- 0:00Speaker 1: Going up.
- 0:00Speaker 1: It's just you're constantly wondering if you're going too hard and if you're going to die.
- 0:04Speaker 1: So, like they say, it's the ultimate mental battle.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Is that what keeps bringing you back, year after year?
- 0:12Speaker 2: The ultimate mental battle?
- 0:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't care what racers show up, even if somebody shows up better than me.
- 0:17Speaker 1: You know this is a test against yourself.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Everybody that's out here is doing it and everybody's testing themselves, and it's great.
- 0:23Speaker 3: It's called America's Ultimate Challenge.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Each year, over 2,500 runners flock to Manitou Springs to challenge themselves against the mountain known as Pike's Peak.
- 0:32Speaker 3: This year, runners from 46 different states and eight foreign countries have come.
- 0:37Speaker 3: They all start here and make their way towards the clouds.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It's time.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
- 2:06Speaker 2: We are live, then.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Alumni of the race.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Mr Brian Whitfield what's up, man?
- 2:07Speaker 2: Hello, james, thanks for having me, man.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Oh, dude, this is amazing.
- 2:09Speaker 2: When I thought of what I wanted to do for the preview episode, I was scrolling through the Rolodex and you were the first person that came to mind, because I knew you weren't racing it this year, and you've had some stellar performances in the last few years.
- 2:19Speaker 2: You know a lot about this race.
- 2:20Speaker 2: So, in order to do it proper justice, I think you were, hands down, the greatest candidate to have on to do this.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Thank you, sir, thank you, thank you.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Yeah, man, how's it going?
- 2:29Speaker 4: By the way, I'm good, I'm good, life has been good back in the school year.
- 2:33Speaker 4: So working lots, teaching middle school and loving life, yeah.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Nice man, Any races on the horizon.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I got the trail marathon championships.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Uh, the national championships up in cable wisconsin is it the berkey?
- 2:48Speaker 4: One, yeah, the berkey um, and then I'll do the moab trail half marathon championships in november as well.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Awesome man, so you're, I could see.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I could see the gears turning.
- 2:57Speaker 2: It sounds like me like you're getting ready for possible worlds run next year.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Yeah, trying to trying to get some national titles under my belt.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Get my second and third national titles would be pretty cool and then move into next year.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Focus on worlds.
- 3:09Speaker 4: They still haven't released qualifying lists.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Planning for next year has been interesting, but hopefully that list comes out soon.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Did they usually announce it like this far out?
- 3:20Speaker 2: I feel like I guess last year, yeah, or last time around it was.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I like this far out.
- 3:25Speaker 4: I feel like I guess last year, yeah, or last time around, it was, um, yeah, I mean I'm not part of the committee or anything, but typically I think it's, uh, at least a year ahead, so that people can make plans and travel accordingly, you know yeah, that makes sense.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm kind of hoping.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I was really excited this year.
- 3:37Speaker 2: We finally got like a us mountain running champs at one of the cirque races, so it'd be nice to for like the up down or you know something like that.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Oh my god yeah, I just did my first cirque race and the atmosphere was electric julian, carr and, uh, the whole like on cirque series team or whatever it was.
- 3:54Speaker 4: It was awesome.
- 3:55Speaker 4: So getting mountain champs at cirque is so fitting for us, I think would be dope.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's the thing, like it's just a lot, a lot to it.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Good atmosphere, atmosphere, lots of people, and it just I don't know that short course they always come up good courses, you know.
- 4:09Speaker 2: So so yeah, man, we're here to talk about the Pikes Peak Ascent.
- 4:13Speaker 1: What an iconic race dating back to.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Well, it's kind of interchangeable.
- 4:18Speaker 2: You can argue 1938 or 1956, 50, 38 was technically the first ascent, if you will, but to bar camp, that was the only um, they did not go further than that.
- 4:30Speaker 2: And then 56 was the first actual ascent to the um, to the top.
- 4:35Speaker 2: So pretty crazy, pretty cool.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Um, lots of history with this race, one of my personal favorites as well.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Uh, for those of you who are unaware of the Pikes Peak ascent, that's 13.32 miles with a total elevation gain of about 7,815 feet.
- 4:49Speaker 2: So for those of you, um, not in America, that's 2,382 meters.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Topic out at Pikes Peak, the top of the race, which is really interesting to me because I didn't know this until I was doing some research into it.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Know this until I was doing some research into it.
- 5:06Speaker 2: So the actual summit of Pike's peak is 14,115 feet, um, 4302 meters, but the actual race tops out at 14 and fifth 1450.
- 5:12Speaker 4: That's correct, right?
- 5:13Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just below the summit, so you kind of finish on the East side there and, uh, the true summit is, um, just a little bit West of where the race finishes, and it's, it's uh, it's pretty cool yeah, what a crazy race, dude.
- 5:26Speaker 2: You've got some history with this race, so you ran it in 2022 and 23, correct, correct, and finished 12th and 22 and 8th and 23 and, arguably I know I always say this every time we talk arguably the most competitive sub-ultra race on american soil.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I think it still is.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I don't know, that might change this weekend, uh, with headlands.
- 5:46Speaker 2: And then, uh, what's going on at mammoth trail fest and the later on this week, uh, conflicting weekends with the ascent marathon.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Um, so, yeah, it's pretty, pretty wild dude very cool um, any, any interesting, any interesting storylines you think about the ascent for for these days, any, any, anything popping off for you that kind of pops out to you.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I think the first notable thing this year is it's not a golden trail series event, so it has, um a little bit different draw for the elite athletes coming in Um, but I think that the core basis of people that want to do this race is still there.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Um, the value of doing the Pikes Peak marathon or ascent is still huge for a lot of people, so it's definitely going to draw in some, some crowds and, uh, I think there's over a thousand people in the marathon and are actually just under a thousand people in the marathon and about 700 people in the ascent.
- 6:37Speaker 4: So it's going to be a huge race this year, as always, so it's going to be fantastic.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's, it's.
- 6:45Speaker 2: It's crazy, it's uh and especially last year, man, like going into this year it is going to be.
- 6:49Speaker 2: It is going to be a different and unique atmosphere, but I think it's going to be exciting nonetheless.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Um, yeah, last year everybody knows the course record went down.
- 6:57Speaker 2: You got a firsthand site to kind of see it, kind of you were a few hundred feet below, but yeah.
- 7:05Speaker 2: So Remy Bonnet set the course record last year 2023, ran two hours 20 seconds, if you will, lowering the course record from Matt Carpenter that he set in the marathon in 1993.
- 7:17Speaker 2: That was two hours one minute and six seconds.
- 7:21Speaker 2: And then the great and powerful Kim dobson, in one of the most stunning races that I've ever uh followed um was in 2012 uh broke the women's course record and ran 224 58, which is so fast.
- 7:35Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Um, yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 2: So very, very interesting, very cool.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Um, yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 2: So some of the storylines I have too man are, I think, more so field related.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Um, some of the big names will be out there this year.
- 7:48Speaker 2: It's exciting.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Joseph gray is looking for his fifth uh finish, or finished fifth one, excuse me.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Um.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Ali mac is also going to be a late entry to this race and she's will be racing the ascent um looking for.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I think this would be her third win.
- 8:03Speaker 2: I think this would be her third one.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure about that.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Um, and it's going to be interesting.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Anime flint's also in this race, who took second place back in 2017.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Um, so it's going to be a fun little duel at the front between anime and ali mac should be fun there.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Um lots of competitive entries this year.
- 8:20Speaker 2: We've got the likes of kieran nay returning um.
- 8:24Speaker 2: We're gonna see joe demore, seth demore, uh the brother tandem, uh, who ran at the university of colorado.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Um, some big names in the sport we're gonna be seeing uh jeff kuno, um benjamin townsend.
- 8:39Speaker 2: On the men's side as well, we'll get into a bunch more of the uh the interesting names that have popped up on the men's side and then the women's side, some names that kind of stand out to me rachel rudell, uh britney warley, um kristin johnson, cassie southern lynn so a lot of returners from last year um and from races that are prior.
- 8:56Speaker 2: They're looking to kind of make that impact.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Um, maybe ladies that uh, especially on the women's side.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I think it's making for a really interesting race, because we had some athletes that maybe finished in that 15th through 25th, maybe 30th range in Golden Trail Series races, which are some of the highest competition in the world, coming back for this year.
- 9:15Speaker 2: That's not a Golden Trail Series race, so a lot of them are looking to make an impact and probably sneak into that top 10.
- 9:20Speaker 2: So pretty cool man.
- 9:22Speaker 2: It's exciting.
- 9:25Speaker 4: It's going into that top 10, so pretty cool man it's exciting.
- 9:27Speaker 2: It's gonna be a fun year at pike's peak, oh it's gonna be awesome, yeah, so I'm trying to think of what else uh let's get into.
- 9:31Speaker 2: You know, one of the things I do want to talk about too not that I'm gonna bouncing all over the place, but just because we're gonna have a lot of um, not just athletes, but just friends and family listening to this um, one of the things I do want to talk about is just some of the age stations and like temperatures, things like that.
- 9:45Speaker 2: For the race day, it's supposed to be cooler.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Finally, we're getting a cold front, which I'm excited for, uh, especially because I'm gonna be there talking and announcing and it'll be.
- 9:54Speaker 2: It'll be fun to uh to be in a jacket for once, because it's been so toasty down in manitou.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Um, temps of this start line range 60 degrees, 40s, forties to sixties, and then on the summit it's obviously going to range from 35 to 55 degrees, um in that range.
- 10:09Speaker 2: When you ran it last year, there was snow at the top.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Yeah, there was about two inches of snow that accumulated on the top and then throughout the day it's slowly melted, but definitely still had snow once I was above a frame.
- 10:21Speaker 4: So it was a unique challenge.
- 10:23Speaker 4: But having colder temperatures did help down low and it kept, you know, kept the ability to climb up because you're you're refreshed, you're cool, you're not sweating as much.
- 10:33Speaker 4: It's a benefit for a race like this, especially because it's east facing.
- 10:37Speaker 4: You're just getting cooked by the sun on your back.
- 10:39Speaker 2: So toasty, yeah, yeah, it's, it's, yeah, it's such a unique race man.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Toasty, yeah, yeah, it's, uh, it's, yeah, it's such a unique race man, such a unique course.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Um, let me ask you guys did you ever use, utilize any of the aid stations when you were on course, or no, did you just bring your own stuff?
- 10:50Speaker 2: I?
- 10:51Speaker 4: I did not.
- 10:51Speaker 4: I had a two, eight milliliter or no eight ounce bottles in my hands, uh, with some scratch in it, just some calories and electrolytes, um, no gels.
- 11:00Speaker 4: I just had two, two bottles of of drink mix and uh, got to the top, and I had practiced that before, so my fueling was pretty dialed.
- 11:09Speaker 4: But the aid stations are, you know, if you need them, they're there, and it's crucial that you're staying hydrated and your electrolyte balance is all good so that you can, you know, make it up the mountain.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah, dude, I didn't know there was that many of them.
- 11:24Speaker 2: So six aid stations.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Some are full service, some are fluid only, some are water only.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Um, a lot of them.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Top of the W is a 3.1 miles.
- 11:33Speaker 2: There's an aid station, another one at 4.3 miles, at no name Creek, another one on Bob's road at 5.3 miles.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I know the big one is at bar camp that everybody looks for at 7.6.
- 11:48Speaker 2: It's another small one at a frame at 10.2 and then at 11.9, just before the finish, or not.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Well, you still got some more dying to do, but at at circ is the last one so yeah, um, yeah, it's, it's.
- 11:58Speaker 2: It's a really well well done race, really well staffed, and uh, yeah, definitely keep a lookout for those aid stations.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Um, dude, if you're ready, I'm ready.
- 12:05Speaker 2: You want to get into talk about the women's field?
- 12:07Speaker 2: Let's do it, man I can't wait all right, I'll let you take it away.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Let's do it all right.
- 12:11Speaker 4: So just kind of looking at the starting list here presented by pike's peak on their website, there's some really interesting people posted and if you look, it's a lot of colorado locals.
- 12:22Speaker 4: I mean, like dominant, dominant Colorado.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Uh, you just scroll down the list and it's it's a lot of Colorado people.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Um, we do have a Mexico athlete.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Um, she is coming in from Coyo Topec, mexico, um 31 years old, and her name is Maria Jolie Vela.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Uh, excuse my pronunciations, but she's actually seated to do quite well and, uh, I'd be really interested to see how she does.
- 12:48Speaker 4: Interesting um, a couple sleepers on here besides the names we've already mentioned are shania barbash, from montana, um, and she looks like she's got a couple of the races under her belt and, um, yeah, I'm sure she'll do well here and you know, coming from Montana, that mountainous state, uh, definitely going to line up well with what's in Colorado for sure.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Yeah, she took second at the grand traverse 40 mile in 2022 and then 16th at the Moab half marathon um in 23 as well.
- 13:19Speaker 4: So definitely, definitely one to look for in your top 10, top five picks there.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Yeah, also another notable entry that kind of brings in a bunch of talent, young talent is the Western trail running team out of Gunnison, colorado.
- 13:35Speaker 4: They're bringing in their men and women's team, so there's a ton of athletes from Gunnison and Crested Butte listed here.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Sydney Peterson, you have a whole contingency coming out there from gunnison valley and a lot of young ones looking to make a name yeah, totally early 20s and they're just gonna be.
- 13:54Speaker 2: I'm sure they'll fill up that top 20, top 10 list I forget what podcast I was talking on, but, like dude, I was just chatting about you.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Taylor stack hereade, michael.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Like dude, there's just so many people that have come out of Western, so it's just crazy.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I think we mentioned this earlier when you and I chatted about a year ago.
- 14:12Speaker 4: It's pretty, you know you're surrounded by mountains and the only thing to do up there is, you know, drink beer or go run in the mountains.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Most people run in the mountains like every day, or get out and mountain bike or you know some form of recreation, and it's uh, it's a great place to do it.
- 14:29Speaker 2: So it is, it is, yeah, just incredible.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Yeah, A lot of Colorado Springs locals in here Amber Schaefer, Kelly Williamson, uh, Elizabeth Tucker all notable Colorado Springs locals.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Um, and it looks like it's going to be a pretty fast year, despite not having the same level of competition as a usual.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Uh, we still have some really very fast women that are going to be pushing the front.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I uh, I agree, and actually something I wrote down for when we get closer to the end I kind of for the first time in this, like this racing series or any of the racing series I've done, I wrote down like a guesstimated men's time that I think, and I guesstimated women's time.
- 15:08Speaker 2: So when we get to the end I'll say them and I'll be curious to see, like if you raise your eyebrows at me or if you, uh, if you have a similar kind of a similar feeling.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I'd love to hear it.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Um, I think it's always interesting to see the time fluctuation year to year.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Last year was an anomaly, um, but typically there's a.
- 15:29Speaker 4: There's a usual range of where this race kind of falls just because of you know how difficult it is.
- 15:31Speaker 4: There's such a narrow window of finish times for that front front end that, uh, yeah, I'm sure your ideas and my ideas line up pretty well dude, so I had mark tatum on.
- 15:41Speaker 2: It was really interesting.
- 15:42Speaker 2: He really went into the whole barometric pressure situation and how that plays a role so much into kind of just how it's going to feel at the top.
- 15:51Speaker 2: It could feel like 15,000, 16,000 feet or it could feel like 11,000 feet, so it depends.
- 15:56Speaker 2: It's something I have not looked into.
- 15:58Speaker 2: It'd be something as we get closer to, I guess, pay attention to.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Did you ever look at anything like that before your races?
- 16:03Speaker 4: I've never looked at it before my races, but I know that, uh, joe gray and Kieran and I, one day we're doing a workout and we were all talking about it and just the, the specifics, uh, of this race are so unique.
- 16:16Speaker 4: The specific challenges you face, starting at about 6,500, going up to 14, your, your body is changing, you know almost 8,000 feet in altitude, and just the way you react to that is insane.
- 16:29Speaker 4: So getting down in the minutia of talking about barometric pressure is probably one of those things that separates, you know, the goats like Remy Bonet or, um, matt Carpenter or, uh, kim Dobson, from from the from the other, you know, from the peoples that don't have records up here.
- 16:48Speaker 4: So that's uh, that's crazy detailed it is such.
- 16:51Speaker 2: So, yeah, I just love how people yeah kind of get into the nitty-gritty and the technical aspects of it, like that it's very unique.
- 16:59Speaker 4: It's so nerdy, I love it.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah uh, who else do you have kind of mixing it up?
- 17:04Speaker 2: Uh, as far as females go in your top, I was looking at britney warley.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Um, I might have said her name already.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Britney warley is interesting character as well.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Shook 10th in 2021.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Uh, ran 312 22, yeah, 312 22.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Um, she also ran the gardens of the gods 10 mile this year and took fifth place against like the likes of, like sarah ghoul and a couple other ladies.
- 17:27Speaker 2: They're going to be competing on the marathon side, so pretty stout.
- 17:32Speaker 2: She's also a former triathlete, pretty speedy as well and has some some good, some good stuff to back it up.
- 17:39Speaker 4: So yeah, just just looking here at the list, I see alana mori out of naples, florida.
- 17:43Speaker 4: So that's, that's your hometown area.
- 17:45Speaker 4: They're bringing some Floridans up to altitude.
- 17:48Speaker 4: She's actually seeded very fast, so she has a predicted time of under three hours, so she could definitely be a contender for one of those top spots.
- 17:56Speaker 4: And then Emily Lane, north Carolina female, coming in with another high seed there.
- 18:04Speaker 4: So one to look for and I think it'll be interesting.
- 18:08Speaker 4: We got a utah gal, casey, sutherland.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Yep, um, she'll probably do well, do you have any, uh any, bait on her?
- 18:15Speaker 2: yeah, so she took 30th in 2022.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Um ran herself, uh, 310, 06, sorry.
- 18:22Speaker 2: She ran 30th in 2022 and then took I I'm sorry, took 26th in 2023.
- 18:26Speaker 2: So she improved on her time and ran three, 10, oh six in 2023.
- 18:31Speaker 2: So pretty speedy girl.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Um, like I said, it's like there's a bunch of these athletes that kind of ran that 20, maybe like 17th through, like 30th position last year and then you just like the year prior when it was a golden trail series race, and just to have the ability to come back in a lesser competitive field, I think a lot of these ladies are just going to be competing for, you know that, 15th through 10th place or top 10 spots.
- 18:55Speaker 4: No, I could see like if you have a 30th place finished um last year, you could move up to fifth place, honestly, just based on the way that this field is shaken out and how many incredible athletes were here, uh, previously.
- 19:07Speaker 4: So I'm sure that there will be some some shifting of, uh, changing of the guard up there yeah, yeah, do we want to do?
- 19:15Speaker 2: you want to do some women picks?
- 19:16Speaker 2: I think we could do top five or we can do top three.
- 19:19Speaker 2: I'd be interested in doing either.
- 19:21Speaker 4: It's up to you what you would prefer uh, let's go for top three, okay, um, I think my number one right now it's gotta be Allie Mack.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Um, she's she's racing out in headlands this weekend, so she'll be coming off of a a headlands um a good, uh good surge in her fitness Probably, you know, anytime you have a competitive race like that, you come in the next week and as long as you're rested and healthy, she should be, um she should be hungry and fit to race on home turf.
- 19:49Speaker 4: So I'm sure she'll um be fighting for that type top spot if things line up for her.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Uh, number two I would love to see miss anime Flynn get that second spot.
- 20:01Speaker 4: Um, I know she's had a couple, maybe a two year journey coming back from a major hip surgery or something like that.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Um, so she's she's also um coaching my best friend, kieran, so he's uh, he's been stoked with her coaching ability and the things that she's brought into his training.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Um, and I know she implement implements those same philosophies into her own life.
- 20:22Speaker 4: So she's definitely fit and ready for a good race and she's got the results to back it.
- 20:27Speaker 4: That third place spot that's a tough one.
- 20:33Speaker 4: I don't know as well.
- 20:33Speaker 4: I'm going to give it to man.
- 20:38Speaker 4: I know, dude, I'm going to give it to the young gun, the who's.
- 20:43Speaker 4: No, no, I'm going to give it to Sarah Wagner, the local here at uh out of Parker.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Okay, oh, I like it, dude, I like it.
- 20:51Speaker 2: What's what's like her background.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Um, I'm not sure, but I know she's.
- 20:55Speaker 4: If she's living in this area, she's definitely got, um, you know, exposure to the course and she's, um, you know, close to the mountain so she can get up there and train, and I think that that's really important to be able to have that access to the trail.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Cool, cool Dude.
- 21:10Speaker 2: I like it.
- 21:10Speaker 2: We almost have pretty similar, if not identical, top three.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Uh, I'm same thing with me.
- 21:15Speaker 2: I'm going to have to go with Ellie Mackin first, um.
- 21:22Speaker 2: So I just had to value Mac on the podcast.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Little beta here, so she's not racing headlands this weekend.
- 21:25Speaker 2: She is.
- 21:25Speaker 2: The goal is now shifted to pike's peak.
- 21:27Speaker 2: She signed up for the double.
- 21:29Speaker 2: She doesn't know if she's going to do both um and this was a very kind of a late entry, just as of last week, which is exciting.
- 21:35Speaker 2: So, just off the heels of her occ performance, where she took top 20 at occ um, I think she's she's very hungry and very determined to come back to the trails that she loves.
- 21:47Speaker 2: I think this area is home and she treats it that way.
- 21:50Speaker 2: So it's going to be fun to see Allie Mack back and up at the front and Allie dude.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Allie races so aggressively.
- 21:58Speaker 2: I think it's one of my favorite things about her.
- 22:00Speaker 2: It's going to be really fun to see her and Anna Flynn, just like Duke this, out for for the win.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Um, some interesting facts on Allie took first in 2000, um and 14.
- 22:13Speaker 2: She also took first in 2021.
- 22:15Speaker 2: So she'd be looking for her third win here.
- 22:16Speaker 2: She took fourth in 2022 and 12th in 2023.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Her fastest time on this course is two hours 33 minutes 42 seconds, which is so fast, jesus Christ, it's fast.
- 22:28Speaker 2: 22 Allie, in 2022, ran 239.40.
- 22:32Speaker 2: And her slowest time on the course was actually in 2023.
- 22:35Speaker 2: So last year she ran 253.19.
- 22:38Speaker 2: So probably went out insanely hard and maybe there was blow-ups there.
- 22:42Speaker 2: I actually didn't get a chance to ask her about 2023, so, but still, even though if she runs 253, she's still very much a contention for the dub.
- 22:52Speaker 2: In second place, I'm going to go with anime flynn.
- 22:53Speaker 2: She took second in 2017, running 243 14.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Dude, I gotta be honest with you.
- 22:58Speaker 2: I love anime flynn like one of the coolest humans.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Um, I had an opportunity to get to know her this year.
- 23:03Speaker 2: We had her on the podcast and I've talked with her a bunch.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Um, she is going to be racing and she seems to be very fit and ready to rock and roll for this race.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Um, yeah, like I said, I think it's.
- 23:14Speaker 2: It's going to be somewhere between her, her and Allie's race to kind of dictate where it's going to go.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Um, I think anime is path to victory in this race.
- 23:22Speaker 2: It's going to be just staying consistent, believing in that confidence and just cause I think something like Ali is very hard to race in a lot of ways, maybe for the women's side, very upfront, because Ali is so aggressive.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just maybe staying within yourself and kind of hoping Ali will either come back to you or just running your own race, you know, cause if you get caught up in her race, I don't know how that's going to look.
- 23:43Speaker 2: In third place, I'm going to go with Rachel Rudell Took, second at the Moab Half Marathon in 2023 and first at the USF 10K Champs in 2023 as well.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Speedy athlete and the USATF 10K Champs I'm sorry, that was the Above the Clouds Ultra or Above the Cloud 10k.
- 24:03Speaker 2: That was last year which you uh, you ran yourself a great race there too oh boy, yeah, that was a tough one.
- 24:09Speaker 4: I was like right after pike's peak and I was just exhausted, thought I'd jump in and uh, mostly for the donuts up in uh, yeah, it's my favorite donut shop dude woodland park there.
- 24:18Speaker 4: What's it called?
- 24:19Speaker 1: I don't know oh man, donut mill, that's it, that's it did you ever get the maple one there, always, always the best.
- 24:26Speaker 4: I love it, yeah, so good excuse to go get some donuts over at the uh above the clouds 10k I agree, um, with rachel.
- 24:35Speaker 2: One final note on rachel, I think, just because there's not a lot of information on her and just trying to do some digging, uh, her path to victory and I wouldn't even say her path to victory, it's her path to contention in a lot of ways is how is she going to perform at high altitude?
- 24:49Speaker 2: What's going to happen when you get above a frame and you're for more, for less, dying like how, how's your body going to react?
- 24:56Speaker 2: Um, because this is a long race.
- 24:58Speaker 2: You know, this isn't moab, this isn't a 10k, this is, this is much more painful.
- 25:03Speaker 4: It's such a different mix of uh, muscle combination, muscle groups as well, just your hip flexors and your glutes and the quad dominant.
- 25:10Speaker 4: You know you're, you're running uphill the entire way and it's a very specific type of fitness required.
- 25:16Speaker 4: But I could see all three of those picks.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I could see that coming yeah, it's gonna be.
- 25:21Speaker 2: I think the women's race is gonna be very interesting, I think.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Like I said, I think the the front two or three will be dictated and be very fast and I think I'd say fourth through 15th is gonna be, I think, really fun to follow along yeah, a bit of a toss-up yeah, so a lot of major players that could find their way up in there yeah, no, for sure, for sure, all right.
- 25:40Speaker 2: So what do you, uh?
- 25:41Speaker 2: What do you got for?
- 25:42Speaker 2: Let's move on to them.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Actually, before we skip over to the men, do you have anything else to add to the ladies, or is that it?
- 25:48Speaker 4: um no, I'm just, yeah, just excited to see how it shakes out.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Yeah, okay cool, all right.
- 25:52Speaker 2: So on to the men.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Dude, what do you?
- 25:54Speaker 2: Uh, you, you threw some good names at me, so I was really impressed by a lot of the information, like just the digging that did, cause there was people that you brought up that I was like what I didn't even know.
- 26:06Speaker 4: So some research.
- 26:07Speaker 4: Um, I also just, I know a lot of these people and a lot of these athletes racing, so, uh, that helps.
- 26:12Speaker 4: But, um, I, I was considering myself, uh, doing the race, but not for me this year.
- 26:18Speaker 4: I haven't been focused at altitude as much.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Uh, but not for me this year.
- 26:20Speaker 4: I haven't been focused at altitude as much.
- 26:22Speaker 4: I've been focused on that championship season.
- 26:23Speaker 4: So, making sure, yeah, but looking at the start list, I had some familiarities with the people in here and there are some interesting characters in the men's race.
- 26:32Speaker 4: I think there's a lot more returners in the men's race from previous years than there are in the women's, so that'll be an interesting play into the final.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Um, you know, in the standings.
- 26:43Speaker 4: So, yeah, just to get it started here again, we have, like I said, the western trail running team is coming, so josh eberly and his uh band of trail runners is going to be there, which means lots of young talent out of the gunnison valley, crested butte area and they're going to be rocking up front, I'm sure, yeah, um, starting it off with, uh, the hometown hero, joe gray I think it's hard to skip over his name in any race list.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Um, you know he's, he's 40 years old now, so he's technically competing as a master, but he does not act like it so you'd never know.
- 27:18Speaker 4: He never count him out and, um, yeah, he's, he's definitely going to be pushing, pushing the front.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Um, you mentioned this earlier Seth Damore and Joe Damore, uh, colorado native boys that are just, um, just beasts in the mountains, so they're definitely going to be ready for the race and they're going to be, they're going to be fighting for those top spots.
- 27:38Speaker 4: Um, one of my buddies, uh, kieran Nay, uh, he's, you know, young guy out of the Gunnison Valley as well.
- 27:46Speaker 4: He's not on the trail team anymore just cause he's, you know, he graduated.
- 27:48Speaker 4: He's alumni technically, um, but he's definitely fit him and I did a couple of workouts leading up to this and he's looking really good, so I'm sure he'll be uh hungry for a top spot.
- 27:58Speaker 4: Um, yeah, you got a couple other names in here I could throw at you.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Yeah, let's hear it, dude.
- 28:13Speaker 4: All right.
- 28:13Speaker 4: So interesting character that I saw coming in here is Rajpal Panu, who is a Denver local living in Denver and he's got a 216 marathon at the CIM marathon, so he's typically a long trail guy.
- 28:21Speaker 4: I think he's won the javelina 100k.
- 28:23Speaker 4: He's a, you know, a six hour nine minute or something like that on the road 100k.
- 28:30Speaker 4: He was like one of the fastest 100k road runners like in the past.
- 28:35Speaker 4: He's on like the top 10 list for the world times.
- 28:38Speaker 2: It's something, something incredible but he's tried to go for, like the.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Yeah, he's tried to do 100 miles like the.
- 28:42Speaker 2: The jackpot ultras he goes after as well.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Dude, the dude like is interesting.
- 28:47Speaker 4: We don't have a lot of people like him in our sport, I should say no, he's, he's very much focused on the road stuff or focused on that like fast, long trail things, which is a kind of a awful place to exist.
- 28:59Speaker 4: You know it's hard, it's hard on the body, but it takes discipline and it takes really, um, really strong, strong, uh strong body physique and everything like that.
- 29:08Speaker 4: So he's he's a dedicated to his craft kind of guy and, uh, he'll show up fit, I'm sure, cause he's he's very specific and intentional with his training.
- 29:17Speaker 4: So I think that's that'll suit him well here at Pike's Peak.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Is he still with Hoka?
- 29:20Speaker 2: that's that'll suit him well here, at Pikes Peak?
- 29:23Speaker 1: Is he still?
- 29:23Speaker 4: with Hoka.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, he is.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Oh, wow, definitely Um.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Another stud that I saw coming in here as a young guy, uh, who trains with the army.
- 29:31Speaker 4: His name is Evans Kabat Um, he's 28 and he is, uh.
- 29:33Speaker 4: If you look him up on world athletics, he's got some fast times on the road and on the track.
- 29:38Speaker 4: Uh, it'll be really interesting to see him translate those skills over to the trails, uh, and running up Pike's peak.
- 29:44Speaker 4: Um did some research on his Strava and he's got some, got some times where he's been running up there and, um, in training he's been putting up some solid time, so it'd be really interesting to see how he plays in what the competition um, you know what his racing strategy is.
- 30:00Speaker 4: I don't know if he's ever done a trail race, so this will be a really interesting test for him yeah um, can't wait to see him race how's he gonna?
- 30:08Speaker 2: the interesting is like, really, like you said, like, how is he going to take it out?
- 30:11Speaker 2: Like, is he going to like most of these road races where you have to put yourself in the race immediately?
- 30:16Speaker 2: You can't wait for someone to come to you, you know, is he going to try to get out there ahead on the w's and how?
- 30:22Speaker 2: What is that going to look like?
- 30:24Speaker 2: So yeah, there's a lot of strategy to that.
- 30:26Speaker 2: I'm very curious to see how these guys are going to play.
- 30:29Speaker 4: So yeah, I and then I could be wrong on this, but I believe him and joe gray when they're doing track workouts, um, they work out with the uh army team, sometimes with, um, hillary boar and some of the other uh uh WCAP guys here in town.
- 30:42Speaker 4: Uh, I believe they train together.
- 30:45Speaker 4: So Joe and Evans could be could be uh planning to run this thing together and play off of each other.
- 30:50Speaker 4: But you know, don't quote me on that.
- 30:53Speaker 2: So, yeah, I'd be fun to see, uh them versus the Demore brothers up front, what that's going to look like.
- 30:58Speaker 2: That would be fun, um yeah.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Uh you, you what that's gonna look like.
- 31:06Speaker 4: That would be fun.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Um, yeah, uh you, you want to want me to jump into?
- 31:07Speaker 4: Yeah, jump into it.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I got more, but I want to hear yeah.
- 31:09Speaker 2: So one of the other ones I picked up on um buddy of mine, jeff kuno, ran 237 16 in 2022.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Uh, he's fit.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Literally yesterday he just won the bull in the woods half marathon is just a uh kind of a tune-up race.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Uh, to kind of get ready for this.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Um, yeah, he looks ready to rock and roll.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Um, some other people that kind of popped onto the scene for me were ben pain, who took fourth and 17.
- 31:32Speaker 2: He's a little bit older now.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Um, he did get 28th and 2022.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Um, his fastest time here was 237 3939.
- 31:41Speaker 2: And then I also have Joshua Ernst.
- 31:43Speaker 2: He ran 239.44 in 2023.
- 31:47Speaker 2: So he's a returner.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I did not write down the place he got, but 239.44 is relatively solid.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:55Speaker 2: That's somebody who can compete for the top 10, no doubt Another name that I had on here.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Well, two names that stick out to me.
- 32:02Speaker 2: one, obviously, is hometown local, uh, mr benjamin down sent yes, uh ran 243, 57 in 2023 and I've heard out of his mouth himself, I think he he said to said to me like he thinks he's very capable of running faster and I think he's definitely.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Um, he's got a lot more racing experience this year under his belt, so I know he twisted his ankle, rolled his ankle, something, um, at Cirque series a basin, but from what I've heard from him, it seems to be coming back around.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Dude, it was so fun watching.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Uh, I saw the video of his finish against Adrian.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Um, uh, against Adrian.
- 32:40Speaker 2: God, what's Adrian's last name?
- 32:41Speaker 2: It's going to drive me crazy.
- 32:42Speaker 4: McDonald, yeah, mcdonald.
- 32:44Speaker 2: That kind of photo finished between him and Adrian at the end of a basin.
- 32:46Speaker 4: They were flying downhill.
- 32:47Speaker 4: Yeah that finish line was.
- 32:49Speaker 4: It was like just right at the end.
- 32:51Speaker 4: I mean, you're running down a ski hill, so it's super steep and fast.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 32:54Speaker 4: The two of them were like neck and neck, sprinting for the last half mile.
- 32:58Speaker 4: It was cool to see Benjamin kick.
- 33:02Speaker 2: It just proved and showed to me he really wanted it and sometimes that can be in a lot of these races.
- 33:10Speaker 2: That helps a lot.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Oh yeah, the emotional component is a huge factor.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Plus I really like him.
- 33:16Speaker 2: He's a buddy of mine, so I'd love to see him up there yeah.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Nepotism never hurts yeah exactly, and mine, so I'd love to see him up there.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, uh.
- 33:24Speaker 2: And then george foster uh, just had him on the podcast.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Uh, uh, from the united kingdom um dude sleeper name.
- 33:30Speaker 2: George foster's a stud.
- 33:31Speaker 2: He competed at worlds in chiang mai and worlds in um in austria.
- 33:37Speaker 2: Uh, what was that?
- 33:38Speaker 2: Last year?
- 33:38Speaker 2: In 23 um.
- 33:40Speaker 2: George foster also won the trans grand canary 84k in 2023 and also took sixth um in what was it?
- 33:49Speaker 2: 2019 running 230, 13.
- 33:53Speaker 2: What's interesting, so interesting to me about george foster is that the guy lives in the uk.
- 33:57Speaker 2: He's a fell runner.
- 33:58Speaker 2: He, you, somebody like this would just have like no adaptation to altitude.
- 34:03Speaker 2: But he's been out here.
- 34:04Speaker 2: He's been sleeping up at bar camp for the last week and a half.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Yeah, he's an interesting cat man.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I could definitely see him.
- 34:12Speaker 2: He's just coming off a tendon.
- 34:14Speaker 2: He just had tendon surgery, maybe in his ankle or his foot, maybe like a year ago, so he's just kind of coming back off that Um and his ankle or his foot, maybe like a year ago.
- 34:21Speaker 2: So he's just kind of coming back off that Uh.
- 34:22Speaker 2: But he, he claims fitness and I would love to see him.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Uh, go and take the, you know, take a top 10 spot.
- 34:28Speaker 4: I think he's definitely that would be super cool and I think the intentionality of sleeping up there and getting focused a week before the race is like that.
- 34:35Speaker 4: That stuff helps.
- 34:36Speaker 2: So yeah, he's like a monk dude he was.
- 34:38Speaker 2: We were joking around.
- 34:39Speaker 2: I'm like, cause he's at bar camp, Like there's nothing to do, Like he's like I brought a bunch of books with me.
- 34:44Speaker 2: He's been reading the whole time.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Cause he can't, it's nothing you can do on your phone, so yeah.
- 34:48Speaker 4: Oh, wish him luck.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so it'd be fun.
- 34:51Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of any other name.
- 34:52Speaker 2: So one other name leadville athlete.
- 35:04Speaker 2: He's a leadville nordic skier.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Uh, and we know how dangerous nordic skiers can be.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Yeah, um, but his ultra sign up.
- 35:07Speaker 2: When I tried to get into it I was not a like the, the page does not didn't go for me, um, so I don't know if you see anything on there or happen to have come across anything, or if it's up even now, but I had written his name down as somebody possible.
- 35:20Speaker 2: And then, very last is tyler veerman.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Took 10th at kindle mountain run this year, um, I think he ran himself in the top 20, top 30 at cirque series, a basin.
- 35:28Speaker 2: He's a consistent runner.
- 35:30Speaker 2: He's run in the past here, um, and he's run high twos, um in the marathon or in the ascent.
- 35:38Speaker 2: So there's somebody to think about.
- 35:40Speaker 4: So yeah, I think, uh, like I said, you know, the the men's race does have a bit more of those returners from previous years and, um, it'll be fascinating to see how this plays out.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Yeah, uh, looking over here at a couple other guys, uh, I wanted to give a shout out to mr rick webb.
- 36:00Speaker 4: He's a local here and him and I coach together down in the South Metro League for middle school cross country and I've been seeing him.
- 36:08Speaker 4: I know he's fit.
- 36:09Speaker 4: He just raced a basin.
- 36:11Speaker 4: He's doing the double he's going to do.
- 36:14Speaker 4: He's committed to the double a lot, of, a lot of intelligence into his training and he's doing a lot of training up at altitude doing those three, two ones.
- 36:25Speaker 4: He's, um, I think he just actually cracked the top 10 list for all-time three, two ones.
- 36:29Speaker 4: Um, damn dude, and he, yeah, so he's definitely fit, definitely ready.
- 36:34Speaker 4: Uh, he did well at the ascent or not the ascent, um a base and circ series which is, uh, you know, a super fast, short mountain race, and I think that those skills will translate to uh this coming weekend.
- 36:46Speaker 4: He's a fun.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Follow in strava.
- 36:47Speaker 2: His um, like he's.
- 36:49Speaker 2: I feel like he's very synonymous with that like group always running up and down the incline and it's cool.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Yeah, he's.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Uh, if you're a man or two, you got to do who rick webb is.
- 36:59Speaker 4: Yeah, oh, yeah, you'll see him.
- 37:01Speaker 4: Just go do the incline, like you know, any time of the day, and you'll see him up there, him and Bob Stuka.
- 37:06Speaker 2: That's right.
- 37:07Speaker 4: Got to shout out crazy Bob as well.
- 37:09Speaker 4: You know, living here in Colorado Springs, if you haven't seen crazy Bob running shirtless on the incline, uh, you're missing out, you know photo with crazy bob.
- 37:19Speaker 2: That's you know what dude.
- 37:20Speaker 2: I'm glad you mentioned that because I feel like we can't do a podcast about like the pikes, peak, mariner hunt and ascent or like anything local without mentioning crazy bob.
- 37:27Speaker 2: That was.
- 37:28Speaker 4: It was a good plug, yeah yeah, him and I actually hitchhiked down off of pikes peak, uh, like two weeks ago it was.
- 37:34Speaker 4: It was an interesting car ride down, to say the least oh, I bet he's probably got some wild stories, he's got crazy stories and he works in town, he's got a, he's got his own business, he does flooring and he's like he's trying to recruit me for a summer job.
- 37:45Speaker 4: I mean, I'd love to work for crazy bob anytime, anytime.
- 37:49Speaker 4: That's awesome, yeah, um, I think so.
- 37:55Speaker 4: Let's.
- 37:56Speaker 4: Let's bring it back to the demore brothers yes, um so seth demore has notably won the pikes peak marathon where I think on his ascent he ran something like 208 on the way up yes, in the marathon and then went on to finish low 340 339 kind of time frame.
- 38:18Speaker 4: So he is definitely someone who can just put this thing away and take the win if he really wants to.
- 38:26Speaker 4: I don't know what his training has looked like this year.
- 38:29Speaker 4: Um, he's someone who has a large family he's got like four kids and a wife, so he's he's busy at home, but I know he makes time for his training and um definitely gets up to altitude when he's available for it and if he's ready for it, I think it's could be his.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 38:45Speaker 2: I mean last year in, like we talked about like just you were you saw.
- 38:50Speaker 2: I mean, did you, did he pass you coming up?
- 38:53Speaker 4: Uh, that the reference I was thinking of was from 2022.
- 38:57Speaker 4: Okay, he passed me on the.
- 38:58Speaker 4: He wasn't in the 2023 race.
- 39:00Speaker 4: I don't think yeah.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Okay, he passed me on the.
- 39:01Speaker 2: He wasn't in the 2023 race.
- 39:02Speaker 2: I don't think.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Yeah, he ran.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Yeah, last year he ran 209.47.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Oh, okay, yeah.
- 39:04Speaker 4: And yes, it was him in 2023.
- 39:08Speaker 4: He passed me like right above.
- 39:09Speaker 4: He was probably in the 10th or 15th position all the way up until A-frame and then in the last three or four miles, he just turned it on and annihilated the field and ran one of the best uphill uh, or the best last five K of that race I've ever seen.
- 39:26Speaker 4: He's dangerous dude.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Like if I was Joe.
- 39:29Speaker 2: I think that's he's.
- 39:31Speaker 2: He's who you have to worry about, like hands down.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Um, yeah, I don't know, man, it's, it's very like.
- 39:37Speaker 2: The tactics up front are going to be very interesting, because if Seth can get out in front and dictate that pace or even take it easy, like even if you have a minute or two on him above a frame, he still has the ability to catch you, and that's the scariest part, right, I'd be looking over my shoulder the whole time, freaking out.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Well, and knowing he's got that marathon strength in him, he can go up and down If he, you know, he's got the durability and endurance to make it up there.
- 40:02Speaker 2: and yeah, even if he's not in that first spot up at a frame, he'll catch you yeah and it's interesting too, man, like it's crazy that the the front of the field this year, more or less, is going to be dictated by quote-unquote.
- 40:14Speaker 2: Old guys like joe is 40 and seth's 39, like it's really interesting that you can produce at such a high level.
- 40:22Speaker 2: You know, into your 40, your forties at this point, which is wild.
- 40:26Speaker 4: I think it, uh, it leaves hope, yeah, it leaves hope for a lot of athletes out there.
- 40:30Speaker 4: That you're, you know, your athletic peak is.
- 40:32Speaker 4: It's it's long been debated, but I think it's uh proven to be maybe older than people previously thought.
- 40:40Speaker 2: I think you're right, it's going gonna be interesting and joe, you know to quote joe demore as well just coming back from uh world sky running champs, where he took second in the vk trying to defend his vk championship.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Um, I think joe's fastest time that he's ever ran on this was 224 48 and I know he kind of had a kind of some low points in 2023 at this race.
- 41:01Speaker 2: So I I think Joe's more than capable to come back and run himself into the top five.
- 41:05Speaker 4: Oh for sure I think Joe's got a better time in him on that course and, um you know, coming off a world.
- 41:11Speaker 4: Hopefully he has the confidence and um composure, to put that together.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Let's talk about Kieran.
- 41:16Speaker 4: Yeah, my boy Kieran, hey, um so him and I did a crazy workout we did.
- 41:26Speaker 2: We started in manitou.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Uh, this was gosh.
- 41:27Speaker 2: Ted had been like when did I see you?
- 41:27Speaker 4: a week ago, a week ago, yeah, two weeks ago, uh, I don't know.
- 41:29Speaker 4: Anyways, we started in manitou and we did a tempo up to bar camp in about 60 minutes.
- 41:36Speaker 4: Then we jogged real silly, easy, um, you know, like 15 minute miles up until A-frame and then at A-frame we did some tempo pushes up there, did some intervals all the way to the summit and you know, with the workout and the lollygagging in between, we still finished in like 2.35.
- 41:59Speaker 4: Wow in like 235, wow.
- 42:00Speaker 4: So, um, I think if you know if kieran can take, take his fitness and take his uh, take the pieces and put them together, he could be really dangerous here.
- 42:11Speaker 4: The other notable thing that kieran just put up was uh, he took the course record on the red cloud.
- 42:17Speaker 4: Uh, 14er or red cloud, something like sunshine yeah, I think it's red cloud yeah, red cloud cloud, something like that.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Sunshine yeah, I think it's red cloud.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Yeah, red cloud peak, or something like that.
- 42:23Speaker 4: It just took the course record from uh some some guy, unknown dude named Jim Wamsley.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Wow.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Never heard of him, yeah.
- 42:30Speaker 4: I think he took a full, almost a full minute off of him on that one.
- 42:33Speaker 4: So, and that that trail up there is definitely more runnable than the Pike's peak trail or the bar trail.
- 42:38Speaker 4: But you, you know, still working at altitude, still definitely getting that lactic fatigue, you know, up high.
- 42:45Speaker 4: So if he can put those, put those skills to use here, I think he'll crush it yeah, yeah, I'm excited for kieran man.
- 42:52Speaker 2: I feel like he's had an interesting journey this year series and all which just like what an iconic race to go.
- 42:59Speaker 2: You know, kill yourself at yeah more or less.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Um, you know, he said some broken arrow was a tough one for him this year.
- 43:06Speaker 2: I know broken arrow was just so incredibly fast up front um, not even up front, just like all around.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Broken arrow was speedy.
- 43:13Speaker 2: So I think it's it's going to be fun to see kieran hopefully put it all together.
- 43:17Speaker 4: Uh, yeah so if you, if you're not familiar, series analysis race in switzerland that starts at almost a similar similar profile to uh first half of pikes, peak um, and he was very intentional about his training going into that and um, he's been very intentional about his training coming into pikes here.
- 43:35Speaker 4: So, uh, anime flynn and his goat is his coach, so she's, she's putting him to work and making him, making him be intentional with these things, heck yeah yeah, he was telling me about that bridge to valhalla that he was running in.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Uh, uh was an ure, yep that.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Yup.
- 43:50Speaker 2: That's a.
- 43:50Speaker 2: That's a, that's a tough tough little segment he was.
- 43:54Speaker 4: he did it intentionally cause it mirrored the profile of what you would see in series.
- 43:58Speaker 2: And now he was fun fact about series and all.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Did you know?
- 44:01Speaker 2: It goes from Siri to is an all.
- 44:03Speaker 2: I didn't know that that's cool.
- 44:08Speaker 2: All right, right, let's get into our top five or top three.
- 44:11Speaker 2: We do top three.
- 44:11Speaker 2: I think that's probably easier.
- 44:13Speaker 4: Top three, yeah, I'll let you uh kick it off oh boy, top three here at the 2024 pikes peak ascent for the for the men's.
- 44:21Speaker 4: Um, I'm gonna have to go with my first place.
- 44:26Speaker 4: Um, I would love to see joe get his fifth win here.
- 44:30Speaker 4: Um, I know that that ankle is going to be bothering him from the, from the Cirque race.
- 44:35Speaker 4: He definitely twisted his ankle back there a week ago.
- 44:38Speaker 4: But I know he's smart and I know he's going to take care of it this week and make sure it's healthy.
- 44:42Speaker 4: So I'm going to put him first.
- 44:45Speaker 4: I'm not going to say a time prediction on that, but I think he's taken that first spot.
- 44:50Speaker 4: Second, I'd love to see seth pushing joe up the hill and giving him a run for his money.
- 44:56Speaker 4: So I think seth and uh, seth will be really close behind.
- 45:00Speaker 4: Um, yeah, it wouldn't be a big gap at all.
- 45:03Speaker 2: And no, that's gonna be so close and then in my third place spot, I'm gonna be uh, be a little biased here and I'm gonna throw kieran dude you, I have the same thing, here in a and third, I just love the kid, you know I, yeah, I, I can't echo it enough same way, like it would be to see kieran get on the podium here would be like not just career making, but like just just that level of confidence I think it'll give them like moving forward well, this was the first trail race he ever did, I think back in like 2017 wow, he was you know, still a high school kid.
- 45:39Speaker 4: He did it when he was like 17 that's crazy.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's gonna be.
- 45:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I think actually in 2017 he was 17 or something like that, so he was young, young, young and got a lot of years all right, so I'm gonna I think I'm gonna say the same thing.
- 45:55Speaker 2: I'm pretty like I had joe.
- 45:57Speaker 2: I'd love to see joe get his fifth win excuse me.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Um, despite of what just happened, like sir k basin, he did just race literally the best in the world.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Um, I don't want to go off on too much of a tangent, but who is that kid that took second with his name?
- 46:11Speaker 4: starts with jay jalkin or jokin his name's joan de leon and he is a.
- 46:16Speaker 4: He's in crested butte now, but he's from texas and he just moved up there.
- 46:20Speaker 4: Uh, you know because he had a couple buddies, I think, notably kade michael, which is someone you should have on the pod 100 yeah but yeah, joan's been up there for a couple of years now.
- 46:30Speaker 4: Him and I have known each other through a friend of a friend and raced on a couple of occasions.
- 46:36Speaker 4: He beat me at the elk run 5k I think he was like you know, we both ran like in the fifteens at 8,000 feet there.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Wow.
- 46:49Speaker 4: So he was fit.
- 46:50Speaker 4: He was definitely fit then.
- 46:52Speaker 4: I think he was in last year's race, like he ran the 2023 pikes peak ascent and he uh, you know he's not in it this year, but I think he would be a great candidate to do this race.
- 47:05Speaker 4: Yeah, um, but yeah, he was in the race 2023.
- 47:08Speaker 4: I don't think he put it together well or didn't fuel, but he's definitely someone to look for in years to come and he's a crusher.
- 47:16Speaker 2: It's interesting.
- 47:16Speaker 2: I love how you guys all know this kid and out of the woodwork.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Another Western or kid from that Gunnison area comes out of the woodwork.
- 47:24Speaker 4: I'm telling you, man, that's all we do up there is, just run, run or drink beer.
- 47:28Speaker 1: You got two options.
- 47:31Speaker 2: All right, so that's what I was saying before.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Thank you for that segue, because I was really interested, especially after seeing you know just what he was capable of doing last week.
- 47:37Speaker 2: It was a whole Wow.
- 47:38Speaker 2: So, joe, I'm going to say Joe is going to compete for his fifth win here.
- 47:42Speaker 2: I think Joe is going to be pushed man, I really do, and I think, if Joe, it would be very special to see him get it.
- 47:57Speaker 2: But he's good, I really think he's going to have to earn it this this time around.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Um, he's not going to be by himself.
- 47:59Speaker 2: I think Seth is a beast and it's going to push him.
- 47:59Speaker 2: So some fun little stats here.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Joe ran his fastest time on this course in 2016,.
- 48:02Speaker 2: He ran two oh five 28.
- 48:03Speaker 2: He ran in 2019, two oh eight 59.
- 48:07Speaker 2: And in 2022, he ran two oh nine to 13.
- 48:12Speaker 2: So this is some some good little variances of like what the capabilities are and what he possibly can do.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Um, I think this year, personally, my guess would be um would like to see the winner, or I would guess that the winner is probably going to be somewhere in that.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Two, 10 to a nine to two 11 time is my guess.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Yeah, um, I could be wrong, though I don't know.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Um transitioning down to number two seth demore, um, and the only reason I have him there is just because, like, I have a little bit more of a bead and an idea of because joe just raised very recently of what joe's been up to seth I don't really know and he keeps his training very private.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Um, I do know when he does show up he does throw down.
- 48:52Speaker 2: I mean, he's a Leadville half marathon champion.
- 48:54Speaker 2: This year.
- 48:54Speaker 2: He also took third in at the Kendall mountain race, which kind of surprised me a little bit.
- 49:00Speaker 2: I would have guessed and anticipated him to take that dub against like the likes of sorry, the likes of no Williams and camp Smith.
- 49:10Speaker 2: So that was kind of a good idea to see where he was at I don't know how, like if he was peaking for it or what the plan was or if he was just using it as a training race.
- 49:18Speaker 2: So we'll see.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Um, some fun facts he did run his fastest time on the ascent.
- 49:23Speaker 2: It was two oh, eight high.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Um, when he did win the marathon.
- 49:27Speaker 2: And last year, in 2023, he ran two, 47 to take.
- 49:31Speaker 2: I believe it was fourth.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Um, yeah, I don't know, this is that's a really tough one.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Uh, like third place for me is much more cut and dry than it is for, like, what's going to happen between joe and gray.
- 49:42Speaker 2: I really, like I said, just coming back to the fact, I think seth is going to push joe and if joe does not come with his best, I think seth is going to win, unless I think it's so interesting right now because joe's got that.
- 49:52Speaker 4: You know, maybe ankle problem to deal with yeah seth.
- 49:55Speaker 4: Getting third at the kendall mountain run does not bode well for beating world champion mr joe gray yeah so I, I don't know, I think they're both kind of maybe on their back foot here, so it'll be really interesting to see how they compete.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Yeah, um in third kieran dude um.
- 50:13Speaker 2: He ran himself to 27 55 in 2019 um.
- 50:17Speaker 4: I believe that was his fastest time.
- 50:21Speaker 4: That was a marathon as well.
- 50:23Speaker 4: That was a marathon okay in his marathon, in his marathon.
- 50:26Speaker 2: So yeah, dude, I don't know, I I I think kieran just has the, the tools and the ability to do it, and I want to see him do it, you know.
- 50:34Speaker 2: So I think you could take 10 minutes off that time easily, easily, I mean, you've run with them.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Obviously, you just did a crazy workout to the top and it wasn't that difficult for for you guys to get in the 235 range.
- 50:45Speaker 4: So he'll, he'll be ready yeah, um dude, that's.
- 50:49Speaker 2: That's what we got for the ascent yeah, yeah.
- 50:51Speaker 4: Do you want to speak?
- 50:51Speaker 4: Ascent 2024?
- 50:52Speaker 2: Yeah, really quick.
- 50:54Speaker 2: So, like I said, two things, I think, like I said, that men's time is going to come down if maybe you agree, disagree somewhere between 209 to 11.
- 51:03Speaker 2: And I think that women's time maybe 239, somewhere in that range, maybe like mid-230s to 239 range.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Um, dobson's record was what?
- 51:14Speaker 2: 226.
- 51:15Speaker 2: I don't see that going down anytime soon.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Um, I don't especially with a.
- 51:20Speaker 4: I mean I'd love to see a random baller just kind of pop up out of nowhere and take that.
- 51:25Speaker 4: Uh, I don't think it's out of out of question, but um, as far as our research shows, I haven't seen anyone that's like oh, here's our gal coming in for the record.
- 51:36Speaker 4: It's true, they might be out there, they might be.
- 51:38Speaker 4: Hopefully It'd be cool.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Some quick ending notes.
- 51:42Speaker 2: I know we wanted to talk a little bit about the marathon.
- 51:45Speaker 2: I know we weren't going to do a full preview episode on it, but just a little discussion on some of the names.
- 51:49Speaker 2: I think there's some more storylines, more so, probably.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Uh, on the men's field, um, I did not know until you brought this to my attention today that david sinclair was a last minute sign up, like.
- 52:01Speaker 2: I feel like, if he's on the start line, that has to be discussed and talked about.
- 52:04Speaker 2: I want to reach out to him now to get him on the podcast, because I'm like, oh my god, I want to talk to David Sinclair.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Yeah, um so.
- 52:09Speaker 2: Yeah, some of the names.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Obviously, john Aziz is looking for his third win and he's looking to go for his three Pete, which would be absolutely crazy.
- 52:19Speaker 4: Yeah, um, so yeah, I hope to see John uh, john get his third win.
- 52:24Speaker 4: I know him and Joe do quite a bit of workouts together and, um, he's, he's pretty fit, I think he's.
- 52:31Speaker 4: Uh, he's got the, he's got the tools.
- 52:33Speaker 4: If he can put it together and stay rubber side down on the way downhill, yep, he'll be all right.
- 52:38Speaker 4: Um, the another notable one is, you know, I think, like you said, uh, david sinclair.
- 52:45Speaker 4: Um, he's been here before.
- 52:47Speaker 4: He's definitely put up some incredible times on the ascent and the marathon.
- 52:53Speaker 4: He's got a 216 ascent best time, wow.
- 52:55Speaker 4: And then I don't know what his final marathon finish would have been.
- 52:59Speaker 2: Wait, do you have a faster ascent than him?
- 53:01Speaker 4: I do.
- 53:02Speaker 2: Yeah, Technically you beat David Sinclair.
- 53:08Speaker 4: And then another notable guy here coming in for the ascent is, uh, mr cam smith, and he is I know he's done well here before in the marathon and I just raced him recently at the a base in circ, so he's he's definitely in good form and um, he wasn't he first this weekend at?
- 53:27Speaker 2: the uh won the rut vk and the 28k.
- 53:30Speaker 4: Yeah, so he's crazy he's in good form this season and I know he's uh, he's healthy.
- 53:35Speaker 4: And he had a couple years there where he like broke an elbow and like broke his shoulder or something something crazy with a ski accident or something like that and but now he's back and he's healthy and he's crushing things another crested butte kid.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Yeah, let me tell you, man what do you do up there?
- 53:51Speaker 2: A lot of training um darren thomas as well.
- 53:54Speaker 2: That's another one.
- 53:55Speaker 4: Yes, darren thomas um, and it's.
- 53:57Speaker 2: It's interesting, darren thomas, I think, when he's full, full gas, uh and healthy, arguably one of the best in the world, you put him up there.
- 54:05Speaker 2: Um, I just don't know, following a drop at acc or occ, like what, um, what's it's gonna like?
- 54:12Speaker 2: What is it gonna look like for darren?
- 54:13Speaker 2: I don't, I don't know.
- 54:14Speaker 2: I think darren, though, has shocked a lot of people in the past, like, for instance, like last year, not this past, uh, broken arrow, but the year before he showed up to the vk and just got second.
- 54:24Speaker 2: Um, yeah, darren's very dangerous.
- 54:28Speaker 2: It doesn't matter if he's broken or not.
- 54:31Speaker 4: Yeah, darren's a stud.
- 54:32Speaker 4: He's got 10 ascents or 10 total peaks, so that could be a marathon or a ascent throughout his years, but he's got 10 races here since 2010.
- 54:43Speaker 4: So he's 30 now.
- 54:45Speaker 4: So he started 10 years ago.
- 54:47Speaker 4: That's so crazy.
- 54:48Speaker 4: He's got a fastest ascent on a 222.
- 54:50Speaker 4: So he's definitely a player in that game if he's gonna be fit and healthy.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Yeah um trying to do.
- 54:58Speaker 2: There was anybody on the oh jupiter as well, who just ran western states.
- 55:01Speaker 2: Um and uh took second at black canyon to hayden hawks, which is what a great result.
- 55:09Speaker 4: Just a crazy, crazy race.
- 55:10Speaker 4: So yeah, jupiter is in the race.
- 55:13Speaker 4: He's only 30 years old, which I didn't know that but he is uh straight out of Mexico, coyo Topec, mexico, and uh, he's, he's definitely a fit athlete.
- 55:25Speaker 2: So yeah, and then.
- 55:25Speaker 4: Jupiter, sorry, kevin Vermillion, um from Chiev.
- 55:29Speaker 4: Oh no, I don't know where he's at from, but it says Switzerland.
- 55:35Speaker 4: So I raced him at desert rats a couple of years, or, uh, this past gosh, yeah, this past spring.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Uh and I think he was third.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Uh, it was Eli, me and then, uh, kevin.
- 55:45Speaker 4: So he's definitely fast and if he's he's coming from the mountains of Switzerland, he'll be ready.
- 55:50Speaker 4: Uh, switching over to the females real quick.
- 55:53Speaker 4: Yeah, we got sarah beal, who's?
- 55:55Speaker 4: I think she's my pick for the female marathon winner, sarah beal, um and it's gonna be interesting without christina this year.
- 56:05Speaker 2: This leaves a huge, a huge void.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Christina three-time, uh, marathon champion, kind of heads over now to she's racing.
- 56:12Speaker 2: Um, she'll be at mammoth, sorry, yeah um, she just did the next weekend.
- 56:18Speaker 2: Yeah, she was at yesterday and she got a great result.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Shout out to christina top 20 at uh golden trail series race is no joke it's fantastic, um.
- 56:26Speaker 2: So yeah, and I think mammoth will be her race in a lot of ways, because she's dude, she's nasty, she has like the second fastest female descent on Pike's Peak.
- 56:34Speaker 4: Christina Mascarenas is a local here in Colorado Springs and you know she's.
- 56:38Speaker 4: She's on the overall like like crown list, like on Strava, on most of the runs around here, even on the men's times too.
- 56:47Speaker 4: So, yeah, she kills it.
- 56:48Speaker 4: She's awesome.
- 56:57Speaker 2: And she's just a good person.
