- 0:03Speaker 1: Cal Poly is in session. Students swarm through campus and
- 0:06Speaker 1: file in and out of classes. They're thinking about the
- 0:08Speaker 1: chapter of reading they have tonight, their next class, their
- 0:11Speaker 1: new dorm, their senior project, how to get to the gym,
- 0:14Speaker 1: what's for dinner tonight? Where's the nearest bathroom?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Kate and I know.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Things can get a bit chaotic as a student navigating
- 0:22Speaker 1: the inns and out of college life.
- 0:25Speaker 2: At cal Poly, we focus on learning by doing, but
- 0:27Speaker 2: sometimes you don't know what to do well. Emma and
- 0:30Speaker 2: I are here to answer your who, what, when, where, why,
- 0:33Speaker 2: and how's here? On CP one oh one Learned by Listening,
- 0:36Speaker 2: presented by KCPR ninety one point three. Hi Mustang, I'm
- 0:40Speaker 2: Kate Lopenske, a fourth year journalism student.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And I'm Emma Hughes, a fourth year English student here
- 0:45Speaker 1: at cal Poly, and we're here to share our tell
- 0:47Speaker 1: all guide on how to survive and thrive at cal
- 0:50Speaker 1: Poly San Lucibispo. So grab a notebook you may want
- 0:53Speaker 1: to write this down.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Welcome back to a new season of CPEE one one.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Emma and I are so excited to be back.
- 1:08Speaker 1: It's true we can't wait to start dishing out the
- 1:10Speaker 1: juicy gossip and need to know info once again, speaking
- 1:14Speaker 1: of which, we have an exciting episode prepared for you today.
- 1:17Speaker 2: In the spirit of being back on campus and back
- 1:20Speaker 2: in college mode, we wanted to reminisce on our time
- 1:22Speaker 2: here so far at cal Poly and share our unique experiences,
- 1:26Speaker 2: which they're pretty unique.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Pretty pretty, pretty quirky and different. Seeing as this is
- 1:32Speaker 1: our last year here, we wanted to take the opportunity
- 1:34Speaker 1: to impart all our CP wisdom and also all the
- 1:37Speaker 1: things we still need to do before our graduation.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Don't don't make me cry, girl, Well that's right. This
- 1:42Speaker 2: episode is all about how to make the most of
- 1:44Speaker 2: your college experience. So let's dive in, all right, So
- 1:48Speaker 2: now we're going to reflect on each of our years
- 1:51Speaker 2: that we've had here at cal Poly and what we've learned. So, Emma,
- 1:54Speaker 2: how is your freshman year? That's not too you know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: like big of a topic to ask you about. It's
- 2:00Speaker 2: not too much of a.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Loaded question, only like the most chaotic year of my life,
- 2:04Speaker 1: But yeah, sure why not? Freshman year was just so
- 2:10Speaker 1: much all at once, Like there's no one word to
- 2:14Speaker 1: describe it. The best I can do is like chaotic,
- 2:17Speaker 1: wild and just everything. Like I feel like I was
- 2:20Speaker 1: doing everything I could trying to find.
- 2:22Speaker 2: You know, find myself and.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Like figure out who I was going to be for
- 2:26Speaker 1: the next four years.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean we lived together, not like in the
- 2:32Speaker 2: same room, but we lived in the same building, so
- 2:36Speaker 2: we kind of experienced all of that, like that crazy
- 2:39Speaker 2: shift together. And I mean I am an only child,
- 2:42Speaker 2: so I went from not having to share anything at all,
- 2:44Speaker 2: which bless to literally sharing a bathroom with forty people.
- 2:49Speaker 2: And I mean it was co ed as well, so
- 2:52Speaker 2: it wasn't fun like getting up in the morning and
- 2:54Speaker 2: seeing some beard hairs in the same you love beard hairs. Yeah, yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 2: cells down my spine, girl, But I mean, yeah, you
- 3:03Speaker 2: lived on the third.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Floor, yeah, third four women. Yeah, different story. Third floor
- 3:07Speaker 1: was the nunnery because there was just far more women
- 3:10Speaker 1: in the dorms, so we called it, yep, yeah, the nuns. Yeah.
- 3:15Speaker 1: So my like shared living experience was actually pretty pretty solid.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I mean we just kind of had a blast. Like
- 3:21Speaker 1: doors were open, everyone knew each other. Even the common
- 3:24Speaker 1: spaces were pretty like fun. I know Red Bricks specifically
- 3:28Speaker 1: has ping pong table, one of them has a foodsball table,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and there was a little war between the dorms. I
- 3:35Speaker 1: don't know the dormer nyan, you'r had some beef, but
- 3:39Speaker 1: also like a pool table TVs. Someone had their switch
- 3:44Speaker 1: controllers that they left down there, like there was just
- 3:47Speaker 1: always something happening.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Let's not age ourselves with this though. Oh my gosh, Okay,
- 3:51Speaker 2: that's true. But yeah, I mean freshman year was definitely intimidating.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I was super shy, fun fact, I know, crazy right,
- 3:59Speaker 2: and so I kind of dove headfirst into Greek life.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Shout out, that's a gamma. That was actually really great
- 4:06Speaker 2: for me because I was able to get myself way
- 4:08Speaker 2: out of my comfort zone pretty much. For that reason,
- 4:11Speaker 2: I'm who I'm, I'm who I am today.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Okay, period, She's a little sorority gal for me. I
- 4:17Speaker 1: actually started freshman year off with KCPR, like that was
- 4:21Speaker 1: my stick. I applied when I was still in high school,
- 4:25Speaker 1: still at home, and got it and I was like, Okay,
- 4:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna go and write some articles. I wasn't doing podcasts,
- 4:32Speaker 1: but that was kind of my whole thing. And then
- 4:35Speaker 1: you know, I got to meet all these cool people
- 4:38Speaker 1: and also just even just living in the dorm and
- 4:41Speaker 1: attending classes, you meet so many new people exactly, and
- 4:45Speaker 1: you have to really figure out like, Okay, is this
- 4:48Speaker 1: person gonna be my best friend?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Are they gonna be just my classmate?
- 4:52Speaker 1: Are they gonna be you know, someone that is just
- 4:54Speaker 1: an acquaintance who like I see and say hi to,
- 4:57Speaker 1: but don't really you know, take that friendship further. It
- 5:02Speaker 1: was definitely a trying time of just like who am I,
- 5:05Speaker 1: where do I stand? And then who are all these
- 5:07Speaker 1: new people and where do they stand in my life
- 5:09Speaker 1: as well?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Exactly. Yeah, so freshman year was pretty much just like
- 5:12Speaker 2: about dipping your toes in the water saying where you
- 5:14Speaker 2: fit in, which that's what we were all trying to
- 5:16Speaker 2: do there. And then sophomore year was even a bit
- 5:20Speaker 2: scarier for me personally because it was just all about
- 5:23Speaker 2: adjusting to living off campus and having to be a
- 5:25Speaker 2: full functioning adult right while being like a college student.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Freshman year, everything is taken care of.
- 5:30Speaker 1: All you, and freshman year's more so in my opinion
- 5:33Speaker 1: about the social life, Like, yes, it's totally new academically,
- 5:38Speaker 1: but also you're taking mostly ge classes. You're not yet
- 5:43Speaker 1: into your major classes, or if you are, there's still
- 5:46Speaker 1: like the rudimentary ones, and then sophomore year, all of
- 5:49Speaker 1: a sudden, it's like, let's remove you from this new
- 5:51Speaker 1: stasis you've been in, put you in, you know, living
- 5:55Speaker 1: off campus or even just living in PCV or SARO,
- 5:58Speaker 1: which is still slightly removed, and like even still they're
- 6:01Speaker 1: also apartments, so it's navigating a whole new roommate structure
- 6:06Speaker 1: and system, and then commuting to campus is suddenly on
- 6:10Speaker 1: the table.
- 6:11Speaker 2: How do you navigate that?
- 6:13Speaker 1: How do you hang out with friends who you aren't
- 6:15Speaker 1: seeing every day in your dorm.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Hall exactly, Like it kind of forces you to put
- 6:20Speaker 2: more effort into those friendships.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Sophomore year for me definitely really solidified my friend group.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah. By sophomore year, it's like, okay, so you're gonna
- 6:28Speaker 2: be one of my future bridesmaids. Uh huh, yeah, tour
- 6:31Speaker 2: like that, those deeper friendships and connections, and then I
- 6:34Speaker 2: don't know, just my sophomore year was more about like
- 6:37Speaker 2: budgeting my money. Like true, when we were living on campus,
- 6:41Speaker 2: we could just mosey on over to veg Oh my god,
- 6:44Speaker 2: fvegi Eg.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, well and it was all fake money, yeah exactly, Whereas.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Now we had access to Hellelujah Trader. Joe's right. I'm like, oh,
- 6:58Speaker 2: where did all my money go? For the money, I
- 7:00Speaker 2: have no idea. Mister Joe took it. Actually, yeah, he snatched.
- 7:04Speaker 2: He snatched all my cash. So I mean, but we
- 7:08Speaker 2: kind of.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Needed that, right, It's like that next level of adulting.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Like college is like you're away from your parents, your family,
- 7:16Speaker 1: You're now like your own human being, and then sophomore
- 7:18Speaker 1: year is like whoa, Like it's all on you to
- 7:22Speaker 1: figure out and it's all on you to like make
- 7:24Speaker 1: sure you're doing everything you need to be, including grocery shopping,
- 7:28Speaker 1: which shameless plug. We have a how to Grocery Shop episode.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Go check it out if you need cues for that.
- 7:34Speaker 2: That one was funny. You can hear all about Emma's
- 7:36Speaker 2: weird food habits. Yeah sorry in advance. She's kind of gross.
- 7:40Speaker 2: She's a freak.
- 7:41Speaker 1: But yeah, like it's still totally new. Like sophomore year,
- 7:44Speaker 1: your friendship's a little more solidified, you're getting into classes
- 7:47Speaker 1: that's a little more solidified, but it's still a totally
- 7:50Speaker 1: new living situation.
- 7:51Speaker 2: And that's why I personally loved junior year so much.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I just felt like I really hit my stride. I
- 7:57Speaker 2: was able to really focus on the things that I
- 7:59Speaker 2: wanted to best. My time in my friendships were feeling great.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I was settled into my housing, and I mean that
- 8:06Speaker 2: makes me even more excited for senior year, because what
- 8:09Speaker 2: does this year hold.
- 8:11Speaker 1: No, I completely agree. Junior year definitely was my most
- 8:15Speaker 1: constant year thus far. Like again, freshman year, sophomore year,
- 8:19Speaker 1: it's still crazy, it's still new. Junior year, it's like
- 8:22Speaker 1: now you can kind of focus on academics and you're
- 8:25Speaker 1: in your major courses and you're really getting into like
- 8:29Speaker 1: the nitty gritty of what you love and what you
- 8:31Speaker 1: might want to do for the rest of your life potentially.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So it was fun to navigate that space with my
- 8:38Speaker 1: close friends. We're doing what we want to do, we're
- 8:40Speaker 1: figuring out where we want to go with this, and
- 8:43Speaker 1: we're also just having fun together being like little galpals.
- 8:49Speaker 1: It being so real though, like we would do like
- 8:51Speaker 1: little family dinner nights and like we did like a
- 8:55Speaker 1: Christmas party, Like it was a lot more low key,
- 8:58Speaker 1: Like freshman year is so crazy with like you have
- 9:01Speaker 1: to explore the frat scene and you want to explore
- 9:03Speaker 1: every club on campus, and I totally understand that impulse.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I was there, I did it.
- 9:09Speaker 1: But junior year it's like you know where you're at,
- 9:11Speaker 1: you know what you want to do, and you're just
- 9:13Speaker 1: you get to live in that space and do it.
- 9:15Speaker 2: But I mean, let's not fail to mention the bars though.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Oh that's true. That's a big change as well.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Right, Also, shameless plug, check out how to barcrow because
- 9:26Speaker 1: we've been there.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Done that. Yeah. Well, I'm so grateful for every single
- 9:32Speaker 2: year and how my interests have shifted and changed and
- 9:35Speaker 2: my priorities have changed as well. And I am like
- 9:39Speaker 2: learning to be a real person, I know.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And yeah, this year, even just walking around campus, I
- 9:46Speaker 1: feel so old and I'm like everyone here I can
- 9:50Speaker 1: look around and be like, I know, y'all are younger
- 9:52Speaker 1: than me, Like there's at least a seventy five percent
- 9:54Speaker 1: chance that you are younger than me.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yeah, our dating pool is shrunk.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I know.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's very very sad. But what can you do?
- 10:03Speaker 2: Hashtags still single out here? Well, I mean, in conclusion,
- 10:07Speaker 2: just like it gets better every single year, so yes,
- 10:11Speaker 2: hold out faith. I know, like freshman year can just
- 10:14Speaker 2: be so like I said, over stimulating and daunting, and
- 10:18Speaker 2: luckily there are those things like sororities and clubs and
- 10:21Speaker 2: dorms that help foster those social connections that you're gonna
- 10:24Speaker 2: have for the rest of your time in college. And
- 10:26Speaker 2: I'm gonna forever be grateful for every single thing that
- 10:29Speaker 2: I was involved in freshman year because it gave me,
- 10:31Speaker 2: like my best friends, and I wouldn't do anything differently, but.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Hey, and now it's like we got to see where
- 10:37Speaker 1: that kind of took us, because now we're going into
- 10:40Speaker 1: our senior year last year and it's like, oh, we
- 10:44Speaker 1: have to squeeze everything in while we.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Still can exactly. And I mean, now that we've touched
- 10:49Speaker 2: on our years here, let's get a little bit more
- 10:51Speaker 2: specific about what we've done on campus and around slow
- 10:54Speaker 2: I mean, just so you can get an idea of
- 10:57Speaker 2: things that you could possibly get involved in, because there
- 10:59Speaker 2: could be something that then I do that you're like, WHOA,
- 11:02Speaker 2: that's actually pretty fun, because.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I mean we've kind of done it all. That's pretty cool. Yeah.
- 11:07Speaker 2: So yeah, Emma, what have you learned about, like through
- 11:09Speaker 2: the things that you've been involved with, because you've done
- 11:11Speaker 2: quite a.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Bit, Like thinking back on what I've done, I feel
- 11:14Speaker 1: like I'm a nerd, Like that's really what it's taught
- 11:17Speaker 1: me because everything I've done, I feel like, is like academic. Obviously,
- 11:22Speaker 1: first of all, we both are here doing KCPR. It's
- 11:25Speaker 1: such a unique opportunity and such a great radio station.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And that's like my one cool little thing that I've done,
- 11:34Speaker 1: Like that's my club that I'm like, yes, this is cool.
- 11:36Speaker 2: This is for the people. You're cool. But talk about
- 11:39Speaker 2: like your master's work and all that, because I think
- 11:41Speaker 2: that's a flex I mean.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'm currently getting my master's degree on top
- 11:47Speaker 1: of my undergrad working at them both at the same time,
- 11:51Speaker 1: which is crazy.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I'm alsort of.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Like I'm actually a professor right now for the English
- 11:58Speaker 1: one thirty four class. If my students are listening, love
- 12:01Speaker 1: you all guys, do your homework. Yeah, go go do
- 12:04Speaker 1: your homework. And if you didn't show up to class day,
- 12:06Speaker 1: you know who you are. But yeah, so I'm currently
- 12:09Speaker 1: teaching a course, which is really cool because teaching is
- 12:11Speaker 1: actually what I want to do with the rest of
- 12:13Speaker 1: my life. So again, we touched on junior year, like
- 12:15Speaker 1: you figure it out, you settle in senior year. Now
- 12:18Speaker 1: I'm like I'm doing it like, I'm really here living life,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and I also am working as a TA for a professor.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I did it over the summer. I did a.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Research project which was really cool. I was like recording
- 12:31Speaker 1: audio books four other English classes that I have done.
- 12:35Speaker 1: So it's really immersing me in my major, I was
- 12:38Speaker 1: a tutor here on campus. I work at the Children's Center.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And then also I was the nerd who started cal
- 12:45Speaker 1: Poly early through the quarter plus program, which is just
- 12:48Speaker 1: extended education. You come a month early and get some
- 12:52Speaker 1: coursework over with. But I wasn't the only nerd because
- 12:56Speaker 1: one little miss Kate.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Also did it. I did, but I was virtual. Yeah,
- 13:00Speaker 2: all great things, but enough about me. What about U Kate? Okay?
- 13:04Speaker 2: So yeah, like I said, I am involved in a
- 13:07Speaker 2: sorority right now, I am on excuse status because I
- 13:11Speaker 2: am just so busy with I mean, KCPR obviously a priority.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I absolutely love it. I've been wanting to get into
- 13:19Speaker 2: podcasting since high school, so this has just been awesome.
- 13:22Speaker 2: I started off as a content writer, same thing as Emma.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Same Yeah, we were writing articles at the beginning, but
- 13:28Speaker 2: then we were like, you know what, we like to
- 13:29Speaker 2: talk more than.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Right, we are yappers, which I didn't think that.
- 13:33Speaker 2: There would be anything else that I liked more than writing.
- 13:35Speaker 2: But hello, here we are.
- 13:37Speaker 1: You're like I did the academic stuff. I don't know
- 13:40Speaker 1: why you did all the cool stuff. Let's talk about up.
- 13:43Speaker 2: And Up or some of your DJ sessions. Yes, I
- 13:48Speaker 2: am deeply involved in the Stanley Lewisavispo EDM scene. So
- 13:53Speaker 2: I'm one of the lead ambassadors for cal Poly Up
- 13:55Speaker 2: and Up Woo Woo. It's the number one college music
- 13:59Speaker 2: festival circuit in all of the nation and pretty much
- 14:02Speaker 2: schools from across the country compete to win an EDM
- 14:05Speaker 2: performance at their school or in their community. So we
- 14:09Speaker 2: won last quarter we Want the Spring with Disco Lines,
- 14:12Speaker 2: and this year we also placed first and won Matroda
- 14:15Speaker 2: And that's all it is, Yes, it is, let's be real.
- 14:21Speaker 2: But and then I also work for sub Sessions Slow,
- 14:24Speaker 2: which is a new EDM collective, and we're going to
- 14:29Speaker 2: start throwing shows here pretty soon, which is really really exciting.
- 14:32Speaker 2: We're collaborating with KCPR actually for the Boiler Bang on November.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Two, be there or B Square exactly.
- 14:39Speaker 2: So I mean, I've learned that I absolutely love being
- 14:44Speaker 2: a part of the entertainment industry and I'm really trying
- 14:46Speaker 2: to hone in my skills on that. And then also,
- 14:49Speaker 2: I studied abroad this summer. I was in Italy for
- 14:53Speaker 2: a month and that actually really changed my perspective on
- 14:57Speaker 2: postgrad and adventure and all that stuff. And I know
- 15:01Speaker 2: that studying abroad is really expensive and it's quite the commitment,
- 15:04Speaker 2: but I highly highly recommend it if you are even
- 15:07Speaker 2: considering it in the slightest because I am now making
- 15:11Speaker 2: plans to move to Italy after I graduate. Fingers crossed
- 15:14Speaker 2: it works out she's leaving us. I know, I know
- 15:17Speaker 2: it would it would be for less than a year,
- 15:19Speaker 2: but I kind of have a gig in the works,
- 15:23Speaker 2: so we'll see. But yeah, like all of these things
- 15:27Speaker 2: that I've been a part of have really shaped who
- 15:29Speaker 2: I am, and like not to mention just all of
- 15:30Speaker 2: my involvement within my major. Right, I've been able to
- 15:34Speaker 2: write articles and learn how to use camera equipment and
- 15:37Speaker 2: sound editing and all the Adobe applications, and I mean, sure,
- 15:41Speaker 2: I don't know what I'm doing at the time, but
- 15:44Speaker 2: we figured out. I mean, we can relate on the
- 15:47Speaker 2: fact that we were very much just like thrown into
- 15:50Speaker 2: our majors and we fully embraced it.
- 15:52Speaker 1: I know, like if I told freshman, my freshman yourself
- 15:57Speaker 1: everything that I've done, she'd probably.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Think I was. I know, we're just busy women.
- 16:03Speaker 1: But also, on top of all of these fun, lovely
- 16:07Speaker 1: extra curriculars that we've done, we haven't shirked our cow
- 16:11Speaker 1: poly traditions and let loose a little. So let's talk
- 16:16Speaker 1: about some of our fave cow Po slow town festivities.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Another plug on the Saint Friday's episode. Go listen to
- 16:25Speaker 2: that because that is my favorite San Luis Obispo tradition,
- 16:28Speaker 2: and I know that it's up there for you too. Yeah,
- 16:30Speaker 2: how could it not be? I love Saint Fridy's because
- 16:33Speaker 2: it just puts everyone in one place.
- 16:35Speaker 1: You cannot go anywhere else to get this. They you
- 16:38Speaker 1: might celebrate Saint Patrick's, stay somewhere else, but this is
- 16:42Speaker 1: Saint Friddy's. And it's not even about the Frats. It's
- 16:45Speaker 1: not Greek life, it's not centered around that. That might
- 16:49Speaker 1: have been like the start or the inspiration. But it's
- 16:52Speaker 1: literally just wear green, hit Halfway Street and you are
- 16:56Speaker 1: in it. That is pure cow poly culture for better word.
- 17:01Speaker 2: I also went to the cal Poly versus UCSB soccer
- 17:04Speaker 2: game last year, and that was a lot of fun.
- 17:07Speaker 1: That's because people from Santa Barbara will come and it's
- 17:10Speaker 1: like our rivals low key doesn't even matter about the sport,
- 17:14Speaker 1: like it's just it's cal Poly versus Santa Barbara and
- 17:18Speaker 1: you get to see that kind of fun little tension
- 17:21Speaker 1: and feel the vibes and it's super hype. Another tradition
- 17:24Speaker 1: that I definitely want to touch on is hallow Weekend.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I think this happens at other campuses as well, but
- 17:32Speaker 1: for some reason, cal Poly just goes hard. We're not
- 17:35Speaker 1: by definition of party school. However, give us a holiday
- 17:39Speaker 1: and we'll turn up and turn out.
- 17:41Speaker 2: We are very like holiday centric.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Yes, and Hallowekeen is no exception.
- 17:46Speaker 2: No, I'm like trying to request time off from work
- 17:48Speaker 2: right now, like exactly seriously, we take it okay. Bringing
- 17:53Speaker 2: it back another fun like kind of party esque tradition
- 17:56Speaker 2: here that we have our twenty first birthday bark Crawls.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Like we said, we have that episode, so go back
- 18:01Speaker 2: and listen to that for more of an idea of
- 18:03Speaker 2: what happens there.
- 18:05Speaker 1: And that's another thing that is kind of specific to
- 18:07Speaker 1: cal Poly. Like I didn't realize that only cow Poly
- 18:11Speaker 1: really goes full out with the signs.
- 18:14Speaker 2: It's not the thing to be like sappy and emotional about.
- 18:17Speaker 2: But like, I'm gonna remember my Barcral for the rest
- 18:19Speaker 2: of my right. And now let's get into some of
- 18:22Speaker 2: like our food traditions here, right, Okay, So we have
- 18:27Speaker 2: high Street and Firestone two like the biggest sandwich spots here.
- 18:31Speaker 2: I am personally a high Street girl. I know that
- 18:34Speaker 2: Firestones big thing is the Tritips sandwich, which is a
- 18:37Speaker 2: tough thing when you don't eat red meat. Oops. Oops.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Other little things we have like slow Doco. The donuts
- 18:44Speaker 1: are so cute and now they're open twenty four hours
- 18:46Speaker 1: so it's become a study spot.
- 18:48Speaker 2: It is so busy with just people on their laptop
- 18:50Speaker 2: right all the time. Yeah, and it feels special too, yeah,
- 18:54Speaker 2: I mean, I yeah, guilty. It's honestly such a productive space.
- 18:59Speaker 1: We also of the cal Poly Creamery, which just like
- 19:03Speaker 1: I don't even know if I've specifically gone there, but
- 19:06Speaker 1: I know I've had cow Poly cheese and ice cream
- 19:08Speaker 1: and all that jazz, and it just it feels like
- 19:11Speaker 1: something you should do before.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Again, I don't eat any dairy products, right, What about chocolate. Yeah.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I have had the cow poly chocolate hey go. Yeah, yeah,
- 19:21Speaker 2: I've included also Poi Wine. I like the jam as well.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Oh yes, yes, yes alaa berry jam so yes, okay yeah,
- 19:28Speaker 2: and then we have some really fun venues here. So
- 19:30Speaker 2: like at the Fremont, I know that they have been
- 19:33Speaker 2: really stepping up their game in terms of shows. Oh definitely. Yeah.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Like I saw Max Styler there, who is a DJ.
- 19:41Speaker 2: So that was really fun, and like they're just constantly
- 19:43Speaker 2: bringing in different types of entertainment. I know that they
- 19:46Speaker 2: had like a Shrek Rave there. I was there there.
- 19:48Speaker 2: I was at the Shrek Grave dressed as Shrek. That's
- 19:51Speaker 2: so fun. Ye been there, lived through it. I like
- 19:54Speaker 2: slow Brew as well. That's another really fun I saw
- 19:58Speaker 2: Proxima Purana there.
- 19:59Speaker 1: One of my best slowbre is a classic for sure.
- 20:02Speaker 1: And then another fun spot for concerts or other things
- 20:06Speaker 1: even just dinner or dessert is Madonna in Yeah, like
- 20:10Speaker 1: that is so slow coded.
- 20:12Speaker 2: That's why show is going to be actually at the Expo. Yeah,
- 20:15Speaker 2: it's a really huge space. Yeah, it's kind of crazy
- 20:18Speaker 2: too because Madonna is just like this little kind of
- 20:22Speaker 2: like cheesy touristy. Oh totally like mom and pop place.
- 20:26Speaker 2: But then at the same time they have this huge
- 20:28Speaker 2: venue where like you can throw shows.
- 20:30Speaker 1: The Rodeo happens over there. They do a Tesla convention
- 20:33Speaker 1: that Elon Musk has been at. Madonna ends like a
- 20:37Speaker 1: spot to go and you can just pull up and
- 20:38Speaker 1: grab a piece of cake. Another go to classic is
- 20:42Speaker 1: all of the beaches around Slow.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Yeah, do you have a favorite beach?
- 20:47Speaker 1: I mean, my heart's an Avla always like that's the
- 20:51Speaker 1: college beach that will forever be college to me?
- 20:55Speaker 2: Is Ama beach facts. Now, Emma, I'm curious, since we're seniors,
- 20:59Speaker 2: is there anything left on your col poly bucket list
- 21:02Speaker 2: or your Slow bucket list that you still have to
- 21:04Speaker 2: do before you graduate?
- 21:06Speaker 1: Actually, yes, I know that everyone does a grad bar
- 21:10Speaker 1: crawl before their graduation. So like you wake up if
- 21:14Speaker 1: you're graduating early in the morning or in the afternoon,
- 21:17Speaker 1: you wake up kind of early, and all the bars
- 21:19Speaker 1: are open, and you go out with your parents, your friends,
- 21:22Speaker 1: your supporters, and you just kind of get a little
- 21:26Speaker 1: a little drunk before graduation.
- 21:28Speaker 2: When I tell you that my parents have already started planning,
- 21:31Speaker 2: they are so excited.
- 21:32Speaker 1: It's so cute, right, and it's it's a fun time
- 21:35Speaker 1: to reminisce with your friends, but also to include your
- 21:38Speaker 1: family in that and kind of share a little bit
- 21:40Speaker 1: of slow with them.
- 21:42Speaker 2: I still really need to do the try Tip challenge
- 21:44Speaker 2: same just because I love hiking, but the thought of
- 21:47Speaker 2: doing all of them consecutively like makes you want to
- 21:50Speaker 2: throw up. Okay.
- 21:52Speaker 1: One thing that I still haven't done is go to
- 21:54Speaker 1: Shippang really okay. Yeah, so that's another col Poly like
- 21:58Speaker 1: tradition thing to do and slow and I just haven't
- 22:02Speaker 1: done it.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Yeah. So Shabang is like our local music festival. It's
- 22:05Speaker 2: like the San Luis Obispo Coachella. I just love how
- 22:08Speaker 2: like intimate it is. It's a good sized festival ground.
- 22:12Speaker 2: I already bought my early bird tickets, so if you
- 22:14Speaker 2: decide to go, I will see you there. Yeah. I
- 22:17Speaker 2: need to do that.
- 22:18Speaker 1: And also, if you're like me haven't been in considering going,
- 22:21Speaker 1: check out our how to Shabang episode because we covered
- 22:24Speaker 1: that as well.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Well.
- 22:26Speaker 1: That's all the time we have for today. One last
- 22:29Speaker 1: piece of advice, to quote the one and only Professor Gearhart,
- 22:33Speaker 1: most of the learning you will do here at cal
- 22:34Speaker 1: Poly will be outside the classroom, so don't be afraid
- 22:37Speaker 1: to get outside, touch grass and have some fun.
