- 0:53Speaker 1: and J. T. O'Sullivan. The Bengals Booth Podcast is presented

- 1:13Speaker 1: It's the greatest thing since snack sized candy bars. There's
- 1:19Speaker 1: a lot of candy left over in the Hoarde household
- 1:21Speaker 1: after Halloween, and it's all what's labeled on the bag
- 1:25Speaker 1: as snack sized. I'll admit it, we're not the much
- 1:29Speaker 1: loved house in the neighborhood that hands out full sized
- 1:32Speaker 1: candy bars on Halloween, but we do give each kid
- 1:35Speaker 1: a few different snack sized bars for the variety. The
- 1:39Speaker 1: point of all this is that I don't really need
- 1:42Speaker 1: a full sized candy bar. For example, one Reese's peanut
- 1:46Speaker 1: buttercup does the trick and I don't feel guilty for
- 1:50Speaker 1: eating it. Of course, with all of the leftover candy
- 1:53Speaker 1: we have in the house, I wind up grabbing several
- 1:55Speaker 1: over the course of the day, But at least in theory,
- 1:58Speaker 1: the snack sized candy bar is perfectly satisfying. Now let's
- 2:03Speaker 1: get to football. The Bengals hit the halfway point of
- 2:06Speaker 1: the season with a record of two five and one,
- 2:09Speaker 1: but the second half includes several games that look extremely winnable,
- 2:14Speaker 1: as they faced the two and five Washington Football team,
- 2:17Speaker 1: the two and six Cowboys, the one in six Texans,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and the one and seven Giants. And keep in mind
- 2:24Speaker 1: that the Bengals took the lead to the fourth quarter
- 2:26Speaker 1: in six of their first eight games, so a strong
- 2:29Speaker 1: second half seems very possible. This is the Bengals by week,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and it was also NFL trade deadline week. The deadline
- 2:38Speaker 1: was Tuesday at four pm, and that's where I start
- 2:41Speaker 1: this week's conversation with my broadcast partner Dave Lappham. Big
- 2:46Speaker 1: news broke about eleven minutes after the deadline. The Bengals
- 2:49Speaker 1: have added Brian Allen to the practice squad. He's appeared
- 2:54Speaker 1: in seventeen NFL games. So that was the only news
- 2:57Speaker 1: on the day of the trade deadline. It came and went,
- 3:01Speaker 1: John Ross is still here? Were you surprised? Not shocked,
- 3:06Speaker 1: not totally shocked, because honestly, as we saw with the
- 3:09Speaker 1: offensive line, he's an injury away from being a factor,
- 3:13Speaker 1: you know. And and if you've got guys that know
- 3:15Speaker 1: your system and you can plug right in with COVID,
- 3:18Speaker 1: you know everything that goes along with bringing guys off
- 3:21Speaker 1: off of other football teams and brow the calls and everything,
- 3:24Speaker 1: you know. I guess number one, there was no value
- 3:29Speaker 1: that they are. There wasn't Nobody felt that he was
- 3:32Speaker 1: worth what the Bengals thought he was worth. Obviously if
- 3:34Speaker 1: they were trying to trade him and couldn't do it,
- 3:36Speaker 1: particularly with the fact that, Okay, if there is an injury,
- 3:39Speaker 1: we can use them, So you got to offer me
- 3:42Speaker 1: more than what you're offering, And maybe they didn't get
- 3:45Speaker 1: much of any offer at all. So they decided stand
- 3:48Speaker 1: pat and finished the season with John Ross and he'll
- 3:51Speaker 1: be going elsewhere after the season, and people are going
- 3:53Speaker 1: to be, oh, I didn't you move John Ross and
- 3:55Speaker 1: get something. You don't know what there was offered, if anything,
- 3:58Speaker 1: that's the big deal. That's the big question. So that's
- 4:01Speaker 1: and then Billy Price, you know, was another one that
- 4:03Speaker 1: people might have been thought thinking about a little bit.
- 4:05Speaker 1: And you just give him a game ball and he's
- 4:07Speaker 1: playing pretty well. Trey Hopkins, who was out there at
- 4:10Speaker 1: practice today. I stopped by after picking up some media
- 4:14Speaker 1: information for the football for the bye week in the
- 4:17Speaker 1: Pittsburgh upcoming football game, and Bobby Hart was on the
- 4:21Speaker 1: rehab field, Jonah Williams was on the rehab field, Joe
- 4:24Speaker 1: Mixon was on the rehab field, but Trey Hopkins was
- 4:27Speaker 1: out there doing things. They weren't doing much the part
- 4:30Speaker 1: of practice we're able to watch, but he was out
- 4:33Speaker 1: there as well as Michael Jordan was out there so
- 4:35Speaker 1: they were lining up at their respective positions, but without
- 4:39Speaker 1: those two tackles out there on the rehab field, he
- 4:41Speaker 1: had Identagy was lined up at the left tackle position
- 4:44Speaker 1: and Big Fred was lined up at the right tackle position.
- 4:46Speaker 1: As they were going through things early stages of practice.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Unfortunately this time of year, we can't watch much of practice,
- 4:53Speaker 1: but I would be very interested to know how John
- 4:55Speaker 1: Ross is going to handle this. He publicly has come
- 4:57Speaker 1: out asking for a trade. If you're not going to
- 5:00Speaker 1: use me, trade me, that's understandable. On the other hand,
- 5:04Speaker 1: is he going to mope? Is he going to show
- 5:06Speaker 1: up but go through the motions, or at some point
- 5:09Speaker 1: is he going to say, basically, screw you, I'm better
- 5:12Speaker 1: than Mike Thomas, or I'm better than Alex ericson whoever
- 5:16Speaker 1: he thinks he's better than in his own Maybe he
- 5:18Speaker 1: thinks he's better than Tyler Boy. Who knows, But is
- 5:20Speaker 1: he going to have that attitude? Do you know what,
- 5:22Speaker 1: I've got eight games left here, I'm going to be
- 5:25Speaker 1: a free agent at the end of this season. I'd
- 5:27Speaker 1: like to get a good offer from somebody. I'm going
- 5:30Speaker 1: to go out there bust my tail at practice in
- 5:32Speaker 1: hopes that maybe I'll get the opportunity to do something. Well.
- 5:36Speaker 1: I think his agent has probably said, look, the trade
- 5:39Speaker 1: deadline passed, you didn't get traded. Don't do anything to
- 5:43Speaker 1: hurt your value worse, you know, just go out and
- 5:46Speaker 1: do what they're asking you to do. He was out
- 5:47Speaker 1: there at practice today with a helmet and pads on,
- 5:50Speaker 1: just like everybody else. You know, the little little tiny
- 5:53Speaker 1: shoulder pads. It wasn't a physical day today obviously at all.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And you know, bottom line is if you do have
- 6:00Speaker 1: your opportunity, get ready to capitalize on it. The thing
- 6:03Speaker 1: that he should do is watch the offensive line. What
- 6:07Speaker 1: those guys did, all five of them get a chance
- 6:09Speaker 1: to shine. A four of the five. Alex Redmond hoop
- 6:13Speaker 1: I thought, played his best game of the year against Tennessee.
- 6:16Speaker 1: He was knocking people around, man, telling you he in
- 6:19Speaker 1: Spain when they were double teaming those down linemen. They
- 6:23Speaker 1: were moving those guys. And I'm telling you watching tape
- 6:26Speaker 1: prepping for that Tennessee Simmons was a load. People weren't
- 6:29Speaker 1: moving him. I mean they moved him against his will,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and they moved them on both sides of it, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 1: Spanning Redmond working Billy price. Oh man, it was like, yeah,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I like that. I'm telling you. Get a little movement boys,
- 6:42Speaker 1: make those linebackers have to move around things or put
- 6:45Speaker 1: them in their lap. That was all good. So take
- 6:48Speaker 1: your queue from them. Look at what they did. They
- 6:50Speaker 1: were ready. You know, they they practiced hard, they studied
- 6:54Speaker 1: in the meetings, they did the extra work trying to
- 6:58Speaker 1: get themselves better. When you're oportunity presents itself, capitalize. Don't
- 7:03Speaker 1: make be in a situation where you can't take advantage
- 7:06Speaker 1: of your opportunity because that's only going to enhance his
- 7:09Speaker 1: opportunity as a free agent if more than one team's
- 7:12Speaker 1: interested in you. When you're done with the Bengals, you know,
- 7:16Speaker 1: it's just market whatever the market will bear. Right now,
- 7:19Speaker 1: there wasn't much of a market, or it it wasn't much
- 7:20Speaker 1: on the market in terms of the Bengals eyes again
- 7:24Speaker 1: to say we're going to just let him go for
- 7:26Speaker 1: nothing or whatever and we're not going to cut him.
- 7:28Speaker 1: We'll wait till the season's over and see how it
- 7:31Speaker 1: all goes down. But you know, that's that's the nature
- 7:33Speaker 1: of the beast. That's the way it is in the
- 7:35Speaker 1: in the National Football League, and you know today he
- 7:39Speaker 1: was doing. He was over his illness. It was no
- 7:42Speaker 1: illness today. He was out there running around. Everything was fine,
- 7:46Speaker 1: no problems whatsoever. I wonder the Michael Jordan thing, though,
- 7:50Speaker 1: it's a little bit scary, you know, Michael Jordan. I
- 7:53Speaker 1: don't know if it flu, migraines, food poisoning, whatever it was.
- 7:57Speaker 1: But he ended up he went down there to the
- 7:59Speaker 1: stadium and they sent him to the hospital and it
- 8:02Speaker 1: wasn't COVID nineteen. They knew it wasn't COVID nineteen related.
- 8:04Speaker 1: He had tested and you know, there was nothing there,
- 8:06Speaker 1: but he had something cooking, something going on. So it
- 8:09Speaker 1: was a major issue. But he was out there today,
- 8:10Speaker 1: which was good. Good sign. Trey Hopkins in the early stages,
- 8:14Speaker 1: very early stages, he was kind of standing in the
- 8:16Speaker 1: back of everything, but he had his helmet on and
- 8:19Speaker 1: ready to go. And then once they started going through
- 8:21Speaker 1: some plays, he jumped right in there at his center position.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And you know, Billy Price was obviously they're doing his
- 8:30Speaker 1: work today, as was this is the guy that I'm
- 8:32Speaker 1: really intrigued b J. Finney. I wonder if he threw
- 8:35Speaker 1: they threw his name out there and said, you know what,
- 8:38Speaker 1: anybody interested in b J. Finney. You know, we don't
- 8:40Speaker 1: need three centers necessarily. They can all play guard, but
- 8:44Speaker 1: their best position is center. When Finney, you know, when
- 8:48Speaker 1: he jumped there in there for the Pittsburgh Steelers, I
- 8:51Speaker 1: mean they have a Pro Bowl center who goes down
- 8:53Speaker 1: and he steps in there. I thought he played his
- 8:55Speaker 1: tail off. I thought he played really well. So I
- 8:57Speaker 1: got a big deal from Seattle this offseason, no doubt,
- 9:00Speaker 1: no doubt. And for whatever reason, you know, it fell
- 9:03Speaker 1: apart out there. I think it was the same thing.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Spain signs a big deal, Finney signs a big deal.
- 9:08Speaker 1: They're not starters. Got a little ashy, sure, a little
- 9:11Speaker 1: bit of ancy, you know, between the and the and
- 9:13Speaker 1: the organization's side. Let's just move on. Well, suddenly there
- 9:17Speaker 1: is an action, actually a glut of offensive lineman. Who
- 9:20Speaker 1: would have thought that right on the Bengals roster. But
- 9:23Speaker 1: you got the four tackles Jonah, Bobby Hart, Fred Johnson
- 9:26Speaker 1: and Hikimadenagy. And then you've got this massive pile of
- 9:31Speaker 1: interior guys, Trey Hopkins, Billy Price, Michael Jordan, Alex Redmond,
- 9:36Speaker 1: Quentin Spain, b J. Finney, Xavier Sue Philo, is expected
- 9:39Speaker 1: to be back sometime soon. Keaton Sutherland still on the
- 9:43Speaker 1: main roster. Shaq Calhoun is back on the practice squad.
- 9:46Speaker 1: But that's nine interior guys. Now you can have veterans
- 9:51Speaker 1: on the practice squad. So yeah, so you can hold
- 9:54Speaker 1: onto these guys. But man, you get a lot of guys, right,
- 9:57Speaker 1: You can protect a number of your practice squad players
- 10:00Speaker 1: in Spain since you wasn't the practice squad active for
- 10:02Speaker 1: the game, went back to the practice squad. You know
- 10:04Speaker 1: they've gotten protected. Who knows how it all? And you know,
- 10:08Speaker 1: shakes down. Honestly, next week's practice is going to be
- 10:11Speaker 1: interesting because you know, there's two schools of thought and
- 10:16Speaker 1: here's here's the interesting dichotomy as such that the Bengals
- 10:20Speaker 1: are facing. Because I'm sure over the last year and
- 10:23Speaker 1: a half, the offensive line coaches would say saying to
- 10:26Speaker 1: the owners, we got to have we can't have this
- 10:30Speaker 1: revolving door, you know, left tackle, that was ridiculous. We
- 10:32Speaker 1: need to get five guys and let five guys work
- 10:35Speaker 1: together and five guys become one. You know, like you're
- 10:38Speaker 1: making a fist, four fingers, wrap the thumb, curl the
- 10:40Speaker 1: four fingers. That's the way we want to play. Now,
- 10:43Speaker 1: all of a sudden, you have five guys that show
- 10:45Speaker 1: up in this game and they show they can play. Well,
- 10:47Speaker 1: you know what, we'd like to play a lot of
- 10:48Speaker 1: guys because we get guys capable to play. And that's
- 10:51Speaker 1: the difference. When they were saying to the organ say
- 10:53Speaker 1: so we need to get five guys and hopefully live
- 10:56Speaker 1: through a five guy, they didn't have five guys. They
- 10:59Speaker 1: didn't have has to fill out an offensive line. Now
- 11:01Speaker 1: as you say there's a glut and these guys can
- 11:04Speaker 1: all play, and there's not. I don't think there's a
- 11:06Speaker 1: huge difference between hardly any of them. I think they're
- 11:09Speaker 1: all capable. In NFL starters, you can only have five
- 11:13Speaker 1: quote starters, and to me, starter it's it's so over
- 11:17Speaker 1: we're overused whatever. But I know it's contract related all that,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and it's dollars and cents. But if you have seven
- 11:24Speaker 1: or eight linemen that can play, play them, if they're
- 11:27Speaker 1: all good enough to play, play them, so all of
- 11:32Speaker 1: you know, it's like all right, Well, Michael Jordan, you
- 11:34Speaker 1: know you're gonna play the first three series Spain, You're
- 11:37Speaker 1: in for a series on the right side, you know,
- 11:40Speaker 1: Alex you're gonna go a couple of series, and Xavier,
- 11:43Speaker 1: you're gonna go a series, and then we'll see and
- 11:45Speaker 1: then just because if you have a if you have
- 11:47Speaker 1: a utility player in baseball who can play, you don't
- 11:51Speaker 1: go twenty twenty five games thought I'm doing anything. So
- 11:54Speaker 1: you have you have lineman that show they can play,
- 11:57Speaker 1: and that's good. So if a guy gets damed or
- 11:59Speaker 1: guys in effect, boom, you make a move. But if
- 12:03Speaker 1: everybody stays healthy and everybody's playing at a decent level,
- 12:05Speaker 1: don't let those guys rot on the bench. They showed
- 12:08Speaker 1: they can play. Let them go in there and stay sharp,
- 12:11Speaker 1: because God forbid, if something does happen to somebody, now
- 12:14Speaker 1: it wasn't just yeah that was a game, but well
- 12:16Speaker 1: that's a month ago. Man, You've got to knock off
- 12:18Speaker 1: the rust and dustin. So if you've got players that
- 12:23Speaker 1: a meritocracy, if you've got players that, during the course
- 12:26Speaker 1: of practice and then in game tape, have shown that
- 12:29Speaker 1: they should play in the National Football League, let them play.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I've seen situations in college football. They'll play ten guys,
- 12:37Speaker 1: they'll have two lines, they'll have shifts like in hockey.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Boom boom, the whole offensive line will shift. That's happened
- 12:44Speaker 1: in games that I've covered. So, I mean there's there's
- 12:46Speaker 1: two schools of thought, and I think the school that
- 12:49Speaker 1: you go to is based on how many students do
- 12:51Speaker 1: you have that can pass the test? You know, I mean,
- 12:54Speaker 1: if you have smart enough guys that can go play
- 12:57Speaker 1: and play well enough, let them play. Billy Price got
- 13:01Speaker 1: a game ball yep. After last week's victory over Tennessee.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Here's my question. How his his play in the last
- 13:07Speaker 1: two games compared to Trey Hopkins play before that. I think,
- 13:12Speaker 1: you know, solid, I think he's been solid, you know.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I think that the penalty issue is greater than him
- 13:17Speaker 1: down and rightfully, so, you know, you can't have holding penalties.
- 13:21Speaker 1: You can't be jumping, you know, as you pointed out
- 13:23Speaker 1: during the game, they went into the game with sixteen
- 13:25Speaker 1: false start penalties and they got two more. They were
- 13:28Speaker 1: number one in the NFL most penalized with false starts
- 13:30Speaker 1: thirty second they're remaining there, which is not a good
- 13:33Speaker 1: place to be. So you know that that will that
- 13:36Speaker 1: will hurt you. But I don't think I don't think
- 13:40Speaker 1: Billy's play necessarily has should unseat Trey Hopkins because he
- 13:45Speaker 1: got a concussion, but he's playing well. Before we get
- 13:50Speaker 1: to our first half of the season awards, complete with
- 13:53Speaker 1: authentic awards show music. Here's a quick reminder that the
- 13:57Speaker 1: Bengals Booth podcast is presented by Light Seltzer. It's light
- 14:01Speaker 1: and refreshing with a hint of fruit flavor. Burrow, We'll
- 14:06Speaker 1: look to throw. He's gonna throw it up the sideline,
- 14:08Speaker 1: back shoulder, throw on and take comes down with the
- 14:12Speaker 1: ball on the titan sideline. It's a catch and that
- 14:16Speaker 1: should be coffin nailam bam. We've hit the halfway point
- 14:22Speaker 1: of the season, and you know what that means. It's
- 14:25Speaker 1: time to hand out some first half awards. Not the Grammys.
- 14:29Speaker 1: We call these the Shrammys in honor of Bengals media
- 14:34Speaker 1: relations assistant Pete shram who goes above and beyond to
- 14:38Speaker 1: help us out. So he's great our first half Shrammy's
- 14:43Speaker 1: let's start with the MVP. Who's your MVP in the
- 14:45Speaker 1: first half? Lap Well, I have to go with Joe Burrow.
- 14:49Speaker 1: You know, Joe Burrow is living up to and beyond.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I think what people expected Dan he made more than
- 14:57Speaker 1: a handful of like jaw dropping throws and plays. I
- 15:02Speaker 1: mean the touch he puts on, the feathery touch that
- 15:06Speaker 1: he puts on these passes, with the arc that just
- 15:09Speaker 1: drops down out of the sky to these tight little
- 15:12Speaker 1: spots these windows are incredible. And he's got so much
- 15:16Speaker 1: confidence in a short period of time. I mean without
- 15:19Speaker 1: OTAs and mini camp and training camp, and you know
- 15:24Speaker 1: they did have some training camp, but no preseason games.
- 15:27Speaker 1: He's gotten to a level of trust and confidence with
- 15:30Speaker 1: his receivers that is remarkable. I mean, everybody said he's
- 15:35Speaker 1: mature beyond his years. He's playing beyond his years. There
- 15:40Speaker 1: are veteran quarterbacks in the National Football League that are
- 15:43Speaker 1: watching Joe Burrow and play and saying, my god, does
- 15:47Speaker 1: he have poise and confidence. How about the music? I
- 15:49Speaker 1: love it, jim Jimmy Sandy getting it done. He's producing
- 15:53Speaker 1: for us today. That is the theme music for the
- 15:55Speaker 1: Shrammy's My MVP is obviously Joe Burrow as well. He's
- 15:59Speaker 1: gotta be on a pace to pass for more than
- 16:01Speaker 1: forty five hundred yards as a rookie, which would be
- 16:03Speaker 1: a Bengals record and a rookie record. But here's the
- 16:05Speaker 1: one other thing I'm going to add that has wowed
- 16:08Speaker 1: me about Joe Burrow. And we knew this about him,
- 16:10Speaker 1: but when you see it face to face, it really
- 16:13Speaker 1: does resonate. The toughness. Yeah, twenty eight sacks, sixty six
- 16:17Speaker 1: quarterback hits, keep getting up with a smile on his face,
- 16:20Speaker 1: firing a strike on the next play. So, for all
- 16:23Speaker 1: of the reasons you described and a few from me,
- 16:26Speaker 1: a well deserving first half MVP, my next guy would
- 16:29Speaker 1: be his number one, Tyler Boyd. Thirty six first down
- 16:33Speaker 1: reception is tied from most in the NFL. Thirty seven
- 16:35Speaker 1: first downs overall, thirty six are receiving, and he's moving
- 16:39Speaker 1: the chains, and he is Joe Burrows guy. It's very
- 16:43Speaker 1: obvious that they have something special brewing. So he's your
- 16:46Speaker 1: second most valuable player would be and mine would be
- 16:49Speaker 1: Jesse Bates. I'll take one from defense. Highest graded safety
- 16:52Speaker 1: in the NFL according to Pro Football focused by a
- 16:55Speaker 1: wide margin more than ten points in their system. Couple
- 16:58Speaker 1: of interceptions, eight pass breakups, the passer rating on passes
- 17:02Speaker 1: throne to him in coverage or when he's in coverage
- 17:06Speaker 1: twenty two point one. That's how good he's been as
- 17:09Speaker 1: a past defender. Younger than Joe Burrow. He is my
- 17:13Speaker 1: second most valuable player, My second most valuable just edged
- 17:17Speaker 1: out Carlos Dunlap, just by Scotia. All right, biggest surprise
- 17:22Speaker 1: of the first half, Dave Lap, I'm fire away. The
- 17:24Speaker 1: biggest surprise of the first half is what occurred in
- 17:27Speaker 1: last week's game, the offensive line playing to the level
- 17:30Speaker 1: they did, Dan, I cannot tell you how hard it
- 17:35Speaker 1: is for them to accomplish what they accomplished. I mean,
- 17:38Speaker 1: it's it's mind boggling, honestly. You know, as a former linement,
- 17:42Speaker 1: I look at it, and I look at the table
- 17:43Speaker 1: room like this is historic. I mean, you have eighty
- 17:47Speaker 1: percent of the guys not you know, have not even
- 17:50Speaker 1: a handful of now Spain had starts, six years experience,
- 17:54Speaker 1: but not next to these guys. And I'm telling you
- 17:56Speaker 1: it's not as easy as people think. It's not like
- 17:58Speaker 1: rolling out of bed and line up next to a guy.
- 18:01Speaker 1: And you show up on Friday and you have a
- 18:04Speaker 1: walkthrough in the head coach's office with the line coach
- 18:07Speaker 1: and the assistant line coach and some of the offensive
- 18:09Speaker 1: line members, and they're giving you a crash course on
- 18:11Speaker 1: terminology and language. And you know, then they've realized anah.
- 18:14Speaker 1: This guy does understand football. He sees the big picture,
- 18:17Speaker 1: he understands the concepts here. I think we're gonna be okay.
- 18:21Speaker 1: And then you know, the next day or the day
- 18:24Speaker 1: after that walk through. The very next day, you're you're
- 18:26Speaker 1: on the football field and Shaq Calhoun, god love him,
- 18:30Speaker 1: jumps offside, whiffs on Clowney, and I think Jim Turner says,
- 18:35Speaker 1: like Paul Brown used to say, the game's a little
- 18:37Speaker 1: too big for you. Right now, I'm going to the
- 18:39Speaker 1: bullpen bringing the right hand or actually Spain's left handed,
- 18:42Speaker 1: using that left handed stands bringing the lefty. And I
- 18:46Speaker 1: feel good about him and the way he played. Come on,
- 18:49Speaker 1: I mean I do remember I mentioned this before. Mike
- 18:52Speaker 1: Wilson got traded to Seattle on a Wednesday, and he
- 18:55Speaker 1: played on a Sunday. The advantage he had Blair Bush
- 18:57Speaker 1: was the center. Blair Bush knew the exact vaccine calls
- 19:00Speaker 1: that Mike Wilson knew with the Bengals. So he would
- 19:02Speaker 1: say to Mike Wilson, what we're doing here is exactly
- 19:05Speaker 1: this is what it was in Cincinnati. So he had
- 19:07Speaker 1: a translator that was like a un translator. I mean,
- 19:10Speaker 1: it was much easier Spain didn't have that luxury, you know,
- 19:14Speaker 1: and man to do what he did and everybody else
- 19:17Speaker 1: that stepped up and played in that game. To me,
- 19:20Speaker 1: by far, that was the biggest surprise of the first
- 19:23Speaker 1: half of the season. My biggest surprise is also an
- 19:26Speaker 1: offensive lineman. And I'm going to caution people who might
- 19:30Speaker 1: be listening in their cars they're driving home, have both
- 19:32Speaker 1: hands on the wheel when I say this. Bobby Hart.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Coaches always say he's better than you think. He's better
- 19:40Speaker 1: than Pro Football Focus says, well, guess what Pro Football
- 19:43Speaker 1: Focus finally agrees. I'm not here to make the case
- 19:47Speaker 1: that Bobby Hart is great. We know he's not. But
- 19:49Speaker 1: Pro Football Focus has him ranked as the thirty eighth
- 19:53Speaker 1: best tackle in the NFL so far this year, ahead
- 19:56Speaker 1: of Jake Matthews, Anthony Costanzo, Carlton Miller, Taylor Lawan, and others.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Jonah Williams is twenty seventh best, so a little bit
- 20:08Speaker 1: better than Bobby easily best among the first year tackles.
- 20:11Speaker 1: But the point I'm making is he's actually been okay.
- 20:15Speaker 1: I think he's having the best year he's had as
- 20:16Speaker 1: a Bengal there's no doubt about that. And I think
- 20:19Speaker 1: what he did in the offseason to prepare himself for
- 20:21Speaker 1: the season, um and the commitment that he made, I
- 20:25Speaker 1: think are paying off. It was it was sad to
- 20:27Speaker 1: see him get hurt because he's I know, I know
- 20:31Speaker 1: the line coaches believe in him. They are in his
- 20:36Speaker 1: corner without question. I mean one's one's rubbing him down,
- 20:41Speaker 1: the others taking care of cuts as the cutman in
- 20:43Speaker 1: the corner man, they're they're working on him and getting
- 20:45Speaker 1: him ready to go. So there's no question in my
- 20:49Speaker 1: mind that I think as guys come back from injury
- 20:53Speaker 1: Jonah Williams with the sting or Bobby Hart with the knee,
- 20:55Speaker 1: you know they're gonna They're not gonna lose their jobs
- 20:58Speaker 1: because of injury. And five offensive lineman playing a really
- 21:03Speaker 1: good football game. Again, I'm not trying to be smirched
- 21:06Speaker 1: or belittle the Tennessee Titans. They ain't no Pittsburgh Steelers,
- 21:10Speaker 1: there ain't no Baltimore Ravens and these other guys have
- 21:13Speaker 1: experienced it, gone through it, and there's something to be
- 21:15Speaker 1: said for that, because I'm telling you, when you get
- 21:18Speaker 1: into that situation, you think, you think you might be ready,
- 21:21Speaker 1: but then it's rush hour and it's there's so many
- 21:25Speaker 1: people and doing so many things, and what were the rules?
- 21:28Speaker 1: And that's the other thing that I want to, you know,
- 21:31Speaker 1: give some credit to Jim Turner and the rules simple,
- 21:37Speaker 1: a few rules applying to so many different things. That
- 21:40Speaker 1: is one of the biggest reasons they were able to
- 21:42Speaker 1: accomplish what they accomplished because Jim Turner makes this system
- 21:46Speaker 1: kiss keep it simple, stupid, don't overcomplicate it. And guys
- 21:51Speaker 1: were able to adapt and adjust very very quickly. And
- 21:54Speaker 1: I think it's a tribute to the teacher who gave
- 21:57Speaker 1: you the tools and taught you how to properly implement them.
- 22:01Speaker 1: The Shrammy's continue with your biggest disappointment of the first half.
- 22:06Speaker 1: My biggest disappointment would be everybody they spent money on
- 22:09Speaker 1: a free agency is on IR. You know, I mean
- 22:11Speaker 1: Trey Wayne's we haven'tn't seen him yet, you know, DJ Reader,
- 22:16Speaker 1: Mike Daniel's on IR. Everybody they paid money to get
- 22:20Speaker 1: in free agency has been hurt. And then throwing Gino Atkins,
- 22:25Speaker 1: you know, with the shoulder injury. The defensive line I
- 22:27Speaker 1: thought was going to be a strength of the football game,
- 22:30Speaker 1: football team, and you know, the thing unravels with Carlos.
- 22:33Speaker 1: He's now a Seattle Seahawk. God bless him, good luck
- 22:36Speaker 1: to him. Hopefully both parties benefit. But you know, Gino
- 22:40Speaker 1: playing like a one armed paperhanger, and that's that's hard
- 22:43Speaker 1: to hang that wallpaper with one arm. It's and it's
- 22:46Speaker 1: difficult to play defense, attackle with one arm. I can
- 22:48Speaker 1: tell you that. And then the injuries. That's my biggest
- 22:51Speaker 1: disappointment is the defense has never looked the way I
- 22:56Speaker 1: thought it was going to look because everybody they paid
- 22:59Speaker 1: big money foreign free and then Xaviers Touaphila as well.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I mean, my biggest disappointment is free agent dough and
- 23:06Speaker 1: it was a bunch of its spent well over one
- 23:08Speaker 1: hundred million bucks. They have not gotten a return on
- 23:11Speaker 1: the investment for themselves, teammates and fans. My biggest disappointment,
- 23:16Speaker 1: and it pains me to say it, is Aj Green,
- 23:20Speaker 1: largely because I thought he was going to be the
- 23:22Speaker 1: old AJ Green and just take off and looked like
- 23:25Speaker 1: he looked pre all of his injuries, and obviously that
- 23:28Speaker 1: hasn't been the case. Now the good news is it's
- 23:31Speaker 1: not too late. He had the great two game stretch
- 23:33Speaker 1: against Indian Cleveland where he had fifteen catches for nearly
- 23:36Speaker 1: two hundred yards. But in the Baltimore game, we saw
- 23:40Speaker 1: something we thought we would never see him. Loaf on
- 23:43Speaker 1: that interception, sulk on the bench. That's not the aj
- 23:47Speaker 1: Green we know and love. So again, it's not too late,
- 23:49Speaker 1: but to this point, clearly it's been a disappointment. Sure,
- 23:52Speaker 1: no doubt he'd be the first one to agree with
- 23:55Speaker 1: you on that Dam's and he basically chastised himself after
- 23:59Speaker 1: the Baltimore game, saying, that's not me. I can't do that.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I think he realized the error in his ways last
- 24:06Speaker 1: category and the Shammy's the play of the first half
- 24:10Speaker 1: of the season. What do you have the play of
- 24:13Speaker 1: the first half of the season. My gosh, I mean,
- 24:15Speaker 1: there's there's a lot of Joe Burrow plays, you know,
- 24:19Speaker 1: Um is it? Is it? The fran tarkeet didn't like Houdini,
- 24:23Speaker 1: make you miss a bunch of scrambles, you know, uh,
- 24:26Speaker 1: you know, making guys miss and uh serpentining around like
- 24:29Speaker 1: fran tarkeeting and throwing the football. You know, I think
- 24:32Speaker 1: that that might be one, but so many times Dan
- 24:35Speaker 1: so many times. I think of the Sethon Carter throw.
- 24:39Speaker 1: I mean, that couldn't have been in any better spot.
- 24:42Speaker 1: The Tyler Boyd throw that couldn't have been in any
- 24:45Speaker 1: better spot for him to and on the other end,
- 24:48Speaker 1: for him to not even see the football and then react.
- 24:51Speaker 1: The ie hand coordination of Tyler Boyd and the and
- 24:55Speaker 1: the reflexes of Tyler Boyd just unbelievable. And Joe Burrow
- 24:58Speaker 1: trusted him to do that. I just think so many plays,
- 25:02Speaker 1: so many throws of his he has put in spots
- 25:05Speaker 1: where it's like, are you kidding me? Are you serious?
- 25:08Speaker 1: Sideline throws to t Higgins. I just think that Joe
- 25:11Speaker 1: Burrow has had many moments of wow, I mean pin
- 25:17Speaker 1: point spots. I would add the third down pass to
- 25:22Speaker 1: Autumn Tate that we heard earlier in the show, the
- 25:25Speaker 1: Coffin Nails play from last week. But if I had
- 25:27Speaker 1: to play pick a play from the first half, I
- 25:30Speaker 1: would pick one of the ones you were talking about.
- 25:32Speaker 1: That Tyler Boyd catch last week, fourth quarter, Bengals up ten,
- 25:36Speaker 1: nine minutes to go third down to nine. Burrows somehow
- 25:39Speaker 1: maneuvers in the pocket and throws to Boyd when he's
- 25:42Speaker 1: basically tied up by a defender and not looking, he
- 25:45Speaker 1: turns and the ball is there on top of his
- 25:48Speaker 1: left shoulder. Great throw, incredible anticipatient, unbelievable catch, one of
- 25:55Speaker 1: the most remarkable quarterback to wide receiver combos I've ever seen.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And for Joe to pull the trigger on it, the
- 26:01Speaker 1: faith and trust and Tyler Boyd because he was there
- 26:05Speaker 1: should have been a flag. I mean, Tyler board after
- 26:07Speaker 1: the catch, he went right to the official and it's like,
- 26:10Speaker 1: are you kidding me? You'd call nothing on that? And
- 26:12Speaker 1: then the safety was, you know, coming closing from the backside.
- 26:15Speaker 1: If Tyler Boyd does not react to that football, Joe
- 26:18Speaker 1: Burrow is risking a red zone interception. That's trust, that's confidence,
- 26:22Speaker 1: and uh yeah, I mean, I just can't wait to
- 26:25Speaker 1: see the wide receiver corps, including aj Green as a
- 26:29Speaker 1: whole the Arrow go up in their efforts with Joe
- 26:32Speaker 1: Burrow in the second half of the season. Jimmy is
- 26:35Speaker 1: the theme music from The Shrammy still available to wrap
- 26:38Speaker 1: up this segment. I love it that concludes the Shrammy's Yeah,
- 26:49Speaker 1: We're going to take an in depth look at the
- 26:51Speaker 1: first half of Joe Burrow's first season with two former
- 26:55Speaker 1: NFL quarterbacks up. First from the NFL Today on CBS
- 27:00Speaker 1: and Inside the NFL on Showtime, it's former Super Bowl
- 27:04Speaker 1: MVP Phil Simms. Well, Phil, you know where we want
- 27:07Speaker 1: to start, and that is with Joe Burrow. What do
- 27:10Speaker 1: you think through eight games? Wow? What do I think?
- 27:14Speaker 1: I can honestly say I've watched every Joe Burrow throw
- 27:17Speaker 1: this year, so I don't have to lie. And I
- 27:21Speaker 1: like to be of course coming out, you know, for
- 27:23Speaker 1: many reasons. One just his movement, his size, played in
- 27:28Speaker 1: a pro offense, just abused to so many great things.
- 27:32Speaker 1: But all those things I talk about, and I just
- 27:35Speaker 1: said this to my son today. He's better at all
- 27:38Speaker 1: those things now than he was at LSU. And it
- 27:42Speaker 1: just each week I see something, I go, oh my god,
- 27:46Speaker 1: the anticipation, you know, he's he's starting, a guy going
- 27:49Speaker 1: over the middle, coming over the middle of the field,
- 27:52Speaker 1: and where's he? Oh, there he comes, and he it's
- 27:55Speaker 1: just of course he learned that, you know, being a
- 27:58Speaker 1: point guarding basketball playing like he did an LSU with
- 28:01Speaker 1: Joe Brady, and he just he puts it all together
- 28:03Speaker 1: and it's been a it's been a surprise with that.
- 28:07Speaker 1: But I gotta honestly say, his physical ability. I think
- 28:11Speaker 1: his arm, it looks even better in the NFL than
- 28:14Speaker 1: I expected it. And you know, the great word for
- 28:17Speaker 1: him in the pocket and all that. He is just slippery,
- 28:20Speaker 1: A big guy that just has it. Man, he can.
- 28:22Speaker 1: He feels the pocket great. I need to tell him
- 28:25Speaker 1: to compare and teachs Daniel Jones. That would help the
- 28:28Speaker 1: Giants out a lot. But it's really it's just it's
- 28:30Speaker 1: been tremendous. There's nothing else to say. You know, you
- 28:33Speaker 1: are a great that Super Bowl where your MVP, to
- 28:37Speaker 1: have your best game in the biggest game of your life.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I just can't imagine what that must have felt like.
- 28:42Speaker 1: But Mike Pope, who coached with the Giants when you
- 28:46Speaker 1: were there, coach with the Bengals and I talked. I
- 28:48Speaker 1: talked to Mike Pope about you as a quarterback, and
- 28:51Speaker 1: I said, if you had to give me the biggest
- 28:55Speaker 1: the best quality that Phil Simms had at the quarterback position,
- 28:59Speaker 1: what would you say? He goes, let me tell you
- 29:01Speaker 1: something happen. Tough, This dude tough might have been the
- 29:06Speaker 1: toughest guy in the football team. Joe Burrow has that
- 29:09Speaker 1: people don't realize Joe Burrow gets knocked around like a pinata.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Oh and just you know, give me more. And that coach,
- 29:16Speaker 1: Mike Pope said, Phil Simms may have been as tough
- 29:18Speaker 1: a man as I've ever met. What do you think
- 29:20Speaker 1: about that man? Well, listen, that's nice compliments on my
- 29:25Speaker 1: great friends. Unbelievable coach through his career all that. If
- 29:30Speaker 1: I didn't play that way, Parcels would have benched me anyway.
- 29:32Speaker 1: So and they he just my coach in the NFL
- 29:36Speaker 1: was the same as it was in high school and college.
- 29:39Speaker 1: I mean I had the same guy all three. In fact,
- 29:41Speaker 1: Bill Parcels was probably the nicest one of the group.
- 29:43Speaker 1: But you know, Joe Burrow, if you go back and
- 29:47Speaker 1: look at his LSU games, which I watched them very closely,
- 29:51Speaker 1: he took beatings down there too. You know, he playing
- 29:55Speaker 1: Auburn Alabama. I mean the pocket was tight, they collapsed
- 29:59Speaker 1: it a lot as right as LSU was. You know,
- 30:01Speaker 1: in the SEC you play quarterback. Maybe Alabama is the
- 30:04Speaker 1: only exception I can think of. You're gonna get hit
- 30:07Speaker 1: by NFL lineman and uh yeah, hit his look his
- 30:12Speaker 1: calm demeanor and all that stuff. That is a great
- 30:15Speaker 1: point to how tough he is that when they played
- 30:19Speaker 1: in Baltimore this year, now, that was across that went
- 30:23Speaker 1: over the line. For me, I was like really mad
- 30:25Speaker 1: when the game was over, and Boomer goes, why are
- 30:28Speaker 1: you so mad? I go, well, it's too much hitting
- 30:30Speaker 1: at the end of the game when the game is over,
- 30:33Speaker 1: and I was just really, you know, and Boom goes,
- 30:36Speaker 1: I know, Boomer, he's your man crush on one of them.
- 30:39Speaker 1: But when the game was over, I was starting to
- 30:42Speaker 1: worry about Joe Burrow taking too many hits because all
- 30:46Speaker 1: you're gonna do is being unlucky one time. But but
- 30:50Speaker 1: he's he's weathered the storm. The amount of dropbacks, the
- 30:54Speaker 1: amount of throws is just gonna it's just speeding his
- 30:58Speaker 1: career up. And you know how many times can you
- 31:01Speaker 1: rush the quarterback as the defensive lineman, guys. I mean
- 31:03Speaker 1: that's the other thing and the right the one thing
- 31:06Speaker 1: wide receiving group. Oh my gosh, it's it's tremendous. But
- 31:10Speaker 1: they're good. They're getting even better because of all the
- 31:13Speaker 1: repetitions in the game that they have, which is what's
- 31:17Speaker 1: has been fun to see. And the C. T. Higgins
- 31:19Speaker 1: you just come along here lately, is just adding to
- 31:21Speaker 1: the group. Talking to Phil Sims from CBS. What is
- 31:25Speaker 1: Boomer like when you guys are hanging out on the
- 31:27Speaker 1: set watching games between your segments and he's watching Burrow? Well, listen,
- 31:33Speaker 1: he played enough down there in Cincinnati, So you know,
- 31:35Speaker 1: he's arrogant, thinks he's the best looking person in the world.
- 31:42Speaker 1: What else can I say about Boomer. I'm a little
- 31:44Speaker 1: disappointed he actually lost wait and trimmed up this year.
- 31:47Speaker 1: That was disappointing. But you know, no, he's great and
- 31:51Speaker 1: he focuses. Of course, he does a radio show up here,
- 31:54Speaker 1: so he's always on the Giants and Jets, yelling and
- 31:57Speaker 1: you know, screaming about that. And of course is right there,
- 32:00Speaker 1: right there with it. She told about Joe Burrows. Did
- 32:03Speaker 1: you see hi feel? Yeah, Boomer, I got I'm watching it. Yeah,
- 32:06Speaker 1: I got it. You know. But whatever, So he's he's
- 32:08Speaker 1: really into it. He loves the fact that the Bengals
- 32:11Speaker 1: are back on the map. You know, I do too,
- 32:14Speaker 1: isn't It's something The Browns and the Bengals are extremely relevant. Again,
- 32:19Speaker 1: and I don't know, you wouldn't think this, but it
- 32:21Speaker 1: just seems to be a great thing. For the league.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I agree. I agree with you. Um quarterback play problem solving?
- 32:30Speaker 1: How big of a factor in Joe Burrow? In my
- 32:32Speaker 1: mind is a great problem solving. I mean, when he
- 32:35Speaker 1: looks over the field, he sees where are the problems
- 32:39Speaker 1: may exist and avoid you know, he solves problems. How
- 32:42Speaker 1: big of a factor is that for a young quarterback?
- 32:46Speaker 1: You know, Dave it's it's and Dan it's it's. It's
- 32:48Speaker 1: almost really unfathomable too. I don't say words that I
- 32:53Speaker 1: can't pronounce. It's all to believe that what he does,
- 32:58Speaker 1: in other words, it's above where I was probably ever
- 33:03Speaker 1: in my career and my first couple of years. I mean,
- 33:07Speaker 1: come on, it was just dropped back, And why'd you
- 33:10Speaker 1: throw that ball there? Well? I thought I could get
- 33:12Speaker 1: it in there. Well, okay, all right, you know, I
- 33:15Speaker 1: mean he got intercepted. But it's just his whole thing
- 33:18Speaker 1: about having that great feel seeing the defense and really
- 33:22Speaker 1: understanding the defense. Of course, now and late my career,
- 33:27Speaker 1: you couldn't fool me when you lined up on defense
- 33:31Speaker 1: and when the slot guy's gonna blitz year nine yards
- 33:34Speaker 1: back and said at ten, you idiot, you think I
- 33:37Speaker 1: can see that? No, I'm really being serious. Safety could
- 33:41Speaker 1: line up twelve yards I go. You know, he's usually
- 33:44Speaker 1: at fourteen. So this is telling me, you know, you
- 33:46Speaker 1: knew right away, and he already has that factor in him.
- 33:50Speaker 1: I know he can. I can tell he looks over
- 33:53Speaker 1: the defense quick. He's already got his you know, not
- 33:56Speaker 1: his mind meet up, but he has a feel for
- 33:58Speaker 1: where he's gonna go. And then he can find the
- 34:00Speaker 1: next receiver so fast, which he did in college. And
- 34:04Speaker 1: then when he's going to get hit and he knows
- 34:06Speaker 1: there's trouble in the pocket, he immediately before he falls apart,
- 34:10Speaker 1: can find the outlet guy and just get rid of
- 34:13Speaker 1: the football, which is again the repetitions he had at
- 34:19Speaker 1: LSU that last year. But it's natural to him. Two.
- 34:22Speaker 1: I mean, if you just think what he'd be like
- 34:24Speaker 1: if he had three years of LSU's offense in him
- 34:27Speaker 1: when he came to the NFL, he'd be well. I
- 34:29Speaker 1: don't know if he could be any better, but it
- 34:31Speaker 1: might have been easier for him. Who knows you were
- 34:34Speaker 1: good as a rookie, Phil, I mean a lot of
- 34:36Speaker 1: quarterbacks their rookie year stats are brutal. Peyton Manning still
- 34:40Speaker 1: holds the record for rookie interceptions. John Elway completed forty
- 34:44Speaker 1: seven percent of his passes as a rookie. You giants
- 34:47Speaker 1: for six and five in the games you started as
- 34:49Speaker 1: a rookie. But are you amazed that so many guys
- 34:53Speaker 1: now succeed right away? I mean, Justin Herbert's got a
- 34:55Speaker 1: passer rating one or four point five. Burrow has been great.
- 34:58Speaker 1: You know Kyler Murray terrific last year. Does that stun you, Well, yeah,
- 35:04Speaker 1: I'm a little stun but I understand the dynamics of it.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I mean, listen, what do I do during the off
- 35:10Speaker 1: season with my younger son, Matt. We train quarterbacks and
- 35:14Speaker 1: we have a lot of them. And I have high
- 35:16Speaker 1: school kids that if you watch them work out, then
- 35:18Speaker 1: if I didn't tell, you, go what major is he
- 35:22Speaker 1: going to? Ohio State? Or you just can't believe because
- 35:25Speaker 1: they're brought up differently. I mean, we have guys that
- 35:28Speaker 1: run left and throw to the right sideline. We have
- 35:30Speaker 1: them going you know, we had a kids. You'll see
- 35:34Speaker 1: the video on showtime. I don't know whatever, but we
- 35:37Speaker 1: teach a lot of stuff, especially like moving, throwing, awkward
- 35:41Speaker 1: stuff and all that the kids can run and jump
- 35:45Speaker 1: and I'm not exaggerating. We have some kids that can
- 35:47Speaker 1: throw it jumping straight up in the air, throw it
- 35:50Speaker 1: over sixty yards, yez. But it's a teaching lesson on
- 35:53Speaker 1: how to use your body to throw and all that.
- 35:55Speaker 1: It's why we do it. My son showed it to
- 35:57Speaker 1: me one day. I said, wow, Ma, I don't know
- 35:58Speaker 1: about this. You know, these kids and they started doing it,
- 36:01Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, I was like this, I
- 36:03Speaker 1: gotta film it. And of course I film everything, but
- 36:06Speaker 1: these but these young kids are getting such great teaching
- 36:10Speaker 1: and maybe not up here in the Northeast, and I
- 36:12Speaker 1: don't know how it is down there in the area
- 36:14Speaker 1: you guys live in, but Texas, California. They throw the
- 36:18Speaker 1: ball so much in high school and then they continue
- 36:20Speaker 1: to throw a lot in the college. So they're coming
- 36:23Speaker 1: into the NFL. I mean many they got it. They
- 36:26Speaker 1: feel it and know and the teachings better for the
- 36:30Speaker 1: mechanics a little bit, but just the teaching of the
- 36:33Speaker 1: offense and the rule changes too, of course, are a
- 36:36Speaker 1: huge advantage now these quarterbacks, I mean, it really is
- 36:40Speaker 1: just running the ball out, easy throws, easy reads. You know,
- 36:44Speaker 1: about thirty percent of the time, I think it's really
- 36:47Speaker 1: easy for the quarterback, but it's those other moments when
- 36:50Speaker 1: it gets rough and you've got to be very instinctive
- 36:52Speaker 1: and have talent is what really separates you from the rest.
- 36:56Speaker 1: But these these Joe Burrow, We're gonna have a route
- 37:00Speaker 1: that comes out every year that are really quality, ready
- 37:03Speaker 1: to start franchise quarterbacks. It's just a question where they
- 37:06Speaker 1: get in the right spot. But they get in the
- 37:09Speaker 1: right system and have an organization that's good enough to
- 37:13Speaker 1: let you show everything that you have. And that is
- 37:16Speaker 1: the challenge of course now for the Bengals and the
- 37:18Speaker 1: Chargers that can they get the organization and the team
- 37:22Speaker 1: in a position for these guys to really show their
- 37:25Speaker 1: talent and win games under pressure and all that. Our
- 37:29Speaker 1: second in depth look at Joe Burrow comes from former
- 37:31Speaker 1: Bengals quarterback JT. O'Sullivan, who has a channel on YouTube
- 37:36Speaker 1: called the QB School where he breaks down video of
- 37:39Speaker 1: quarterback play. It's outstanding and this week, for the second
- 37:42Speaker 1: time this season, he put Joe Burrow under his microscope.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Go to YouTube and type in super Burrow and it
- 37:50Speaker 1: will pop right up about twenty five minutes of great insight.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Earlier this year, after the Bengals played the Eagles. Back
- 37:58Speaker 1: in Week three, at posted a video titled Joe Burrow
- 38:02Speaker 1: Becoming NFL Joe Burrow, and that week he spoke to
- 38:07Speaker 1: Lap and me, when you watch him, what jumps out
- 38:09Speaker 1: on tape. Initially, if you go back and watch the
- 38:12Speaker 1: college stuff, specifically last year, I think what jumps out
- 38:15Speaker 1: on tape has probably the best season that any quarterback
- 38:17Speaker 1: has ever played at the college level. And you know,
- 38:20Speaker 1: you go back and kind of peel apart and analyze
- 38:22Speaker 1: why that is. I think that there are things that
- 38:25Speaker 1: you're already seeing in Cincinnati as far as his pocket savvy,
- 38:29Speaker 1: his ability to be technical and smooth within the pocket,
- 38:32Speaker 1: two hands on the ball, shufflin, staying alive, those types
- 38:35Speaker 1: of things. He's a better athlete, and you probably think
- 38:37Speaker 1: initially watching him, and then he's just so ridiculously accurate
- 38:41Speaker 1: last year in their in their scheme, and now they
- 38:43Speaker 1: had some dudes out there as well, but he was
- 38:45Speaker 1: the one orchestrating it. And you know, those are the
- 38:48Speaker 1: things that jump off for me, the accuracy, the pocket presence,
- 38:51Speaker 1: all those things. And so even now you just look
- 38:54Speaker 1: to see if how that translates into the league it's
- 38:56Speaker 1: obviously going to translate really well, but it's you know,
- 38:58Speaker 1: it's not quite the same as being around a loaded
- 39:01Speaker 1: LSU at the Division one level, and so it's about
- 39:04Speaker 1: bridging based capacity to play the position at a really
- 39:06Speaker 1: high level with what Sundays called for you to do
- 39:09Speaker 1: with that position, you know, the thing that was impressive
- 39:12Speaker 1: to me in college watching him now it's translated so
- 39:16Speaker 1: far as like you'd say, with the pocket presence and
- 39:18Speaker 1: his ability athletically. He's got some quick twitch to him
- 39:22Speaker 1: and he was an all state point guard in high
- 39:24Speaker 1: school and he was really he had basketball opportunities to
- 39:27Speaker 1: play at the next level. So he's got some athletic ability,
- 39:31Speaker 1: and he's making these guys in the sec you know,
- 39:34Speaker 1: quick feet making a miss slide step and stepping up
- 39:36Speaker 1: in the pocket and stepping up to vacate instead of
- 39:39Speaker 1: just vacating, stepping up and then vacating, and you know
- 39:41Speaker 1: he did that in the game. It's always everything in
- 39:44Speaker 1: athletics starts with your feet and ends with your hands, right,
- 39:46Speaker 1: everything with Joe Burrow starts with his feet and ends
- 39:48Speaker 1: with his hands. He's got unbelievable feet in terms of
- 39:51Speaker 1: you know, mechanics extending and creating all that kind of
- 39:55Speaker 1: stuff across athletics. It's always from the ground up. I
- 39:57Speaker 1: think for a long time, you know, most people in
- 39:59Speaker 1: the the quarterback sphere would say playing quarterback is absolutely
- 40:02Speaker 1: from the ground up. I think it's evolved a little
- 40:04Speaker 1: bit more to be center out now kind of torso driven,
- 40:07Speaker 1: core driven, But you're absolutely right. The thing that jumps
- 40:10Speaker 1: out on the film for him is his ability to
- 40:13Speaker 1: be smooth, always ready to throw, technically efficient from within
- 40:17Speaker 1: the pocket, and just so consistent. I mean, that's the
- 40:19Speaker 1: thing about it, you know. I just I can't ever
- 40:21Speaker 1: remember somebody coming at that level, the college level the
- 40:25Speaker 1: season he had last year and looking like such a
- 40:27Speaker 1: polished pro guy within the pocket, and those things aren't
- 40:31Speaker 1: going to go away, And so now it's just about
- 40:34Speaker 1: being able to do it in a longer season against
- 40:36Speaker 1: better competition, when everything's probably a little bit more equal
- 40:39Speaker 1: out there. We're talking to former Bengals quarterback j T. O'Sullivan.
- 40:43Speaker 1: I highly recommend subscribing to the QB School, his YouTube
- 40:46Speaker 1: channel looking at quarterback play in the NFL and also
- 40:50Speaker 1: college football leading up to the draft. Joe Burrow has
- 40:53Speaker 1: been sacked fourteen times in three games he's been hit
- 40:55Speaker 1: about thirty When you watched that game against Philadelphia, how
- 41:00Speaker 1: how bad was that protection in comparison to what other
- 41:03Speaker 1: quarterbacks are facing these days. It's not great. It's not sustainable.
- 41:07Speaker 1: I think it's probably the more important element, you know,
- 41:11Speaker 1: as opposed to looking at the first few weeks. Now
- 41:13Speaker 1: Also you know even you know whether whatever sector you're
- 41:17Speaker 1: analyzing the Bengals performance and Joe Burrows specifically up to
- 41:20Speaker 1: this point, it's hard not to jump to conclusions, even
- 41:23Speaker 1: if it's just a three game sample size, but getting
- 41:25Speaker 1: hit like that, it's probably not sustainable over the course
- 41:28Speaker 1: of a season, let alone a career. And so it's
- 41:30Speaker 1: about building in combination, taking advantage of what Joe does
- 41:34Speaker 1: really well, with what they're doing scheme wise, with how
- 41:38Speaker 1: what their personnela is upfront and so some of the
- 41:40Speaker 1: elements are you know, about knowing how to get the
- 41:43Speaker 1: ball out of your hands quicker. Some of its concept driven,
- 41:46Speaker 1: meaning we need to design place and have the offense
- 41:50Speaker 1: structure to get the ball out quicker. And then it's
- 41:52Speaker 1: about your guys winning on the perimeter as well, and
- 41:54Speaker 1: so and then he'll get faster playing as he gets
- 41:57Speaker 1: more reps like anybody with experience, and so all of
- 42:00Speaker 1: those factors combining into an aggregate to allow him to
- 42:03Speaker 1: play at a high level for a really long time,
- 42:05Speaker 1: because I don't think anybody you know is looking for
- 42:07Speaker 1: a short career from a franchise type of guy like that.
- 42:10Speaker 1: How does the quarterback determine the balancing act of Okay,
- 42:14Speaker 1: I'm athletic. I can extend and create like you. You
- 42:17Speaker 1: did a good job on it the naked bootleg and
- 42:19Speaker 1: he came back on his own. When you come back
- 42:21Speaker 1: on your own, you're on your own, you know. And
- 42:23Speaker 1: he took a shot from the league Jackson. So how
- 42:25Speaker 1: do you balance? All right? I want to try to
- 42:27Speaker 1: make a play, but I don't want to put myself
- 42:30Speaker 1: in the danger it looks like I might be putting
- 42:32Speaker 1: myself into How does that if you're skilled enough, that
- 42:35Speaker 1: athletic enough to do it like he is, how do
- 42:38Speaker 1: you make those decisions? Where's that balancing? Where's the tipping point? Well,
- 42:43Speaker 1: you know the tipping point right there is You're gonna
- 42:44Speaker 1: get smacked right that, and you're gonna learn pretty hard
- 42:47Speaker 1: pretty quick. I think it's a combination of his sports staff,
- 42:50Speaker 1: meaning the coaches, the other quarterbacks, his ability to learn
- 42:53Speaker 1: from watching other people. You know, you watch. I think
- 42:56Speaker 1: the thing about it is the position is getting so
- 42:57Speaker 1: much more athletic across the league. You know, the best
- 43:00Speaker 1: players now or the best athletes are playing quarterback younger,
- 43:03Speaker 1: and so the the position across the board, across all
- 43:07Speaker 1: sectors of football is getting more athletic. And so you
- 43:09Speaker 1: see guys like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson, Aaron
- 43:13Speaker 1: who a certain extent for a long time, getting outside
- 43:15Speaker 1: the pocket, making ridiculous off platform throws, athletic throws, staying alive,
- 43:21Speaker 1: and you think you can do that, and he can
- 43:22Speaker 1: do that, but the guys who are chasing you are
- 43:25Speaker 1: just better, faster, bigger, stronger than you're used to and
- 43:28Speaker 1: so you have to learn that, Hey, if I'm gonna
- 43:30Speaker 1: come back, you know that's not on my offensive line.
- 43:32Speaker 1: If I'm going to reverse fields, so that's not me.
- 43:34Speaker 1: That doesn't mean you can never do it. You can
- 43:36Speaker 1: do it, but you just have to know, like, hey,
- 43:38Speaker 1: maybe I tip don't take quite as sharp as angle downhill.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Maybe I know you see Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, guys
- 43:45Speaker 1: kind of when they go to turn, they'll peek the
- 43:46Speaker 1: other way out the side of their helmet. Now I
- 43:49Speaker 1: can tell you that's not easy to do. And just
- 43:51Speaker 1: because you can peek doesn't mean you can make the turn.
- 43:53Speaker 1: You know, I for a long time I would peak,
- 43:55Speaker 1: but you know, I get smacked because I can't move
- 43:57Speaker 1: as fast as the defensive end. And so it's one
- 43:59Speaker 1: thing to be to know it. It's another be able
- 44:01Speaker 1: to do it, and then it's another to be able
- 44:03Speaker 1: to do it consistently on Sundays. A couple more questions
- 44:06Speaker 1: for JT o' sullivan. You were a Bengal in two
- 44:08Speaker 1: thousand and nine. You spent time with a lot of
- 44:10Speaker 1: NFL teams, whether it was on the roster or in
- 44:13Speaker 1: practice squad or in training camp. Also played in NFL
- 44:16Speaker 1: Europe and the CFL. What stood out JT about that
- 44:20Speaker 1: two thousand and nine season where you backed up Carson Palmer?
- 44:23Speaker 1: That was probably one of the more fun teams that
- 44:26Speaker 1: I was around. And what I mean, I don't mean
- 44:27Speaker 1: winning and going to the playoffs that obviously helps, but
- 44:30Speaker 1: just the group of dudes on that team is the
- 44:33Speaker 1: nicest way I can say. You know, I felt like
- 44:35Speaker 1: there were a lot of guys that were all kind
- 44:37Speaker 1: of around in the same area of their career, all
- 44:40Speaker 1: cared about ball, all, you know, came together to really
- 44:44Speaker 1: make a dent in that division that year and it
- 44:46Speaker 1: was great. You know. It started and stopped with Carson
- 44:48Speaker 1: at the time, and he played at a really high level,
- 44:51Speaker 1: played hurt. I was able to do things with that
- 44:53Speaker 1: offense that I think took advantage of what we had
- 44:56Speaker 1: on the perimeter and what we had up front. And
- 44:57Speaker 1: it was a blast night. I really enjoyed my time
- 45:00Speaker 1: in the real sense, city sense city I like it.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Final question, appreciate you taking the time you have whether
- 45:06Speaker 1: us this has been outstanding. A young guy like Joe
- 45:09Speaker 1: Burrow comes in the league and manipulating defenses with his eyes.
- 45:13Speaker 1: I mean usually that's not something rookie quarterback does. Jesse Bates,
- 45:17Speaker 1: who was very intelligent safety on the Bengals defense, said
- 45:20Speaker 1: during training camp, Man Borrow, he's really good with his eyes. Man.
- 45:24Speaker 1: You know, I've learned, I've learned the kid. The kid
- 45:25Speaker 1: he will he will play with you with those eyes.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Is that unusual? I mean, to be that skilled even
- 45:32Speaker 1: at that with with your eyes at that coming out
- 45:35Speaker 1: of college, I probably think it is. I really do
- 45:38Speaker 1: think that the position across the board is getting better.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Do you see so many younger guys, you know, at
- 45:42Speaker 1: the seven and seven circuits, and they're just getting more
- 45:45Speaker 1: reps at more things that you're used to doing on
- 45:47Speaker 1: Sundays and Sundays have changed too. It's a little bit
- 45:50Speaker 1: more spread out concepts. You know, information, whether it's a
- 45:53Speaker 1: YouTube channel or better coaching across the board. Uh, you know,
- 45:57Speaker 1: your you have better access to better information. And I
- 46:00Speaker 1: remember going to the NFL and there were concepts that
- 46:02Speaker 1: I had never played before, where now Joe Burrow is
- 46:05Speaker 1: probably familiar with a lot of things that he's being
- 46:06Speaker 1: asked to do it now. It doesn't mean that you
- 46:08Speaker 1: can then go out there and do it in an
- 46:09Speaker 1: NFL practice or game like he does. But I think,
- 46:13Speaker 1: I think collectively the position is getting better. But I
- 46:15Speaker 1: still think it's impressive that he's able to do that,
- 46:17Speaker 1: even though you know, I think, you know, manipulating people
- 46:20Speaker 1: with your eyes usually happens in zooe coverage. You have
- 46:23Speaker 1: to be really comfortable with the concepts. You have to
- 46:25Speaker 1: know why you're manipulating someone, and you also have to
- 46:27Speaker 1: have the rhythm and the timing to still deliver the
- 46:30Speaker 1: ball on time. So it's one thing to look someone off,
- 46:32Speaker 1: it's another thing to come back and be on time
- 46:34Speaker 1: where you're trying to go, and so it's not it's
- 46:37Speaker 1: never just the one off thing. For me. With Joe Burrow,
- 46:40Speaker 1: the thing that's so impressive is just the package in
- 46:43Speaker 1: the combination of things that he's able to do within
- 46:45Speaker 1: the pocket. I just never really seen from someone that
- 46:48Speaker 1: young to be that consistently elite at it. Thanks to
- 46:53Speaker 1: Phil Sims and j. T. O'Sullivan And here's a quick
