- 23:21and Amy Taylor. Telling their stories on Memorial Day, May
- 23:29twenty first, twenty twenty five. This is a column by
- 23:32David B. Whitlock's Life Matters The living can read back
- 23:38the dead. Seventy eight year old Barney Sharp of Lebanon,
- 23:41Kentucky is proof. When he was barely twenty one, Sarpe
- 23:45was wading through a rice paddy field in the meek
- 23:47Holme Valley of Vietnam. Having been selected by Uncle Sam's
- 23:51draft Sarp no fortunate son Judas Lee comply, and when
- 23:56the band played hell to the chief, Sarpe stood to
- 23:59attention with marstinkled eyes. He had been in Vietnam barely
- 24:03three weeks when his combat unit, Alpha Company, serving the
- 24:06ninth INFA Tree Division, was on a reconnaissance mission near
- 24:10Singh who the vietcom were waiting for them that day,
- 24:14September twenty sixth, nineteen sixty eight. Moments before, from the
- 24:18safety of the helicopter, Sarp had been admiring the picturesqueing
- 24:23below the lush rice patty when suddenly the copter landed
- 24:27with a jolt, and undercover of its machine gun fire,
- 24:30he splashed onto the rice field chopper blades, worrying behind him.
- 24:35His company had suffered multiple casualties. When Sergeant Tharp saw
- 24:39that his point man, Richard Rick Jordan's had been hit
- 24:43and was exposed to the enemy quote something I believe
- 24:47it was God, nudgen. I ran to rescue him. Only
- 24:51later with Sarp realized he was the only one who
- 24:53left his position to run to the front, exposing himself
- 24:57to intense enemy fire as he made repeat tripped, dodging
- 25:01bullets to rescue the wounded, five of whom were fatally wounded.
- 25:06Even the medic Kim Stanton, was hit and Sarp, while
- 25:10rescuing Stanted, administered a shot of morphine to Jordan's before
- 25:14dragging them back to safety. The living tell the stories
- 25:18for the deceased. Those five men killed that day had
- 25:21a life waiting for them cut short by war. The
- 25:24nineteen sixty eight nineteen sixty nine time periods were horrible
- 25:28years in many ways. In Vietnam, the average death toll
- 25:31of American soldiers rose to almost sixteen hundred a month
- 25:35in nineteen sixty eight and one thousand a month in
- 25:39nineteen sixty nine. Barney Start believes it is part of
- 25:43his duty to help us remember those soldiers, even though
- 25:48even those who made it back often felt less than alive.

- 26:34In two thousand and three, Sarp wrote on the virtual
