- 0:00Hey guys, back for another episode of Trump's
- 0:02The Art of the Deal, Trump Card's Elements of
- 0:05the Deal. Fight back, Trump says. The risk is
- 0:07that you'll make a bad situation worse, and I
- 0:09certainly don't recommend this approach to everyone,
- 0:11but my experience is that if you're fighting
- 0:14for something you believe in, even if it means
- 0:15alienating some people along the way, things
- 0:18usually work out for the best in the end. Trump
- 0:20says essentially that he won't let slights go
- 0:24unnoticed or what he perceives to be injustices
- 0:27go by without a fight. He says as much as he
- 0:31likes to emphasize the positive, there are times
- 0:32when the only choice is confrontation. And we
- 0:35see that in prison movies where the signal that
- 0:42you are willing to fight sometimes is enough
- 0:44to let your adversaries know not to mess with
- 0:47you. that you won't allow people to walk on your
- 0:53toes is a signal to the bullies that you don't
- 0:57want to be messed with, that it doesn't pay to
- 1:00go after you, that you fight back, essentially.
- 1:02Now, Trump is going to give two examples of how
- 1:05he used that approach for his business ventures.
- 1:08When the city unfairly denied me on Trump Tower,
- 1:11the standard tax break every developer had been
- 1:14getting, I fought them in six different courts.
- 1:16It cost me a lot of money. I was considered highly
- 1:19likely to lose. And people told me it was a no
- 1:21-win situation politically. I would have considered
- 1:23it worth the effort regardless of the outcome.
- 1:26In this case, I won, which made it even better.
- 1:29So Trump fought the city in six different courts.
- 1:32And now he adds another example. When all day
- 1:35ends, once my partners at the Trump Plaza Hotel
- 1:37and Casino in Atlantic City ran a casino that
- 1:40consistently performed among the bottom 50 %
- 1:42of casinos in town, I fought them very hard and
- 1:45they finally sold. out their share to me. Then
- 1:48I began to think about trying to take over the
- 1:50holidays in company altogether. So essentially
- 1:53he was not happy with the way they ran things
- 1:57and he got them to sell their share by essentially
- 2:01fighting back on their initial agreement. He
- 2:07basically, even in friendlier encounters with
- 2:10his partner, he realized that things weren't
- 2:13going the way he expected that. Things were supposed,
- 2:17how we expected things to go, fought them and
- 2:19got them to sell their shares because they were
- 2:22running an unprofitable operation. And that is
- 2:25also shown in his many, right, the key word we
- 2:28have on The Apprentice is you're fired. So although
- 2:31he's someone, as we can tell. Trump likes being
- 2:34appreciated. He likes being with people. He wants
- 2:37the approval, not at all costs, but he likes
- 2:39to be liked. And that's a very healthy human
- 2:42trait to want to be part of society, to want
- 2:46to be accepted. It is certainly something that
- 2:50we can relate to. But when his interests are
- 2:53not, right, even though he can like someone and
- 2:58want the person to like them, doesn't mean he...
- 3:01lose sight of the bigger objectives and he's
- 3:06if he feels a contract is not being upheld or
- 3:13a situation is unjust like with the city of New
- 3:17York or with the holidays in that around a poor
- 3:20operation he doesn't hesitate to to let his thoughts
- 3:25known and to Take action. Now he says, even if
- 3:29I never went on the offensive, there are a lot
- 3:31of people gunning for me now. One of the problems
- 3:33when you become successful is that jealousy and
- 3:35envy inevitably follow. There are people like,
- 3:38I categorize them as life's losers, get their
- 3:41sense of accomplishment and achievement from
- 3:42trying to stop others. As far as I'm concerned,
- 3:45if they had any real ability, they wouldn't be
- 3:47fighting me. They'd be doing something constructive
- 3:49themselves. And that echoes also how Trump thinks
- 3:52of the media. More broadly, people take very
- 3:54damaging strokes at him that haven't accomplished
- 3:57a fraction of what he has or that talk about
- 4:01his wealth that don't have a fraction of his
- 4:04wealth or that talk about his dealmaking that
- 4:07haven't gotten into the arena. So it's easy to
- 4:09see where the criticism comes from, right? that
- 4:14have a job at prestigious news organizations
- 4:17and that get to control like an editorial line.
- 4:20But you will rarely get any kind of criticism
- 4:24from people who are in the arena. So Trump realizes
- 4:27that the people who are busy getting things done
- 4:30and taking risks and that are more on the action
- 4:34side, usually they're happy with others or they
- 4:37don't even notice another person's success. The
- 4:39people who are... into the criticism, usually
- 4:42because they don't have the ability to do things
- 4:45themselves. All right, so the lesson here is
- 4:47to fight back.
