- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. The Department of Health says it does
- 0:08Speaker 2: not track cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease and
- 0:12Speaker 2: is unable to comment on rates of the contagious illness
- 0:15Speaker 2: in the community. Richard Duggan reports.
- 0:18Speaker 3: The disease, known by the acronym HFM, is typically spread
- 0:22Speaker 3: through contact with saliva and mucus and often spreads easily
- 0:26Speaker 3: through child care centers. Symptoms include sores in the mouth
- 0:29Speaker 3: and throat, a skin rash that can eventually turn into
- 0:32Speaker 3: bumps or blisters on the hands, feet and buttocks, fever
- 0:36Speaker 3: and loss of appetite. VOCM News has heard of daycares
- 0:39Speaker 3: in the metro region with high numbers of children with
- 0:41Speaker 3: the disease. Government states HFM is not a notifiable disease,
- 0:46Speaker 3: meaning health care providers do not have to report it
- 0:48Speaker 3: when a case is confirmed. It says it's not unusual
- 0:51Speaker 3: to see outbreaks this time of year, with some years
- 0:54Speaker 3: being worse than others.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Vaccination clinics will be available across the province next week
- 0:59Speaker 2: for people age 75 and older who want to get
- 1:02Speaker 2: an RSV vaccine. Brian Medour has the details.
- 1:07Speaker 4: RSV is a respiratory virus that can have serious effects
- 1:10Speaker 4: on young children and older adults. The province recently expanded
- 1:15Speaker 4: the criteria for those eligible to receive a publicly funded
- 1:18Speaker 4: dose of the vaccine. That also includes newborns who will
- 1:22Speaker 4: be offered the vaccine before they leave the hospital. Vaccine
- 1:26Speaker 4: clinics will be offered next Tuesday through Sunday at various
- 1:29Speaker 4: locales province-wide. People who are homebound and unable to travel
- 1:34Speaker 4: can book a home visit. After next Sunday, vaccinations can
- 1:38Speaker 4: still be obtained through public health, pharmacies and family physicians.
- 1:43Speaker 2: The World Health Organization is in the process of collecting
- 1:46Speaker 2: information on the death of a lab worker in Russia
- 1:49Speaker 2: who worked in a high-risk anti-plague lab. The 28-year-old woman
- 1:53Speaker 2: died in hospital of what Russian officials have said is pneumonia.
- 1:57Speaker 2: The fear is that the woman may have contracted pneumonic plague,
- 2:01Speaker 2: which is spread through human-to-human contact. There are new media
- 2:04Speaker 2: reports indicating that a second worker has since been diagnosed
- 2:08Speaker 2: with pneumonia of unknown origin and dozens of people have
- 2:12Speaker 2: been quarantined. That has prompted worldwide concerns about spread of
- 2:16Speaker 2: the illness notorious for a series of devastating global outbreaks
- 2:20Speaker 2: through the medieval period. The director of epidemic and pandemic
- 2:23Speaker 2: management with the WHO, Dr. Maria Vankurkov, says they are
- 2:28Speaker 2: aware of the media reports surrounding a second case and
- 2:31Speaker 2: are trying to verify what they can.
- 2:33Speaker 1: What tests were done, the results of those laboratory tests,
- 2:36Speaker 1: the specifics around that, what further analysis is being done
- 2:40Speaker 1: if the cause is not yet known, what contacts were
- 2:44Speaker 1: put under quarantine or under follow-up, what did that involve
- 2:48Speaker 1: if the quarantine period is over, etc.
- 2:49Speaker 3: etc.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So We don't have a full picture yet, as the
- 2:52Speaker 1: DG has said. What we have been told is that
- 2:55Speaker 1: they had no case of plague registered in this area
- 2:59Speaker 1: and that no high-threat pathogens were detected.
- 3:01Speaker 2: She says they still don't know exactly how the lab worker,
- 3:04Speaker 2: who was highly trained and would have been vaccinated and
- 3:07Speaker 2: working under protective protocols, died. Premier Tony Wakeham has spoken
- 3:13Speaker 2: with Quebec Premier-elect Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon. Wakeham's office says they
- 3:17Speaker 2: spoke about advancing a sweeping new agreement to share energy
- 3:20Speaker 2: from the Churchill River in Labrador. The office says Saint-Pierre
- 3:24Speaker 2: Plamondon needs time to be brought up to speed on
- 3:27Speaker 2: the file. Saint-Pierre Plamondon and the Parti Quebecois won a
- 3:30Speaker 2: minority government in Quebec's provincial election.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Earlier this week.
- 3:35Speaker 2: The average asking price for a rental unit in this
- 3:38Speaker 2: country last month was $ 2, 034, down 4.2% compared with a
- 3:44Speaker 2: year ago. Here's Diana Mussina.
- 3:46Speaker 5: A monthly report from Rentals.ca and Urban Nation says the
- 3:50Speaker 5: figures mark two full years of annual declines, the longest
- 3:54Speaker 5: downturn the Canadian rental market has experienced in recent history.
- 3:59Speaker 5: Average asking rent prices are down 7.3% over the past
- 4:02Speaker 5: two years. Rents edged slightly lower on a monthly basis,
- 4:07Speaker 5: down by $ 1 compared with $ 2, 035 in August. That's a
- 4:12Speaker 5: second consecutive monthly decrease. Urban Nation President Sean Hildebrand says
- 4:17Speaker 5: supply has been the main driver of the correction in
- 4:20Speaker 5: the rental market. Diana Mussina, The Canadian Press.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Netflix has officially released its Newfoundland-based series Below. The show,
- 4:30Speaker 2: starring actor Josh Hartnett, tells the story of a fisherman
- 4:33Speaker 2: who is haunted by a mysterious force that claimed his
- 4:36Speaker 2: father's life. According to Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador, the show
- 4:41Speaker 2: is said to have sparked a major economic and tourism
- 4:44Speaker 2: boom for the province, including a billboard in Times Square
- 4:48Speaker 2: earlier this month. Watch parties for the series are growing
- 4:52Speaker 2: across the province, including at the Spirit of Newfoundland tonight
- 4:55Speaker 2: at 5.30. That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
