Latest / Loud & Lifted / Quick Lift: How Strength Training Rebuilds Confidence After Trauma
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to a loud and lifted quick lift, the
- 0:02shorter episode where we take a few of the biggest
- 0:04takeaways from the full loud and lifted conversation
- 0:07and make them a little bit more practical. And
- 0:09today we're talking about my conversation from
- 0:12Rachel Druckenmiller. Rachel is known for helping
- 0:15people get unmuted, which obviously is very aligned
- 0:18with loud and lifted. We love a woman who wants
- 0:20people to stop holding back. But this conversation
- 0:23took a different, more personal direction than
- 0:25what she normally talks about. Rachel shared
- 0:28the story of being hit by a truck six years ago
- 0:30while she was out for a run. She suffered a spinal
- 0:33fracture and recovery was not just physical,
- 0:36it was emotional, mental, and it changed how
- 0:39she trusted her body. It changed how she moved
- 0:41through the world. What really stuck with me
- 0:44is that Rachel just didn't think her way back
- 0:46to confidence. She literally built her way back
- 0:49through lifting, through movement, through showing
- 0:53up when she was scared. Through working with
- 0:56people who helped her believe she could do more
- 0:58than she thought. And I think that's such an
- 1:01important lesson because we talk about confidence
- 1:03a lot, like all the time, and it's not something
- 1:07you can just magically have. Like, just be confident.
- 1:10Okay, great. Super helpful. But we all know that's
- 1:13not how it works. Confidence is built. And in
- 1:16Rachel's case, it was built one rep at a time.
- 1:20So here are the three big takeaways from that
- 1:22conversation. Takeaway number one confidence
- 1:25is really self -trust Rachel shared something
- 1:29in the episode that I loved she said confidence
- 1:31comes from this idea of Trusting fully and that
- 1:35makes so much sense Because confidence is not
- 1:38just walking into room with great posture and
- 1:41a good outfit. Although let's be clear those
- 1:43things help But real confidence it's deeper than
- 1:46that. It's asking. Do I trust myself? Do I trust
- 1:50myself to keep going when something is hard?
- 1:52Do I trust myself to recover if something does
- 1:54not go perfectly? Do I trust myself to do what
- 1:58I said I was going to do? After Rachel's accident,
- 2:01she did not trust her body the same way. And
- 2:03of course she didn't. She had been through something
- 2:06traumatic. She was scared to move, scared to
- 2:08hurt again, and scared to push too hard. So when
- 2:11she started lifting, it was not glamorous. It
- 2:14was not some dramatic comeback montage. It was
- 2:18small weights, shaky arms. tears and training
- 2:21sessions and a lot of fear. But then she kept
- 2:24showing up anyway. And that is where confidence
- 2:27started to be rebuilt. Not because she felt amazing
- 2:31right away, but because she kept proving to herself,
- 2:34I can do this. And that applies to all of us.
- 2:37Hopefully your thing is not lifting after an
- 2:39accident, but maybe it's speaking up in a meeting.
- 2:42or setting a boundary or applying for the job,
- 2:45starting the business. Maybe it's walking into
- 2:48a room where you felt completely out of place.
- 2:51We want confidence first, but usually confidence
- 2:54comes after the proof. Action item, pick one
- 2:57small promise you can keep to yourself this week.
- 3:01One, not a full personality transplant, not like
- 3:03I'm changing my whole life by Monday. Just pick
- 3:06something simple. a 10 minute walk, a one workout,
- 3:09going to bed 30 minutes earlier, sending the
- 3:12email, making the appointment, asking for help.
- 3:15The point is not that the action has to be huge.
- 3:18The point is that you do what you said you were
- 3:20going to do. That is how self -trust gets built.
- 3:25Takeaway number two, strength changes how you
- 3:28show up. One of my favorite parts of the conversation
- 3:31was when Rachel talked about how getting physically
- 3:33stronger changed how she carried herself. And
- 3:35I mean literally. She talked about a stronger
- 3:38core, stronger back, stronger glutes, and how
- 3:40that changed the way she walked into a room.
- 3:44It's making me change how I'm sitting here right
- 3:45now actually thinking about it. But I love this
- 3:48because sometimes we get a little weird about
- 3:50women caring about fitness, clothes, hair, appearance,
- 3:54all of it. There's this tension of, well, it
- 3:56shouldn't matter how you look. And sure, that's
- 3:59fine. In a perfect little world with no mirrors
- 4:02and no social media photos, maybe. But the real
- 4:05point, it's not vanity. The point is how you
- 4:08feel. When you feel stronger, you show up differently.
- 4:11When you feel good in your body, you speak differently.
- 4:15When you are proud of yourself, you carry that
- 4:17into the room. Rachel even shared that someone
- 4:20once told her she had main character energy,
- 4:23which I love because that's exactly what we're
- 4:25talking about. It's not arrogance. It's just
- 4:28presence. The difference between walking in a
- 4:31room apologetically and walking in like, you
- 4:34know, you have something to offer for women that
- 4:37matters because a lot of us have been taught
- 4:40to shrink. And then, of course, there's the whole
- 4:42be confident, but not too confident, be polished,
- 4:45but not intimidating, be strong, but not difficult.
- 4:48Have opinions, but maybe soften them with six
- 4:51exclamation points and adjust checking. It's
- 4:54exhausting, truly. Rachel's story is such a good
- 4:58reminder that strength does not stay in the gym.
- 5:01It follows you to work conversations, leadership
- 5:04into the way you ask for what you need. Action
- 5:08item, this week, notice how you're physically
- 5:10showing up. Not in a judgmental way, not in a
- 5:13go critique yourself in every window reflection
- 5:16assignment. Please don't. Just notice. Do you
- 5:20walk into rooms like you belong there? Do you
- 5:22sit like you have something to contribute? Do
- 5:25you rush when you speak? Do you apologize before
- 5:27you even make the point? Do you make yourself
- 5:29smaller without even realizing it? Evaluate that
- 5:33and then pick one small physical cue. Maybe it's
- 5:37planting your feet before you speak, sitting
- 5:38up a little taller, sitting at the table, taking
- 5:41a breath before you answer. Stop starting every
- 5:44sentence with sorry. Sometimes your body has
- 5:47to lean before your brain catches up. Takeaway
- 5:50number three, you don't rebuild alone. This was
- 5:54probably the part of the conversation I loved
- 5:55most. Rachel talked about her trainer, her husband,
- 5:58her vocal coach, her producer, her friends, all
- 6:01these people who played a role in helping her
- 6:04rebuild. And she used the phrase borrowing belief.
- 6:08This is really good because sometimes you don't
- 6:11have enough of belief in yourself. You are not
- 6:13there. You cannot fake it. Sometimes you need
- 6:15someone else to say, yes, you can, until you
- 6:19believe it too. Rachel's trainer did just that
- 6:22for her. She helped create a safe place for Rachel
- 6:25to try her things again. And Rachel trusted her
- 6:27enough to borrow that belief. That is not weakness.
- 6:31That is wisdom. And this connects to something
- 6:34we talk about all the time on Loud and Lifted.
- 6:36No one is doing this alone. No one. Not the strongest
- 6:41woman you know. not the most successful woman
- 6:43you follow, not the person who looks like she
- 6:45has everything figured out. And Rachel said something
- 6:47that really hit me. Earlier in her life, she
- 6:50had to practice asking for help. She used to
- 6:53believe asking for help would make people think
- 6:54she was weak or incapable. And I think so many
- 6:57women can understand that. We are great at helping.
- 7:01We will organize the thing, we will send the
- 7:03text, we will bring the food, and check on everyone
- 7:05while carrying the invisible load. And somehow,
- 7:09we remember someone else's kid needs a white
- 7:11shirt by Thursday. But asking for help ourselves,
- 7:14suddenly we're all, no, I'm fine. Are we though?
- 7:18Rachel's point was that people who love you want
- 7:20to help you, but they cannot support what they
- 7:22do not know. Action item, ask yourself this,
- 7:26whose belief do I need to borrow right now? Maybe
- 7:30it's a coach, trainer, friend, mentor, therapist.
- 7:33Maybe it's a group of women who will let you
- 7:35talk yourself out of that thing you said you
- 7:36wanted. Then do one thing. Send the text, book
- 7:41the session, ask the question, say it out loud,
- 7:44and tell someone when you're stuck. You do not
- 7:47have to make a dramatic announcement. This does
- 7:49not have to be a TED Talk in your group chat.
- 7:51Just let one person in. This is how support starts.
- 7:55So to recap, Rachel's story gave us three big
- 7:57reminders. First, confidence is self -trust.
- 8:00It is built by keeping promises to yourself,
- 8:03even small ones. Second, strength changes how
- 8:06you show up. When you feel strong, capable, and
- 8:09grounded, the energy goes with you in every room.
- 8:12And third, you do not rebuild alone. Borrow belief,
- 8:17ask for help, let someone support you before
- 8:19you hit the wall. And here's the line I keep
- 8:22coming back to, you don't have to wait for confidence,
- 8:25you have to build it. One rep, one walk, one
- 8:28conversation, one promise, one ask for help,
- 8:31one small step back to yourself. Rachel's story
- 8:34started with something traumatic, but the lesson
- 8:37is not only for people who have been through
- 8:39a major accident, it's for anyone who feels stuck.
- 8:42Anyone who feels disconnected from herself or
- 8:45anyone who's been waiting to feel ready. Anyone
- 8:48who needs to stop thinking about the comeback
- 8:50and start taking the first step. And that is
- 8:54what loud and lifted is all about. Getting louder,
- 8:57getting stronger, getting lifted and not doing
- 9:00it alone. If this resonated with you, go listen
- 9:03to the full conversation with Rachel. It's a
- 9:05powerful personal and such a good reminder that
- 9:07confidence is not something we say. It is something
- 9:10we build. Thanks for listening to this quick
- 9:13lift. Until next time, stay loud and stay lifted.
