- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, a very special Sunday morning edition of the
- 0:08Speaker 1: show for you all. Welcome back to Cardinal Territory. I'm
- 0:11Speaker 1: your host, Katie Wu flying solo today. Have no fear,
- 0:14Speaker 1: though Bernie Nicholas will be back with me after today's
- 0:16Speaker 1: game to break down the Cardinals race series. Saint Louis
- 0:20Speaker 1: going for the series victory. On this early Sunday game,
- 0:23Speaker 1: first pitch, eleven, ten Central Standard time, Matthew Libertora takes
- 0:27Speaker 1: the mound against right hander Ryan Peppio, former Dodger.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I believe and hey, going forward to this road trip
- 0:32Speaker 2: would certainly be a win.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Heading into the next week, which is full of NL
- 0:36Speaker 1: Central matchups, the Cards have a quick homestand back at
- 0:39Speaker 1: Bush starting Monday, four games against the Pirates, and then
- 0:42Speaker 1: straight to Cincinnati for an even quicker road trip, just
- 0:44Speaker 1: three games at Great American Ballpark, a chance to pick
- 0:47Speaker 1: up some ground in the wild card race if we're
- 0:51Speaker 1: still doing that, you know. I actually saw tweet on
- 0:53Speaker 1: Twitter that was like, look, I'm not saying the Cardinals
- 0:55Speaker 1: are good. I'm not saying the Cardinals are entertaining, but
- 0:58Speaker 1: I am saying the Cardinals are still mathematically in it.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And I was like, yeah, that's kind of real. Yes,
- 1:02Speaker 1: the Cardinals are a whopping at this point of recording,
- 1:05Speaker 1: seventeen point five games back in the division behind the Brewers,
- 1:09Speaker 1: which is insane. They are five games out of the
- 1:12Speaker 1: last wildcard spot in the National League. It's not late
- 1:15Speaker 1: enough in the season to definitively declare them out of
- 1:18Speaker 1: this playoff picture entirely. But we know what we're watching here,
- 1:22Speaker 1: all right, Okay, let's talk some pitching. Let's break down
- 1:28Speaker 1: some of the performances from our first two starters of
- 1:31Speaker 1: this series. And if you're wondering why there was this
- 1:33Speaker 1: random off day on a Saturday yesterday, it was not
- 1:36Speaker 1: originally planned this way.
- 1:37Speaker 2: The Cardinals were supposed to have.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Three days in Miami Wednday, Tuesday, Wednesday, have the off
- 1:42Speaker 1: day in Tampa on Thursday, and then player traditional weekend
- 1:45Speaker 1: series Friday, Saturday Sunday at George Stein Bernner Fields, as
- 1:49Speaker 1: traditional as it can be to play a Major League
- 1:51Speaker 1: Baseball game in a minor league stadium. But I digress,
- 1:54Speaker 1: But what happened was when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released
- 1:58Speaker 1: their preseason schedule, they had a game across the street.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I'm not in Tampa obviously, but apparently where the Tampa
- 2:05Speaker 1: Bay Bucks play, it's very close to Steime Bernerfield. That
- 2:09Speaker 1: game was scheduled for Saturday, so the Cardinals and Rays
- 2:12Speaker 1: were flexed to the original off day, which was Thursday.
- 2:14Speaker 1: The Bucks play Saturday, hence the random off day over
- 2:18Speaker 1: the weekend. Bad time for an off day apparently, though.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I guess it rained all day in Saint Petersburg. So
- 2:23Speaker 1: so sorry for my friends out there who very much
- 2:25Speaker 1: deserved a Saturday day off.
- 2:26Speaker 2: We don't get very many of those, maybe next time.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Okay, back to it all right, Let's look at Thursday starter. First,
- 2:34Speaker 1: Sunny Gray, nothing special, but he gave him a shot.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Five innings pitched, six hits, three arned runs, one homer,
- 2:39Speaker 1: a walk, six strikeouts.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Cool.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Cardinals win seven four behind a big day at the
- 2:42Speaker 1: plate for Alec Burlison. He was a late scratch Friday
- 2:45Speaker 1: with some right wrist discomfort soreness. Hopefully the off day
- 2:49Speaker 1: helps and he's back in there on Sunday. Cardinals obviously
- 2:51Speaker 1: cannot afford to lose any more starters. No Donovan, no
- 2:54Speaker 1: Victor Scott. Aronado's still on the aisle, and I believe
- 2:58Speaker 1: he swung about for the first time on Friday, so
- 3:01Speaker 1: technically has rezume baseball activity, but still remains a little
- 3:04Speaker 1: bit aways Friday, Miles Michaelis not good. Two and two
- 3:08Speaker 1: thirds innings, ten hits, four and runs, two homers, a
- 3:11Speaker 1: walk and a strikeout. The road home splits are kind
- 3:14Speaker 1: of crazy for Miles Michaelis. He's made twelve starts at
- 3:17Speaker 1: the friendly confines in bus Stadium. He has a three
- 3:19Speaker 1: seven oh ERA that'll work sixty five and two thirds innings,
- 3:24Speaker 1: seventeen walks compared to forty strikeouts for a guy that
- 3:27Speaker 1: doesn't have a lot of swing and miss.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, you'll take that. On the road, though, has
- 3:31Speaker 2: not been the case.
- 3:32Speaker 1: In his thirteen road games, Miles has allowed let's see,
- 3:36Speaker 1: forty five earned runs over fifty nine and two thirds innings.
- 3:40Speaker 2: That's good for a six seven to nine ERA. Not
- 3:43Speaker 2: what you want. He's actually walked less batters.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Fourteen compared to seventeen at home, and struck out just
- 3:49Speaker 1: one more at forty one. It is strange to me
- 3:53Speaker 1: why it's such a jarring difference at home versus on
- 3:56Speaker 1: the road, But I think we all have a lot
- 3:59Speaker 1: more confidence in Miles when he's pitching at home and
- 4:01Speaker 1: on the road.
- 4:01Speaker 2: We kind of just watched with their eyes closed a
- 4:03Speaker 2: little bit.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I don't know now here, what if I told you
- 4:06Speaker 1: here on our Cardinal Territory podcast that I'm not sure
- 4:11Speaker 1: either of these pictures.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Will be back in twenty twenty six.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Now, granted, that's probably a no brainer for Miles Michaelis,
- 4:15Speaker 1: who's in the final year of the two year extension
- 4:18Speaker 1: he signed in twenty twenty three. He's making almost eighteen
- 4:21Speaker 1: million dollars this year. The Cardinals certainly will have you
- 4:24Speaker 1: bringing him back. Definitely, not at that at that price
- 4:27Speaker 1: point for an organization looking to build and pointing towards
- 4:30Speaker 1: the future, I'm not quite sure where the thirty seven
- 4:33Speaker 1: year old Miles Michaelis fits on their plans. I would
- 4:35Speaker 1: be shocked if he is in the Cardinals' uniform next year.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And I would also be surprised if Sonny Gray was
- 4:42Speaker 1: wearing the birds on the bat. And I'll preface this,
- 4:43Speaker 1: but this is my speculation. I'm just wondering out loud here.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Sonny Gray is also in the final year of the
- 4:48Speaker 1: three year deal he signed as a free agent heading
- 4:50Speaker 1: into the twenty twenty four season. If you do recall,
- 4:53Speaker 1: the Cardinals when they signed him, had kind of a
- 4:57Speaker 1: broken down contract where it escalated severely.
- 5:00Speaker 2: After each year. So he was only making of the.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Seventy five million dollar contract, not including the thirty million
- 5:05Speaker 1: dollar club option for twenty twenty seven, and he's only
- 5:09Speaker 1: making ten million dollars in twenty twenty four, and then
- 5:11Speaker 1: it became twenty five this season, and we thirty five.
- 5:14Speaker 2: And twenty twenty six.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I personally cannot see Cardinals ownership or the new front
- 5:20Speaker 1: office stomaching thirty five million dollars for one player in
- 5:23Speaker 1: a year.
- 5:23Speaker 2: That's going to be about rebuilding and the future. And
- 5:27Speaker 2: it gets a little.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Complicated here because Sunny Gray, as we all know, does
- 5:30Speaker 1: have a full note trade clause. But I do wonder,
- 5:32Speaker 1: as he approaches his final year and he's getting a
- 5:35Speaker 1: little older too, if he misses the desire of competing,
- 5:38Speaker 1: if he wants to play in meaningful games again, because
- 5:40Speaker 1: I'm not sure that those games will happen in twenty
- 5:43Speaker 1: twenty six here in Saint Louis, So I do wonder
- 5:46Speaker 1: if there's maybe mutual incentive again speculation, but hear me
- 5:50Speaker 1: out for Sunny Gray to waive his no trade clause
- 5:54Speaker 1: for a team that he would consider going to, and
- 5:56Speaker 1: I don't know what those teams are, and we don't
- 5:57Speaker 1: even know if this is on the table, because that
- 6:00Speaker 1: would help the Cardinals financially move some money off the
- 6:02Speaker 1: books and allow Sonny to go and play for a
- 6:04Speaker 1: competitive organization and play some meaningful games.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Again, we'll see. But if that's the case, then what
- 6:11Speaker 2: the heck will the Cardinals rotation look like next year?
- 6:13Speaker 1: I think we can pretty much plan for mys Michael's
- 6:15Speaker 1: to be out of it. Let's say Sonny Gray isn't
- 6:17Speaker 1: here next year either, Well, you're looking at Matthew Libertre,
- 6:21Speaker 1: Michael McGreevey, Andre Polante and who knows, Well, the Cardinals
- 6:28Speaker 1: have to go to the free agent market and get
- 6:29Speaker 1: a mid tier rotation starter maybe probably because I don't
- 6:34Speaker 1: really see anyone in triple A to co Roby had
- 6:36Speaker 1: Tommy John surgery, Quinn Matthews has looked all right, He'll
- 6:39Speaker 1: probably get a shot in spring training, Tank Kent has
- 6:41Speaker 1: been hurt. Cooper Jerby the twenty twenty two first round pick,
- 6:44Speaker 1: Tommy John surgery Sama versa Tommy John surgery.
- 6:47Speaker 2: So not a lot of options in Triple A. But
- 6:49Speaker 2: we know this. Longtime listeners of the.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Podcast know that this has been a problem for the Cardinals,
- 6:53Speaker 1: not just the season, but multiple seasons before. So if
- 6:56Speaker 1: the Cardinals do trade Sunny Gray, they're almost going to
- 6:58Speaker 1: have to go to either the trade or the free
- 7:00Speaker 1: agent market to add some arms because they don't have any.
- 7:04Speaker 1: And let's not act like what we've seen out of
- 7:07Speaker 1: Antre Polante in particularly in the second half, gives us
- 7:09Speaker 1: a ton of confidence going forward. Now I don't want
- 7:11Speaker 1: to write him off completely. The whole point of this
- 7:13Speaker 1: year was to give guys an entire season, not just
- 7:16Speaker 1: a couple of months, not just a first or a
- 7:18Speaker 1: second half, unless you're Michael McGreevey I digress, but an
- 7:22Speaker 1: entire season to show what they have and that means
- 7:24Speaker 1: riding out the highs and the low So while Andre
- 7:26Speaker 1: Polante's second half has not been good, Matthew Liberto, our
- 7:28Speaker 1: second half has been just okay.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Much too early to.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Write them off for the twenty twenty six plans. If
- 7:34Speaker 1: the Cardinals go and pursue a starting pitcher via trade,
- 7:38Speaker 1: be a free agency where they're going to have to
- 7:40Speaker 1: especially if they trade Sonny Gray, pump the Brakes. Cardinals fans,
- 7:43Speaker 1: don't expect it to be a marquee signing. Expect a
- 7:45Speaker 1: lot of bulk moves. Dare I say expect some John
- 7:49Speaker 1: mozaylock signings esque. I know he won't be doing the ones.
- 7:52Speaker 1: He won't be doing the signing that'll be hind bluem obviously,
- 7:54Speaker 1: But what the Cardinals will be looking for is depth,
- 7:59Speaker 1: not a blockbuster arm. So that's my precursor to whatever
- 8:04Speaker 1: pitching problems we have right now will probably look nothing
- 8:06Speaker 1: compared to next year. Just something to keep in mind
- 8:09Speaker 1: as we go forward again. Matthew Libertoor taking that start
- 8:11Speaker 1: on Sunday, had a much better start against the Marlins
- 8:15Speaker 1: last series. Held that Velo completed five innings for the
- 8:17Speaker 1: first time since the All Star Break. You could kind
- 8:20Speaker 1: of feel the confidence and the relief talking to him postgame.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I personally have loved what we see out of Michael McGreevy.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I'm excited to see his start on Monday, and we'll
- 8:29Speaker 1: just kind of go from there, with Polante needing to
- 8:31Speaker 1: show some improvement as well. The rotation looks right now
- 8:35Speaker 1: like it might be a problem, but I cannot stress
- 8:37Speaker 1: enough that we do not know what this Cardinals rotation
- 8:40Speaker 1: is going to look like Come Pictures and Catchers on
- 8:42Speaker 1: August twenty third. We can only evaluate the internal options
- 8:46Speaker 1: right now, and right now, I think if I'm a fan,
- 8:49Speaker 1: I'm feeling confident about McGreevy and mostly confident.
- 8:52Speaker 2: About Libertor, and a lot nervous about everything else.
- 8:56Speaker 1: All right, Oh look, I'm a company woman today wrapping
- 9:01Speaker 1: my Foul Territory merch Did you guys know, by the way,
- 9:04Speaker 1: that we have Cardinal Territory merch You should.

- 9:31Speaker 2: I'm were at next episode, we'll see all right.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Next up, let's hear from our friends at DraftKings. It
- 9:37Speaker 1: is time for our DraftKings player Spotlight.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Player to watch. Let's get to it all right.
- 9:49Speaker 1: We've seen him lately in more headlines, more stories. Both
- 9:53Speaker 1: reporters in Tampa Bay and John DETTNEVMAB dot Com and
- 9:56Speaker 1: Derek Gold of the Saint Louis Post Dispatch have done
- 9:59Speaker 1: store worries on Lars new Bar our Player Spotlight. Let's
- 10:03Speaker 1: go ahead and look up Lars Newbar and the reason
- 10:06Speaker 1: why he is in there.
- 10:08Speaker 2: We talked with Oli Marmel, myself.
- 10:09Speaker 1: And Daniel Guerrero, who were the reporters in in Miami
- 10:12Speaker 1: a little bit about newpar earlier in the week, just
- 10:14Speaker 1: about what is the fair expectation for him going forward,
- 10:17Speaker 1: and the answer that Ali Marble gave us was the
- 10:19Speaker 1: same that he gave John and Derek in consistency. We
- 10:22Speaker 1: all know that the big concern for Lars Newfar this
- 10:24Speaker 1: year was the injury tendency. New Bar knock on wood
- 10:29Speaker 1: has hit the ile, stint has hit the il. It's
- 10:31Speaker 1: one stint roughly three weeks including the All Star break,
- 10:34Speaker 1: with some rib discomfort. But he's done a nice job
- 10:37Speaker 1: of staying on the field. I think you know missing two,
- 10:39Speaker 1: three weeks out of the entirety of one hundred and
- 10:41Speaker 1: sixty two game season. I think the Cardinals would gladly
- 10:43Speaker 1: take that from Newfar, who has missed much more. He
- 10:45Speaker 1: has not completed a season in which he's recorded more
- 10:48Speaker 1: than one hundred and twenty games played throughout his.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Four year career. So Newbar one has to finish the
- 10:53Speaker 2: season healthy. Two should start producing a little bit more consistently.
- 10:58Speaker 1: When you look at Lars new bars Baseball Savant page,
- 11:02Speaker 1: his stackcast metrics, it's a analytics nerds dream, all right.
- 11:07Speaker 1: His average exit below ninety one point seven. That's in
- 11:09Speaker 1: the top fifteen percent of the league hard hit percentage
- 11:12Speaker 1: fifty two percent of the time. He's hitting the ball
- 11:14Speaker 1: hard fifty two percent of the time.
- 11:16Speaker 2: That is a dream. Again, you love that.
- 11:18Speaker 1: That is better than that's in the ninety third percentile
- 11:21Speaker 1: of all hitters in baseball. He remains having a very
- 11:25Speaker 1: strong play discipline. He has an eighty five percent chase
- 11:28Speaker 1: rate and a five percent of twenty point eight walk
- 11:33Speaker 1: rate eleven percent, you'll take all of those. He's striking
- 11:35Speaker 1: out twenty one point six percent of the time. That's
- 11:37Speaker 1: right around La Gabage. So all of these on new
- 11:40Speaker 1: Bar's savant page. His baseball metrics all point to him
- 11:45Speaker 1: having a much better offensive profile than he does right now.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Right now, he's hitting two forty one with a three
- 11:50Speaker 1: thirty one on base percentage and a three ninety slugging
- 11:53Speaker 1: good for a seven to twenty one OPS. That to
- 11:55Speaker 1: me puts you right around fourth outfielder status for a
- 11:58Speaker 1: competitive organization.
- 11:59Speaker 2: And I've wont said, and I think Bernie agrees with me.
- 12:01Speaker 1: We've had to talk about this earlier in the season,
- 12:04Speaker 1: that Lars Newbar is a player that good teams can
- 12:06Speaker 1: burn around or build around.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Excuse me, not burn that's what the Cardinals are doing.
- 12:10Speaker 2: That was a joke. That was a joke. They're not
- 12:12Speaker 2: burning it down, They're just rebuilding with new Bar.
- 12:16Speaker 1: He might not play every day on a competitive team
- 12:18Speaker 1: if you're looking at a team like the Dodgers or
- 12:21Speaker 1: the Phillies, but he's a key part because good teams
- 12:24Speaker 1: have players like Newbar that can come in do the
- 12:26Speaker 1: lefty righting matchup. He's a strong outfielder, he can he
- 12:29Speaker 1: really profiles well in the corners. I think the Cardinals
- 12:32Speaker 1: are good at building supplementary pieces. They don't have the star.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Like we've talked about on the show, they have a
- 12:39Speaker 1: ton of supplementary pieces that don't necessarily fit. Unfortunately, Lars Newbar,
- 12:43Speaker 1: because those pieces are so redundant, his future is going
- 12:46Speaker 1: to be in jeopardy as well, mainly because he's already
- 12:49Speaker 1: in his first year of arbitration. He has two years
- 12:51Speaker 1: left before he'll be a free agent. Well, the Cardinals
- 12:53Speaker 1: be a competitive franchise in the next two years, who's
- 12:56Speaker 1: to say they probably aren't going to be next year.
- 12:58Speaker 2: So that's why I think the.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Pure is on new Bar this next month to fit
- 13:02Speaker 1: to post for one and to produce, to perform a
- 13:06Speaker 1: lot of alliteration right there. But because Newpar is going
- 13:09Speaker 1: to play for his future, this next month is going
- 13:11Speaker 1: to be about the future. We have talked about the
- 13:14Speaker 1: runway with Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker to an exhausting point.
- 13:17Speaker 1: They were players A, one A and one B in
- 13:20Speaker 1: terms of this whole transition season. Lars Newpar was player
- 13:23Speaker 1: one C. We just didn't talk about him as much.
- 13:26Speaker 1: But as we find ourselves towards the final five weeks
- 13:28Speaker 1: of the season, thirty plus games to go, Whi's crazy,
- 13:33Speaker 1: It's it's pretty clear that newpar is going to be
- 13:36Speaker 1: playing for his future as a Cardinal with this last month,
- 13:38Speaker 1: so let's see what he can do there.
- 13:40Speaker 2: He's going to get some consistent.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Time, especially with Victor Scott out, so we'll see new
- 13:45Speaker 1: Bar and center a little bit more than the Cardinals
- 13:46Speaker 1: have planned, but Nathan Church will still get the bulk
- 13:48Speaker 1: of the reps there. Shout out Nathan Church first career
- 13:50Speaker 1: hit and first career home run. Really cool to see
- 13:53Speaker 1: his family celebrating in the stands. Love those moments. But
- 13:56Speaker 1: for new Bar, hate to say it, but the pressure
- 13:58Speaker 1: is kind of on for him to produce the final
- 14:00Speaker 1: month of the season and showed the organization why he
- 14:03Speaker 1: is worth building around.
- 14:05Speaker 2: So that's our DraftKings player spotlight.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Lars new Bar, no Bernie to give you any picks today,
- 14:12Speaker 1: and I as we know, can't give you any, but
- 14:14Speaker 1: I will say if you go to the DraftKings Pick
- 14:17Speaker 1: six dot DraftKings dot Com right now, they'll have all
- 14:19Speaker 1: the picks for Sunday's game, completely unrelated to picks. The
- 14:22Speaker 1: game that I'm most interested in watching and that actually
- 14:24Speaker 1: does include Cardinals, raise Is Padres, Dodgers out in a
- 14:28Speaker 1: West big showdown, probably.
- 14:30Speaker 2: The most fun rivalry right now.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Look, I'm a West Coast girl, so Dodgers Giants are
- 14:34Speaker 1: always going to be the premier rivalry along with Yankees,
- 14:37Speaker 1: Red Sox, Cardinals, Cubs. All right, but the Dodgers Padres
- 14:40Speaker 1: are a very fun current rivalry right now, given what's
- 14:43Speaker 1: at stake, and given to how much those teams don't
- 14:45Speaker 1: like each other.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Dave Roberts Mike Schild going.
- 14:47Speaker 1: At it earlier in the season, So go ahead check
- 14:50Speaker 1: out the matchups.
- 14:51Speaker 2: On pick six.
- 14:53Speaker 1: You can download the DraftKings Pick six app right now
- 14:55Speaker 1: and use code foul.
- 14:56Speaker 2: That's code foul.
- 14:57Speaker 1: To register a new account and get fifty dollars in
- 15:00Speaker 1: US picks instantly ride the upside, where a few bucks
- 15:03Speaker 1: can turn into a bag only on DraftKings Pick six.
- 15:05Speaker 2: The crown is yours.
- 15:06Speaker 1: This current deal ends August twenty fourth at eleven to
- 15:10Speaker 1: fifty nine pm Eastern, So go ahead and check it out.
- 15:15Speaker 1: All right, we'll be right back with you, guys. We'll
- 15:17Speaker 1: get to the second half of the show first, though.
- 15:20Speaker 1: We need to have a quick message from our friends.
- 15:23Speaker 2: At rula ft fam.
- 15:25Speaker 3: When you're playing games, you kind of have some stress anxiety,
- 15:29Speaker 3: teammates need somebody something to help Now, it's at your

- 16:25Speaker 1: Right, our final segment of this quick show today, because
- 16:28Speaker 1: we'll have so much to break down after a Sunday's game.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Hopefully, hopefully it's a good one. What's up with Jordan Walker?
- 16:34Speaker 1: We talked about players that need to take an opportunity
- 16:37Speaker 1: or take advantage of this final opportunity of the season.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Jordan Walker is right up there. If I read you
- 16:41Speaker 2: his stats on the season, I'm not quite sure he'll
- 16:43Speaker 2: be super impressed. Let's get to it. On the year.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Coming into play on Sunday, Jordan Walker is hitting uh
- 16:49Speaker 2: where is his average?
- 16:53Speaker 1: Jordan Walker is hitting two twenty nine with a two
- 16:55Speaker 1: to eighty five on base percentage and a three twenty
- 16:57Speaker 1: slug that's good for a six oh five ops a
- 17:00Speaker 1: seventy one ops plus. He has just four homers and
- 17:03Speaker 1: he has missed about a month of play with multiple
- 17:06Speaker 1: il stints. It has not been the year that the
- 17:09Speaker 1: Cardinals or Jordan himself have been hoping to see out
- 17:12Speaker 1: of him. This was supposed to be a big jump
- 17:14Speaker 1: forward for Jordan Walker. On Bernie Show Tuesdays on KMOX
- 17:18Speaker 1: the Gas House Gang, he has Ali Marmalon for thirty
- 17:21Speaker 1: minutes along with Chris Ronji Tom Ackerman.
- 17:23Speaker 2: It's a really good show.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I know we talk about it a lot here, but
- 17:25Speaker 1: I strongly strongly, strongly encourage Cardinals fans to go check
- 17:28Speaker 1: that out. It's every Tuesday at noon Central. Because you
- 17:31Speaker 1: get such an expansive excuse me, look into how the
- 17:36Speaker 1: manager of the Cardinals is viewing all these players. And
- 17:38Speaker 1: credit to Ali Marmle, he's as transparent as he is
- 17:40Speaker 1: on the show, as he is with us.
- 17:42Speaker 2: In his room every morning, every afternoon, whatever.
- 17:46Speaker 1: And he's talked about Jordan Walker. This is long winded explanation,
- 17:49Speaker 1: but I'm getting there. He talked about Jordan Walker last
- 17:51Speaker 1: week and said, you know, we're seeing things that are encouraging.
- 17:55Speaker 2: He's buying back in.
- 17:56Speaker 1: But it has been kind of a slow process. He
- 17:59Speaker 1: has played. We look at his August. Let's look at
- 18:03Speaker 1: his August. Let's take a small sample size. All right,
- 18:06Speaker 1: I'm seeing a lot of Oh, Jordan Walker is not
- 18:08Speaker 1: playing every day. He's not getting the runway stop that
- 18:12Speaker 1: Jordan Walker has played in fifteen games in August.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Okay, it's August twenty third, with a couple of op days,
- 18:18Speaker 2: He's played in fifteen games. That's the overwhelming majority.
- 18:20Speaker 1: He's sitting in those fifteen games two twenty six with
- 18:23Speaker 1: a five seventy ops one double one homer seventeen strikeouts. Okay,
- 18:29Speaker 1: that's very similar to his overall production on the year,
- 18:33Speaker 1: and it is not nearly good enough for the Cardinals,
- 18:36Speaker 1: who are hoping to develop a right handed hitter besides
- 18:39Speaker 1: Ivon Herrera this year. It has not been good enough
- 18:42Speaker 1: for Jordan Walker this year. And I'm not saying we're
- 18:43Speaker 1: giving up on him, because we're not. This is a
- 18:45Speaker 1: pro Jordan Walker podcast. It has been since spring training.
- 18:48Speaker 1: But this September, I'm not sure. While Newport has a
- 18:52Speaker 1: significant amount of pressure, like we just said, I don't
- 18:55Speaker 1: know if anyone's facing.
- 18:56Speaker 2: More than Jordan Walker.
- 18:58Speaker 1: And the only reason I would maybe say new Bar
- 19:00Speaker 1: is again because of the arbitration and the fact that
- 19:02Speaker 1: he's more of a trade candidate because of that than Walker.
- 19:05Speaker 1: But Walker simply has to take advantage of September. I
- 19:08Speaker 1: don't want to hear that he's not starting every day
- 19:10Speaker 1: so he's not getting his fair share of runway.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Do you know how many games Jordan Walker has played
- 19:14Speaker 2: this year? Okay, we'll go play appearances.
- 19:18Speaker 1: How many played appearances Jordan Walker has had this year?
- 19:20Speaker 1: Two hundred and ninety eight. All right, He's on pace
- 19:23Speaker 1: for probably about three hundred and seventy five of those
- 19:25Speaker 1: to finish the season. That is plenty of time and
- 19:29Speaker 1: a plenty substantial enough factor to declare what his season
- 19:32Speaker 1: was and what's fair to count on him going forward.
- 19:35Speaker 2: No, he's not in the starting lineup every day.
- 19:36Speaker 1: You know who else isn't in the starting lineup every
- 19:38Speaker 1: day or hasn't been until Arnada got injured, Nolan Gorman,
- 19:42Speaker 1: Lar's new bar. Okay, these guys, minus the exception of
- 19:45Speaker 1: Alec Burlason and Ivon Herrera, who have played their way
- 19:48Speaker 1: into consistent playing time every day. Your none of these
- 19:51Speaker 1: guys are going to be in the lineup every single
- 19:53Speaker 1: day because it's mathematically impossible. We've talked about this throughout
- 19:55Speaker 1: the entire season. We're seeing at work a little bit
- 19:58Speaker 1: more now because Arnada's on the il, which allows Borman
- 20:00Speaker 1: to play at thirds. The j City get consistent playing time,
- 20:03Speaker 1: and I do think that we're seeing some gradual improvements
- 20:05Speaker 1: with the jac's pitch selection and approach. But just because
- 20:08Speaker 1: Jordan Walker is playing let's say, five out of seven
- 20:11Speaker 1: games or four out of six games a week, does
- 20:12Speaker 1: not mean that he's not getting enough runway or not
- 20:14Speaker 1: getting enough playing time.
- 20:16Speaker 2: He's had plenty of that.
- 20:18Speaker 1: He's getting the most that he can given how the
- 20:19Speaker 1: roster is constructed. And if you want more playing time
- 20:22Speaker 1: for Jordan Walker, let's look at the roster construction and
- 20:24Speaker 1: place the blame there. It was never set up for
- 20:26Speaker 1: this runway season where either front office went out and
- 20:28Speaker 1: promised things that they could not do mathematically. Okay, what
- 20:32Speaker 1: is in Jordan Walker's control and what is in the
- 20:34Speaker 1: Cardinals control is making sure that he's in the best
- 20:37Speaker 1: position to succeed in September. And that is a two
- 20:40Speaker 1: way street. It is not just on Olie Marmel, Bran Brown,
- 20:44Speaker 1: John Jay to make sure Jordan Walker succeeds. It's also
- 20:47Speaker 1: on Jordan Walker to make those adjustments, to listen to
- 20:49Speaker 1: the feedback from the coaches, to decide what works for
- 20:51Speaker 1: him from a prepping aspect, from an in game performance aspect,
- 20:56Speaker 1: from a played approach aspect, that's on Jordan to decide.
- 20:58Speaker 2: That's on Jordan to listen to.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I think we're seeing him buy into that a little
- 21:02Speaker 1: bit more, definitely more than we have in prior seasons.
- 21:05Speaker 1: But he has to finish strong otherwise him Bloom in
- 21:07Speaker 1: the front office will have very difficult decisions to make
- 21:10Speaker 1: when it comes to Jordan Walker's future. So let's manifest
- 21:13Speaker 1: some good things for these Cardinals as they looked for
- 21:16Speaker 1: some answers on what their career looks like for twenty
- 21:19Speaker 1: twenty six and beyond. Jordan Walker, Lars Newbar, the spotlight
- 21:23Speaker 1: is indeed on you. That's all I got from you
- 21:26Speaker 1: for the Sunday morning edition of Cardinal Territory. Again, like
- 21:29Speaker 1: I said earlier, Bernie Michlsson and I'll be back to
- 21:31Speaker 1: break down what is hopefully a series win. Keep our
- 21:33Speaker 1: fingers crossed, and then we'll have some discussions about what
- 21:36Speaker 1: the week of the Nlcentral looks like as we head
- 21:39Speaker 1: into the final month of the season. That is crazy, guys,
- 21:43Speaker 1: I can't believe we have one month left together. The
- 21:45Speaker 1: good news for you is this Tampa Bay series was
- 21:47Speaker 1: my last off series of the season, so you and
- 21:50Speaker 1: I were stuck with each other pals.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Can't wait? All right, I'm Katie wo this is Cardinal's Territory.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Have a good Sunday. We will talk after the game.
