Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now we were contacted earlier in the week by a
- 0:02Speaker 1: young man whose mum has had her car extensively damaged
- 0:06Speaker 1: by thieves, as I understand it, and debraah Fisher joins
- 0:10Speaker 1: me on the line right now. Good morning, Deborah, Good
- 0:13Speaker 1: morning Katie. How are you not too bad? Can you
- 0:16Speaker 1: tell me what happened to your car?
- 0:19Speaker 2: So five o'clock Saturday morning, I'm sound asleep in bed
- 0:23Speaker 2: and I get a phone call that I thought was
- 0:25Speaker 2: a prank call at first, and it ended up being honest,
- 0:29Speaker 2: and it was the police, and they said they're at
- 0:30Speaker 2: the front of my house. So I walked out to
- 0:33Speaker 2: the front of my house and a stolen car had
- 0:36Speaker 2: rammed into the side in the back of my car,
- 0:39Speaker 2: so damage my car quite extensively and completely rode off
- 0:43Speaker 2: the stolen persons the stolen car as well.
- 0:46Speaker 1: So, oh my goodness, Yes, what a call.
- 0:50Speaker 2: A great way to wake up.
- 0:51Speaker 1: No, what a call to wake up to.
- 0:53Speaker 2: That's luck.
- 0:54Speaker 1: That's unbelievable. Yeah, I know, tell me how bad is
- 0:59Speaker 1: this damage to your car?
- 1:01Speaker 2: To my car? The whole quarter panel and the back
- 1:04Speaker 2: door and all underneath. I don't know the technical term
- 1:08Speaker 2: for it, that all of the the axle that holds
- 1:11Speaker 2: the two wheels together has all bent, and one of
- 1:14Speaker 2: my wheels, the back wheel and the driver's side is
- 1:17Speaker 2: completely buckled and ripped apart. And yeah it's there's yeah,
- 1:22Speaker 2: quite a few thousand dollars worth of damage.
- 1:24Speaker 1: All this while you were asleep. Yes, and absolutely no
- 1:29Speaker 1: fault of your own. Your car is just parked what
- 1:32Speaker 1: is it? Just parked on the street, just.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Parked on the side of the road. Yeah, so just
- 1:37Speaker 2: out the front of my house. I share with some people,
- 1:40Speaker 2: so the cars are all in the driveway and I
- 1:42Speaker 2: just parked on the side of the road and yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 2: just minding my own business and wake up. And you know,
- 1:48Speaker 2: I own my car. So now I am left with
- 1:51Speaker 2: no car, so I'm having to walk to work and yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 2: oh dead.
- 1:57Speaker 1: That is unbelievable. It is because do you know what
- 2:01Speaker 1: the thing is about your vehicle? Is it your independence?
- 2:05Speaker 1: You know, no matter who you are, no matter where
- 2:07Speaker 1: you come from, no matter what it's worth, it is
- 2:09Speaker 1: your independence. And that's what I always teach my kids.
- 2:12Speaker 1: You know, you've got to look after your car because
- 2:15Speaker 1: it's your independence to get to where you need to go.
- 2:18Speaker 1: So for you to be in this situation through no
- 2:20Speaker 1: fault of your own is pretty bloody disgraceful, it really is.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and I feel for the people that had their
- 2:28Speaker 2: cast all and as well, like they're lost out as well.
- 2:30Speaker 2: So two people just went to bed on Friday night,
- 2:33Speaker 2: work up Saturday morning and our both of our worlds
- 2:35Speaker 2: have just changed now.
- 2:37Speaker 1: So do you have any idea how much these repair
- 2:40Speaker 1: bills are going to cost?
- 2:42Speaker 2: For myself? I don't just yet. I've been working with
- 2:47Speaker 2: the lovely people from Anti Oh for good mistake, I've
- 2:53Speaker 2: forgotten the name of it Anti Towing, and they're going
- 2:57Speaker 2: to tow the car for me and I have to
- 2:59Speaker 2: take it to it tresh repairer. I can't even drive
- 3:02Speaker 2: it like it's it's completely undrivable. So that I've had
- 3:06Speaker 2: a mechanic have a look at it and he said
- 3:08Speaker 2: there's there's quite a bit of damage.
- 3:09Speaker 1: So yeah, now tell me as well, you know, is
- 3:13Speaker 1: insurance going to cover it?
- 3:16Speaker 2: Unfortunately no, I can't claim from the owner of the
- 3:20Speaker 2: stolen vehicle's insurance because they weren't in charge of the
- 3:23Speaker 2: car and double am I have told me that they
- 3:27Speaker 2: won't cover me. And unfortunately last year I had a
- 3:32Speaker 2: bit of a stay in hospital for a little while
- 3:34Speaker 2: and some health concerns, and I changed my rego from
- 3:38Speaker 2: MT from Sorry, from Sinsland to the NT and it
- 3:42Speaker 2: just completely got lost in the in the day to
- 3:46Speaker 2: day living, and I didn't renew my insurance. So I've
- 3:50Speaker 2: got the compel free third party with my registration, but
- 3:53Speaker 2: not insurance for myself unfortunately.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Oh no, So you're in a situation right now where
- 4:00Speaker 1: where you literally have to foot the bill for this.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I do? I do?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. That is.
- 4:11Speaker 1: That's such a terrible situation to be in. Are you, like,
- 4:18Speaker 1: are you going to be able? Are you going to
- 4:20Speaker 1: be able to manage?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Well, I'm going to try. I'm gonna there's opportunities to
- 4:27Speaker 2: work right now. So I think I'm going to be
- 4:29Speaker 2: getting a probably a second job, but I think he
- 4:32Speaker 2: just nearly fifty eight. I have to get a second
- 4:34Speaker 2: job to be able to afford to pay for the
- 4:36Speaker 2: repairs and to if it's not repair able, then I
- 4:40Speaker 2: have to get myself another car. So yeah, it's not
- 4:43Speaker 2: really you know, if you go to bed on a
- 4:46Speaker 2: Friday night and wake up on a Saturday morning and
- 4:49Speaker 2: the car that I own because I owned my car.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Is you know, I just it's quite I'm just indescribable
- 4:57Speaker 2: how how you feel. It's it's kind of just shocking
- 5:01Speaker 2: that I feel.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Really honestly, I feel really sad for you. That is
- 5:06Speaker 1: such a shitty situation to be in again, through no
- 5:09Speaker 1: fault of your own, your car being run into by
- 5:12Speaker 1: a stolen vehicle, and then to wind up, you know,
- 5:16Speaker 1: in a situation where you're not in covered not covered
- 5:20Speaker 1: insurance wise. Look, sometimes we you know, we do have
- 5:25Speaker 1: very generous people listen to the show, so you know,
- 5:29Speaker 1: we'll keep we'll keep you posted if if there is
- 5:31Speaker 1: any way that anybody can sort of help. But I
- 5:35Speaker 1: really feel for you, deb what a difficult situation you're in.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Thank you so much for telling my story because I
- 5:43Speaker 2: know I'm just one of many unfortunately that if this
- 5:46Speaker 2: has happened to it, it's all too frequent.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just so sad, And you know what, like
- 5:52Speaker 1: the thing is what you've actually I think done for
- 5:55Speaker 1: us today though as well is you know, we talk
- 5:57Speaker 1: a lot about these different crimes, and we talk a
- 6:00Speaker 1: lot about cars being stolen, and sometimes I don't think
- 6:02Speaker 1: that people truly comprehend or that our decision makers truly
- 6:07Speaker 1: comprehend then the impact that what can be seen as
- 6:10Speaker 1: a really petty crime actually has a huge impact on
- 6:14Speaker 1: an individual's life and on your livelihood.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And that's what I've spoken to my
- 6:20Speaker 2: family about. Like, you know, I've owned my car, I've
- 6:23Speaker 2: worked hard all my life, and like Sudd, nearly fifty
- 6:26Speaker 2: eight years of age, I've now got to get a
- 6:28Speaker 2: second job to be able to, like I want to
- 6:30Speaker 2: pay for ten years for another loan for a car.
- 6:33Speaker 2: So you know, it's impacted me greatly. I have to
- 6:36Speaker 2: walk to work, I have to Like yesterday, I walked
- 6:38Speaker 2: home and got rained on before I got home. So
- 6:42Speaker 2: it's not a big thing, but it is a big thing.
- 6:44Speaker 2: At the same plan, it's something that I shouldn't have
- 6:46Speaker 2: to be going through because I didn't do anything wrong.
- 6:49Speaker 1: That's exactly right. And you know, in life, I always
- 6:53Speaker 1: think that there's certain decisions that we make that can
- 6:56Speaker 1: have an impact on us that we've then got to
- 6:58Speaker 1: live with, you know, whether we've made the right decision
- 7:00Speaker 1: or not. But in this case, you've not done anything wrong.
- 7:04Speaker 1: You've parked your car the same as you would every day.
- 7:06Speaker 1: You've gone to bed and you've woken to that situation.
- 7:10Speaker 1: That is not fair.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's certainly as night. Oh really, I don't know.
- 7:16Speaker 2: You don't know what to do about it. That's my
- 7:18Speaker 2: that's my issue. I haven't been in the territory long.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I've been here eighteen months. I don't have that network
- 7:23Speaker 2: of people around me that I can call on to say,
- 7:26Speaker 2: do you know this? Or do you can you help
- 7:28Speaker 2: me with that?
- 7:28Speaker 1: I mean, is there anything Look, you know we've obviously
- 7:31Speaker 1: got a big network of people. Is there anything that
- 7:33Speaker 1: you know that our listeners could do to help in
- 7:36Speaker 1: any way?
- 7:38Speaker 2: I really don't know. I don't know what to do.
- 7:40Speaker 2: This is my half of the problem. I'm a little
- 7:42Speaker 2: bit and I'm not really sure. I've got a toe
- 7:46Speaker 2: for my car, but I just need to be able
- 7:47Speaker 2: to get it to a crash repair. Because the crash
- 7:51Speaker 2: repairs the places are just so booked out. I've fined
- 7:55Speaker 2: one and they said they booked out until October. Oh wow,
- 8:00Speaker 2: out until August because there's so many stolen cars. So
- 8:04Speaker 2: you know, it's gee, that's hard. I'll figure it out somehow.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Well, Look, if we if anyone contacts us, it's able
- 8:11Speaker 1: to help in any way. There are lots of people
- 8:13Speaker 1: that are suggesting victims of crime. I mean, if you've
- 8:16Speaker 1: I'm assuming you've reached out to them.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I have. Unfortunately they can't do a lot. They're very
- 8:21Speaker 2: generously offered to pay for the towing, which is a
- 8:25Speaker 2: really generous offer that sort of takes a load off
- 8:27Speaker 2: my mind. But I'd be grateful for just any advice
- 8:30Speaker 2: even on what to do and how to proceed forward,
- 8:33Speaker 2: because I just don't know what to do. It's not
- 8:36Speaker 2: something within the both of my experience. Now I'm really
- 8:40Speaker 2: struggling to comprehend what to do next.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Let us see whether we can help in some way.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You know, obviously I don't know what we may or
- 8:50Speaker 1: may not be able to find out, but let us
- 8:51Speaker 1: see what we can do in some way. I you know,
- 8:54Speaker 1: I always think, at least, you know, we've put it
- 8:57Speaker 1: out out there now, and let's see where we go
- 9:00Speaker 1: from here.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I'm very grateful, thank you so much for the opportunity
- 9:04Speaker 2: to tell the story.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Yeah, no problem at all. Look, I think that it's
- 9:08Speaker 1: something that we need to continue to talk about because
- 9:10Speaker 1: even though sometimes it feels like we're not being listened
- 9:12Speaker 1: to by our politicians and by our decision makers. It
- 9:16Speaker 1: is incredibly important that everybody knows what's going on in
- 9:20Speaker 1: the Northern Territory. But also you know that we share
- 9:22Speaker 1: those experiences with each other so that we don't feel
- 9:25Speaker 1: like we're alone.
- 9:26Speaker 2: That's right, and we don't feel like we're just another number.
- 9:29Speaker 2: And that's what it feels like in my position. You
- 9:31Speaker 2: feel like you're just another kick on a sheet that
- 9:35Speaker 2: you know, yep, that car has been stolen, and yes,
- 9:38Speaker 2: this is what we do, and take a number and
- 9:40Speaker 2: jump at the end of the line. Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Deb Thank you so much for having a chat with
- 9:45Speaker 1: me this morning, and I'm really sorry about that situation
- 9:48Speaker 1: that you are going through. We'll let you know if
- 9:51Speaker 1: you know if we can help in any way.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Thank you, Katie, I really appreciate it.
- 9:56Speaker 1: No worries at all. Thanks Dev
