- 0:49Speaker 2: Uh with you here for the next couple of hours
- 0:51Speaker 2: talking Patriots. I feel like I haven't talked at all
- 0:55Speaker 2: about the San Francisco forty niners, which you know is
- 0:57Speaker 2: incredibly disappointing.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Well, no, because you don't have to talk about that
- 1:02Speaker 1: game from last week.
- 1:03Speaker 2: We still have to talk about the game from last week.
- 1:06Speaker 2: But I haven't really said one thing about Kyle Shanahan
- 1:12Speaker 2: and his forty nine ers, which you know, are basically
- 1:16Speaker 2: my second team at this point.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I honestly haven't said much about them this week either, which,
- 1:20Speaker 1: as you know, is a topic that I enjoy talking
- 1:23Speaker 1: about for different reasons.
- 1:24Speaker 2: So we'll get to that at some point today. But
- 1:25Speaker 2: we have some stuff to talk about from last week,
- 1:27Speaker 2: and we'll get to that as well. I know, it's
- 1:30Speaker 2: been a week. It's kind of weird to go all
- 1:32Speaker 2: the way back to last Thursday night, but it's our
- 1:34Speaker 2: first show since that game, and there's a lot to
- 1:36Speaker 2: talk about from that game and stuff that I've said
- 1:40Speaker 2: on on the X Machine that got me into, you know,
- 1:44Speaker 2: poked the beehive a little bit. But we'll talk about
- 1:46Speaker 2: all of it. But before we do, Hey, Patriots fans,
- 1:49Speaker 2: if you want to see Toyota's best offers, including those
- 1:51Speaker 2: not seen on TV, go to buy at toyota dot com.
- 1:54Speaker 2: It's Toyota's official website for deals from the official vehicle
- 1:57Speaker 2: of the New England Patriots, Toyota, Let's Go Play and
- 2:00Speaker 2: easy to Drink, Easy to Enjoy bud Light, the official
- 2:03Speaker 2: beer sponsor of the New England Patriots. All right, so
- 2:06Speaker 2: here's where I wanted to start. I don't I don't
- 2:09Speaker 2: want to make this two hours of me screaming into
- 2:11Speaker 2: a void to start Drake May. I don't want to
- 2:13Speaker 2: make it that. So I'm gonna try my best not
- 2:17Speaker 2: to make it that. I can't make any promises, but
- 2:20Speaker 2: I'm gonna try my best not to make it that.
- 2:22Speaker 2: The biggest thing that I look at with this Patriots
- 2:26Speaker 2: offense and with this Patriots team right now is a
- 2:30Speaker 2: general feeling of disappointment. I would say not in the
- 2:36Speaker 2: fact that they're not three and ohero in Super Bowl contenders.
- 2:40Speaker 2: We all are realistic about where they are right now,
- 2:44Speaker 2: but I look at where they are offensively, and my
- 2:48Speaker 2: frustrations with them offensively have morphed a little bit beyond
- 2:53Speaker 2: just blaming everything on the offensive line. The offensive line
- 2:57Speaker 2: is bad. We know the offensive line is an issue.
- 3:00Speaker 2: They are deficient personnel wise on the offensive line. Alex,
- 3:04Speaker 2: you and I have been out at practice the last
- 3:06Speaker 2: couple of days in the short time frame that they
- 3:08Speaker 2: allow us to watch practice, and it looks like Trey
- 3:11Speaker 2: Jacobs could be the left tackle this week for the
- 3:14Speaker 2: Patriots against San Francisco and Nick Bosa and the forty
- 3:17Speaker 2: nine ers. It's not a good situation. No period, full stop,
- 3:21Speaker 2: not a good situation. With that being said, coordinators quarterbacks
- 3:28Speaker 2: that coordinators and quarterbacks that are doing their jobs at
- 3:33Speaker 2: a high level can find ways to be productive offensively
- 3:39Speaker 2: around deficiencies. Whether it's a lack of weapons, it's a
- 3:43Speaker 2: lack of offensive line, it's a lack of you know,
- 3:45Speaker 2: there's injuries all over the place. And I'll give you
- 3:48Speaker 2: one example. I was watching a lot of the Rams
- 3:51Speaker 2: tape last week against the forty nine ers. Matthew Stafford
- 3:56Speaker 2: is throwing to two at well and Jordan Whittington, who
- 4:01Speaker 2: we both kind of liked in the draft.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so I see where you're going with it. Go ahead,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I see you're going with this.
- 4:05Speaker 2: And because he has an elite play caller and Sean
- 4:09Speaker 2: McVay one of the best in the game, and Matthew
- 4:12Speaker 2: Stafford is a very good quarterback, they were still able
- 4:15Speaker 2: to score twenty seven points and stun the forty nine
- 4:18Speaker 2: ers for all intents and purposes. So my point being,
- 4:21Speaker 2: and I want to unpack this as we do on
- 4:24Speaker 2: this show. It's not I don't want to be two
- 4:26Speaker 2: service level about it by any means. My point being
- 4:29Speaker 2: is is that I'm now at the point with this
- 4:32Speaker 2: whole thing that the quarterback and the offense and the
- 4:37Speaker 2: offensive coordinator Alex van Pelt, these two guys need to
- 4:41Speaker 2: come together and find a way to move the ball.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It's it's really that simple. And I'm not asking them
- 4:46Speaker 2: to be the seven Patriots, right, but you can't have
- 4:49Speaker 2: games like you had against the Jets last week where
- 4:51Speaker 2: you are melting down offensively. You have to be able
- 4:55Speaker 2: to find ways to move the football. I want to
- 4:58Speaker 2: let you chime in, and then I want to unpack
- 5:00Speaker 2: that even further.
- 5:01Speaker 1: So on the personnel thing, we're if I'm understanding you right,
- 5:06Speaker 1: basically saying, oh, they have all these injuries, they can't
- 5:09Speaker 1: do what they want to do offensively as a full excuse.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And it's not it's not even injuries like they weren't
- 5:15Speaker 2: gonna be good on the line no matter what.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Well Well, so that that's more my point to two
- 5:19Speaker 1: at Well and Jordan Whittington or NFL players, they're there,
- 5:22Speaker 1: may be are.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Too too, are too too at Well and Jordan Walling.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Sorry to cut you off, but are to two at
- 5:28Speaker 2: Well and Jordan and Whittington NFL players anymore than to
- 5:32Speaker 2: Mario Douglas and Jalen Polker NFL players.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Well, I'm saying compared to like Tray Jacobs and right.
- 5:40Speaker 2: But they're not playing the same position right like I
- 5:42Speaker 2: look at to two at well. Okay, So I misunderstood
- 5:44Speaker 2: your take.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I thought you were just saying that, you like, there
- 5:50Speaker 1: are teams that don't have their starters that are still
- 5:52Speaker 1: figuring out ways to do things offensively. I am in reference, Okay,
- 5:56Speaker 1: But I would say the problem isn't the Patriots receivers
- 5:59Speaker 1: at this point, at least not mainly. The problem is
- 6:01Speaker 1: the offensive line, and they don't have a two to
- 6:04Speaker 1: two at Well equivalent.
- 6:06Speaker 2: They don't.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I guess Cayden Wallace would be their Jordan Whittington equivalent,
- 6:09Speaker 1: but they're putting him out of a position. I would relate
- 6:11Speaker 1: it more to if the Rams are trying to play
- 6:13Speaker 1: Jordan Whittington, it's tight end or at running back. So
- 6:16Speaker 1: that a little bit. You know how I feel about
- 6:19Speaker 1: right to left I feel.
- 6:20Speaker 2: But the point being like.
- 6:23Speaker 1: This to me goes back to Elliott Wolf In the
- 6:25Speaker 1: off season. They were not prepared to go through a
- 6:28Speaker 1: full season in terms of the offensive lineman they had
- 6:30Speaker 1: on the roster. They were not prepared for full offensive season,
- 6:33Speaker 1: and how many times did I say this, It's not
- 6:35Speaker 1: just the bat the starters were concerned about. The depth
- 6:37Speaker 1: is as much, if not more, of a question because
- 6:39Speaker 1: guys are going to get hurt.
- 6:40Speaker 2: You don't root for it.
- 6:41Speaker 1: But it's incredibly unrealistic to expect the same starting five
- 6:44Speaker 1: linemen to all play seventeen games over the course of
- 6:47Speaker 1: the season. I think we both agree on that. So
- 6:49Speaker 1: to me, it's look, the coaching staff still need to
- 6:52Speaker 1: figure out a way to make it work.
- 6:53Speaker 2: That's their job.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I'm not saying you're wrong, but to me, it's more
- 6:56Speaker 1: of a reflection on Elliott Wolf in the front office that.
- 7:00Speaker 2: They're four weeks in.
- 7:01Speaker 1: It's not like the depth's been tested that much, and
- 7:03Speaker 1: already we're talking about a guy that was claimed off
- 7:06Speaker 1: waivers a month ago, who made his NFL debut last week,
- 7:09Speaker 1: maybe having to go up against one of the best
- 7:11Speaker 1: pass rushers in the league.
- 7:12Speaker 2: We're both right. We're both right because from a big
- 7:15Speaker 2: picture standpoint, you are one hundred percent right that this
- 7:18Speaker 2: is a personnel issue. My point is more so about
- 7:22Speaker 2: the fact that here you are, like the seasons, you're
- 7:26Speaker 2: in season at this point and we can go and
- 7:28Speaker 2: we can you know, we had a caller on pu Yeah,
- 7:30Speaker 2: we can revisit the draft, we can revisit how they
- 7:33Speaker 2: approach tackle in the offseason. We can talk and point
- 7:36Speaker 2: the finger at Elliott Wolf as you're totally justified to do.
- 7:39Speaker 2: But the point being is is that when I look
- 7:42Speaker 2: at it from an exus a nose perspective, now you're
- 7:46Speaker 2: in season, and as much as we're gonna excuse Alex
- 7:50Speaker 2: van Pelt that they're not going to average thirty points
- 7:52Speaker 2: a game, it needs to be better than it has.
- 7:54Speaker 2: It needs to be better than it has been.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And I'm not fully saying the coaches are off the hook,
- 7:58Speaker 1: like this is their job. Make it work what you have,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you know, I think some of it relates to, like
- 8:02Speaker 1: this conversation is being had with the Red Sox right
- 8:04Speaker 1: now in Alex Cora, what he has versus what he's
- 8:07Speaker 1: done with it. I just I do think the personnel,
- 8:10Speaker 1: especially on the offensive line, does put a ceiling on
- 8:13Speaker 1: what the expectations are. They can be better. There's what
- 8:15Speaker 1: they've been this year. They can certainly be better than
- 8:17Speaker 1: what they were Thursday night. That to me was coaching
- 8:20Speaker 1: that team was not ready to play against the New
- 8:22Speaker 1: York Jets. That to me is coaching. But to say, like, well,
- 8:25Speaker 1: the Rams are making it work and they have injuries,
- 8:28Speaker 1: it's a little bit different.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I don't feel it's that different. But we don't have
- 8:32Speaker 2: to get bogged down in the semantics of that. My
- 8:35Speaker 2: main point being is like, I hear what you're saying
- 8:39Speaker 2: about the personnel. I just we're in Week four of
- 8:42Speaker 2: the NFL season. Joe Thomas or whatever left tackle, Like
- 8:47Speaker 2: I know, I always go to Joe Thomas because he's
- 8:49Speaker 2: the pinnacle, but like the Trent Brown isn't even walking
- 8:52Speaker 2: through that door, right, So like at this point to
- 8:55Speaker 2: continue to harp on the personnel, to me is just yes,
- 8:58Speaker 2: we're right.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But where that's where you're gonna hear me say this
- 9:01Speaker 1: a lot today. The offensive line is not gonna get
- 9:04Speaker 1: not gonna be good this year because they don't have
- 9:06Speaker 1: the personal off the line, But that's sort of that's
- 9:08Speaker 1: not gonna change this year, but it can be better
- 9:12Speaker 1: than it's been. And that to me is where you
- 9:14Speaker 1: go to the coaching. It's not gonna be good, but
- 9:16Speaker 1: it can be better than it's been. And some of
- 9:17Speaker 1: that is personnel and some of that is scheme and
- 9:19Speaker 1: we can get in the different ways they can get there,
- 9:21Speaker 1: but it can be better. And now it's on the
- 9:24Speaker 1: coaching staff, especially as guys start getting healthy and it
- 9:27Speaker 1: looks like, you know, City So is back at practice
- 9:28Speaker 1: today and Kayden Wallace and Darian Lower out there. I
- 9:31Speaker 1: don't know how much they're participating, but they're out there
- 9:34Speaker 1: as guys get healthy. That to me is where it
- 9:36Speaker 1: becomes more about the coaching staff to maximize the group
- 9:39Speaker 1: you have, even.
- 9:39Speaker 2: If you can only be maximized so much. So I
- 9:43Speaker 2: want to talk about Van Pelt, and I want to
- 9:46Speaker 2: talk about to Kobe and the quarterback separately and bring
- 9:49Speaker 2: this all together. So with Van Pelt, my biggest gripes
- 9:55Speaker 2: right now with Van Pelt are number one. It it
- 10:00Speaker 2: feels to me right now based off of three games,
- 10:02Speaker 2: which I granted is not the biggest sample size, but
- 10:05Speaker 2: we're starting to get up there where three four games
- 10:07Speaker 2: is about what you would watch of an opponent to
- 10:10Speaker 2: get to know their tendencies and some of their base
- 10:13Speaker 2: concepts and like things like that, you know, what are
- 10:15Speaker 2: they trying to do offensively? The biggest thing that I
- 10:19Speaker 2: see with Van Pelt right now is that I believe
- 10:23Speaker 2: he's a good play designer. I don't believe he's a
- 10:26Speaker 2: good play caller. And those are two different skills. And
- 10:30Speaker 2: it's pretty understandable because as an offensive coordinator with the
- 10:35Speaker 2: Cleveland Browns, but the head coach is the play caller,
- 10:38Speaker 2: all you're really doing is cooking up stuff in the lab.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Right like that, you are probably gonna be predominantly designing plays.
- 10:45Speaker 2: That that's gonna be most of your job. They have
- 10:48Speaker 2: some cool play designs, you know, they have some cool
- 10:51Speaker 2: things going on in terms of their design of their offense.
- 10:55Speaker 2: The issue is is that there is a little bit
- 10:58Speaker 2: going on of whether or not it fits the personnel.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I do believe that that exists to Tad, But my
- 11:04Speaker 2: bigger concern about what they're doing offensively is that it's
- 11:08Speaker 2: getting Remember with the Patricia year, we talked about a
- 11:11Speaker 2: lot about the Madden offense, and he's just kind of
- 11:13Speaker 2: picking plays out of a hat. We're getting a little
- 11:15Speaker 2: bit into Madden offense territory with Alex van Pelt, where
- 11:20Speaker 2: it just feels like one play we're under center, one
- 11:23Speaker 2: play we're empty. Now we're in the gun. Now we're
- 11:26Speaker 2: in three by one now we're in two by two.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Now we are under center again, and none of it
- 11:32Speaker 2: really seems to be marrying up together. And my guess
- 11:36Speaker 2: is that he's probably just trying to throw s against
- 11:39Speaker 2: almost did it again, throw s against the wall and
- 11:41Speaker 2: see what sticks. Right, That could be an element of it,
- 11:44Speaker 2: because they just haven't been able to do anything particularly consistently.
- 11:48Speaker 2: But in general, you look at these teams that run
- 11:52Speaker 2: this type of offense that are a run first, run action,
- 11:56Speaker 2: play action off of it, West Coast third down team,
- 12:00Speaker 2: just like the Patriots. We're gonna see one on Sunday
- 12:02Speaker 2: that's gonna do it a lot better. Right in the
- 12:04Speaker 2: forty nine ers, they come into the game and they
- 12:08Speaker 2: have a plan of how they want to run the football.
- 12:10Speaker 2: They say, we're either gonna this week's an outside zone week,
- 12:13Speaker 2: this week's a gap week. That's how we're gonna run
- 12:16Speaker 2: the ball. Once we establish how we're gonna run the ball,
- 12:19Speaker 2: now let's put into the install our play action passes
- 12:23Speaker 2: off of that running game. And what I see with
- 12:26Speaker 2: Van Pelt is that you get into the game and
- 12:29Speaker 2: he's play actioning before he's setting it up. So you're
- 12:32Speaker 2: getting in and if we're gonna talk about him anyways.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I'll just talk about him with Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan has
- 12:41Speaker 2: usually a number of runs that he tries to get
- 12:44Speaker 2: to in a game. It is around thirty to thirty five.
- 12:47Speaker 1: As soon as he hits that number, he never runs
- 12:48Speaker 1: the ball.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Okay, we'll get there. He has thirty to thirty five
- 12:51Speaker 2: runs a game right that he tries to get to.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Then all of his play action passes are then married
- 12:57Speaker 2: off of that, so it's stretch runs, stretcher, stretch run,
- 13:01Speaker 2: boot stretcher run, Stretch run, stretch run, boot right, and
- 13:05Speaker 2: we sequence these things together with Van Pelt, it feels
- 13:10Speaker 2: like they are not building up to it in game
- 13:14Speaker 2: to be able to do that type of thing. The
- 13:16Speaker 2: other thing I would just say, and I thought he
- 13:19Speaker 2: mentioned it today, which I found interesting because it's like
- 13:22Speaker 2: he's communicating it in front of us and saying what
- 13:25Speaker 2: I want to hear him say. But I don't necessarily
- 13:28Speaker 2: think this presents itself. On Sunday, he's running all wide
- 13:34Speaker 2: zone play action concepts when sometimes they're not running wide
- 13:39Speaker 2: zone right. So like if you're if you're showing a
- 13:42Speaker 2: team duo or you're showing a team gap. You can't
- 13:45Speaker 2: then run gap, play gap, play gap, play bootleg like that.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Those things don't marry up together. If you're gonna run
- 13:53Speaker 2: gap or duo, which is just double teams on the inside,
- 13:56Speaker 2: move the line of scrimmage, and then you're gonna play
- 13:58Speaker 2: play action off of that, then you need to run
- 14:01Speaker 2: play action like the old Patriots used to run play
- 14:03Speaker 2: action right, like hit the second level of the defense,
- 14:06Speaker 2: crossing routes, you know, bang eights like things like that,
- 14:09Speaker 2: seam routes, like that's how you want to run those plays.
- 14:12Speaker 2: You want to get those linebackers up on those double
- 14:14Speaker 2: teams and throw it right past their ears, like that's
- 14:17Speaker 2: how you want to run it. You don't want to
- 14:20Speaker 2: duo duo duo, and then all of a sudden we're
- 14:22Speaker 2: running postcross down the field. That doesn't marry it doesn't
- 14:26Speaker 2: line up. So if Vanpeld install your runs makes and
- 14:31Speaker 2: install the pay action passes that marry off the runs,
- 14:34Speaker 2: it just seems to me right now, like it's a
- 14:36Speaker 2: Schmorgasbori of nothingness, Like it's all just a kind of
- 14:40Speaker 2: out there. The last thing I just want to say,
- 14:41Speaker 2: and then we can segue into Prisett because it connects
- 14:45Speaker 2: the Van Pelt offense. Yep, And I asked him about
- 14:49Speaker 2: this today. Teams they have a very high under center
- 14:53Speaker 2: rush rate on first down right now.
- 14:55Speaker 1: They have a pretty high under center rate in general.
- 14:57Speaker 2: So yeah, but it's first down rush. They're fifty percent
- 15:00Speaker 2: of the time they're running the ball from under center
- 15:02Speaker 2: on first down. It's one of the highest rates in
- 15:04Speaker 2: the league. When they when they're to have that tendency,
- 15:08Speaker 2: teams at this point are just blitzing. They're just setting
- 15:11Speaker 2: the house at the line of scrimmage because they're expecting
- 15:14Speaker 2: run or even play action off of that, and it
- 15:17Speaker 2: still works even if it is play action. So they're
- 15:19Speaker 2: just setting the house. They're blitzing. Guys. They have the
- 15:23Speaker 2: Patriots have to have the ability at the line of scrimmage, like,
- 15:26Speaker 2: what's our plan for handling this? It's it goes back
- 15:30Speaker 2: to something that Brady said, I thought was one of
- 15:32Speaker 2: the best pieces of commentary he's offered. Brady said that
- 15:37Speaker 2: a big part of his week was making sure that
- 15:42Speaker 2: they were snapping the ball into a defense that the
- 15:44Speaker 2: play was gonna work against. He never wanted to run
- 15:47Speaker 2: a bad play. Right now, the Patriots are running a
- 15:50Speaker 2: lot of bad plays where they get to the line
- 15:53Speaker 2: of scrimmage, they have a play call in the huddled. Well,
- 15:56Speaker 2: when the safety starts rolling down like he's gonna blitz
- 15:59Speaker 2: off the edge, you can't just snap the ball and
- 16:01Speaker 2: run that play action play into the teeth of the
- 16:03Speaker 2: defense because it's not gonna get off and that's exactly
- 16:06Speaker 2: what happens. It's not gonna work. So running the play
- 16:10Speaker 2: action in the run game together and then having a
- 16:12Speaker 2: plan of this is how we are going to handle
- 16:15Speaker 2: certain pressures and certain looks that the defense gives us.
- 16:19Speaker 2: That type of stuff goes a long way to helping
- 16:21Speaker 2: the offensive line. So when you have it, it's not
- 16:24Speaker 2: all just about let's just call bubble screens in quick
- 16:28Speaker 2: game to get the ball out of the quarterback's hands.
- 16:31Speaker 2: It's also about having a plan of how are we
- 16:34Speaker 2: going to block this when this is what they're sending
- 16:36Speaker 2: us right and right now. I don't feel like they
- 16:38Speaker 2: have much of a plan. I know, I'm with you,
- 16:41Speaker 2: and some of that may just be continuity.
- 16:43Speaker 1: It's hard to come up with a plan when they're
- 16:45Speaker 1: gonna have their fourth different starting offensive line in four games.
- 16:48Speaker 1: I would expect on Thursday and on Sunday afternoon. So yeah,
- 16:53Speaker 1: I'm with you on a lot of that. I just
- 16:55Speaker 1: the sequencing isn't necessarily there. The individual it's all very
- 16:59Speaker 1: individual play calling. And you go back to the start
- 17:01Speaker 1: of that Jets game where they come right out with
- 17:04Speaker 1: play action, the Jets don't respect it, and Van Pelt
- 17:07Speaker 1: comes out the next day and basically admits, yeah, we
- 17:09Speaker 1: we were running the ball well the last two games,
- 17:12Speaker 1: so we thought we'd hit him with play action, but
- 17:13Speaker 1: you haven't run it well against the Jets, right, he
- 17:15Speaker 1: needs to show that to the Jets that doesn't apply.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And maybe he's learning on the fly here, maybe he's
- 17:21Speaker 1: learning in real time and we'll see if he adjusts
- 17:23Speaker 1: this week. But yeah, some of the play calling has
- 17:26Speaker 1: definitely seemed out of place.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So the biggest thing to me is getting
- 17:32Speaker 2: that cleaned up. If you are gonna you're gonna have
- 17:36Speaker 2: some one on one losses on the offensive line because
- 17:38Speaker 2: you just don't have very good tackles, especially right now
- 17:42Speaker 2: and left tackle particular, So you're you're gonna have some
- 17:46Speaker 2: losses like Nick Bosa is gonna get home sometimes against
- 17:49Speaker 2: Trey Jacobs and Caden Wallace, wherever is out there. Your
- 17:52Speaker 2: first third down of the game against the Jets, they
- 17:55Speaker 2: have a free runner through the B gap, right, Like
- 17:56Speaker 2: those types of plays are avoidable, Like, that's not oh,
- 18:00Speaker 2: we have like a backup guard playing right now. So
- 18:03Speaker 2: he got beat by quinnin Williams. That's a avoidable mental error.
- 18:08Speaker 2: And if they can get to the point where they're
- 18:10Speaker 2: only errors, or if they are only breakdowns or just
- 18:13Speaker 2: physical breakdowns, then at least they're gonna have some semblance
- 18:16Speaker 2: of an offense at that point, right, So that that's
- 18:19Speaker 2: where I'm at with that with Perset. I'm getting to
- 18:23Speaker 2: the point with Persett where a lot of you know,
- 18:28Speaker 2: the narrative coming in or the conversation coming in with
- 18:31Speaker 2: Perset was that he was going to be a game
- 18:34Speaker 2: manager for the Patriots, net neutral quarterback, whatever you want
- 18:38Speaker 2: to call it. Game manager. He to me, is not
- 18:43Speaker 2: checking those boxes off right now, you can there's more
- 18:46Speaker 2: to being a game manager than just not turning the
- 18:48Speaker 2: ball over, Like that's the That's just one on the
- 18:53Speaker 2: list of what I would say are four items to
- 18:55Speaker 2: game manager.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Do you think they see it that way?
- 18:57Speaker 2: Doesn't sound like it, which is frustrating to me. A
- 19:01Speaker 2: little bit. It sounds to me like I'm with you.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I think that their chief concern first and foremost is
- 19:06Speaker 1: don't turn the ball over, and and I agree that
- 19:08Speaker 1: that's high on the list. It's just not the only
- 19:11Speaker 1: thing on the list. So to me, game managing is
- 19:14Speaker 1: there's four elements to it. Not turning the ball over
- 19:17Speaker 1: as one. Getting the team into the right play at
- 19:20Speaker 1: the line of scrimmages too. If you're not gonna win physically,
- 19:23Speaker 1: you have to win for me mentally, like you just
- 19:25Speaker 1: there's no way I can have those two things go
- 19:27Speaker 1: hand in hand. Number three, hit the layups in the offense.
- 19:32Speaker 1: When Austin Hooper is wide open off they finally block
- 19:37Speaker 1: up a play action play and get a receiver open
- 19:40Speaker 1: down the field on play action.
- 19:42Speaker 2: I need the quarterback to make that throw. He's got
- 19:45Speaker 2: to hit that throw. Make the layups presented to you
- 19:47Speaker 2: by the offense. The last thing is is that the timing.
- 19:51Speaker 2: To me, you have to be sharp in terms of
- 19:53Speaker 2: your timing within the framework of the offense. I'm not
- 19:56Speaker 2: asking you to go make plays. I'm not asking Jacob
- 19:59Speaker 2: Brissett to run around like he's Josh Allen and throw
- 20:02Speaker 2: off his back foot and make ridiculous throws all over
- 20:04Speaker 2: the field. I'm not asking him to do that, but
- 20:07Speaker 2: the ball's got to come out on time, it's got
- 20:09Speaker 2: to be in rhythm. We got to be able to
- 20:11Speaker 2: get the football where it needs to go. There's too
- 20:14Speaker 2: many instances on film. Well, first of all, the biggest
- 20:17Speaker 2: one to me is snapping the ball into bad defenses
- 20:20Speaker 2: like that. You get out there first play of the
- 20:23Speaker 2: game and you know Will McDonald's unblocked on the end
- 20:25Speaker 2: of the line of scrimmage and you snapped the ball anyways,
- 20:27Speaker 2: I just can't really understand the logic behind that. The
- 20:31Speaker 2: other thing though, in terms of the processing or the
- 20:35Speaker 2: timing post snap, that lends itself a lot to pressure too,
- 20:39Speaker 2: because now the quarterback's holding the ball in the pocket.
- 20:42Speaker 2: So when they had to play on third down in
- 20:45Speaker 2: the Jets game where they're running Hunter Henry on a
- 20:49Speaker 2: little y option type of route and they're just going
- 20:51Speaker 2: to clear it out for him, and he's just gonna
- 20:53Speaker 2: break off and find a soft spot or breakoff of
- 20:56Speaker 2: man coverage or whatever the case may be. And Brissett
- 21:00Speaker 2: open to that side of the field and he's staring
- 21:02Speaker 2: right at an open Hunter Henry at the sticks, but
- 21:05Speaker 2: he wants to see it open. He doesn't want to
- 21:07Speaker 2: throw it before Henry gets out of the break. He
- 21:10Speaker 2: wants to be one hundred percent confirmed this is open.
- 21:14Speaker 2: A lot of those throws into the sideline, whether it's
- 21:17Speaker 2: like a free axis hitch or slant or comeback or
- 21:20Speaker 2: something along those lines, is just a trust throw by
- 21:23Speaker 2: the quarterback. The receiver's going to break the right way,
- 21:26Speaker 2: the DB's off, the DB's giving the leverage away. I'm
- 21:29Speaker 2: just gonna throw this ball. Those are anticipatory throws. You
- 21:33Speaker 2: can't in the league. You can't just hold the ball
- 21:36Speaker 2: and then throw it when it's open, because then now
- 21:38Speaker 2: it's too late. Now the cornerback's breaking on the football,
- 21:41Speaker 2: So he doesn't throw the ball at a Hunter Henry.
- 21:44Speaker 2: He passes that open read up and then he comes
- 21:47Speaker 2: back to the middle of the field for his second read.
- 21:49Speaker 2: But now Caden Wallace at left tackle is later in
- 21:53Speaker 2: the down, so now he's on skates at left tackle.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Here comes the flag holding offense. Seventy hour and third
- 22:00Speaker 2: and fourteen. If Jacoby bris said had just released the
- 22:03Speaker 2: ball to Hunter Henry when he was supposed to on
- 22:06Speaker 2: the first read of the progression, then Kenan Wallace never
- 22:09Speaker 2: holts right, the flag comes like two beats the after
- 22:12Speaker 2: the throw. So those are the types of things I'm
- 22:15Speaker 2: seeing with Perssett on film. He's got to get the
- 22:18Speaker 2: offense in and out of of the plays at the
- 22:19Speaker 2: line of scrimmage. That's number one to me. But number
- 22:22Speaker 2: two is just some of these reads and these layup
- 22:25Speaker 2: type of opportunities. They have to hit those because they're
- 22:29Speaker 2: not going to get them very often. So if he's
- 22:31Speaker 2: not doing that, if he's not truly managing the game,
- 22:36Speaker 2: then I'm running out of reasons for him to be playing.
- 22:39Speaker 1: It is so and it felt like he was doing
- 22:41Speaker 1: that stuff better earlier in the season, Like I feel
- 22:43Speaker 1: like he's back in terms of the hitting, the layups
- 22:45Speaker 1: and things like that, like he astly did against Cincinnati.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I don't think.
- 22:50Speaker 1: At this point it's about why he is, why why
- 22:54Speaker 1: they do want to play him. I think it's about
- 22:55Speaker 1: why they don't want to play Drake May. Yeah, I
- 22:58Speaker 1: mean right, I think that's what it's about. At I
- 23:00Speaker 1: don't think Jacoby Brissett is showing you anything that you're like,
- 23:03Speaker 1: this is the guy we need in the lineup. It's
- 23:04Speaker 1: just we can get into the reasons we think, but
- 23:07Speaker 1: for whatever reason or reasons, it's we don't want to
- 23:10Speaker 1: start Trak May yet. Yeah, I think that's that's the
- 23:12Speaker 1: difference right now. I agree with a lot of what
- 23:14Speaker 1: you said about Jacoby Brissett. I just think from their
- 23:16Speaker 1: point of view, and honestly, partially for mine, that's not
- 23:19Speaker 1: the point.
- 23:20Speaker 2: And I've said this before.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I mean no disrespect to Jacoby Brissett, but he's thirty
- 23:23Speaker 1: one years old, he's on a one year contract, and
- 23:26Speaker 1: they just took a kid third. Overall, I know who
- 23:29Speaker 1: Jacoby Brissett is as a quarterback. Everybody knows who Jacoby
- 23:32Speaker 1: Brissett is as a quarterback. He's been the same guy
- 23:34Speaker 1: for most of his career in the NFL. I do
- 23:36Speaker 1: think he's a little underrated, but this is kind of
- 23:39Speaker 1: what he is. He's gonna more or less get your
- 23:43Speaker 1: offense through a sixty minute game and it's not gonna
- 23:46Speaker 1: look horrific. But there's not gonna be too many high points,
- 23:48Speaker 1: like true high points either. I that we're breaking down
- 23:54Speaker 1: why that is. I get why we're doing it, but
- 23:56Speaker 1: it's also like, okay, and what like what's the end goal?
- 24:00Speaker 1: Is the goal to fix Jacoby Brissett.
- 24:02Speaker 2: No, but I would say that the goal, the goal
- 24:06Speaker 2: to me is to is to start laying a foundation
- 24:11Speaker 2: of an offense. What this offense is going to look
- 24:15Speaker 2: like more importantly around the quarterback, no I than the
- 24:19Speaker 2: quarterback himself.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I think they can kind of do that. And this
- 24:23Speaker 1: is where we disagree. I go back to when you're
- 24:25Speaker 1: facing a near fifty percent pressure rate.
- 24:28Speaker 2: But why are they facing a near fifty percent pressure rate?
- 24:31Speaker 2: I don't think that. The reason why is just because
- 24:33Speaker 2: the offensive linding is. That's a large part of it.
- 24:36Speaker 2: When you get into a game against the Jets and
- 24:38Speaker 2: you get behind like they did against the Jets, and
- 24:41Speaker 2: the Jets come out with a good plan, Like give
- 24:43Speaker 2: Robert Saliz some credit. They blitzed a little bit in
- 24:46Speaker 2: this game when the Patriots weren't expecting that. Go look
- 24:49Speaker 2: at any game across the NFL. When a team gets
- 24:52Speaker 2: down by two scores and they become one dimensional, the
- 24:55Speaker 2: pressure right is going to go through the roof. I'm
- 24:57Speaker 2: not telling you that they would have blocked the Jets
- 24:59Speaker 2: awesome if it was a close game.
- 25:01Speaker 1: But this is this is where I go back to, like, well,
- 25:03Speaker 1: but it was a close game against Cincinnati. It was
- 25:05Speaker 1: a close game against Seattle, and it was still they
- 25:08Speaker 1: were I forget which is which, but they were first
- 25:10Speaker 1: and second worst in in past in pressure rate each
- 25:15Speaker 1: of those two games in the league. One week they
- 25:16Speaker 1: were first, one week they were second. Again, I forget
- 25:18Speaker 1: which ones which, but the point still stands, close games
- 25:22Speaker 1: against lesser rushing teams are still not blocking anybody. That
- 25:25Speaker 1: Jets game inflates the number a little bit because the
- 25:27Speaker 1: Jets are still so good. It honestly reminded me a
- 25:30Speaker 1: bit of the Eagles practice and what we said after that.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Remember how shocked people were after the Eagles practice. It's
- 25:36Speaker 1: not that that's going to be every game, but it's
- 25:38Speaker 1: that that's where the floor is. Is more so what's
- 25:40Speaker 1: shocking That is the floor and that goes beyond quarterback play.
- 25:44Speaker 2: It just does.
- 25:45Speaker 1: And they don't have an ability to execute a lot
- 25:49Speaker 1: of what they want to execute because the line is
- 25:53Speaker 1: where it is. I think some of the things you
- 25:55Speaker 1: want to see them do, Evan, just regardless of who
- 25:58Speaker 1: the quarterback is, even if it's into the right look,
- 26:00Speaker 1: aren't feasible. There's times that they're leaving six guys in
- 26:02Speaker 1: to protect against a four man rush and they're still
- 26:05Speaker 1: getting through an under two seconds. That kind of that's
- 26:09Speaker 1: going to be an issue no matter what you're calling.
- 26:11Speaker 2: I just think that they can call it better.
- 26:13Speaker 1: And I think they can call it better and maybe
- 26:15Speaker 1: instead of being at I think they're at like forty
- 26:18Speaker 1: six percent right now.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Everybody has a different rate.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I've been using next Gen stats just because that new
- 26:24Speaker 1: NFL Pro setup is awesome and I enjoy it.
- 26:28Speaker 2: That's surprising, honestly, why, because it's just very nerdy. They're
- 26:32Speaker 2: not usually into the numbers. I'm just I'm surprised.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Okay, we do this all time. I'm into the tangible numbers.
- 26:37Speaker 1: There's there's two here to just give me the advance.
- 26:40Speaker 2: If you haven't know how to work it, I'm surprised,
- 26:42Speaker 2: Like you know, an old man over here. I thought
- 26:44Speaker 2: maybe i'd have to show you, like a tutorial or something.
- 26:47Speaker 2: How am I the old man?
- 26:48Speaker 1: It's it's a much better user interface. That's why I
- 26:50Speaker 1: like it. It is very easy to use. Forty seven point
- 26:53Speaker 1: six percent. If they call it better, they at forty
- 26:56Speaker 1: four forty five, maybe.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I would say lower if they had get forty is
- 27:01Speaker 2: it really I don't know. We're working and hypothetically, but.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I just think I don't think calling it better at
- 27:12Speaker 1: the end of the day, Jimmy's and Joe's right, and
- 27:16Speaker 1: I just don't think they they have the personnel to
- 27:18Speaker 1: block some of the fronts they're going to see.
- 27:21Speaker 2: I just if it was me, I would just because
- 27:25Speaker 2: it's our show, I will just tell you I would
- 27:27Speaker 2: like to see them do more. From the play calling standpoint,
- 27:32Speaker 2: you mentioned that they have plays in there where they
- 27:34Speaker 2: have five, you know, six guys into block. Yeah, they're
- 27:37Speaker 2: doing a lot of like chip and release with their
- 27:39Speaker 2: tight ends. I would like to see a lot more.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Let's have everybody into block and let's just send two
- 27:46Speaker 2: guys into the route. And the other teams do this
- 27:48Speaker 2: all the time, you know, and I'm not saying they
- 27:50Speaker 2: can't do that. Let's get seven guys in there with
- 27:54Speaker 2: the back also kind of as a last you know,
- 27:56Speaker 2: line of defense off of play action or probably something
- 27:59Speaker 2: like that. When you want to push the ball down
- 28:01Speaker 2: the field, this should be max protection. This shouldn't be
- 28:04Speaker 2: six guys, it should be eight. Good.
- 28:05Speaker 1: But to go back to your point, which was they
- 28:08Speaker 1: need to start developing what their offense is going to
- 28:10Speaker 1: be around the quarterback. Is that going to be a
- 28:12Speaker 1: staple of their offense or is that something that they
- 28:14Speaker 1: have to do right now because of the personnel they have.
- 28:18Speaker 1: And I'm less concerned of who the quarterback is. Yeah,
- 28:21Speaker 1: I hear what you're saying.
- 28:22Speaker 2: I'm less concerned about the scheme element of getting their
- 28:24Speaker 2: offense off the ground. I'm more concerned. We talk so
- 28:28Speaker 2: much about Drake May's confidence and Drake May seeing some
- 28:32Speaker 2: shots go through and things like that. What about Jaylen Polk,
- 28:35Speaker 2: Like what about Caden Wallace? What about Leyden Robinson? Like
- 28:38Speaker 2: those guys. I just feel like people don't think those
- 28:41Speaker 2: guys matter. Like, if they're gonna get this plane off
- 28:43Speaker 2: the ground, then those guys are gonna be a big
- 28:46Speaker 2: part of what Javon Baker I'll throw his name in
- 28:49Speaker 2: there as well. You know, if they're going to truly
- 28:51Speaker 2: be a viable offense once Drake May is ready and
- 28:55Speaker 2: they get in there, those guys need to make some plays.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Like we don't know And from an La Wolf perspective,
- 29:01Speaker 2: sure we don't know what Jalen Polk is because he
- 29:04Speaker 2: doesn't get the ball.
- 29:05Speaker 1: I believe with that, And this is where I think
- 29:07Speaker 1: if you're those guys, you're coaching those guys, it has
- 29:10Speaker 1: to very much be about individual progress. Like it probably
- 29:15Speaker 1: would help Jalen Polk's confidence if he got to Baltimore.
- 29:18Speaker 1: But he's getting open, like he's running good routes, he's
- 29:21Speaker 1: not doing.
- 29:22Speaker 2: His part, he has gotten open some no doubt.
- 29:24Speaker 1: I would even say the same for guy. And we
- 29:26Speaker 1: know Pop Douglas was discouraged the other week and they
- 29:28Speaker 1: got in the ball more and that was good. But like,
- 29:30Speaker 1: I almost feel like the message has to be, you know,
- 29:34Speaker 1: you're doing the right thing. And as much as the sucks,
- 29:39Speaker 1: I know people are gonna roll their eyes to this,
- 29:40Speaker 1: but it's almost like you're doing the right thing. You've
- 29:43Speaker 1: got to give us a little bit of time to
- 29:44Speaker 1: catch up to you, and that's where you're gonna roll
- 29:46Speaker 1: your eyes and say, well, Wooden. Drake may help with that,
- 29:49Speaker 1: maybe to an extent, but with where the offensive line's
- 29:52Speaker 1: at again, I only think it's gonna help to a ceiling.
- 29:54Speaker 1: And the reality is, if Drake May gets hurt or
- 29:57Speaker 1: starts developing bad habits, then it doesn't help catch anybody
- 30:01Speaker 1: up because now Drake May's in trouble.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, so just I don't want to belabor this,
- 30:05Speaker 2: but just two things I want to just point out
- 30:07Speaker 2: with that we can watch on film, you and I
- 30:10Speaker 2: or anybody can watch on film and say, oh, Jaylen
- 30:13Speaker 2: Polk wins on that route, he wins on that route,
- 30:15Speaker 2: he wins on nar rowt I would I would just
- 30:17Speaker 2: say this as a general not even about Jalen Polk.
- 30:20Speaker 2: If you guys that are listening to the show, If
- 30:22Speaker 2: you guys do go watch the All twenty two and
- 30:24Speaker 2: try to break these things down. I would just the
- 30:26Speaker 2: one piece of advice I would give you is make
- 30:28Speaker 2: sure you're a cognizant of where he is in the progression,
- 30:32Speaker 2: because oftentimes he might look open, but he's actually on
- 30:36Speaker 2: the back side of the read and the corner knows
- 30:39Speaker 2: that the quarterback's not looking in that direction. Or the
- 30:42Speaker 2: safety in the middle of the field. Who's helping, you know,
- 30:44Speaker 2: the cornerbacks and help in a post safety coverage. You know,
- 30:47Speaker 2: a single high safety over the top. If Jalen Polk's
- 30:51Speaker 2: running a go route on the left hand side of
- 30:53Speaker 2: the field, but Jacobe's eyes are on the right side
- 30:55Speaker 2: of the field, and the safety is gonna gravitate towards
- 30:58Speaker 2: his eyes. So even though he he looks open, if
- 31:01Speaker 2: it was going to him, he might not be as open, right,
- 31:04Speaker 2: And that's not a Polk thing, that's just a general.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Well that's where you want a quarterback who's able to
- 31:08Speaker 1: kind of flip that and go to the backside.
- 31:10Speaker 2: But yeah, that just really quickly.
- 31:12Speaker 1: But even within that, like you agree, he's been getting open.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he has got up sometimes. The thing to
- 31:20Speaker 2: me though with Polk and I know that you're gonna
- 31:22Speaker 2: tell me that, well, we know he has good hands
- 31:24Speaker 2: from the you know, draft film and all that, but
- 31:27Speaker 2: what does he do with the catch point? That's a
- 31:30Speaker 2: big element of playing receiver in this league. There's not
- 31:34Speaker 2: a whole lot of wide open catches in the NFL.
- 31:38Speaker 2: You're gonna be catching in traffic. You're gonna be catching
- 31:41Speaker 2: with a man coverage defender draped all over you. Like
- 31:43Speaker 2: the throw that everybody's going crazy about with Jaden Daniels,
- 31:47Speaker 2: Dax Hill is like all over Terry McLaurin on that play.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Terry McLaurin finishes through contact to make that catch. What
- 31:54Speaker 2: does Jalen Polk do in those scenarios? What does Jalen
- 31:57Speaker 2: Pulk do after the catch with the football in his hand.
- 32:00Speaker 2: It's like, does he have a yak gear in the
- 32:02Speaker 2: open field? Is he gonna bring anything in that element
- 32:05Speaker 2: of the game. These things are all going to decide
- 32:09Speaker 2: what is Jalen Polk steiling as a player in the league.
- 32:12Speaker 2: I hate to use these phrases because I don't think
- 32:15Speaker 2: it's necessarily how the people in the league actually look
- 32:17Speaker 2: at it. That's how we look at it. We all
- 32:20Speaker 2: believe the Patriots need a wide receiver one, right, a
- 32:23Speaker 2: number one alpha wide receiver? Is Jalen Polk a wide receiver? Two?
- 32:29Speaker 2: Is Pop Douglas a wide receiver? Three? Like, is that
- 32:33Speaker 2: a viable top three? Let's just play it hypotheticals again.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Is T Higgins Jalen Polk Pop Douglas an actual receiving core?
- 32:44Speaker 2: Not this is the best we got, but an actual
- 32:48Speaker 2: receiving core on a good NFL offense. Until I see
- 32:52Speaker 2: what Jalen Polk is made of in the league by
- 32:55Speaker 2: throwing the ball successfully to him, I don't know that answer.
- 32:59Speaker 2: If I'm Elliott w and that more importantly than this season,
- 33:02Speaker 2: that makes next offseason more complicated because now I'm still
- 33:06Speaker 2: asking questions about players on my roster, Caden Wallace, is
- 33:09Speaker 2: he a serviceable NFL tackle? Is he gonna be able
- 33:12Speaker 2: to be a right tackle of the future for this
- 33:15Speaker 2: team if they have these issues with play calling and
- 33:17Speaker 2: quarterback play and all this type of stuff, I might
- 33:20Speaker 2: not know the answer to that at the end of
- 33:22Speaker 2: the season. More importantly than wins, losses anything like that,
- 33:26Speaker 2: this season is answering questions about the players that are
- 33:29Speaker 2: already on your roster.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Well, if you're gonna do that, you've got to get
- 33:33Speaker 1: players playing in the right position. So that to me
- 33:36Speaker 1: is like Kane Wallason right, They need to get Kane
- 33:38Speaker 1: Waalson right to evaluate him right tackle whatever it looks like.
- 33:41Speaker 1: They got to get Jalen Polk on the field to
- 33:43Speaker 1: evaluate him in all of that. So I do agree
- 33:47Speaker 1: with you on that, and again it goes back to
- 33:48Speaker 1: the play calling.
- 33:49Speaker 2: But again.
- 33:51Speaker 1: I don't Jacoby Versett doesn't change that much or shouldn't change, Like,
- 33:57Speaker 1: you should be able to play Kane wallasont right tackle,
- 34:00Speaker 1: regardless of who's a quarterback. If you're not, that's on
- 34:03Speaker 1: that's because you don't. You didn't have the right personnel
- 34:05Speaker 1: going into the season, and you suddenly have to panic
- 34:07Speaker 1: move them.
- 34:08Speaker 2: If you put Kaden Wallace at right tackle and then
- 34:11Speaker 2: I promise I'll let this go, but it's obviously irking me.
- 34:15Speaker 2: If you play Caden Wallace at right tackle and as
- 34:18Speaker 2: a rookie, you leave him on an island against Nick
- 34:21Speaker 2: Bosa and the quarterback decides to hold the ball for
- 34:23Speaker 2: three point five seconds in the pocket and he gives
- 34:25Speaker 2: up a sack. What are we really learning about Caden Wallas.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Well, you see how he competes up to that point,
- 34:34Speaker 1: like you're not expecting him to win for three point five.
- 34:36Speaker 2: I think you have to just go, okay, let's go
- 34:38Speaker 2: it for what it is. Well, let's call it three.
- 34:39Speaker 1: I would also say, you'd hope the quarterback, the veteran
- 34:43Speaker 1: quarterback would understand that you would there's a rookie right tackle.
- 34:46Speaker 2: IM I know, but I would. I just don't. He
- 34:50Speaker 2: doesn't like. That's the thing. So just to move on
- 34:54Speaker 2: because I know I'm belaboring it the way that I
- 34:57Speaker 2: look at the Drake May of all of this, because
- 34:59Speaker 2: I know that I've already said my piece about this
- 35:02Speaker 2: on Tuesday with Drake May, that I would start. I
- 35:05Speaker 2: didn't say this week, okay, I said, nah, you've kind
- 35:08Speaker 2: of said this week. No, I did not say this week.
- 35:11Speaker 2: I said specifically week five at the earliest against Miami.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Next week, against whatever quarterback the Dolphins are gonna throw.
- 35:18Speaker 2: And I know he's not playing the quarterback, but you
- 35:20Speaker 2: understand my play whatever quarterback the Dolphins throw out against
- 35:23Speaker 2: the Patriots next week at home here in Jillette Stadium.
- 35:27Speaker 2: I like that landing spot for Drake May. The elements
- 35:31Speaker 2: with Drake May that I wanted to bring up number one.
- 35:34Speaker 2: I really feel like we all have to mentally prepare
- 35:39Speaker 2: ourselves for the style of quarterback that Drake May is.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Drake May is not going right away to be a
- 35:50Speaker 2: precision pocket passer. He's not gonna have perfect footwork. He's
- 35:54Speaker 2: not gonna throw on time to every single first read.
- 35:56Speaker 2: He's not gonna be a step ahead of defenses. Like
- 35:59Speaker 2: if Drake was making some of the mistakes that Jacoby
- 36:01Speaker 2: Brissette was making, I'd say, oh, rookie quarterback, like that's
- 36:04Speaker 2: gonna happen. He's not gonna see every blitz, He's not
- 36:06Speaker 2: gonna read every coverage perfectly. That's the frustrating part to
- 36:10Speaker 2: me with Jacob Rissette's like it's your nine, dude, and
- 36:12Speaker 2: where we're still doing these things with Drake May. We
- 36:17Speaker 2: have to prepare for the fact that this is early
- 36:19Speaker 2: career Josh Allen. This is not early career Tom Brady
- 36:23Speaker 2: right where like he's he that's how he's going to win.
- 36:26Speaker 2: So on certain plays like I know the fourth down
- 36:29Speaker 2: play I sent it to you last night where he
- 36:31Speaker 2: scrambles for a first down in the game, you could
- 36:34Speaker 2: make a case that he should have thrown that ball
- 36:36Speaker 2: to Hunter Henry in the first window on a first
- 36:39Speaker 2: window slant. That ain't Drake May's game. If that's the
- 36:42Speaker 2: guy that you wanted that he was pre snap, he
- 36:45Speaker 2: was going to recognize that Hunter Henry had to off
- 36:47Speaker 2: coverage and had the matchup, and then he was gonna
- 36:49Speaker 2: throw it right out of his release to get him
- 36:51Speaker 2: the football. If that's the guy that you wanted to draft,
- 36:55Speaker 2: then you drafted the wrong guy. Like that's more like
- 36:58Speaker 2: Bo Nicks to be honest with you, like you know
- 37:00Speaker 2: you drafted the wrong guy. What Drake May is going
- 37:02Speaker 2: to do is he's gonna pick up the first down.
- 37:05Speaker 2: When they leave the the edge uncovered and they give
- 37:08Speaker 2: him the corner, he's gonna run for the first down.
- 37:10Speaker 2: That's what Drake May is gonna do. So we all
- 37:13Speaker 2: have to adjust because I feel like we've even though
- 37:15Speaker 2: it didn't work out with Mac, it's still Mac is
- 37:17Speaker 2: still in that pocket passer mold. He's still in that
- 37:21Speaker 2: more towards that Brady side than the Josh Allen side.
- 37:24Speaker 2: We have to prepare ourselves for the fact that this
- 37:26Speaker 2: is a playground quarterback, Like this is a different style
- 37:30Speaker 2: of QB. I know, the Allen stuff. Uh, that drives
- 37:34Speaker 2: you nuts. It We're gonna see that what Drake May.
- 37:36Speaker 1: It drives me nuts when when somebody leads the league
- 37:39Speaker 1: turnovers and is hailed as you know, arguably the best
- 37:43Speaker 1: of his position. That that's what bugs me. It's not
- 37:45Speaker 1: worth style itself. It's just recognizing what it is. If
- 37:49Speaker 1: Drake May him play it and not lead the league
- 37:51Speaker 1: in turnovers, great, it would be awesome. I know there's
- 37:53Speaker 1: gonna be turnovers early in his career. I'm not expecting
- 37:55Speaker 1: him to figure it all out right away. I think
- 37:58Speaker 1: that's ridiculous. But like you said, not throwing the ball
- 38:01Speaker 1: to Hunter Henry and taking off and running instead. How
- 38:04Speaker 1: many times at least early in his career did Josh
- 38:07Speaker 1: Allen try to force that throw and get picked because
- 38:08Speaker 1: he doesn't have the accuracy to make it.
- 38:10Speaker 2: It's possible And to.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Your point, I think that's a growing moment for Drake
- 38:13Speaker 1: May where he realizes that's not a throw he can
- 38:16Speaker 1: make and takes off and runs instead because he finds
- 38:18Speaker 1: the opening that's encouraging. It is a completely different style
- 38:21Speaker 1: of quarterbacking, and I'm with you on that the Patriots
- 38:23Speaker 1: fans are not used to and there is gonna.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Be And I'm not like finger wagging. I am finger
- 38:27Speaker 2: wagging a little bit at some of the draft analysis
- 38:31Speaker 2: of Drake May because I think this is to me,
- 38:33Speaker 2: this is where the draft analysis missed the mark with
- 38:37Speaker 2: Drake May the most because they, you know, people like JT. O.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Sullivan and Dan Orlovski watch his footwork and are like
- 38:43Speaker 2: this is a mess, Like this is not functional. But
- 38:47Speaker 2: Drake May is also just not that kind of quarterback.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Like he's not gonna have perfect footwork, right, He's not
- 38:52Speaker 2: going to make perfect reads. What he's going to do
- 38:55Speaker 2: is he's gonna throw some beauties down the field, Like
- 38:59Speaker 2: he's gonna have some perfect passes down the field, and
- 39:02Speaker 2: his unc tape is a lot of peaks and valleys.
- 39:06Speaker 2: It's a lot, it's a roller coaster. But what you hope,
- 39:08Speaker 2: just like what happened eventually with Josh Allen, is you
- 39:11Speaker 2: hope that the highlights outweigh the low lights by so
- 39:15Speaker 2: much that it ends up evening itself out right or
- 39:18Speaker 2: even being a net positive with Gonna go down that.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Justin Herbert Path gets real talent around him and it
- 39:24Speaker 1: doesn't have to do as much of the heavy lifting
- 39:26Speaker 1: on his own.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a really fine point too, the way I
- 39:30Speaker 2: would like them to go. So that that's one thing
- 39:33Speaker 2: with Drake May. The other thing with Drake May is
- 39:38Speaker 2: why I I think he's their best chance to win
- 39:41Speaker 2: football games right now, not not even just because I
- 39:45Speaker 2: want him to play because it's my best interest or
- 39:47Speaker 2: because it's the most exciting or any of those types
- 39:49Speaker 2: of things. I think it's a little bit of that,
- 39:51Speaker 2: But for me personally, yeah, it's a little bit of that,
- 39:53Speaker 2: but in their best interest. The style of play that
- 39:57Speaker 2: they can play with Drake May, a lot of the
- 40:01Speaker 2: play calling elements that we're talking about with the quarterback
- 40:04Speaker 2: and with the play caller, they can do a lot
- 40:07Speaker 2: of things with Drake May that they simply cannot do
- 40:11Speaker 2: with Jakobe Wesset from the shotgun. And if I'm Alex
- 40:14Speaker 2: van Pell and I'm Ben McAdoo, I think has a
- 40:17Speaker 2: big hand in sort of the schematic direction of the offense.
- 40:20Speaker 2: And Van Pelt said it today. If a quarterback's a
- 40:23Speaker 2: run and shoot quarterback, we're gonna run the run and
- 40:25Speaker 2: shoot right. So Drake May is a gun quarterback, I
- 40:28Speaker 2: would put him in the shotgun. My early down offense
- 40:32Speaker 2: would be gun run, read option, RPO, quick game, all
- 40:37Speaker 2: these types of elements. Guess what that does for the
- 40:39Speaker 2: offensive line. That makes life easier on the offensive line.
- 40:43Speaker 2: If the quarterback is a factor in the run game,
- 40:46Speaker 2: now the offense has an advantage in the blocking game, right,
- 40:50Speaker 2: like they have a plus one in the blocking game.
- 40:52Speaker 2: It makes it easier for the offensive line. Quick game
- 40:55Speaker 2: in RPO are ways to move the football on first
- 40:58Speaker 2: and second down that are easier for the offensive line.
- 41:01Speaker 2: If he throws a bubble out to Pop Douglas on
- 41:03Speaker 2: an RPO, the offensive line doesn't even need to block anybody, right,
- 41:07Speaker 2: they don't even need to worry about it. So I'm RPO,
- 41:10Speaker 2: I'm quick game I'm gun run and gun action. Obviously
- 41:13Speaker 2: off the gun run, and then on third down you
- 41:16Speaker 2: do what you did in the game on Thursday night
- 41:19Speaker 2: when he got in there, You put him in the shotgun.
- 41:21Speaker 2: You run some layered in breaking routes over the middle
- 41:23Speaker 2: of the field. If you get man to man coverage
- 41:26Speaker 2: and everybody's covered, guess what, you have a six foot
- 41:28Speaker 2: four to two hundred and twenty five pound guy that
- 41:30Speaker 2: can get outside the pocket and move. So that their
- 41:33Speaker 2: whole offense right now is predicated on all these under center,
- 41:38Speaker 2: seven step drop bootleg actions, like all these delayed type
- 41:42Speaker 2: of offense that is taking a while to get these
- 41:45Speaker 2: plays off, and I just feel like the play calling
- 41:49Speaker 2: can be morphed and changed to better suit not just
- 41:53Speaker 2: the quarterback with Drake, but also with the supporting casts.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Like the line is gonna have a much easier job
- 42:00Speaker 2: blocking these types of concepts than they would blocking a
- 42:04Speaker 2: seven step drop from under center for Jacoby Brissett. So
- 42:08Speaker 2: in some ways, it's about Drake may getting out there.
- 42:10Speaker 2: It's selfish. In some ways, I also believe that it
- 42:13Speaker 2: would really benefit the rest of the offense in the
- 42:16Speaker 2: supporting cast to have him out there, so I think
- 42:18Speaker 2: I'm gonna get my wish, So I'm not gonna go
- 42:20Speaker 2: all crazy about it, because it sounds like we're building
- 42:23Speaker 2: up towards that based off of everything that we're hearing.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Very complimentary from the coaching staff last couple of days.
- 42:28Speaker 1: And I'll say to that, the big takeaway is Van
- 42:31Speaker 1: Pelt saying today he makes a point of tailoring the
- 42:34Speaker 1: offense to the quarterbacking out the other way around. So
- 42:36Speaker 1: the people who I've seen some people say like what
- 42:39Speaker 1: they're running with Burssett right now is what they're gonna
- 42:41Speaker 1: run with May, I wouldn't expect that to be the case.
- 42:45Speaker 2: No, And I also I wouldn't expect that to be
- 42:48Speaker 2: the case because Number One, in the preseason and in
- 42:51Speaker 2: the twelve snaps or twelve dropbacks, I should say that
- 42:53Speaker 2: he had in the game on Thursday night, he was
- 42:56Speaker 2: barely under center in both instances, like he had I
- 43:00Speaker 2: want to say a handful of under center plays in
- 43:02Speaker 2: the preseason, like it was very low number. And then
- 43:05Speaker 2: and the other night, granted they're down and maybe they're
- 43:07Speaker 2: still kind of in like a four minute hurry up
- 43:09Speaker 2: type of offense, but he wasn't under center at all.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Every single drop back he took was from the gun,
- 43:14Speaker 2: So I don't think they plan on pigeonholing him into
- 43:18Speaker 2: being an under center quarterback. With that said, I'm not
- 43:22Speaker 2: with everybody quite. I think it's we're going a little
- 43:25Speaker 2: overboard with it. I don't think it's a totally terrible
- 43:28Speaker 2: fit for Drake May's skill set. A lot of the
- 43:32Speaker 2: downfield route combinations that they run off their under center
- 43:35Speaker 2: looks off play action. He was running a lot of
- 43:38Speaker 2: that stuff at North Carolina, just out of the pistol, right,
- 43:41Speaker 2: and but they were running a lot of those like
- 43:43Speaker 2: let's flood the sideline and he's gonna throw off the corner,
- 43:47Speaker 2: big posts, you know, crossing routes like they were running
- 43:50Speaker 2: a lot of those types of things at North Carolina.
- 43:52Speaker 2: So I don't necessarily agree that it's a it's an
- 43:55Speaker 2: awful fit for what Drake made.
- 43:57Speaker 1: I think as long as Van Pelt is willing to
- 44:00Speaker 1: good on that, he's not gonna shoehorn him into some
- 44:03Speaker 1: of the more concrete stuff we know Van Pelt wants
- 44:06Speaker 1: to do, but just isn't a fit.
- 44:07Speaker 2: I think that's fine. Yeah, all right, I got all
- 44:10Speaker 2: everything off my chest. I think because I just when
- 44:12Speaker 2: we don't have a show, when they play on Thursday
- 44:14Speaker 2: night and then we don't have a show to do
- 44:16Speaker 2: until Thursday. There's a lot of stuff that's been on
- 44:18Speaker 2: my mind, but I think I'm gonna get my wish,
- 44:21Speaker 2: So I'm not gonna scream and yell today about playing
- 44:24Speaker 2: Drake may I just I love Jacoby. He's been a
- 44:28Speaker 2: really great guy to cover. You can tell he's a
- 44:30Speaker 2: great teammate, he's a good person, he's a great dude,
- 44:33Speaker 2: all these types of things. But we're getting to the
- 44:36Speaker 2: point if they play like they did last Thursday night
- 44:39Speaker 2: on Sunday in San Francisco, which is very possible, then
- 44:43Speaker 2: we're getting to the point where it's just it's not
- 44:46Speaker 2: good enough. It's not NFL caliber.
- 44:49Speaker 1: I mean, I'm I'm ready that once they have a
- 44:51Speaker 1: representative offensive line, I'm ready to start having the conversation
- 44:54Speaker 1: about making the change. This is I've been consistent on this.
- 44:58Speaker 1: I've said this since the spring. Right find the best
- 45:01Speaker 1: five and then make the change. I think we know
- 45:04Speaker 1: what the best five is at this point. It may
- 45:05Speaker 1: be by default just because this five hasn't played together,
- 45:09Speaker 1: but just looking at all the other options they've tried
- 45:11Speaker 1: and might also be the only five where they get
- 45:13Speaker 1: everybody in their true position left to right. Vanderian Lowe
- 45:17Speaker 1: honestly at left guard. Whether it's City so, Michael Jordan,
- 45:20Speaker 1: Laden Robinson, you can have those guys. You could still
- 45:22Speaker 1: kind of be mixing it up there, and I think
- 45:24Speaker 1: be good, be ready for Drake May. Your best answer
- 45:26Speaker 1: is probably City. So, but Michael Jordan has not been bad.
- 45:29Speaker 2: No, I's been uncovered a lot like he hasn't had
- 45:31Speaker 2: as many pass rushers line up over him for whatever
- 45:34Speaker 2: and just the way they're friends or have been a line.
- 45:37Speaker 2: But he's probably been their most steady guy.
- 45:39Speaker 1: So Vaderian Lowell left tackle, called City So, Michael Jordan
- 45:43Speaker 1: left guard. Whoever, David Andrews at center, Mike go and
- 45:46Speaker 1: went who.
- 45:47Speaker 2: At right guard?
- 45:47Speaker 1: You can take your victory lap on this one if
- 45:49Speaker 1: you want, but I think it's clear at this point
- 45:51Speaker 1: he is a guard. And then Kane Wallace at right tackle.
- 45:54Speaker 1: You have everybody playing in position, you get, for the
- 45:57Speaker 1: most part, your best line and all on the field together.
- 46:01Speaker 1: If you can put that line out there, I'm honestly
- 46:04Speaker 1: at the point where I don't even need to see it. First,
- 46:06Speaker 1: I kind of just trust that group again, mostly because
- 46:09Speaker 1: I'm putting that group in by default, and there's nobody
- 46:12Speaker 1: I even wonder, outside of maybe figuring out a left
- 46:14Speaker 1: tackle what you want to do. Once you can put
- 46:17Speaker 1: that group on the field, I'm ready to say, Okay,
- 46:20Speaker 1: let's do the thing. Let's put the kid in. Once
- 46:22Speaker 1: you can put that group on the field. If it's
- 46:24Speaker 1: Dementrey Jacobs at left tackle, who just does not approve
- 46:27Speaker 1: an NFL player, if it's Kaden Wallace at left tackle
- 46:29Speaker 1: who's playing out of position. If it's Mike going Winnowitt
- 46:32Speaker 1: right tackle who's playing out of position. If it's Leyden
- 46:34Speaker 1: Robinson in there, who has really struggled as a pass
- 46:37Speaker 1: protector through three games. I do worry about developing bad habits.
- 46:42Speaker 1: I worry about a long term injury, which is the
- 46:44Speaker 1: worst case scenario, because then he Drake may lose a
- 46:47Speaker 1: whole year of development and people.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Say, oh, he's a quarterback. He's gonna get hit, He's
- 46:50Speaker 2: gonna face pressure. He has to learn how to deal
- 46:52Speaker 2: with it.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Yes, to an extent, he's gonna have to learn how
- 46:55Speaker 1: to deal with that, and he will need to learn
- 46:56Speaker 1: how to face it. But where they're at right now
- 46:59Speaker 1: with this group is not the risk is higher than
- 47:06Speaker 1: it realistically needs to be. I would compare it to
- 47:08Speaker 1: you know, learning how to drive. We all learned how
- 47:10Speaker 1: to drive because when of our parents took us to
- 47:13Speaker 1: an empty parking lot somewhere on a Saturday, right you
- 47:15Speaker 1: drove around at fifteen miles an hour. Right now, Drake
- 47:19Speaker 1: May going in and learning how to handle pressure and
- 47:21Speaker 1: taking hits in the NFL. And this environment, to me,
- 47:24Speaker 1: would be like learning how to drive by racing the
- 47:26Speaker 1: Daytona five hundred. It's just it does it. You don't
- 47:30Speaker 1: need to do that. It doesn't need to be that extreme. Yes,
- 47:33Speaker 1: he's gonna need to learn it. Yes, there will be
- 47:35Speaker 1: some risk at some point, and you just have to
- 47:37Speaker 1: take the risk. And that's part of it. And you
- 47:39Speaker 1: hope that you drafted a guy who's good enough that
- 47:41Speaker 1: he com mitigates some of that. Right now, you're just
- 47:44Speaker 1: asking him more than you realistically should need to ask
- 47:46Speaker 1: him to do. And that is the one thing holding
- 47:49Speaker 1: me back from saying put Drake May in right now.
- 47:51Speaker 1: But again, once you get a representative doesn't have to
- 47:53Speaker 1: be good. I'm not saying the line has to be perfect.
- 47:55Speaker 1: I'm not even saying it has to be good, it
- 47:57Speaker 1: just has to be better. Once you get a better
- 48:00Speaker 1: representative offensive line, then I think it's time to make
- 48:04Speaker 1: the change in that. I don't think it's gonna happen
- 48:05Speaker 1: this week, just based off what we're seeing in practice.
- 48:08Speaker 1: If Venerian Loan and Ken Walls are going to go
- 48:11Speaker 1: Week five against Miami, let's have the conversation.
- 48:14Speaker 2: I'm ready for it. Yeah, I hear you about the
- 48:16Speaker 2: offensive line. I don't know if they're going to be
- 48:19Speaker 2: in a position for everybody to be in their quote
- 48:22Speaker 2: unquote natural spots like Ken Wallace might have to play
- 48:26Speaker 2: left tackle this year. That just might That might be
- 48:29Speaker 2: this week.
- 48:30Speaker 1: I'm fine with Darian Lowell left tackle. You think Verdarian Low'
- 48:32Speaker 1: is gonna miss the season?
- 48:33Speaker 2: No, I well, he's gonna be out this week, I think,
- 48:35Speaker 2: But I think this week. But could he be back
- 48:37Speaker 2: against Miami. It's possible. Yeah, I hear what you're saying.
- 48:42Speaker 2: For me, I'm with you, like I don't want to
- 48:45Speaker 2: throw him out there behind Trey Jacobs and Zach Thomas
- 48:47Speaker 2: on the left side a lot either. That's what they
- 48:49Speaker 2: did at the end of the game. On Thursday night,
- 48:51Speaker 2: the Jets had called off the dogs for.
- 48:53Speaker 1: All at that point, whatever, I'm not against if they're
- 48:56Speaker 1: down twenty five to the Niners, because the team's not
- 48:59Speaker 1: you know, Boss will be out of the game. They're
- 49:01Speaker 1: not hinting their ears back there in prevatt. I'm talking
- 49:04Speaker 1: about a full sixty minutes behind that unit with it
- 49:09Speaker 1: against the defense that is going to blitz the crap
- 49:12Speaker 1: out of you.
- 49:13Speaker 2: If I had more faith in the in the play calling,
- 49:15Speaker 2: in the coordinating on offense, where they were gonna put
- 49:19Speaker 2: him into the game and they were going to really
- 49:23Speaker 2: script it to the point where some of the things
- 49:27Speaker 2: I was talking about just a few minutes ago, with
- 49:29Speaker 2: some of the concepts that they could run with him
- 49:31Speaker 2: to get the ball out of his hands. If they
- 49:33Speaker 2: were gonna do those types of things, and I felt
- 49:35Speaker 2: confident in them designing it and calling it, then I
- 49:39Speaker 2: would feel I'm at one hundred percent. Let's play Drake
- 49:43Speaker 2: May I'd be had one hundred and ten percent if
- 49:45Speaker 2: I really had a ton of confidence in the coordinator.
- 49:47Speaker 2: That's the only thing that's like holding me back a
- 49:49Speaker 2: little bit is that if they're gonna put him in there,
- 49:53Speaker 2: they have to put him in there, and then they
- 49:54Speaker 2: have to manage the situation. I'm not talking about putting
- 49:57Speaker 2: training wheels on Drake necessarily. I'm more about talk about
- 50:00Speaker 2: putting training wheels on the offensive line, right, and like
- 50:02Speaker 2: making it as easy as possible for the offensive line
- 50:06Speaker 2: to block people so that he doesn't get killed. To
- 50:08Speaker 2: your point, right, if they had a little bit more
- 50:11Speaker 2: faith in that, If I had a little bit more
- 50:13Speaker 2: faith I should say in that, then I would be
- 50:15Speaker 2: all gung ho about this. That does give me a
- 50:19Speaker 2: little bit of pause that right now, the combination of
- 50:22Speaker 2: things is not working right, And that's sort of what
- 50:24Speaker 2: I'm getting at. The quarterback, the play caller, the deficiencies
- 50:27Speaker 2: they have on the offensive line. The combination of those
- 50:30Speaker 2: three things doesn't fit together. And there's one thing that
- 50:34Speaker 2: can actually change, the line in the play caller is
- 50:36Speaker 2: not changing. Vampelt's going to be the coordinator and the
- 50:38Speaker 2: line's going to be the line. There's just one person
- 50:41Speaker 2: that can change, and that's the.
- 50:42Speaker 1: Quarter But the line's not gonna be the line because
- 50:44Speaker 1: you're gonna get guys back.
- 50:45Speaker 2: You're gonna get I hope, yeah, I hope.
- 50:48Speaker 1: So they're gonna get some of these the fact that
- 50:50Speaker 1: low and walls are out there even if they're not
- 50:52Speaker 1: fully participating, like those are short term injuries. Those are
- 50:55Speaker 1: not guys who are dealing with long term injuries.
- 50:57Speaker 2: I hope. So yeah, I agree with you. I agree
- 50:59Speaker 2: with you. All right, let's let's open up the phone lines.
- 51:01Speaker 2: We're gonna do three up, three down. Still, but I
- 51:03Speaker 2: want to know people have been waiting on the line.
- 51:06Speaker 2: And if you want to email in the new there's

- 51:49Speaker 2: for waiting. I appreciate it. Patty is an ago on
- 51:51Speaker 2: what's up?
- 51:52Speaker 4: Patty good after Agen? Hey, So got a bold prediction
- 52:00Speaker 4: for you, and then I got a question for you.
- 52:02Speaker 4: So I Brooke. Last week Evan had the prediction that
- 52:06Speaker 4: Drake we were going to see Drake May in the
- 52:08Speaker 4: Jets game. So my bold prediction is that Drake May
- 52:11Speaker 4: is going to start the second half of this game
- 52:13Speaker 4: in San Francisco because Jacoby is going to be so
- 52:16Speaker 4: bad that they're going to have no other choice. And
- 52:18Speaker 4: he's not giving up the reins. He's just this is it, baby,
- 52:22Speaker 4: And don't I can't tell you why. I think this
- 52:26Speaker 4: way is just a gut feeling. And this question, and
- 52:30Speaker 4: this question is is more so geared towards Alex because
- 52:33Speaker 4: Alex here is kind of a sickle like me. You
- 52:36Speaker 4: love college football, and you live in New England, and
- 52:40Speaker 4: and I know you you probably have you know, talked,
- 52:44Speaker 4: talked through your guides and watch your games and looked
- 52:48Speaker 4: at a few different people. So we all know that
- 52:50Speaker 4: we need less tackle talent in depth So have you
- 52:54Speaker 4: seen anything or have you looked up this kid Wyatt?
- 52:57Speaker 4: I think you spell say his last name Milam for
- 53:00Speaker 4: West Virginia as a depth piece maybe in this upcoming draft.
- 53:05Speaker 4: Three years, three years started. So far this year and
- 53:08Speaker 4: the last two years, he has not given up a sack.
- 53:11Speaker 4: I think he's given up a total of maybe twenty
- 53:14Speaker 4: four pressures too in three years. Have you looked at him?
- 53:18Speaker 4: What do you think of him? And if not, check
- 53:21Speaker 4: him out? That's all I got.
- 53:23Speaker 2: Thanks for the call, Patty. Do you got anything?
- 53:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to pull up I actually wrote about
- 53:28Speaker 1: this guy when I did my college football preview back
- 53:30Speaker 1: in August, So just give me a second.
- 53:31Speaker 2: To pull up my notes and find out. Of course
- 53:32Speaker 2: you didn't.
- 53:33Speaker 1: I did on the on the first point, I don't
- 53:38Speaker 1: think that's gonna happen in terms of like Drake May
- 53:41Speaker 1: is gonna start second half. If you do that, that's
- 53:43Speaker 1: the switch. That's the switch at Drake May's team at
- 53:45Speaker 1: that point. You're not gonna I.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Don't love the idea of of doing that. Now. I don't.
- 53:50Speaker 2: If Jacobe gets hurt, he gets hurt. I'm just saying,
- 53:53Speaker 2: if he gets hurt, he gets hurt. But I would
- 53:57Speaker 2: I'd much rather go in in on Wednesday he's he's
- 54:02Speaker 2: the starting quarterback or giving him all of the first
- 54:05Speaker 2: team reps were prepping the entire call sheet around Drake.
- 54:07Speaker 2: May like throwing him in there at halftime to actually
- 54:11Speaker 2: play competitively, not in garbage time like they did last
- 54:14Speaker 2: Thursday night. I understand that we all want to see him,
- 54:17Speaker 2: but myself included obviously, but that's a little bit risky.
- 54:21Speaker 1: The other thing about that, it just feels like a
- 54:25Speaker 1: for lack of a better term, it feels like a
- 54:26Speaker 1: very preseason thing to do. Yeah, And they had their
- 54:30Speaker 1: chance to take the preseason approach, calling it tight out
- 54:32Speaker 1: at the end of that Jets game, and they didn't. Yeah,
- 54:34Speaker 1: So that leads me to believe that they're not of
- 54:36Speaker 1: that mindset right now. So I think it is Milam
- 54:39Speaker 1: Wylett Wyatt MILEM Wyatt Millium at West Virginia really good size,
- 54:45Speaker 1: six six, three seventeen. He's allowed just two sacks in
- 54:49Speaker 1: coming into the season, allowed just two sacks and eleven
- 54:52Speaker 1: hundred career pass blocking snaps. Both of those came as
- 54:55Speaker 1: a true freshman when he was a right tackle. He's
- 54:57Speaker 1: been at left tackle. He was at left tackle the
- 54:59Speaker 1: last two years. It didn't allow a single sack. So
- 55:04Speaker 1: far this year in four games, he hasn't allowed of pressure.
- 55:09Speaker 1: He hasn't allowed a single pressure in under twenty three
- 55:11Speaker 1: pass blocking snaps.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Now the knocks on him.
- 55:15Speaker 1: He gets penalized a lot, and that's probably part of
- 55:19Speaker 1: the reason that those holes and whatever are are further down.
- 55:24Speaker 1: He's also a little bit I don't know if narrow
- 55:27Speaker 1: is the right word.
- 55:28Speaker 2: He's not.
- 55:29Speaker 1: He's built more like a guard than a tackle in
- 55:32Speaker 1: like his torso. Yeah, and I'll be interested to see
- 55:34Speaker 1: his arm length now, doesn't have a big butt, that
- 55:37Speaker 1: what you're saying, kind of yeah. I also I get
- 55:40Speaker 1: I wonder about his arm length. He's he's going to
- 55:44Speaker 1: be a good NFL player because he does have the
- 55:49Speaker 1: raw size and athleticism and experience. He might be a guard.
- 55:54Speaker 1: He might be one of these guys that plays multiple positions.
- 55:57Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember Evan, a guy I
- 55:59Speaker 1: think was last year draft from Pitt Matt and Calves yep,
- 56:02Speaker 1: who kind of was a tackling college but guard he was,
- 56:07Speaker 1: But there were NFL teams in certain schemes that I
- 56:09Speaker 1: think could see him as a tackle, probably right, So
- 56:12Speaker 1: Mylam is a much better player, but that same kind
- 56:15Speaker 1: of guy where there's probably gonna be half the team
- 56:17Speaker 1: seem as a guard half the team, A bunch of
- 56:19Speaker 1: teams seem as a guard, an equal amount of teams
- 56:22Speaker 1: will seem as a tackle. Some teams might try him
- 56:24Speaker 1: at center, like he's just a good player you want
- 56:27Speaker 1: to get out on the field, but he doesn't really
- 56:28Speaker 1: have a position. He's currently projected to be like a
- 56:30Speaker 1: late day two pick for a team that also needs
- 56:33Speaker 1: depth on the offensive line, Like, wouldn't be a bad
- 56:36Speaker 1: guy to bring in. Now, They're gonna have a lot
- 56:38Speaker 1: of other needs, and I don't know that they can
- 56:39Speaker 1: afford to go offensive line twice that high in the draft.
- 56:42Speaker 1: But sirt I get I had him on my players
- 56:45Speaker 1: to watch, so take that for what it's worth.
- 56:47Speaker 2: There you go, all right. Quinn is in Louisiana. Oh,
- 56:49Speaker 2: I've dropped you, Quinn by a mistake. Call back, Quinn,
- 56:52Speaker 2: Sorry about that. Daniel is in California. Let's up, Daniel. Good?
- 56:59Speaker 2: How are you hey?
- 57:00Speaker 4: I'm good. So I'm actually going to be at the
- 57:04Speaker 4: game in San France.
- 57:06Speaker 2: Nice.
- 57:06Speaker 5: That's actually be my first Patriot game. That I'll be going.
- 57:09Speaker 3: So of course I would rather like to see Brady
- 57:12Speaker 3: and drunk, the good old David ones.
- 57:14Speaker 6: But I'm okay with this game.
- 57:15Speaker 4: So my question.
- 57:16Speaker 3: Is is, obviously, you know our offense and now our
- 57:20Speaker 3: defense is struggling, but and I am expecting the game
- 57:24Speaker 3: to get out of hand, just how last week was.
- 57:26Speaker 3: But what certain matchups or strategies do you guys think
- 57:30Speaker 3: the Patriots should focus on to exploit some weaknesses and
- 57:35Speaker 3: maybe pull off the upset this week and I can
- 57:37Speaker 3: take it off there.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Thanks guys, Thanks Daniel. I appreciate the question, and I
- 57:40Speaker 2: promise we're going to get to that. But I did
- 57:42Speaker 2: want to wrap up our thoughts on the on the
- 57:44Speaker 2: last game, and that's like where we're going to go
- 57:47Speaker 2: right after that. So I promise we're going to get
- 57:48Speaker 2: to all that. Let's do three up, three down really
- 57:51Speaker 2: quickly from last week from Thursday. Again. I know it's
- 57:54Speaker 2: a whole week ago and it's kind of weird to
- 57:56Speaker 2: do it, but I like doing this, so we're going
- 57:59Speaker 2: to do it. It's our show, right, we drive the bus,
- 58:02Speaker 2: all right? So I did two and a half up
- 58:05Speaker 2: because this is a tough one for me. I didn't
- 58:07Speaker 2: even know that I'm getting I had a tough time
- 58:09Speaker 2: with this one, but I do want to give some
- 58:11Speaker 2: flowers out and then I have four down right, So
- 58:14Speaker 2: I would sometimes on these types of games, I I
- 58:17Speaker 2: do it one way or the other. So my number
- 58:20Speaker 2: one up in this game was Pop Douglas. I thought
- 58:24Speaker 2: that even though it didn't work, like in a big
- 58:26Speaker 2: picture sense, the strategy of throwing the ball and attacking
- 58:31Speaker 2: through the air a little bit more, especially early on
- 58:32Speaker 2: in the game, didn't work, it was encouraging to see
- 58:36Speaker 2: Pop get to eight touches for seventy eight yards, caught
- 58:39Speaker 2: the crosser from Jacoby Brissett, caught a nice indcut from
- 58:42Speaker 2: Drake May, and late in the game had the cool
- 58:45Speaker 2: scheme touch on the on the pitch play, which I
- 58:47Speaker 2: thought was nice. Yeah, so they've put in an orbit
- 58:51Speaker 2: package orbit motion package. Orbit motion when the receiver goes
- 58:55Speaker 2: behind the quarterback like on an end around, instead of
- 58:58Speaker 2: a jet sweep, which would be in front of the quarterback.
- 59:01Speaker 2: So you're like orbiting the planet, right, Yeah, so you're
- 59:04Speaker 2: going behind the quarterback. Yeah, sure, going behind the quarterback.
- 59:08Speaker 2: They've put the orbit motion package in with Pop, He's
- 59:11Speaker 2: motioned at the snap seventeen times already this season, and
- 59:16Speaker 2: they've done a bunch of cool things off of it.
- 59:18Speaker 2: This is what I'm talking about when I say that
- 59:20Speaker 2: AVP is actually a decent designer. He's just not a
- 59:22Speaker 2: good play caller. This is a cool design like this
- 59:25Speaker 2: actually works, and they've done a nice job with it.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Against Seattle, they hit Hunter Henry on that thirty five
- 59:31Speaker 2: yard screen. The window dressing or the eye candy was
- 59:34Speaker 2: this motion by Pop Douglas This week they ran it
- 59:37Speaker 2: and then they faked an inside handoff and ended up
- 59:40Speaker 2: pitching it out to Pop Douglas and he had some
- 59:42Speaker 2: green grass for a nine yard game. If this is
- 59:45Speaker 2: how they're going to use him, I see a plan,
- 59:47Speaker 2: Like this is a plan. Thank you. You have a
- 59:49Speaker 2: plan for somebody. This is how we are going to
- 59:52Speaker 2: use you. I thought was good. Now they just have
- 59:56Speaker 2: to figure out the rest of everything that's going on
- 59:58Speaker 2: with the offense. But if that's how Pop is gonna
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: be eight for eighty and those are gonna kind of
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: be his contributions to the game, then I like where
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: things are headed with him. So he was my number
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: one up.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Yeah, same with me. Just to see him getting involved. Now,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: I do think there's a difference between or there's a
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: fine line between involving your best players enforcing the ball
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: to players. Yeah, and ideally you want your best player
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: to get touches in a way that elevates the rest
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: of the offense. Yeah, I don't think that's what Thursday
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: night was. I think Thursday night was just getting the
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: ball to force Douglas regardless. And the numbers were good, Now,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: a lot of them were in the second half. I
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: think he had two catches for twenty five yards. Yeah,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: just came on that last Drake may drive. So it's
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: got a rising tide. Lifts all boats, right, it's got
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: to start to benefit the offense in other ways, which
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: wasn't there. And to me, some of the numbers are
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: kind of hollow. But for him specifically, I thought he
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: had a good game.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Yeah, don't hold it against Pop Douglas that he's their
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: best receiver, right And at the same time, don't let
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Van Pelton and the coaching staff off the hook for
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: not involving Pop Douglas just because you might not think
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: that he's Tyree Kill. He's their best playmaker on offense.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: In the passing game, they need to find ways to
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: get him in the ball right like that. That's the
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: bottom line. Just because he's not a number one quote
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: unquote receiver in the league doesn't mean that we can
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: just sit here and say, well, we really need to
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: get Pop Douglas involved. Yes, you do need to get
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: Pop Douglas involved. This team needs Pop Douglas to be involved,
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: so he's gonna have to be involved. He was my
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: number one up both of ours, I think, right, you
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: said who was your number two?
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Christian Gonzalez. Yeah, just you know, was it his best game? No?
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: He allowed officially his first career touchdown. I know some
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: people wonder about the DK Metcalf one last week that
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: was mainly put on Kyle Dugger because Kyle Dugger said
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: to put it on Kyle Duggar. Yeah, this one was
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: allowed by Gonzalez, and honestly, not much more he could
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: have done on the play. Really good throw by Aaron Rodgers,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: who was excellent in this game. But was it five
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: catches thirty five yards a Gonzalez. If you're holding guys
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: like Garrett Wilson to those numbers week in and week out,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: you should be in most games, you're gonna be competitive
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: in most games, especially defensively. So to me, Christian Goanzalez
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: continues to pass tests and he continues to look like
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: he's making that year two jump.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: So I'm glad you brought up Gonzalez because I wanted
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: to soap box the first second on Gonzalez. I'm an
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: apologist for Christian Gonzalez. I'm sorry, I just am. I'll
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: own this. The reason why I'm an apologist for Christian
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Gonzalez is because they have so many issues wrong with
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: their team and their roster. Picking on probably their most
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: talented player just feels so wrong to me, Like he's
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: the one guy that I feel like I can sit
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: there and watch and him, like that's a blue chip talent?
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: Has he realized it yet? Not necessarily, Like he's still
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: a work in progress to an extent as a younger
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: player in this league. But he is clearly physically a
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: blue chip talent. So can we can we give him
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: some time to develop? He's only played seven NFL games.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: I think people forget about that because he's technically in
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: his second season in the league. But he only played
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: three and a half games as a rookie. So we're
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: seven NFL games in I know you know this, but
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: just play with me for a second. The receivers that
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: he has faced in those seven games. Garrett Wilson twice,
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: AJ Brown and a little bit of DeVante Smith and
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: the opener last year against the Eagles, Tyreek Hill, Ceedee
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: Lamb Jamar Chase, DK Metcalf and on Sunday, oh wait,
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: you have Brandon Ayuk coming your way on Sunday. That
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: is a gauntlet. That is an absolute gauntlet. And this
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: is to be fair. He is getting drops Aayuk. Yeah
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: he can't catch. Yeah, yeah, but that is a list
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: Like if you made a list of the top ten
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: receivers in the NFL, how many of the receivers I
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: just named would be on that list? Quite a few,
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: quite a few of them. He's facing some of the
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: best competition in the league. He has not looked out
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: of place. He's not looked overwhelmed by those matchups. Him
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: and Marlon Humphrey are the only corners in the league
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: that haven't given up an explosive yet. Now, if you
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: want to put the metcalf on him, fine, but that's
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: a mental error. That's not a physical error of him
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: getting burned in man coverage. Last thing. He's shadowing these guys.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: He's going inside and outside. He's playing in the slot
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: when Garrett Wilson plays in the slot, and he's playing
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: on the boundary when Garrett Wilson goes out and lines
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: up out wide. This is not SaaS Gardner. I'm just
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: gonna take the right side of the field and the
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: rest of you guys can figure it out. No offense
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: right like, this is not a zone corner. This is
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: a man to man corner. Law reevus to leave like
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: that father. You have Ayuk and you are following him
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: everywhere he goes. That's what Christian Gonzalez has done since
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: day one with the Patriots. Just the list that you
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: just read off Reevius Gilmore law to leave. If you
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: expected him to be that seven games into his NFL career,
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: then your expectations were too high. He's a growing young
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: player in this league. He's been really, really good. He
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: has some reps on film where he has perfect coverage
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: on some of the best receivers in the NFL. And
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: the touchdown that he gave up to Garrett Wilson. I
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: don't mind the gamble there. Your team is down, your
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: offense has done nothing all night long, so he gambled.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: He tried to go for the pick instead of the
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: instead of just covering the receiver. If he picked six,
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: is that then we're all going googly eyes over the
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: fact that he did that. It was a gamble. It
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: was a boomer bust gamble. It busted on that particular play.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: It was also a perfect throw by Aaron Rodgers. So
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: end of rant. I just I feel like, out of
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: all the people that have played Keon White, Christian Gonzalez,
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: to me right now are off limits. Like those guys
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: are doing their job to the best of their abilities
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: as young players in this league. Pick on the guys
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: that are actually worth picking on, not those two. Kobe,
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: just say it you want, no, I do whoever the
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: offensive line, Jacoby said, whoever else you want to pick on,
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: I'm game. They have a lot of issues, So I'm game.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: But Christian Gonzalez has been perfectly fine. All right? Uh
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: one my other half up? Did you have any more
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: were in the.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: Day I was talking about puting, I thought about putting
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: on Aaron Rodgers. He was just really impressive in that game,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: and after he'd kind of struggled the first couple of weeks. Uh,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: the bad Man might be back.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's unfortunate. I was the first couple of weeks
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: and I was dead wrong in everything I talked about
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: that game. Last week, I went off of the first
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: couple of weeks of Aaron Rodgers, and he did not
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: look as nimble as he did on there.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: We were all off, everybody, even even Felger, who's you
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: know mister Packers? Right, I was on with him and
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: he was saying, Rogers is checked out. He looks done,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: he looks like he's quiz.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: He just didn't look like he could move around very
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: well on the on the Achilles, it looked like he
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: was still on Thursday night, he looked like MVP's Aroon Rodgers. Yeah,
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: my half up, because you know I had half up
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Austin Hooper. I thought Austin Hooper actually got open in
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: this game. And it's not his fault that Jacoiber said.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Sailed the pass left, you know, wide left of him,
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: and then he got up. He got he made a
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: catch on a nineteen yard crossing route that got called
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: back because of a penalty. So in another alternate universe,
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: in this game, Austin Hooper has like two or three
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: catches for like sixty five seventy yards in this game.
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: It just happened that, you know, one of them was
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: amiss by the quarterback. One of them gets wiped out
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: by a penalty. He had the screen. He caught a
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: nineteen yard screen that actually counted in this game as well.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: So you put those three catches together, what is that
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: two for seventy, three for seventy maybe three for seventy
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: five if he breaks a tackler or two. I thought
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: he actually got opened down the field a little bit
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: in this game. So I'll give him some flowers. Let's
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: move over to the downs. What did who did you
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: have as your number one down?
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: Sir?
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: So?
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: I didn't know. I honestly didn't know what we were
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: doing up and downs this week. I'll tell you this.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Just the offense. The offense, let me give you one.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: It wasn't good, no, no, but like it's just in
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: no way did that team come out ready to play?
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Always do ups and downs?
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: All right?
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: So I'll do this.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: The offense is number one. Go ahead, I put Alex
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: van Pelt, Okay, I that's fair. When you come out
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: the day after the game, I don't want to like
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: continue to kill him. So when you come out the
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: day after the game and you admit that the play
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: the game plan was not good, you're on the downs list.
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: Like he publicly wore it. To his credit, the plan
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: of going in without establishing any sort of run game
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: and trying to be this play action pass team backfired.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: I understand the thought process behind it, but it backfired.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: So you're my number one down.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll just say the offense, I guess I'll say
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: Alex van Pelt as representative of the offense as a whole.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: I didn't think they had a good game plan. I
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: even think the game plan they had they didn't execute.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: They get executed at a higher level. Would it have
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: ultimately worked, I don't know. But for what they were
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: trying to do, they didn't do well. Couldn't block, couldn't run,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: turn the ball over and have a ton of guys
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: getting open. Jacoby had some misses. I don't know if
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: there's much there to hang your hat on offensively, All.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Right, number two down for me, I'm just gonna go
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: and you can piggyback off of me tackling. So I
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: was gonna say the defense just tackling. Yeah, it's a
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: short week. I'm gonna give him that caveat. They really really.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: Missed Jewan Bentley in this game, and I'll get to
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: that in a second. More that I thought they would,
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: and I thought they werenna miss.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: Him a lot, but they missed thirteen tackles in this game.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: It was very poor fundamental football in terms of tackling,
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: And probably my biggest issue with the defense right now
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: is containing quarterbacks and keeping the quarterback in the pocket,
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: especially on third down. So over the last two weeks,
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: I have here's a staff for you. Over the last
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: two weeks, Gino Smith and Aaron Rodgers on extended plays,
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: which next Gen tracks is four plus seconds to throw right.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: So these plays, you know, Josh Allen Mahomes, apparently Rogers
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: is back to doing this where we're just running around
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: and making plays out of structure. Gino Smith and Aaron
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: Rodgers eight for nine for one hundred and fourteen yards.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: That is twelve point four yards per attempt on extended plays.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: The domino effect that that has, especially on third down,
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: is massive because you should be off the field in
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: those situations. So if you are fundamentally sound and you
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: keep the quarterback in the pocket and you make the
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: tackles that you're supposed to make. Now you're off the field,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: and those drives don't get extended and you don't give
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: up all these extra yards that in fact, because I
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: know one hundred and fourteen out of six hundred doesn't
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: sound like a lot, but it's a domino effect that
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: it has too on the entire game that I'm hoping
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: the tackling improves just organically.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: I mean, you basically gave them sorry to catch up.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: You basically gave them an extra trip down the field, right, So, yeah,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: the tackling you think.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: Will be better.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: Like you said, short week, they were missing guys all that,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: but this wasn't an issue of they got out schemed.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: This wasn't an issue of even I would say personnel.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: I mean it is and it isn't. But it wasn't
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: issue personnel. It wasn't getting out coach, It wasn't getting
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: out schemed.
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: They or not.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: They just weren't ready to play. It was effort plays
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: that just didn't go their way. And I think what
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: hurt is Jilani Tavai try to give him some juice
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: early in the game. Yeah, makes that that hard tackle
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: on Breeze Hall. I don't think that was a penalty.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: It was. It was a very not a wrestling guy,
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: but it was. It was a body slam, but that's legal.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: But he wrapped him the whistle blue and then he bought.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: See and this is what's tough. You can't see on film,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: but like I went back and watched, assuming Amazon had
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: the sound synced upright, Yeah, that whistle like he's already.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: Starting to throw him to the ground when he whistle blows.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: To me, it's if, yes, after the whistle, that's a penalty.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: I don't think that play was after the whistle.
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: Maybe if you were there, it was borderline. I think.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: To me, what what it was was like he was
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: in the grasp, yeah, and and Brisaw was, you know,
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: kind of giving himself up on the.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: Play, very clearly off the ground before the whistle blows.
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I just thought that it was like those
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: are like those little extra yeah pieces of contact at
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: the league. I hear you, and I'm not I kind
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: of thought it was a little bit of a BS
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: call watching live, and that's a big play in the game.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: And I'm not saying I'm not sitting here saying It
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: was the smartest play ever, right, but try to inject
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: a little juice in early. They get called for it
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: and they just never bounced back. They were just the
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: tackling wasn't there, the physicality wasn't there, the effort wasn't there.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: And that's on Jerod Mayo. That's an Amarcus Covington. That's
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: on the players. They just didn't they didn't get off
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: the bus.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think that was another thing that I
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: undersold about this game was how much juice was in
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: that building. And it was Aaron Rodgers' first game back
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: since the injury. They had just come off a big
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: win in Tennessee the week before. That place was was
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: for a Jets game. And I'm gonna throw some Shane
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: at the Jets fans because why not. I haven't been
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: in that building in my career and had and had
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: a real crowd because it's always been Belichick versus Zach
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: Wilson or like something like that. That was a real
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: That was a real crowd. That is prime time. It
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: was Rogers' first game like that was a There was
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: a lot of juice in that building and the Jets
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: played like.
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: It, but match it a Belichick team would have marriaged
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: it like like to me a lot of what that
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: game was. This was one of the first real in
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: season tests for the girod Mao coaching staff. Yeah, short week,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: you lose your left tackle, you lose your captain, middle linebacker,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: you know, uh, defensive one of your best defensive players
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: going in And I get it. It's not easy, but
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: rise to the occasion, meet it, Bill Bellich, I don't
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: know that Bill Belichick wins that game. The team comes
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: out with more effort. The team comes out with more effort.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: And when I say girod Mayo, I mean the coaching
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: staff as a whole. The coaching staff did not rise
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: to meet the challenge of the short week, and I
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: would say they failed that test. And look next year,
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: first Thursday night game. I would expect this game to
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: be a major talking point. As you know, they couldn't
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: get the team ready last year on the short week.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Can they do with this time around?
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: It's a good point. And it's a young coaching staff
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: or an inexperienced coaching staff, and in places where it's
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: not necessarily young, and uh, it was a short week
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: and it looked they looked unprepared.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: They it looked like a coaching staff coaching their first
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: ever game on a short week.
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred percent. All right, A couple more? Yeah,
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: uh number three? Can I give him my third? Just
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: to finish my thing? Yeah?
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: Special teams, offense, defense, specialty. I think I did this
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: once last year too.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: Did I think it was the Cowboys game or the
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: Saints game? That one of those sounds about right. So look,
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: I know the game fell. I thought Barringer was fine.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: Baringer continues to be just the best play.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: It's twenty twenty Jake Bailey vibes where it's like, this
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: guy's the best guy on the team. I know nobody
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: wants to hear it. I know everbody's gonna roll their
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: eyes at it. Bryce Baringer is the best player on
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: the Patriots right now. He just is.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and he was really good five. It was a
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: twenty twenty that Bailey made All Pro by and and Gunner.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Yeah, who you said didn't belong in the NFL camp.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: I knew that was kind of course he did.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: Yeah no, But it was that year where the whole
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: year was like, yeah, they have two All pros on
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: special teams, like there's nothing else.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: To build one.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, so Baringer's really good. Five punts, three
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: inside the twenty, no touchbacks again like a forty four
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: yard net. But now, look, I know the game felt
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: out of hand after about a quarter and a half, right,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: but they come out of the locker room, they go
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: three and out, they punt. It is still fourteen to three,
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: So you're still very much fourteen three run driving in
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: the third quarter is still very much a game. Yeah, Barringer,
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: great kick fifty one yards down to the Jets, thirteen
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: yard nine, real chance to flip the field. Breton Schooler
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: gets right down there, beats the blockers, whiffs on the
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: tackles Xavier Gibson twenty one yard return, and that just
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: it felt like took a lot of air out of
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: the defense. Yeah, and it's the second week in a row,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: because remember this happened against Seattle too.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: It was against Seattle.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: It was right at the end of the first half
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: where they allowed the big return and Seattle gets a
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: field goal gifted to them essentially that they.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: Probably shouldn't have had.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: Barringer's gonna knock some of these balls deep, and you
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: you'd argue he's out kicking his coverage. I think you
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: gotta know what kind of puntery is at this point,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: and you need him to flip the field like that.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: They've got to capitalize on some of these bigger kicks
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: better and not you know, first guy down whiffing on
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: some of these bigger kicks.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: Yeah, as much as I'm not the special teams guy,
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: and I let you handle that, yeah, side of the street,
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: but this team. As much as I hate how this
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: team wants to play, and you know that, but.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: Well, you don't need to be a special teams guy
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: as a defensive coach, would you rather defend a team
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: starting on the thirteen yard line or the thirty four
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: yard line? Yeah, that's that's what I'm talking, right And
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: I and I say this because I just I have to.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: I hate how this team has to win games right now,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: but I still have to call a spade a spade.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: They need to play complimentary football in all three phases
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: right Like they're gonna be a run first offense, which
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: I hate, But they're gonna be a run first offense.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: Uh. They're going to be a team that's gonna need
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: field position and it's gonna need the punter and the
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: punt team to be a factor, and they're gonna need
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: to flip the field, and they're gonna need to put
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: other team on long fields and things like that. All
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: is going to be a thing this team needs to
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: do to win football game.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: That's why it's it down for me, because if you
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: are that team, you can't be missing tackles and punt coverage.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: You just can't do it all right. Number three here
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: Jelani tava and ray Kuan McMillan. This was one of
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: the worst inside linebacker tapes I've ever seen from the Patriots.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: Just soft up the middle, not getting off blocks. Looked
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: a little bit overwhelmed by some things. Missing tackles like
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: Rayqwon McMillan comes in and has Braylan Allen and the
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: whole like very very early in this game and could
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: have made a big play in the game early on,
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: completely whiffs on the tackle attempt. Tavai looked a little
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: bit overwhelmed, looked like he had a more responsibility without
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: Jawan Bentley, maybe a little bit more mic linebacker instead
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: of will linebacker, wearing the green dot, all those types
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: of things. I asked Marcus Comington today about you know,
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: do things change mechanically up front now that Jawan Bentley
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: isn't there, And he said no, that we just have
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: to be better, and I didn't really love that answer.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: I'm not gonna lie to you, and I know that
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: they're going to make little tweaks and like things like that,
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: and they're not going to make necessarily wholesale changes. But
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: Jawan Bentley is a very unique player with the way
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: that he takes on blocks and the way that he
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: plays the run game almost like a defensive lineman that
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: I don't think you can just expect Joannie to buy
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: in ray Kwan McMillan to play the run as well
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: and in the same way that Jawan Bentley does. So
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: I do think it has to change a little bit
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: how you are playing from a front mechanics and a
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: structure standpoint like it just you can't play too high
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: expecting the two gap and get the numbers back that
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: way when you don't have a thumper in the middle
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: of the defense like Jawan Bentley, It's just you're gonna
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: get run on all day, especially by this team coming
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: up on Sunday. If that's how they play the run
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: on Sunday against Shanahan. The Niners are going to run
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: for two hundred yards, so they have to do something.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: It just flashed me back to specifically remember his first
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: year here when he just.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: Really didn't look right.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: And then Bill comes out that offseason when we all
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: expect to buy to not make the team, and it's like,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: this guy's gonna be a crucial part of what we
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: do and we're like what, And then they moved him
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: to the edge and he suddenly became a good contributing player.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Now he's back playing that position he was his first
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: year here in New England, which I think is out
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: of position for him. So hopefully once Talkie gets back,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: you know, there's a little less of that. It kind
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: of hint today that Marte mop who might get some
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: snaps of linebackers, so.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: We get to do this thing again, Evan. But I
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: would devise out a position filling in for Yeah, I'm
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: more on the with you on the the out of position,
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: just asking him to do some things that he he's
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: not necessarily the take on, like the block deconstructor that
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: Jawan Bentley is. He is much more of an athlete,
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: like let's fly to the football un blocked, or let's
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: drop into some space and make plays. He's not He's
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: not a take on linebacker in my opinion. So I
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: don't know if maybe that you just have Raekwon McMillan
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: just kind of run full force into blocks and not
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: worry so much about making the tackle but more so
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: worry about disruption and kind of blowing things up. And
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: then you allowed to Vie to come in and clean up.
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: Like maybe that's the better way to go about things
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: than what they did the other night. I don't necessarily
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: think the green dot is as big of a deal.
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: I think it's more about where he is in the defense. Yeah,
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: like the positional type of stuff. So they were on
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: my list number four down the entire offensive line, Like
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: you have to call him out at some point.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: You've been the one who's been telling me for like
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: two weeks now, the offensive line is not as big
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: of an issue as I think it is.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: I'm glad to hear you say no, it's a big deal. No,
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: it's a big issue. I'm just not willing to let
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: everybody else off the hook for the entire season just
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: because we're the offensive line isn't good, right, Like eventually
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: figure it out, like and not again, not thirty points
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: a game, figure it out, but like, can we not
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: have what we had last Thursday night? Right right? That's
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: all it is. But fifty two point two percent pressure
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: rate on Jacob Brisett in this game, Canaan Wallace, David Andrews,
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: Mike on One who Leiden Robinson all three pressures each,
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: sixteen total pressures allowed in this game. Just in terms
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: of volume, I thought all of them struggled across the board,
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: like Michael Jordan maybe was a little bit out got
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: away with this one one hurry allowed just for him.
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: Wallace obviously a rookie playing out a position in his
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: first NFL game. Not a great spot for him, so
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: I'm willing to give him a break. David Andrews and
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: Mike on Winner need to be better. Like, those are
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: your two veteran guys on the line. Those are the
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: two guys that are starters in this league and belong
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: in the starting lineup, and we're not It's not Trey Jacobs, right,
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: We're not forcing you into the lineup. That's where you belong.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: Those two guys need to be better for this team.
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: I think with on Winn it's just a matter of
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: he he is what he is, a tackle and they've
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: got to get him moved inside guard and he's going
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: to continue to struggle.
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: Trying to tell you all last one just because I
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: don't want people to think I'm leaving letting him off
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: the hook. D Mayo Rod Mayo's got to be a
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: down too. Yeah.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: They weren't all right, so I said, offense, defense, special teams,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: give me a fourth coaching.
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: He's they weren't prepared to play. They weren't ready.
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: They want to talk about this before, but they weren't ready.
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: And that's on the coaching stuff. Yeah.
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: So I don't want girod Mayo everybody to think that
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: girod Mayo at you know all, they won't criticize Mayo Mayo.
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: Uh he he deserves to be on the down list too.
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: They weren't prepared to play. They got out coached. I
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: believe they kind of got out coached for the second
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: straight week. I think them too. Uh So we're starting
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: to see some of the uh the cracks and the
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: foundation of a young coaching staff and a and an
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: inexperienced coaching staff. So those are ups and downs. Let's
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: talk a little bit of Niners. Let's take John here
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: on the phone first and then uh, we'll do the
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: last thirty minutes on San Francisco. What's up, John? How
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: you doing?
- 1:22:57Speaker 6: Hey? How you guys doing good?
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: Good?
- 1:23:01Speaker 6: Good? So you guys actually kind of just touched on it.
- 1:23:04Speaker 6: But I have two points on the offensive line. So
- 1:23:07Speaker 6: my thought process is a little bit with on when
- 1:23:09Speaker 6: who kind of being out of or not out of position,
- 1:23:12Speaker 6: but not at his best at tackle, and you've got
- 1:23:15Speaker 6: a rookie starting at guard next to him, you know
- 1:23:19Speaker 6: what do you have to lose by basically getting on
- 1:23:21Speaker 6: who in his rightful position, either moving the rookie over
- 1:23:26Speaker 6: to left guard or when that so comes back, having
- 1:23:30Speaker 6: him there, and just dealing with one person as a
- 1:23:33Speaker 6: weak spot at left tackle. And then just one other point,
- 1:23:36Speaker 6: I'll let you guys go. I heard Doug Kaide talking
- 1:23:41Speaker 6: about Donovan Smith, the you know, the Kansas City left
- 1:23:44Speaker 6: tackle from last year. I know he probably sucks because
- 1:23:48Speaker 6: he's not signed by somebody, But in a situation that
- 1:23:53Speaker 6: we're in, wouldn't he be better than what we have?
- 1:23:55Speaker 6: And he's just sitting out there, maybe he's not in shape, whatever,
- 1:23:58Speaker 6: it's just it feels like it'd be a worth a
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: shot and have Wallace over at right tackle where he belongs.
- 1:24:05Speaker 6: Just try it out anyway, Thanks.
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: Guy, Thanks John so Uh to the first point they
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: have on right tackle out of necessity, like they just
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: don't have bodies at.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: That I agree with the point, like what do you
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: have to lose by just having the one guy at
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: left tackle? The problem is who you're playing a right guard?
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: You can do with Kiten Wallace, then I'm all for
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: it because I then, yeah, left tackle is probably a
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: big weak spot.
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: If it's gonna be.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: Who even would be the back of you tackle at
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: this point is Trade Jacobs their swing tackle?
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: Is it Trade Jacobs? It would probably be uh, the practice.
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: Squad right Caleb Jones, who's never played in a pre set,
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: who's never played an NFL game at right tackle without
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: you know, I Vederian Lowe's not back, He's still.
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: It's it's both tackles.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: You can't just move Mike and one who back inside
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: and get to one position of question, you need other
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: guys to get healthy first. When those guys do get healthy,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: they should make that move.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: Yeah. If they don't make that move, then I'm going
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: to start to criticize the for not making that movie.
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: Everybody else.
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: They can't right now because guys aren't healthy, like you said,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: But yeah, just as soon as possible.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: I just thought of something really quickly, and then I
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: do want to go forty nine ers. Yeah with your
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: odd Mayo, go ahead. What were you gonna say?
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: I just saw on Donovan Smith. Yeah, oh yeah, watch
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: him from last year once, I mean right now with
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: Darian Low hurt. Yeah, he'd help. I don't know that
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: he's an upgrade over Darien Low at this point his career.
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: I don't Yeah, it doesn't seem like they want to
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: make that move right now. I know, Doug. I saw
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: a tweet, Doug, So if you didn't actually report this,
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: and I apologize, but that the tweet from one of
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: the Patriots aggregators said that Doug said that they're not
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: at this time looking into bringing in any of those
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: veteran tackles, you know, Donovan Smith, David Bachtiari one of
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: those players. My guess is Donovan.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: Donovan Smith will had fifty three pressures and was called
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: for ten.
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: Yeah, penalties were an issue for him.
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: That's those are both excessive numbers.
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: Yeah, so I would. I would just say that those
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: guys are available for a reason, whether it's injury, whether
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: it's that people think Donovan Smith is washed, whether Baktiari's
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: not playing is kind of pseudo retired, right, like, whatever
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: the case may be with all those Uh, there's plenty
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: of teams like Kansas City. As much as we railed
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: the Patriots for not drafting Kingsley, Yeah, he's been benched,
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: and it's just to be like full you know, transparency.
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: He's been benched and Janya Morris started in their game
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: last week at left tackle. Like you don't think if
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: Donovan Smith could play that the Chiefs would call him
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: and say, hey, why don't you come back and play
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: down the stretch for us this year? Like I My
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: guess is that everybody knows stuff about those guys that
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: we know. You know, I'll throw Charles Leno and DJ Humphries,
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: who's coming off an injury to in that category as well.
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: The rest of the league and the people that know
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: more than we do about about what's going on with
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: these players obviously know something about those guys, otherwise they
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: would be on rosters at this point. Yeah, really quickly
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: on Mayo, my big thing about him in terms of
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: head coach in the role in general, is that I
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: look at the head coach as a quality control coach
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: in a lot of ways. Sure, And if I'm jirod Mayo.
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: When they got back into the building, I think it
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: was Monday that the coaches came back after the Thursday
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: night game. When they got back in the building, I'm
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: sitting down and they did talk a little bit about
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: non negotiables, right, And I'm sitting down with a VP,
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: and I'm sitting down with the Marcus Comington, and I
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: I this is what Bill would have done. Bill would
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: have had a list of like four or five things
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: that it's not everything right. It's not like, let's come
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: in this weekend, let's fix everything that's wrong with this team.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: It's four or five really specific things where I would
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: look at my coaching staff and I would say, this
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: is non negotiable, DeMarcus, we need to keep the quarterback
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: in the pocket. This is non negotiable. Can't continue a VP.
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: We need to run the ball. No more of these.
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: You know of your your play actions for now until
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: it starts to work, right, we need to run the ball.
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: It's on him to do those types of things. I'm
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: not necessarily saying that it's on him to fix the
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: offensive line or to you know whatever. It's on him
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: to be the last line of.
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: Defense him to make sure it gets fixed.
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: Right, to say, hey, this is what we're doing along
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: those same lines. If their quarterback play doesn't improve, if
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: I'm drawed Mayo, because i my senses is that there's
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: pushback internally from Van Pelt, Elliott Wolf, maybe a little
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: bit of Ben McAdoo where they're sitting to Girod Mayo,
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: be patient like you're doing with me, right, be patient.
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: His time will come. He's not ready. Be patient. Well,
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: I'm he's not ready, but yeah, we're not ready. He's
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: not ready. It's not ready, whatever you want to call it.
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: But if I'm Drod Mayo at some point in time,
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: and I'm not saying it has to be this week,
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: I'm not saying whenever he feels it's right, he needs
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: to come into the room and he needs to look
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: at Alex Van Pelt and Ben McAdoo and say, Drakes
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: the quarterback, coach him the f up.
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: Right, this was a big question in the offseason, right,
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: who ultimately makes that decision is it van Pelt, isn't Mayo.
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: And I had kind of said at the time my
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: view on it was Van Pelt gives the green light,
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: and then it's up to Mayo whether or not to
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: make the move. Yeah, and then the question is what
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: happens if Mayo wants to make the move before he
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: gets the green light. Here we are, and this is
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: going to be a big test for Girod Mayo and
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: this whole collaborative approach and all that, which I'm not
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: against collaboration to extent, but at the end of the day,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: somebody has to final say Elliot Wolf has it over
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: the roster.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: He doesn't have it over the depth chart, or should he?
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: That should be the head coach?
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: Can Gerod Mayo when the time comes, And by the way,
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: I don't know that I necessarily want him to do this,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: but if this is the best path of action, can
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: he owen of the room put his foot down and
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: say Drake made his the quarterback.
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: It's not gonna be easy to do. It's not gonna
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: be easy to do, but this is his team and
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: he has to go off of his instincts and uh
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: in what he sees with his eyes, and he told
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: us in the summertime, right after the preseason that Drake
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: may outplayed Jacob Brissetta in the summer and the breadcrumbs.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: Are there that Gerad's ready to make the move and
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: Van Pelt isn't if you want to, I don't want
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: to put Elliot Wolf in either side because he just
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: hasn't really openly.
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: Talked about it.
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I think if you want to assume which side
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: Elliot Wolf is on, well, sense right. But you have
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: Gerd Mayo saying Drake's outperformed him, said one my choice
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: to put him in Thursday night against the Jets. Meanwhile,
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: you have Van Pelt saying, yeah, you know, he's still
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: got a lot to work on. He's not ready. Even
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: when he was in there on Thursday night, his footwork
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: wasn't greatful.
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: Yah.
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: Well, like you can kind of see these two guys
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: if you if you go back him. Even even this week,
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: Garrod Mayo was asked about about Van Pelton practice and said,
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: he's been good in practice. That's the kind of guy
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: you want to get on the field. You had Van
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: Pelt on Friday say I think he can learn more
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: from watching than from being on the field, and then
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: basically come out today and say you're starting to see
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: him get better, as if like there's still a ways
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: he needs to go. Yeah, the bread crumbs are absolutely
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: there between Mayo and Van And again I don't exclude
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: Wolf to let him off the hook. I just exclude
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: him because these are the two guys we have quotes
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: from over the last month.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: Right, the bread crumbs are there, Girod Mayo basically saying
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: I want the kid to play, and Alex Van Pelt
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: saying I don't, he's not ready.
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: Yeah, at some point, the head coach has to win
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: that argument, and any real organization, I shouldn't said it
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: that way, and in a well run organization, Yeah, Mayo
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: wins that argument.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: But this is why I think it's difficult. You, Hi,
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: if you're Jared Mayo, you hired Alex van Pelt to
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: be the head coach of the offense, not the offensive corner.
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: The head coach of the offense. We heard that term.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: You hired Alex Van Pelt and Ben McAdoo and TC McCartney.
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: To be the quarterback experts.
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: How does it look if one month into the season
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: you're now telling the experts get the f out I'm
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: doing this, Like, what message does that send to the
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: rest of your staff people in this league talk? What
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: message does that send to coaches you're trying to hire
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: in the future. It's more than just saying I'm the
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: head coach, I want this pulling rank.
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: There's ripple effects from.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: That, which is what I think he's fighting right now,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: and he should consider that. And I'm not saying that
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: it doesn't get to the point where. I'm not saying
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: it will never get to the point where he needs
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: to just put his foot down. It's a lot more
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: than just There will be fallout from that decision, and
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: it can potentially be catastrophic if that's the way he
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: goes about it. Ideally he talks Van Felt into it
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: rather than just goes down the hall and says, it's
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: my decision. It may not be that easy, but you
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: do have to kind of You're not making that.
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: Move in a vacuum.
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: Again, just Van, what does that mean for Van Pelton
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: his future? What does that mean for macadew and McCartney,
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: What does that mean for future coaches? What does that
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: mean in other positions?
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: Or are you going to have other coaches now? Maybe coaching,
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: scared or doing things because they don't want to be
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: in this spot.
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: With Mayo, it's it's.
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: Ideally, it's not a situation you want to be in
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: because ideally everybody's on the same page and you're in
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: a place where you can just put the kid in
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: and everybody's like, yeah, it's.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: The Tom Pelts and I don't and I'm not. I know,
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: I'm railling on him a lot today. Yeah, I just
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: don't think he's ever going to be in a place
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: where he thinks Drake is ready this year.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: I feel like, okay. And so there's give and take
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: in this. You have to be realistic about what the
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: organization wants. You can't if you're Alexually and Pelt allowed
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: to become you versus the entire Patriots organization. And I
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: would imagine at the draft there was some sort of
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: conversation that was had or when Van Pelt was hired,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: even Hey, we're gonna draft somebody third overall to play quarterback.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: We expect him to play this year. We expect him
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: to play. I don't know, maybe the exact date wasn't given.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: And I'd say the same thing for Gerd Mayo. If
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: you told Alex Van Pelt, we are okay with him
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: not playing this year. You kind of can't go and
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: pull rank on him. Yeah, you kind of have to
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: live in the in the bed you made with that one.
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: I doubt that conversation would have happened. I don't think
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: they would have completely closed the door on Drake May
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: playing this year. In fact, I would bet they didn't
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: because if that was truly their approach, there'd be a
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: veteran buffer quarterback here, and Gerd may was very clear
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: yesterday that they're not doing a buffer quarterback. And that
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: would also go to if you want to bring Elli
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: wolf into it. Elliott Wolfe totally has the ability to
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: pull rank on Gerrod Mayo and say we're bringing in
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: a veteran. He's the backup. Drake May is gonna be
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: ineligible on game days. He's gonna be the emergency third, right,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: Elliot wolf has power to do that. He hasn't done it,
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: so I do. I don't think if Pelt's plan is
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: to not play Drake May this year, I think he's
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: alone in that. Even when it comes to Elliot Wolf. Yeah,
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: the question is just do the timelines differ? And what
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: was said about the plan.
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: Going into the season. Yeah, I just I know, I
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: just rammed a little bit. I don't know that makes sense,
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: but I would say my mind's more than just Sorry.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: Last point, Yeah, this is where and you hate this
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: and I honestly kind of hate it too, But I've
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: gotten to the point, Well, we both started our careers
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: very big on We're going to cover the football of it.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: We're not going to cover the politics and the interpersonal
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: part of it. We want to cover the ex and
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: o's and we both still feel that way. This is
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: one instance where I do think you have to consider them,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: and you do have to consider the politics of what happens.
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: If you're Gerd Mayo, you go down the hall and
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: you say, Drake's QB one deal with it?
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: Well, why do you think that as somebody that really
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: does want to focus on the ex's and hoss when
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: I watch the offensive film every single week and I
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: know what's in the garage, Like, why do you think
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: that this is driving me crazy? Because to as a
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: as a a football nerd, I'm just like, there's no
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: way that Drake may is not better than this. I
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: get that there's a bigger picture here and we all
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: understand the bigger picture. And you remind me of the
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: bigger picture every single day when I text you why
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: isn't Drake may playing? But that's where it comes from,
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: is that as a football guy, I just I know
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: that Drake may is a better quarterback than Jacoby Brissett is,
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: and that is a struggle for me and I I
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: believe that Girod Mayo, not saying I'm Girod Mayo, but
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: I believe that Girod Mayo is having the same internal
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: struggle I do too.
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: But now it becomes look, we so they were report
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: the whole and it's obviously kind of a different situation.
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: But last year what happened the head the offensive coordinator
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: kind of got isolated, Yeah, but from the rest of
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: the coaching staff. And you can go back and read
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: the Boston Herald uh kind of report expos on how
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: things went last year between Billichick and Bill O'Brien and
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: the rest of the offense coaching staff like that Drake
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: may or No. If you create essentially a war between
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: Girod Mayo and Alex van Pelt, that's not good for anybody.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: That's not good for Drake, that's not good for rest
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: of the offense. That's not good for the rest of
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: the organization. So Girod Mayo kind of has to be
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: diplomatic and Alex van Pelt to. I don't mean to
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: keep putting on Mayo, but Mayo's said, coach, you got
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: to be diplomatic about this, and maybe you put pressure
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: on Alex van Pelt without outright telling him. Honestly, the
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: best thing that can happen is Drake May put pressure
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: on Alex van Pelt. And I don't mean that by
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: Drake May start in the mouth off. I mean go
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: out there, ball out and practice. Suddenly the other players
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: get talking while you see this guy starting. Because if
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: you get the locker room to want Drake May out
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: there now, the clock's ticking on Alex van Pelt no
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: matter what he wants.
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: We're not gonna that. That's based off of everything that
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: we've heard from the coaches this week especially, but just
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: the rumblings in general, is that he's he's been practicing
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: pretty well.
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: That's for us, And I know you want to get
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: to the Niners. I'm sorry, but for the whole ten
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: minutes we just spent on this, that's what it comes down. Yeah,
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: when does the locker room want them to make the change?
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: Because when that happens, then it's going to happen.
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, h forty nine ers, And then there's
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: a couple of good emails that we can wrap up.
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: Another call too. We got, we got.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: I mean, if it's a guy you hung up on,
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: I think you got to take it.
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: No, it's not, but Q, if you want to call back, Q,
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: I don't know if you heard me, but that was
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: my fault. I dropped you by mistake. Anyways, forty nine ers.
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: I do want to talk a few things about the
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: forty nine ers. Do you have key matchups prepared? Did
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: you do your homework on that or no? Yeah?
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: So I do five things now every Friday on ninety
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: five sports dot Com. It's it's key matchups, but it's
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: evolved a little bit, but I have some matchups in there.
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: People love things like lists, you know, ten observations, ten takes,
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: just call it five.
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: Sometimes it's about the game, sometimes it's about the week
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: as a whole. But I always put a couple of
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: key matchups in there.
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: Okay, so, uh, just really quickly on the forty nine ers,
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: because unfortunately and sincerely. I really really hope Alex, that
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: we are start doing shows soon where the matchup in
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: that particular week actually matters like it used to. I
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: really hope we get to that point. All of you
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: know my love for Kyle Shanahan. I have enjoyed my week.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: I've had some extra time after I've had some extra
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: time to this week. You were in a rough spot
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: on Sunday. I've watched I watched the Vikings game, and
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: I watched the Rams game in full on film and
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: got to watch Kyle Shanahan's offense for like a full day,
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: which was just not only Kyle Shanahan's offense, but also
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: Kevin O'Connell and se So this was just like a
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: fever dream for me.
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: I was having a blast Matt Stafford. I didn't realize
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: you were this high on Matt Stafford.
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: Oh God, he was cooking in that game. I'll best
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: quarterbacks in the league. Yeah, I'll maybe I have some
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: Rams thoughts that I think pertain to the Patriots.
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: I don't know if we'll have also get those in
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: a few weeks.
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. There. Maybe I'll save him then with
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: the forty nine ers. A couple of things I think
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: are important to point out with their offense, and then
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: I'll get to the defense too. Offensively, the number one
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: thing that worries me about their offense is their run game.
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: By a country mile.
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: They are a stretch outside zone run game. They're really
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: become most effective on outside zone toss, so instead of
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: Purty actually reaching out and handing the ball off on
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: the stretch action, he just tosses it out to Jordan Mason,
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: and that has really been extremely effective for them. There
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: are some blocks on tape of Trent Williams and George
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: Kittle just absolutely owning dudes in the run game. They
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: are a very, very physical team. They are a run
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: first team in some respects. They are willing to run
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: the ball. If you don't stop the run game, they
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: will keep running the ball on you.
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: They are a really effective run run operations if it
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: is still stretch. Like McVeigh has transitioned a lot more
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: to duo and to gap, Shanahan has stuck with the
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: stretch for the most part, so they're gonna be stretch
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: run game. In the past, they've been notoriously play action
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: off of stretch run. This year, they're actually only at
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: a sixteen percent play action rate. It's the fifth lowest
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: in the league, and they actually were pretty low in
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: the league last year on play action. So what they're
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: actually doing now is is cans or like a can
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: system where Brod Perdy's getting to the line of scrimmage
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: when they give him a tell, like some sort of
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: motion or shift pre snap to give him a coverage tell.
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: If they have a single high coverage, then he's gonna
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: check into a pass play. If it's too high, or
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: if it's a good run look, then he'll just hand
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: the ball off and run the run play. So instead
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: of doing play action all the time, they are doing
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: a lot more of that, like you know, at the
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: line of scrimmage, we're gonna get into the right play
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: and where he might drop that pass or we might
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: run the football based off of your look. They're very
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: effective at that, and that's where Party's at his best.
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: I believe is just a field general type of stuff,
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: like he's very good pre snap. He gets them into
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: the right plays. We talked about that earlier with Jacob,
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: were said, gets into the right plays. The two keys
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: to me of stopping it. Number one penetration to this
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: stretch game outside zone. The death of outside zone is
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: interior penetration. If you can get your tackles up the
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: field and you can penetrate the badfield, then that they're
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: longer developing. They're trying to get outside. If you get
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: it right up through the middle and you get in
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: up the field on them, that can be a death
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: nil to this system. So vertical, get vertical, get up
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: the field. Penetration on early downs is key. Brian Flores
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: gave them a little bit of a roadmap here. They
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: were really good in Minnesota's defense against this offense. A
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: couple of weeks ago. He would change the picture on
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: Party so pre snap, Party would think it's a single
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: high coverage, you know, post safety up top on the defense,
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: and then post snap it would rotate into his too
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: high structure. And now he's got a pass play on
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: into a too high defense and there's no place to
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: go with the football. So they were really good with that.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: I expect the Patriots to copy that from Brian Flores.
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: Spin the dial a little bit on Purty. Don't let
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: the system beat you make Brock Purdy beat you make
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: him beat you with post snap, with his processing, with
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: his arm. It's a lot like the Patriots game plan
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: against Jared Goff and the Super Bowl and Super Bowl
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: fifty three, and I mean your help, but look, the
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: injuries are going to be a massive, massive part of
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: this game. Yeah, Kittle if he plays, will be limited.
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: Trent Williams, if he plays, will be limited. They won't
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: have Deebo Samuel.
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: They want of Christian McCaffrey, Brandon and I don't know if
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: you saw today, he was like, teams are playing me
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: different this year. Yeah, dude, you're just dropping every pass. Like,
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: I don't know how much you saw of that. I
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: actually meant to pull up his d.
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: Get more, getting more of that number one receiver coverage,
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: you know, because McCaffrey's out, Kittle's been banged up. Debos
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: now out. So my guess is that he's seen number
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: one corners and he's seeing some tilted coverages and dire.
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: Pff only hasn't for two drops. I know that's not right,
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: because I saw him drop at least two balls in
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: that game.
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: You might have had some like sometimes when they're like
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: contested drops or like tough drops a lot on the
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: sidelines and stuff. These were these were easier drop. Anyway,
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: I used to say this with the Patriots a lot
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: that oh hang on, here we go, advance receiving drops.
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: They also have them for oh no, they have them
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: for five Okay, that sounds closer I say Patriots, Like,
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: do you remember that year I think I was seventeen,
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: when like when Gronk put that hit on tre Davius White. Yeah,
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: and everybody was like, just suspend them till the playoffs.
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: It's fine, like, you know, we'll have them healthy. But
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: they were so banged up on offense at that point.
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: They didn't have had home in that year, and it
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: was like, no, Like, at a certain point, the logo
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: on the helmet doesn't mean anything. Yeah, you actually need
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: the players to perform. That's what makes the team good.
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: We know that. Now.
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: That's kind of how I feel about the Niners right now.
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: And that's not to say they're bad. I mean, they
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: still have a lot of good players, but the Niners
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: that this offense, well, they don't have CMC, they don't
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: have Debo. Kittle might be playing hurt, Kittle will be
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: playing hurt. Trent Williams got hurt last week, came back
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: in he was on the injury report with an illness
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: where is he at? They're not bad, but they're not
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: what that team was. So let's say they had the
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: fully loaded offense right at that point, it's just hold
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: on for dear life, and we'd be talking a lot
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: more about fundamentals and just don't allow good plays to
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: become great plays and kind and things like that, because
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: there really is no matchup to pick on where they're
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: at right now. You can, I think the Patriots do
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: have the horses to play some more matchup football with them.
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: Right You're gonna put Christians Auce on Brandon Ayuk and
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: kind of hope he takes him out there. You got
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: to figure out what you're gonna do against Juwan Jennings
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: because they This was something we didn't talk about in
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: the Jets game that where I think the Patriots did
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: get exposed. They somehow got small at corner again and
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: we thought they'd fix this. They're small on the boundary.
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I wonder when talking about this a little bit
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: out of practice. I know he had a rough preseason,
- 1:46:03Speaker 2: but like Marcella's dial, Isaiah bol.
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: Bolden would be the guy that practice. Juwan Jennings big,
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: bigger receiver. Yeah, dk Metcalt he's a big guy.
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: Yeah. And Bolden's played a little bit inside the slot
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: over the summer and Juwan Jennings is going in and out.
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: He's like his split is basically right down the middle
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: of slot. Bolden to me just a good matchup.
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: I give him a look this week, certainly, but you know,
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: you got to figure outw you're gonna match up on him.
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: But you know, if Trent Williams is out, can you
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: use key on white pick on that matchup? Brock Purdy
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: has a little more on his shoulders now, Like I
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: feel like the Patriots.
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: Will have more.
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: More of an ability to pick matchups and pick spots
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: defensively in this game than they would otherwise because of
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: all these injuries.
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you make a really good point there
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: at the end, not to like go on the whole
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: party thing, but it does seem just the way he's
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: been playing this year, that brock Purdy is feeling that
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: there's more on his plate because he doesn't have all
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: of the weapons at his disposal. So he ran the
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: ball ten times last week. He had ten rush attempts
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: against the Rams. They don't that's not how they want
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: property to play, Like Kyle Shanahan wants Rock Party to
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: sit in the pocket and when I tell you to
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: smash be on the controller, you smash b right, Like
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: that's how he wants him to play. And right now,
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: Party is like extending plays and running and like making
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: out his structure throws and like, I don't think that
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: that's what they want him to do, but because of
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: the injuries to the playmakers, they don't really have a choice.
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: If you're the Patriots, that's the one thing that you
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: might be able to take advantage of is if Party's
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: going to try to be the best athlete on the field, right,
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: you might be able to get him sent key on
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: white after Yeah, he might turn the ball over a
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: couple times. That's what happened against Minnesota. He had two
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: turnovers in that game, one fumble in one interception because
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: he's trying to do a little bit too much fumble problems.
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: That's been a thing going back to Iowa State with him.
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: If you can look, he rarely gets hit in the
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: pocket because as a runner, he doesn't have fumble problems.
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: Let me be clear about that.
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: He's actually pretty good at I think sliding, getting down,
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: getting out of bounds, taking care of himself. Going back
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: to Iowa State, he had some trouble with like stripsacks
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: or just holding onto the ball through contact in the pocket.
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: He has Trent Williams.
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: He has that offensive line that hasn't been something he's
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: dealt with a ton in the NFL. If you're the Patriots,
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: you may be able to capitalize on that this week.
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: Yeah. So moving over to the defense. Yeah, their defensive
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: coordinator is somebody whose name I've fumbled all week long
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: because that's how little I know of him before this week.
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: Nick Sorenson is their defensive coordinator. He is a Pete
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: Carroll guy. He came from the Seahawks, was there for
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: years with Seattle. Is now in San Francisco. So he
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: grew up in the Seattle three system, right. He grew
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: up in the Legion of Boom and the zone in
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: the zone system and rush four, drop seven, play cover three,
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: play Mabel, like all that kind of stuff. Brandon Staley
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: is also there, which I know you're gonna pick at.
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: I wonder if that's where some of these problems are
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: coming from. To a less roster in the league and
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: suddenly you're one and two it's a little Matt Patricia,
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: not gonna lie, it's a little bit. It's a little Napatrischy.
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: You were never a stately guy though, either Like, no,
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: you admit that he's not a head coach.
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: No, he had some good game plans defensively when he
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: was with the Chargers. He had a really good game
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: plan for Miami. That team started to copy like a
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: blueprint with the Dolphins. But not in terms of like
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: being a head coach in the league anyways. Defensively, they
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: have played a lot more man coverage this year. They're
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: up nine percent in terms of their man coverage rate
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: this year compared to last year. So one of the
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: things that I do think the Patriots can exploit that
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: the Rams did. The Rams just put two to two
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: at well into foot races. Run run across the field
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: this way, and then run across the field that way,
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: and every once in a while, we're gonna send you
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: a vertical right, and he just ran you know, five eight,
- 1:49:50Speaker 2: one fifty five with the four to three nine. Kind
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: of sounds a little bit like Tomorio Douglas, right, you know,
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: similar kind of players at Wells a little bit bigger
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: in terms of length and like you know, just catch
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: radius and stuff like that, but pretty similar for the
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: most part. So if they get them into man to
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: man coverage, McVeigh spammed the crossers against man to man
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: and they got him on a bunch of those you know,
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: motion to two at well or shift to two at
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: well late into in the in the pre snap, and
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: then all of a sudden you snap the ball and
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: he gets this free release and he's just running across
- 1:50:24Speaker 2: the field against man coverage with the free release. Do
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: some stuff like that, they but they still for the
- 1:50:31Speaker 2: most part, are a zone defense. They still play a
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: lot of Mabel coverage, which is a Cover three variation
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: where the backside defender, the Richard Sherman, he's gonna be
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: locked into the X receiver in man to man coverage
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: and they use Fred Warner to kind of cut off
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: the crossers from like the passing strength. I know that's
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: very technical, but that's that's Mabel coverage. So they still
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: do a lot of that. They still play a lot
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: of quarters, you know, four high across the top of
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: the defense and that kind of stuff. But my guess
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: is is that watching this Jets film from last week
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: and knowing the struggles the Patriots had with blitzing, with pressure,
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: with all that kind of stuff, I would expect them
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: to try to play a lot of man like the
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: Jets did, blitz per set a little bit and challenge
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: these receivers on the outside to win. And I do
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: think that McVeigh gave them some things that they can
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: do to get Pop Douglas in particular, some opportunities. And
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: I would also say Hunter Henry too on linebackers, like
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: they'll give their you know, Devondre Campbell got exposed in
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: that game. They'll put linebackers in man coverage as well.
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: But it's Warner. I'm probably not throwing the ball that way,
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: but it's if it's Devondre Campbell against Hunter Henry, I
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: like that matchup.
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: I would expect them to turn up the heat. I
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: would expect them to turn up the heat on the Patriots.
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: Blitz them, forced Kobe to makeset, forced cover set to
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: make decisions quickly.
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: See how that goes.
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: But they're going to test the Patriots ability to pass
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: block and just block in general. And I do you
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: blame them?
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I just couple of things with the run
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: game for the Patriots we all believe. I think that
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: they need to run the ball, and they need to
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: get back to that identity of running the ball that
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: they had in the first two weeks of the season.
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: This forty nine Ers defense is giving a five and
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: a half yards per carry against duo runs, gap double
- 1:52:20Speaker 2: teams in the interior. Just all you're doing with duo
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: is you're creating Usually duo teams will put like seven
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: guys across the line of scrimmager eight guys across the
- 1:52:30Speaker 2: line of scrimmage, and then you're just creating as many
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: double teams on the line of scrimmage as you possibly
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: can based off of the defense as alignment. And the
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: Rams ran right over this forty nine ers front with
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: duo just right at them, right over them. I don't
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: think you want to go side to side against Fred
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: Warner and Bosa, right Like, that doesn't sound like a
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: good idea.
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: Don't let those Oh yeah, we're going to test what
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: good athletes Boson Warner are they?
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not what you want to be the approach, right,
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: So running right downhill with duo at them is a
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: way to maybe possibly run the football. I also just
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: think the Patriots are best at running duo, so it
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: kind of works out in that sense. Kind of getting
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: over the outside zone game if you can't tell so duo,
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: I think is one way that they might try to
- 1:53:18Speaker 2: do that the Browns go. The Browns won a game
- 1:53:21Speaker 2: in with PJ Walker against this team last year with
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: the Alex Van Pelton Stefanski coaching up PJ Walker our guy,
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: and they ran a lot some toss stuff to the
- 1:53:31Speaker 2: boundary instead of outside zone. They tried to hit it
- 1:53:34Speaker 2: faster to the outside with like cracked toss schemes and
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: things like that. Those hit a little bit quicker to
- 1:53:39Speaker 2: the perimeter, so you don't let Fred Warner run over
- 1:53:42Speaker 2: there as quickly. You know he's coming from the middle
- 1:53:44Speaker 2: of the field, and it hits a little bit faster.
- 1:53:46Speaker 2: So I would expect him early on in this game
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: to run some of those cracked toss plays or some
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: of those toss plays to the outside. Even if they don't.
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: Freak out if you're the Patriots or as a fan, yeah,
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: if those don't work, it's set up that they're gonna
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: run it inside hopefully, right like that. That's what I'm
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: hoping for is the Browns also mixed in one reverse
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: that went for an explosive in that game too, to
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: also get something going horizontal and getting outside the tackle.
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: So early on in this game, I hit him with
- 1:54:18Speaker 2: a reverse, hit him with the toss, hit him with
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: something outside, just to get them thinking about that. And
- 1:54:23Speaker 2: that's when you start to run it up the middle
- 1:54:25Speaker 2: and start to gash them up the middle. That that's
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: what I hope is the plan. This is one of
- 1:54:29Speaker 2: those games where Van Pelt literally has a blueprint from
- 1:54:33Speaker 2: last year with the Browns of how to run the
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: football with a limited quarterback like he literally did it
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: a year ago. So obviously execution is big, but there
- 1:54:42Speaker 2: is something there for them. Is there anything else on
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: the forty nine ers? I wanted to get to Bosa Bosa.
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: I don't want to see Trey Jacobs one on one
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: with Nick Bosa in this game, not once, not once.
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: Leave the tight end and over there. I'm even willing
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: to go six a line and put two linemen on
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: him because that it's that bad of a mismatch. If
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: you're gonna try, if you know you're gonna try to
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: push the ball down a field on the play, just
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: go tackle eligible and put two linemen over him. You know,
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: I put two guys over there. This has got to
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: be And this is another one of those coaching staff
- 1:55:17Speaker 2: things I'm gonna be looking for. Bill Belichick in his
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: time with the Patriots used to have some really unique
- 1:55:24Speaker 2: game plans for players that he thought were truly like
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: Hall of Fame elite guys.
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: He would call them game wreckers, and Drawn Mayo used
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: that term today.
- 1:55:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Do you remember when they played Tony Gonzalez years
- 1:55:35Speaker 2: ago and they like jammed them. Ke to Lee was
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: on him the entire game. Yeah, it was like it
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: was literally like he was a gunner on special teams
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: and they just jammed him immediately with two guys off
- 1:55:46Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage. That's what I'm looking at this week.
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: Obviously in the reverse with Nick Bosa, Like you can't
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: let Nick Bosa take over this game. You just if
- 1:55:55Speaker 2: you do, in my opinion, going back to our whole
- 1:55:57Speaker 2: debate about the line versus the play calling, if you
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: let Nick Bosa take over this game, I'm going to
- 1:56:02Speaker 2: point the finger at the coaching I'm not going to
- 1:56:04Speaker 2: point the finger at Trey Jacobs. It's not his fault
- 1:56:06Speaker 2: that he can't block Nick Bosa. I'm going to point
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: the finger at a VP and the coaching staff if
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: that happens. Is there anything else on the on the
- 1:56:13Speaker 2: Niners you wanted to get to you Before you take
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: these last few things and wrap it up.
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: I'd like to see what happens if the Patriots are
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: down ten to fourteen points in the fourth quarter. And
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: I don't say that's to poke the needle at you,
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: like I really mean it. This is something that the
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: Niners have struggled with. They struggle to close out games.
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and they want to close I'm sure if you're
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: saying Drake may or you were saying that, I wasn't
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: sure me.
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: Well, that would be interesting if it's straight May but
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: because you still obviously have to score to close the gap.
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: But yeah, the Niners want to close out games throwing
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: the ball. They don't want to close out games running
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: the ball. That seems to be exacerbated without Christian McCaffrey.
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: Now they don't know some of their top pass catching
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: options either. But if you have to admit at this
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: point it's a thing.
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's between it and nine after the game Sunday.
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: Close out.
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: Now, it's one thing to close out the Chiefs or
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: the Rams. It's another thing that close out this Patriots team,
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: but they can't close out these games. And if the
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: Patriots keep it close, like, you have to feel good
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: about that. If you're the Patriots, that we're in a
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: ten point game against a team that just puked all
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: over itself last week in this exact same.
- 1:57:14Speaker 2: Sounds like a big deficit. But if you're down three
- 1:57:16Speaker 2: or down one score, let's call it, then I would well.
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: I'm saying, like towards the end of the third quarter,
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: if it's.
- 1:57:21Speaker 2: Ten, yeah, I just don't know if the Patriots offensively,
- 1:57:24Speaker 2: So that's why it's different.
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: But again, you gotta you gotta feel good about that
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: if you're the Patriots, and I'll be interesting to see
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: what happened.
- 1:57:29Speaker 2: Like the Rams and Stafford doing it is one thing,
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: the Patriots doing it is another. I hear.
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: I am acknowledging that, but I'm saying, like, yeah, you know,
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: if it's yeah, if it's a one score game going
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: to the fourth quarter, fine.
- 1:57:41Speaker 2: So it's a problem, and this is a first world problem,
- 1:57:45Speaker 2: Like they're not going to win the Super Bowl because
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: of this problem. But them closing out games is a problem.
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: I know, that there probably are numbers to back you up,
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: but they get too far away from the running game. Uh,
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: their their past game execution really suffers, and crunch time
- 1:58:00Speaker 2: as well, which is my point. Run the ball.
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not talking about when they're down, talking abou
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: when they're up.
- 1:58:06Speaker 2: This is a team.
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: Remember how I came in leading into the Seahawks game
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: and said, you're not gonna be able to take this
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: team to the hill as easily as he took the
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: Bengals to the hill. Yeah, if the Patriots put themselves
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: in position, that's a big if. But if the Patriots
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: put themselves in position, the Niners are a team you
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: can absolutely take to the hill.
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, Yeah, I don't necessarily disagree with you. I
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: can't disagree with you until he proves otherwise. It hurts me,
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: you can tell it hurts me that I have to
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: be critical of Kyle Shanahan in this way. My instinct
- 1:58:39Speaker 2: with all this has always been that when they get
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: into these tight games, and I'm not talking about against
- 1:58:45Speaker 2: the Patriots on Sunday, I'm talking about good against good teams,
- 1:58:48Speaker 2: but I'm.
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: Saying, if you're the Patriots, like you have to have
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: that approach of like, these guys can be had in
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: this situation, Yeah, regardless of if the teams that had
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: them are better than you.
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Just in general though, like talking about the Chiefs
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: in the Super Bowl right rams last week, like these
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: types of games sometimes, what I feel like with the
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: forty nine ers and why I get on brock party
- 1:59:07Speaker 2: in defense of Kyle Shanahan is because in order to
- 1:59:13Speaker 2: win the games at the highest level, again not the
- 1:59:16Speaker 2: Patriots on Sunday, but the Super Bowl last year, in
- 1:59:19Speaker 2: order to win the game at the highest level against
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes and that the bully that
- 1:59:26Speaker 2: is Kansas City right now, you need to have a
- 1:59:30Speaker 2: quarterback and have a passing game that rises to that occasion,
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: like the Super Bowl. First time they lost in the
- 1:59:36Speaker 2: Super Bowl to the Chiefs with Kyle Shanahan, it's Jimmy
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: Garoppolo overthrowing Emmanuel Sanders for a walk in touchdown. This
- 1:59:44Speaker 2: Super Bowl last year, it's the blitz packages from Spagnolo
- 1:59:48Speaker 2: that get to party and he's Frazzles.
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: Goes back to my point, why can't you just run
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: the ball and kill the clock. You don't need a
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: passing game. You need a pass game to get there
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: and get that lead?
- 2:00:00Speaker 2: How many of like? And I don't want to go ten,
- 2:00:03Speaker 2: you know, twelve rounds with you about Kyle Shanahan. But
- 2:00:05Speaker 2: it is forty nine ers week, so we have the
- 2:00:07Speaker 2: house or what the people want?
- 2:00:09Speaker 5: Uh.
- 2:00:10Speaker 2: The biggest thing I would say about that, though, is
- 2:00:13Speaker 2: that a lot of these things happen and it's like,
- 2:00:16Speaker 2: what are you on third and eight? You want him
- 2:00:18Speaker 2: to run the ball, Like a lot of these.
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: Things this great running attack. Why are they getting a
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: third and eight? They're getting the third and eight.
- 2:00:24Speaker 2: Because the other team gets paid too well.
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: No, but a lot of it is either incomplete passes.
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: They're throwing the ball in their sacks and there's penalties
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: and things like that. They don't run the ball when
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: they should late as much as they should late in
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: these games, the clock is a non factor Kyle Shanahan.
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: It seems like to me his philosophy is just score
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: as many points as possible.
- 2:00:46Speaker 2: Period.
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: And that's not to say NFL teams shouldn't be trying
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: to score points. But if you're up two scores and
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: get you have a chance to take two and a
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: half minutes off the clock with five minutes to go,
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: scoring points is not the most important thing in that moment,
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: and that is what I think escapes them.
- 2:01:05Speaker 2: My third and eight.
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: Honestly, in some of these situations, and I said this
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl, maybe run it. Maybe picking up
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: you also have an all world defense over there. Maybe
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: if it is. And they did this last week. They
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: threw like a deep pass on a third I don't
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: remember the exact situation, but they do it. They threw
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: a d pass on a third down late in the
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: game when it's like if you run the ball here,
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: even if you don't get the first they either have
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: to take a time out or it was under three
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: minutes to go, Like they're putting themselves seriously up against
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: it and getting down the field for this last score.
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: And this is where we disagree. I think your philosophy
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: is just light up the scoreboard and all that and
- 2:01:43Speaker 1: control the ball. My philosophy in that moment is take
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: the time off the clock may put put them. You're
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: putting yourself in an uncomfortable spot. Trying to pick up
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: a third and eight is an uncomfortable spot.
- 2:01:55Speaker 2: At some point you have to play the clock.
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: You can you can flip it on them and maybe
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: maybe you're not gonna get it, but if you accept,
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: we're probably not gonna pick this up. But we can
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: make them go down the field with either one less
- 2:02:04Speaker 1: timeout or forty less seconds on the clock. I'll put
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: the onus on them to be uncomfortable. And I just
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: don't think Kyle Shannyan believes in that approach, and it
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: continues to cost him, and unless he's willing to invest
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: in a truly elite quarterback, it is going to continue
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: to cost him.
- 2:02:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's a big part of it. I
- 2:02:22Speaker 2: can't I can't run away from from the fact that
- 2:02:25Speaker 2: they keep on choking games late in the game. It's
- 2:02:27Speaker 2: it's just a fact. The thing with with Shanahan is that,
- 2:02:32Speaker 2: And to your point, when they sometimes he goes for
- 2:02:36Speaker 2: the haymaker, like he goes for the knockout punch. He
- 2:02:40Speaker 2: did it it all going all the way back to
- 2:02:42Speaker 2: Super Bowl fifty one against the Patriots, yep, where he's
- 2:02:45Speaker 2: throwing the ball in those positions because they were what
- 2:02:48Speaker 2: right before the sack that kicked that sacked them out
- 2:02:51Speaker 2: of field goal range. Julio Jones makes the catch on
- 2:02:54Speaker 2: the sideline, the insane catch that he makes on the sideline.
- 2:02:57Speaker 2: They're in field goal range and all they have to
- 2:03:00Speaker 2: do is run the ball and just kick a field goal,
- 2:03:02Speaker 2: and I think they would have gone up like ten
- 2:03:03Speaker 2: points or something like that, ten points like fourn A score. Right.
- 2:03:07Speaker 2: He goes for the knockout and matt Ryan takes a
- 2:03:10Speaker 2: sack and a sack that pushes them out a field
- 2:03:14Speaker 2: goal range. I think there was a holding call in
- 2:03:16Speaker 2: there on Jake Matthews too. The same thing happens in
- 2:03:21Speaker 2: the next Super Bowl against the Chiefs, where he goes
- 2:03:24Speaker 2: for the knockout punch, He calls a deep pass, gets
- 2:03:28Speaker 2: a wide open Emmanuel Sanders, and Jimmy G misses a throw. Now,
- 2:03:32Speaker 2: an apologist for Shanahan like me, is gonna sit here
- 2:03:35Speaker 2: and say, well, if Jimmy G didn't stink, then they
- 2:03:38Speaker 2: would have scored a touchdown there and they would have
- 2:03:40Speaker 2: won the Super Bowl.
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: And I will say, who made Jimmy G the starting
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: quarterback and who decided to let him throw in that situation?
- 2:03:49Speaker 2: There we go that this is our delight. That's what
- 2:03:51Speaker 2: it comes down to.
- 2:03:52Speaker 1: The game the other day, By the way I found
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: the play, it wasn't even a third and long.
- 2:03:56Speaker 2: It was a third and one, so I don't know
- 2:03:58Speaker 2: which play. We might be talking about two different plays
- 2:04:01Speaker 2: the game. The other day they called a pass play.
- 2:04:04Speaker 2: I believe it was third down or it was it
- 2:04:06Speaker 2: might have just been late in the game and it
- 2:04:08Speaker 2: could have basically a first down would have ended the
- 2:04:11Speaker 2: game effectively. And he called a pass play, and the
- 2:04:16Speaker 2: I think it was. Is it David Bell like one?
- 2:04:19Speaker 2: Here it is?
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: I found it, So it's Ronnie Bell Sonny. They they
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: get the they pick up a first down on a
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: traces the two minute warning. Okay, so they the the
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: Rams kicked the field goal to get within three. The
- 2:04:32Speaker 1: Niners get the ball back with one fifty one to go,
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: so the two minute warning is gone. Yeah, the two
- 2:04:38Speaker 1: minute warning has gone. The Rams have one time out left.
- 2:04:41Speaker 1: Here's what they do, pass play Brock Party Scramble, goes
- 2:04:45Speaker 1: out of bounds. Well that's about that's okay, but they
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: call he called a pass play pass play complete to
- 2:04:52Speaker 1: Brandon Nyuk. Pass play incomplete short left, Brandon Nyuk, pass
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: play deep right, Ronnie l on second and ten. On
- 2:05:02Speaker 1: the third and ten, they call another pass play Party scrambles.
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: This time he goes down and bounds the Rams use
- 2:05:07Speaker 1: their final time out. If you just run the ball there,
- 2:05:12Speaker 1: game's over.
- 2:05:12Speaker 2: Okay, so the game's over or sorry, So I think
- 2:05:15Speaker 2: the game is the game is Also that's when it
- 2:05:17Speaker 2: was tied.
- 2:05:18Speaker 1: That's when it so they weren't down, that's when it
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: was tied. So he's trying to go down the field
- 2:05:21Speaker 1: to kick the winning field goal. But at a certain
- 2:05:23Speaker 1: point he'd understand, like, we can't give the ball back.
- 2:05:25Speaker 2: So Ronnie Bell, the wide receiver, is why they open
- 2:05:30Speaker 2: in on that throw. Perdy puts it on his hands
- 2:05:34Speaker 2: and the dude drops the ball, yeap. And because it's
- 2:05:38Speaker 2: the same thing as the Emmanuel Sanders overthrow, right Like,
- 2:05:40Speaker 2: it's the same thing as as all these other instances
- 2:05:43Speaker 2: where someone who's team Shanahan like me can sit here
- 2:05:46Speaker 2: and say, well, if the cock the receiver just catches
- 2:05:49Speaker 2: the ball, then we're not talking about this. And you
- 2:05:51Speaker 2: are saying, well, why make the receiver catch the ball?
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: Right they it's just don't put yourself in that situation.
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: The receivers keep not catching the ball. Julio Jones made
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: that unbelieve once in a lifetime catch, and it's like
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan saw that and said, this will happen every
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: time the dude.
- 2:06:06Speaker 2: The dude's unlucky. That's what you're saying. That's okay. We
- 2:06:09Speaker 2: make our own luck in this world. His luckill, crew, We.
- 2:06:13Speaker 1: Make our own luck in this world. Evan, all right,
- 2:06:14Speaker 1: so does Kyle Shannon.
- 2:06:15Speaker 2: Let's take Mark's call and then we got to get
- 2:06:17Speaker 2: out of here. Mark, what's going on? How you doing?
- 2:06:21Speaker 3: Hey?
- 2:06:21Speaker 6: You guys.
- 2:06:21Speaker 5: Always appreciated you guys taking my call.
- 2:06:24Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:06:26Speaker 5: So I was on with Mike Reese the other day
- 2:06:29Speaker 5: on ninety eight five in Sports so and I got
- 2:06:32Speaker 5: some good intel on him on a kid that I'm
- 2:06:35Speaker 5: really interested in, Caleb Jones.
- 2:06:39Speaker 6: I said, you.
- 2:06:39Speaker 5: Can't teach side. The kid's a left tackle. I'm wondering,
- 2:06:42Speaker 5: why isn't he out there? He's been on the team
- 2:06:44Speaker 5: now for a couple of weeks. So we picked up
- 2:06:46Speaker 5: off the wave a wire and the only thing I
- 2:06:49Speaker 5: can think of is his feet work?
- 2:06:52Speaker 6: You know, what is it about this kid?
- 2:06:53Speaker 5: And I figured i'd ask you, Weven, because you're at
- 2:06:55Speaker 5: practice all the time. I mean, is this kid legit?
- 2:06:57Speaker 6: Like he's got the five?
- 2:06:59Speaker 4: Why isn't he out there?
- 2:07:01Speaker 2: Uh? Because he just has size? Mark and I don't
- 2:07:04Speaker 2: mean to be snarky with you, and thank you so
- 2:07:06Speaker 2: much for the call. But he's he's a big body,
- 2:07:10Speaker 2: there's no doubt about that. Other than that, on tape,
- 2:07:14Speaker 2: he doesn't show much outside of just being Trent Brown massive.
- 2:07:20Speaker 2: You know, like I get it, we all it's I
- 2:07:23Speaker 2: made the joke the other day. It's it's like an eclipse, right,
- 2:07:26Speaker 2: you just think, just put big dude in front of quarterback. Right.
- 2:07:30Speaker 2: And I'm not trying to pick on Mark. I understand
- 2:07:33Speaker 2: where the philosophy, but on film he doesn't show much.
- 2:07:37Speaker 1: You're talking to somebody who wanted to see tackle fall
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: get a lot more minutes for the Boston Celtics a
- 2:07:41Speaker 1: few years ago. Because he can't teach size. You're you're
- 2:07:43Speaker 1: big on that in basketball, you can't, Yeah, you can't
- 2:07:46Speaker 1: your rebound like put the seven foot three guy under
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: the hoop basketballs.
- 2:07:51Speaker 2: It must. It must drive you nuts that Christaps Porzingis
- 2:07:53Speaker 2: hangs out of the three point line. It must.
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: I severely underestimated Chris tops porzing is his game because
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I realized earlier he was as good exactly,
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: I didn't realize he was as good on No ideally
- 2:08:04Speaker 1: you get a seven to three guy that can do everything.
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: I didn't realize how well rounded his game was.
- 2:08:07Speaker 2: He can do everything.
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: When it comes to Caleb Jones, like would I maybe
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: try him against or would I maybe try him over
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: trade Jacobs because of that size, there's an argument to
- 2:08:18Speaker 1: be made now this week, I think it's more about
- 2:08:19Speaker 1: speed than size when you're facing a guy like Bosa,
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: and I.
- 2:08:22Speaker 2: Thought trade Jacobs athletically, Trade Jacobs reminds me, and I
- 2:08:27Speaker 2: know this is not like trying to keep it realistic.
- 2:08:31Speaker 2: He reminds me a little bit of Calvin Anderson, just
- 2:08:33Speaker 2: in terms of his athleticism and like that. Yeah, he
- 2:08:36Speaker 2: moves well, like that's sort of like the call mark
- 2:08:39Speaker 2: of his game.
- 2:08:40Speaker 3: Uh.
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: And he bought had some really nice box in the
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: preseason in space, you know, getting out in front of
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: runs and that that's what you need in the game
- 2:08:47Speaker 1: this week, specifically against the forty nine ers. You know,
- 2:08:49Speaker 1: I'd like to see I will admit I would like
- 2:08:52Speaker 1: to see Caleb Jones get a chance.
- 2:08:53Speaker 2: Yeah, but not if Fiderian Low is healthy.
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: And this is a tough matchup for him because he's big,
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: But that's kind he's big.
- 2:09:00Speaker 2: Yeah, in terms of the practice squad guys. They have
- 2:09:04Speaker 2: been traveling a handful of practice squad guys every single week.
- 2:09:08Speaker 2: Some of that might be injury protection, there's no doubt
- 2:09:11Speaker 2: about that, but there's also some guys that have just
- 2:09:13Speaker 2: been traveling in general.
- 2:09:14Speaker 1: And that can be they want guys staying. You know,
- 2:09:17Speaker 1: this is what it's like on a game day. This
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: is our operation because they want those guys, especially this year.
- 2:09:22Speaker 1: We have so many road games early there's not a
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: ton of chances to see it. Okay, I didn't mean
- 2:09:26Speaker 1: to cut you off, but I assume what you were
- 2:09:28Speaker 1: gonna say. Caleb Jones is one of these guys who's
- 2:09:29Speaker 1: been traveling. Yeah, that tells me that they are invested
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: in his development, where Like it's not off the table
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: that he plays at some point.
- 2:09:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think he's a be all end all
- 2:09:39Speaker 2: answer it left. Yeah, Caleb Jones, I know Brian Hudson,
- 2:09:42Speaker 2: Mike Reeves reported what traveled with the team, Joe Giles, Harris,
- 2:09:46Speaker 2: Kevin Harris, like these those guys have been traveling a
- 2:09:49Speaker 2: decent amount from the practice squad to the point where,
- 2:09:52Speaker 2: you know, I don't get any tips of who's being
- 2:09:55Speaker 2: elevated because there's too many guys. So you know, that's
- 2:09:58Speaker 2: that's what's going on at that I just really quickly
- 2:10:03Speaker 2: is one last question and then we're gonna wrap it
- 2:10:05Speaker 2: up here. I've been going for like two hours. Might
- 2:10:08Speaker 2: be like the longest show we've done. I know, I know,
- 2:10:09Speaker 2: but I think this is a good question. This is
- 2:10:11Speaker 2: from Brian. Uh. He says that he understands that people
- 2:10:17Speaker 2: are tiptoeing around the David Andrews drop off. I use
- 2:10:23Speaker 2: that term. I don't. I don't know if I want to,
- 2:10:26Speaker 2: but I did because of who didn't you know, consummate
- 2:10:29Speaker 2: pro veteran guy gonna be in the Patriots Hall of Fame.
- 2:10:33Speaker 2: I would assume someday a really good player for this team. Uh,
- 2:10:38Speaker 2: but you know, he Brian says, don't be afraid to
- 2:10:42Speaker 2: talk about the fact that he hasn't played as well
- 2:10:47Speaker 2: this season. His past protection has dropped off a little bit.
- 2:10:51Speaker 2: These last two years really started last year where he's
- 2:10:55Speaker 2: dropped off in pass pro. He still grades out really
- 2:10:57Speaker 2: well in the run game, but pro has been a
- 2:11:00Speaker 2: little bit down. I would say the last two years
- 2:11:03Speaker 2: the one defense because you got a defending guy like Dkay,
- 2:11:07Speaker 2: the one defense I would say with David Andrews is
- 2:11:09Speaker 2: that if he had stable guard play right, Like, how
- 2:11:12Speaker 2: much of this is that David Andrews is in the
- 2:11:14Speaker 2: middle of this line and just holding on for here.
- 2:11:16Speaker 1: He asked to do so much. Yea, Look, I'm not
- 2:11:19Speaker 1: gonna say he's the player who was in his prime.
- 2:11:21Speaker 2: He's not.
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with you, there has been a notable
- 2:11:24Speaker 1: dip there. But I let's see him in the again,
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: Let's see him with actual talent around him.
- 2:11:30Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, if he has like City and Anu right
- 2:11:33Speaker 2: next to him for like eight games down the stretch
- 2:11:35Speaker 2: this year and they aren't a good interior, then I
- 2:11:39Speaker 2: would start to have questions about you're drafting his successor,
- 2:11:43Speaker 2: which I would probably do that anyway. But yeah, Yeah.
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: The other thing about David Andrews, which is I don't
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: want to say it's a reason not to criticize him,
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: but almost makes his performance a moot point. Yeah, they
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: don't have another center on the roster now, but Brian
- 2:11:57Speaker 1: Hudson might be their backup center. Bryan Hudson, who is
- 2:12:00Speaker 1: a rookie who's never played an NFL game, who we
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: don't really know about, wasn't with the team in camp
- 2:12:05Speaker 1: and Nick Leverett who's guard. So even if David Andrews
- 2:12:08Speaker 1: isn't playing well, it's gonna have to be really, really
- 2:12:12Speaker 1: ugly before it becomes worthwhile to make a change. And
- 2:12:14Speaker 1: again that's not necessarily in defense of him. Maybe goes
- 2:12:17Speaker 1: back to Elliott Wolf again, but.
- 2:12:19Speaker 2: Yeah, about time with knowing what is David Andrews' fault
- 2:12:25Speaker 2: and what is it the fault of you know, he's
- 2:12:28Speaker 2: got a rookie guard on run side and Laden Robinson
- 2:12:30Speaker 2: he's got a revolving door or like a practice squad
- 2:12:33Speaker 2: elevation at left guard, and we did like, well, how
- 2:12:36Speaker 2: much of it is just that the line is a mess,
- 2:12:38Speaker 2: and how much of it is d and.
- 2:12:39Speaker 1: We and we and again we have an opportunity to say,
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: even if it is Andrews and I I generally default
- 2:12:44Speaker 1: to saying, you know, if there's a miscommunication, I assume
- 2:12:47Speaker 1: David Andrews was right, and I think he's earned that right.
- 2:12:49Speaker 1: But even if he is struggling, you know, we can
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: look at We could look at Chukes of Corp for
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: it and say, okay, play and play Caden Walls. We
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: can look at it at Leidon Robinson struggling and say Okay,
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: City Soul.
- 2:13:01Speaker 2: Will come back or play Michael Jordan.
- 2:13:03Speaker 1: You really can't do that with David Andrews because maybe
- 2:13:07Speaker 1: if Jake Andrews was healthy, but he's not, so you
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: can't have that conversation.
- 2:13:11Speaker 2: We're leaven with the date we brought on that one.
- 2:13:14Speaker 2: He's the center and then we're going I don't feel
- 2:13:16Speaker 2: it's not a bad center.
- 2:13:17Speaker 1: No, And I don't fault them for that. Everybody knows
- 2:13:19Speaker 1: how I feel about the left tackle situation. Yeah, that
- 2:13:22Speaker 1: one's coming from a mile away. I don't fault them
- 2:13:25Speaker 1: for trying to bank on. If I'm going to bank
- 2:13:26Speaker 1: on a guide, I'll go down banking on David Andrews.
- 2:13:29Speaker 1: I have no problem with that. I'll sleep fine at
- 2:13:32Speaker 1: night knowing I put my trust in that guy.
- 2:13:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so we just went two plus hours. I think
- 2:13:36Speaker 2: I'm gonna because how could we not get bogged down
- 2:13:40Speaker 2: by a Kyle shanahana baby.
- 2:13:41Speaker 1: We didn't even get into you being a Morgan Wallen fan.
- 2:13:45Speaker 2: Now, I don't even know why that's a thing, because
- 2:13:48Speaker 2: I said I liked one song.
- 2:13:50Speaker 1: Guy, No, that's not how you said it. You're you're
- 2:13:53Speaker 1: you're I'm constructing the tape.
- 2:13:55Speaker 2: I I in my older age, my music taste is
- 2:13:58Speaker 2: shifting slightly, and nowadays I want some like chill music
- 2:14:03Speaker 2: to listen to. And uh, post Malone is now a
- 2:14:06Speaker 2: country singer. Apparently, I feel a little bit better about
- 2:14:09Speaker 2: listening to post Malone because it's rap adjacent, because he
- 2:14:12Speaker 2: used to be a hip hop artist. So I feel
- 2:14:14Speaker 2: it a little bit. So you're dipping your.
- 2:14:16Speaker 1: Toe in and that's fine. And I'm sitting here offering
- 2:14:19Speaker 1: to help you on this journey. You say you want
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: chill music.
- 2:14:21Speaker 2: I'm more than.
- 2:14:22Speaker 1: Help me, help you, evan, help me help you only
- 2:14:26Speaker 1: go on post Malone.
- 2:14:27Speaker 2: See you say that, but you would have never even.
- 2:14:29Speaker 1: Gone post Malone a year ago. And now you're just
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: just I'm here. I'm here when you're ready to talk, Okay.
- 2:14:35Speaker 1: I will help you on this journey. I will help
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: open up a whole new musical world for you. Morgan Walland,
- 2:14:40Speaker 1: by the way, is a pretty extreme what way her cultured?
- 2:14:44Speaker 2: In that one song I can post to, I do
- 2:14:48Speaker 2: not I think you did. I think you did. You
- 2:14:50Speaker 2: were surprised by what you I listened to? What's like
- 2:14:53Speaker 2: his other big hit, The Couple? I don't know? I
- 2:14:56Speaker 2: don't listen to Morgan Wallen. There was one I listened
- 2:14:59Speaker 2: to that.
- 2:15:00Speaker 1: As long as it wasn't Cover Me Up because that.
- 2:15:03Speaker 2: You know me though, I'm like, I like to my
- 2:15:06Speaker 2: guilty pleasure is like top forty pop music, like you know,
- 2:15:09Speaker 2: like Taylor Swift like that. That's my guilty pleasure and
- 2:15:12Speaker 2: I'm I'll admit it. And if Morgan Wallin's on the
- 2:15:16Speaker 2: Spotify Top forty playlist and I do listen to that, Okay.
- 2:15:20Speaker 1: If you're gonna listen to cover Me Up, listen listen
- 2:15:22Speaker 1: to Jason Isbell version and maybe maybe there's a little
- 2:15:25Speaker 1: more depth there than you realize. Maybe you go beyond
- 2:15:27Speaker 1: the top forty, you find something you like when you're
- 2:15:29Speaker 1: ready to have that conversation. I'm here, it's all I'm saying.
- 2:15:32Speaker 2: One last thing about this and then we really have
- 2:15:34Speaker 2: to go. Uh, Sabrina Carpenter doesn't do it for me.
- 2:15:38Speaker 2: You know, I'm like a big girl music artist like
- 2:15:41Speaker 2: Ariana Grande back in the day, Taylor Swift. I'll listen
- 2:15:44Speaker 2: to that kind of stuff. I really don't see it.
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: There's just that one song, Espresso that's everywhere that I've heard. Yeah,
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: I get why she's popular. Not my thing, but I
- 2:15:53Speaker 1: totally like she's incredibly talented. I very much understand why
- 2:15:56Speaker 1: she's popular, A ton of respect for her music.
