- 0:28Welcome in to another exciting episode of Real Biz.
- 0:31I am your host, Bubba Starts, and with me today is award winning writer, author, and advocate
- 0:36for the human animal bond, Susan Hartzler.
- 0:39Susan, welcome to the show.
- 0:41Thank you.
- 0:42Nice to be here, Bubba.
- 0:43It's my pleasure to have you.
- 0:45I know that we got to speak at length in our discovery call a few weeks ago, and I'm so glad
- 0:50that you, popped back on, so quickly.
- 0:54Not everyone gets right back in to have another long conversation with me, but, I'm glad you
- 1:00did.
- 1:00And I love what you're all about.
- 1:01We're huge animal lovers here at our, you know, in our household.
- 1:06We were talking about our cats.
- 1:08But you have some really interesting books and stuff that we're gonna talk about today.
- 1:12But before we get into that, I wanna just kinda give you the floor and let you give us a little
- 1:16bit of your backstory, and we'll pick up the conversation from there.
- 1:20Okay.
- 1:21Well, let's see.
- 1:23My third grade teacher told me to be a writer.
- 1:26So I had that in my mind my whole life, and, I didn't get my I started off as the first female
- 1:34sports writer of my college newspaper.
- 1:36And my goal was to get into the boys' locker room, but they put me on women's sports.
- 1:41Oh, well, what are gonna do?
- 1:43But I didn't, get my first book published until I was 62, and that book is called I'm Not
- 1:49Single.
- 1:50I Have a Dog Dating Tales from the Bark Side.
- 1:53And then last year, I had another book published, The Peace Puppy, A Memoir of
- 1:57Caregiving and Canine Solace.
- 2:00And I have another book coming out this year.
- 2:03It's all about therapy dogs.
- 2:05And I also have a substack, Bliss Dog, where I write soul stories about dogs and my life with
- 2:14my two dogs.
- 2:14I've got two beautiful Australian shepherds, Seven and Paige Turner, and, they pretty much
- 2:21run my life.
- 2:22So, years ago, I I've always been a dog lover since I was a kid.
- 2:28My first dog, Siesta, was a chihuahua mutt, and, she taught me more about love than the
- 2:36humans in my life growing up.
- 2:37I just love that dog.
- 2:40She would she would sit in a little toy baby chair and eat for me, and she'd sleep in a
- 2:48little toy crib, and she was something else.
- 2:51I'd take her around in a baby buggy.
- 2:53She'd be upside down, and I'd knit hats for her and stuff.
- 2:57So it was pretty much love at first sight with dogs.
- 3:01And, ever since, I've been an advocate for the human animal bond, but now I've stepped it up.
- 3:07I'm a therapy dog a part of a therapy dog team with Seven and Page Turner now.
- 3:13And I also, for ten years, was an evaluator for therapy dogs.
- 3:18Now I have the book coming out.
- 3:19So I have a lot of experience with humans and dogs.
- 3:23I
- 3:24love it.
- 3:25I grew up in a dog household.
- 3:27We're a cat house now because the house is probably too small, to have an you know, bigger
- 3:33animals running around, although four cats is probably excessive as well.
- 3:37But but we, we love our boys.
- 3:40I am not saying anything to my wife, Danielle.
- 3:43If you're listening, you know I love our little our little men.
- 3:48But there's something special about those relationships that we have.
- 3:51Right?
- 3:52And for people that, you know, not only grew up with dogs but have had those companions over
- 3:58their life, we all know what it means.
- 4:00And and I don't know if it's I don't I I find it hard to explain sometimes the people that
- 4:05don't have those relationship with animals for whatever reason.
- 4:08And do you find in your, you know, experience that there's I don't know that there's a
- 4:16commonality between, like, dog lovers that do you find all dog lovers are kinda created, you
- 4:22know, equal or there's that bond that you you feel like you know someone when they have a
- 4:26dog?
- 4:27Because I I mean, I kinda feel that way.
- 4:29Right?
- 4:30Well,
- 4:33dog lovers are a wide spectrum of people.
- 4:37I mean, there's so much to love about dogs.
- 4:41I feel like when I meet them, I I do have something in common with them, but they're not
- 4:47all the same just like dogs aren't all the same.
- 4:50You know, there's dogs especially in today's world, there's so many things you can do with
- 4:55dogs.
- 4:55The trap traveling with dogs is is a huge market right now in the travel industry.
- 5:01People really are starting to do what I feel like I set the set the tone for years ago.
- 5:08Everybody would say, you're so weird about your dog.
- 5:10But now people are are embracing that and just you know, they especially in today's world, I I
- 5:17don't know if you've noticed, but there's all these, like, go pet a cow, go to this farm, go
- 5:22to this and people are doing that more today than ever because we're on screens.
- 5:28We're on, you know, not real life.
- 5:33And people want that real life, that nature, that mother nature.
- 5:37They wanna smell it.
- 5:38They wanna feel it.
- 5:39They wanna pet a llama or whatever.
- 5:41So it's it's really unnecessary.
- 5:44It's not an either or.
- 5:46I think cats and dogs, they're a necessary thing in many of our lives.
- 5:51I mean, I cannot imagine life without a dog.
- 5:53I just can't.
- 5:54No.
- 5:56I'm sure you can't.
- 5:57And the barking in the background is music to your ears.
- 6:00That's what Kate Stern is saying.
- 6:02I wanna be on the show.
- 6:04Yeah.
- 6:04Who are you talking to?
- 6:06What are you doing?
- 6:07Very curious.
- 6:09No.
- 6:09We love it.
- 6:10So tell me more about your first book and dating dating tales from the bark side.
- 6:18Well, you know, I never got married, and I always wanted to get married and have kids.
- 6:23And that never happened for me.
- 6:26So in my early forties, my mom died, and I moved home to take care of my dad who had
- 6:32Parkinson's.
- 6:33And I got involved in therapy dogs, and I went and visited kids at the county hospital in Los
- 6:41Angeles.
- 6:42And I realized if I'd had kids of my own, I might not have had the time or the the
- 6:47inclination to do this type of work that's really necessary.
- 6:52I mean, I've seen so many miracles with dogs in hospitals or at parks with special needs kids.
- 6:59I mean, it's just amazing.
- 7:01And with my new book about therapy dogs, I've got miracles from other people.
- 7:05I mean, it's just I call it a doggy sixth sense.
- 7:09They just know something that we don't know, and they can tap into something that we can't.
- 7:14And I don't know what it is.
- 7:16And I'm sure cats do too.
- 7:17I'm sure cats do too.
- 7:19But, you know, there's a saying, you own dogs, but cats own you.
- 7:22They decide whether or not they're gonna stay.
- 7:25Can confirm.
- 7:26Yes.
- 7:26Yes.
- 7:28So
- 7:31so that's you know, I I just I I don't I think it's really something that's necessary in our
- 7:38world, today, That unconditional love, that mother nature, that that I I don't know.
- 7:47I love everything about dogs.
- 7:49Yeah.
- 7:49The
- 7:50part The the visceral, you know, touching of another living thing, you know, with with human
- 7:56beings, especially post COVID being even more scared of other human beings and contact with
- 8:02another living thing in general that it's so important to, you know, pet a dog.
- 8:09Right?
- 8:09Like, go pet a dog, and it's okay.
- 8:11And
- 8:13Well and there's science behind that.
- 8:15There's science behind that that is proving that petting a dog is good for your health.
- 8:21I mean, it it boosts oxy oxycocin.
- 8:26Tocin, is that?
- 8:28Which is the feel good hormone.
- 8:30It reduces stress.
- 8:32It calms your heart.
- 8:34It lowers your blood pressure.
- 8:36Just petting a dog.
- 8:37Now there are studies saying that people that put a lot of dog pictures up on social media,
- 8:42just looking at a dog can or cat can offer those benefits.
- 8:47That's why people go so crazy about dog and cat videos because they actually are helping them
- 8:54feel better.
- 8:56Oh, I get a lot of cat videos now, Susan.
- 8:58Let me tell you.
- 8:59That's pretty much all I get on Messenger from my wife anymore are memes and reels of funny
- 9:06cat stories and, heartwarming ones as well.
- 9:10You mentioned the LA County Hospital.
- 9:12That's actually a building that I'm very familiar with, in my travels.
- 9:17Throughout my, throughout my early twenties, I had a good friend of mine who was receiving,
- 9:24you know, treatments, and, he had had, osteosarcoma, bone cancer, and we had to spend
- 9:31a lot of time in LA County trying to receive treatment.
- 9:35And and it's I know, especially in that building, how kind of, you know, depressing and
- 9:42oppressive it can be.
- 9:43It's an old building.
- 9:44Right?
- 9:44It's an old, you know, probably built in, what, the thirties or forties.
- 9:49Or Well, they do have
- 9:50a new campus now, but we did
- 9:52start with the
- 9:52old building.
- 9:53Yeah.
- 9:54Yeah.
- 9:54Even the new building, it's
- 9:57it's Well, and it's a hospital.
- 9:58My my wife kids.
- 10:01Seeing the kids, it's like, it breaks your heart.
- 10:05Nope.
- 10:05And we have a large medical, center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
- 10:09I have a good friend of mine in the music world that is always going in and playing music for,
- 10:14for the patients there.
- 10:16And to see what it does, especially to be in such an environment that, you know, my wife
- 10:22gets just going into the doctor's office for for not unrelated and not sick, it raises her
- 10:28blood pressure.
- 10:29So for someone who is sick and receiving treatment or or is not feeling well, it can be
- 10:35even more so.
- 10:36And especially when you talk about some of these children that are spending, you know,
- 10:40months months of their lives and not being able to leave, you know, because of, you know, a a
- 10:45diagnosis of a more severe case.
- 10:47And it it's so awesome that you are able to not just go in and to take part in that, but now to
- 10:53document that and to document some of the miracles that you've seen.
- 10:56I think that's so important that it will then spurn more of these kind of therapy sessions
- 11:02with the dogs.
- 11:03And, you know, for us, we work with a lot of veterans, operation combating veteran suicide,
- 11:08very near and dear to our hearts, but also another organization, out here in South Dakota,
- 11:15Guardian, Shepherd Dogs, and their German Shepherds who had worked as military service
- 11:22dogs.
- 11:22And now, you know, not just training them to be you know, to continue doing a job, but just a
- 11:28different kind of job.
- 11:29And and helping them and then connecting them with other veterans as well.
- 11:33So, we well, I love it.
- 11:35I I love that you're writing about it and sharing your stories with the world to educate
- 11:40more people on the not just therapeutic, but the scientifically proven therapeutic, benefits
- 11:46of having animals in our lives.
- 11:49One of the things that I'm doing on my Substack, and this just occurred to me when I
- 11:53started writing Substack, is, yes, there's therapeutic benefits, but no one knows how to
- 11:58tap into them.
- 11:59So I'm actually offering, like, meditations or rituals you can do.
- 12:05Like, if you you're feeling a panic attack coming on, if you just lie down next to your
- 12:09dog, touch them, sink in with their breathing, it can really it can really stop a panic
- 12:15attack.
- 12:16I mean, you've got the dog right there.
- 12:18I'm sure a cat's the same way.
- 12:19It's just it's
- 12:21A cat might give you a panic attack first, but
- 12:26That's true.
- 12:27They help my wife.
- 12:29I I've seen who she is.
- 12:31When she comes home, it's the first thing she does is grabs one of them and spends, you know,
- 12:35five, ten minutes after work relaxing with them.
- 12:38And it's made her a completely different human being.
- 12:40I can't completely.
- 12:42And each cat's kinda different.
- 12:44Not all not all the cats like to be picked up and held like that, but they have all have
- 12:48their times and dogs the same way, I'm sure.
- 12:51That's that's why one is never enough.
- 12:53Right?
- 12:54I I don't I have three myself.
- 12:56I wish I had a farm and could just have a million.
- 13:02You know?
- 13:03Yeah.
- 13:04Well
- 13:04humans anymore.
- 13:06So except for you, Bubba.
- 13:08Well, thank you.
- 13:08I appreciate that.
- 13:09Well, before I let you go, I'd love to have you share once again the Substack and where people
- 13:14can find the books, and I'll let you get out of here so you can go ease A lot.
- 13:20Paige Turner's nerves a little bit, and then let them know that everything's okay.
- 13:24Okay, Bubba.
- 13:25Well, my substack is bliss dog at bliss dog, b l I s s d o g, which was the name of my first
- 13:32Aussie bliss.
- 13:33And then my books, can get on my website, susanhartzler.comcomcom, susanhartzler.
- 13:43They're also available on Amazon, all booksellers.
- 13:49But the thing is if you put in I'm not single, I have a dog, you'll get T shirts and all sorts
- 13:54of things.
- 13:55So it's best if you're on Amazon to put in my name.
- 13:58And that book is coming out as an audiobook this spring.
- 14:02You'll be to
- 14:02order I'm Not Single this spring as an audiobook.
- 14:06Fantastic.
- 14:07Well, Susan, thanks for taking some time away from your beautiful animals to talk with me
- 14:12this morning.
- 14:13I wish you all the best.
- 14:14I'm looking forward to the new audiobook as well, and, thank you for being part of the
- 14:19scene.
- 14:19Papa.
- 14:20It was really fun.
- 14:21Thank you.
