tune in 2.
- 17:375 nuclear family You know you get third row seating and granted the
- 17:42third row isn't necessarily comfortable But for small children they can fit
- 17:46back there and you can still carry some things in the trunk You get all
- 17:50that space you get four wheel drive.
- 17:51You can also not get four wheel drive You got ground clearance so you can
- 17:54go up into the mountains and the dirt roads and all that stuff and
- 17:57honestly You're not going to take your low riding wagon over tree trunks.
- 18:02Uh, that's an exaggeration.
- 18:04You're probably not going to take your SUV either.
- 18:05Maybe a Bronco, but you know, whatever, but it's not as, it's
- 18:09not as practical anymore and, and, and they're just disappearing.
- 18:12So my biggest gripe again, is just people that aren't forthright
- 18:15with why they like wagons.
- 18:17For us, it's very unique.
- 18:19Cause like we want to be the, the ideal wagon owner just for the aesthetic.
- 18:24I just don't like sedans.
- 18:27They don't take my boxes and I don't rev my motor.
- 18:30I appreciate you saying that.
- 18:33But to Tanya's point, I did some fact checking with respect to wagons because,
- 18:37you know, as she stated, a matter of factly SUVs are taking, you know, they've
- 18:41been taking over for 15 years now.
- 18:43Right.
- 18:44And so as I was doing my research in 2010, so going back just 10 years in the
- 18:51United States, This doesn't include like, you know, as Rob said, there were some
- 18:55Jaguars and some one off wagons that they sold all of three of in the United States.
- 19:00But in 2010, there were 16 wagons available that you could choose from.
- 19:06That's pretty decent considering the number of manufacturers that
- 19:08actually bring cars to the States.
- 19:11In 2015, that number reduced by 50%.
- 19:16Five years later, we're down to eight wagons available.
- 19:19In 2019, six and one of those six, I actually don't even consider it a
- 19:25wagon and we'll go over that later.
- 19:27So your choices are getting slimmer and slimmer and slimmer every day.
- 19:31But Harry hit on something with the sidewall thing with the tires, right?
- 19:35And I've heard the stories about the bent wheels, and I bought a set off of you,
- 19:40and yeah, they were, they were rough.
- 19:42I would say, if that's a major thing, then maybe the wagon isn't the right choice,
- 19:48and something like a Grand Cherokee, or the new Bronco, or something else is the
- 19:54right choice, because it's the same size.
- 19:55The Bronco is in the works.
- 19:57When I can get a Bronco, the Bronco is something I do want.
- 20:00Put a down payment on one today.
- 20:02Yeah, and get one in 2022, but I need a vehicle today.
- 20:07Like I'm ready to buy next week.
- 20:09Gotcha.
- 20:10I have my sales guy from work all primed up.
- 20:14I think his dealership owns 42 different marquees.
- 20:17So I basically can get whatever I want.
- 20:20I just need to text him and say, this is the car I want.
- 20:22Please have it ready for me on this date.
- 20:24Are you limited to your manufacturer?
- 20:27Because If you don't want to go full SUV, there's obviously the small compact
- 20:31crossover type SUVs, the HRVs, the Honda HRVs of the world, if you will.
- 20:37So we were right before COVID like really shuts it down.
- 20:41We were about to buy a CX 5, really close.
- 20:44It's still probably the clubhouse leader for us.
- 20:48That really red CX 5 is just a really nice car.
- 20:52It's a lifted wagon, as Tiny kind of alluded to, didn't all out say
- 20:56it, but with that unibody chassis on those cars, those crossovers,
- 21:00they're just lifted wagon.
- 21:01So that's kind of where we were leaning towards actually staying
- 21:04down range in that CX 5, so we didn't get the bigger tires, specifically.
- 21:11I mean, she is literally brutal.
- 21:13So I found out why though, my wife is only five foot two, maybe she actually can't
- 21:19see the potholes in rural Pennsylvania.
- 21:23So she hits them because she's so short.
- 21:25It's like a little old lady driving, so she can't see the potholes
- 21:28and she just runs into them.
- 21:29And then I think of the TDI, we had a Volkswagen TDI for years.
- 21:33She, she went through four or five rims in a year.
- 21:36I bought her 16s.
- 21:38To make it through the rest of our uh, I might have a better suggestion leave
- 21:44pennsylvania Yeah, the problem is there's just not a lot of choices out there
- 21:48right now for wagons and you're right you know, I think your better option is
- 21:53to find a small to mid sized crossover Because it fills all the same needs
- 22:01without having to get yourself stuck in a niche, which is the wagons right now.
- 22:06You know, as Eric was saying, you know, they went from, what,
- 22:0918 to nine wagons in 2019.
- 22:13But, you know, if you look at my favorite kind of cars, which are
- 22:16coupes, and particularly three door coupes, You know, they don't exist.
- 22:20Volkswagen doesn't sell those anymore.
- 22:22So crutch, man said a Regal or the Buick Regal Rob said the Buick Regal, Mr.
- 22:30Mason, I believe said the Buick Regal in a bunch of other words, uh, has Matt.
- 22:35Hasn't said anything.
- 22:38Tanya said, don't buy a wagon.
- 22:42Chrissy said, Mike stole her thunder.
- 22:44Eric, do you want to chime in or should I go?
- 22:46Well, I have a legitimate answer and then I have some other alternatives,
- 22:52but if we're sticking within the last two years, no, I don't
- 22:55want the alternatives for sure.
- 22:56We're definitely going to get there because they're good.
- 22:58Let me tell you, if we're sticking within the last two years, if you want something
- 23:02that isn't too bougie, that is going to be a great all around car, doesn't suck
- 23:08fuel, like it's going out of style, can handle the weather up in Pennsylvania.
- 23:13I would tell you to look at the A4 Allroad.
- 23:15It's a better looking car than the Regal.
- 23:17As good looking as the Regal is, like Tanya said, you tint the windows
- 23:21and put a set of wheels and tires, if you were doing that, on an A4.
- 23:25Great car.
- 23:26Great handling car.
- 23:27Excellent all wheel drive.
- 23:28Yeah, and the A4 doesn't say you have a ton of money.
- 23:31It just says that you wanted that car.
- 23:33It's like owning the Beamer Wagon.
- 23:36Maybe exudes a little money, but just says you really wanted a wagon.
- 23:40The, the all roads were always big money.
- 23:42They rivaled the, uh, the S four is in certain respects because,
- 23:45you know, the S four was slammed on the ground station wagon.
- 23:49The all road was up in the air station wagon.
- 23:52The, the, the terrifying thing about those cars is it's an Audi.
- 23:56And I have a friend, he bought an S four wagon.
- 24:01He has so far sunk 30, 000 into it.
- 24:05And it still isn't done.
- 24:06Because it needed turbos and it needed a motor and it needed, there's
- 24:12a laundry list, you know, and, and that's, that's kind of the problem
- 24:15with those cars is, well, see, I think Matt is talking about the a six all
- 24:19road, which the older all roads were notorious for having all kinds of issues,
- 24:24mechanical issues, electrical issues.
- 24:27That's back when Audi was junk.
- 24:29Now, Audi is just a little junky, but they were real serious junk back then.
- 24:33I think Eric is talking about the new a four based all road, which is
- 24:37supposed to be a much better car.
- 24:38And it uses a two liter turbo GTI motor.
- 24:41So it's a commodity engine, which is much cheaper.
- 24:44And if something does break, it's a couple hundred bucks instead
- 24:46of a couple thousand dollars.
- 24:48And I'm not exaggerating there, but it is a.
- 24:50Decent price differential.
- 24:52If you look at what the A6 was and the A6 doesn't make my list for that very reason.
- 24:56And it's also massive.
- 24:58I mean, it might as well be a yacht in comparison to the A4 and they did make
- 25:02a newer version of the A6 all road, but again, it's just too big for me.
- 25:06And when you start comparing lengths and you're getting up above, you know,
- 25:09195 inches, I mean, you're, you're, You're starting to get into, you know,
- 25:13explorer territory, you know, in terms of sizes and, and vehicles that are
- 25:17bigger than a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
- 25:19I mean, stuff, it just, at that point, why do you need the wagon?
- 25:22Just, just buy an SUV.
- 25:23It's just too big, you know, in my opinion, but to each his own, right.
- 25:27Just to continue on that thought, if we go back to 2015 and you were considering
- 25:33something just a little bit older, maybe picking it up, use something from CarMax.
- 25:37I would tell you.
- 25:38Out of the list of the eight cars, or maybe ten cars that were available
- 25:42in 2015, knowing the criteria now that you have, I would actually lean
- 25:48you towards the Honda Crosstour.
- 25:50Because, again, a soft car, big car, lift back, with big puffy balloon tires, comes
- 25:58in all wheel drive, Same old k motor that was like in the tsx and and that kind of
- 26:02thing also came with a b6 And it's cheap.
- 26:06It's a honda Acura made one too.
- 26:09Yeah, I was going to touch on to add the class factor You would get the acura zdx,
- 26:16which is essentially the cross tour In acura trim and it's a little bit better
- 26:20I think it's better looking it's more angular more I guess they were a lot more
- 26:26expensive than the cross tours, but I think that would be a similar alternative.
- 26:31They didn't sell.
- 26:32No.
- 26:32So they're harder to find.
- 26:34Our old bookkeeper had one.
- 26:35I haven't seen any of them other than that.
- 26:37Yeah.
- 26:37The cross tour.
- 26:38I got a neighbor with a cross door and that has not aged.
- 26:41Well, looks wise.
- 26:42I agree from a, from a usability standpoint, it's perfect, right?
- 26:45It's balloon tires.
- 26:47It's it's, they use it to putz around, you know, a few thousand
- 26:49miles a year at most in it.
- 26:51And.
- 26:51You know, they have, uh, they have a dog and a daughter.
- 26:54So like the, that, like the tiniest point, right.
- 26:56The difference in my brain for a wagon is if you have a dog that's bigger than
- 27:00a shih tzu, a wagon helps a ton because then you can actually have a passenger
- 27:04and a dog if you want to go out camping and stuff, or keep at least your interior
- 27:07slightly clean, but yeah, that's the, the Crosstor, it's a very usable functional
- 27:12vehicle, but it's, it's looks have not, I mean, I see it every day when I walk my
- 27:15dog outside and it's, It hasn't aged well.
- 27:18I find it interesting as a car guy, but it's definitely more car guy interesting
- 27:22than traditional decent looking car.
- 27:24The Acura looks pretty solid though.
- 27:26I'm absolutely anal when it comes to cleaning my cars.
- 27:30All the vehicles get maintained outside of the Miata.
- 27:33You guys have seen the Miata.
- 27:34The Miata is beat.
- 27:36It's currently sitting outside.
- 27:37Hasn't been started in four months.
- 27:39I think Harry's Miata is still carrying the same mud from 2018's
- 27:44Summer Bash, shouldn't it know?
- 27:46It is!
- 27:47The rest of my vehicles are all maintained.
- 27:49I really, really love detailing cars when I get to take Saturday
- 27:53and Sunday off from work.
- 27:56That is what I do in my free time to enjoy myself is, uh, detail cars.
- 28:01So I really love it.
- 28:02That's why we bought the forerunner just so I didn't have a car that I, my wife
- 28:06could drive it as much as she wanted and ruin it and not wash it and take
- 28:10the dogs out and not have me freak out.
- 28:13So, Eric, what else is on your list?
- 28:17I'm not getting into the good ones yet, but if I go back another five
- 28:21years, into the 2010s, there's some really interesting stuff there.
- 28:24Now, I know it's out of Harry's criteria, but I want to dive into the used car
- 28:29market just a little bit, just for fun.
- 28:31Yeah, me too.
- 28:32I want to dive in too.
- 28:33We could maybe own one of those and a new car.
- 28:36So, when you go All possibilities.
- 28:37When you go back to 2010, you have all sorts of weird one-offs, like the
- 28:42Lexus, you know, wagons and the, the Mazda sixes and all that kind of stuff.
- 28:48But you also have some enthusiast cars.
- 28:50In 2010, you've got the three series BMWs, the five series BMWs, the Mercks, you
- 28:55know, the eClass, all that kind of stuff.
- 28:57You've got a plethora of Volvos V 50 70, XC 70, which is still
- 29:02a wagon before it became an SUV.
- 29:04But you also have stuff like the Cadillac CTS station wagon,
- 29:08which I mean if you're a car guy, that's the holy grail of wagons.
- 29:13Good luck finding one of those.
- 29:15Knew they were 60 grand, used their 70.
- 29:18But you don't have to get the V.
- 29:19That's true, that was my point.
- 29:21But they're also tiny.
- 29:22Knew they were 60 and used their don't exist.
- 29:26Itty bitty cars.
- 29:27They're teeny weeny cars inside.
- 29:29They're They're normal size on the outside.
- 29:31Every auto show I would go sit in those things because I was excited
- 29:34as an enthusiast to get in one.
- 29:36Even the passenger seat was too small and I'm barely six feet tall.
- 29:39It's a tiny, tiny car.
- 29:41It really depends.
- 29:42But in the, speaking of the Cadillac, I would tell you having owned one,
- 29:47the SRX is not that much bigger.
- 29:51It actually isn't really bigger at all than the CTS wagon.
- 29:54It's up higher, bigger sidewalls.
- 29:56It drives like a Cadillac It's got a GM engine that's been
- 30:00around for a hundred years.
- 30:02The gas mileage was the only deterrent on the SRX.
- 30:06So I like the angular style looks, it looks like an elongated kind of
- 30:10stretched out CTS and you can have one of those any day of the week.
- 30:14I will tell you, do a 2015 or a 2016 the last year.
- 30:19Uh, like we had, because that's when they improved the Q system
- 30:22and a lot of the interior stuff.
- 30:24It's a lot better than the early ones.
- 30:25They just took care of some of the problems and those cars
- 30:27are relatively inexpensive.
- 30:29If you wanted to go into that crossover and have a little bit more posh, I would,
- 30:34I would tell you that as an option.
- 30:37I'm 5'10 just for the record.
- 30:385'10 I fit in every vehicle.
- 30:39I'm 5'11 I've instructed, I've instructed in Lotuses, I fit in every vehicle made.
- 30:45Yeah, no, and I normally can squeeze, I mean, I have a Miata,
- 30:48it is what it is, but like, that car just felt claustrophobic coming
- 30:51out of any other vehicle I sat in.
- 30:53Including like a Boxer or Cayman like you sit in that CTSV and it's
- 30:56like you're in you're in like this weird little shell It's the weirdest.
- 31:00It's it's too small.
- 31:01It's comically small So what I will say though is I mean if you take all
- 31:06the you know The Kia Rondos and the Hyundai Elantra Touring and all that
- 31:10garbage and throw them away They scream money Elantra Touring I have a friend
- 31:16with they actually like that car a lot.
- 31:17I do too and she raves about it But what I'm What else is in there is what
- 31:22Mike was getting at is if you go back to 2010, there is a Passat wagon, right?
- 31:27So if you're looking for a bigger Volkswagen, stuff like that.
- 31:30But I think you just, there's some other cars in that mix that
- 31:33I think we've forgotten about.
- 31:35And again, I was looking at, at these just block years to say
- 31:38what car was sold in that year.
- 31:40I don't know when they ended.
- 31:41I didn't do that much research to say, okay, they, they, they made the forever.
- 31:46I mean, When did they stop making the TSX wagon?
- 31:49That was actually a good looking car.
- 31:51If I look, if they made the Crosstour through 15, I think they just sunsetted
- 31:54the Crosstour a couple of years ago.
- 31:56So it would probably be at the same time.
- 31:58It looks like 2014 was the last.
- 32:00Okay.
- 32:01You mean the European Honda Accord Wagon?
- 32:04It was a pretty decent, as wagons go, it wasn't bad.
- 32:08It wasn't nearly as weird as the, uh, was it the mid 90s Honda Accord Wagon?
- 32:15It was the weird, angular, you know, flip up headlight front end,
- 32:20and this modern, rounded rear end that didn't match the front at all.
- 32:25If you go back to that 2010, I haven't researched this, like you have, Eric, but
- 32:29Like my favorite looking wagon of sort of that 2000 or 2000 2010 2015 world is the
- 32:35sob wagons 9 5 wagon would be pretty good 9 5 wagons are really attractive cars.
- 32:40They drive pretty well You can still get them with a stick if you wanted you don't
- 32:43have to But they had tons of space They have like a little bit of the quirkiness
- 32:47with the key on the floor and stuff And they drove drove really well and most
- 32:51of those sobs came with pretty big side walls that you would have any problems
- 32:55You know getting the smaller tires and those things And those SOB wagons are,
- 32:59I think, really, really attractive.
- 33:01Harry, did you consider that the essence model of the TourX comes
- 33:05with an in vehicle air ionizer?
- 33:08Oh God.
- 33:08So God, I mean, I dunno if any sobs have that air up to it.
- 33:14Make it air ionizer so it cleans the air as you're in it.
- 33:19So Harry, no matter how funky you are, it's just, that
- 33:21sounds like something I need.
- 33:24Does it kill Covid?
- 33:24So my wife, we we're driving around and my, my at one 50 today, my wife's
- 33:29complaining about my body odor the whole time . 'cause I work outside.
- 33:33I mean, I want to go back to what Andrew said.
- 33:35Now, Andrew, you said that there's an air ionizer.
- 33:37Is that in the Buick or is that built into the essence level trim of the Buick?
- 33:42Okay.
- 33:42So I have a much cheaper solution to this problem of air ionization.
- 33:48I heard the windows down.
- 33:50I heard recently that you can put a scented candle in your center console.
- 33:56And that takes care of the problem.
- 34:03You look at the opportunity right now, because if they market this the right way,
- 34:08and let people know there's an ionizer, but maybe modify it to kill COVID.
- 34:14How about, how about it, it cleans up its own carbon footprint as you drive it.
- 34:18How about that?
- 34:19I'm not a big fan of the, the, the, the old like 1920s robber headlights.
- 34:23It looks like a raccoon on those.
- 34:26They're weird.
- 34:27I thought they were fly cars.
- 34:28I love.
- 34:29I'm trying to look up what years they had those wagons, but those the sub 95.
- 34:33What does fly mean?
- 34:35But harry harry, I I mean i'll sell you i'll sell you my gulf estate, you know
- 34:40It's got a it's got a six cylinder.
- 34:42It's a wagon.
- 34:43You know, it's all good.
- 34:44It's a 2003 though We know of another one coming down the pipe.
- 34:47That's, that's true.
- 34:49Yeah, I think, I'm trying to convince, well actually, she wants old cars,
- 34:54but she can't handle old cars.
- 34:55Every time she drives a 4Runner, she's like, oh it made a clunk.
- 34:58I go, yeah, it's old, it makes clunks.
- 35:00That's what they do, they're old cars.
- 35:02You just have to deal with it.
- 35:03Shuts the door of the Alfa, like, oh it made a noise.
- 35:06Yeah, that's what it does, it's old, it makes noises.
- 35:09Just have the deal with them, so she's really a new car girl.
- 35:12All right, Tanya, this 2009, by the way, for the SOB nine five Wagon,
- 35:16Tanya, you said you had another one not in the 2010 to 2015 range.
- 35:21Oh, I, I don't even care about his criteria.
- 35:23I've got a whole bunch of stuff that I like.
- 35:26Harry B.
- 35:27Damned, his criteria means absolutely zero to me, and I'm about to lay into
- 35:32it, but I want to hear what you got.
- 35:33It's on like Donkey Kong!
- 35:35Come on!
- 35:36So, so Rob stole a little bit of my thunder there, because
- 35:39if we're gonna go older, 9 2 X Arrow, what a good looking wagon.
- 35:47It's a Subaru looking sob.
- 35:49I don't care.
- 35:50It looks better as a so than a Subaru.
- 35:52Yes, it does.
- 35:53Yes it does.
- 35:54And I saw one, like when I was in uh, Colorado the last time, there was a
- 35:58lady just trolling down the highway and I was like, bam, that looks good.
- 36:03I've always really liked the sabers.
- 36:05One of my favorite cars in sedan form is the last 9 5 Arrow that they made.
- 36:11It's just a slick looking car.
- 36:13I had a buddy who bought one of those when he had his first kid and
- 36:16like got it like one year old but brand new on the lot sort of thing.
- 36:20stick.
- 36:21And I was like, if you saw that the next two years, you better call me first.
- 36:24It's a phenomenal car.
- 36:26He didn't, he still has it and he still loves it, but that's a good looking car.
- 36:29I will say the, this, I have worked on a lot of cars over the years and
- 36:33I have never used so many expletives.
- 36:36As when I work on a Swedish car, well, and it's just one of those
- 36:40things that as good looking as they are and whatever, I just can't.
- 36:45Right.
- 36:46And it's the old ones were so easy to work on though.
- 36:49Like I remember like driving somewhere with a buddy and an old 900 and like the
- 36:55shift link it broke and we nursed it in third gear to some like truck stop and
- 37:00bought like literally I think a string.
- 37:02a couple things of bubble gum and some paper clips and we rigged up the shifter
- 37:06so we could get like three or four of the gears for the rest of the way home
- 37:10and we did it from inside the car like you take off one panel and you're like
- 37:13there's the whole linkage we'll just fix it i mean it's so easy to work on
- 37:17the problem with sobs was at that time period socialized medicine because you
- 37:22got six months of time off so You didn't feel like coming in tomorrow, you didn't
- 37:28come in, but Joe, who normally builds transmissions, is putting interiors in.
- 37:33You know, and then Joe doesn't feel like coming in, so the guy who normally
- 37:38mounts tires is building engines.
- 37:39I'm trying to remember when GM sold them.
- 37:41Ten years ago at this point, almost.
- 37:442009, I think, was the last year you could buy a, like, the last
- 37:47model year of an actual Saab.
- 37:49Saab Vegan is really high on my list of fantasy cars, though.
- 37:52I think it's a, I think it's a Viggen, though.
- 37:55It's, it's, it's not plant based.
- 37:58Viggen.
- 37:59Viggen?
- 37:59Vigov?
- 38:01It only, it only runs on biofuel.
- 38:04You can't use regular gas.
- 38:07You know, if, if you forced me to drive a station wagon,
- 38:11there's, there's only one I drive.
- 38:1390 95 impala ss wagon, which doesn't exist But you buy a caprice and you put all
- 38:19the impala stuff on it and those cars are badass You can fit I don't know 12 of your
- 38:25best friends and a keg of beer I think i think mike's got one of those too, right?
- 38:30You got a favorite wagon Oh, yeah, you just take the magnum and buy a hell crate
- 38:34bolt right in I I rented a magnum and With luggage in the back and there were
- 38:40four of us it would wander down the road.
- 38:42I it was You Yes, but how did it do it in autocross Matt?
- 38:47Oh, that would that would have been the Sebring convertible.
- 38:50I rented.
- 38:50Thank you very much I have instructed on track in a magnum
- 38:54wagon It's a big vehicle, but I'm not buying that for a track toy.
- 38:59I'm buying it to put to shame to everyone with their sports cars off
- 39:03the traffic light while I'm hauling four by eight sheets of plywood.
- 39:07See, and that's the other upside to a wagon.
- 39:09It's like the ultimate sleeper.
- 39:12Especially if you don't do anything fancy, but you got something juiced
- 39:15up under the hood, and you just rip off from a, from a, from a light.
- 39:19It's like, did I just get pulled by a wagon?
- 39:23You know, it's, it's, it's like a matter of pride, you know?
- 39:26I got my door split off by a Buick Roadmaster.
- 39:29Yeah, right?
- 39:31I think I'm gonna kick it off here with some Crazy Town.
- 39:34I'm ready.
- 39:34I'm ready.
- 39:35So before I get into it too crazy, I think the Buick Roadmaster is the only
- 39:41Buick Harry should consider, for sure.
- 39:43With a 350, a crate motor, maybe an LSX motor in there somewhere, you know.
- 39:48I agree, also.
- 39:50I saw a Caprice wagon, which is the equivalent, tow in a
- 39:53car hauler with a Camaro on the back of it, and I was in love.
- 39:57That thing was amazing.
- 39:58Does he get to change, does he get to change his last name to Griswold?
- 40:02Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 40:03Yeah, but you put the Impala SS stuff on it and the thing's badass.
- 40:07Yeah, exactly.
- 40:08So my next crazy town car is not too terribly crazy, but I mean, I
- 40:13would consider it's a pair of cars.
- 40:15Either the E63 wagon, Because everybody needs, you know, a 600
- 40:19horsepower wagon or the RS six Avant.
- 40:22I think, I think either one of those, I mean, the fact that it's
- 40:27called an Avant just brings it up to that next level of prestige.
- 40:32One of my employees just bought a B5 Avant S4 for 500 with.
- 40:39Like 70, 000 miles on it.
- 40:43The guy wanted to sell it to someone who would love the car.
- 40:45This kid has been looking for the cars up and down the eastern seaboard
- 40:48for the last four or five years.
- 40:50He just finally got one.
- 40:52It's leaking oil and fluids out of every orifice that you can
- 40:55leak fluids out of, but he has it.
- 40:58As I always said, most honest car ever sold, resale value right on the hood.
- 41:05All right, next it's, it's been touched on, but the V90 Volvo, or if you want to
- 41:10go something with bigger tires, you can do the cross country version, the V90
- 41:15regular wagon, at least when it first came out had to be special ordered.
- 41:19They were only bringing the cross tour, you know, to deal with a lot.
- 41:22So you had to special order the, the non cross, I mean, cross country version.
- 41:26Next I'm going to say a Stelvio and you'll lower it.
- 41:31And you've got an alpha Romeo wagon.
- 41:34I give you that.
- 41:35That's a major points right there.
- 41:37The two of my favorites, uh, Mitsubishi Galant VR four, if they made a wagon
- 41:43version and you can get one right hand drive, I would bring one of those here.
- 41:47Maybe, maybe in Japan, but I've never seen one.
- 41:50Yeah.
- 41:51So you'd have to bring it here.
- 41:52I've seen the Evo wagon, but I haven't seen the.
- 41:55Yeah.
- 41:56So yeah, like an old nineties galant VR for, then I've got two more.
- 42:01One, my all time favorite is the Chevy Nomad.
- 42:06It's the worst looking wagon ever made because you can't put anything in it.
- 42:09You can, you can put horsepower in it and that's all that matters.
- 42:12Yeah, I know.
- 42:14You can put all kinds of horsepower in it.
- 42:16You can put a lot of stereo in it too.
- 42:18And you can fit airbags in it.
- 42:20That's a lot, that's a lot of stuff.
- 42:22That's a lot of stuff.
- 42:23You can fit a lot of things in it.
- 42:24And then That's the, all the most important things
- 42:26that you can fit in a wagon.
- 42:27Yes, horsepower, power and stereo.
- 42:30That's all you need.
- 42:32And then lastly, is something semi serious.
- 42:34Have you thought about a Mach E?
- 42:36It's not a wagon.
- 42:37It's more like a lift back and it's raised or whatever, but I think it
- 42:41would give you that, that class that you're looking for, cause it's brand
- 42:44new, you know, and there aren't, I mean, nobody's got them on the street and
- 42:49I just, I think they're kind of cool.
- 42:50Yeah, it's definitely a consideration.
- 42:52We actually have.
- 42:53access to the Ford fleet program, which gives us premium pricing
- 42:57on all of Ford's products.
- 42:59So Ford is definitely in there.
- 43:01It makes everything more attractive because everything's cheaper for us.
- 43:04Sure.
- 43:06Not a lot cheaper.
- 43:06Just, just a pinch.
- 43:08Just get a wait for the VW buzz.
- 43:12Really?
- 43:12I'm just waiting for Peugeot to make it back to America.
- 43:15So I can get the Gary Busey.
- 43:17What?
- 43:17So you could get a 405 station wagon like back in the 80s.
- 43:22This is what I'm waiting for.
- 43:24I got a Peugeot pepper grinder.
- 43:26What one to match?
- 43:27You could have got a model.
- 43:28You could get a model X there, Harry, with the gullwing doors and all that.
- 43:33Yeah, possibly, probably not, but yeah, maybe, Hey, is the, is the Reliant
- 43:39Robin a wagon or is it just a hatchback?
- 43:42That's a mistake.
- 43:45All right.
- 43:45I was going to say, I don't think Harry has any choice, but to find a crossover.
- 43:50No choice.
- 43:50No.
- 43:50As far as my car, I'd, I'd take the wagon version of my car.
- 43:53If I could, I got a 2016 SS and in Australia.
- 43:59They just make one platform, apparently.
- 44:01And they're like, you can get it however you want it.
- 44:02You want it two doors, four doors, pickup truck, wagon.
- 44:06You want it LS3 or you want it LSA with a blower.
- 44:09Like, they don't care.
- 44:10They'll make it for you.
- 44:11So that would be probably my ultimate wagon.
- 44:14But those aren't here.
- 44:15And I'd say the more realistic option, the one that I've been noodling with Brad
- 44:18for a while, is Find some mid sixties wagon, something like Mopar A Body, GMX
- 44:25platform, something as small as possible.
- 44:28Which those things were actually like curb weighted under 3, 000 pounds.
- 44:31Find something with a dead six in it that I can get for 500 and
- 44:34throw 30, 000 worth of parts at it.
- 44:37And just have some kind of pro touring slash track something.
- 44:41So, that's my fantasy wagon.
- 44:43I saw A Holden HSV wagon when it was in New Zealand.
- 44:48Yeah.
- 44:48And I just, I just stared at it for a while.
- 44:51, full size wagon.
- 44:52Full send the wa the wagons I liked were from the mid seventies.
- 44:56I had a, uh, I had a Chevy Kingswood wagon, full size wagon.
- 45:01I paid $50 for it.
- 45:02Best car I ever bought for 50 bucks.
- 45:05And the coolest thing about it was.
- 45:07You put the key in the, in the back, and you turned it, and if you, you
- 45:11held it, uh, just a little bit, and the window went up into the roof.
- 45:15If you held it, turned it further, the tailgate went into
- 45:18the, uh, sunk into the body.
- 45:20And it was awesome, and it had the third row, it had the third row.
- 45:24We had 14 people in it one night.
- 45:27You know, and it was, you couldn't hurt it.
- 45:30I hit a building in Georgetown and set off the burglar alarm.
- 45:37It's like that scene from Lost Bullet and you guys all were
- 45:40those 14 people dead or alive.
- 45:43We're not sure Next podcast has to just be stories from Matt by the way Is the title
- 45:50of next week's podcast, Y'all be Yippin
- 45:57We touched on all the ones that, like, I mean, we talked about, like, the
- 46:02BMW 5 Series wagons when they existed, the 3 Series, which they finished
- 46:08making last year or the year before.
- 46:12The Volkswagens, what I like that's coming out but not going to be available here
- 46:18is the Arteon Shooting Brake Volkswagen.
- 46:22That's pretty.
- 46:23But also along those lines with the little bit higher price range is the R6 Avant.
- 46:27So, it's the same difference, I imagine.
- 46:30Yeah, and I like my CTS V wagon, but then I was sad to hear that
- 46:34it's actually small inside.
- 46:36So So Mike, you got anything else you want to add to that?
- 46:40Because I think you and I share a similar unicorn that
- 46:43we would appreciate as a wagon.
- 46:45I already know which one it is.
- 46:46Well, I have a kind of an off the wall one that's that hasn't been made
- 46:50for a few years Is basically an old school wagon that they call an suv
- 46:54because of the platform, which is the ford flex Oh that was on my list.
- 46:59I was gonna bring it up because a lot of guys really like the
- 47:02flex I mean think of that harry.
- 47:04I love the flex.
- 47:05My wife said no fuck you That's actually her exact words.
- 47:08You can you can go marry someone else.
- 47:10I I agree.
- 47:11I agree with justice That's ugly.
- 47:14She said that Tim was ugly.
- 47:17I agree with you.
- 47:18What a smart woman you married.
- 47:21Well, I mean, if you want ugly, you just get an HHR.
- 47:24Is that a wagon?
- 47:25I think the HHR is a wagon.
- 47:27We found, we found an episode where the HHR is appropriate.
- 47:33Well it is.
- 47:34Then the PT Cruiser's the same thing, right?
- 47:36Yeah.
- 47:36So, oh my God, you're stealing 'em all.
- 47:38Because the third one in that mess is the PF 500 L, all these.
- 47:42Oh yeah.
- 47:43These travesty Doesn't the PT Cruiser turbo share the
- 47:47same motor as the SRT four?
- 47:48Yes, it's the SRT four four neon.
- 47:50It's a neon wagon.
- 47:51And it's called the GT Cruiser.
- 47:54Thank you very much.
- 47:55Correct.
- 47:56With sticker wood paneling.
- 47:57Yes.
- 47:58Man, I was gonna, I was gonna end with the HHR.
- 48:01You stole my thunder, Mike.
- 48:03Barry, you know, that might be the perfect car for you.
- 48:06The Chevrolet Malibu Max.
- 48:09Oh, I forgot about that gigantic turd.
- 48:12That thing is ugly as sin.
- 48:17Also, light it on fire with a candle.
- 48:19Seriously, I'd rather an Aztec.
- 48:23Right, I'll take two Aztecs.
- 48:26And you can have that thing.
- 48:27And a V Cross!
- 48:28What the fuck was that thing called?
- 48:30The V Cross?
- 48:31The V Cross is awesome!
- 48:34The Max was actually the same chassis as the Pontiac G6, even the Coupe.
- 48:42Because Pontiac was doing their whole wider is better thing still.
- 48:46So they were still doing their whole wider is better, so they wanted
- 48:48the longer wheelbase on the G6.
- 48:51So they took the Malibu Max's wheelbase rather than the
- 48:53Malibu's wheelbase for the G6.
- 48:56The other nice thing actually, and it's kind of the dark secret, is that
- 49:02was in the period where Chevrolet was selling everything as an SS.
- 49:08So you could get a Sonic SS or a Malibu Max SS.
- 49:13Yes.
- 49:13Cavalier SS.
- 49:15What the fuck do you do with a Malibu Max SS?
- 49:17I'm not sure.
- 49:18It's a Cobalt and it does the quarter mile faster than a GT3.
- 49:25Yeah, until you started.
- 49:29Don't be talking smack about that HHR.
- 49:31That is a high quality vehicle, people.
- 49:34That chat went on so damn long and that was horrible.
- 49:37Everything about that whole, the entire thread was horrible.
- 49:42That was the era of so much SS that they made the SSR.
- 49:45I've got a question for you guys.
- 49:49Did they ever make the SSR?
- 49:50A panos wagon.
- 49:52Well, so I had to bring up the hhr because it's sitting behind brad
- 49:56right now Uh, well, that's a nomad.
- 49:59But yeah, oh shit He he's just fired.
- 50:03He's just talking trash, but he knows not to come across my nomad But yes by
- 50:09by our rules I was going to bring it in as an exception because it does have a d
- 50:14pillar It is actually considered a wagon when you look it up And that's in that
- 50:182010 range along with the pt cruiser and the fiat 500 l You quickly replace that.
- 50:24And if you want to be environmentally friendly, you can always go
- 50:27with the Ford C Max Energy.
- 50:31Oh yeah, yeah.
- 50:32Is that, that's actually a wagon?
- 50:34It's not a hatchback?
- 50:35It is considered a wagon.
- 50:36It has an extra window and a d pillar, so yes.
- 50:39It's a, it's a, it's a wagon.
- 50:41I think so does the Mini Clubman too, but Yeah, the Mini Clubman's a wagon as well.
- 50:45I think they're done, I think they're done with Mini's.
- 50:47The Clubman's actually actually, The Mini Clubman's actually, I could
- 50:51lease it again until I could stay over until I could get my Bronco.
- 50:56Cause the Clubman does have that D pillar, I mean, it's a pseudo wagon.
- 51:01And barn doors.
- 51:02I mean, my holy grail of wagons is still like a, I'd rather have like a Volvo 850R.
- 51:07Yeah.
- 51:07You get one of those tinted up and nice wheels and tires.
- 51:10That thing is phenomenal looking brown with a manual.
- 51:14Exactly.
- 51:15I mean, you've got a manual, brown or that weird blue color.
- 51:20The weird blue color, that's all you get money.
- 51:25Like you can get the, what's the other one?
- 51:26The V 70 R or something is the other one.
- 51:29That's like the six speed and 300 horsepower.
- 51:33They made the Camry with the dual, had the dual wipers on the back window.
- 51:37Oh, I know what you're talking about.
- 51:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:40That'd be great.
- 51:42It looks like a hearse from behind.
- 51:44It's terrible.
- 51:46The Magnum looks like a hearse.
- 51:48The Magnum always looks like it's always in silver or black
- 51:53or some other monotone color.
- 51:55Some other color.
- 51:57The Magnum is actually, I think, classified as an SUV.
- 52:00Because SUVs, you know, the manufacturer classifies them as SUVs.
- 52:04But if the floor is it's an SUV because it's on a dodge truck platform like
- 52:09every other dodge ever made No, it's on a mercedes b class platform Yeah, it's the
- 52:13same as a chrysler 300 which I was gonna say you can put the 300 front clip on them
- 52:18I've seen them converted over and it still looks like ass Tonya, you got something?
- 52:22If we're going for Hearst like The Ghostbusters!
- 52:26Well, yes, but no.
- 52:28We want Hearst like and also modern within the last five years.
- 52:35Lincoln M.
- 52:36K.
- 52:37T.
- 52:37Talk about, oh God.
- 52:39Like a hearse.
- 52:40What the hell?
- 52:41I have one of those that lives on the street behind me.
- 52:43There's an older couple that has one of those.
- 52:45I see it every day.
- 52:46I'm trying to remember which one that was.
- 52:48It's the hearse.
- 52:49The hearse.
- 52:50You gotta look it up.
- 52:50The mark t Yeah, the MKT.
- 52:52Oh, Google it.
- 52:53It's, it looks like a hearse.
- 52:54If it's, if it's not the hearse, it's the vehicle escorting the hearse.
- 52:57Yes.
- 52:58I thought that was a Feuderholm exclusive.
- 52:59I didn't know you could actually buy that.
- 53:01No.
- 53:02I just love the, the logo.
- 53:03Like the Mark T was like wedged together funny.
- 53:05So it's like little M, little tiny K, the T over the top.
- 53:08Like, it tried to look stylish and it's just dumb.
- 53:10The best part is when you can get the Mark T Blackwood edition with the pinstriping.
- 53:15Oh my god!
- 53:16Like who thought that was a good idea?
- 53:19Come on.
- 53:19Did you did you ever see the old money man?
- 53:21Old money loves that shit You need to get it with the the boston top the sort
- 53:25of fabric top across the back three quarters of it Even though it's like not
- 53:31That's good, right the boston top right I think that's what it's called Oh shit.
- 53:36My first car was a cutlass supreme coupe That had the back half,
- 53:41the back, just back over the back seat had vinyl over the roof.
- 53:45Yep, Landau.
- 53:47I think, I think it's called the Boston Top.
- 53:49I think that's what they called it.
- 53:50Oh, fuck me.
- 53:51That's so good, sure.
- 53:53It's, it's the Boston Top.
- 53:55So the Landau Top.
- 53:56The Baston.
- 53:58Have you ever seen a CTS, a CTS with one of those?
- 54:00Because I have.
- 54:01Oh, God.
- 54:04So I, you know, I, I'll let Tanya go after me.
- 54:07Cause I got to steal Mike's thunder since he stole mine for the HHR, which where
- 54:11we can revisit as many times as we like, uh, I, as much as I've sworn off BMWs and
- 54:19there's, there's, there's two, I would.
- 54:21Own in my, in my lifetime.
- 54:22If, if I, you know, could find, well, one is not a wagon.
- 54:27It's the Z4M coupe.
- 54:28I like the Z4M coupe is something about that car, but the other one, the other
- 54:33one would be that late, uh, kind of early two thousands Five series wagon.
- 54:40I thought they were very handsome cars that was pre bangle getting
- 54:43his hands on them and ruining them.
- 54:45You know, they were still kind of classy BMW, especially in black
- 54:48with some big, you know, HRE wheels or something like that.
- 54:51Or even M wagon.
- 54:53How nice would that be?
- 54:54That would have been awesome.
- 54:55Wasn't that the last time you could get, you actually could get an M5 touring?
- 54:59Correct.
- 55:00In that, in that style.
- 55:01In that, in that, yeah, generation.
- 55:03They're super rare, but they look fantastic.
- 55:06You know, again, I'm not, I'm not super into BMW camp, but I would definitely
- 55:10check that one off the list, Mike.
- 55:12So I like, I actually like the E60 with the little cat eye taillights
- 55:16that was available as a 550.
- 55:21And that is basically an M5 wagon without some of the M bits.
- 55:25It is a stunning car and I always loved one.
- 55:28But there is one car if literally money was no object and I had
- 55:33all the time in the world to turn wrenches on it with spare engines
- 55:36and parts and everything else.
- 55:37Can I steal your thunder?
- 55:38I'm going to steal your thunder.
- 55:39I get my thunder stolen all the time.
- 55:43Go ahead.
- 55:44No, go ahead.
- 55:45The Passat W8 Wagon?
- 55:48Yeah, with six speed and all wheel drive.
- 55:50You better believe it.
- 55:52I looked for one.
- 55:53I looked pretty hard because I was going to get that instead of the Golf Estate.
- 55:56I just think those cars are super cool.
- 55:58I don't mind 4 liter W8.
- 56:00If it blows up, you put a 4.
- 56:012 Audi motor in its place, it bolts right up.
- 56:03You know, it is two VRs together.
- 56:05You know, that motor sounds odd.
- 56:07And it's just it's cool.
- 56:08It's different.
- 56:09It's very subdued and in the right color scheme with the right
- 56:12wheels It's a very attractive car.
- 56:14So I don't know that that's just me I I guess I like euros and and i'm sure
- 56:17tanya'll back me up on this you go Travel in europe enough, especially over the
- 56:21last decade Wagons were everywhere.
- 56:24It was the hot commodity.
- 56:26It was the thing that everybody had And all diesel Yeah, and if you didn't
- 56:31have a wagon, you had a hatchback.
- 56:32I mean, a sedan and especially SUVs, that was not a thing.
- 56:36Even recently that like my dad was over there with, on a trip with my parents
- 56:40with other set of parents and they had rented a Tiguan with the diesel and a six
- 56:44speed, and my dad was, would kill for one.
- 56:48He came home and he's like, why can't I have a car that gets.
- 56:5140 miles to the gallon, perfectly drives up hills all over the place,
- 56:54easily fits four adults with all the luggage in the world, and was awesome.
- 56:58Because it kills people, allegedly.
- 57:00Yeah, but he, he was like, I wish they would sell it over here.
- 57:03Instead he bought the final generation Forester that you could get with a stick.
- 57:08So he has a six speed Forester that he loves.
- 57:10He's driven it down to Florida and back up.
- 57:12He lives in Massachusetts.
- 57:13So he loves his Forester wagon, but he bought like, the final year he could
- 57:16get a stick on it is what he bought.
- 57:18That one.
- 57:19Because he refuses to ever own a car that has an automatic.
- 57:21So only manuals for him.
- 57:23Good.
- 57:24Good.
- 57:24He's got an A4 manual, like a newish A4 manual on the Forester, and then
- 57:28he has his 1989 11SC from Europe.
- 57:32So Tanya, do you have anything you want to add in there?
- 57:34Wagon you would own?
- 57:35Just like a fantasy thing?
- 57:37Well, first of all, I already own a wagon.
- 57:40It just doesn't have a D pillar.
- 57:44That's kidding.
- 57:45I've got a Golf.
- 57:47But I want to mention a terrible wagon, just for the fun of it.
- 57:51The HHR.
- 57:52No, I'm going to go further back in time and suggest that
- 57:57the Plymouth Reliant Wagon.
- 58:01Oh, come on, what's wrong with the Plymouth Reliant?
- 58:04Definite choice on anybody's wagon list.
- 58:06Let's not forget that.
- 58:07Low blow.
- 58:08Dishonorable mention right there.
- 58:11But if, I mean, I, Yes, but was it used by a Florida man?
- 58:16Probably.
- 58:17Let's be real.
- 58:17Next week there's going to be something.
- 58:21The Saab, the Aero that I mentioned earlier, I mean, that's
- 58:25beautiful, honestly, as a wagon.
- 58:27I would very much enjoy that car.
- 58:31I would also very much enjoy a 2000s vintage RS4 wagon.
- 58:38I particularly like that RS4.
- 58:41Style of the A4s and S4s and done well or done right with the correct body
- 58:47package and wheel choice, et cetera.
- 58:50I mean, to me, they're very good looking.
- 58:53If I was buying today and what's currently available the last couple
- 58:57of years, I, I don't, I don't know.
- 59:01I'd probably go look or an Audi, but I don't know for Harry.
- 59:08I'm leaning towards the idea of just keep the Mini and wait for the Bronco to
- 59:11come out is probably the right decision.
- 59:13Dream Wagon, I want like Tomas I believe Rob is talking about the A6 Allroad with
- 59:19like 1500 horsepower that, that can get through half a session on track before
- 59:24it overheats and needs to come off.
- 59:26But in that half a session, no one can keep up with it.
- 59:28I mean, he's exactly fair, but That thing just hauls.
- 59:33That thing is a freaking rocket ship and sounds amazing at full chat and you got
- 59:39to get rid of the doll back stickers to get some level of sort of sleeperville.
- 59:43But that thing is just on a different planet of awesome.
- 59:46Well, with that, let's get back to what do we think?
- 59:50What do we think Harry should buy, right?
- 59:52That is the premise of this particular episode.
- 59:54What should I buy?
- 59:56So what are we thinking for Harry?
- 59:57Do we have a vote?
- 59:58I mean, just we'll go around the horn real fast and just knee jerk.
- 1:00:01What do you think he should buy?
- 1:00:02All right, let's start with Mike.
- 1:00:03Uh, I mean, if he's sticking wagon, I'd still say Torex.
- 1:00:07Chrissy?
- 1:00:08Matt?
- 1:00:10The Regal is probably the way to go.
- 1:00:14If it's new, it's gotta be the Regal.
- 1:00:16If it's old, go Saab.
- 1:00:19GMs aren't that bad.
- 1:00:20So yeah, the Regal.
- 1:00:22A crossover.
- 1:00:24You have to be a wagon.
- 1:00:25Fine.
- 1:00:26I would go seriously consider the Buick.
- 1:00:29I'm gonna go with the A4 Allroad.
- 1:00:32I'm the oddball out.
- 1:00:33And then Brad.
- 1:00:35Uh, if it's old, I'm going Chevy Nomad.
- 1:00:38If it's new, I'm going Stelvio lowered.
- 1:00:42Because you got to be a true petrol head at some point in your life.
- 1:00:44Exactly.
- 1:00:45Well, he's already got an alpha.
- 1:00:46He's already got an alpha now.
- 1:00:47Yeah, he doesn't need that.
- 1:00:48I have an alpha.
- 1:00:49He's already got that.
- 1:00:50He needs an alpha that doesn't run on Monday and an alpha
- 1:00:53that doesn't run on Tuesday.
- 1:00:54Nice.
- 1:00:55So Harry, is there anything else, anything else you want to talk about?
- 1:00:58No, I think you guys hit everything, uh, way more thorough
- 1:01:02than I thought you were going to.
- 1:01:03This was nice.
- 1:01:04Well, very good.
- 1:01:05I, I'm definitely going to look at the Buick Regal.
- 1:01:07I have not seen it yet.
- 1:01:09It was in the leader house just because.
- 1:01:12It fit all my criterias, being a wagon, and that's what I wanted.
- 1:01:16I didn't want to own an SUV.
- 1:01:18And the listeners are going to tune in next time when we can
- 1:01:21hear all about Harry's new HHR.
- 1:01:24And on that utter disappointment, I think it's time.
- 1:01:29It's time to end.
- 1:01:31So thank you all so much for joining us tonight.
- 1:01:34I hope the listeners out there enjoyed it.
- 1:01:36We never really do come to a decision or a consensus.
- 1:01:39I think this is the closest we've ever gotten.
- 1:01:42And I guess Harry, the answer is Buick.
- 1:01:44So let us know how that goes.
- 1:01:45Roadmaster.
- 1:01:46I'll let you know how the Buick is.
- 1:01:47I'm going to go lease one tomorrow.
- 1:01:48And don't forget your golf clubs.
