Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more disgrace Land in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of disgrace Sland to the other, the backyard to
- 0:39Speaker 1: dig into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are
- 0:43Speaker 1: talking about this week's episode subject the Go Gos. We're
- 0:47Speaker 1: previewing the coming Marilyn Manson episode, getting into some recommendations
- 0:52Speaker 1: and some subversive nineties talk, and we go through your voicemails,
- 0:56Speaker 1: text DMS emails and as always, a whole lot of rosie.
- 0:59Speaker 1: All right, this goes, Let's get into it, all right,
- 1:13Speaker 1: The Go Gos this week's full episode subject of Disgrace.
- 1:16Speaker 1: And they did something that no one has ever done before.
- 1:19Speaker 1: They were the first group of all female musicians to
- 1:21Speaker 1: have a number one album of songs that they wrote themselves.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And that's noteworthy, as we discussed in the episode, because
- 1:28Speaker 1: at the beginning of their career they were told by
- 1:30Speaker 1: music industry insiders, namely record executives, that they couldn't expect
- 1:33Speaker 1: to write their own songs and have a hit album.
- 1:36Speaker 1: But that's exactly what they did. So the obvious question then,
- 1:41Speaker 1: is are the go Gos the greatest group of female
- 1:45Speaker 1: musicians in pop music history? Now? I both love and
- 1:49Speaker 1: hate these big dumb questions. I love them because as
- 1:52Speaker 1: dumb as they are, they force us to have a
- 1:55Speaker 1: conversation about things. I dislike them immensely because they are
- 2:00Speaker 1: so basic and they are they are so limiting, and
- 2:04Speaker 1: they eliminate any nuance and that can be a drag.
- 2:08Speaker 1: But hey, we do the nuance thing in the full
- 2:10Speaker 1: episode for these after parties. Let let's get the conversation going.
- 2:14Speaker 1: To do that, we need to say the obvious thing here,
- 2:15Speaker 1: which is that there are plenty of women who have
- 2:18Speaker 1: had number one albums. Okay, Taylor Swift has fourteen number
- 2:21Speaker 1: one albums, for God's sake, but there's also Madonna, barbar
- 2:25Speaker 1: streisand there's others. Now, Taylor and Madonna relied on co
- 2:30Speaker 1: writers for the songs on their number one albums. Okay,
- 2:33Speaker 1: I'm not saying that Taylor Swift doesn't write her own songs.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Don't hear this the wrong way. She does write her
- 2:39Speaker 1: own songs, she just writes them with Jack Antonoff and
- 2:42Speaker 1: other people. Okay, other people have a hand in it.
- 2:44Speaker 1: That wasn't the case with the Go Gos. They wrote
- 2:46Speaker 1: their own songs as the band members of their band. Okay. Madonna,
- 2:51Speaker 1: same thing, first album. I don't think she wrote anything
- 2:54Speaker 1: on it. Then she got some success. She co wrote
- 2:57Speaker 1: with other musicians True Blue in particular, huge album for
- 3:01Speaker 1: her number one. I think they're all co writes on that.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Barbara Streisan, to my knowledge, didn't write any of the
- 3:10Speaker 1: songs on her number ones. I did a little bit
- 3:13Speaker 1: of research into this and Brittany Beyonce, Janet Jackson. It's
- 3:18Speaker 1: not like they were holed up in a dingy rehearsal
- 3:21Speaker 1: space writing their own tunes. Okay, they had writers and
- 3:23Speaker 1: or co writers crafting their hits as well. And again,
- 3:29Speaker 1: there are zero girl groups. Everyone I just talked about
- 3:32Speaker 1: was a solo artist. There are zero girl groups with
- 3:35Speaker 1: number one albums who wrote their own songs. Diana Ross
- 3:40Speaker 1: and the Supremes, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Dixie Chicks or
- 3:43Speaker 1: the Chicks. I'm sorry, Spice Girls, TLC, Dannity Kane, Black Pink.
- 3:48Speaker 1: None of you did what the go gos did to
- 3:51Speaker 1: achieve your number one albums, and that is write your
- 3:55Speaker 1: own tunes. All right. It's such a singular achievement that
- 3:59Speaker 1: I I can't even find a proper list from Rolling Stone,
- 4:02Speaker 1: the magazine of record. When it comes to stupid lists,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I can't even find a real list of greatest girl
- 4:08Speaker 1: groups of all time from freaking Rolling Stone. So Billboard
- 4:12Speaker 1: has a list, but it's paywalld and I'm not paying
- 4:14Speaker 1: for it. US Weekly has a list, but it isn't ranked,
- 4:18Speaker 1: which doesn't do us much good. So let's see what
- 4:22Speaker 1: the robots have to say. All right, Google's AI their
- 4:26Speaker 1: Gemini product. When prompted with the question who are the
- 4:30Speaker 1: greatest girl groups of all time? Gemini answers with the
- 4:34Speaker 1: following The Supremes, Spice Girls, Destiny's Child are widely considered
- 4:39Speaker 1: the greatest girl groups of all time. Now, when I
- 4:41Speaker 1: ask chat GPT the same thing, chat GPT gives me
- 4:46Speaker 1: the following answer and ranked list. So here's the answer again.
- 4:50Speaker 1: The question is who are the greatest girl groups of
- 4:53Speaker 1: all time? Chat GPT, the artificial intelligence says the best
- 4:56Speaker 1: girl groups of all time can vary depending on criteria
- 5:00Speaker 1: commercial success, cultural impact, critical acclaim, or fan based devotion.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Here's a comprehensive list that includes influential and successful girl
- 5:08Speaker 1: groups from various genres and eras. All right, so here's
- 5:12Speaker 1: the ranked list, in reverse order from chat GPT. Number ten, Brownstone,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I've never heard of them, number nine, the raw Nets,
- 5:20Speaker 1: all right, I get that, eight and Vogue, I get that.
- 5:22Speaker 1: The Supremes are at seven. Yep. Six is Little Mix,
- 5:26Speaker 1: a group I've never heard of. Five Girls Generation that's
- 5:30Speaker 1: kpop that I've never heard of. Black Pink is at
- 5:32Speaker 1: number four. I believe Black Pink is the woman from
- 5:36Speaker 1: White Lotus three, Destiny's Child two TLC and number one
- 5:43Speaker 1: Spice Girls. That is a tough list for a number
- 5:47Speaker 1: of reasons. I'm not even gonna get into it. I mean,
- 5:49Speaker 1: Raw Nets are way too low, That's all I'll say. Okay,
- 5:52Speaker 1: So the chat GBT robot included other lists as well,
- 5:58Speaker 1: unprompted because chatch GPT does write by me. Okay, I
- 6:02Speaker 1: guess let's see chatch GPT. The good little robot it
- 6:06Speaker 1: gave me are okay, critically acclaimed and culturally important Okay,
- 6:13Speaker 1: so that's this list. Here for the groups on that list,
- 6:17Speaker 1: oh sorry, for the groups I'm a critically inclaimed and
- 6:19Speaker 1: culturally important list are groups that I just that were
- 6:22Speaker 1: in the top ten, So I'm not going to get
- 6:23Speaker 1: into that. And then gives me a list of underrated
- 6:26Speaker 1: and cult favorites. And when I saw that as the
- 6:29Speaker 1: heading as the headline, I thought, Okay, here we go.
- 6:32Speaker 1: This is where the Go Gos are going to end up.
- 6:33Speaker 1: So here's the list. Number five on the list of
- 6:36Speaker 1: best underrated and cult favorite girl groups. Number five the Bengals,
- 6:41Speaker 1: number four, SWV, number three All Saints, number two Sugar Babes,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and number one Danity Kane. The Go Gos are nowhere
- 6:53Speaker 1: to be found on any of these lists, which makes
- 6:57Speaker 1: zero sense. Zero. The Go Gos were not the Runaways.
- 7:02Speaker 1: The Go Gos were not even the Frickin' Bangles. They
- 7:04Speaker 1: were so much more. It's beyond discouraging that AI two
- 7:08Speaker 1: different AI applications, mind you, It's beyond discouraging that AI
- 7:12Speaker 1: hasn't recognize this band. It's alarming. Actually, now you might
- 7:16Speaker 1: be shaking your head saying, well, it's just AI, and
- 7:17Speaker 1: who gets a shit about AI? And I would say, yeah, okay,
- 7:20Speaker 1: but artificial intelligence is a reflection of the actual intelligence
- 7:25Speaker 1: that is currently on the Internet, okay, Or I would
- 7:29Speaker 1: say the lack of intelligence that is currently on the Internet.
- 7:32Speaker 1: How the girl group that wrote their own songs and
- 7:36Speaker 1: had the first and the only number one record in
- 7:38Speaker 1: history of pop music that were not one hit wonders
- 7:43Speaker 1: who had follow up hits, a significant career, significant post
- 7:48Speaker 1: careers for its members, was just recently inducted into the
- 7:52Speaker 1: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is still performing
- 7:54Speaker 1: on relevant bills with other relevant artists. How they're not
- 7:58Speaker 1: number one on this list, never mind just completely excluded
- 8:02Speaker 1: from these lists is beyond me. It's like the Go
- 8:04Speaker 1: Gos have descended back into subterranean punk rock obscurity as
- 8:10Speaker 1: it concerns the mainstream the masses. This should not be
- 8:14Speaker 1: taken lightly. AI may not take my job as a
- 8:18Speaker 1: guy who writes about music, but it's going to be
- 8:20Speaker 1: the first veil of history. It's going to be the
- 8:23Speaker 1: source that most people in the future reference first when
- 8:28Speaker 1: they're looking for quick facts and quick views into the past.
- 8:32Speaker 1: And the fact that the Go Gos aren't even mentioned
- 8:35Speaker 1: is a freaking disgrace. Okay, I feel like Belinda Carlisle
- 8:41Speaker 1: pissed off some robots or something. I have no idea
- 8:43Speaker 1: what's going on here. It makes no sense. Maybe I'm
- 8:46Speaker 1: in the minority. Maybe the Go Gos weren't that good.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Maybe the Go Gos weren't that significant. Maybe because they
- 8:52Speaker 1: come from punk rock, I elevate them somewhat in my
- 8:54Speaker 1: mind for some reason, But I don't think so. I mean,
- 8:56Speaker 1: those songs were ubiquitous, they were everywhere. They were stow
- 9:00Speaker 1: cold hits, they're still being played. I just cannot get
- 9:04Speaker 1: with the fact that they're not recognized here. It doesn't
- 9:06Speaker 1: make any sense. And if you want a deeper look
- 9:09Speaker 1: into why I feel this way, obviously check out this
- 9:11Speaker 1: week's full episode. We just released it a couple days ago,
- 9:14Speaker 1: and we're gonna find out where you guys stand on
- 9:16Speaker 1: this and what you guys think and who you think
- 9:18Speaker 1: the greatest girl groups are of all time when we
- 9:19Speaker 1: get into your voicemails and your text and your dms
- 9:22Speaker 1: in a bit. But before that, I gotta tell you.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I got to tell you guys about the upcoming rewind
- 9:26Speaker 1: episode that's hitting your feeds after this one. That episode
- 9:29Speaker 1: is on Madonna and it's freaking awesome. And in it
- 9:32Speaker 1: I discuss some of the wilder moments in Madonna's career,
- 9:35Speaker 1: of course, but I also talk about one of my
- 9:38Speaker 1: favorite songs of all time, a Madonna song, but a
- 9:41Speaker 1: song Madonna did not write, a song called Borderline, and
- 9:45Speaker 1: it features one of the coolest music cues that we've
- 9:47Speaker 1: ever created in Disgrace. And so check that episode out.
- 9:49Speaker 1: It's coming your way next in your feed for some
- 9:51Speaker 1: throwback disgraceand vibes. And next week on Tuesday, per your request. Okay,
- 9:56Speaker 1: it's a brand new episode on Marilyn Manson and Oh
- 9:59Speaker 1: the inn humanity, What this guy did, what this guy
- 10:02Speaker 1: admitted to doing, the staggering level of rock star hubris
- 10:06Speaker 1: and depravity. This episode is going to give the Ggi
- 10:08Speaker 1: Allen episode from our archive a run for its money,
- 10:11Speaker 1: all right, And when you're listening to this episode, I
- 10:13Speaker 1: want you guys to be thinking about who the most
- 10:15Speaker 1: subversive artist of the nineteen nineties was. Was it Marilyn Manson,
- 10:20Speaker 1: was it gg Allen? Was it Madonna? Was it someone else?
- 10:24Speaker 1: Let me know, I'm gonna be talking a little bit
- 10:25Speaker 1: more about this in the bonus section of this after
- 10:28Speaker 1: Party Today. Six one seven, nine oh six sixty sixty
- 10:30Speaker 1: three eight. Leave me a voicemail, send me a text
- 10:33Speaker 1: on your thoughts on Marilyn Manson, the subversiveness of the
- 10:36Speaker 1: nineteen nineties. Marilyn Manson as an artist? Was he the
- 10:40Speaker 1: most subversive artist of the nineties? Six one seven, nine
- 10:43Speaker 1: oh six, six six three eight voicemail and text I
- 10:46Speaker 1: want to know? Hit me up. I'll respond in next
- 10:48Speaker 1: week's after Party episode. You may hear your own voicemail,
- 10:51Speaker 1: or you may hear me read your text right here
- 10:53Speaker 1: next week. I'll be back in a minute after the
- 10:55Speaker 1: short break with your answers to last week's questions, your voicemails,
- 10:58Speaker 1: your text, your emails. All right, we're back. Apple podcast listeners,
- 11:20Speaker 1: make sure you get those auto downloads turned on, all right,
- 11:24Speaker 1: Get them on, Get them on, get them on. Bang
- 11:25Speaker 1: a gong. Let's make sure you get all episodes of
- 11:28Speaker 1: Disgrace Sam six one seven, nine oh six sixty six
- 11:31Speaker 1: three eight. You know where I'm at. I'm in the
- 11:32Speaker 1: phone booth. It's the same one I'm in all every week.
- 11:35Speaker 1: It's the one across the hall, hanging on the telephone.
- 11:37Speaker 1: You guys, want to send me a voice mean I
- 11:38Speaker 1: want to send me a text. Get at me six
- 11:40Speaker 1: one seven, nine oh six sixty six three eight, just
- 11:43Speaker 1: like Tony from the two oh six.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Jake, what's happening? Brothers? Tony from the two O six.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I know it's been a minute. I talked to you,
- 11:50Speaker 2: uh to answer your question or who's the greatest girl
- 11:53Speaker 2: group there is? The Go Gos? I definitely say the
- 11:56Speaker 2: Go Gos, but I also say the Bengals. I always
- 11:58Speaker 2: thought the two of them would make for an interesting
- 12:00Speaker 2: versus battle if you remember the verses from the Lockdown era.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I always thought the two of them going head to
- 12:05Speaker 2: head over who had the better songs would be interesting.
- 12:09Speaker 2: So much love from the two six and I'll ha
- 12:11Speaker 2: let you later, peace.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Tony and the two h six. Thanks for the comment, man,
- 12:14Speaker 1: I get the Bengals love I do, I don't. I
- 12:17Speaker 1: just don't rank them as high as the Go Gos,
- 12:19Speaker 1: And for various reasons, I don't want to beat a
- 12:21Speaker 1: dead horse, but mainly it's it's just the hits. The
- 12:23Speaker 1: hits are stronger, and the Go Gos came first as well.
- 12:26Speaker 1: You gotta give him some credit for that. Johnny Vinyl
- 12:29Speaker 1: from the six one seven what's up? Brother, Let's hear
- 12:31Speaker 1: what Johnny's gotta say?
- 12:32Speaker 3: Andy, what's up?
- 12:33Speaker 4: Jacobs?
- 12:33Speaker 3: Johnny Vinyl answering the question of the week, who's the
- 12:37Speaker 3: best all girl band? So I have to say the
- 12:41Speaker 3: Runaways have a slight edge over the Go Gos, and
- 12:45Speaker 3: then the Go Gos set the stage for the Bengals,
- 12:47Speaker 3: so I would say it goes in that order.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Throwing there for honorable mention, Pixon absolutely for the nineties,
- 12:55Speaker 4: you have to pick L seven. And another honorable mention
- 12:59Speaker 4: is the band Veruka Salt, where two out of the
- 13:02Speaker 4: four members were the lead singers, guitarists and wrote all
- 13:06Speaker 4: songs and they were amazing in the nineties.
- 13:09Speaker 3: So that's your lineup right there. You know, I can't
- 13:12Speaker 3: stick to just one, but great episode of The Go
- 13:15Speaker 3: Gos had me laughing with the whole situation of Ozzie
- 13:18Speaker 3: kicking forget what her name is, but kicking her out
- 13:22Speaker 3: of the hotel room. You have to be pretty fucked
- 13:23Speaker 3: up to have Ausie kick you out anyway, brother, have
- 13:27Speaker 3: a good one.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Johnny, appreciate the voicemail as always, great list, and you're
- 13:33Speaker 1: kind of throwing what I just said back in my face.
- 13:34Speaker 1: You're putting the Runaways at number one because it came
- 13:36Speaker 1: before the Go Gos, And yeah, I get how you
- 13:40Speaker 1: can do that. They did not have the hits that
- 13:43Speaker 1: the Go Gos had, obviously, and they neither did they
- 13:45Speaker 1: write their own songs. I don't believe. I think it
- 13:47Speaker 1: was all Kim Fowley, right, but I get it, and
- 13:50Speaker 1: I love how you mentioned L seven. No one's brought
- 13:53Speaker 1: them up yet to me. Actually, someone on on Instagram did,
- 13:56Speaker 1: but I love that. We got it in voicemail form
- 13:58Speaker 1: here and Veruka Salt as well. Huge, great call. Appreciate you,
- 14:02Speaker 1: my man. Six one seven nine oh six six six
- 14:04Speaker 1: three eight. You guys want to send me a voicemail.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Next week's question of the Week is going to be
- 14:08Speaker 1: on the nineties artists who were the most subversive? Is
- 14:12Speaker 1: it Marilyn Manson? Is it somebody else? It was it
- 14:14Speaker 1: gg Allen Gigi and died in nineteen ninety three, so
- 14:18Speaker 1: I don't know that we can say that. But the
- 14:20Speaker 1: six one seven here right saying hey gg Allen episode,
- 14:23Speaker 1: you mentioned the pit in Harvard Square. It's gone now,
- 14:26Speaker 1: which pisses me off, but it hadn't been the same
- 14:28Speaker 1: since the early two thousands. However, it was a special
- 14:31Speaker 1: place for me from about nineteen eighty seven to nineteen
- 14:33Speaker 1: ninety two, you and me both. I didn't have any
- 14:36Speaker 1: friends in the pit because I wasn't from Boston, but
- 14:37Speaker 1: I was hanging out there on weekends. My dad lived
- 14:39Speaker 1: in the city. I was from the Burbs from my mom,
- 14:41Speaker 1: and I would come in. I'd go to Neo Reecomics,
- 14:43Speaker 1: I get some pizza in the mall there. I forget
- 14:46Speaker 1: the name of that place. Still smell that pizza though,
- 14:49Speaker 1: And yeah, I'd go hang out in the pit, and
- 14:52Speaker 1: you know, i'd hope to not get beat up by
- 14:53Speaker 1: the skinheads. And I just sort of gaze upon the
- 14:56Speaker 1: punk rockers and think, you know, what the hell are
- 14:58Speaker 1: these fucking gutter punk kids all about? As well? It's
- 15:01Speaker 1: a whole thing, man. And six one seven we probably
- 15:04Speaker 1: crossed paths eight two eight texts in Hey, just finishing
- 15:07Speaker 1: up the Sign of the Times bonus episode, and thought
- 15:10Speaker 1: i'd throw you some PNC Park pics. I gotta love
- 15:13Speaker 1: Pittsburgh sports fans. I got I gotta cut this this
- 15:15Speaker 1: text or off for a minute here. You know, I
- 15:18Speaker 1: mentioned a Pittsburgh Pirates hat once. Maybe twice, and the
- 15:22Speaker 1: Pittsburgh fans come out of the woodwork. It's I can't
- 15:28Speaker 1: tell you how many how many texts I've got and
- 15:31Speaker 1: voicemails from and Instagram messages, just Pittsburgh sports fans, maybe
- 15:36Speaker 1: Pirates fans just looking to talk. You know what it
- 15:38Speaker 1: reminds me of. It reminds me of my dog Dusty, who, like,
- 15:40Speaker 1: you know, someone says the word walk and she comes out,
- 15:42Speaker 1: she goes. Someone say walk, someone say walk. You know,
- 15:44Speaker 1: it's like you mentioned the Pirates. It's like pirates. You
- 15:47Speaker 1: guess what I'm talking about, the Pirates. That's that's the
- 15:49Speaker 1: Pittsburgh fans. I love it. And this one sends in
- 15:52Speaker 1: these I'll read the rest of the text. Uh. These
- 15:55Speaker 1: pictures are probably mostly from Yankees' visits. Since I'm a
- 15:58Speaker 1: transplanted Connecticut native Lee, I appreciate the text. And you
- 16:03Speaker 1: have a beautiful ballpark there in Pittsburgh, gorgeous. Someday I
- 16:07Speaker 1: hope to visit. Thank you three oh three rights in Hey.
- 16:10Speaker 1: If you need research help with hairbands, that's my jam.
- 16:13Speaker 1: I read Circus and Hip Parader magazines cover to cover
- 16:17Speaker 1: every month for almost a decade, starting in the eighties,
- 16:20Speaker 1: listen three oh three. Appreciate you. I might take you
- 16:22Speaker 1: up on your offer at some point. I just found
- 16:24Speaker 1: out that the singer for Warrant died? Is that true?
- 16:26Speaker 1: Is that true? And if you guys could have one
- 16:30Speaker 1: episode on one hairband, who would it be? Let's let's
- 16:34Speaker 1: let's make a quick, little, quick little run down here. Poison.
- 16:38Speaker 1: I'm thinking these are all bands I despise, by the way. Okay, now,
- 16:41Speaker 1: no shade. If you like them, I get it, you know,
- 16:43Speaker 1: I guess the older I get a Poison song comes on.
- 16:46Speaker 1: I have some nostalgia for it. But let's just go.
- 16:48Speaker 1: I'm excluding Motley Crue. Let's just go five hairbands. You
- 16:52Speaker 1: can get one episode on them, Poison, skid Row, Warrant, Winger,
- 17:01Speaker 1: and then I don't know dealer's choice for number five.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I don't know if it's Faster, Pussycat, Cinderella, who we
- 17:09Speaker 1: talking about. I can do one. Now, don't just be
- 17:12Speaker 1: selfish and be like I like that band, therefore it's
- 17:14Speaker 1: number one. Come at me voicemail six point seven nine
- 17:18Speaker 1: six six sixty three eight text, Come at me with
- 17:22Speaker 1: what you think will make the best hair metal episode. Okay,
- 17:26Speaker 1: which now now to your point three H three. I
- 17:29Speaker 1: was not. I was reading Hipparator in Circus, but I
- 17:32Speaker 1: was skipping those articles. And I definitely wasn't putting Jennie
- 17:36Speaker 1: Lane up on my wall. No shade if you were.
- 17:38Speaker 1: But you know, some of you know way better than
- 17:42Speaker 1: I the history of these bands, these hair metal bands.
- 17:45Speaker 1: So I want the one. I want the I want
- 17:47Speaker 1: the ones with the most criminality in their background. Is
- 17:49Speaker 1: it skid row? Is it is it? I don't think
- 17:53Speaker 1: it is. Is it poison? I don't think it is. Again,
- 17:56Speaker 1: Motley Crue does not count. We have a new episode
- 17:59Speaker 1: of Nikki six come your way, and we of course
- 18:02Speaker 1: have an episode on Motley Crue, so we're gonna have two.
- 18:04Speaker 1: So there you go. But get at me, hair metal fans.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Let me know three Oho two rites in as a
- 18:09Speaker 1: teenager in the eighties and the nineties. He grew up
- 18:11Speaker 1: with a mom that was hyper concerned about what neighbors thought.
- 18:14Speaker 1: This banger was so important to me, and that banger
- 18:18Speaker 1: is salt and Peppa's none of your business. And this
- 18:21Speaker 1: is on the heels of the Sign of the Times
- 18:23Speaker 1: episode that we did on Prince Who. We were talking
- 18:24Speaker 1: about which artists best represented their generation, and the three
- 18:27Speaker 1: oh two wrote in a head of that text, I'm
- 18:30Speaker 1: so mad at myself for not mentioning TLC and Salt
- 18:33Speaker 1: and Peppa in the Sign of the Times conversation. Both
- 18:35Speaker 1: bands were huge and making a statement about feminism and
- 18:38Speaker 1: safe sex during the AIDS epidemic. And you're absolutely right
- 18:41Speaker 1: they were, and they were females. So it's apropos of
- 18:44Speaker 1: our conversation right now this week, as well as our
- 18:47Speaker 1: conversation last week. Thank you three oh two for tying
- 18:49Speaker 1: it all together. You guys are the best listeners. Appreciate you.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six sixty three eight
- 18:56Speaker 1: voicemail and text you want to get at me at
- 18:58Speaker 1: disgrace lampod on the social you want to hit me there,
- 19:01Speaker 1: Paul over in the UK on Facebook rights. Hey, it's
- 19:04Speaker 1: Paul from the plus four fours. That's the UK. In
- 19:07Speaker 1: case that's lost in translation, working my way back through
- 19:10Speaker 1: your amazing back catalog and am still stuck in the
- 19:13Speaker 1: past somewhere in twenty twenty three when you're asking for recommendations.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Don't worry, Paul. We were asking for recommendations last week
- 19:18Speaker 1: as well. We do it from time to time. Recommendtions
- 19:21Speaker 1: on stories to cover, and I thought to cast an
- 19:23Speaker 1: eye to the future and see if you've covered Wales
- 19:27Speaker 1: his very own Manic Street Preachers, and was surprised to
- 19:30Speaker 1: see that you hadn't definitely something there regarding Richie's disappearance.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Surely no worries. If not, I'll still continue to enjoy
- 19:37Speaker 1: what you do. Offer many thanks my good sir, Cheerio
- 19:40Speaker 1: and Tootlepip Paul. He really did write Cheerio and Tootlepip Paul.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Richie Edwards disappearance singer of Manick Street Preachers. I looked
- 19:53Speaker 1: into this pretty significantly a bunch of years ago. It
- 19:57Speaker 1: was the subject that Payne Lindsay and I were going
- 20:00Speaker 1: to cover before we get into the Dead and Gone podcast,
- 20:04Speaker 1: and we just could not come up with enough information.
- 20:09Speaker 1: There's really not a lot of information out there, so
- 20:11Speaker 1: it's a tough subject to cover, but that doesn't stop
- 20:14Speaker 1: me in the past. I think we could do one
- 20:16Speaker 1: episode for sure, and Paul, we will probably get into
- 20:19Speaker 1: that sometime in the near future. Okay, so by the
- 20:22Speaker 1: time you catch up, hopefully that'll be sitting in your
- 20:25Speaker 1: RSS feed. Thanks Paul at Disgrace Sandpod on Facebook, x
- 20:28Speaker 1: and on Twitter. You guys want to get at me
- 20:30Speaker 1: about any subject, that's where you can do it. It
- 20:32Speaker 1: can be anything music related, it can be anything podcast related.
- 20:35Speaker 1: It can be anything related to the books that we
- 20:37Speaker 1: discuss here. It can be anything related to the sports
- 20:39Speaker 1: that we sometimes very seldomly discussed in these little thirty
- 20:43Speaker 1: second sports rants that I've been doing. And I have
- 20:44Speaker 1: to just say here to all my Pirates fans out there,
- 20:46Speaker 1: I feel you. I feel like we're becoming one of you.
- 20:49Speaker 1: As Boston fans. We are melding. I say that because
- 20:52Speaker 1: the Red Sox it's not even June and the Red
- 20:55Speaker 1: Sox are dead. We need to lay the Red Sox out,
- 20:58Speaker 1: Lay them out down to McNally's funeral home, head over
- 21:01Speaker 1: to the old timers for a shot of jamison, a
- 21:03Speaker 1: pine of guinness. Because the Red Sox are dead as
- 21:06Speaker 1: a door nail. They're what two three games under five
- 21:10Speaker 1: hundred at this point, seven ish games out of first
- 21:13Speaker 1: in a not so great division. It's time for me,
- 21:16Speaker 1: I think, to put my Mets hat on and hope
- 21:18Speaker 1: for a Subway series in October and come at the
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yankees that way. This is embarrassing. They shouldn't be this
- 21:25Speaker 1: bad of the Red Sox. They should not be this bad.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I don't care the Bregman's hurt. I don't care. The
- 21:31Speaker 1: cast is hurt. They have the horses, they're not playing them,
- 21:34Speaker 1: and the ones they are playing are sucking there. I
- 21:37Speaker 1: don't know what's up. It's just management, coaching, playing, it's everything.
- 21:41Speaker 1: It's fucking awful. Okay. I can't stand it. I can't
- 21:44Speaker 1: stand that we have a payroll as high as we
- 21:47Speaker 1: have and we are not in contention. I can't stand
- 21:50Speaker 1: that we have an iconic team, an iconic ballpark, the
- 21:54Speaker 1: best fans in sports, and we are out of contention.
- 21:57Speaker 1: It's not acceptable. Can a flash with your emails in
- 22:01Speaker 1: the Hollywood Lamb Minute? All right, we are back and
- 22:18Speaker 1: you know what time it is. It's time for the
- 22:19Speaker 1: Hollywood lad Minute, brought to you by the Hollywood Lamp Podcast.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Don't know what the Hollywood Lamp podcast is? Well, the
- 22:23Speaker 1: Hollywood Lamp Podcast is hosted by Yours Truly, where every
- 22:25Speaker 1: week I tell you a story from the nnex of
- 22:26Speaker 1: Hollywood and true crime. And right now there are over
- 22:28Speaker 1: forty episodes waiting for you to binge. Episodes on James Dean,
- 22:31Speaker 1: Danny Trehoe, Charlie Sheen, David Lynch, John Waters, Maril Monroe,
- 22:34Speaker 1: Drew Barrymore, Steve McQueen, and most recently on Dwayne the
- 22:40Speaker 1: Rock Johnson. Here's a clip. Dwayne Johnson had wrestling in
- 22:45Speaker 1: his blood. His father, Rocky Johnson, was the first black
- 22:49Speaker 1: wrestler to win the Georgia Heavyweight Championship. Now he was
- 22:53Speaker 1: working some West Coast gigs as a tag team partner
- 22:55Speaker 1: of simone wrestler Peter Myvea. Rocky Johnson had trained as
- 22:59Speaker 1: a ball sparring with guys like George Foreman and Muhammad Ali,
- 23:03Speaker 1: but he gained some popularity in wrestling working the regional
- 23:06Speaker 1: circuits in the late nineteen sixties. When Rocky got the
- 23:10Speaker 1: town jet lagged from the flight from Japan, Peter Mavilla
- 23:13Speaker 1: invited him to crash at his house and they were friendly,
- 23:16Speaker 1: but they weren't friends. Wrestling was a business. You didn't
- 23:20Speaker 1: let things get personal. The illusion that it was all
- 23:23Speaker 1: real was part of it, and so was the way
- 23:26Speaker 1: a group of wrestlers would burn storm a region for
- 23:28Speaker 1: a few weeks before moving on. But wrestler couldn't be
- 23:31Speaker 1: seen at the diner with the guy who was going
- 23:33Speaker 1: to knock the shit out of that night. The good
- 23:36Speaker 1: guy aka the Face didn't palad around with the bad
- 23:39Speaker 1: guy aka the Heel. For Peter my Villa, it was
- 23:43Speaker 1: more than that. Guys in the business had problems drinking, drugs, violence.
- 23:49Speaker 1: He was no saint himself. Normal folks didn't get into wrestling,
- 23:53Speaker 1: so there weren't many wrestlers that were normal. Therefore, there
- 23:55Speaker 1: weren't many wrestlers if Peter my Villa wanted to hang
- 23:57Speaker 1: around with, and there certainly weren't many he wanted hanging
- 24:01Speaker 1: around his daughter, So when Rocky Johnson started flirting with
- 24:04Speaker 1: Peter my VA's daughter, Peter did his best to shut
- 24:07Speaker 1: it down. Unfortunately, this match was scripted. They fell in
- 24:12Speaker 1: love and ran off to get married without my VIA's blessing.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Two years later, in time to meet his grandson, Little Dwayne,
- 24:21Speaker 1: Peter my Villa admitted defeat his daughter had married Russell.
- 24:27Speaker 1: All right, guys, make sure you are subscribed to the
- 24:29Speaker 1: Hollywood Land podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you
- 24:33Speaker 1: get your podcast. Next week, we've got an episode on
- 24:36Speaker 1: Fatty Airbuckle, one of the biggest scandals and trials in
- 24:39Speaker 1: Hollywood History, the Crime of the Century, before OJ Simpson,
- 24:44Speaker 1: before Sean ditty Combs, Sean Didty Combs. While you're handing
- 24:47Speaker 1: out XC shaped like Barack Obama, what's up with that disgrace?
- 24:51Speaker 1: Lampod at gmail dot com. You want to get at
- 24:53Speaker 1: me in the email format. I unleashed a dragon last
- 24:57Speaker 1: week when I brought up Fish. The Fish fans are
- 25:00Speaker 1: the Fish fans are plentiful, and the Fish fans are
- 25:04Speaker 1: full throated. Now there will be a Fish episode, and
- 25:08Speaker 1: I will bring love and intention to the creation of
- 25:10Speaker 1: that episode, and it will come within this calendar year.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Fish fans, I have heard you speak, I have heard
- 25:17Speaker 1: you roar. This email comes from Lacey McNairy and I'm
- 25:20Speaker 1: reading it because it is this apropos of what we're
- 25:23Speaker 1: doing right now. Subject Fish message. Hey Jake, it's Lacey
- 25:28Speaker 1: from the five h two. Just turned your bonus episode
- 25:30Speaker 1: where you talked about Fish and how you love the who.
- 25:34Speaker 1: You may be interested to know that Fish covered the
- 25:36Speaker 1: whole Quadraphenia album at their Halloween show in Chicago back
- 25:39Speaker 1: in the day. I was there and I had a blast.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Here's a link. Lacey, appreciate the email. I did not
- 25:45Speaker 1: know that, and I believe I said that. You know,
- 25:48Speaker 1: I love the Who now, it was a long road
- 25:50Speaker 1: getting to love the Who. I didn't grow up loving
- 25:53Speaker 1: the Who, like I didn't grow up loving the Fish.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And I liked that the fish. I'm gonna call them
- 25:57Speaker 1: the fish from now. I want to hope it on mind.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I like that the fish quadraphenia. I think that's an
- 26:02Speaker 1: incredible achievement, and I'd actually be interested in seeing what
- 26:05Speaker 1: that looks like. So perhaps I'll watch it, appreciate it,
- 26:09Speaker 1: and maybe maybe that'll end end up in the episode
- 26:12Speaker 1: the episode Fish. Excuse me, on the Fish that we
- 26:16Speaker 1: are going to produce. It's way more criminal than I
- 26:21Speaker 1: could have hoped for. I'm pretty stoked about it. And
- 26:24Speaker 1: I say all this because we just and I read
- 26:26Speaker 1: this email in particular because just yesterday I recorded a
- 26:31Speaker 1: new episode on The Who on the Riverfront called Seam
- 26:34Speaker 1: Tragedy from the early eighties, where eleven people died at
- 26:37Speaker 1: a WHO concert, And it's a pretty harrowing story and
- 26:41Speaker 1: I can't wait for you guys to hear it. And
- 26:43Speaker 1: it's coming up in a couple of weeks, so you
- 26:45Speaker 1: have that to look forward to. In addition, to the Fish,
- 26:49Speaker 1: the Fish, the Fish episode, they say that, right. Okay, reviews,
- 26:53Speaker 1: I often get asked, Hey, how can I support the show?
- 26:56Speaker 1: You know I'm beating the dead horse when I tell you,
- 26:58Speaker 1: because you already know. Leave a review and I have
- 26:59Speaker 1: a podcast. Leave a review on Spotify. Let the world
- 27:02Speaker 1: know how much you love Disgraceland and that'll help the
- 27:04Speaker 1: algorithm feed Disgraceland to other potential listeners. And every week
- 27:10Speaker 1: I go on these apps and I pull up your
- 27:12Speaker 1: reviews and I read them here. And if you hear yours,
- 27:15Speaker 1: red hit me and I will respond in time, and
- 27:18Speaker 1: I will get in touch and I'll get you some
- 27:20Speaker 1: free merch. Okay, only for the reviews that I read here.
- 27:23Speaker 1: I read two a week, one on Apple, one on Spotify.
- 27:25Speaker 1: This one from Seed Jev on Apple podcast five stars,
- 27:28Speaker 1: title Jake Never Misses. I've been listening since twenty twenty
- 27:31Speaker 1: and I enjoy every episode, even once which I do
- 27:33Speaker 1: not care for the artists. Just finish the David Crosby episode.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I never cared for his music until after he passed away.
- 27:39Speaker 1: I took a deep dive into his catalog and I
- 27:41Speaker 1: really enjoyed it. And man, truly was an outlaw musician
- 27:43Speaker 1: who made great music. My only complaint about the show
- 27:46Speaker 1: is that I usually listened during my long work commute,
- 27:49Speaker 1: and I often think that the sirens and the screeching
- 27:51Speaker 1: tires and the episodes are real, just kidding. Keep up
- 27:54Speaker 1: the good work now, thank you so much. See Jove,
- 27:57Speaker 1: y'all might be going to yourself and yourself right out.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Yet what David Crosby episode? What are we talking about?
- 28:03Speaker 1: There's no David Crosby episode of Disgracing. You're looking at
- 28:05Speaker 1: your Apple podcast feed right now, your Spotify feed, your
- 28:08Speaker 1: whatever feed. You don't see David Crosby in there. And
- 28:11Speaker 1: the reason you don't is because a David Crosby episode
- 28:14Speaker 1: is only available to our exclusive all access members of Disgraceland,
- 28:20Speaker 1: where every month they get a extra episode. Okay, see
- 28:24Speaker 1: Jove is talking about that extra episode on David Crosby
- 28:28Speaker 1: from Crosby, Stills, Nash and whoever the fuck as a
- 28:31Speaker 1: wise man once called them. And the reason that we
- 28:36Speaker 1: covered David Crosby is because his story is insane. It's nuts.
- 28:44Speaker 1: This guy was off the fucking rails in the worst way. Anyhow,
- 28:51Speaker 1: you want to hear that episode, you gott become a member.
- 28:52Speaker 1: It's only five bucks a month that you can do
- 28:54Speaker 1: so at Disgrace lampod dot com slash membership. Get that
- 28:58Speaker 1: CROs action like Melissa Ethridge. All right, but for much cheaper. Okay,
- 29:03Speaker 1: this episode is coming to an end, but not for
- 29:06Speaker 1: All Access members. The All Access members I just mentioned.
- 29:09Speaker 1: They also get a little bit more of the bonus
- 29:12Speaker 1: episodes too, and they get ad free listening. Go to
- 29:15Speaker 1: Disgrace sapod dot com slash membership to become a member
- 29:18Speaker 1: for just five dollars. All right, we are back. Everybody
- 29:44Speaker 1: gonna get out of here in a minute. I want
- 29:45Speaker 1: to talk about some episodes that we mentioned here, some subjects,
- 29:47Speaker 1: some artists that we mentioned here that we have episodes
- 29:49Speaker 1: in the vault in the archive. That's Taylor Swift. We
- 29:52Speaker 1: brought up Taylor Swift and we have a two part
- 29:54Speaker 1: episode on Britney Spears. We talked about a little bit here.
- 29:57Speaker 1: We did not we don't have an episode on this Supremes.
- 30:00Speaker 1: We do have a Motown episode, and of course you
- 30:03Speaker 1: can't talk about Motown without talking about the Supremes. TLC
- 30:06Speaker 1: came up TLC. We've got a TLC episode in the archive.
- 30:09Speaker 1: And Shania Twain. Did I talk about Shania Twain? I
- 30:13Speaker 1: don't know that I talked about Shania Twain, but we
- 30:15Speaker 1: do have an ECDC episode. Now, how is Shania Twain
- 30:18Speaker 1: related to ACDC. Well, Mutt Lang was married to Shania Twain,
- 30:21Speaker 1: and Mutt Lang produced those massive Shania Twain records. He
- 30:26Speaker 1: also produced Back in Black, amongst other massive death lepperd
- 30:31Speaker 1: just huge. So anyway, is ACDC episode. Check that out,
- 30:33Speaker 1: def Leppard. We'll get to at some point, but not
- 30:36Speaker 1: before we get out of here. Unfortunately, got a recap
- 30:39Speaker 1: right now. Number one, my other podcast, hollywood Land, is
- 30:42Speaker 1: alive and kicking over in the hollywood Land Feed, So
- 30:44Speaker 1: make sure you're subscribed and following hollywood Land on Apple Podcasts,
- 30:47Speaker 1: Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts, and check out
- 30:50Speaker 1: our recent episode on Dwayne the Rock Johnson. Number two
- 30:53Speaker 1: right now, your Disgrace Sland feed has a brand new
- 30:56Speaker 1: Go Gos episode. You know all about that because we
- 30:58Speaker 1: spent the first half of this episode talking about it.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Number three coming tomorrow, our rewind episode on Madonna, and
- 31:03Speaker 1: next Tuesday, our brand new episode on Marilyn Manson. Number
- 31:07Speaker 1: four merch Winners get in touch you know who you are,
- 31:10Speaker 1: Number five. Remember though, that no one cares about preserving
- 31:13Speaker 1: the true spirit of rock and roll more than you do.
- 31:15Speaker 1: And well that's a disgrace, all right, and honor this
- 31:17Speaker 1: week's subject, The Go Gos. This is me reading you
- 31:20Speaker 1: the Billboard charts of number one songs from the day
- 31:24Speaker 1: that The Go Go's debut album went to number one
- 31:27Speaker 1: on March sixth, nineteen eighty two. Number one Centerfold, The
- 31:33Speaker 1: Jay Giles Band last week one, peak position one weeks

- 32:25Speaker 3: Quit talking and start mixing ware doing
