- 0:16Speaker 1: Dude, it's a big week for you brother.
- 0:18Speaker 1: It's a big week.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Oh baby, we're here.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It's rut week, man, it's rut week.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Oh dude, I'm so excited for you.
- 0:24Speaker 2: I'm so excited.
- 0:24Speaker 2: This is the one, this is the one dude, this is probably the most excited I've ever been for race like period, point blank.
- 0:30Speaker 1: How's the taper going?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Good, yeah, yeah, I feel.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Eli and Taper got you ready to rock and roll, oh yeah.
- 0:50Speaker 2: This week I'm really to feel a little antsy again and, just, you know, want to go keep them sharp.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm ready.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Yeah, race day saturday what 10 o'clock?
- 0:53Speaker 1: Saturday, eight o'clock, eight o'clock.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I'm so used to these 10 o'clock races.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Um man, oh, free child fantasy.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, pick, get your picks ready, get your stuff ready, get on there pick mr nick tusa.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Right, so we're here to talk about Headlands, the 27K, this race itself.
- 1:06Speaker 1: 27k is what?
- 1:08Speaker 1: 16 and a half miles, dude, it's not a lot of vert, it's 4,000 feet of vert.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Okay, is that a lot?
- 1:15Speaker 1: No, I feel like California, that's like not a lot.
- 1:19Speaker 2: For that, not crazy.
- 1:19Speaker 2: There might be one big climb in there, but the rest of that's going to be fast flowy.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I mean these trails out here in marin county are the smoothest trails that you'll ever find.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Like you are going to see people dropping like sub five minute miles.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I can guarantee you that no, I can guarantee you so fast, oh dude and like the.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So this is what the seventh stop in the golden trail world series.
- 1:39Speaker 1: It's taking place this saturday, the 14th, in marin county.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Have you run?
- 1:44Speaker 2: run in Marion County.
- 1:44Speaker 2: No, I'm in County no.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I haven't yet.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I really want to.
- 1:48Speaker 2: That's where the big Alta was, so really similar trails.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Dylan Bowman's been like hyping this up.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I'm excited, I'm glad.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I mean, it's kind of cool.
- 1:56Speaker 1: We got a golden trail series race Like.
- 1:57Speaker 1: They just kind of like created this one for the series right, which is unique and different.
- 2:02Speaker 2: yep, um and I feel like it was maybe to make, you know, travel a little bit easier on people just being in the same state.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I mean going from colorado, california I think it's a lot.
- 2:11Speaker 2: It's a lot, yeah, and so for them being able to fly into.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I assume they'll fly into san francisco and then just make the road trip down to mammoth or something.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's right down the not too far mammoth oh, actually mammoth is pretty far.
- 2:21Speaker 1: It's like kind of weird.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like out there, but um, marion is or marin marin county.
- 2:28Speaker 2: It's like right there yep um dude.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It's a unique race format, so it's a separate race from the men to the women.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So, like the men will race on sunday as one, like as just the men's pack, and then the women will race saturday, as I almost kind of.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I kind of like that better.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I don't hate it.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I kind of like that better, I don't hate it.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I kind of like it better, just because I had Meg Cook on the pod and we were talking about this, because one of the points that she made during the US Mountain Running Champs at Cirque in Snowbird was Grayson was having to get out of the way of a lot of men.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yeah, like slower men, yeah.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And it's kind of slowing her down, like slower ben, yeah, and like it's kind of slower down.
- 3:06Speaker 1: So like sure, I I wonder if, like not even I wonder, I know that, like if this race is reset like kind of segmented, I think that would kind of we might have faster times on the women's side.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I think that yeah yeah, allow the women to stand out a little bit more.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah well, some of the women to hop on to probably some of the men and help pace them somewhat so maybe that could affect them.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I don't think it's gonna affect the men's race as much as it's gonna affect the women.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I'd be curious to their take on it, either before or afterwards, to see what they think of it.
- 3:29Speaker 1: But yeah, it's interesting, so dude what do you got for storylines?
- 3:33Speaker 2: um, arguably the most competitive sub-ultra race ever on american soil.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I mean I really put it up there with broken arrow.
- 3:41Speaker 2: It might be be more.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I mean this is, this is 25 men deep of absolute crushers, like top of the game guys that everybody's heard of.
- 3:50Speaker 2: So it's, it's just, it's like an all-star game man.
- 3:53Speaker 2: It's going to be, it's going to be awesome, um, but I mean you have.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I mean you have Patrick showing up anytime.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Patrick and Phil Amon show up.
- 4:01Speaker 2: They've been here, been here too.
- 4:02Speaker 2: You know they were just at a basin, um, so you know they're acclimatized to probably the altitude and you know the time zone and what'd you think of that race?
- 4:11Speaker 1: that was interesting.
- 4:12Speaker 1: That was a very interesting.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I didn't actually I wanted to do like a.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I just got so busy.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I was gonna make a um, like a pre-race and then a post race, but things like this kind of, and then other stuff I'm working on for pike's peak kind of took center stage, but it was interesting, right, I think, compared to like.
- 4:27Speaker 2: If I were to compare it to last year, when I was there, I would say it wasn't.
- 4:29Speaker 2: It wasn't as deep as it was last year, but the top guys were like yeah the top of the top was insane, I mean I think it was.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I mean outside of snowbird, it was the biggest profile that they had in any of the races, like, for instance, like bright that's typically how it is patrick and philimon were there, brighton, norris was there, bright.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Like we were stacked at brighton but we weren't stacked.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Like we didn't have joe gray, which obviously that changes the dynamic shows up.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Mason hadn't showed up yet like there were some forces out there.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Man, it was pretty, pretty interesting, and on the women's side it was pretty crazy too.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I mean, but, dude, that men's field was bananas holy shit, insane.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And we'll, uh, we'll get into maybe a little bit more yeah, we'll talk about that later, but um, but yeah and then a couple other names, um, I mean ella, um, who's in?
- 5:19Speaker 1: hell he's seen first time on american soil.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I was just gonna say I think this is his first time here.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Thanks for confirming, so I know he's um, he's hungry.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Uh, he didn't get to, you know, at tatra sky race that didn't end up happening.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Um, so I think he's, he's really ready to go um gotta be fresh yeah I mean, then you got like you got your us guys, your christian allens, your uh mika's, your mason copies, I just freaking everybody.
- 5:46Speaker 2: And then I mean Roberto De Lorenzi, the dude showed up to, I swear, every sub-Ultra race that has been in existence in 2024.
- 5:52Speaker 2: The guy just, I don't know, his unlimited engine just doesn't get tired.
- 5:56Speaker 2: We'll see I don't know.
- 5:57Speaker 1: He's a freak athlete and this is a fast course?
- 5:59Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll see.
- 6:00Speaker 2: But I'm just what I'm really curious with is I think this race is much different than really anything that they've raced on this year.
- 6:11Speaker 1: It's not like fastest.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Mont Blanc is pretty quick too, but this is like a thousand 2000 feet above sea level, Like you got all the oxygen in the world.
- 6:20Speaker 2: This is so like I don't know it.
- 6:22Speaker 2: It's really hard to to say who the top five is gonna be here at this one.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Strictly because it's not like a pure mountain race, like this is a trail race yeah, for the most part.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I think it's not mountain running, I think it's the best way to describe it, with 16 miles and 4 000 feet of vert at sea level, like that, just it's so easy, it's so fast.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I mean I shouldn't say easy, it's just it's, and it's probably not a technically engaging course.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I would imagine it's California carpet.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So may the fastest man win and fastest woman.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And what I'm.
- 6:52Speaker 2: What I'm really really curious about too, are these people that are doing the back to back.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And I say that because the past two years, uh, when we were doing pikes, you know an ascent yes it's's a pretty crazy race, but when you're ascending it just doesn't put as much toll on the body, and at least for me personally I'm sure other people can attest to this but like a super fast race like this, that really takes a lot out of your life.
- 7:15Speaker 2: It's like I would be absolutely destroyed after a hard 27k like I think I would have raced one or the other yeah, I don't know if I like, I think I would have, and this one or the other.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know if I like.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I think I would have and this is no shade at headlands but I feel like this just wouldn't fit me as an athlete.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Like something like mammoth, maybe a little bit more, you know.
- 7:31Speaker 2: So people that are locking in there, you know, fantasy, free trail stuff.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I would double check after headlands because I have a feeling we're going to.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Oh, I definitely agree.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I definitely agree.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Um, so, one of the some of the storylines I've got we'll start with the men's and I'll go for the women's is, like you said, christian allen returns.
- 7:47Speaker 1: My big question is is can christian allen bounce back after his drop at occ?
- 7:51Speaker 1: Uh, dude, I think he will and and I, like everybody knows this, is you know, uh, this is not a like a hidden secret.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Like I'm a gigantic christian allen fan, but, like, dude, I don't know how much of the like occ livecast you watch but good amount.
- 8:07Speaker 2: He led a lot of that race and very well.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Had that been five miles to mount shorter, you know it's possible he could have.
- 8:15Speaker 1: You know, shout out to eli best in the world, but like it's possible he could have beaten eli in that day, but crazy, um.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Another thing I've got written down is like can remy correct his woes remy's been having?
- 8:25Speaker 1: He's a tough season dude, so I don't know.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Bouncing back after a drop at occ as well, I know he took a hard fall, I think is what it was yep yep um, can he correct on that?
- 8:36Speaker 1: uh, another thing I've got written is mason kopi.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I wonder if mason kopi, who now it's cemented as of this week, wins the overall pro in the circ series.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Um, phenomenal athlete, had an opportunity to hang out with him.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Uh, had an opportunity to race him twice.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Kid is so good yeah, based off the podcast that I listened to with you two, um, I'm really excited for him, especially at this race at the headlands.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I think he can really make a name for himself.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I think so too um a few other ones.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I got in al hussein, with al hussein now coming to american soil for the first time to race, what does that do for patrick?
- 9:09Speaker 1: Can patrick take control of the golden trail world series ranking?
- 9:12Speaker 1: Uh, on the men's side, this is going to be interesting.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I I honestly feel like as good as all you've seen is, and while he is in control right now, I think patrick's the best in the world yep, I really do I think if you're not, if, if you're not getting Eli to start line and you're getting Patrick there, I think Patrick's going to win.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'd say eight out of 10 times, yep, and cause dude, I mean, you don't beat the goat and Joe gray, you don't beat that entire depth of that field.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And then you know and not not show, show up and have a great race later on.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I don't know, I just I don't know it was it was.
- 9:47Speaker 1: I've seen him on the start line, I'm not gonna lie.
- 9:48Speaker 1: I turned around like he was standing behind me on the start line and I was very starstruck.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, my god, that's patrick kipiego, um, but like, just to watch him run is his poetry in motion.
- 9:56Speaker 1: The guy is just an absolute freak athlete.
- 9:58Speaker 1: The other question is, though so I've got some caveats here so phileilemon just can't before.
- 10:04Speaker 1: For some reason, philemon just can't figure it out at altitude, but at series, and all the dude is a force.
- 10:10Speaker 1: This is a low altitude race.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Philemon's got fucking wheels.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, can Philemon, maybe he could put it together I don't know.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I think he can beat Patrick.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I think the only person that can beat Patrick is Philemon at this race.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Personally, I truly do.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I think they're going to work off of each other in this one Like we've never seen before, and it's going to be fun.
- 10:30Speaker 2: It's if it's not technical, for Philemon, he's gone.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, he's so good.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Um, and then the last thing I've got written on the men's side is Brian Whitfield.
- 10:40Speaker 1: So Brian Whitfield is like can he continue on a success?
- 10:43Speaker 1: Like he had great success at the Pikes Peak Ascent two years in a row.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Brian's the kind of guy that'll kind of like fall off the radar a little bit and go like a ninja and train and then show up and smack one of these out of the park.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Do he a great finish last week at Cirque series I think he was took seventh in that field, which was deep as shit, did Brian, I think, and that was super high altitude.
- 11:05Speaker 1: This is a fast race, dude.
- 11:08Speaker 1: I think Brian's got the tools to get it done man.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I think he's going to be up in the top 10, for sure, for sure, for sure.
- 11:12Speaker 1: On the women's side, I've got this like written down with like multiple like explanation points is Anna Gibson, yeah, anna Gibson, yeah, ali Ostrander joins the field.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Can she finally have success at one of these races?
- 11:29Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I've got Alicia Vargo on a start list, who had a great race last year at Mammoth Trail Fest and hasn't put much together since.
- 11:38Speaker 1: But is a force at Mammoth Trail Fest and hasn't put much together since.
- 11:41Speaker 1: But is a force, dude.
- 11:42Speaker 1: We're also getting a like backed up back repeats of the duel between Malia and Judith I was just after OCC.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:50Speaker 1: And then Sylvia Norskar shows up, the Zagama winner.
- 11:54Speaker 1: So I don't know man.
- 11:55Speaker 1: This is the women's field.
- 11:56Speaker 1: The depth is deep.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Oh, it's very deep.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah it's.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I can't tell you who's going to win.
- 12:01Speaker 2: It could literally be 10 people.
- 12:03Speaker 2: It's not as cut and dry as maybe the men's races.
- 12:07Speaker 1: You want to start with the men's field?
- 12:08Speaker 1: I'll let you do predictions.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, hop into it, baby.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Yeah, so first I have Philemon.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Do you really?
- 12:17Speaker 2: I think he's just going to figure it out?
- 12:20Speaker 2: I mean, like we said, second at Sears and all third at Broken Arrow.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I feel, like him and Patrick, they've just been putting together such a smart year.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I don't know how much I'm sure they have a lot of guidance from their team that they have, but just I love the season that they put together.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I think they've done everything perfectly.
- 12:38Speaker 2: I think they're going to be so ready for this.
- 12:40Speaker 2: I'm just really excited for Philemon, I really am.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Second, I have Patrick who, like we said, he's currently tied for the lead in the Golden Trail standings with El Hussein, who's also tied at the top.
- 12:52Speaker 2: He just won A-Basin in what was an incredible time, dude.
- 12:57Speaker 2: His pace was like 640-something.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like sub-7 minute pace.
- 13:02Speaker 2: At that altitude, with over 2,000 feet of vert is absolutely ridiculous.
- 13:05Speaker 1: It's insane.
- 13:08Speaker 2: But yeah, he was third at Sears and all and then one broken arrow this year.
- 13:11Speaker 2: He's unbelievable.
- 13:15Speaker 1: He could perform at altitude.
- 13:16Speaker 2: And then third, el Housine.
- 13:18Speaker 2: First time in the US, like we said, which is a big question mark.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I would say, but, um, but yeah, I mean he's coming off a win on at mont blanc and he's hungry.
- 13:26Speaker 2: He didn't get to race.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Uh, in august, that that touch of sky race.
- 13:29Speaker 2: And when you're not, when you're, when you have training, that's you know you're, you're all completely ready to race.
- 13:37Speaker 2: You show up somewhere and you're not able to burn a match or anything.
- 13:41Speaker 2: So, like he is chomping at the bit I know he is and he is going to be ready to go Um, I mean, if you watched his story last year, uh, golden trail did like a nice little, uh like feature on him and like it's just, it's someone that is so hungry and that just really wants this, like I don't know if there's anyone that this is for his family.
- 14:00Speaker 2: He's trying to feed his village and stuff.
- 14:03Speaker 2: It's insane Coming over here.
- 14:05Speaker 2: I think he knows the opportunity that he has and I think he's going to make the most of it.
- 14:11Speaker 1: I don't know if I'm making this up or if this is real.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Didn't he have visa problems, and that's why he couldn't get it.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Okay, so that is real I thought they talked about that.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I'm glad they got that figured out.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Yeah, so yeah, it's going to be so fun.
- 14:20Speaker 2: I mean he could easily win too.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I mean, the guy, he's got it figured out now I mean after last year I'm working at it he's ready.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Yeah, he's ready.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Fourth, I do have Christian Allen.
- 14:34Speaker 2: He's one of my favorites too.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I think he's got to figure out one of these.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I feel like he's just been so close.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I mean, yes, he did win US Mountain Running Champs 14th at Sears and all 13th at Broken Arrow, and I know that those weren't his best races.
- 14:48Speaker 1: But I feel like had he not dropped from OC, and I wonder what I didn't ask him.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I'm very curious to see what that idea was at OC.
- 14:56Speaker 1: He might've just burned too many matches and was just like fuck this, I'm going to save it for the rest.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Yeah, or realized he wasn't winning.
- 15:03Speaker 1: I don't know, everybody's got different mentality.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he was going for broke and if, if it would have worked out and maybe he would have won, he might've not been doing these races.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Day man so like even Eli, like, oh my gosh that video of him going up that final climb like stuff because of all people.
- 15:19Speaker 1: I couldn't imagine like that.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Like so if eli hemming's stopping I miss must mean like I'm on the floor gasping for air, dying, okay, so like I don't know, just to think about something like that, like how hard that day must have been on those guys.
- 15:31Speaker 1: So yeah, I hope he's recovered.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I just had like I don't know you saw before like ali mac was just in here and she seemed like we were talking about her race and she seemed pretty recovered back from occ and she took.
- 15:42Speaker 1: She took it hard.
- 15:42Speaker 1: So I would imagine you know these are athletes at the highest level.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Right, she's done it before.
- 15:48Speaker 2: That's the only difference, I guess I would say, whereas christian's never ran that distance no, he's right, he won speak up.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yes, he did.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Yeah, 50k he won, speak up 50k, yeah, like it was last year.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Okay, I don't know how long it took him to recover and what he did after the fact.
- 16:02Speaker 1: So that's the million dollar question.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I was like, what's he?
- 16:04Speaker 1: You know?
- 16:05Speaker 1: And it's the same thing with pretty much anybody who raced occ.
- 16:07Speaker 1: That's coming over here like I don't know, you know, like maybe for 15 miles, uh, you can pull it off or however long.
- 16:15Speaker 1: This race is like 27k, so it's possible.
- 16:18Speaker 2: It's possible, yeah and then rounding out the top five, I have roberto de lorenzi, aka mr consistent dude.
- 16:24Speaker 1: His 10k speed is crazy.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Oh, it's insane and I think this is the race where it's like the top guys with like the top 10ks and 5ks are gonna win this.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Um, but yeah, third and golden trail standings, uh, fifth recently at sierras and all.
- 16:36Speaker 2: He just did some races in europe, I think, to gear up um, just some shorter ones.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Um, in italy, I believe.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Um, I think that's the same one that mika was at and a couple other people.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Um, he did pretty well there, so interesting, you didn't have remy in the top five yeah, I.
- 16:51Speaker 2: It's not that I've like given up on him, it's just like I just feel like everyone's kind of caught up to him.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Maybe I think maybe he just hit his stride last year and I don't know well I don't.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Maybe it's possibly burned too many matches in his scheme season yeah, I don't know.
- 17:08Speaker 1: It depends on, like, how much time he took in between or what happened.
- 17:11Speaker 1: He could be fighting off an injury for all we know, we don't know.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Yeah, he seems like the type of guy that something's weird though, like like I feel, like I don't know, like I feel like full gas remy from two years ago, though, would have tried to lead occ wire to wire and he was like in the front pack but like wasn't leading the race.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I don't know, I feel like the heat did scare a lot of people off I feel, like they were, like I don't want to blow up, and they go out and they blow up anyway and it's it's.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It's a tricky game it's a tough race who you got in your back half and sleepers.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah, so I would say Sam Hendry I want to throw out there.
- 17:46Speaker 2: He did really well at Mammoth last year during this time of year.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Brian Whitfield, like you said, obviously Remy.
- 17:57Speaker 2: I mean there's just so many names that I'm looking at here.
- 18:01Speaker 1: it's insane like darren thomas can have a day is there, dude.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Oh, hawk hall is at this one, okay I did miss that I saw that he was at the other one.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Okay, he's.
- 18:08Speaker 2: He's a sleeper at every single race I think pay attention, put some respect on my boy's name.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Oh dude, he's a he's a bad man, dude, hawk call is.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I think once, once Hawk Call figures out who Hawk Call actually is, I raced him.
- 18:21Speaker 1: I shouldn't even say I raced him.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I saw him for five minutes maybe at Cirque Grand Targhee, which was a race he won.
- 18:28Speaker 1: And, dude, is that kid good?
- 18:31Speaker 1: I mean, he beat Mike Sincerity, who literally just set the record on the ground.
- 18:34Speaker 1: He beat Talon Hall.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Alan Hall runs for Brooks.
- 18:37Speaker 1: He literally just spanked everybody.
- 18:38Speaker 1: The kid is really good.
- 18:41Speaker 2: But this isn't a mountain race.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a little bit different, exactly.
- 18:46Speaker 2: But some other Euro crushers you can't forget about Daniel Osans, petru Mamou, daniel Pettis, bart Francesco is even going to be there.
- 18:58Speaker 2: I feel like I feel like francesco, I feel like he's got like the 50k, 50 mile distance, kind of locked in um the shorter stuff.
- 19:06Speaker 2: I don't know he'll compete, he'll be up there, but I don't think it depends on what his dreams look like five, but we'll see, we'll see.
- 19:13Speaker 2: And then one, one guy that I'm really, really wanting to talk about here that I'm I'm really excited for.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Um is his name is.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Look, I'm really excited for is his name is look out for this name, ladies and gentlemen.
- 19:23Speaker 2: His name is Johan DeLeon.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Okay, this kid's from Crested Butte.
- 19:28Speaker 2: He just took second at A-Basin.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Okay, this guy beat Joe Gray and he was right behind Patrick Ipignago.
- 19:38Speaker 2: This was his first race of the year.
- 19:41Speaker 2: This guy hasn't burned any matches.
- 19:42Speaker 2: He's been putting in crazy training, figuring out this sport.
- 19:47Speaker 2: He's a track kid from I can't recall the school he went to.
- 19:52Speaker 2: He went to school in Texas, but he's from Waco.
- 19:54Speaker 2: This guy is as far from the mountains as he can get.
- 19:57Speaker 2: This guy is a flatlander.
- 19:59Speaker 2: You wouldn't think anything of it, but he's been training in crested butte now for like four years.
- 20:07Speaker 2: He's friends with tons of people on the western team.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Uh, jessren small.
- 20:08Speaker 2: And who's the other one that he trains with?
- 20:13Speaker 1: that kate michael?
- 20:14Speaker 1: Is it kate michael?
- 20:14Speaker 2: so he knows kate michael, because I think he's from texas as well and I think they may have went to college or high school or they're from the same town or something like that.
- 20:22Speaker 2: He's the one that told him about these trail races and said hey, dude, you got to get out.
- 20:26Speaker 2: He was supposed to race imaging pass, did not racing that because they switched the course and he didn't like it.
- 20:31Speaker 1: So he's like that would have been nasty to see him and Taylor stack throw down.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Um, but anyway, this kid.
- 20:39Speaker 2: So he works at the brettery in Crested Butte.
- 20:42Speaker 2: He makes bread for a living.
- 20:44Speaker 2: The guy just is a baker, really, yes, and he skis in the winter and he's like I love shredding the pow, I love running.
- 20:52Speaker 2: I think he likes skiing more, but he's beginning to find that he has this insane talent.
- 20:57Speaker 2: I mean his first race.
- 20:58Speaker 2: He gets second behind.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Patrick Best in the world, yeah, the best in the world, and yeah, so he might be there and he might be at this race.
- 21:07Speaker 2: And the reason I say he might be there is because Dylan Bowman had him on the podcast and Dylan straight up said you are my new favorite runner, I want to pay for you to go to these races, I will give you gas money and I want you at the headlands and I want you at um, at um sorry, at mammoth.
- 21:29Speaker 2: So we'll see.
- 21:31Speaker 2: He literally said it, but he's like I gotta work.
- 21:35Speaker 2: He's like I'm gonna he's like dude, I'm gonna call your work he was just like and he's in.
- 21:39Speaker 2: They're like where your work?
- 21:39Speaker 2: He was just like and he's in there.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Like where do you see yourself going in this sport?
- 21:42Speaker 2: And he's just like.
- 21:43Speaker 2: You know, I'm not sure, whatever.
- 21:44Speaker 2: He's like, dude, you're here, like you're literally one of the best in the world right now.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Like even after one race, like I don't care with that competition, like it's interesting.
- 22:05Speaker 2: So we will um one funny story.
- 22:06Speaker 2: You guys can also just go listen to the free show podcast if you want to listen to more about him.
- 22:08Speaker 2: But one funny thing was he went back to uh texas to visit some family and he didn't have any money to um to drive back.
- 22:11Speaker 2: So he hopped into this like um on running was putting on this 5k, hops into it, wins it, wins the 250 bucks he's able to drive back like that's what this?
- 22:19Speaker 2: kind of kid like he's great, he's grinding's grinding, and like this kid wants it, like I can tell, uh, he does the little things.
- 22:26Speaker 2: He was saying how much he's been in the gym, and like he trains and he, I think, has the mental capability of a top professional athlete.
- 22:33Speaker 2: He just needs to be guided and be told, like these races, like he doesn't know about any races, he just needs someone to to tell him.
- 22:40Speaker 2: And so this kid could go out and win if he shows up like seriously, it's, it's insane.
- 22:46Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 22:46Speaker 2: I don't think this is beginner's luck.
- 22:47Speaker 2: I truly don't.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I don't think this is someone that's ignorant.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Um the guy woke up.
- 22:51Speaker 1: You don't just show up and just, oh no, race joe great on the standstill like or beat oh dude, I.
- 22:58Speaker 1: I know most of the people that were in that field.
- 23:00Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 23:01Speaker 1: And I know how good they are.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Like you, don't beat Ace Brown.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Like even an injured Ace Like you don't beat Ace by like six people.
- 23:08Speaker 1: It's crazy, or Brian, or like most of these people.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Jesus Christ.
- 23:12Speaker 2: But, yeah, highly recommend looking this kid up and it's incredible, it's awesome, incredible, it's awesome.
- 23:21Speaker 2: So we'll see we might be seeing him.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Yeah, on a singlet they were saying with a breaderie, uh, at the restaurant that he works for, they're gonna sponsor that, yeah, so um, but yeah, that's my sleeper, really excited.
- 23:28Speaker 1: All right, I like it, I like it all right, I'm gonna, I'm gonna hop into my my top five here so first, I'm going patrick and I literally what I have written down is patrick is the best in the world right now and I definitely have to say that I think there's no no doubt about it.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Having seen him at numerous races now and seeing what he's been able to do, I think it's I'm going to give it to him.
- 23:48Speaker 1: And second, I'm going to go, roberto De Lorenzi, and I just think his, like his, he, he did this insane 10 K block over the fall, or sorry, in the winter, winter, maybe it was the fall.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Um, dude, dude is fast, dude is so fast.
- 24:04Speaker 1: So I'm gonna go, roberto, and I think this is a type of course that lends itself really well to maybe the non-mountain runner who's got the best running economy, who's got the best speed.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Um, in third day, I'm gonna go el hussein.
- 24:17Speaker 1: I I really do believe I think he'll get outkicked by someone like a Roberto De La Renze or like a Patrick Kipaniego.
- 24:24Speaker 1: In fourth, I've got Mason Copey.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I think Mason Copey shocks the world.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I really do.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 24:30Speaker 1: I'm kind of buying stock in this kid.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I thought he had a great race.
- 24:33Speaker 1: This is if your boy doesn't show up from Crested Butte.
- 24:42Speaker 2: I don't know, we'll see.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Maybe that kid shows up.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I don't know, because he did beat Mason.
- 24:44Speaker 1: But yeah, I think Mason has the ability to get it done In fifth and the only reason I've got him in fifth is because I just don't know how he is coming off of OCC.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I believe he's hungry.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I just don't know what that's going to look like in the legs.
- 24:57Speaker 1: It's going to look like in the legs is going to be Christian Allen.
- 24:59Speaker 1: I think he's got.
- 25:00Speaker 1: He's got the tools to win this race.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I just don't, like I said, I don't know what's going to happen after OCC.
- 25:04Speaker 1: In the back half I do have Hawk call.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I think Hawk, if this was a mountain race, which mammoth is coming up following week.
- 25:13Speaker 1: If this is a mountain race, I think Hawk will place much higher.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I think this is just a such a speedy race.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I don't know how it's going to look.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Remy, I just have question marks next to it.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I don't really know what kind of Remy we're going to get.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Unfortunately, petru Mamu is also in this field and I just wrote old next to that.
- 25:30Speaker 1: No offense to Petru.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Mamu.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Fun name.
- 25:32Speaker 2: To see, though it is a fun name to see Philemon.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I don, like I said, his kryptonite's altitude for some reason, but that dude can rip man.
- 25:49Speaker 1: If it's his race, it's his race.
- 25:51Speaker 1: I think the dude is so good.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Um, so I've got philomon in the mix.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Tyler mccandless is in this race as well yep um, and I think, yeah, he's kind of always been the last few years, has been in, like done most of the races against joe.
- 26:04Speaker 1: It's kind of in joe's shadow.
- 26:05Speaker 1: So I kind of use that as kind of like the bar to kind of measure that against some of the other competition right um, and if you're kind of right behind joe, I think you're, you're pretty, pretty solid, so I could see him in the mix.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Brian whitfield um, dude, brian is so solid.
- 26:20Speaker 1: You know, like I said, he's like kind of this ninja where he'll like disappear, like he doesn't race a ton, but when he does, like he's so good, um, and just so consistent where's he training?
- 26:31Speaker 2: right now he's here.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I think he's in the spring.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I just saw actually, you know, I just saw him on bar trail with karen doing a workout um, and yeah, it's the best my knowledge is of now.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I know he's not signed up for uh.
- 26:43Speaker 1: He shouldn't.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I know he's not doing the extent at least I don't think he is.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Uh Again, last year top 10 in the Ascent in arguably the most competitive race that we've ever had on American soil.
- 26:52Speaker 1: I don't know, I wrote down seventh next to his name.
- 26:56Speaker 1: I just have a feeling Brian's going in the top 10.
- 26:58Speaker 1: And I could see the seventh somewhere between that sixth and tenth mark.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I think he could do it.
- 27:03Speaker 1: And Noah Williams dude, my teammate for las partiva.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I know noah's got wheels, he had a great finish at series and all.
- 27:11Speaker 1: I don't know if this is going to be his jam at something like I'm surprised to see him on this.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Honestly, I was too awesome I think he'd be better in a mammoth race.
- 27:18Speaker 1: He did race mammoth last year but, like, unfortunately got lost like everybody else did, and we'll talk about that when we get to the mammoth episode.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Um, but yeah, that's what I've got but he wasn't on mammoth, was he?
- 27:28Speaker 1: No, I didn't see him.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Maybe I gotta test, maybe he just wanted to race something different, which, yeah, see a new part of the world when I saw him at the las partiva group run, what he said to me was that he was doing like golden trail.
- 27:40Speaker 1: But he didn't give me.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And I know he was at tatra, oh and that got canceled.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Uh, he was at series and All.
- 27:47Speaker 1: So he'll be at Headlands.
- 27:48Speaker 1: It's three races.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 27:51Speaker 1: I would imagine maybe he's trying to get on this.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I think if he wants to, he probably can get on the start list.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Maybe he's got something else going on, I don't know.
- 27:56Speaker 1: So that's my take on the men.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Let's move on to the women.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I what I got here, I'm just going to go with my top five.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Dude, we've got some names.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we've got some names baby.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I'm going to start off with my fifth place pick.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I'm going to go Mao Yao, who is the first place OCC runner, and the only reason I've got her that deep is because of how recovered is she from OCC?
- 28:20Speaker 1: That's the question I'm going to have with a lot of these OCC racers.
- 28:23Speaker 1: And fourth, um and fourth, I've got rachel drake, 235, 28 marathon.
- 28:34Speaker 1: I listen, I saw her alta and she has wheels.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Dude, rachel is a really cool human and a really fast runner, so I've got her in fourth.
- 28:39Speaker 1: And third, I'm gonna go madalena floria, another beast marathoner oh yeah, um, girl has you know, arguably, arguably the best marathoner in the race, I would say.
- 28:48Speaker 1: And second, I'm going to go Judith wider and one of the goats, I have to say she's one of the best of all time and will go down as one of the best of all time.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Such range, you got to remember, dude, like Mammoth, is a fast race too.
- 29:01Speaker 1: It only has, it's like, less than 4000 feet for the distance, so, but it just says at altitude, and you just than 4 000 feet for the distance, so but it just says at altitude.
- 29:11Speaker 1: And judas ripped that course last year and won um.
- 29:13Speaker 1: And first I'm going home field advantage um, she's fresh, she's fast and I'm going on a gibson dude love it I think, I don't know gibson takes the dub.
- 29:20Speaker 2: I love that, so all right, yeah, I think it's gonna be super, super dependent on, like, when a lot of these people come over to the states yes, how long they're here?
- 29:29Speaker 2: Because yeah, yeah, I mean, who know I?
- 29:32Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 29:33Speaker 2: So all right, but yeah, for me I'll start at five as well.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Uh, if grayson murphy shows up she's, she's getting married.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Okay, she is okay.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Okay well then, I will replace her with madalena floria because of her incredible marathon, which I think she, I think she runs even sub 230.
- 29:50Speaker 2: I think it's 220 something I think you're right.
- 29:52Speaker 2: So fast, insane um, so her uh, fourth, judith wider, second at occ one, mount blanc.
- 29:59Speaker 2: I think a lot of the people we see in the top here are going to be the similar top pack at mount blanc, which which was Judith Meow Meow and, I believe, madalena Florida.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Those are the three.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Sophia is not racing, and then Sophia is not racing, yep.
- 30:16Speaker 2: And then third on a Gibson, second at Broken Arrow, vk, sixth at Sierra's and all uh, the record, um, course record at the rendezvous mountain hill climb.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Uh, and these are her home trails.
- 30:27Speaker 2: She, uh, she just moved here.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I think it was top of the year.
- 30:27Speaker 2: She moved to Marin, and so course record at the rendezvous mountain hill climb.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Uh, and these are her home trails.
- 30:28Speaker 2: She, uh, she just moved here, I think it was top of the year.
- 30:31Speaker 1: She moved to marin, and so she knows these trails and that's a big thing, that's a big thing, uh.
- 30:36Speaker 2: But yeah, it seems like a lot of her training has been on.
- 30:38Speaker 2: I checked her strava uh, this type of rolling terrain, so I think she's like locked in and ready to go yeah, I could definitely see and I do and like.
- 30:47Speaker 1: The thing is she like she went to tantra, so she followed up after series and all went to tantra.
- 30:52Speaker 1: That race got canceled.
- 30:53Speaker 1: I think she's gonna be fresh man, yeah, yeah only race like really once in the last, like I mean what'd she run like five miles of tantra before it got right, like before everybody got dq'd.
- 31:03Speaker 1: So I'm wondering if, like, that's that freshness, it's because judith's gonna do this, gonna have occ in her legs also yep all right you know, a lot of it's gonna depend and honest training.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Honestly, she doesn't train super high volume either, so it's she's just fast she doesn't even have to yeah running for so long that like it.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Just that doesn't even matter, you're just so good.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Yeah, uh, second, meow meow one occ.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Third at mont Blanc.
- 31:27Speaker 2: If you know her, she goes out.
- 31:28Speaker 2: If she shows up, she's going to go hard.
- 31:31Speaker 2: And I can guarantee you that she's going to be leading for the first whatever, and then people will eventually catch up.
- 31:36Speaker 2: But um, yeah, if she can hold on, I think she can win, and then and then.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Joyce trail standings is joyce naru coming?
- 31:45Speaker 2: yeah, yeah, yeah, I saw her there, yeah, yeah yeah, one broken arrow um 12th at sears and all she didn't.
- 31:51Speaker 2: I don't think she had the race that she wanted, but I think with this type of race I'm it's.
- 31:56Speaker 2: I guess broken arrow was a little bit more vert, but not a ton more.
- 32:01Speaker 2: I think broken arrow was what right around 4 000 for the 23k, something like that or 5, 45, I think it's four and so this is what right around four, isn't it?
- 32:10Speaker 2: this was right around four, yeah so I think I bold prediction, but I think a lot of the people that did well at broken arrow are gonna do very well here that's my that's.
- 32:20Speaker 1: That's that's what I think, and but again, even lower because broken arrows like I don't know everybody pictures, and this is kind of weird to say like oh, broken arrow is a mountain race and while it is, it's fast yeah, broken arrow.
- 32:31Speaker 2: So it's california mountains.
- 32:33Speaker 2: I should say we're not just like the big sierras, like it's not very technical.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Yeah, at least no according to me but um, but yeah.
- 32:41Speaker 2: And then, like some sleepers, um danny moreno she's also fast as shit.
- 32:45Speaker 2: She ran a 111 marathon, or half marathon, I think, at the beginning of the year with Tabor Six at OCC.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Yep California Trails.
- 32:53Speaker 2: She knows this stuff.
- 32:54Speaker 2: It might not be her exact domain, since she's in Mammoth, but I expect her to do really well.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Rachel Drake, like you said, and then Mrs Consistent Caitlin Felder.
- 33:06Speaker 1: You can't bet against her, no, you can't bet against her.
- 33:08Speaker 2: She's like DeLorenzi.
- 33:09Speaker 2: You have to Sylvia Nordskar.
- 33:12Speaker 2: I think she's more of a mountain-y type runner, so we'll have to see with this.
- 33:17Speaker 2: I don't know what she has in those fast legs, but we'll see.
- 33:20Speaker 1: It's hard to compare Zagama, or something like that, to this.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Exactly MK.
- 33:25Speaker 2: She's super fast.
- 33:26Speaker 2: I could see mk doing something.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Julia font uh.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Jade bellsberg, ali mack, ali max gonna be there, she's not gonna be, she's not gonna be there.
- 33:33Speaker 1: No, max, not gonna be there.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Okay, confirm that off 35 minutes ago, yep uh, it's gonna be fun seeing fellow coloradan um allison baka will be, there um ali ostrander I believe allison baka.
- 33:47Speaker 1: I gotta find out.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I think she's also coached by elaine tabor.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Really, I'm pretty sure.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Okay, I mean, I probably shouldn't say it on the podcast, but I'm almost like because like I've had tabor.
- 33:56Speaker 1: I don't know unless they're like very close with her yeah, I've had tabor listen to our episodes and then like, text me like oh no, allison's baca is not going to be at this race.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Interesting, I don't know that could be.
- 34:05Speaker 2: That could be, that could be.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Um, but one like sleeper that I'm kind of excited about on the women's side, if she does show up as ali ostrander, like she's got freaking wheels and like if a race like this.
- 34:16Speaker 2: I think that this really really suits her and I think she's excited for that.
- 34:19Speaker 1: I think she just needs to put it together.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that's, it hasn't had she has david roche on her side, so like anything is freaking bad.
- 34:25Speaker 1: It's like having super humans on your side yeah, and she and he believes in her.
- 34:30Speaker 2: So he believes in her, I believe in her.
- 34:32Speaker 2: We'll see, uh, plus, she's normal athletes yeah yeah, super cool, yeah, um, and then zerk, series.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Uh, girl giselle, slop boom will be there.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Very good to see.
- 34:42Speaker 1: She's always.
- 34:42Speaker 1: We both have raced her.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Yep, yep, absolute crusher and then east coaster, lauren gregory.
- 34:47Speaker 2: See what she can do.
- 34:48Speaker 2: She's a track runner as well.
- 34:49Speaker 1: She's very similar, I would say, to like anna gibson so I would not be surprised to see her up there, but again crazy deep field it's.
- 34:56Speaker 2: This is gonna be fun.
- 34:57Speaker 2: I'm I'm really hoping.
- 34:58Speaker 2: I haven't heard much about the broadcast for this, but I can imagine, based off the area, they are going to have internet, like they did for the big alta.
- 35:07Speaker 2: So this should be some pretty crystal clear, solid.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Another thing, too is, with how smooth these trails are, bikers are going to be able to be on here following them so yeah I think we're going to be getting, uh, a pretty gnarly live stream.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I'm stoked dude.
- 35:21Speaker 1: I wonder how they're gonna.
- 35:22Speaker 1: I guess I don't think mountain outposts would be involved because they do a lot of the live.
- 35:26Speaker 2: I don't't know who would put.
- 35:26Speaker 2: I think just be golden.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah oh they do like their own production.
- 35:30Speaker 2: I think.
- 35:31Speaker 2: So I think they will, I think anytime they can do a live stream, they want to.
- 35:34Speaker 2: So yeah, we'll see, we'll see.
- 35:36Speaker 1: It's interesting yeah, I had Mark live stuff on the mountain dude like they've laid like cable at one point in time from the summit to the start, yeah, and like still had hard times and like try to do his dish before dude, it's really interesting like some of the shit that they've done in the past, like try, it's crazy because the technology is going to catch up oh, it's going to.
- 36:01Speaker 1: I mean, let me in the next five years, once we can really figure out this live stream stuff, I think that's what's gonna absolutely explode the sport, I agree dude so crazy, especially because I know like I'm just like fresh off a conversation with ally mac and like just the like some of the information I just got from her, like on how you know, just like how competitive the sport is getting, is so crazy you know, it's interesting, um, but yeah, all right.
- 36:23Speaker 1: So that's that.
- 36:24Speaker 1: That's headlands in a nutshell.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Hope you guys got some value out of this one for your free trail picks Doesn't matter, because it's too fucking late to even change your picks.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Not our problem.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Sorry about that.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Everyone.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Have a great rest of your week.
