Latest / The 405 Payroll / What Entry-Level Work Really Pays in Oklahoma City
Transcript
- 0:13Quick test.
- 0:14What do you think a decent entry level job pays in Oklahoma City right now?
- 0:18Just a gut number.
- 0:20Uh, fifteen an hour?
- 0:22Maybe sixteen if somebody's feeling generous.
- 0:25That's what I assumed too.
- 0:27Then I looked at a ZipRecruiter page for OKC jobs, and, um,
- 0:31it says the 25th percentile is $44,500 a year.
- 0:35That's about $21.40 an hour.
- 0:38The median is $61,500.
- 0:42Wait, the bottom quarter starts at twenty one forty?
- 0:45That sounds off.
- 0:47Fair.
- 0:48It's one job board's math, and they call everything below that line outliers,
- 0:52so I'd hold it loosely.
- 0:53But take the gap between your sixteen and their $21.40.
- 0:58That's $5.40 an hour.
- 1:00Over about 173 hours a month, that's roughly $934 in gross monthly room.
- 1:06For a renter, that's, that's a whole car payment, or most of a rent check.
- 1:11Okay, that I can picture.
- 1:13So where are the actual jobs?
- 1:16Start with a Glassdoor listing.
- 1:17SSC Services for Education is hiring a full time Administrative Assistant at Moore
- 1:22Public Schools, 1500 Southeast 4th Street.
- 1:25Fixed pay, $21.63 an hour, Monday through Friday.
- 1:29Fixed.
- 1:30So no, no guessing on the paycheck.
- 1:33Right.
- 1:33And the listing says they offer same day pay, plus a benefits package with medical,
- 1:37dental, vision, and a 401K match.
- 1:40The requirement is three years of admin experience.
- 1:43It doesn't mention a degree.
- 1:44Applications are online only.
- 1:47Three years is not nothing, though.
- 1:49And I'm gonna push on this.
- 1:51School district office work, calendars, expense reports, minutes for meetings,
- 1:57that's a lot of bureaucracy.
- 1:58I'd take warehouse overtime over that any day.
- 2:01Okay, but overtime is, is the thing that gets cut.
- 2:05You talked last episode about that 3 PM to 1:30 AM swing shift.
- 2:08Great when the hours are there.
- 2:10When they trim the shift, your month shrinks, and, um, your sleep schedule already
- 2:15paid the price.
- 2:16Hmm.
- 2:17So you're saying the boring schedule is the benefit.
- 2:20Same hours every week.
- 2:21You can plan a rent date around it, a childcare pickup around it.
- 2:26The pay doesn't swing.
- 2:27That's worth something, even if the office is dull.
- 2:30Fine.
- 2:31Dull with a steady paycheck, I'll allow it.
- 2:33What if you don't have the three years?
- 2:35Indeed has an ALDI listing for part time cashiers and stockers in OKC.
- 2:40Starting wage $18.00 an hour, and the listing shows step increases.
- 2:45$18.50 in year two, $19 in year three, $19 in year four, then $20 in year five.
- 2:52Part time though.
- 2:53Part time means, what, twenty hours?
- 2:55Fewer than 30 hours a week, per the listing.
- 2:58And stockers have to be able to arrive as early as 5:00 AM.
- 3:02Five AM.
- 3:03Me, the former morning show guy, saying that's rough.
- 3:06But you're done by afternoon.
- 3:08That frees up school pickup, or a class.
- 3:10Which brings us to the next piece.
- 3:13Francis Tuttle Technology Center in OKC charges career training tuition at $3.00 per
- 3:19clock hour.
- 3:21So a career major with 1,000 hours costs $3,000.
- 3:25That's from their cost page.
- 3:27Three dollars an hour.
- 3:28Like, for school.
- 3:31I keep doing the math backwards.
- 3:32The math is just hours times three.
- 3:34A 600 hour program would be $1,800.
- 3:38Their program list has Advanced Manufacturing, with tracks like instrumentation and
- 3:43process control technician, at Portland and Reno.
- 3:46Machining, with a CNC machinist major, is at Portland.
- 3:50Out of state is double, by the way, $6.00 an hour.
- 3:53And you pay it how?
- 3:54Out of pocket?
- 3:55Pay in full, federal aid or scholarships if you qualify, or a payment plan with a
- 4:01down payment.
- 4:02I can't promise which fits you.
- 4:04Those are their listed options.
- 4:06Okay.
- 4:07So that's the long game.
- 4:09What about the short game?
- 4:11Like, rent is due Friday.
- 4:13Talento Logistics has a ZipRecruiter posting for a FedEx Ground Alternative Vehicle
- 4:18Program delivery driver in OKC.
- 4:20You deliver packages using your own vehicle, $140 a day.
- 4:25A hundred forty.
- 4:27So two days is, um, two eighty.
- 4:30If two days are offered.
- 4:32The posting doesn't say weekends, so I'd ask before counting it.
- 4:36And your own vehicle means your own gas and wear, which, uh,
- 4:39that $140 doesn't account for.
- 4:42Right.
- 4:42Gross isn't take home.
- 4:44Got it.
- 4:45Now the serious one.
- 4:47Catholic Charities in OKC runs emergency rent and utility help.
- 4:51Their OKC metro application opens online Mondays at 8:30 AM.
- 4:56The form closes after they accept six clients, then reopens the next Monday at 8:30.
- 5:03Six.
- 5:04Six people a week, in a whole metro?
- 5:06That's what the page says.
- 5:08And funding is limited, assistance isn't guaranteed.
- 5:11You'd need proof of income, photo ID, a past due notice with your lease,
- 5:15and an intake with a case manager.
- 5:17It's once a year per household, three times in a lifetime.
- 5:21So it's a stopgap, not a plan.
- 5:24Exactly how they describe it.
- 5:26The Community Action Agency of Oklahoma City also lists rent and mortgage
- 5:30assistance.
- 5:31Their number is four oh five, two three two, oh one nine nine.
- 5:35Okay, here's my worry.
- 5:36People read a list like this, and they're working fifty hours already,
- 5:40and they're fried, and nothing happens.
- 5:43I've been that guy with the tab open for a week.
- 5:46So make it tiny.
- 5:47What's the one move?
- 5:49Before five o'clock today, one of two things.
- 5:52Submit the Moore Public Schools application, if you've got the experience.
- 5:55Or call the Francis Tuttle cashier at four oh five, seven one seven,
- 6:00four two two four, and just ask how tuition works for a program.
- 6:04Five minutes.
- 6:06That's it.
