- 0:34Hi guys, welcome to drive thru episode number 38.
- 0:37This is our monthly recap where we put together a menu of automotive,
- 0:40motorsport, and random car adjacent news.
- 0:43So now let's pull up to the window number one for some automotive news.
- 0:47William, you are doing a great job with this Halloween costume looking like Brad.
- 0:52Look at you.
- 0:54Doing my best.
- 0:55Doing my best.
- 0:55Well, I gotta thank you right up front for filling in Brad's size
- 0:5914 loafers for him this month as he's away on paternity leave.
- 1:03So many of you might recognize William Ross from Exotic Car Marketplace, one
- 1:08of our veteran panelists on our What Should I Buy series here on break fixing.
- 1:13He's been on several other episodes as a co host.
- 1:15So I'm glad you've elevated your status and now you've come on to the drive thru.
- 1:19So I hope you're prepared.
- 1:20Yeah.
- 1:20I'm working my way up the ladder, so to speak, right?
- 1:24In honor of William Big Money Ross, we're going to talk Ferraris
- 1:29as our showcase this month.
- 1:30And I know that's your specialty and I hate to paint you in the corner here.
- 1:34But what's going on in the world of Ferrari?
- 1:36Well, the big thing that's everyone's all the scuttlebutt is this 250
- 1:39GTO that Sotheby's is going to be auctioning off in December.
- 1:44Obviously everyone knows these are rare bird as it is anyways.
- 1:47And one coming up for auction, you know, is even rarer because usually they
- 1:50always trade hands privately off market.
- 1:53Then the last one was the 2018 that went for 48 million.
- 1:57Everyone's kind of curious to see because this car's got a bit more of
- 1:59a pedigree than that other one did.
- 2:01People are paying around 60 million, 80 million, someone oh 100
- 2:04million, which ain't gonna happen.
- 2:06So it's gonna be interesting to see where that thing ends up at because
- 2:08like I said it was a factory race car.
- 2:10It was actually upgraded to 330 LMs.
- 2:13Back, back in period, but then after that, it went back to the two 50 GTO specs,
- 2:17so to speak, you know, obviously with engine size and whatnot, differentiating
- 2:21between those two aesthetic wise with the hood bulge and everything like that.
- 2:24So the key thing is that was owned and raced by the factory.
- 2:27So that's going to add some value to it.
- 2:29Going to closely watch that.
- 2:31Cause not only is that dictating where the market will be after those, but
- 2:36there's always something out there looking for one, but right now, anyone
- 2:38that's got one, they thought about selling their wait until after that thing
- 2:40sells because they're going to think.
- 2:42Oh, that one's sold for this.
- 2:43So that means mine's worth that, which as we all know, that is not the
- 2:46case because each one of those has a different story, different histories.
- 2:49We shall see.
- 2:50So it's going to be great to watch, but my guess is the server will crash and
- 2:54no one's going to be able to watch it.
- 2:56So will this be a record setting car or.
- 3:00Is it getting close to the record for this type of classic Ferrari?
- 3:03It'll be a record for auction.
- 3:04It won't be a record price because as we all know, Mr.
- 3:07McNeil there from WeatherTech paid his 80 million for his car back
- 3:102016, 2015, something like that.
- 3:13That car's pedigree was off the chart.
- 3:14Le Mans, the whole nine yards.
- 3:15That thing had it where it was worth it, but that thing was spectacular.
- 3:18And he paid up for it.
- 3:19That's what he wanted.
- 3:20Private hand changing that 80 million mark is there, but that was leaked.
- 3:25That was let out.
- 3:26Who knows?
- 3:26Maybe one sold for more.
- 3:27No one just said anything.
- 3:28That's that billionaires boy club mentality.
- 3:31As far as anyone knows, 80 million is the max so far as paid for
- 3:34a GTO public knowledge wise.
- 3:37So what's really interesting.
- 3:38About this is a lot more Ferraris are coming to auction, whether it's at Broad
- 3:43Arrow, whether it's at Mecum, whether it's at Sotheby's, you're just really starting
- 3:46to see them almost everywhere now.
- 3:48And as we've talked to auction houses throughout this year on
- 3:52break fix, people are like, yeah, we're listing a lot more of them.
- 3:55More of them are coming on market.
- 3:56And what I noticed is ever since car week.
- 3:59F fifties have been climbing up into the auction scene more often than
- 4:04not, you know, they're pretty rare to begin with, but you hear about
- 4:06the F forties that are selling an auction and what they're bringing in.
- 4:09So what's going on with the F fifties?
- 4:11I would say, you know, I mean, that's basically the last analog
- 4:14six speed manual V12 Ferrari.
- 4:17The Enzo that came after that was a very big technological leap in
- 4:22regards to the vehicle itself.
- 4:24You know, it's that edge, you know, what you have on your wall as a kid.
- 4:27Purchasers, that age range creeping into, now that's the car they have.
- 4:31Wasn't the F40, it's the F50 that they all kind of lusted after.
- 4:34Especially being on the total build on those was 349, whereas
- 4:39your F40s, there was over 1300.
- 4:41If you go to buy an original U.
- 4:43S.
- 4:44market car, but you're gonna be paying probably 5 million, plain and simple.
- 4:46European one, you might be down to, you know, 4 million in that range.
- 4:49The demand's there and it was, it's a rare bird.
- 4:51Gorgeous car.
- 4:52It's, it's not crazy hard to drive.
- 4:55You know, it's pretty easy.
- 4:56I would say easy.
- 4:57It's not anything nuts to try and drive on the street, drive on the road.
- 5:00You know, it's a lot of fun.
- 5:02Just going to keep going up in value.
- 5:03So it's one of those deals where, Hey, they didn't make that many
- 5:06and a lot of people want it.
- 5:08So supply and demand.
- 5:09And this one that we're talking about here is also at Sotheby's
- 5:12and there's a high probability it's going to be eclipsed by the two 50
- 5:15that we were just talking about.
- 5:16But in terms of rarity, Out of the 349 that were built, this one is one of 30 in
- 5:23yellow, making it even more special, if you will, if you like the mustard over the
- 5:28ketchup shade of paint for the fifties.
- 5:31That's that unique barrette yellow.
- 5:32You wasn't all that hot of a color.
- 5:34He had the person that wants something different besides red.
- 5:37Few high profile collectors out there.
- 5:39I won't name one, but he deals a lot in watches and jewelry
- 5:42out there in the west coast.
- 5:43You can probably figure out what I'm talking about.
- 5:44Created his yellow collection.
- 5:45All of a sudden he did that.
- 5:46Everyone else wanted to have a yellow collection.
- 5:49They started going through the roof too, in regards to desirability, because
- 5:53you know, everyone's just plays follow the leader, but I think it looks great
- 5:56in yellow, would I pay a premium?
- 5:58Eh, not really.
- 5:58I mean, you can always get a car painted, get it wrapped in that color.
- 6:02You know, it's all personal preference.
- 6:03Well, since we're still talking about older classic and vintage Ferraris, you
- 6:08actually recently started a new segment on exotic car marketplace called provenance.
- 6:13And so I wanted to give you an opportunity to tell people what
- 6:16that series is about and what you're trying to convey about Ferraris.
- 6:20Depending on what your level of knowledge is on the older Enzo era Ferraris.
- 6:24If you go back and look, they were making thousands and thousands.
- 6:28They made 50 of this, 80 of that, a hundred of this.
- 6:31They had a lot of different models, but not only the models, but they
- 6:34also had different manufacturers doing the bodies for them.
- 6:38Pininfarina, Bowano.
- 6:40So you had all these little nuances to each car that made them just that much
- 6:43different depending on who built it.
- 6:44All of a sudden you have the main car, then you got a subset and
- 6:47a subset going through these.
- 6:48Trying to educate everyone in regards to, Hey, you have a two 50 GTE got
- 6:53the coupe, but Hey, they made so many variations of that car, body style,
- 6:57engine style, everything like that.
- 6:59There's all these variations to it and all these little nuances.
- 7:02You really got to do a deep dive.
- 7:04If you really want to get into it.
- 7:05But it's just trying to make people aware that, Hey, you know, they didn't just
- 7:09make that one, Hey, it was a two 50 GT.
- 7:11That's it.
- 7:11And there was subset ones, five, six different sub models and
- 7:15manufacturers of the body and just little things here and there.
- 7:18Then you got your special versions of it that, Hey, people with deep pockets
- 7:22had built that they, they liked that.
- 7:23So they built a couple more.
- 7:25So it's just trying to get people to realize that that's a beautiful thing
- 7:28about Ferrari is it was artesian.
- 7:30He built those cars.
- 7:32To support his racing.
- 7:33He wasn't like saying, Oh, I got to mass produce this thing
- 7:35and make 10, 000 of these.
- 7:36So we got to make it so production and everything like that's, Hey, we're down
- 7:40to the final penny, all this stuff.
- 7:41No.
- 7:42Yeah, they made their money on it, but they were doing it
- 7:44more for just the beauty of the car and getting it out there.
- 7:48And to this day, it's the same mindset.
- 7:50He chose who he wanted to buy his cars.
- 7:52It wasn't just, you went down and, Hey, I'll buy it.
- 7:54It's like, Hey, did you meet the qualifications?
- 7:56Especially in the earlier days, you know, he was basically on the phone calling.
- 8:00Hey, I'm going to let you buy a car from me.
- 8:04It wasn't someone come to you.
- 8:05Hey, I want to buy a car.
- 8:06You know, he's all the way around.
- 8:07I'll let you buy a car for me.
- 8:09Imagine having that kind of power, owning a car company,
- 8:11saying I'll pick and choose.
- 8:13You got some of them do it.
- 8:14I'll let you have Koenigsegg, Pagani, those guys, you know, they can pretty
- 8:17much kind of pick and choose who they want to have own their cars.
- 8:20They hold on to them for two months and they resell them.
- 8:22And then it's just like, no holds barred, but you do a deep dive on it.
- 8:26I'm reading a book now.
- 8:27It should have grass.
- 8:28We show it to that really kind of goes through all the cars from the
- 8:31beginning to about mid seventies.
- 8:35I mean, it really, really gets into it pretty in depth in regards to
- 8:39all the models and different stuff.
- 8:40And if you're a nerd or a geek guy, like we are in regards to reading it.
- 8:44A layman would probably look at it and get bored after reading three pages.
- 8:47But you know, you get into it, man.
- 8:48It's just all the nooks and crannies.
- 8:49And it's just, it's a fabulous book.
- 8:51Well, what I like about what you're doing with the provenance series, and
- 8:55I want to give a little nod and maybe some credit and a spoiler alert to an
- 8:59upcoming, what should I buy episode that you were on where we sort of went far
- 9:03field and started geeking out about.
- 9:05Replicas versus the real thing and Ferrari Californias, aka
- 9:09the Ferris Bueller Ferrari.
- 9:10And then you were talking about the big headlight, the little headlight, the
- 9:12caged headlight, the covered headlight.
- 9:14You're like, there's all these variations.
- 9:16Which California are you talking about?
- 9:18And so I kind of found it funny timing wise that provenance
- 9:21came out soon after that.
- 9:23And I definitely understand where you're going because there are those
- 9:26little nuances and it is kind of fun.
- 9:28To dig deeper into the Ferraris because, you know, some people say I
- 9:31saw one Ferrari, I've seen them all.
- 9:33And really that's not true.
- 9:35No, not a hundred percent.
- 9:36Right.
- 9:37It's when you really start digging into it, you start
- 9:39realizing each one's different.
- 9:41You're like, I was just down in Tennessee the other weekend, similar.
- 9:43Hey, it was that model, but there was all those little differences.
- 9:47And it's fun when you have other people stand around that realize they aren't
- 9:50into Ferrari, but you know, they love the car because they love what it is.
- 9:53But then you start talking to them about the little things like, Oh, wow.
- 9:56Oh, really?
- 9:57Oh, wow.
- 9:57Oh, so that's the, you know, you really start teaching and you can just see their
- 10:00eyes light up because it creates that interest level where, you know, they're
- 10:03going to go back and start looking at it more and you really start diving deep
- 10:06into the brand itself, which is fantastic.
- 10:09When we turn the page.
- 10:10And start talking about modern Ferraris, like the 296 and the Puro Sangue, and
- 10:15some of the other concepts that have come out in the last couple of years.
- 10:18Are they as bespoke as they used to be?
- 10:20And what are your thoughts on some of the new cars?
- 10:22Bespoke to the point of, Hey, I'll pick my colors.
- 10:26Paint the sample like Porsche, right?
- 10:27Yeah, exactly.
- 10:28I mean, that's about it.
- 10:29I mean, yeah, obviously you have that crazy ass options list to go nuts
- 10:33on where you could spend it on, you know, just as much on the cars as you
- 10:35can on options, but bespoke is kind of a broad term in regards to it.
- 10:40You know, you get some people that just do some stupid, stupid things with colors
- 10:44and whatnot, because they want to have one on one and green interior, pink exterior,
- 10:49doing something really crazy like that.
- 10:50I mean, they'll let you do it.
- 10:51Cause if you got the checkbook, they don't care, but like getting like
- 10:54true bespoke, it's just not there.
- 10:56I mean, all it is is just an options list.
- 10:58Is what it boils down to.
- 10:59There was a lot of talk about the Purosaga, which is the Ferrari
- 11:04SUV, and then it sort of got quiet.
- 11:06Is that thing going into production?
- 11:08Has it gone into production?
- 11:09Or are we just supposed to forget about it?
- 11:11No, no, it's into production.
- 11:12I think they're starting to do the deliveries in Europe, not until
- 11:16end of 2024 for the United States.
- 11:18I think there's a couple on the ground.
- 11:20You're not going to see them because all those restrictions they put on it
- 11:23in regards to reselling and everything like that, because if you were on the
- 11:26list and you got picked and you were able to buy one and order one, they're going
- 11:30to have all the restrictions in regards to what you can and can't do with it
- 11:32in regards to reselling and all that, because if you get blacklisted, then
- 11:36forget it, you're never going to be able to get another special car like that.
- 11:39You know, everything you read about it.
- 11:40I mean, I'd love to drive it.
- 11:41I think it looks great.
- 11:43It's kind of separates itself apart.
- 11:45Now you say SUV, but I mean, really it's just a tall station wagon is all
- 11:50it really is, you know, they cleaned it up from say the FF, what that wasn't the
- 11:53GT for Lusa, which is just butt ugly.
- 11:55It's a nice car, man.
- 11:56I like to drive it.
- 11:57Kudos to them for coming out with the V12 right out of the gate and says, Hey,
- 12:01we're going to stuff the 296 motor in there with the V6 twin turbo, which,
- 12:05which I mean, you're still going to get obscene horsepower, but no, Hey,
- 12:07let's go true V12, put that in there.
- 12:10That could be one thing that's slowing things down a bit, but supposedly.
- 12:14They're limiting how many they're going to build because that's
- 12:17what everyone's talking about.
- 12:17Oh, this is going to take him to over 15, 000 cars a year or 20, 000 cars.
- 12:21Yeah.
- 12:21They'll sell as many as they can build.
- 12:23Like Porsche with the Cayenne got that blue with their sales
- 12:26numbers out of the water.
- 12:27They're like limiting how many they're going to build.
- 12:29So it'll be interesting to see because stakeholders and money talk more than
- 12:34say, tradition and say, limiting that.
- 12:35So, you know, they're going to get on the board and say, wait a minute.
- 12:38I can get $8 million instead of $4 million if we just triple production.
- 12:43Triple production money talks.
- 12:44Now the 2 96, on the other hand, a lot of us were privy to it in race trim
- 12:50before seeing the actual street card.
- 12:52This year it's showing at the Rolex 24 hours wasn't as great as people expected.
- 12:57People were thinking that the 2, 9 6 was gonna come out of the box.
- 13:00And be faster than the 488 GT3, which it really wasn't.
- 13:04Unlike the 499X, which just blew everybody away.
- 13:08The 296 was sort of like a want want, but they've been
- 13:10refining it throughout the year.
- 13:12I got the opportunity to see the street version at Car Week this year.
- 13:16And I tell you what, at first glance, I wasn't sure what I was looking at.
- 13:19Because it shares some similar qualities to, let's say, the NSX.
- 13:23To the Ford GT, the one that just exited a couple of years ago, but then you look
- 13:28at it and you're like, I can see the Dino.
- 13:30I can see the three Oh eight.
- 13:31I can see the heritage in it.
- 13:33It's nice to not be that evolved three 60, four 30 look that's been
- 13:38going on for quite a long time.
- 13:39I like how they kind of went backwards a little bit.
- 13:41And I want to see more of those cars on the road.
- 13:43And I want to see it succeed in racing.
- 13:45And we'll talk about that here in a second too.
- 13:47So I wanted to get your thoughts, your pulse on the market
- 13:49with respect to the two 96.
- 13:51I think it's a gorgeous car.
- 13:52Of course, I mean, our entry level cars, 400, 000.
- 13:56I think it's great.
- 13:57You know, smaller, more nimble.
- 13:59That motor's phenomenal for what they're getting out of it.
- 14:01No lag, no nut.
- 14:02And I, you know, I have yet to have the opportunity to drive one, but
- 14:05yeah, I think it's an outstanding car.
- 14:07I mean, to hit it out of the park with it.
- 14:09They're selling like crazy.
- 14:10And a lot of people thought, well, it's the baby Ferrari or just, Hey,
- 14:13it's like how the Dino was, was a real Ferrari, that kind of stuff.
- 14:16But no, I think they did a phenomenal job with it, you know, because you race
- 14:20is on that rare occasion, they're going to come out of the gate and that car is
- 14:23going to just nail it and be balls quick, but it takes a long time to develop a car
- 14:28and get it going where it needs to be.
- 14:30Well, and not only that, the balance of performance, the way they figured
- 14:33that out, we were seeing just this huge discrepancy where it seemed almost
- 14:38unfair, like as an example, the iron dame's Lamborghini Huracan couldn't come
- 14:43out of the pocket or keep up with a 911.
- 14:45I'm like, even in real life, the Lamborghini is quicker than the 911.
- 14:48What is going on?
- 14:49Like did they disconnect?
- 14:50Four of the cylinders didn't make any sense.
- 14:53. So if they were carrying over BOP rules from last season onto a new
- 14:58car, or the BOP rules that apply to the 4 88, to the 2 9 6, well, you
- 15:02went from AV eight to a twin turbo six, none of this stuff equates out.
- 15:06So it's been a rebuilding year for Ferrari.
- 15:09I just went to Petit Le Mans, I gotta say, I was happy to not see
- 15:14the 488 still out in the field because earlier this year, they were
- 15:17campaigning both cars at the same time.
- 15:19And you're like, the 296 is losing to the 488.
- 15:22This is ridiculous.
- 15:23Overall, they actually did really well, surprisingly well in GTLM,
- 15:28whatever class you want to call it now, because they keep changing their mind.
- 15:31It took third overall in the championship with Reesey
- 15:35competizione and fifth with AF Corsa.
- 15:36That's not bad in the production based GT car classes.
- 15:40And even at petite, which this year was exciting.
- 15:43There was a lot of drama, breakdowns, wrecks within the last 10 minutes
- 15:46of the race, things like that.
- 15:48They placed sixth and ninth and I'm like.
- 15:50That's not terrible for a brand new car.
- 15:53That's very respectable.
- 15:55Very respectable.
- 15:56The one big thing is we all know is they won a Le Mans overall.
- 16:00So everything else subsequently that's coming after that is,
- 16:02Hey, yeah, they'll figure it out.
- 16:04What now?
- 16:04Hey, we still, we won Le Mans.
- 16:05So, I mean, I say they're getting a pass.
- 16:07That was very respectable showing on their part.
- 16:09It takes time, development dollars.
- 16:11Luckily, they have multiple teams running the cars.
- 16:14You have all that input going and it'll get there.
- 16:17So it's interesting to see Tom.
- 16:19Daytona in January, how it all plays out.
- 16:23They have all winter to work on it.
- 16:24For sure.
- 16:25And the classing between WEC and IMSA is getting tighter as well.
- 16:29So there's going to be room for the 499 to participate in more of the
- 16:33IMSA series throughout next season.
- 16:35So I'm hoping to see the 499 at Rolex, not just Sebring, right?
- 16:40Where they chose to come out.
- 16:41After the first race and crush everybody and then disappear for the rest of
- 16:45the season, but also see them go to petite, maybe go to the Glen, maybe
- 16:48go to VIR, some of the bigger tracks and stretch the legs of the 499 here.
- 16:53Stateside.
- 16:54Yeah.
- 16:54And I know Audi had a propensity to do the same thing in the early days with the R8.
- 16:59They come here, use petite as like a test race or they do something else.
- 17:02So they were preparing for Lamont, but it would have been nice to see the 499
- 17:06at the season finale and just come out and add even more drama to that race.
- 17:10But yeah.
- 17:10There's next year too.
- 17:12So switching gears a little bit, I want to talk about something you and
- 17:17Mark have mentioned several times on previous, what should I buy episodes?
- 17:21And that's six speed swapping some of the four series, like the four, five,
- 17:26eight, four thirties and so on Ferraris.
- 17:29And that's becoming more popular.
- 17:31And there's some conversion kits out there.
- 17:32Is that right?
- 17:33Your main one to get it done.
- 17:35If you want it done correctly, cause they spent, I don't know how many years
- 17:37it was reverse engineering, engineering.
- 17:39It is EAG down in Texas.
- 17:41You know, they sell the kit, but I mean, if you really want it done yet,
- 17:44you send it to your car there, but you know, it's about a year, year and a
- 17:47half wait list, obviously they've made a lot more manuals in three 60, but
- 17:50like in a four 30, it was a lot less.
- 17:52But that transmission that was in there, they just hooked up the
- 17:55hydraulic stuff to be able to do it.
- 17:57So it's not that big of an ask to revert it back to a manual.
- 18:01That's similar to the SMG BMWs.
- 18:06Correct.
- 18:07Exactly.
- 18:07That was good.
- 18:07Yeah.
- 18:08If I can bring it up because you're seeing that.
- 18:10A bit more too now because cost savings and whatnot, you know,
- 18:13trying to find a factory manual E46 M3 wise, depending on mileage.
- 18:18I mean, you could be mid thirties up to mid 60s, 70s, you know, depending
- 18:21on mileage and whatnot on it.
- 18:23But no, you look at a factory manual for 30 right now with decent, say low miles.
- 18:29You're 300, 000, 350, 000.
- 18:32I was looking at one the other day and it was oddly enough, yellow, 50, 000 miles.
- 18:37F430 factory manual asking 250, 000, 50, 000 miles on it.
- 18:41So, I mean, that tells you where they're going value wise.
- 18:43Now you look at a 360 factory manual, you're about 150 to 175.
- 18:48I mean, those are creeping up, but you got such a performance jump.
- 18:51Between the 360 to 430 hundred horsepower torque, everything.
- 18:55I mean, it's just, it's a big leap in, especially in going from belts to
- 18:59chains and everything in the motor.
- 19:00So your service thing's a lot different and everything like that.
- 19:03Say you find a 430 with F1 training, 50, 000 miles, you
- 19:07might be at a hundred, 110 grand.
- 19:09So what you can do EAG cost you 40, 000, bam, for 150 grand, you got
- 19:14yourself a manual 430 that a factory one was going to cost you 200, 000 more.
- 19:19If you're going into it to buy it as an investment, yeah, you want
- 19:22to buy the factory one because it's just going to go up in value, but
- 19:25I haven't driven a swap one yet.
- 19:27But they say it's actually almost better than the factory.
- 19:30It's tighter.
- 19:31It's just engineered better and how they did it.
- 19:34Because again, no, you're taking technology that was done 2006, 2009.
- 19:38It did the last factory manual for 30.
- 19:40I think they only did four or three or something like that that year.
- 19:43But you have all that time to better componentry, better materials, everything
- 19:47that to engineer and get it in there.
- 19:49So they say it actually, the feel and that's a lot tighter and better.
- 19:53I would say investment wise, Hey, yeah, you're going to buy a factory one, but
- 19:56if you want to drive your car, why not?
- 19:57It shouldn't matter.
- 19:58And if it's going to be the same, if not better performance
- 20:00wise, get a swap one and do it.
- 20:02Because even though a swap, when you get out there, buy one high mileage,
- 20:05you get it done, you go out and buy when it's already done, you know, Hey,
- 20:08you're still one 60 to 200, obviously depending on mileage, colors, that
- 20:13kind of stuff, so you're still way, way cheaper than buying a factory manual car.
- 20:18Makes sense to me.
- 20:19It's a car you want to drive and enjoy it.
- 20:21I'd love to be in the position where I got so much money, where, okay,
- 20:24I'm going to buy that car and let it sit in the corner because it's
- 20:26just going to appreciate in value.
- 20:27I'll drive it once a year, drive it two miles.
- 20:29I get something like that, I'm driving the thing.
- 20:31What's interesting is you don't see it hardly, is with Lamborghini.
- 20:35That's true.
- 20:35Their e gear transmission is horrendous.
- 20:38But, you know, I'm amazed that you don't really hear more about someone
- 20:42swapping Lamborghini ones, because it shouldn't be too difficult.
- 20:47I mean, cause shit, you could probably just go buy a wrecked
- 20:49R8 tranny and dump it in there.
- 20:51It shouldn't be that difficult to engineer that to redo it.
- 20:53Cause it's the same thing as a Ferrari.
- 20:55It's a single clutch.
- 20:56They rigged it up to be able to use it.
- 20:58It wasn't a full blown double clutch, everything like that.
- 21:01But I think it's going to be a lot more prevalent, especially in the Ferraris.
- 21:05They did the 360, then they went to the 430 because obviously those are
- 21:08the most, I guess, say abundant, but you're starting to see the 612s.
- 21:12The other one is the 599.
- 21:14They only built 20 factory manual 599s.
- 21:17And right now you're probably getting close to probably
- 21:19easing 800 to a million dollars.
- 21:21I think the last one was earlier this year, one sold
- 21:24for 700 something at auction.
- 21:26Obviously they're not out there.
- 21:28And again, it's going to be a situation.
- 21:30You spend that kind of money, you buy it, they ain't going to drive it.
- 21:32They're parked it in a corner.
- 21:33But hey, you do that swap through EAG, you got yourself a manual.
- 21:37You see quite a few of them out there and become more prevalent.
- 21:39You know, and I don't know, people watching Hoobie's Garage, like
- 21:41he just bought his, you know, hey, that thing's fantastic.
- 21:44And you've seen a few other ones.
- 21:45That car itself is gorgeous.
- 21:46You know, driving it's phenomenal.
- 21:48You got your 550s.
- 21:50More factory manuals, but 575s again not top of my head, but there were very few
- 21:54575 factory manuals built So they're doing swaps because again, that's a phenomenal
- 21:59car to drive for an engine v12 great tour.
- 22:01It's a great great car It's just baffling thinking about it that they started
- 22:05reducing the manuals and everyone's oh, I want this I want you to let me pedal
- 22:08box, but now it wants the manual and I'm waiting for Ferrari to do a limited
- 22:13production of, say, 25 cars of actually building a factory manual, whatever.
- 22:18Build a new car, put a six speed, seven speed in it, or whatever.
- 22:22I'm waiting for that day because that demand's there and someone just will
- 22:25have to give them a blank check and then Ferrari will fill out the amount.
- 22:28Because I would think that the demand there is so high, the opportunity to
- 22:32make gobs of money is just too enticing.
- 22:35Not to take us down another...
- 22:37Bucatini hole.
- 22:38But I wonder how many of these swaps are really challengers that have been
- 22:42wrecked after cars and coffee, right?
- 22:44How many of those Tremec six speeds bolt up to Ferraris, right?
- 22:48It's all Stellantis now.
- 22:49It's all one big happy family since 2013.
- 22:52So really curious how much of that's going on without being
- 22:55said and things like that.
- 22:56But we'll put a pin in that and maybe talk about it another time.
- 22:59So another section on the show, and we'll give a little teaser
- 23:02here, is to Lost and Found.
- 23:04I recently came across something I think you would appreciate, William.
- 23:07I was at Petit Le Mans, and I almost missed the opportunity, because I had
- 23:11it on my list of things to grab before I left, and I stopped by a vintage book
- 23:15stand that was there, and of all things sitting on the shelf, a bargain find!
- 23:19The biography of Enzo Ferrari.
- 23:22As written by Brock Yates.
- 23:24Oh, I bought that.
- 23:25And it was a whopping 10 bucks.
- 23:2810 bucks?
- 23:29That's it?
- 23:29That's it.
- 23:30It was awesome.
- 23:31The deal.
- 23:31That's a steal.
- 23:32Yeah, for 10, that's big.
- 23:34I think that mine was 20 something.
- 23:35I bought that one, Brock.
- 23:36The first one I read.
- 23:38It was more of a love letter to Enzo, the person that wrote it, kind
- 23:41of glossing over his other stuff.
- 23:43But the one from Brock is supposed to be just like, hey, he doesn't hold back
- 23:47and he really tells it was his style.
- 23:48Yep.
- 23:49I'm finishing up that other book, then I'm gonna start on that thing,
- 23:52because I'm excited to read it.
- 23:53Because Brock really, hey, he tells it like it is, it's supposed
- 23:55to be really, really good.
- 23:56Well, talking of other things that were recently found, what
- 23:59about the original Abandoned?
- 24:02Testarossa factory that still remains in place.
- 24:05Complete time capsule.
- 24:06Watching that video.
- 24:07I don't know if it's an Italian thing or what.
- 24:10It must be a European thing because it's like, they stop production and just, hey,
- 24:13they lock the door and just walk away.
- 24:15Because you look at what's in there.
- 24:17I mean, shit.
- 24:17I mean, it looks like, hey.
- 24:1920, 30 million, you get that thing operating back as a top notch factor
- 24:22again, you would think some of these companies out there, especially the
- 24:26history behind what was built there, gorgeous building, great location.
- 24:30I mean, it wouldn't take all that much to get it back up and
- 24:32going, but it's just baffling.
- 24:34That's like, they basically end of the shift.
- 24:37Everyone walked out, they locked the door and said, see ya, didn't come back.
- 24:40And we talked about that a little bit on the what should I buy Italian cars
- 24:43episode, where it's sort of like, well we built three of them, we're good, we
- 24:46achieved what we needed to, and then we'll move on to the next thing, right?
- 24:50You know, back in the early 1900s and whatnot, you know, hey man, they
- 24:53refurbished it, they used it, they kept those things for a hundred years,
- 24:56but to your point, hey, we're going to spend a hundred million dollars.
- 24:59Hey, we've built five, 10 cars.
- 25:01We're good.
- 25:02Close the doors.
- 25:02We'll go build another one down the road.
- 25:04And it's just, I've seen the amount of money spent on us.
- 25:07Build it, then leave it.
- 25:08It's just baffling.
- 25:09You think someone would repurpose it for something automotive
- 25:13related, especially because Of who it was owned by, by Pininfarina.
- 25:16I mean, come on.
- 25:17And you're seeing it too, like, with car dealerships are going the same route
- 25:21in regards to just going to build a new one and leaving the old one there.
- 25:25And we're going to talk about that in a little bit too.
- 25:27So, it's kind of funny, we look back over time to talk about Ferrari.
- 25:31If you were a fan of HBO's Entourage, almost as a joke, They foreshadowed
- 25:37the coming of the Enzo movie, since we're talking about Enzo and his
- 25:40biography, we all kind of laughed it off.
- 25:42Oh, you know, he's doing his, you know, Aquaman thing and this and that.
- 25:45It's really not about this Ferrari movie, but they kept talking about it.
- 25:48And here we are.
- 25:49Geez, on the precipice of maybe 20 years later, right?
- 25:52That entourage has been on the air.
- 25:53And they're actually going to do it.
- 25:55Michael Mann is putting together the Ferrari movie and the
- 25:58official trailer is out, right?
- 25:59Adam Driver is going to play Enzo.
- 26:01We joked about that in the past too, sort of like, is he now the token old
- 26:05Italian guy after doing House of Gucci and all the rest of these movies?
- 26:09But watching that trailer, I'm kind of excited.
- 26:12I haven't been to the movie theater in a while to go out.
- 26:15At Christmas and check it out.
- 26:16If they do an IMAX, that'd be awesome, just to hear those cars.
- 26:19Following it while they're doing the filming of it, because like
- 26:21Patrick Dempsey did some driving.
- 26:23You know, they got Justin Bell.
- 26:24I'm trying to remember who else they got, but they got some decent guys
- 26:26to drive, you know, and they got their hands on some legit machinery.
- 26:30Michael Mann's a phenomenal director, you know, and they did it right.
- 26:33And they didn't try and do it where it was like over a 20, 30 year span.
- 26:37It's basically over a course of 1957 of the summer of 57, when like
- 26:42a lot of shit happened, you know, regarding deaths that one summer where
- 26:46it's kind of just that main focus.
- 26:48So it's got that storyline to it.
- 26:50So you're not trying to stretch 20 years into two hours, which is great.
- 26:55Like they did with the Lamborghini movie, which was.
- 26:57Terrible.
- 26:57Oh god.
- 26:58Yeah, that was horrible.
- 26:59I don't think people realize it either because when you first think because
- 27:02adam driver's a tall guy But I don't think people realize enzo ferrari
- 27:06was six two and for an italian.
- 27:08He was a giant Yes, he was you think back then most of them were like
- 27:11five eight five nine eight, man He's a giant but he was six two.
- 27:15He's a big dude watching the preview and everything like that You know
- 27:19adam driver does a great job I don't think Penelope Cruz was the best thing
- 27:23because Enzo's wife was, I hate to say it, sorry, but she was not a looker.
- 27:28That's for sure.
- 27:29She was a bit loony.
- 27:31I think they did right with his mistress.
- 27:33So it is pretty interesting to see how the whole thing plays out, but
- 27:36the racing thing looks phenomenal.
- 27:38That would definitely be the one, hey, you go to the theater to watch
- 27:40it, and you're definitely gonna be watching a bunch of times at home.
- 27:43You know, it's like Ford versus Ferrari.
- 27:44You know what it was going in, it's not gonna be authentic like that, but
- 27:48a great movie, especially if you're a car lover, you'll watch it, hey,
- 27:51it's on, you're gonna put it on.
- 27:52It's just one of those things, so I'm excited for it.
- 27:55I think it's gonna be pretty good.
- 27:56Another piece of news coming out of New York City, Ferrari took on Manhattan
- 28:00with a gala to show off the brand.
- 28:03And I wondered to myself, Is that really necessary?
- 28:06Yeah, exactly.
- 28:07I mean, that was just basically like, Hey, yeah, we're Ferrari.
- 28:10We're going to spend all this money.
- 28:12And just that was not cheap.
- 28:13Look who they brought.
- 28:14I mean, they had the drivers because it coincided with the Austin, you know,
- 28:17F1 race, you know, Adam drivers there.
- 28:19But I mean, earlier they took over and all the cars.
- 28:21There really was no reason for it.
- 28:24Other than just to say, Hey, look at us.
- 28:26Hey, we're Ferrari.
- 28:27It's taking things to a different level in regards to doing that stuff.
- 28:30Look at Porsches.
- 28:31Porsche does the rent sport.
- 28:32Hey, everything's on the track.
- 28:34You know, Ferrari does it and we're going to do it in New York City, right?
- 28:38Downtown.
- 28:38We're going to take over a whole block and by the museum, which is
- 28:41everything and just over the top.
- 28:43And that's why we call it rich people.
- 28:45Fangs.
- 28:58So Tanya has been waiting patiently in the background and I want to turn
- 29:02the microphone over to her and let you guys talk about one of her favorite
- 29:07disciplines of motor sport, Ferrari.
- 29:09Yes, Formula One.
- 29:12Old news, like three races ago, Singapore.
- 29:15Finally, Ferrari gets a win, thanks to their number two driver, who
- 29:21really should probably at this point be their number one driver.
- 29:24I agree.
- 29:24Charles Leclerc ain't gonna, he'll never win a championship.
- 29:27He's a brat.
- 29:28He doesn't have the mental toughness to do it.
- 29:30When he gets under stress, he crashes.
- 29:31There seemed to be such promise, but Carlos...
- 29:34Started out slow, but he's developed far further, I think,
- 29:38and he's not given enough credit.
- 29:39Oh, I agree.
- 29:40Especially his strategy on track, because it was a brilliant move at the end.
- 29:45Oh, gotcha.
- 29:47If you watch it, you know, and especially listen to the radio conversation,
- 29:50Carlos is very level headed.
- 29:52Yes.
- 29:52He's very calm in his approach in that, and his strategy, everything
- 29:55like that, where, you know, LeClair gets very flustered, can stare at
- 29:58the radio and stuff like that, but.
- 30:00Carlos is like his dad, very calculated, thinks through it and
- 30:03just really kind of just dissects it.
- 30:05He goes, okay, this is what we need to do instead of just making these quick
- 30:08judgments and, you know, going at it.
- 30:10So, I mean, I'm a huge fan of Carlos.
- 30:12It's funny you bring up his dad.
- 30:13You ever seen the video of the two of them on the test track in the Ferrari?
- 30:17Oh, yeah.
- 30:18It's like watching a HPDE video.
- 30:20Like it's the instructor's board.
- 30:22The driver's just doing this thing.
- 30:23Like you know, 150 mile an hour.
- 30:26Like it's no big deal.
- 30:28Yeah.
- 30:28Like, Oh, look at that.
- 30:29Oh yeah.
- 30:29Hey, did you find out what, yeah.
- 30:30Oh God.
- 30:31That was hilarious.
- 30:32Two peas in a pod.
- 30:33Definitely.
- 30:34You know, we haven't talked much about Ferrari and Formula One because it's
- 30:37been overshadowed by Max Verstappen's 48 second leads at every race.
- 30:42It feels like the 1960s all over again when Jack Brabham would win
- 30:45the race by a minute and a half.
- 30:47You're like, how?
- 30:49That's been changing.
- 30:50Here's the argument though.
- 30:51I mean, everyone's kind of bitching about it, but look.
- 30:53Lewis Hamilton was doing it for eight seasons, and yeah, there was some tight
- 30:57stuff with Nico, and hey, you know, Bodas, you know, give him a little run
- 31:00for his money, but look, he was there.
- 31:02He had Schumacher era.
- 31:03I mean, he was blowing people away for all those straight seasons.
- 31:06You know, so it's just how it goes because, you know, the way the
- 31:09rules are, someone's gonna nail it.
- 31:11But everyone else can be kind of close and you got your also right.
- 31:14You know, that's what was cool about some of those series, you
- 31:16know, they used to do back in the day, like doing, you know, IRA.
- 31:19You know, I had the M1s and doing those, putting everyone in the same type of car.
- 31:22Let's see who's the best driver because everyone's got the same car.
- 31:24That proves it right there.
- 31:25It's awesome to see McLaren getting back going like they are.
- 31:29I'm a big fan of Lando Norris.
- 31:30He's a very personal person.
- 31:32If you ever watch his stuff off the track, you know, it just seems very real.
- 31:35Doesn't go to his head in regards to the stuff, but it's great to see that,
- 31:38you know, and it just after you're watching Austin couple more laps, Lewis
- 31:42would have caught for stopping him more.
- 31:44I don't know if he would have passed them, but you know, he was getting
- 31:46pretty close to catch them eventually to see this weekend in Mexico.
- 31:50Cause with the elevation and that stuff, things kind of have a
- 31:52tendency to level out a little bit.
- 31:54As I'm sure you guys are, and everyone here that's an F1
- 32:02fan of the spectacle.
- 32:03Eric's not interested.
- 32:04It's his least favorite form of motorsport.
- 32:07WRC.
- 32:07Yeah, I know.
- 32:08WRC, okay.
- 32:10There's no Ferraris!
- 32:12In world rally, although there have been some entered in the past, like
- 32:16off road three Oh eights and stuff.
- 32:17Don't make any sense to me, but you know, Hey, whatever, not since the days of the
- 32:21launch of Stratos, but they weren't all one big happy family back then either,
- 32:25but the question is, thoughts on the Vegas F1 race, the amount of money they're
- 32:30pouring into it, whatnot, I mean, it's.
- 32:32The race isn't till it wasn't 1 a.
- 32:34m.
- 32:34Yeah.
- 32:35Super late because of the European audiences and everything else.
- 32:38And, you know, trying to get it televised correctly, but I
- 32:41think the track layout's boring.
- 32:42It's going to be like any other street race, whether it's St.
- 32:45Petersburg or long beach or any of those where it's like, go down,
- 32:50turn around, make a left, come back the other way, the way you came.
- 32:53I mean, you can only do so much with.
- 32:54city square blocks.
- 32:56There are some good street races from back in the day that just
- 33:00don't exist anymore either.
- 33:01I would like to see Ferrari and Formula One return to places like Watkins Glen,
- 33:07which used to be the American Grand Prix for many, many years, or maybe back to
- 33:11most sport in Canada that remote Trump Blanc, you know, some of the other
- 33:15tracks that exist in North America that.
- 33:17Have had F1 in the past, but Vegas, you know, it's the first time since like
- 33:22Andretti was still running in formula one.
- 33:25So we're talking like the early eighties that there was a race in Vegas.
- 33:28So it's been dark for about 40 years.
- 33:30So it's cool that it's going back, but time will tell and it's next month.
- 33:34So let's, let's wait and see.
- 33:36Caesar's palace parking lot.
- 33:39I heard they turned the McCarran airport rental car area into the paddock.
- 33:43That's where they're doing all the like pit boxes and everything.
- 33:46Some of it's permanent, but a lot of that is just temporary, just baffling.
- 33:50Cause F1 itself is putting it on as the promoter, not some outside
- 33:55entry with that, and I think they're saying they poured like 500 million
- 33:58because of everything they had to do.
- 33:59And question B is, you know, they're repaving all this part for the track.
- 34:03I mean, is that, how long is that going to hold up in that heat and
- 34:06all the traffic getting driven on a regular basis every year, they're
- 34:09going to have to come in and spend.
- 34:1140 million on fixing it.
- 34:13Well, there's been a plan to close the strip to traffic,
- 34:16to make it pedestrian only.
- 34:18So maybe this is a way of using the formula one race as a catalyst to
- 34:22get to that end goal that they wanted anyway, which was to only have foot
- 34:26traffic on the famous Las Vegas strip.
- 34:28Gives those drunkards a little more space to kind of just stumble around.
- 34:33Well, going back to talking about Ferrari and Formula One, I
- 34:35thought it was interesting that they made a change to their floor
- 34:38design at the Japanese Grand Prix.
- 34:41Not that interesting.
- 34:42All the teams have been making changes every race.
- 34:45But what I'm asking is, did it help them?
- 34:47And I guess not, because they've only had one win so far, right?
- 34:49No, it didn't do much.
- 34:52I mean, she was asked if Martin did it, and Alonzo reverted back to the old one.
- 34:56You know, because it didn't do shit.
- 34:57It actually seemed like it was worse.
- 34:58But, you know, everyone seems to be making those changes.
- 35:01Haas made massive changes to everything on their car and didn't do crap.
- 35:05They thought maybe they're going to step up.
- 35:07And again, though, I mean, you're talking tenths of a second.
- 35:10You're not gaining a second, two seconds or anything.
- 35:12You're talking all this development to try to gain a tenth, two tenths.
- 35:17So minute.
- 35:18In regards to what you're getting pace wise to someone from the outside, you try
- 35:22to explain that just doesn't make sense, but man, it just, it's unbelievable.
- 35:25The amount of development and time and money, especially now it's cost cap
- 35:30and going in there, you have to be so methodical and so like who's making that
- 35:33decision, where are we exactly going to try and make an improvement because
- 35:37we're limited by what we can spend.
- 35:39So say it's a make or break situation, you know, back in the
- 35:42day when they're spending four or 500 million, it didn't matter.
- 35:44Hey, you do that.
- 35:45We'll try it or whatever, just throw everything at the wall.
- 35:47It's like, cross your fingers, hope it'll work, and, you know, I know,
- 35:50hey, you have all these simulators, you have all the computer, all that kind of
- 35:53stuff, to kind of simulate what's going on, but until you put it on the car,
- 35:57and go on that track, you don't know.
- 35:59Well, what we do know was foretold to us by a guest of Break Fix, our
- 36:04200th episode, so if you haven't tuned in, you need to go back.
- 36:07William was my co host when we had the one and only, the legendary Mario
- 36:12Andretti on the show, and he said, very matter of factly, That the name Andretti
- 36:17would be returning to Formula One.
- 36:18And so it has been written.
- 36:21And so it has come true.
- 36:23In the news!
- 36:24It's still not 100 percent confirmed.
- 36:26Just because they've gotten approval as an entry, it still doesn't mean
- 36:30they actually can get on the grid.
- 36:31But they're that much closer.
- 36:33Yeah, they still got to go through the teams.
- 36:35But, you know, my thought, and I don't think they want to go that route.
- 36:39But if it comes down to it, he takes him to court, he'll win.
- 36:43I mean, everything's written in contracts.
- 36:45Everything's agreed upon legally.
- 36:47They met the criteria, you know, and it kills me, it makes me laugh, it's okay,
- 36:50their delusion fee, everything was, alright, the 200 million, he had it.
- 36:53Then they all said, no, I think we'll make it 600.
- 36:55Well, wait a minute, it's written here amongst all your contracts, amongst all
- 36:59of you that you agreed upon, that they did this, they paid that, they're in.
- 37:02So now why can't you change it?
- 37:03And I know there's a big thing this past weekend in Austin in
- 37:06regards to Hey, it's personal.
- 37:09The talk was F1 actually went to Cadillac and said, you sure you don't want to
- 37:14go with someone else besides Andretti?
- 37:16Basically saying, hey, if you went with someone else besides
- 37:18Andretti, we'll let you in.
- 37:20No questions asked.
- 37:21And Michael trying to actually ambush Stefano Domenicali.
- 37:25Because to my colleagues, ghosting them, hunting them
- 37:28down in Austin to confront them.
- 37:30Hey, what's going on?
- 37:31It's just sad because you ask anyone, 99 percent of the people
- 37:35say, yes, we want him in there.
- 37:36It would be fabulous to have that name back in.
- 37:38He's already said he wants Colton Hurd as his driver, which would be phenomenal.
- 37:42You know, having an American here, awesome.
- 37:44If he got a second American driver, it'd be great, but you can't do that.
- 37:47You're going to have to have a European guy in there because someone's going to
- 37:49have to bring some cash to the table.
- 37:52Being so difficult.
- 37:53I just don't get it.
- 37:54I mean, I know it basically boils down to money.
- 37:57There's more to it.
- 37:58And I think that is not being said in regards to trying to create such a
- 38:02road block for them to get on the grid.
- 38:05He already bought a facility to start building the car.
- 38:08He's moving forward and spending the money.
- 38:10Come hell or high water.
- 38:11We're going to be on that grid.
- 38:12If it's not 2025, it will be 2026.
- 38:15Ideally, you want them on in 2025 to work out all the bugs, get the team
- 38:19together, and everyone be able to sort things out and how everything
- 38:22works and logistics, all that crap.
- 38:24So that way, 2026, with the new regs, everything like that,
- 38:27you hit the ground running.
- 38:28They'd have to decide on it by, it's got to be by February or
- 38:32March of next year, it'd have to be like either in or out, right?
- 38:36They're trying to get on the grid by 25.
- 38:38It definitely has to happen at some point next year, early
- 38:41next year, I would assume.
- 38:42I haven't seen a date.
- 38:43Yeah, I would think that it's got to be done beginning of next
- 38:46year to be able to green light this so they can get everything
- 38:49put together and get stuff going.
- 38:51It'll be interesting to see, but yeah, they need to be just awesome.
- 38:55One.
- 38:56The Andretti name, but to see a Mario strutting on the, you know,
- 39:00he'll have a big role in it.
- 39:02Just having them back on there just would do wonders.
- 39:04Also for the American audience, it would bring back a lot of the ones that
- 39:08they seem to be losing just because of what's going on for stopping.
- 39:11I think that would just also not only bring those people back.
- 39:14But bring back more, just build that momentum back up and justify having
- 39:19these three races in the United States.
- 39:21Like we mentioned before, you can't really talk about Ferrari without
- 39:25talking about Formula One and vice versa.
- 39:27So we sort of doubled down on this showcase and we have one last
- 39:30bit of Formula One news to cover.
- 39:31What's up with this disqualification, which includes Ferrari's number one man?
- 39:37These wood planks from 1952, whatever they have on these cars.
- 39:43You know, everyone says, Oh, it's a good barometer or whatnot to kind of keep
- 39:46an eye and be sure everyone's legit.
- 39:48But I'm like, come on, you got wood planks on these cars underneath it.
- 39:52If they would have pulled all the cars, probably disqualified almost
- 39:56all of them, probably 18 out of the 20, just because the strategy.
- 40:00You know, anyone that was, did a long first stint was going to be disqualified
- 40:03just because the weight of the car, full tanks, everything, it just happened to be
- 40:07those four and look, the two got yanked, but those two were out of strategy.
- 40:12They did a long first stint.
- 40:13The other two people didn't, there would have been a lot of
- 40:15people getting disqualified.
- 40:17And that's it to me is just a little weird as they still have that on the
- 40:21cars as a technical aspect of it.
- 40:24To monitor the stuff.
- 40:26It's kind of weird.
- 40:27So Tanya, what is William talking about here?
- 40:29These things pirate ships They walk the plank underneath the cars Well,
- 40:34there's more home depot stuff, right?
- 40:38Well, since we combined our ferrari and motorsports news I want to remind
- 40:42everybody that our motorsports news is brought to us in partnership by the
- 40:45international motor racing research center I just want to let you know
- 40:48that you are still able to enter the sweepstakes for the 2024 corvette e ray
- 40:52that they're giving away And you can sign up for that through April of 2024.
- 40:57There's only two more events left on the IMRRC schedule.
- 41:01Both of them coincide with each other.
- 41:03On November the 2nd, they're doing the International Real Wheel Fim Festival,
- 41:06celebrating historical racing at 5 p.
- 41:09m.
- 41:09at the Downtown Watkins Glen Movie Theater.
- 41:11They're going to be showing four or five different films from 5 to 8 p.
- 41:15m., which will ring in the beginning of the Seventh annual Argettsinger symposium
- 41:20of motor sports history and racing.
- 41:21And that'll be held at Watkins Glen international on November the
- 41:24third, which is a Friday and then November the fourth, the Saturdays.
- 41:27I have the schedule in front of me.
- 41:29We're looking at 18 different presenters over those two
- 41:32days, and you'll be able to.
- 41:34Catch all of that via our live stream on Twitch, and
- 41:37that'll be available at twitch.
- 41:38tv forward slash grand touring motor sports, and we'll be running that all day
- 41:42and there'll be other great IMRC things going on throughout those three days.
- 41:46So if you can't make it in person, you can catch it all on the live stream.
- 41:49So tune in for that.
- 41:51It's time we switch and talk about Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche news.
- 41:55I saw an e tron GT the other day on the road.
- 41:58Even my wife commented and said, wow, that's a really, really good looking car.
- 42:02And I said, yeah, you know, I'm not a huge fan yet of some of these EVs cause
- 42:06they look like spaceship and the Taycan.
- 42:08Is it Taycan or Taycan?
- 42:10Depends on the day of the week, right?
- 42:12Porsche, Porsche.
- 42:13Exactly tomato, tomato, but I do respect the take in.
- 42:19And I understand that the e tron GT is similar underneath, you know, they
- 42:23share the A8 and some of the other cars in the VAG family and whatnot, but
- 42:27then only maybe because big brother is always listening to our conversations.
- 42:32Do I get this article that slides across my desk and says prices of EVs
- 42:36are falling across the board, but.
- 42:38Audi has dropped a record setting 50, 000 off the price of which car?
- 42:45The e tron GT.
- 42:46And that made me give it not a second look, but a third.
- 42:49Oh God, it's a gorgeous car.
- 42:51Even in the comparisons and whatnot, everyone's like, if you have
- 42:53your Drellas, why would you spend the extra money on the Porsche?
- 42:56Get the Audi.
- 42:57It's just aesthetic.
- 42:58It's nicer.
- 42:58It's just everything about it.
- 43:00The Porsche's driving dynamics are a little bit above it.
- 43:03For what you're going to do 99.
- 43:05the time in that car, The audience is better by and then doing that just
- 43:09makes it that much more attractive.
- 43:10The only problem is it's still an electric car.
- 43:12My only counter argument to the e tron GT is the RS6 Avant
- 43:18because I am a long roof guy.
- 43:20I love station wagons.
- 43:21Love that car.
- 43:22The RS6 is aggressive.
- 43:24It's beautiful.
- 43:25It is still gas.
- 43:27But there's just something about that card, that it's a
- 43:29hard decision between the two.
- 43:30Tanya, if you had to make the decision, what would it be?
- 43:33How much is our six?
- 43:34Let's take the money off the table.
- 43:37We're talking with big money Ross, come on.
- 43:40Money is no question now.
- 43:41Yeah, but you're talking to not big money Tanya.
- 43:47Just aesthetically.
- 43:48I guess the e tron maybe.
- 43:50You like that low slung roof, almost two door look to it, right?
- 43:54Reminiscent of the old Audis.
- 43:56Yeah.
- 43:56I like that.
- 43:57Got some haunches on it.
- 43:58RS6 all day long.
- 43:59That thing is just gorgeous.
- 44:01If I could talk my wife into driving a wagon as a daily, I'd have one of those
- 44:05in the garage for her at Sliver Benz.
- 44:07I just think that thing's, it's just absolutely stunning.
- 44:10Obviously I think that RS6 is going to hold his value a
- 44:12lot better than the e tron.
- 44:13You start going down that rabbit hole, regardless of the battery
- 44:16replacement, all that kind of crap.
- 44:17And the other thing that scares me about those, especially getting
- 44:20that is man, just the electronics, everything on that car, I mean.
- 44:23Even on an RS6, but it's not to that extent what those pure electric cars
- 44:27are, but man, it's unknown territory what happens in 10 years with that car.
- 44:31And not only that, looking at it from your perspective, the production
- 44:34numbers on the e tron GT are going to be higher than the station wagon and
- 44:38traditionally the Avant models in the Audi lineup, they are usually limited runs.
- 44:43So there's going to be more scarcity, especially in an RS6.
- 44:47Avant, then there will be in the e tron GT, which is going to
- 44:49raise its value over the longterm.
- 44:51So it'd be interesting to see how that plays out.
- 44:53You look, the ones that are a couple of years old that have, you know,
- 44:5610, 000 miles on there's still basically almost at sticker is
- 44:59what people are getting them for.
- 45:00It's just holding its value all day long.
- 45:02I'm just.
- 45:03Yeah, I'm a big wagon fan myself, too.
- 45:05That's why I'm curious to see what happens here.
- 45:07Supposedly, they haven't announced that they are going to bring it, but they're
- 45:10bringing, you know, the M5 wagon.
- 45:12Of course, it's going to be, obviously, hybrid, gas, and electric combined.
- 45:15But supposedly, they're going to bring it to the states, but we shall see.
- 45:19Uh huh, I've heard that fairy tale before.
- 45:22Exactly.
- 45:2235.
- 45:26Three drive thrus ago, which was our Le Mans showcase episode, where we talked
- 45:30about the big automotive manufacturers switching over their connection ports on
- 45:37their EVs to be compatible with Tesla.
- 45:39And there's been an update in this and where are we at Tanya?
- 45:42Who has adopted the technology, and who hasn't?
- 45:45Apparently only two people have yet to join the NACs, which I think
- 45:50that's what Tesla is considered North American charging standard, and
- 45:53that is Volkswagen and Stellantis.
- 45:56Stellantis.
- 46:02I wonder what's going on there, right?
- 46:04I've always suspected, and I've heard rumors, that Tesla was never really
- 46:09interested in making cars, although They've been making cars for a while now.
- 46:12It's always been about the battery technology and the charging network
- 46:15and the charging technology and this and that Apple versus Android.
- 46:18Here we go.
- 46:19Now everybody's switching over to Tesla network because why is it more
- 46:24prolific than electrify America?
- 46:25Is it more available?
- 46:27How is this going to work?
- 46:28Am I going to be able to sign up for the Tesla network without?
- 46:32Being a Tesla owner?
- 46:33From my understanding too, manufacturing cars was just a vehicle for them for the
- 46:37battery technology to take that down a different path and really sell the battery
- 46:42technology and do that and make money.
- 46:44So they had to build the cars, but I don't want to say they were forced to, but they
- 46:47basically had to do the cars to prove out the battery technologies to do it.
- 46:50Look at the value of something.
- 46:52Where would you rather be as when you have all these charges, you can make money
- 46:55off of every manufactured car as compared to just the built, do the numbers.
- 47:00Hey, there you go.
- 47:01How long has the Model S been out?
- 47:0310 years now?
- 47:0512 years?
- 47:05Barely has changed.
- 47:06They haven't really done much.
- 47:07Yeah, now they're going to come out with a Cybertruck like that.
- 47:09But yeah, it's great to see that Ford wised up in regards to joining forces.
- 47:14Obviously, everyone saw Farley's little journey he had with the F 150 Lightning.
- 47:19How eye opening that was for him.
- 47:21And Secretary of Energy, well, she did it too.
- 47:24And blocking fast charging stuff with the gas cars because
- 47:27she could charge in the...
- 47:28People are calling the cops, saying, Hey, you can't block this.
- 47:30And blah, blah, blah.
- 47:31It's just really brought to the forefront in regards to how far behind
- 47:35all these be able to have a network to be able to charge a card and Tesla
- 47:39nailed it right out of the gate.
- 47:41Normally in these situations, these companies come out and they copy the best.
- 47:45It doesn't seem like they did because Electrify America
- 47:48and all that, they all suck.
- 47:49Their things always break.
- 47:50They're fast chargers never work.
- 47:52I mean, you see it, you know, you go on YouTube, you read about it, you know,
- 47:55people do it as none of this stuff works.
- 47:57It can't get it.
- 47:58Or you're sitting there because there's six chargers to work
- 48:00and there's 10 cars waiting.
- 48:02It's not like a gas pump where every five minutes someone else can
- 48:05pull up, you know, you're talking.
- 48:06An hour, hour and a half, you know, these people sitting there and it's so
- 48:11far off why Volkswagen and Stellantis wouldn't want to jump on board.
- 48:15I mean, if you look at it on paper, it makes sense to do it.
- 48:19Just make one unified charging adapter.
- 48:22Every single gas pump in the United States has it.
- 48:24Same nozzle, everything.
- 48:26We got the diesel, it's a little bigger, so it doesn't go in the gas one.
- 48:29Everyone's got the same size gas pump.
- 48:31Why wouldn't you have the same size charging port?
- 48:33So to piggyback off that announced earlier today, actually, is that Tesla
- 48:38and BP are kind of joining forces in a way Tesla selling their charging
- 48:44technology, whatever, to BP, they bought it for like over 100 million.
- 48:49So basically BP It's going to have branded charging stations.
- 48:53They'll have their name on the outside of it.
- 48:54And underneath the plastic covering is going to be a Tesla charging station.
- 48:58So they're going to be able to distribute more across their network.
- 49:03Think of all like the BP stations or Amoco stations or whatever else that they have.
- 49:07So this is.
- 49:08Something new in a sense, meaning like even more of these Tesla chargers are
- 49:12going to get out there in the world.
- 49:14Cause BP is going to have the ability to push them more than some of the other
- 49:17deals Tesla's already made that they've, I think sold their technology to smaller
- 49:21people who just haven't been able to really stretch that infrastructure out.
- 49:24What's interesting about that model though, is new to maybe the automotive
- 49:28world, but not new to the software and it world that's known as white boxing
- 49:32or white labeling, where you sell them the ready to go turnkey same solution
- 49:37that your brand has, and they slap their logo on it and they call it their own.
- 49:41So that's been going on in the computer world for a long time.
- 49:44And we've said before, and Tesla has openly admitted sometimes that they've
- 49:48modeled themselves after it companies and software factories and things like that.
- 49:52So.
- 49:52They're just employing principles that come from that industry, rather
- 49:55than the traditional ones of the automotive and petroleum industry,
- 49:58which is kind of interesting.
- 49:59You've seen them over in Europe.
- 50:01I think they've done one or two shell or something that, you know, they've
- 50:04opened up a true 100 percent EV station.
- 50:08Looks like a traditional gas station.
- 50:10You got your charge, whatnot, and you got your store.
- 50:13Curious to see how they go about doing those.
- 50:16I don't know if any of you ever been to a Bucky's.
- 50:19I was at my first one when it went down to Tennessee.
- 50:24264 gas pumps and 90, 95 percent of them, they had a car at it, you know,
- 50:29they had a massive store and you went in there and the parking lot was full people
- 50:33just going in there to shop and whatnot.
- 50:35Cause that's basically what you're going to have to have to be able
- 50:39to service when you have this many electric vehicles, because they're
- 50:42going to be sitting there so long.
- 50:43You're going to have to have charging station, whatever, in the hundreds.
- 50:48And then you're going to have to have something for people to
- 50:50do while they're sitting there for an hour, hour and a half.
- 50:53The restaurant, shopping, whatever, putt putt, I don't know.
- 50:56The American tradition.
- 50:57And just like Bucky's, you need to be able to advertise that you have the
- 51:00cleanest bathrooms at any gas stations.
- 51:03Exactly.
- 51:04You got to have that.
- 51:06It's the American way.
- 51:07It'll be interesting to see how that comes about too.
- 51:10Do you keep it and make these things like a traditional gas station, or do you
- 51:15take it a completely different route in regards to how it's presented and marketed
- 51:20and branded out there to the consumer?
- 51:22We have to switch to Lower Saxony and talk about our friends at BMW and Mercedes.
- 51:27I have to tip my hat to one of our dearly departed.
- 51:31One of our writers that's no longer with us.
- 51:33He wrote a piece a couple of years ago called The Demise of the M Badge.
- 51:37And everybody looked at him and said, What are you, an old
- 51:40man screaming at the clouds?
- 51:41What are you talking about, the proliferation of the M Badge?
- 51:44And the watering down and the badge engineering.
- 51:47I mean, he would get on his soap box and talk about this.
- 51:49BMW is at it again, making all the right moves because they
- 51:53put an end badge on anything.
- 51:54And there's probably an I3M out there if you paid for the extra
- 51:58sticker to be put on the car.
- 51:59But now what they're saying is if you want a true.
- 52:02M package, you got to get the competition badge again.
- 52:06It's just more watered down badge engineering.
- 52:10Yay.
- 52:10BMW.
- 52:11Everything's going to be an M or a competition at the end of the day.
- 52:15Yeah.
- 52:16I was having this conversation with someone a few weeks back.
- 52:19About that.
- 52:20They made the comment.
- 52:21Oh, it's an M card.
- 52:22It's that I said, I'm sorry to burst your bubble Yeah, no, it's just a package
- 52:27you can buy and they'll slap that M sticker on there for 2, 800 as part of
- 52:32this package There's a huge difference between the M 240i And the M2, so
- 52:39I'm just going to leave that in right there, but much to your point, William.
- 52:44Another thing that came across my desk and I thought was really interesting.
- 52:47I've made the joke in the past that no one aspires to own a rental car.
- 52:51Well, guess what?
- 52:52There's a few Mercedes dealerships out there saying that owners.
- 52:56Are not interested and do not aspire to own the EQS that traditional
- 53:01Mercedes luxury car owner is not interested in the all electric Mercedes.
- 53:08They are saying that nobody wants the EQS, but they're not saying that nobody
- 53:13doesn't want an electric Mercedes.
- 53:16The EQS is $130,000 electric sedan, but I think people are buying the half that
- 53:22price, $60,000 EQB, which is an SUV.
- 53:27That's a fair point because SUVs do sell better than sedans.
- 53:30Now, I rode in the eq.
- 53:32E is the crossover, right?
- 53:34The EQE, basically the electric A class.
- 53:36And I wrote in that in Denmark and I've said it before, if you had blindfolded
- 53:40me and threw me in the trunk, because Mercedes are so smooth and so quiet, even
- 53:44the gas powered ones, if they're not an AMG, I couldn't tell you the difference.
- 53:48I would say some of the interior componentry was a little maybe
- 53:52cheaper, but I don't know.
- 53:53What it's like in a standard a class to compare it to, to say maybe
- 53:56they're just on par and the only difference is the drive train in terms
- 53:59of looks, the car was really good looking, all those kinds of things.
- 54:02I'm not a fan of the styling of the EQS.
- 54:05So maybe that's a drawback, especially in my demographic or in William's
- 54:08demographic, kind of looking at thing going, it doesn't look like the S class.
- 54:11It doesn't have that level of sophistication and you put it next to a
- 54:15Lexus or an Acura or one of the big BMWs.
- 54:18You're sort of like, it doesn't really do it for me.
- 54:20To your point, Tanya, the trend has moved to SUVs, so maybe Mercedes
- 54:25is wasting their time building the EQS and they should devote more
- 54:28time to making the EQB better.
- 54:31According to Mercedes though, I had bought an EQS.
- 54:33I did a test drive, God, it was in the summer or whatnot.
- 54:36Do they have that thing you show up?
- 54:37Four weeks ago, I get a phone call and I didn't answer cause
- 54:40I didn't recognize the number.
- 54:41It says, Oh, Mr.
- 54:42Ross.
- 54:42Hey, I just congratulate you on your new purchase of your EQS and, you know, want
- 54:46you to download the app, your concierge, you know, this So I just like, whatever.
- 54:51And then they call back again, like, I did not buy an EQS and they're
- 54:55like, Oh, well, they must've just marked it down wrong on the computer.
- 54:58I'm like, I sure as hope that's the issue.
- 55:00Cause I don't want someone else out there to use my name.
- 55:03I went and bought 140, 000 car.
- 55:06Geez.
- 55:06Are you trying to skew your sales numbers this way?
- 55:09Trying to say, Oh, wait, we sold him a car.
- 55:12Well, now we've got to switch gears and talk about.
- 55:15Stellantis.
- 55:16A little bit more.
- 55:17The rest of the Stellantis family, not Ferrari.
- 55:20And there's been some news in the Jeep camp, a little bit of
- 55:22rattling of coffee mugs and whatnot out there in the great outdoors.
- 55:27They're also following the Volkswagen trend and dropping the prices of their
- 55:31vehicles, but not necessarily the ones that everybody's clamoring after.
- 55:35They made an announcement that they're dropping the price of the
- 55:37Gladiator to the tune of 20, 000.
- 55:40But on the same hand, the Jeep Wrangler is coming in at 59, 995 as the base MSRP,
- 55:47which is pricing out the people that would generally go buy a new Wrangler.
- 55:52So there's this weird imbalance in the Jeep world right now.
- 55:56And it's like, what are they doing?
- 55:59You know, that used to be, you know, 20, 25 grand, you got a decent
- 56:02Jeep, but Hey, built like a brick, you know, what beat the heck out.
- 56:05But now it's obscene, but I didn't do anything gearing it
- 56:08and selling it to their consumer.
- 56:10Like it's like, how many people can afford a 70, 000 Jeep.
- 56:15It's just crazy.
- 56:16And then.
- 56:17Is it really a Jeep then?
- 56:18These people aren't going off road.
- 56:20These people aren't doing what that car is supposed to be meant to do.
- 56:22And now it's biting them in the ass.
- 56:24Cause now they got to start discounting stuff to move them off the lot.
- 56:27It'll interestingly see.
- 56:27Cause when they do that, the next step is in, Hey, 0 percent financing.
- 56:31Hey, all this stuff.
- 56:32And I understand, you know, inflation has jumped things dramatically, especially
- 56:36from COVID and whatnot, but you rewind the clock 10 years and 70, 000.
- 56:42In the Jeep catalog, got you a grand Cherokee.
- 56:45Yep, loaded.
- 56:46Yes, exactly.
- 56:48Now you can barely get into a Wrangler, let alone some of the Wrangler
- 56:53packages that they're out there.
- 56:54And so I'm kind of looking at this going, is this Stellantis, Fiat, Chrysler trying
- 56:59to upmarket the Jeep to say, we want to come off as big and badder and more
- 57:04luxurious than Ford because of the Bronco?
- 57:06Because the way I look at it from a sales perspective is
- 57:08lower the price of the Wrangler.
- 57:10So you stop.
- 57:11People from buying Broncos.
- 57:13Yeah.
- 57:13The Wrangler is already good.
- 57:14It's been proven it's gotten better.
- 57:16Fiat did a great job of making those Wranglers a better place to be in,
- 57:20especially from an interior perspective.
- 57:21I mean, across the board, they made stuff better.
- 57:24If you're worried about Ford, raising the price is not the answer.
- 57:28No, no, it isn't.
- 57:30They're losing their focus in regards to who that vehicle's built for.
- 57:35When you go after.
- 57:36They're more focusing on, okay, we're competing against Ford
- 57:39instead of, okay, we're selling and building a car for this person.
- 57:43They're not doing it for the customer, they're doing it to compete.
- 57:44And it's like, you're losing your focus in regards to what these things
- 57:47are for and who your target is.
- 57:49Well, we're going to continue our conversation about domestic vehicles
- 57:53sponsored by AmericanMuscle.
- 57:54com, your source for OEM performance and replacement parts for your
- 57:57Mopar, Chevy, or Ford vehicle.
- 58:00SEMA is happening right now through November.
- 58:04There's a lot of stuff going on.
- 58:06Brad, Tanya, and I joked about the possibility with respect to, you know,
- 58:11color changing cars and what if they did this and what if they did that?
- 58:15And then comes along, that'll be the part of another Florida
- 58:18Man story here in the future.
- 58:19A digitized license plate?
- 58:22Okay, I'm going to ask you very matter of factly, why?
- 58:25Yeah, why?
- 58:26That's, I mean, why?
- 58:28And that's asked, why would you want one?
- 58:30I've been trying to find the answer to that in the article,
- 58:35and I don't see a good answer.
- 58:39The biggest reason is most likely aesthetics.
- 58:42Really?
- 58:43Why do I care?
- 58:44But also, am I really willing to pay like 700 for this plate plus a
- 58:50yearly subscription fee to have it?
- 58:53My metal plate's not costing me anything.
- 58:56What happens when that digital plate shorts out and a couple of digits
- 59:00are missing and you get pulled over?
- 59:03You get a waiver for that, right?
- 59:04And you got to take it to an electrical engineer.
- 59:06Can someone hack into it?
- 59:07Like, how is that working?
- 59:08Is it like Bluetooth, Wi Fi?
- 59:10Although, the benefit of that would be like, your car gets stolen
- 59:14and you change it to say, Stolen!
- 59:17Until somebody rips the tag off, but you know.
- 59:19Help me!
- 59:21Anybody remember the transporter movie?
- 59:23The first one, he goes into the locker and he's got this revolving
- 59:26thing, metal license plates.
- 59:27What did it take?
- 59:28Two screws.
- 59:28Change the license plate.
- 59:30Good to go.
- 59:31Yes, I know.
- 59:32I know.
- 59:32I know you can rip it off with your hand, but here's the thing from an
- 59:35aesthetics perspective, this falls right in line with the completely LED.
- 59:41Programmable dashboards, like we've seen in the Mustang, like we've seen
- 59:45in the Volkswagens and some of the other cars where they're like, you
- 59:48want it to look like a 1938 Beetle?
- 59:50You can have the stereo look like that, or you can have the dash look like that.
- 59:53But if it's e ink screen, isn't it just going to look like a Kindle?
- 59:59But for the pictures, it looked like it was actually color.
- 1:00:02It was black and white in the picture.
- 1:00:05It's a Texas mode.
- 1:00:08But think about this.
- 1:00:09You could use this digital plate to bring back retro plates that don't
- 1:00:13exist anymore, like the old Maryland plate or the old Delaware plates
- 1:00:18or the old California plates or even some of the specialty plates.
- 1:00:21Granted, if you're going to be able to change it like a watch face,
- 1:00:23you know, from your Apple iPhone.
- 1:00:26They're not going to do that, or how can they do that, right?
- 1:00:28Is that still going to be subscription based?
- 1:00:31Because the whole point of those specialty tags was, allegedly, the
- 1:00:34funds that you're paying a year.
- 1:00:35Because if you get those tags today as a metal plate, you
- 1:00:38have to pay for them yearly.
- 1:00:40But that money is supposed to, I don't know what proportion of it, is
- 1:00:43supposed to go to whatever the fund is.
- 1:00:44So like, save the bay plates.
- 1:00:46Your money is going to go.
- 1:00:48To save the bay, allegedly agriculture tags.
- 1:00:52Those are, I think, supposed to go to whatever agriculture
- 1:00:55industry is taking those funds.
- 1:00:57I don't know.
- 1:00:57So how do you do that?
- 1:00:59If you're able to switch your, it makes, it almost makes that obsolete.
- 1:01:03It does, but also super easy for you to change the style of your plate.
- 1:01:07Because this is what we need.
- 1:01:08We need some twit.
- 1:01:10In their basement to make a dick butt license plate and then have that.
- 1:01:16But we know a few people that would actually put those on their car.
- 1:01:20So there's an ask for every seat.
- 1:01:24Daddy, what's that?
- 1:01:26Yeah.
- 1:01:28It ends poorly for everybody.
- 1:01:30There's another piece of American muscle here that we have to talk about.
- 1:01:34And I felt that this was so appropriate from a previous, what
- 1:01:37should I buy episode that William was on as a former Fiero owner.
- 1:01:42What do you think of this Tesla swapped Fiera that came up for sale?
- 1:01:45Awesome.
- 1:01:46I mean, I'd be more for the V8 one that was just on bring a trailer.
- 1:01:50I saw and whatnot.
- 1:01:51Why not?
- 1:01:52Of course, putting all that weight in that little car.
- 1:01:54I mean, hey, you can battery swap whatever, but I mean, just
- 1:01:57make it that much more fun to be.
- 1:01:58Anyone knows doesn't research.
- 1:02:00As they were refining that car when the last iteration that car, you know,
- 1:02:05obviously didn't have all this horsepower, but they got the chassis down everything.
- 1:02:09It was a great little car.
- 1:02:10They were ready to take that next step, but then they just axed it
- 1:02:13would have been awesome to see.
- 1:02:15Where that could have went in the second generation and what
- 1:02:19they could have done with it.
- 1:02:20They were onto something with that car.
- 1:02:22The two Fieros that we have up for sale, the yellow V8 and then the red EV.
- 1:02:27You know, you made mention of the weight that gets added with the EVs.
- 1:02:31And if I learned anything from watching Downey's Dream Cars, the work that
- 1:02:36like Rich Benoit and those guys at Electrified Garage are doing, even EV
- 1:02:39West that's been doing the Porsches and the Volkswagen's forever is the
- 1:02:43upside to the electric conversion.
- 1:02:45Is they can corner balance the car and hide the batteries in
- 1:02:48different places and weight shift.
- 1:02:50When you jam an LS2 in the back of a Fiero, you got a big honking piece
- 1:02:56of metal back there that you're not able to distribute the weight.
- 1:02:59It's still in the same place.
- 1:03:00Granted, the Fiero is mid engine.
- 1:03:02It's a lot in one spot versus the EV where.
- 1:03:05Yes, it's heavy, but you could disperse the weight and make that thing really
- 1:03:09a little go kart at the end of the day.
- 1:03:11Definitely.
- 1:03:12You know, that's, I guess to say, a nice engineering beauty of
- 1:03:15battery is like motor wise, too.
- 1:03:17I mean, they're small, whatnot.
- 1:03:18I mean, you can put it, it's in the wheel, axle, whatnot, you know, and to
- 1:03:22your point, you know, you're balancing out the weight to make everything,
- 1:03:25it's your, like, little go kart.
- 1:03:26You know, let's face it, you have that car is electric, you know, you
- 1:03:29don't need batteries where you want to think they have a 400 mile range
- 1:03:32that car, you can get a hundred miles.
- 1:03:34Hey, you're happy now making road trips in that car.
- 1:03:36You're just going out for some fun for a few hours here and there and come
- 1:03:39back home or go into a car show with it.
- 1:03:41You're going to the Fiero club meeting to get made fun of.
- 1:03:44Cause you have exactly, you know, we're in all your Fiero gear.
- 1:03:47We're in that Chrome jackets.
- 1:03:48Let's be a row on the side of the arm.
- 1:03:50So you don't have to worry about having range anxiety.
- 1:03:52So, I mean, you don't have to load that thing down with a ton of battery.
- 1:03:55But that LS in there though, yeah, there's no way around it.
- 1:03:58You got 600 pounds, whatever it is, big hunk of metal sitting right behind you.
- 1:04:02It's mid engine, but still it's a lot of extra weight that you're putting
- 1:04:05in that car compared to what that four banger was in there, or even
- 1:04:08the six cylinder that was in there.
- 1:04:10So this next one had me scratching my head going, okay, it's still a thing.
- 1:04:15So apparently Chevy.
- 1:04:17Is still selling the tracks, which has to use your words, William, a
- 1:04:22provenance of the geo tracker and some other just, oh, amazing vehicles
- 1:04:29with it, which just awesome pedigree at all the geo tracker convertibles.
- 1:04:34That's the car for the Florida hairstylist.
- 1:04:36A hundred percent right.
- 1:04:37To compete with the Suzuki Samurai and the Azusi Rodeo and the ViaCross
- 1:04:41and all those, but they're still selling the tracks and I look at it.
- 1:04:45And.
- 1:04:45And maybe I don't recognize them on the road because they're hard to distinguish
- 1:04:49from some of the other CUVs that are out.
- 1:04:51It looks a lot like the new Blazer, but I thought the article title was funny
- 1:04:55because you don't have to dig too deep.
- 1:04:56And it's like the Chevy tracks outsold every Cadillac combined in Q3.
- 1:05:01And I'm like, what?
- 1:05:04I mean, this is automotive journalism at its finest.
- 1:05:06So that's all you really need to know.
- 1:05:08The Chevy Trax is still for sale and it's outselling Cadillacs.
- 1:05:11Pretty sure I had one as a rental once several years ago.
- 1:05:15How terrible was it?
- 1:05:16You know, it got me to point A to point B.
- 1:05:18That's it right there because it's at a price point, the person that A,
- 1:05:22they're not making a lot of money, but they own an SUV, four wheel drive,
- 1:05:27you know, America is all about the SUV and no one wants to feel left out.
- 1:05:30So, hey, how can I be part of the party?
- 1:05:33Hey, I can go buy a Chevy Trax for 25 grand and I'm in the party.
- 1:05:37It was a ski trip.
- 1:05:38It fit my skis in the back.
- 1:05:39So there you go.
- 1:05:41Last month, Danny Pilling was on from Danny P on cars,
- 1:05:44and we featured British cars.
- 1:05:46And then we, you know, talked about a lot of different things.
- 1:05:48And we landed upon this topic about Honda and Acura jailbreaking the new
- 1:05:54Integra and how they could unlock all this power and unleash the beast and
- 1:05:59how it was going to be quicker than the type are and all these kinds of things.
- 1:06:03And I'm like, okay, great.
- 1:06:04But this, this next car, I saw this and I said, Tanya, this is
- 1:06:09all you so that jail broke this 1.
- 1:06:12Oh, yeah.
- 1:06:12Oh, yeah.
- 1:06:13Okay.
- 1:06:13I'm on board our fans.
- 1:06:15They're anxious to know because this car is right up your alley.
- 1:06:18Apparently it's a GR yaris that has been jail broke.
- 1:06:23It's a 740 horsepower three cylinder, three cylinder, three cylinder.
- 1:06:29Wow, exactly.
- 1:06:30Wow.
- 1:06:31That's what I said when I read that I was like, that is unbelievable.
- 1:06:34Three cylinder turbo and the stock bottom end, bigger turbo cams
- 1:06:39and a sequential gearbox, dude.
- 1:06:41That thing is a rocket ship.
- 1:06:42They're quick to begin with.
- 1:06:43That'd be what?
- 1:06:4410, 15 minutes fun until the thing blows up.
- 1:06:47But I mean, Hey, you had a good time for 10, 15 minutes.
- 1:06:49Sometimes it's all you need.
- 1:06:54I'm sticking with that's what I always say.
- 1:06:56You don't need any more than that.
- 1:06:5910 740 horsepower in a motor that small.
- 1:07:03That's impressive.
- 1:07:04Yes, it is.
- 1:07:05That's super car power per volume.
- 1:07:07If you think about it, like that's up there.
- 1:07:09To your point, even standard, how that thing is, that's an awesome little car.
- 1:07:13It sucks they didn't bring the two door and everything they
- 1:07:16have over in Europe over here.
- 1:07:17It's gotta be the four door, but hey, it's still a lot of fun.
- 1:07:21And like we've said before, Toyota is hot right now.
- 1:07:24Like if you're gonna pick a Japanese brand, definitely look at Toyota and
- 1:07:28run her up to that as Hyundai with the N Series, because they're doing all
- 1:07:31sorts of cool stuff with the N Line, even though the Veloster is gone.
- 1:07:35I mean, you can get an N.
- 1:07:36Nero now and the, and the Elantra and they're like bargains and they're fast.
- 1:07:40And they're a lot of fun.
- 1:07:41I've been in some on track and I'm like, these are great cars.
- 1:07:44They've picked up where the Germans left off, especially Volkswagen's and 10
- 1:07:48year, a hundred thousand mile powertrain.
- 1:07:50I mean, all day long, you can't beat it.
- 1:07:52And, uh, what's his name?
- 1:07:54Bankel, Hork, Burke, whatever his name is.
- 1:07:57You know, the stylist, you know, they got.
- 1:07:58What they're coming up with is phenomenal.
- 1:08:00It's just great.
- 1:08:01As a fact is, is that it just keeps improving.
- 1:08:03You have a lot of instances where they hit a home run or they're doing great.
- 1:08:06Then all of a sudden they do something stupid.
- 1:08:08Like, cause they have all this momentum.
- 1:08:09So you think, Oh, we're going to go this completely different route.
- 1:08:11No, why would you do that?
- 1:08:13So, I mean, they're doing it right.
- 1:08:15They're coming out with great stuff.
- 1:08:16I mean, look what they're doing with the Genesis line to boot too.
- 1:08:19That's getting more and more accolades and just impressive in regards
- 1:08:24to what they're building there.
- 1:08:25So it's like, they're just going.
- 1:08:27Going like Toyota, hey Toyota, Lexus, or like that.
- 1:08:31So I mean, they're following that pattern, they're just doing a great job.
- 1:08:34And I think for the enthusiast market right now, if it has a GR,
- 1:08:38Gazoo Racing, or N Line badge on it, it is a license to print money.
- 1:08:43Oh yeah.
- 1:08:43All those cars are hot.
- 1:08:45Unfortunately, Honda is still trying to catch up.
- 1:08:47They're still hanging on this Type R, Type S.
- 1:08:49I don't know if the Civic's in a court or what, just, uh, whatever.
- 1:08:52I mean, I, I respect them all.
- 1:08:54I love being in them, especially coaching in these cars.
- 1:08:57Cause you get to learn a lot about them, but some of these legacy
- 1:09:00and hero cars, like the GTI and the Civic and others, they just,
- 1:09:04they don't do it for me anymore.
- 1:09:05And some of these newer cars like a Veloster and like the Yaris and the GR
- 1:09:10Corolla and whatnot, they are really.
- 1:09:12Peak in my interest are really, really good cars.
- 1:09:14Uh, well, it's unfortunate with the GTI stuff like this, again, it's becomes
- 1:09:18where the accountants are driving the engineering, what they're coming up
- 1:09:22because, Hey, we need to make this car more desirable across a broader range.
- 1:09:26So we need to do this and water it down or something like that.
- 1:09:28Instead of how it used to be a, here's our market.
- 1:09:31Here's who's we're going after build a car to that.
- 1:09:33And we know we're only going to sell X.
- 1:09:34Well, Count, no, we need to sell.
- 1:09:37Why?
- 1:09:37Because we need to make it justifiable, so we need to do this.
- 1:09:39It kills the car.
- 1:09:40It loses its soul for what it was when it originally came out, and what it targets.
- 1:09:45It's unfortunate.
- 1:09:46It's funny you mention the accountants running the ship,
- 1:09:48because over at Nissan...
- 1:09:50I'm really confused.
- 1:09:51It feels like a rudderless ship with no captain going around in circles.
- 1:09:55Their marketing has been a struggle for a while.
- 1:09:58Coming up with cars.
- 1:09:59Is the car out?
- 1:10:00Is it not?
- 1:10:01They're teasing us, you know, and then they do these shootouts with the
- 1:10:04new 400Z against, and it's not what everybody thought it was going to be.
- 1:10:07And then I just read that there's a Nismo version of the 400.
- 1:10:11I'm like, Have people even taken delivery of the base model yet?
- 1:10:15Now we're talking about a Nismo version that you can't get or you can't find.
- 1:10:19I mean, this is unbelievable.
- 1:10:21If you're going to come to the table with a proper sports car, something
- 1:10:25that's going to compete with the Supra.
- 1:10:28Which is already a GR badge car from the get go.
- 1:10:30You're going to come to the table to try and compete with, let's say, Porsche
- 1:10:33on the bottom end against the Cayman.
- 1:10:35You're going to come in and try to go against the Camaro, some of the
- 1:10:38other offerings that are out there.
- 1:10:40And you're going to build this dual tier system.
- 1:10:42I get that it works for Corvette.
- 1:10:44You can buy the Z51 and you can buy the Z06.
- 1:10:47Okay, great.
- 1:10:47They got two models.
- 1:10:48But Nissan, struggling the way it is.
- 1:10:51Should have come out the gate with the Nismo version from day one and
- 1:10:54said, we're here to crush the Supra.
- 1:10:57But instead they gave us a 928.
- 1:11:00It's like, yeah, what are we doing here, guys?
- 1:11:03I don't have a lot of hope or a lot of faith that I'm going to see a Nismo 400z
- 1:11:07on the road, because I have seen one regular base model 400z on the road so
- 1:11:12far, and I'm just like, I don't know guys.
- 1:11:15And it sucks because what Nissan can do is amazing.
- 1:11:18Yeah.
- 1:11:19You know what they're capable of.
- 1:11:20Again, it goes back who's steering the ship over there and who's dictating
- 1:11:24what you can and can't do because you're such a small niche manufacturer It is
- 1:11:29so what you need to do is you really need to focus and narrow in that market
- 1:11:33that target not try and cover all bases Not only we want to get it for the 20
- 1:11:38year old and three years But we also want to get it for the 50 year old guy.
- 1:11:41It's like come on stick to what you know I mean if I were king for a day,
- 1:11:44I would tell the parent company reneau Pack it up And just bring Alpine over
- 1:11:50and sell the cool stuff that everybody wants and let's just move on with it.
- 1:11:53Exactly.
- 1:11:54Uh, they would love to see that Alpine over here.
- 1:11:57God, that, uh...
- 1:11:58If I could buy an A110 right now, end of story.
- 1:12:01Take my money.
- 1:12:02Just take it.
- 1:12:03Exactly.
- 1:12:04But yeah, it would be nice if they could just bring that over.
- 1:12:07Why aren't you doing the Alpine with the 400?
- 1:12:09Come on, people!
- 1:12:10It's like, we can figure this out.
- 1:12:12Why can't you?
- 1:12:14You know what we need to figure out?
- 1:12:15We need to figure out new EVs and concept cars.
- 1:12:18So Tanya, take us through what's going on, what's changing in this
- 1:12:21new world order of automobiles.
- 1:12:23There is more news on solar SUVs.
- 1:12:26And there was a company that we reported on already a year or two ago.
- 1:12:31I think it was also a group of Dutch people that were creating
- 1:12:35the solar powered vehicle.
- 1:12:36Well, the Dutch are at it again.
- 1:12:38A group of students from the Eindhoven University of Technology, which is in
- 1:12:43the Netherlands, have developed a off road solar powered vehicle that they
- 1:12:48tested across the Moroccan desert on a 621 mile journey, at which point they
- 1:12:54never had to stop to recharge because it was charging itself on its solar panels.
- 1:12:59Estimated to get around 441 miles of range on a good sunny day
- 1:13:05and 50 less if it was cloudy.
- 1:13:07How fast were they going?
- 1:13:08So the car can only reach a top speed of 90 miles an hour.
- 1:13:13That's not bad.
- 1:13:14And actually weighs only 2, 600 pounds.
- 1:13:17That's even better.
- 1:13:18And they have this camper van kind of mindset with it.
- 1:13:22So the solar panels can actually pull them out and unfurl them, if you will.
- 1:13:27And they could be used sort of as an awning, and then you get
- 1:13:29extra like, Solar square inch capacity to absorb and charge with.
- 1:13:35So when you're taking a break, you can kind of unfold your
- 1:13:38panels, take some shade underneath them and charge up even more.
- 1:13:42I mean, that's a new way of thinking about being off grid.
- 1:13:46So I wonder if you were using it to live off grid, what's the residual charge?
- 1:13:51Like how long could you run off of the vehicle itself?
- 1:13:54Like if you were living out of it.
- 1:13:56Oh, if you were trying to like power small electronics or something like that?
- 1:13:59Yeah.
- 1:14:00I don't know.
- 1:14:00They didn't get into that.
- 1:14:01So I don't have those details, but that's an interesting question.
- 1:14:04Are we going to see this anytime soon?
- 1:14:06Probably not.
- 1:14:07Is it really cool that a group of students, you know, develop this
- 1:14:10vehicle that's able to actually cross the desert reliably?
- 1:14:14Apparently, that's pretty cool, and maybe this technology can
- 1:14:18trickle down somewhere, or maybe eventually we will see solar cars.
- 1:14:22Tesla promised us the solar roof.
- 1:14:24Let's not forget.
- 1:14:25Okay.
- 1:14:27So what else is going on in the world of EVs and concept cars?
- 1:14:30I don't know about this Jaguar.
- 1:14:33It's not really an EV, but it's the last combustion engine
- 1:14:37sports car allegedly from Jaguar.
- 1:14:39It kind of looks like, I don't know, every other Jaguar at this point.
- 1:14:42As we spoke about with Danny P, the JLR badge, because Jaguar is
- 1:14:46not going to be a thing anymore.
- 1:14:47It's Jaguar Land Rover altogether, just going to be known as JLR.
- 1:14:51You're right.
- 1:14:52It looks like every other F type.
- 1:14:55That's come out before it.
- 1:14:56It's nothing really to write home about, but I love how in the writing,
- 1:15:01in this marketing spin that they give it, the exclusive edition set to
- 1:15:05release pays homage to its 1960s racing.
- 1:15:09I was like, this doesn't look like an E type.
- 1:15:11What are you talking about?
- 1:15:13I mean, I get it.
- 1:15:14It has those familiar lines.
- 1:15:16It has that Jaguar shape, that baby Aston look that they've been
- 1:15:21playing off of for the last 15 years.
- 1:15:23Okay.
- 1:15:24I mean, if it's not.
- 1:15:25Coming to the table with a screaming V12, you know, like Aston did is
- 1:15:29their swan song where it's like, you remember Jeremy Clarkson, this
- 1:15:32is the last of the vanquishes.
- 1:15:34This is the end of the line and all this, you know, drama that they put around it.
- 1:15:38Want, want, want affordably priced, I guess, compared to some other
- 1:15:42cars of its stature at 165, 000.
- 1:15:44But for 165 grand, I hate to say, I'm going to go buy a convertible 911.
- 1:15:48Right.
- 1:15:48William.
- 1:15:49Exactly.
- 1:15:50If you're going to come out with your last true gasoline powered car, make
- 1:15:54that thing a balls to the wall, just...
- 1:15:56Monster.
- 1:15:57Yes.
- 1:15:58Take that thing to the nth degree in regards to performance,
- 1:16:01everything like that.
- 1:16:02Build a limited amount of them.
- 1:16:03But make that thing just so different.
- 1:16:06Everyone's clamoring to have one because they know, Hey, there's nothing
- 1:16:09else like it gonna come after it, and there was nothing like it before it.
- 1:16:13I'm a fan of the F Type.
- 1:16:14I like that car.
- 1:16:15They could do a lot with it.
- 1:16:16But yeah, that was just...
- 1:16:17What's the point?
- 1:16:18It's just another F Type, you know, with some badging on it and stuff.
- 1:16:22I just, I don't get it.
- 1:16:23A missed opportunity for them.
- 1:16:25They could have done something special with that car.
- 1:16:27They had the opportunity, not only with the coupe, but they have a convertible.
- 1:16:30Great thing with that.
- 1:16:30Hey, the all wheel drive, rear wheel drive.
- 1:16:33I mean, there's so many things they could have went with and
- 1:16:34just huge missed opportunity.
- 1:16:36The last bit of random EV news here, I guess, is that there's
- 1:16:40some reporting saying that the cost of EVs might be coming down soon.
- 1:16:44And that is due to lithium ion battery prices.
- 1:16:48declining over the last year and a half or so.
- 1:16:51Okay, I can believe that maybe the battery prices have come down and yes, in theory
- 1:16:59that should translate to less cost, but in practice, the manufacturer is just
- 1:17:06going to be like, yay, we have lower cost of goods, but we're going to charge
- 1:17:10the same amount and have higher margins.
- 1:17:13And they might throw a bone and lower it a little bit.
- 1:17:16There is precedent, right?
- 1:17:17Like.
- 1:17:17solar panels, however many years ago, nobody's ever going to
- 1:17:21afford solar panels on their house because the price are ridiculous.
- 1:17:24And it's like, yes, the price is ridiculous because the supply is low
- 1:17:27and there's adoption of the technology.
- 1:17:29And now we're seeing, you know, a decade later or whatever.
- 1:17:32Oh, suddenly they're much more affordable and the prices keep coming down.
- 1:17:35Is the same thing going to translate into the automotive world?
- 1:17:38Probably not.
- 1:17:39Are we seeing it translated into anything else these days?
- 1:17:42No.
- 1:17:43I don't know.
- 1:17:43I mean, look how expensive it is just to get the material it
- 1:17:46is now to make these batteries.
- 1:17:47It's a finite amount of stuff.
- 1:17:49I mean, it's going to get more and more expensive.
- 1:17:52There's still the raw material cost versus the production cost.
- 1:17:55Maybe the production cost is coming down, but your raw material costs
- 1:17:58are probably only going to go up if your supply is going down.
- 1:18:00Yep.
- 1:18:01There's an article that dovetails with the sentiment where they're talking
- 1:18:04about The cost of vehicles and we've been sort of hinting at it throughout
- 1:18:08this episode, where, you know, Audi's dropping the price, Jeep has to drop
- 1:18:12the price, but then the price, the Wrangler's up, you know, all these
- 1:18:14kinds of, there's all this crazy stuff.
- 1:18:15And we know the used car market has been insane for a number of years now, but
- 1:18:20reports are coming out that 80 percent of Americans can't afford new cars.
- 1:18:24And I read this.
- 1:18:25The other week in preparation for this episode.
- 1:18:27And I was on a recent drive in the DC metro area.
- 1:18:30And I started to notice like the age of the cars, I'm not seeing as
- 1:18:34many bright and shiny new things.
- 1:18:36You know, you'd always like, Oh, it's a new Tesla.
- 1:18:37It was kind of like in the old days, like in the eighties, you're like, Oh my God,
- 1:18:40that guy's got a Porsche, you know, it's like so rare compared to everything else.
- 1:18:43But I'm looking at the age of cars on the road and there's a lot of stuff.
- 1:18:47That's still 10 and 12 years old, which is like the new average for a lot of
- 1:18:50people are keeping their cars that long.
- 1:18:51I mean, I'm guilty of this myself.
- 1:18:53And I do look at the.
- 1:18:54Price of cars.
- 1:18:55And I go, I can't afford to buy a new car.
- 1:18:57I was having this discussion with a friend and it's like, man, what if the
- 1:19:01motor in your Jeep blows up, I'm going to get another motor, I'm going to
- 1:19:03replace it because it's cheaper than taking on a note for a 60, 000 Wrangler
- 1:19:09that I don't like, you know, especially now at seven, 8 percent interest.
- 1:19:13Exactly.
- 1:19:14That's only two.
- 1:19:15Call me.
- 1:19:15You're too good.
- 1:19:16I wasn't, Hey, 0%, 1%, Hey, all right.
- 1:19:19At least you're not getting killed on interest, but.
- 1:19:21I mean, you're at 8 percent interest rate now on that stuff too.
- 1:19:23It's like, it just will kill you.
- 1:19:25Yeah, but those mental gymnastics only work for people like yourself.
- 1:19:30Okay, the motor in your car blows up and you're just going to put a new motor in.
- 1:19:35You're going to put the new motor in.
- 1:19:38You're not going to go to the dealer who, or somebody else Going
- 1:19:41to charge you 20 grand to put a motor in or something ridiculous.
- 1:19:44Right.
- 1:19:44And then suddenly your mental gymnastics are going well.
- 1:19:47My car is X years old and now I'm spending this much, all these other things are
- 1:19:50still going to break blah, blah, blah.
- 1:19:51I don't want to deal with this headache and nightmare, but
- 1:19:53I'm going to buy a new car.
- 1:19:54And the other thing too, is just unbelievable is 84 months financing.
- 1:19:5992 months.
- 1:19:59Let's stress that sucker out.
- 1:20:01Eight, nine years.
- 1:20:02Like a mortgage.
- 1:20:03Yeah.
- 1:20:03You're upside down at five, six, seven years in the car.
- 1:20:06I mean, you're stuck with it.
- 1:20:08Or then you hear the average, Oh, we'll pay off your old car.
- 1:20:12Well, no, we're just rolling over all your negative equity into that thing.
- 1:20:15So not only are you paying for that, you're still paying for the old car.
- 1:20:18It's all, it's like, how do people get suckered into this?
- 1:20:21I just don't get it.
- 1:20:22I'll tell you a real life example.
- 1:20:24My wife sat down one time at a Volkswagen dealership.
- 1:20:26This was pre diesel gate.
- 1:20:28She had actually been in a car accident with her previous one, which
- 1:20:31is why we were buying a new car.
- 1:20:32Not her fault, but she sat down and she was doing numbers.
- 1:20:36She's scratching stuff out.
- 1:20:37And the guy's looking at it and the sales guy's looking at her.
- 1:20:39What are you doing?
- 1:20:39She's like, you know, your 0 percent financing thing is actually going to
- 1:20:42cost me more money over the long haul.
- 1:20:44Cause you're Front ending the cost of the car to make up the fact that you're
- 1:20:47not charging me interest and she's sitting there running all these numbers.
- 1:20:50She goes, and I'll take this plan right here.
- 1:20:53And even the finance here was like, nobody sits and runs the numbers like this.
- 1:20:57And I'm like, I just sat there and smiled and like.
- 1:21:00Yeah, you don't mess with her, but that's the kind of thing to Tanya's
- 1:21:03point that people need to do is sit down and maybe do the arithmetic and say,
- 1:21:07what is the total cost of ownership?
- 1:21:08What is this looking like?
- 1:21:09What is the negative equity?
- 1:21:11You know, some people are like, ah, whatever, you know, blah, blah,
- 1:21:13blah, you know, that kind of thing.
- 1:21:14But you got to nowadays because they're so freaking expensive when you're looking
- 1:21:18at Honda civic and you want to outfit it.
- 1:21:21More than just roll up windows and whatever.
- 1:21:24And it's 40, 000.
- 1:21:25It's like Honda Civic, 40 grit.
- 1:21:26What time warp are we in?
- 1:21:28This is insane.
- 1:21:30Mid level cars that are now 50, 60, 70, 000, which 10 years ago they were 25.
- 1:21:36It makes no sense.
- 1:21:37That's tough.
- 1:21:38And EVs have driven up the price and there's not a parity when you're
- 1:21:42buying an ICE car to an EV either.
- 1:21:43And I think the manufacturers have slowly just said, well, everything's
- 1:21:46going to be this new price.
- 1:21:48And to Tanya's point, if they figure out how to make it.
- 1:21:50Bigger battered cheaper.
- 1:21:52They're going to keep that margin and never goes down.
- 1:21:56It's it's just it's nuts No, they're living fat and happy.
- 1:21:59Yeah We'll never give that back and that's like the argument that's going on now like
- 1:22:03with you know, the strike going on with the Auto workers in that they're making
- 1:22:07all this money, but they were sharing some of it Yeah, they were getting a some nice
- 1:22:11bonus checks, but that ain't long term.
- 1:22:14They don't want to give that up They're making that argument.
- 1:22:16Well, if we did their turns whatnot, we'd be bankrupt blah blah blah
- 1:22:19It's like no, I don't think so.
- 1:22:20No, I don't think so either We're due for a market correction in a lot of
- 1:22:24different verticals, but I think in the car industry it'll probably happen
- 1:22:28quicker than some others because as soon as units Sit even longer than
- 1:22:34they've been sitting because people just can't and the market is saturated.
- 1:22:37And like we talked about last time, the adoption rate on EVs is plateaued.
- 1:22:41The manufacturers are going to have to move all these cars and they can't make
- 1:22:44excuses anymore because chips and all this kind of thing, because we're sort
- 1:22:47of on the other side of that tunnel now.
- 1:22:50And I don't know, something's got to give, and it can't be the consumer all
- 1:22:53the time, just giving over their hard earned money at the end of the day.
- 1:22:57We'll put a pin in that and probably talk about that at another point.
- 1:23:00But you know, the carbon wheels keep going round and round.
- 1:23:04And so, you know, we introduced a couple months back our world of wheels section
- 1:23:08here in the drive thru and we're looking for new articles, new technology,
- 1:23:11new things in the wheel industry.
- 1:23:12And I want to highlight.
- 1:23:14And events that our friends and sponsors over at ESC Carbon went to
- 1:23:17recently where they had AJ Campo, who is well known in the Audi community.
- 1:23:22ESC Carbon was there sponsoring the Audi Nationals and she was running
- 1:23:26around the mountains with a set of E2s on her RS3 looking pretty cool.
- 1:23:32Lots of really neat pictures and an article to go along
- 1:23:34with that on ESCCarbon.
- 1:23:35com.
- 1:23:35So if you want to check that out and follow AJ on her Instagram
- 1:23:39and check out the article on ESC.
- 1:23:41But more importantly than that, there is a group of automotive enthusiasts
- 1:23:45that have started 3D printing turbofan add ons for their wheels.
- 1:23:51And I tell you what, this might be the hottest new accessory
- 1:23:54in the wheel market right now.
- 1:23:55Is Try to make your ugly wheel look like something else, especially if
- 1:24:00you can bolt on something that looks like it came off of a race car.
- 1:24:02So I appreciate their enthusiasm, their ingenuity.
- 1:24:06I thought these were super cool.
- 1:24:07They come in different colors, obviously because the 3d printed material.
- 1:24:10But I like this idea.
- 1:24:12I like the idea of a basic wheel and let's dress it up a little bit.
- 1:24:14Let's make it look like something else.
- 1:24:16Maybe that could be made out of carbon.
- 1:24:17Maybe that could be made out of some other materials.
- 1:24:19So.
- 1:24:20I think this is interesting.
- 1:24:21I want to keep a finger on the pulse of where these types
- 1:24:24of accessories are going.
- 1:24:25Now, I'm not saying we need to bring back spinners, turbo fans.
- 1:24:28I'm okay with all that.
- 1:24:30I like to your point is cover up them ugly wheels, slap them on.
- 1:24:33And while the car stands, everything's right, man.
- 1:24:35Those things are cool on a car.
- 1:24:37Next step is you'll put your sponsor stickers on there.
- 1:24:39You got that all that nice space, all that real estate.
- 1:24:41Exactly.
- 1:24:42Yeah.
- 1:24:42You got all those things you can do with that.
- 1:24:44Or you can put a picture of your girlfriend on there
- 1:24:46and let it spin around.
- 1:24:47Well, in honor of Brad, we need to switch to his favorite section, which
- 1:24:51is lost and found, where he scours the internet looking for the newest
- 1:24:54old car available on dealership lots.
- 1:24:56I didn't spend the time, Brad.
- 1:24:58I'm sorry if you're listening to this, looking at cars.
- 1:25:00com or, but I did find something that you might be interested in.
- 1:25:04It's a wonderful cherry mint condition, 2008 Dodge Avenger.
- 1:25:10I see.
- 1:25:10Oh yeah.
- 1:25:12Right.
- 1:25:12Again, no one aspires to own a rental car except for whoever bid on this.
- 1:25:15It is super clean.
- 1:25:17I mean, I can't fault this car.
- 1:25:19I guess if you follow the letter of the law and bring a trailer, which
- 1:25:23the rules are, you have to take 957 pictures of the car and, you know,
- 1:25:28fill out all their forms and stuff.
- 1:25:29You can list just about anything on there.
- 1:25:31I didn't find this as particularly weird considering we found things
- 1:25:35like Geo Metro convertibles and other things for sale on Bring a Trailer.
- 1:25:38Good on whoever's been preserving this low mileage 2008 Dodge Avenger.
- 1:25:43Yeah.
- 1:25:43Good for them, but it's sad that cause they're owned by a corporate entity.
- 1:25:48BAT has gotten away from what they used to be and they used to be a lot more
- 1:25:51picky about what cars they'd put on there and gotta make that commission somehow.
- 1:25:55Right?
- 1:25:55Well, yeah, exactly.
- 1:25:56Because yeah, I, I could see, you know, back in the day them putting
- 1:26:00that car on there because Hey, cool.
- 1:26:02Hey, low mileage, whatnot, something unique.
- 1:26:04It's something quirky that, Hey, you wouldn't normally think it's going to have
- 1:26:06low mileage, but necessarily put on her.
- 1:26:08But.
- 1:26:08You know, some of the other stuff that just shows up on that site
- 1:26:11now is just like, why I know why, because they need the money.
- 1:26:15I don't know if you ever go through and look at their Sales figures that they post
- 1:26:19and how many they got to and I mean you start calculating now Just do an average
- 1:26:24payout in regards to what they're getting.
- 1:26:26They're making a crap load of money You can see why what's his name got a
- 1:26:29nice Fat check when he sold that to a cash cow because it's very simplistic.
- 1:26:34Well, you mentioned earlier when we were talking about the abandoned Testarossa
- 1:26:38facility that Europeans just love to throw a padlock on a building and walk away.
- 1:26:42Well, how about a Ford dealership in Germany that's
- 1:26:45been abandoned for 37 years?
- 1:26:47Yeah, I've got mentioned stuff because there's one that's in North Carolina
- 1:26:51that was a, um, it was an AMC.
- 1:26:54Same thing.
- 1:26:54You know, they just locked the door one day and walked away,
- 1:26:56left the cars in there, everything like that, and antique archeology.
- 1:26:59But the guys with the show, you know, they bought a couple, was it Thete
- 1:27:02Bank where it was sitting out back, you know, they dug it outta there.
- 1:27:04But there's a few of those hidden gems around the world.
- 1:27:09There's nothing special what the cars were left in there.
- 1:27:11But it's neat to see that time capsule and two, you know, we'll have the access
- 1:27:15and film it and share it with the world.
- 1:27:17Of course, the problem is, is once the cat's out of the bag.
- 1:27:20You got everybody under the sun going out there trying to check it out and see it.
- 1:27:24So then how much longer does it actually stay that way?
- 1:27:27It sat like that for 30 some years, but then it take one year for it to basically,
- 1:27:31well, okay, now we got to really close it up and get rid of everything.
- 1:27:34Cause it's just become a nuisance.
- 1:27:36If you look at the cars in.
- 1:27:38The dealership window, like they're nothing to write home about.
- 1:27:41It was a period in Ford Germany's history where everything was sort of blah.
- 1:27:46It's all like these super boring Ford Sierras, you know, just awful stuff.
- 1:27:51Like nothing fun.
- 1:27:52It's not like there's an Escort RS in there or a Qazi or something like that.
- 1:27:56It's just like, okay, whatever.
- 1:27:58But you kind of wonder after 37 years and it's been kept clean, is it still a
- 1:28:03dealership to your point, or is it now a museum where you can step back in time?
- 1:28:0737 years from where they put the padlock on the door and say, here it is.
- 1:28:11I mean, I kind of feel like they should just do like retro parties there and be
- 1:28:14like, let's travel back to the eighties.
- 1:28:16And here we are.
- 1:28:18I think there's an opportunity because I think, you know, Reddit was, you
- 1:28:21know, the husband died rather young.
- 1:28:23And so that's when they closed it up.
- 1:28:25And then the wife.
- 1:28:26Just kept paying the taxes, paying to keep it clean, everything like that.
- 1:28:30But then she died recently.
- 1:28:32Like that's when I went to, you know, start, let's say go with the shit.
- 1:28:34Cause they started going, cause no one's taking care of it.
- 1:28:37Yeah.
- 1:28:37I mean, that would be cool.
- 1:28:39Retro party.
- 1:28:39Why not have that 80s bash?
- 1:28:41I mean, I think you'd do pretty well with it.
- 1:28:43You know, it got the cars there.
- 1:28:44You don't need to have RSS queries like that.
- 1:28:47So they're cool.
- 1:28:47You got this 40 year old car that's got two miles on it.
- 1:28:50You know, it's nice and clean and just do something fun with it.
- 1:28:53Well, I think this next one is borderline Florida Man story and it
- 1:28:57should probably read Georgia Man.
- 1:29:00Right, Tanya?
- 1:29:01Carvana sells another stolen car.
- 1:29:03Here we go again.
- 1:29:05So somebody dials in their cell phone.
- 1:29:07I have a car to sell to you, Carvana.
- 1:29:10Come pick it up.
- 1:29:10Ram 1500.
- 1:29:12Never been in an accident.
- 1:29:14Gray color.
- 1:29:15Oh, we'll offer you this much for it.
- 1:29:17Cool.
- 1:29:17We'll stop by and pick it up.
- 1:29:19And in fact, that's not even your car.
- 1:29:20Brilliant.
- 1:29:21And this is not the first time this has happened.
- 1:29:23I was wondering about this, like how many stolen cars are going to
- 1:29:27end up on something like Carvana where it is like touchless.
- 1:29:32We have an article on our website.
- 1:29:33One of our members wrote about buying a car off Carvana from the giant car
- 1:29:37vending machine and how easy it was.
- 1:29:39And you know, they didn't need to go see anything or do anything.
- 1:29:42And then they just showed up.
- 1:29:43But imagine that.
- 1:29:44They showed up and that Ram 1500 belonged to somebody else, and the
- 1:29:48police show up right behind it.
- 1:29:50Those guys that were stealing the cars up in Detroit, off of the
- 1:29:53manufacturer's storage lots, and then they were taking 'em like to
- 1:29:57Arizona, way out west and selling 'em.
- 1:30:00Forging documents, what have you, the person thought they
- 1:30:02bought a legitimate car.
- 1:30:04And then a couple months later, knock at the door, we're taking that car.
- 1:30:07Cause it's still, then they're out that money.
- 1:30:09It's like, well, wait, how do I get my cap?
- 1:30:11Sorry.
- 1:30:11You're shit out of luck.
- 1:30:12It's like, well, wait a minute.
- 1:30:13I gave this dude 80 grand for this car.
- 1:30:16And what are you telling me?
- 1:30:17I can't, I mean, how's that right?
- 1:30:19They titled it, everything through the state.
- 1:30:21Should the state be at fault here because they didn't catch it.
- 1:30:24It's like, how is it my fault?
- 1:30:26You know, everything looked legit.
- 1:30:27The state didn't catch it.
- 1:30:28The government did not catch it where it's set up to supposedly
- 1:30:32catch this kind of stuff.
- 1:30:33Now I'm out that money.
- 1:30:34That guy's owed a car at the end of the day.
- 1:30:36That's what he is.
- 1:30:37I'd be delivered.
- 1:30:38And here's the other thing on a side notice.
- 1:30:40I don't care where the car's at and I'm buying something.
- 1:30:43I'm going to go look at the thing before I turn over my money.
- 1:30:45I'm gonna put my hands on a fucking thing.
- 1:30:47It's as sketchy as those.
- 1:30:48I hate to equate them to the Nigerian prince emails, you
- 1:30:51know, spam that we used to get.
- 1:30:53But you do get those like offers.
- 1:30:55And we had a guy sell a Porsche from someone that emailed him, I'm in Germany
- 1:30:59and I'm gonna arrange for the pickup.
- 1:31:00And I'm like, oh my God, you fell for that scam like you did it.
- 1:31:03And he goes, man, I went through the, I got paid, I got
- 1:31:05cash, the card disappeared.
- 1:31:07I'm like, wow.
- 1:31:08I mean, all I could say was just, wow, like you did it because
- 1:31:12those to me have always been super sketchy and super scammy.
- 1:31:16And I kind of view in a way that Carvana is the same thing because
- 1:31:20you're so disconnected from the process.
- 1:31:22Not that I enjoy going to a used car lot or going to a dealership
- 1:31:25and going through that rigmarole.
- 1:31:27So there's got to be a happy medium between the two, but to be
- 1:31:30totally disconnected like this.
- 1:31:32Yeah, but it's fraud on the part of the thieves, because they actually
- 1:31:35circumvented the VIN number.
- 1:31:36They had fake VIN number that they replaced on the car.
- 1:31:39So, you know, you have to supply the VIN number and the title that
- 1:31:42gets checked through the DMV system.
- 1:31:44If you provided fraudulent information that does match some Ram somewhere,
- 1:31:49who's catching that, even if you rolled up to the dealer, they're
- 1:31:52going to go, Oh, unless they're astute enough to go, let me cross check.
- 1:31:56Another place on the vehicle where the VIN is and then
- 1:31:59realize, oh, these don't match.
- 1:32:00There's something wrong here, right?
- 1:32:02That's why BMW puts a VIN on everything.
- 1:32:04Every panel on the car has a VIN number on it.
- 1:32:07Well, again, it boils down to just doing due diligence in regards to
- 1:32:12checking everything and just cannot taking someone's word for it.
- 1:32:15We would be remiss.
- 1:32:17If we didn't talk about Teslagate.
- 1:32:19Poor Tesla.
- 1:32:20I guess we'll start off with the long overdue drag racing video.
- 1:32:25Oh my god, again.
- 1:32:27Model S Plaid Edition, this time versus Bugatti Chiron.
- 1:32:31I keep asking the same.
- 1:32:33Thing every time these why, why does it matter?
- 1:32:36How do we care?
- 1:32:37I mean, it's apples and oranges in a way Apples and or it's apples and chainsaws.
- 1:32:42I mean, no It's like usain bolt race a horse.
- 1:32:46It's like who won.
- 1:32:47I don't know When's a tesla driver gonna come across a chiron
- 1:32:51to go drag race or vice versa?
- 1:32:52When's the guy driving chiron is gonna?
- 1:32:54Come across.
- 1:32:55Oh, hey, there's a Tesla, guys.
- 1:32:56Good job.
- 1:32:56I mean, who gives a shit?
- 1:32:57Not only that, the Chiron's got like 16 turbos and like all this stuff,
- 1:33:02so it's quick in its own right.
- 1:33:04It was.
- 1:33:05Yes, but in these stupid drag races, why don't we extend the drag race a little bit
- 1:33:10past, oh, I don't know, 100 miles an hour?
- 1:33:12We're something with a V10 or a V12 will just destroy no
- 1:33:16Tesla's doing 200 miles an hour.
- 1:33:19And it's funny.
- 1:33:19I literally had this almost what should I buy discussion the other
- 1:33:23night with a colleague at work.
- 1:33:24And he was like, man, I really love the Tesla's.
- 1:33:26I like that idea of like three seconds, zero to 60.
- 1:33:29And I asked him flat out, he's a younger guy.
- 1:33:31And I said, why do you care?
- 1:33:32Why do you need to go zero to 60 to go to the grocery store to go to work?
- 1:33:36He couldn't answer the question, but he's like, dude, but it's so cool.
- 1:33:38And I'm like, No, but it's not.
- 1:33:41Yeah, so you can be a jackass and forget that the person in front of you in their
- 1:33:45Toyota Corolla can't do 0 to 60 in three seconds than what you rear end them.
- 1:33:49You know, I've seen some wild stuff on the roads with people in
- 1:33:52Teslas and I'm like, I'm fearful because of the way they handle.
- 1:33:56And I'm not saying they handle poorly, but I've been in them on track.
- 1:33:59And they begin to show their weight very quickly.
- 1:34:02And you start to do some dodgy stuff with them.
- 1:34:04It's not a sports car.
- 1:34:06So that's the fallacy.
- 1:34:07It's so fast.
- 1:34:08It's like a Porsche.
- 1:34:09It's like a Corvette.
- 1:34:10And they do these drag races.
- 1:34:11And then people start to equate.
- 1:34:13Tesla's like a Corvette.
- 1:34:15And it's like, I got news for you, bro.
- 1:34:17Your Tesla is like a Corolla.
- 1:34:19It's not like a Corvette.
- 1:34:21Maybe a 1954 Corvette.
- 1:34:23Yeah, 100%, right?
- 1:34:24I mean.
- 1:34:26Whatever, there's a reason and a season for all of it, but let's not
- 1:34:29hang our hat on zero to sixty times.
- 1:34:31Like, these drag races are just dumb.
- 1:34:33And here's the thing, though, these Tesla people, you know, they're not our people.
- 1:34:38You know, it wasn't like they were, you know, had a Corvette or
- 1:34:40had something along those lines prior to getting that Tesla.
- 1:34:43You know, these were someone that, nerdy or whatnot, all of a sudden...
- 1:34:46They thought they got the coolest car in the world.
- 1:34:48Now, as I think they got the best car in the world just because
- 1:34:50it's, oh, it's a Tesla, you know?
- 1:34:52Oh, it's fast.
- 1:34:52Yeah, it's fast.
- 1:34:53But to your point, yeah, it's not a Corvette.
- 1:34:55It doesn't handle this thing.
- 1:34:57And they don't have a reference for it because they've never actually
- 1:35:00had or owned an actual sports car.
- 1:35:03Funny you say that because I have met a lot of Tesla owners whose previous
- 1:35:06vehicle was some sort of mid level.
- 1:35:10Luxury car like an E class or something like that.
- 1:35:14But they would always say it was cheaper to buy the Tesla because the
- 1:35:18maintenance on the Benz was killing them, compromise the luxury for the speed.
- 1:35:22And they were being green, big gas guzzling V8 and the
- 1:35:25Mercedes and stuff like that.
- 1:35:26And I'm like, okay.
- 1:35:27Makes sense.
- 1:35:27I get that.
- 1:35:28Like you justified that purchase and when you're comparing it to that or
- 1:35:32like the big Lexus or something, you want to get out of something like that.
- 1:35:35But I think you begin to miss those creature comforts.
- 1:35:37The more time you spend in those Ikea showrooms that they called
- 1:35:40like the Tesla interior, but there's a compromise there, right?
- 1:35:44It goes back to that conversation about the EQS.
- 1:35:46Is that what you really want at the end of the day?
- 1:35:48But then there's a price tag that comes with it.
- 1:35:50So how do you compromise again?
- 1:35:52You can rationalize it six ways from Sunday, but these performance
- 1:35:56shootouts just don't make sense.
- 1:35:58No, it's not real world as it boils down.
- 1:36:01It's just not real world.
- 1:36:02That's what sells the magazine or that what's gets the clicks and whatever.
- 1:36:06People want to see it, but it just really doesn't equate to the real world.
- 1:36:09In more exciting news, Brad, if you're listening, get
- 1:36:12ready your Cybertruck deposit.
- 1:36:14Is still years out from being transferred to, to anything.
- 1:36:22In fact, allegedly, apparently, the Cybertruck is finally
- 1:36:26coming at the end of November.
- 1:36:28However, it is unclear how much it will cost or how many vehicles will
- 1:36:32actually roll off the assembly line.
- 1:36:34But at least one will.
- 1:36:37So someone out there is going to get a Cybertruck in just...
- 1:36:42A little over a month, but then there's an article about one
- 1:36:45of these pre launch candidate.
- 1:36:48What did they call them?
- 1:36:48They had a special term for these like dozen or so that
- 1:36:51they put out there, right?
- 1:36:52Yeah.
- 1:36:54But there's an article showing yet another cyber truck fail broken down,
- 1:37:00spotted on the side of the road.
- 1:37:01Yeah.
- 1:37:02And broken down.
- 1:37:03It wasn't accepting charge at the charging stations.
- 1:37:05Isn't that an important fact of a electric vehicle?
- 1:37:10Yeah.
- 1:37:10You know, like.
- 1:37:11If you can't charge it,
- 1:37:15I've never been able to not pour gasoline in my gas tank because even
- 1:37:19a Brad story, you know, one time his gas flapper door got stuck on his GTI.
- 1:37:24He just put a fist in there and it popped open magically.
- 1:37:27So I'm saying you can always get the gas in the car.
- 1:37:31And you can always bring gas to the car, too, if you happen to run out.
- 1:37:35Yeah, how do you carry electrons?
- 1:37:37Like, is there a special container for that?
- 1:37:39Like, how does that work?
- 1:37:41The fairies come with electron dust and sprinkle it over the car.
- 1:37:46No, it's like that guy.
- 1:37:47What was that guy that drove with an e golf and he had a
- 1:37:52gas generator in the back?
- 1:37:53So it was between stations.
- 1:37:56He would charge you with like this little Honda.
- 1:37:59Unbelievable.
- 1:38:01You're kind of beating the purpose here of why you have a car.
- 1:38:05It's like, Oh, what was it on Shark Tank?
- 1:38:08They had it.
- 1:38:08The guys they pitched for stranded electric vehicle
- 1:38:11owners is they would go around.
- 1:38:13They're towing around an electric thing to charge it, but it's all it's
- 1:38:16gas generator, charging, electric, basically portable recharging station.
- 1:38:22To take to people it's like, wait a minute.
- 1:38:24You're pulling us through the gas car with the gas generator It's like same
- 1:38:28thing on downy's dream cars Like I wanted to run headfirst into a wall when
- 1:38:32they're talking about the new electric stripped down gmc colorado thing They're
- 1:38:36building and what are they towing behind it an industrial diesel generator?
- 1:38:41Guys, seriously, it's like, don't look back there.
- 1:38:45Just don't look back there.
- 1:38:46Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
- 1:38:49No, but circling back in a recent, I think it was like maybe part of an
- 1:38:53earnings call or something like Elon Musk is literally quoted saying that.
- 1:38:57They dug a grave for themselves with this truck.
- 1:39:00And it's like, okay, so it should have been here years ago already.
- 1:39:04Delay, delay, delay.
- 1:39:06Allegedly, November 30th.
- 1:39:08It's coming, but they can't tell you how much it's going to cost, other
- 1:39:10than it will cost more than what they were saying it was going to cost.
- 1:39:15Ugh.
- 1:39:15And they can't predict how many they can run off the production line because they
- 1:39:19have so many issues with like scale up and like building the thing that they don't
- 1:39:24think they're going to be cash positive on it for like another year and a half
- 1:39:28or two years or something like that.
- 1:39:29You're not even relevant anymore.
- 1:39:31When Lightning has come out, the Rivians have come out, whoever
- 1:39:35the heck is coming out next, Ram's gonna have theirs, whatever.
- 1:39:39It's like, does anyone even care anymore in another two years?
- 1:39:42And it's fugly.
- 1:39:43It's fugly.
- 1:39:44And yeah, it's like some things...
- 1:39:46Dude, that was a great concept quote car.
- 1:39:50It should have been left as one.
- 1:39:52Yeah.
- 1:39:52So is this one of those instances where you've told so many lies,
- 1:39:56you don't remember the lie that you told, so you just keep lying?
- 1:40:00Yeah, just keep building on it.
- 1:40:01He needed to fund everything, right?
- 1:40:03Because two million reservations at a hundred dollars each.
- 1:40:07So that was a nice 200 million dollar cash revenue that they
- 1:40:10could spend somewhere else.
- 1:40:11Are any Tesla's cash positive?
- 1:40:14You know, I mean, they tell you.
- 1:40:16Yes.
- 1:40:16I think that they have their best earning like every quarter.
- 1:40:19It's the most sale.
- 1:40:22That's because they're doing buy one, get one sales on the model three.
- 1:40:26Have you heard about this?
- 1:40:28This is insane.
- 1:40:29Like one minute, they keep changing the price.
- 1:40:312023 alone?
- 1:40:34And now they're talking about buy one, get one free.
- 1:40:37On a Tesla three, it's a referral program that if you referred someone
- 1:40:42and they bought it within like a two week window in September, then
- 1:40:46you were put into like a raffle.
- 1:40:48They were giving away a Tesla.
- 1:40:50See lies upon lies.
- 1:40:52And you know what?
- 1:40:53It looks like that poop emoji when it's all done and you
- 1:40:58curl up to the Wizard of Oz.
- 1:41:00Oh, it gets better though, right?
- 1:41:02Because now we got to talk about Elon.
- 1:41:06We already knew this was coming because this was brought up
- 1:41:08already months ago, both.
- 1:41:11The driving range claims that a lot of people were reporting that sticker
- 1:41:15ranges they aren't actually getting and they were putting in basically
- 1:41:19claims with the service center and they've created like apparently a
- 1:41:22department or a little organization to handle all these claims and basically
- 1:41:27they just cancel them all out.
- 1:41:30Don't even service the vehicles like the ones that do come in.
- 1:41:33They're like, Oh, no, the battery is fine.
- 1:41:35Go away.
- 1:41:35Like all is good.
- 1:41:36So it's like, well, what's the problem here then?
- 1:41:38Because if the battery is good and everything's running correctly,
- 1:41:40but I'm not getting the mileage you reported, your mileage is a lie
- 1:41:44that you said I should be getting.
- 1:41:45Right?
- 1:41:46So that's like false advertising.
- 1:41:48So now they're under scrutiny with just justice department to figure out if
- 1:41:52they have been, I guess, lying about or inflating their, um, Driving range
- 1:41:55claims, da da da, on top of the whole, Oh, I don't need to live in a house.
- 1:42:00I'm perfectly fine in a one bedroom shanty shack with an outhouse toilet.
- 1:42:04And then, lo and behold, there's money funneling into some like, glass
- 1:42:08mansion that he's building himself.
- 1:42:10Even though he doesn't need a house and he can just live off the land.
- 1:42:13And you scoff every time I say Teslagate.
- 1:42:16This takes Watergate, Dieselgate, Deflategate, all of it to a whole.
- 1:42:23I don't know.
- 1:42:24I don't even know why we're giving him more airtime than he deserves.
- 1:42:27Honestly, whatever.
- 1:42:31You can't not cover the Tesla news because it's probably the most exciting
- 1:42:35thing in the car world sometimes.
- 1:42:38I know Brad's not here to sink for us, but we do have a couple of things to
- 1:42:41talk about under lowered expectations.
- 1:42:44Lowered expectations.
- 1:42:50We have done some, what should I buy?
- 1:42:52Specials We have debated for quite a long time.
- 1:42:55The ugliest cars on the road.
- 1:42:57In typical listicle style, modern journalism, we gotta put
- 1:43:01another top 20 lists together.
- 1:43:03And this time it's the ugliest cars you can buy.
- 1:43:06Right now.
- 1:43:08And like half of them are BMWs.
- 1:43:09Thank you.
- 1:43:10Thank you.
- 1:43:11Thank you.
- 1:43:14That is not an exaggeration.
- 1:43:16Over 50 percent of the cars on this list are BMWs.
- 1:43:20I didn't count it, but it felt like it was.
- 1:43:22Oh yeah.
- 1:43:23If you look at them, I mean, the cyber trucks on this list,
- 1:43:26that's a given, but then they have things like the grand Wagoneer.
- 1:43:29And I mean, I'm not a huge fan of it, but I wouldn't call it ugly.
- 1:43:32And it's like every other car is a BMW.
- 1:43:35So good for calling them to carpet bid for calling it a task.
- 1:43:39We've been saying for quite a long time that the new BMWs are not good looking.
- 1:43:43They are not pretty.
- 1:43:44Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I am really, really nostalgic
- 1:43:50for the Bengal period at this point because those were hideous and they're
- 1:43:54starting to look really, really good.
- 1:43:55Yeah, . Well, this next one was too good for lost and found.
- 1:44:01It went straight to the barrel of lowered expectations, and this is the.
- 1:44:06Chrysler PT Cruiser Turbo.
- 1:44:10Oh, but this one goes unbelievably hard.
- 1:44:13Like it is so stanced.
- 1:44:15It's on Bentley wheels.
- 1:44:17It's electric blue.
- 1:44:19Nah, it's only stance if the wheels are bent in and they're not.
- 1:44:23It's got some stance.
- 1:44:24It's just lowered and I will say lowered is better.
- 1:44:28I don't think I, I, it's hard to get it out.
- 1:44:31I never thought I would utter these words ever, ever.
- 1:44:36This is the best looking BT Cruiser I've ever seen.
- 1:44:41I might actually drive this.
- 1:44:42I might not be caught dead in it.
- 1:44:46It's actually kind of cool.
- 1:44:48Why didn't they come this week to begin with like an SRT version with big wheels.
- 1:44:53And I even liked the roof rack.
- 1:44:56It's cool.
- 1:44:57How is this possible?
- 1:44:58I don't know that I could go that far, but with bigger wheels, lowered low profile
- 1:45:06tire, it does add a little something with a little bit of lipstick, if you will.
- 1:45:13It's got side skirts and I mean, it's got all sorts.
- 1:45:16It's got a Wang.
- 1:45:17They put a Wang on it.
- 1:45:21It's cool.
- 1:45:21The exhaust.
- 1:45:22I don't like the downturn tips.
- 1:45:23I've never liked that on any car, but I didn't.
- 1:45:26For some reason I look at it and I'm not instantly ready to vomit like
- 1:45:30I am the rest of the PT cruisers.
- 1:45:32Like there's, I'm drawn to it.
- 1:45:33I'm like, this car is cool.
- 1:45:35It's different.
- 1:45:36Oh, I'm not going to live that one down.
- 1:45:41You know, we're in preparation for our holiday episode.
- 1:45:45Like I said, Big Brother is always listening.
- 1:45:47We're having discussions around the writer's room.
- 1:45:49What should be in the holiday guide?
- 1:45:51What do you buy for your petrol head, your loved one in your life?
- 1:45:53Dire Gal, it's got all their toys.
- 1:45:55Well, this one from five years ago resurrected itself.
- 1:45:59What about the Honda Type R lawnmower?
- 1:46:02This could be a winner.
- 1:46:02This is a contender right here.
- 1:46:05Save yourself the heartburn and go to Honda, get some decal stickers and
- 1:46:09strap it onto your existing lawnmower.
- 1:46:12It sort of looks like a Roomba.
- 1:46:14I think it is.
- 1:46:14I think it's one of those electric autonomous lawnmower things.
- 1:46:18They have those, the robotic lawnmowers.
- 1:46:19I've seen them.
- 1:46:20They're basically a Roomba with a blade underneath them.
- 1:46:24So I'm glad we went there and this ties back into Tesla things that
- 1:46:27we've talked about in the past.
- 1:46:28I think I'm on to something.
- 1:46:30You know how the Teslas have an issue with the flashing lights and at night and
- 1:46:34you know, the autonomous self driving.
- 1:46:35I've been watching my robot vacuum cleaner and how it operates.
- 1:46:40And I thought to myself, if it shares the same software with a Tesla in any way in
- 1:46:44terms of its autonomy and how it drives around, it makes sense why the Teslas
- 1:46:49are attracted to the flashing lights.
- 1:46:51Cause it does some crazy stuff.
- 1:46:52I'm picturing you sitting in your living room, just studying your robotic
- 1:46:56vacuum cleaner, but the notepad.
- 1:47:01Oh, you, you joke.
- 1:47:02No, that is for real.
- 1:47:05That's how I can picture it.
- 1:47:06I can just see your head and your wife walking and go, what are you doing?
- 1:47:09I'm just watching the vacuum cleaner.
- 1:47:11That makes sense.
- 1:47:12It's a behavioral study, okay?
- 1:47:15But some of the things it does, I'm like, Huh, makes sense now.
- 1:47:18Yeah, I get it.
- 1:47:20I would buy that lawnmower.
- 1:47:21That thing looks cool.
- 1:47:23I mean, you'd be the talk of the neighborhood.
- 1:47:25I want the Porsche version of that.
- 1:47:26I want like the RS GT4.
- 1:47:29Only charcoal gray.
- 1:47:30No, you need the Momo.
- 1:47:31Oh yeah.
- 1:47:33Yeah.
- 1:47:34Bigger.
- 1:47:34Weighing.
- 1:47:34Fatter.
- 1:47:35You get the hippie nine 17 livery on that thing that look
- 1:47:38good going around your yard.
- 1:47:39Go.
- 1:47:39Yeah.
- 1:47:40Or the pink pig.
- 1:47:41The pink pig would work.
- 1:47:42Oh, that looked cool.
- 1:47:43Oh yeah.
- 1:47:45, that's what we buy for the holidays.
- 1:47:47Racing livery kits for our robotic vacuum.
- 1:47:50And autonomous lawnmowers, somebody make that, somebody start marketing that.
- 1:47:57Oh, that would be awesome.
- 1:47:58Meanwhile, I think Ikea is getting in the car business, right, Tanya?
- 1:48:03So there was an article that a Swedish company is making flat pack cars.
- 1:48:08What does that mean?
- 1:48:10However, it is not Ikea.
- 1:48:12Lies.
- 1:48:13Probably a subsidiary of Ikea.
- 1:48:15No.
- 1:48:15What I could gather is.
- 1:48:17The, yes, much like Ikea furniture that comes flat pack, the car is
- 1:48:22flat packed, I think maybe to reduce transportation costs or something to
- 1:48:26that effect, because it says that you still have to go to like an authorized
- 1:48:31service center to assemble the car.
- 1:48:33So it's not like, Oh, I got this flat pack car and I'm DIYing it in
- 1:48:36my basement or something like that.
- 1:48:38So I can only imagine it must be some effort to reduce transportation costs.
- 1:48:43In the 40s, I think it was Land Rover.
- 1:48:47Did that with the original, whatchamacallit, exported to
- 1:48:50different countries to get around taxation, regulation, whatever it is.
- 1:48:54They were flat, I mean, cause those things were just square pieces anyways.
- 1:48:57It wasn't anything crazy.
- 1:48:58They were basically almost a flat pack car.
- 1:49:01They would ship it out.
- 1:49:02It was Spain.
- 1:49:03I think South American stuff were very prevalent in this.
- 1:49:05Then they got assembled there and somehow it got around the taxation regulations
- 1:49:10away, how it would work, whatever.
- 1:49:11And I think they did it with many.
- 1:49:14I'm going to have a Brad moment with you.
- 1:49:15None of that matters.
- 1:49:17Okay.
- 1:49:18Let's boil this back for a second for everybody here and
- 1:49:23everybody listening at home.
- 1:49:25All of us at some point in our lives have put something together from Ikea.
- 1:49:30We all know how infuriating the instructions can be.
- 1:49:35And you imagine putting together a car.
- 1:49:37You aren't the one who has to follow those instructions because the
- 1:49:41certified Auto center is the one that has to follow those instructions.
- 1:49:45You're kidding me, right?
- 1:49:47I told you that.
- 1:49:47We're not listening when I spoke.
- 1:49:49It's not that you receive this flatback car on your doorstep
- 1:49:52like an Amazon delivery.
- 1:49:54It's that these arrive wherever and the mechanic shop are the
- 1:49:58ones that put them together.
- 1:49:59I want to put it together.
- 1:50:00That'd be the whole point.
- 1:50:01And it's not that I wasn't listening.
- 1:50:03I wanted you to say it again because I thought you were lying to me.
- 1:50:07Now you're telling me Joe Blow at Pep Boys making whatever an hour
- 1:50:12is putting together my Ikea car?
- 1:50:14Like, come on, man.
- 1:50:17Like, let's get real here.
- 1:50:19Guys making 50 an hour and just had an edible, I'll put it together.
- 1:50:24Does it make you feel better that they're not crash testing you?
- 1:50:27Okay, I'm out.
- 1:50:28That's even better.
- 1:50:30Oh geez, you can keep it.
- 1:50:33Oh, well, so since we're still thinking about the holidays, you
- 1:50:37know, maybe we'll flat pack ship some cars to people as a gift this year.
- 1:50:41We also have some rich people things to talk about.
- 1:50:44And William, I specifically pulled this one out for you, knowing the kind of cars
- 1:50:48you deal with, the people you deal with.
- 1:50:50And I want to know about these Bugatti.
- 1:50:52Sunglasses.
- 1:50:53I buy my sunglasses at Speedway.
- 1:50:56Ha ha ha ha ha!
- 1:50:57There you go.
- 1:50:58That's the American way.
- 1:50:59Bought my sunglasses at Buc ee's.
- 1:51:01Yeah, exactly.
- 1:51:02What you're telling me is, these Bugatti sunglasses are not on your Christmas list.
- 1:51:07God, no.
- 1:51:08Some of these things are tacky as hell.
- 1:51:09I mean, you gotta have just stupid money.
- 1:51:12Cause I mean, the cost, everything.
- 1:51:13I mean, I don't know.
- 1:51:14These have mother of pearl inlays.
- 1:51:1718 karat gold, black palladium accents, grade 5 titanium, carbon
- 1:51:23fiber, macassar ebony wood.
- 1:51:26Why wouldn't you want this for 2, 000?
- 1:51:29Yes.
- 1:51:30For you to accidentally sit on and break.
- 1:51:33Yeah.
- 1:51:34But when I'm in a foot race against the Tesla owner, do I beat them?
- 1:51:38Are they more aerodynamic?
- 1:51:40Are they wearing Tesla sunglasses?
- 1:51:42It doesn't matter.
- 1:51:43These things look like glasses that, you know, you're sitting down at a deli
- 1:51:47getting yourself a bowl of matzo soup.
- 1:51:50That or you're in like a lecture hall and your professor flips
- 1:51:53up as he came in from outside.
- 1:51:55I mean, they're just bizarre.
- 1:51:59Oh my God.
- 1:52:00People are buying and whatnot.
- 1:52:01And just imagine what the knockoffs will look like.
- 1:52:04Cause you know, those are coming right behind it.
- 1:52:05Someone's can change them just a little bit.
- 1:52:08So they don't get in trouble.
- 1:52:09God, those things look like the rounded corners on the Samsung, right?
- 1:52:14Oh, geez.
- 1:52:17Well, it's that time we go down south and talk about alligators and beer.
- 1:52:37You know, it's a light month this month.
- 1:52:39It was hard to find anything that was car adjacent or even mildly
- 1:52:43appropriate out of Florida.
- 1:52:45So it really wasn't a light month for Florida, but it's a light month
- 1:52:48for us on Florida news, but they never completely fail to deliver.
- 1:52:53As one gentleman recently delivered his car.
- 1:52:57Not only delivered, launched his Dodge Challenger into a canal.
- 1:53:01Yeah, he got some good air.
- 1:53:04The initial little graphic that's circling, little video clip at the
- 1:53:08beginning doesn't do it justice because there's the balcony that we're seeing this
- 1:53:12off of is some lady's security camera, bless her heart, captured the whole thing.
- 1:53:16And there's like three minutes of recording and you actually
- 1:53:19see what instigated this.
- 1:53:22Because in the background you see that Mercedes slowly creeping by.
- 1:53:26These two MFers were actually racing through the neighborhood.
- 1:53:30The Challenger didn't make the turn, the Mercedes did, and then really slowed
- 1:53:36down to watch the ensuing calamity.
- 1:53:38But dude didn't make the turn, went up on the curb, got airborne, basically
- 1:53:41shot off and down into the canal, and he's sitting there like floating.
- 1:53:45I don't know, he wouldn't get out of the car, I don't know why, and eventually
- 1:53:47he turned the windshield wipers on.
- 1:53:51And all these people are like coming out of the woodworks to like help.
- 1:53:55And then eventually one dude just finally jumps in to like drag him out of the car.
- 1:53:58Don't know why he wouldn't get out.
- 1:54:00And then like literally right as he does that, like the whole
- 1:54:02thing, like starts like going down.
- 1:54:04That was impressive how long it floated for.
- 1:54:06Surprising.
- 1:54:07Yeah.
- 1:54:08And what's hilarious about the race part, he didn't make the turn, but
- 1:54:12he's on the same Paleozoic era Mercedes chassis that the Mercedes is on.
- 1:54:16So you would think.
- 1:54:17They would be equally matched in that respect.
- 1:54:20But it does look like something straight out of Dukes of Hazzard.
- 1:54:23I mean, wow.
- 1:54:25Gotta love Florida.
- 1:54:27It's always good for something.
- 1:54:28I'll make a nice alligator home now in the canal.
- 1:54:30And how do you explain that one to your insurance company?
- 1:54:32I swerved to avoid an alligator and I ended up going from
- 1:54:35the curb and into the canal.
- 1:54:37Well at first I thought maybe he listened to last month about the guy in the
- 1:54:40Corolla that launched his car into the second floor of a Pennsylvania home.
- 1:54:43Maybe he was trying to re enact that.
- 1:54:46More than you can afford, pal.
- 1:54:48Geez, Louise.
- 1:54:49And now for some upcoming local news and events brought to us by CollectorCarGuide.
- 1:54:53net, the ultimate reference for car enthusiasts.
- 1:54:56The Simeone Foundation Museum in Philadelphia is celebrating
- 1:54:59their Spirit of Competition Award, honoring pro driver Scott Pruitt.
- 1:55:03Simeone will also be celebrating 40 years of ATCO Racing.
- 1:55:07It promises to be a drag on December 2nd through the 17th.
- 1:55:11There are still a few more runs of Tale of the Dragon going on this
- 1:55:14fall, sponsored by ESE Carbon Wheels.
- 1:55:16And the East Coast Indoor National returns to the Maryland State Fairgrounds
- 1:55:20on December 2nd and December 3rd.
- 1:55:23If you're interested in tons more events like these and all their details,
- 1:55:26go on over to collectorcardguide.
- 1:55:28net.
- 1:55:29That's right, and it's time for the HBDEJunkie.
- 1:55:31com Trackside Report.
- 1:55:33So what's coming up in the fall?
- 1:55:34Not a whole heck of a lot on the east coast, unless you live in the
- 1:55:37southeast, places like Rhode, Atlanta, or down in Texas, like Coda and
- 1:55:41other racetracks, or even California.
- 1:55:43There's still plenty of track events that you can attend, but as things
- 1:55:45are starting to shut down and get colder, and those of us that have
- 1:55:48completed our seasons are going into hibernation and repair mode, that's okay.
- 1:55:52But there are still some other events you can catch up on.
- 1:55:55Even out here, but an important notice for folks headed to summit point,
- 1:55:59especially for the annual turkey bowl.
- 1:56:01There's a reminder that route 340 heading through Harper's Ferry from
- 1:56:06points east of that in Maryland, Virginia, the road is closed and it
- 1:56:10closed down starting on September the 12th and will be continued to be closed
- 1:56:14through December the 11th due to some rock slide repair projects going on.
- 1:56:19You can learn more about that.
- 1:56:20And if they open the road early.
- 1:56:22at us340harpersferry.
- 1:56:24com.
- 1:56:25So if you are headed to summit point for the turkey bowl or some of the
- 1:56:27remaining SCCA events, remember to plan an alternate route before you head out there.
- 1:56:32In addition to that, HOD got a new feature on their website, something that you
- 1:56:36might be familiar with on other platforms like motorsport reg, they have this new
- 1:56:40thing called the show drivers feature.
- 1:56:43Many of the drivers asked and HOD responded.
- 1:56:46This new feature allows you to see who else is registered for
- 1:56:50the event that you're attending.
- 1:56:51So that way you can make sure that your buddy registered or you can
- 1:56:53guilt trip them into going with you to the next NJMP Watkins Glen
- 1:56:57VIR event on the HOD schedule.
- 1:57:00That is an opt in optional feature.
- 1:57:02You have to enable it during checkout, but if you do, other people can
- 1:57:06see if you're going to that event.
- 1:57:07So it's kind of a nice feature to know who's going to be there.
- 1:57:10In the meantime, we got news from the SCDA, the Sports Car Driving
- 1:57:14Association, based out of New England.
- 1:57:15They have released their fall schedule, which starts now and includes
- 1:57:19events all the way through December.
- 1:57:21It's a mix of high performance driver's clinics and half day HBDEs at Lime Rock
