- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:03the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:15together to talk cards. Hey buddy, how's it going?
- 0:22You look better than you sound, Greg.
- 0:24Do I that that doesn't really mean a lot, but thank you.
- 0:31I appreciate that. Yeah, yeah.
- 0:34It's, I was a little bit worried, You know, when you
- 0:36texted me, was it Monday morning saying you're you didn't have a
- 0:40voice? And I was like, oh boy, I got to
- 0:43find a replacement for this week, but now you.
- 0:46Are a trooper. Trooper.
- 0:49Yeah, it was Sunday night I started to lose it Monday
- 0:53completely gone Tuesday, mostly gone Wednesday a little bit
- 0:58better and hey, I'm here. You can hear me.
- 1:03We're good to go I mean, it's not like I'm a teacher.
- 1:07So my voice, See, I, I, I kind of said, it was like I said to
- 1:12my students, I go, it'd be like Louis Armstrong losing his
- 1:17trumpet. What good is he without his
- 1:20trumpet? And your students said who?
- 1:23Actually, if you knew who he was, I was impressed.
- 1:27So yes, I went it. I went down to Disneyland.
- 1:32I hung out with my friend Mickey.
- 1:35We had a blast. My dad went, my brother's family
- 1:39went. It was a lot of fun.
- 1:42It was not cheap, and as you might assume, it rose some
- 1:50questions for me about the hobby.
- 1:53So my topic for you today, my question for you, my friend, is
- 2:01experiences versus stuff. Because I've had many times
- 2:08people say I, I'm not going to use my card money on the
- 2:11National, I'll just buy cards. How many cards could I buy with
- 2:15the money it would cost me to go to the National or Strongsville?
- 2:20And I did I, you know, like a week or two ago decided I'm
- 2:23going to go down to the West Coast Card show down in Ontario,
- 2:26formerly the Burbank Card show, and I'm using like $800.00 of
- 2:33card funds to do it. And that's a lot for you and me.
- 2:37Oh yeah, that's that's a crap done for me.
- 2:41Yeah. So my question is, what are your
- 2:44thoughts on that? Yeah.
- 2:46And then I would love to talk about what I was watching your
- 2:50video today that came out at 5:00 PM my time.
- 2:53I was watching it while I ate my dinner before we started
- 2:55recording. I was the only one here and I
- 2:59think, I think you broke some news very, very quietly, very
- 3:03subtly in this video that I feel like I was pretty, pretty darn
- 3:09big news. I was kind.
- 3:11Of you were just kind of like. Hey, I was kind of nonchalant
- 3:16about it, but I agree. I could have put the the see,
- 3:19I'm I'm not good at thumbnails. I don't and I'm not good at
- 3:23titles, but I, I could have probably changed the thumbnail
- 3:29and the title to make that get a lot of attention.
- 3:34So why don't you, by the time you know this, this airs, that
- 3:39video will have aired for a couple of days.
- 3:42So why don't you tell me? I I think I know what you're
- 3:46referring to, but just in case, tell me what specifically you're
- 3:50referring to. OK.
- 3:52So we're going to start right off on this, which is I think
- 3:54great. You reached out to I.
- 3:58I couldn't remember it was Nat Turner or Ryan Hogue.
- 4:01Reinhogue. Privately through Instagram
- 4:04message and it's by the way it's hilarious that you don't know
- 4:09about Harding a message or or doing a thumbs up can.
- 4:13You do that, can you thumbs up a message?
- 4:16Yeah, of course. I don't know.
- 4:18So you reached out to him privately after his PSA podcast
- 4:22last week? Or was that two weeks ago now
- 4:25anyway? No, it was like 8 days ago as we
- 4:28record this. So it was it was approximately
- 4:32January 14th or 15th. OK.
- 4:36So you asked him, hey, will there be a universal registry
- 4:41for PSA and SGC? And he very unequivocally said
- 4:47no. Yeah.
- 4:49And that to me, I was like, whoa, did, did we know this?
- 4:52Did I miss this somehow, somewhere?
- 4:54Has Greg shared this somewhere else, 'cause I, this is
- 4:56literally the first video I've watched all week.
- 5:00That's first time I've sat down to watch YouTube all week.
- 5:04And I watched that. And I was like, I think I missed
- 5:07this. Greg just glossed over what I
- 5:09think is pretty big news out of the Collector's Holdings
- 5:14universe. So what are your thoughts about
- 5:17that? Well, first of all, I so I
- 5:19screenshotted the actual message to and from and I knew that that
- 5:25was a big deal and I should have probably said on the thumbnail
- 5:29like it should have said like, you know.
- 5:34Bombshell from PSA, Yeah. And then and then PSA shuts
- 5:40down. Idea of universal set, you know,
- 5:44I mean, that's like a that's like Neo would be talking about
- 5:47that tomorrow. But that's just not that's just
- 5:50not kind of what I do. It's not, it's not my lane.
- 5:54You hate views. Big deal, dude, it's this deal.
- 5:58He so, so we all know that there's APSA premium and the PSA
- 6:04premium is largely a result of the registry because people want
- 6:10to have the top registry. They want to have the top Mickey
- 6:12Mantle run the top. You know, it's the competition.
- 6:15It's the place you get to compete.
- 6:18And so there is APSA premium without question.
- 6:23And in some areas more than others, like Commons, It's it's,
- 6:27it's, it's exceptional. You know, it's exceptional with
- 6:30Commons, high grade Commons. And so I'm like, he, he talked
- 6:36about the set at the end of the episode.
- 6:40He talked about the set registry being overhauled, the back end
- 6:46rebuilt and brought into the 21st century lightning fast, all
- 6:52this stuff. And I'm like, well, I mean, this
- 6:54is the perfect opportunity to include the two new labels that
- 6:59you own, right? Right.
- 7:01So I just asked him and he responded in like 5 or 10
- 7:05minutes. It was quick.
- 7:07And he says, no, we have no plans on doing that.
- 7:09It's just going to be PSA. And that is such a big
- 7:14statement. It's huge.
- 7:16It's huge because it shows where their priorities are.
- 7:23And not that any of us are surprised, but we were all
- 7:27hoping because like earlier in the episode, he says things
- 7:30like, well, you know, SGC, we're going to start setting up where
- 7:35you can sell direct after grading.
- 7:37And Beckett, you could grade and then sell through our
- 7:40partnership on eBay. And they're, they're including
- 7:44SGC and Beckett into some of these things that only PSA has
- 7:49been doing, but not the SAT registry.
- 7:53Big deal. What do I think about it?
- 7:56I'm not surprised. I mean, I think I, I, I don't,
- 7:59sometimes I don't remember what I say because I don't, I don't
- 8:01really do notes much. I, I just talk and then I, I
- 8:04later think back and I go, did I say that or think that?
- 8:08But what I think that I said, and you correct me if I'm wrong,
- 8:12is when you walk on the plane past first class and they've got
- 8:16like real glass, you know, cups or no, not cups, glasses.
- 8:24And they've got like silverware when they're already eating and
- 8:27they got the warm wash clothes to clean themselves up and
- 8:30stuff. And the rest of us are getting,
- 8:32you know, we're in the cattle lines all the way to the back.
- 8:36You know, like in Titanic when you're down in the bottom floor
- 8:39and it was flooding out and the people up top were still
- 8:42listening to the guy with the violin.
- 8:44And, and it's like they have to do some things to protect the
- 8:53premium brand and they are making a bold, that was a bold
- 8:58statement that that's the premium brand and the the
- 9:03secondary auxiliary groups aren't going to be a part of it.
- 9:07So I think it's a big deal. That's what I think of it.
- 9:11I'm frankly, I'm impressed and surprised that he responded to
- 9:14you at all at all, let alone so fast, because he interestingly,
- 9:21he reached out to me privately after my video last week.
- 9:24I've never talked to Ryan. He has ignored every single time
- 9:28I've ever tweeted at him or sent him a private message.
- 9:32And this time he reached out to me after my video, which
- 9:38surprised me. It wasn't anything
- 9:40groundbreaking. He had, he had watched the video
- 9:42and but you know, I responded back to him and he, he was done
- 9:48with me. That was it.
- 9:51But then you asked him a question.
- 9:52He very easily could have ignored you and it would have
- 9:55been expected. But he responded, which I think
- 10:00it was like you said, it was a statement, it was important and
- 10:06you should promote that. I I will.
- 10:09I'll do a. Video.
- 10:10I'll talk. About it, there's a reason I
- 10:12don't have a crazy number of views and most of my videos get
- 10:16between 1200 and 1700 views is 'cause I don't do the things I
- 10:22need to do. But let me also say this, when I
- 10:27first met my wife, OK, I hadn't even spoken to her yet.
- 10:33I I remember the moment I saw her walking down the hallway, I
- 10:37was in a classroom in a training.
- 10:38I saw her walk by and I'm like, whoa.
- 10:41That's my future. Her and I, her and I are gonna
- 10:46be spending some time together, OK?
- 10:49And so I started, you know, I just happened to sit near and
- 10:54say nice things to her and be really kind of, she doesn't even
- 10:57remember this 'cause this wasn't even a thing, but I was kind of
- 11:00laying the groundwork a little bit, right?
- 11:03So I knew that there would be a time I'd want to reach out to
- 11:07Ryan Hoag. And so I tried to start a little
- 11:12bit of a rapport, you know? I love that you're associating
- 11:16Ryan Hoag with your wife. Here.
- 11:17Oh yeah, no, this is just the way that I work.
- 11:19You know, you got to kind of, you got to bait the hook a
- 11:23little bit, right? And so I was looking through his
- 11:27Instagram and I have a few times I've seen his post and things
- 11:30and he's got a fair amount of golf carts that he has posted
- 11:35about. And so to just to kind of start
- 11:38the dialogue, I, I sent him a private message about the just
- 11:45my admiration for the fact that he collected golf carts, which I
- 11:49do too. And he responded back.
- 11:52And so then I figured someday when I reach out again, he'll
- 11:56go, oh, I've dialogue with this guy before and then I'll just
- 12:00respond. It's not like some guy trying to
- 12:02get some inside information. And so this was the moment and
- 12:07and I felt a little tug and I went, but I didn't promote it,
- 12:13but that's OK. So yeah, so I I'll, and I want
- 12:17to say this too, because I think Ryan Hogue is probably, I'm
- 12:22going to catch heat for this. I think he's probably a pretty
- 12:25good guy, like everyone that I know that knows him and and I
- 12:29don't want to get, I don't want to cross any lines of
- 12:35confidence. But I have some friends that
- 12:38have talked to him, have gotten information from him and they
- 12:43say he's like a really nice guy. Yeah, no doubt.
- 12:47And I think Nat is, is probably that way too.
- 12:50The problem is that they're they are looking through things,
- 12:56they're doing things that's in the best interest of their
- 12:59company and their bottom line, which us as collectors, we get
- 13:05irritated. It's like, listen, I I think
- 13:10that Tom Brady's probably really good, but he's on the Patriots
- 13:16and he won Super Bowls and he won more Super Bowls than Joe
- 13:19Montana. And people say he's better than
- 13:21Joe Montana. So I can't like him.
- 13:24Listen, I'm a huge Patriots fan and I can't stand Tom Brady.
- 13:30But it's the same thing. Like you love, I'm sure you love
- 13:33Dustin Pedroia. I have to hate him.
- 13:36I have to. You have to hate Paul O'Neill.
- 13:39I mean, you got to hate Paul O'Neill.
- 13:41Yes. And I love Paul O'Neill.
- 13:44Any 1990s Yankees player other than Mariano Rivera is hateable.
- 13:50So my take is I think they're probably decent guys.
- 13:56I think they, I understand why people get upset, but I think I
- 14:02could have a a drink and go to out to a steakhouse and watch a
- 14:05game with those guys and probably have a lot of fun.
- 14:08I do have one in person experience with Nat Turner,
- 14:11which I think is really funny. It was two years ago, I think at
- 14:15the National and I was not a well known YouTube and so I
- 14:19doubt he knew who I was. But I was walking past him, Nat
- 14:23Turner, and I said, oh hey, Nat. And he quickly took his phone
- 14:29and put it up to his ear and pretended to be talking to
- 14:31somebody and then walked away. I was like, wow, good seeing
- 14:36you. I have AI, have AI have a Ryan
- 14:40Hogue story. I feel actually, I feel really
- 14:43badly about this because I I famously play that not famously.
- 14:47I play the clip all the time of him going, well, you know, there
- 14:51are standards in their ranges and you know, one time the card
- 14:54could get at 8:00 and then one time A7 and one time a nine and
- 14:57which is insane. But I play that clip.
- 15:01I've played that clip 10 times on my channel.
- 15:04And so we're walking in the national by the PSA booth and we
- 15:08look over and we see Ryan Hogue there.
- 15:11And there was like, I don't remember who I was with, might
- 15:13have even been you. And I'm I say I go, oh, there it
- 15:17is. I mean, you know, standards and
- 15:19benchmarks are 7 it. And I'm like repeating the line.
- 15:22I'm just being ha, ha, ha, ha. And then I look over my shoulder
- 15:26and he's right behind and I felt like such a jerk cuz I'm just
- 15:32busting his balls, but he doesn't know me.
- 15:35Yeah, right. So what else about that
- 15:38conversation? I mean, let's just completely
- 15:41just go down this road then. So what else about that?
- 15:45Same. I haven't watched your video
- 15:46yet. What was your biggest take away
- 15:49from that podcast? Oh, wow.
- 15:54What was my biggest take away? That they are doing good things
- 16:00or promising good things with SGC and Beckett.
- 16:04And a lot of people are saying, wow, they're doing good things.
- 16:08Well, they're saying they're going to, but that that doesn't
- 16:13mean that they are. And, and just because you say
- 16:18you're going to marry a supermodel or two, in my case,
- 16:23doesn't, doesn't mean you're going to.
- 16:27So that's, that's my take. Yeah. back-to-back or
- 16:31back-to-back or at the same time.
- 16:33Yeah, that when I was when I was a teenager, that's what I said.
- 16:35I was going to marry 2 supermodels.
- 16:38And then it did not happen. By the way, just spoiler alert.
- 16:42When I was when I was at my first teaching job, I was, I had
- 16:47just turned 23 and I had students that were 19 and I had
- 16:52since I were 18 and 17. And so I was like the new young
- 16:56teacher. And so I started, I was the
- 16:59yearbook advisor. So a lot of like the kind of
- 17:01who's who's kids were in my classes and I started a rumor
- 17:06with my students that I was a former Abercrombie model.
- 17:12And, and like a few of them believed me and started
- 17:16spreading it that I was a, that I and, and they would Oh yeah,
- 17:20look it up. And they're like, we don't know
- 17:21you weren't. And I go, I don't care if you
- 17:23believe me, it doesn't matter to me.
- 17:25And like, so it started like circulating that Mister Miller
- 17:29used to be an Abercrombie model, which is a rumor that I
- 17:33completely started. I mean, how brilliant is that?
- 17:36It is brilliant. So you don't think they're going
- 17:41to actually do those things with PSA or with Next GC and Beckett?
- 17:45Boy, you, you got me a little off guard here because the I did
- 17:50believe that they're going to do a lot of them.
- 17:52The one thing that they promised was a lot more capacity speeding
- 17:56up their turn around times. And the point that I made was
- 17:58that they have made this promise for years.
- 18:01They've had slow turn around times at PSA for years and I'm
- 18:06not convinced that they want to or can improve it.
- 18:12Well, let me he he also said that they increase the capacity
- 18:16at PSA by 25%, which is probably when they stole which I said
- 18:22harvested all of the SGC. I love that by the way,
- 18:24harvested their organs. Yeah, I'm quite I'm quite proud
- 18:27of that one. They harvested all of the
- 18:30graders from SGC and their space that had to have increased, you
- 18:37know, 10% maybe just by by stuffing SGC in the broom
- 18:41closet. But do you?
- 18:44OK, let let's look at it this this a little bit differently
- 18:48from a bottom line perspective. If they could process through
- 18:52carts faster, that means they would have more money flowing
- 18:59through the coffers. Not necessarily.
- 19:02Not if demand doesn't increase. So you can increase capacity
- 19:08significantly, but you're only going to lose money if your
- 19:12demand doesn't increase enough to match it.
- 19:15OK, let let's look at it a different way it a golf course,
- 19:19right is always they're always on you about speed of play
- 19:23absolutely get moving like. That's why they they require
- 19:28carts more now than they did 25 years ago.
- 19:30For sure. And, and part of that is the
- 19:33more people they can get through.
- 19:36If they could have P times every 7 minutes instead of every 10,
- 19:40then that UPS by a third. They're, you know.
- 19:43This is a bad this is a bad comparison because it doesn't
- 19:47cost the golf company, the golf course, any money to speed you
- 19:51up unless there's something that they're doing like they're
- 19:54putting people out there yelling at you.
- 19:57But when I used to golf quite frequently in college, they
- 20:00would just tell people as you went out onto the course.
- 20:04Please make sure you're keeping a good pace.
- 20:07Whereas at PSA, it's costing them millions and millions of
- 20:10dollars to increase their capacity to grade, to
- 20:13authenticate, to identify cards. And so there isn't on the golf
- 20:18course unless, unless you have people out there that are
- 20:21telling you to speed things up, unless they're subsidizing your
- 20:24golf carts, which I don't think they are, it's not costing them
- 20:28any money to to speed you up. Isn't it possible though?
- 20:33Which which it isn't it possible that the initial investment
- 20:40amortized over a long period of time will actually be a cost
- 20:45saving? Yes, initially to implement some
- 20:49machinery which automates the sealing process is going to cost
- 20:54money, but it, it, it's like how in California as soon as they up
- 21:00the, I don't know if people outside California know this,
- 21:02but the minimum wage at fast food restaurants in California
- 21:06is $20.00 an hour. And, and so now when you go into
- 21:10McDonald's or you go into wherever there's touch screens
- 21:14and you order yourself, there's not a person that takes your
- 21:16order. When I go to Carl's Junior and,
- 21:18and I go to Taco Bell and I, I talking to the speaker at the
- 21:22drive thru, it's an AI system that is doing the order.
- 21:26It's not a person anymore because it's cheaper to invest
- 21:30into those systems. And then it pays off overtime.
- 21:34Don't you think that overtime this will pay off in in just
- 21:39huge, huge numbers for PSA if. If the investment is in
- 21:43technology and not people, absolutely, but largely the
- 21:48investments for capacity are in people.
- 21:52If somebody was done investing in sports cards and was ready to
- 21:56sell their collection, Mike, where do you think somebody
- 22:00should try to sell their cards? Where would you go?
- 22:03I would go to Chris Sewell, baseball card collector,
- 22:07investor, dealer, in that order. I'm so glad you asked this,
- 22:09Greg, because Chris is a good friend of ours and we, if I were
- 22:13selling my collection, I would go to him in a heartbeat.
- 22:16He would give us anybody a great deal and he'd be extremely
- 22:21transparent about how he comes up with that you if you're
- 22:25selling part or all of your collection, consider Chris
- 22:28Sewell, baseball card collector, investor, dealer.
- 22:31You can e-mail him at sewellsportscards@gmail.com.
- 22:37You can go to our website, sportscardclubhouse.com.
- 22:40Click on. Partner Partners.
- 22:42Partners. Boom, there he is right there.
- 22:45You can reach out to him. Yeah, Chris Sewell is the best
- 22:49and we strongly recommend him. Now I got to say something about
- 22:53Chris because I got AI, got a little bit of AI, got a small
- 22:56bone to pick with Chris right now.
- 22:59Not really. They they started that their
- 23:01podcast, which I've really been enjoying.
- 23:04Yeah, I haven't listened to. Today's yet but.
- 23:07Jeremy Dodson, The Texas Snowman and Chris Sewell are doing
- 23:12Collector Investor Podcast and. The the branding is so good.
- 23:17It's really good. And, and Theo apparently is
- 23:21their executive producer, which is which is when he pops on.
- 23:24It's it's very funny. It's, you know, like it reminds
- 23:28me of when like Baba Booey comes on in Howard Stern, you know,
- 23:32for a minute and then they he goes back out of the studio as
- 23:35quickly as he came on. It's, it's, it's good and and I
- 23:38really do genuinely enjoy it. Me too.
- 23:40And Chris has mentioned something that you've said on
- 23:44our podcast like 3 or 4 times, like MO MM, duck wax, Mike said
- 23:48this and I'm like, and then, and he never mentioned me.
- 23:51And then what he did was he asked a question.
- 23:56I can't remember what it was, but it was a question.
- 23:58Oh, he said their question for their debate topic.
- 24:04No, not the debate topic, but it was just a question that Chris
- 24:07said was what's your favorite slab?
- 24:10And I'm like, that's the question that was on our last
- 24:15poll on Sports Car Clubhouse. So what's going on with that?
- 24:20I don't. Know it's funny, Jeremy called
- 24:23me, I don't know, six weeks ago maybe, and, and told me that
- 24:28they were going to start a podcast and I he said, hey, this
- 24:30is a great opportunity to put it on sports card clubhouse and he
- 24:37he made me pretended to consider it, but then he's like, Nah, I
- 24:41think we're going to start our own channel and he asked me for
- 24:44some technical advice and I was like, you got to get yourself an
- 24:46atom splendid sports atom. He does all that for us.
- 24:50We do none of it. And so I think that Theo is his
- 24:54atom. It it would be fun though, if we
- 24:57were going to have on surface issues because we've not done
- 25:01surface issues guest. You know, if we were going to do
- 25:05like a crossover, kind of like crossing the streams a la the
- 25:10Ghostbusters, you know, it would be kind of fun to have those two
- 25:14guys on and and we could kind of compare notes and what they're
- 25:18why they started theirs, why we started maybe this.
- 25:21Maybe we should talk about doing that.
- 25:23Yeah, I'd love to. Happy to text them and find out
- 25:27if they'd be down. I'm sure they would be.
- 25:30Yeah, Now, OK, so back to my original question at the
- 25:33beginning from like three hours ago.
- 25:36I mean, 25 minutes and 38 seconds ago, but three hours is
- 25:40close. My question is, you know, as I'm
- 25:45in Disneyland and I'm spending all this money, I'm just like
- 25:48corn dog after churro after Dole Whip and I'm and I'm having a
- 25:53blast and we're making great memories.
- 25:55Wait, what's a Dole Whip? Come on, are you serious?
- 25:59Oh boy, we're going to get into another food conversation you
- 26:02had never heard of. Why?
- 26:04I've never heard of You don't know what a Dole Whip is.
- 26:07A Dole Whip is a well, it started as just pineapple, but
- 26:12it's a, a pineapple soft serve, like an ice cream.
- 26:18And it's by the it's, it's in the tiki Hut, which is out in
- 26:23front of the Tiki room. Have you been to Disneyland or
- 26:28just Disney World? I went to Disneyland 13 years
- 26:32ago I think. How many times have you been to
- 26:36a Disneyland or Magic Kingdom Disney World?
- 26:42I don't know, four times? OK.
- 26:48No, probably once as an adult. OK, I'm going to pull this up on
- 26:56the screen for you 'cause you just to really be able to enjoy
- 27:00it. Oh yeah, look at that.
- 27:02Oh dude, these are no joke. In fact, when I was there, I got
- 27:05a text message from from our good friend Tony over at
- 27:09Southern Collector 14 and he said make sure you have an extra
- 27:12Dole Whip for me. But anyway, OK, so back to that.
- 27:17As you're spending all this money, I'm like, part of me is
- 27:19like, you know, for the same amount of money that we spent on
- 27:24this trip, we could have bought a brand new couch and a brand
- 27:29new state-of-the-art television that we could have used and
- 27:35enjoyed for the next five years, or we could have four days at
- 27:40Disneyland. And, and I know a lot of people
- 27:44have talked about this with cards of why go to the National,
- 27:47Why go to Strongsville? Why go to the West Coast card
- 27:50show when I could buy a really nice card with that amount of
- 27:54money? So my question is like when
- 27:57you're rating experiences versus items like how, how does that
- 28:04work? How do you work through that for
- 28:07you? Yeah.
- 28:08So it let's say the Nationals going to cost me a grand total
- 28:15of $1000 to go to. That's an easy decision.
- 28:19I, I go cheaply. I buy buy cheap plane tickets.
- 28:23I stay in a hotel or, or whatever motel.
- 28:28I once stayed in a Motel 6, I think, and that was I regretted
- 28:32that immediately. I took videos of all the like
- 28:35cockroaches. It was so bad.
- 28:37I remember is in Cleveland. Yes, right.
- 28:41So I stay in cheap hotels, not that cheap anymore and because
- 28:50the experience is so important to me, not in going to the show
- 28:54necessarily, although that's great.
- 28:55I love that. But the hang out with friends,
- 28:58the YouTube, Mike Moynihan puts on a great YouTube get together.
- 29:03There's other events that I was lucky enough to be invited to
- 29:06last year and hope again this year.
- 29:11Just being able to hang out with all these people that you talk
- 29:15to through YouTube or you watch on YouTube and you've never
- 29:18actually talked to. I met a bunch of people that
- 29:21I've watched before. Some people I had never watched
- 29:23before. And now I do watch because I met
- 29:25them in person and really like them.
- 29:28The being able to go and hang out with people.
- 29:31But I will also say there's a there's a meme where a little
- 29:35girl says Porque no Los dos. Why not?
- 29:38Why can't we have both? I want to do the experience and
- 29:43I want to buy cards. But if I had, if I had $1500, I
- 29:49would gladly spend 1000 to go and spend 4 days there and then
- 29:56only have $500.00 of spending money.
- 29:58And some of that would be food, of course, some of the a little
- 30:01bit of card card money. So yeah, I the experience for me
- 30:08is very important. I wouldn't have said that four
- 30:11years ago. I went for the first time in
- 30:132022 and it was, it was awesome. I said I'm going to go back
- 30:18every year, but I never expected it to become what it is now and
- 30:22how important it is now. Now not to dig too deep on this,
- 30:27but do you do you use hobby funds for your trip for hobby
- 30:37events? Or is that like vacation type
- 30:41money, like family type money and then your card money is for
- 30:45cards A? 100% of my hobby money comes
- 30:50from card funds and that includes travel.
- 30:54So, you know, you, The difference is when I buy a card,
- 31:00it's a it's an expense and it's, it's a personal expense.
- 31:04When I travel, you can deduct that from your taxes because
- 31:07we're, it's going, you're going there for YouTube related
- 31:12reasons and a very dedicated tax specialist has said you have to
- 31:19deduct those. But I don't, you know, if I'm
- 31:22buying cards, I don't deduct the cards I'm purchasing when I'm
- 31:26there because those are personal things and not, and I hate to
- 31:31say business expenses, but technically when you pull in
- 31:36revenue income from YouTube, you become a business.
- 31:41Yeah. But yeah, yeah.
- 31:43So to answer your question, it is fully everything I I make,
- 31:48everything I spend on cards and travel for cards comes from
- 31:55YouTube revenue or YouTube income.
- 31:57Yeah, there was a video that I was listening to on the way
- 32:03home. It wasn't your buddy Jeff.
- 32:06It was Boston Card Hunter who you you had as a guest on a
- 32:13sports card clubhouse episode and he was on with Dustin.
- 32:16I, I watched that. So I, yeah, I, I misspoke
- 32:19earlier 'cause I did watch that right before I watched yours.
- 32:22So I was watching that one and then yours popped up and I I
- 32:26switched over with about two minutes left and Dustin and and
- 32:30Boston Card Hunter. That was a good conversation
- 32:32too. It was really interesting
- 32:34because there there is a certain thing where you know it it if if
- 32:41you do an ad or you take a sponsor or if you monetize a
- 32:46video, there are certain people who that upsets them.
- 32:50And so because there is an element of that, there are a lot
- 32:55of people who don't talk about the monetization and the income
- 33:00and, and so a lot of people don't know and they just make
- 33:03assumptions on what people are receiving.
- 33:06And, and you know, what Dustin receives is going to be a lot
- 33:09different than like what I receive, you know, but at the
- 33:12same time, some people just have no idea.
- 33:16And I thought it was cool that the two of them were willing to
- 33:19talk about it. And it was really interesting
- 33:22how quickly Boston Card Hunter got monetized and the to the
- 33:28level. Now granted he had a a rocket
- 33:31ship video which carried a lot of that, but still, there's a
- 33:35substantial amount of money. That's more than I had ever made
- 33:41in a month. The amount of money he made in
- 33:43December was more than I had ever made in a single month.
- 33:46So good for him. He had a, a massive following in
- 33:49Instagram and he's really good at, at promoting his videos and,
- 33:54and chunking them out. And, and so, yeah, I mean, plus
- 33:57it was, it was really interesting.
- 33:58I watched that. I want that guy, that greater
- 34:02former grader to start his own YouTube channel.
- 34:04I found him to be an insanely compelling personality.
- 34:08I know I didn't watch it. I saw it.
- 34:12I don't really know why I didn't watch it.
- 34:14I didn't watch it, though, but I heard it was good.
- 34:17Yeah. Yeah, that I thought that
- 34:21conversation between Nick and and Dustin was really good.
- 34:24I was going to make a point and I I forgot.
- 34:29That's OK. We're getting old.
- 34:30That's what we do. We forget stuff.
- 34:32I I tell my I tell my students all the time I go.
- 34:34These Gray hairs didn't grow themselves guys, you know so.
- 34:39Mine either. Yeah, well, we're, we're 35
- 34:43minutes in. We have covered the, we have, we
- 34:46have informed you on a Dole Whip.
- 34:49We have talked about the breaking news that I broke but
- 34:53did a terrible job of sharing or getting people interested in all
- 34:59of it. All of this is fine.
- 35:00The, the, the travesty is that you didn't know what a Dole Whip
- 35:03was. And we've talked about hobby
- 35:06funds, we've talked about Chris Sewell.
- 35:08I mean, what left is there to talk about?
- 35:12My 16 year old is sending me videos of deer in our yard right
- 35:16now. Nice.
- 35:18Yeah. Do you guys get a lot of deer up
- 35:20there? It's always the same family of 5
- 35:22or 6 deer but yeah most days but it'll never get old.
- 35:28Yeah, yeah. We, where we live, there are,
- 35:33there are, it's a, a large community that has a river that
- 35:37runs through the middle of the community.
- 35:40And my dad lives on the north of the river and we live on the
- 35:44South of the river and the north of the river has tons of deer
- 35:48because they don't have fences. I don't know what it's like in
- 35:51Maine, but in California most people have a perimeter fence
- 35:55around their around their lot and on the north of the
- 36:00community they don't have perimeter fences.
- 36:04So the deer can just walk through 1 yard into the next.
- 36:07And the deer love that 'cause they just eat the heck out of
- 36:10everything. On the South where I live, they
- 36:13there are perimeter fences and so the deer just like it's
- 36:16harder to get this stuff. So they don't really hang out
- 36:18over here. So we do get deer here, but most
- 36:23of the deer I see are out on the golf course or up on the other
- 36:27side of the community where my dad is.
- 36:29But I mean, when my kids were little, 'cause we have, we have
- 36:32golf cart. And when my kids are little,
- 36:35we're little. We used to get in the golf cart.
- 36:38We'd all pile in the golf cart and we would say to each other,
- 36:41all right, how many deer do you think we'll see today, tonight?
- 36:45And we'd go around dusk and we'd all predict and then we'd drive
- 36:49around for like 20 minutes and we'd count the deer that we'd
- 36:52see and we'd see who got the closest.
- 36:55Now, because I was the driver, I would always pick a high number
- 36:59and I would always keep driving until we saw more deer than
- 37:02everyone else had guessed so that I could win 'cause that's
- 37:05just the way that I work. But but it was something we did
- 37:09forever. And many evening we would go out
- 37:13and count over 100 different deer.
- 37:16Wow. 100 Some of these guys are big trophy box too, like just
- 37:23you know, like 8-9 point big guys.
- 37:27Yeah, yeah. That reminds me of when, when my
- 37:30kids were little and we would, you know, we'd be driving home
- 37:32from somewhere that's like 20 minutes away.
- 37:34And I would say, what time do you think we'll get home?
- 37:36And everybody would put in a time.
- 37:38And then because I was driving, I would either slow down or
- 37:41speed up to make sure I was going to win.
- 37:43Yeah, yeah, I love it. We're going 4-4 miles an hour
- 37:46down our Rd. so that my my time hits perfectly.
- 37:49Yeah. Yeah, that's fantastic.
- 37:52I I, I read a book one time about this this kid and he was
- 37:56talking about how his dad would make a rain stop.
- 38:00He would, he would make the rain stop hitting the car when they
- 38:03were driving down the highway. And the kids would have to close
- 38:07their eyes and he would say, OK, I'm going to make the rain stop.
- 38:09Ready in 321. And then the rain would stop and
- 38:13then a couple seconds later start again.
- 38:15And the kids were just like blown away.
- 38:17How their dad could make the rain stop was whenever they went
- 38:20under an overpass. And I'm like, those sorts of dad
- 38:23tricks are just beautiful. I love that stuff.
- 38:26Yes, yes. Those are the things you talk
- 38:28about forever. Oh yeah.
- 38:30Oh yeah. And I mean, I read of that in a
- 38:32book 25 years ago and I still think about it sometimes.
- 38:36I'm like, I think I'm going to use that one one of these days
- 38:40with my adult children. So all right, buddy, rest is a
- 38:46good one. There's I'll rest when I'm dead.
- 38:53All right, That was a good one. That was fun.
- 38:56We'll see what everybody else thinks.
- 38:57You let us know again, if you haven't been to the Sports Card
- 39:01Clubhouse, we do have a poll going right now.
- 39:04What is your favorite non national show?
- 39:06Check that out at sportscardclubhouse.com.
- 39:09Also, if you want to submit your favorite pick up now from
- 39:13January for the February submission, you can do that at
- 39:17Sports Card Clubhouse. Go to the midlife tab and go and
- 39:21submit that. There Anything I'm forgetting,
- 39:24Mike? I don't think so, other than
- 39:28staying alive, Greg. I hit me coughing up.
- 39:33Coughing up a hairball over. There it'll I am just fine.
- 39:38Don't any of you worry out there.
- 39:40But if you are worried and you want to send donations, I am
- 39:45accepting those just in case, yes.
- 39:49Actually, you should donate them to me so I can make sure that
- 39:52they get to Greg's family. That would be fine too.
- 39:56Yeah. All right, buddy.
- 39:58Another fun one. See you in a week.
- 40:00See ya.
