- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his Word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we're in Psalm 149.
- 0:19We are in the second to last of the Psalms and I am so excited.
- 0:25What a journey that it has been together and we have been in the
- 0:31book 5 of Psalms for a long time now.
- 0:36I think it's probably been 5 or 6 months at this point.
- 0:40And so I'm excited for the next chapter of what will we, what we
- 0:45will be doing in Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:48And we're going to be going back to the New Testament for a
- 0:50little bit. We're going to do something
- 0:51there. I am still praying over and
- 0:54thinking over what that will be. And then once we complete that
- 0:59in the New Testament, I know we'll be heading back over to
- 1:02the Old Testament, likely Isaiah.
- 1:06I think Isaiah is a tremendous book of Scripture.
- 1:11So much of the New Testament, and especially so much of
- 1:14Jesus's ministry is built on what Isaiah spoke from the Lord.
- 1:22And there are so many prophecies about Jesus within the book of
- 1:28Isaiah. And so I think that's where
- 1:30we're going to be headed after we do our next portion in the
- 1:33New Testament. But I like being able to give
- 1:35some variety of doing some of the old, some of the new.
- 1:39And I want to make sure that we are learning all of God's Word,
- 1:42not just the portions that are most familiar to us or that we
- 1:47maybe quote UN quote, enjoy the most.
- 1:51But today we are in Psalm 149. So let's read through this and
- 1:55see what God has for us today. Hallelujah.
- 1:59Sing to Yahweh a new song, His praise in the assembly of the
- 2:04faithful. Let Israel celebrate its maker.
- 2:07Let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.
- 2:10Let them praise His name with dancing and make music to Him
- 2:14with tambourine and lyre. For Yahweh takes pleasure in His
- 2:18people. He adorns the humble with
- 2:20salvation. Let the faithful celebrate in
- 2:23triumphal glory. Let them shout for joy on their
- 2:26beds. Let the exaltation of God be in
- 2:30their mouths and a double edged sword in their hands, inflicting
- 2:33vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples,
- 2:37binding their kings with chains and their dignitaries with iron
- 2:41shackles, carrying out the judgment decreed against them.
- 2:44This honor is for all His faithful people.
- 2:48Hallelujah. All right, if you're like me,
- 2:51you're reading through and at one point it's verse number six.
- 2:56You go wait a second. This just took a giant turn.
- 2:58What in the world are we supposed to make of this?
- 3:01So let's walk through this together and see, see what we
- 3:05are and what we are not supposed to do today.
- 3:08So verse #1 Hallelujah, sing to Yahweh a new song, His praise in
- 3:13the assembly of the faithful, that we are to be singing new
- 3:18songs to God as God continues to be faithful to us.
- 3:22So if God has given us new reasons to praise day by day
- 3:27that he got me through 2025, He got me through January of 2026,
- 3:32He got me through the day before I recorded this Sunday, February
- 3:378th, 2026, I have new reasons to praise the Lord.
- 3:42God has been faithful to me in new ways that I've never before
- 3:46experienced, him getting me through all of those things in
- 3:51the way that he has. And so I ought to praise him a
- 3:55new for the new morning mercies that he has given.
- 3:59And I want you to consider that God's not just operating back
- 4:07here in Bible times. He's not just given the final
- 4:12word with Jesus's crucifixion and burial and resurrection and
- 4:18ascension. He's not done with.
- 4:20When the Bible was created, he's not done with, you know, maybe
- 4:24the revivals that we would hear about the Great Awakening, both
- 4:27the 1st and 2nd and the, you know, Billy Sunday and, and
- 4:32Billy Graham crusades and things of the last century.
- 4:35Like God is still working and every single day he is doing new
- 4:40good things for you and for me. He's giving us encouragement.
- 4:43He is giving us guidance from his word.
- 4:46He's giving us new conversations with people that we can have,
- 4:50that we can experience his goodness.
- 4:53We can experience like his truth flowing through us to someone
- 4:56else. There are just 1000 different
- 4:59ways in which our God is newly good to us, so let's praise Him.
- 5:05It's why I love whenever you know, Christian music artists,
- 5:09whenever they release a new recording, I love being able to
- 5:13listen through it. There's one song that I was
- 5:15listening to recently from Elevation Worship.
- 5:19I believe the song's title is So Be It.
- 5:22It's kind of the the word we would use.
- 5:25Amen. May it be so.
- 5:27And so they have just a a song of great confidence and
- 5:31gratitude for God that when God speaks, it occurs and he is the
- 5:36one that is triumphant over the grave.
- 5:39He is triumphant over my sin and my weakness.
- 5:42He has declared my salvation. And so we can echo that prayer.
- 5:46So be it God. I think the course of it goes.
- 5:50The Lamb of God has overcome my testimony is his blood.
- 5:54And if he says that it is done, it is done, so be it God.
- 5:58And I just think God is so worthy of every praise and new
- 6:03praise that we can bring him. But then that praise isn't just
- 6:06supposed to be in your own private individual heart.
- 6:10That is absolutely where it should start.
- 6:13Like there should be personal praise to God within you.
- 6:16Now you might not write a new song, but you can say thank you,
- 6:19the Lord. You can express gratitude from
- 6:21him. You can join in in your heart,
- 6:25in the praise, in the new praise that others are singing and
- 6:29writing about. You don't have to be a composer
- 6:33all on your own, but that praise, that gratitude that we
- 6:38are called to have individually and personally from the heart,
- 6:41is then supposed to spill out into the larger assembly of
- 6:46God's people. He says his praise in the
- 6:49assembly of the faithful. Are you part?
- 6:53Are you a participant or an observer in the corporate
- 6:58worship of the Saints? Now, you might not be involved
- 7:01in the same way as everyone else is.
- 7:03I know some people. They're perhaps like good
- 7:06singers. But if you ask them to do, you
- 7:09know, a dance or something rhythmic or to clap on beat,
- 7:14they might not be able to do that very well.
- 7:17That's all right. God has 1000 different ways in
- 7:20which we are called to participate.
- 7:22We can raise our hands, we can clap, we can sing, we can dance,
- 7:26we can play an instrument, all these things that we would even
- 7:29read in the upcoming verses. But God wants you to do
- 7:32something in the praise and worship of Him.
- 7:36I have led music for many years. One of the saddest things that
- 7:42occurs in in the time of worshipping through music is
- 7:48when you have someone that just especially with a scowl on their
- 7:52face is not singing. They are not, you know, they're
- 7:56not doing anything in worship with their hands or their arms
- 8:02or their body. Like it's just scowl time and
- 8:07they're just, you know, shutting up.
- 8:09And what makes it really sad often times is it's people that
- 8:12have a lot of opinions and they run their mouths about a lot of
- 8:16different things in life. And they, it, it can be hard
- 8:20sometimes to get such a person to be silent other than when it
- 8:25is time to praise the Lord. And I, I want to encourage every
- 8:30person that is watching. I want to encourage you maybe if
- 8:34you've got a, you've got a spouse or you have a loved one,
- 8:37a friend that maybe they've got kind of just that very stoic, Oh
- 8:41yeah, I'm not going to do anything.
- 8:42Encourage them God is worthy of our praise, so find some way to
- 8:48praise him even if all you can praise him with his mouth in the
- 8:51words and and having you know some modicum of joy or happiness
- 8:56or a smile on your face. It sometimes the appropriate
- 8:59response is you've got a tear coming down your face.
- 9:03For some people, like great a tear is worship to the Lord,
- 9:08that you are responding to God as a result of what you know to
- 9:15be true about Him. It doesn't matter what the
- 9:18response is, but have some sort of response.
- 9:21I promise you are not being held at gunpoint and and told to
- 9:26worship the Lord. We are forgiven and redeemed and
- 9:30restored and adopted and given purpose and mission.
- 9:33We are indwelt by the Holy Spirit.
- 9:35We have every reason to praise the Lord.
- 9:39And so I want to encourage you in that when it comes time for a
- 9:43corporate praise, may we praise all together.
- 9:46May we praise excitedly because it is good to praise.
- 9:50Verse #2 Let Israel celebrate its maker, that the children of
- 9:54Zion rejoice in their king. God made you, so He's worthy of
- 9:58your praise. God is your king, He is your
- 10:00ruler, so He is worthy of your adoration, of your rejoicing.
- 10:04You can be happy that you have God as your king because He is a
- 10:07good king. He does what is right, He
- 10:09provides for you, and so you ought to rejoice in your king.
- 10:14Verse #3 Let them praise His name with dancing and make music
- 10:18to him with tambourine and lyre. If You Can Dance, dance for the
- 10:23Lord. If you can play an instrument,
- 10:26play an instrument for the Lord, there can be 1000 different, you
- 10:30know, kind of good venues to be able to dance or to play.
- 10:35I can think, you know, any weddings that you have.
- 10:38That is a common occurrence throughout all of human history.
- 10:43Like when it's time for this rejoicing, it's something that
- 10:46you play music to you, you dance together.
- 10:49And you can look even today at some of the wedding festivities
- 10:53that happened during like Jewish weddings, where it is exciting,
- 10:57It's joy filled. You have kind of the, the, the
- 11:01corporate dancing that is done together.
- 11:04It reminds me kind of my only connection with something like
- 11:09that would be in the Prince of Egypt movies where you have
- 11:13Moses and as he's become part of this larger family of Jethro and
- 11:20the, the glad rejoicing and dancing that occurs there.
- 11:23And Moses is kind of, you know, shaken along by it.
- 11:27And it's, it's just a joy. And so there are many, many
- 11:31venues in which dancing and singing and playing instruments
- 11:37is appropriate and good, but none more so than the House of
- 11:43God. The House of God is the place
- 11:45where all of our greatest joys and excitement occurs.
- 11:50And so it is in those moments that we need to be focused on
- 11:56the Lord. Again, we don't we don't do
- 11:59anything We do to, if you will bring attention to ourselves.
- 12:04But if God is doing something, if God has done something for
- 12:07you and he has, and if God is doing something in you and he
- 12:11is, if you are still breathing, then there ought to be a
- 12:15response of joy and worship and adoration and excitement about
- 12:21what God is doing. Verse #4 For Yahweh takes
- 12:24pleasure in his people. He adorns the humble with
- 12:28salvation. What he thought that this is
- 12:31God's not begrudging that we are his.
- 12:35Instead, he takes pleasure in his people.
- 12:38When I look at my kids, when I look at my wife, I am filled
- 12:43with joy. I'm filled with happiness.
- 12:46I go man, like God. Thank you for giving me these
- 12:49wonderful people. Thank you for the joy that they
- 12:51bring into my life. Thank you that they are not me.
- 12:55They're not exactly like me and praise the Lord for that, but
- 12:59their uniqueness is something that I'm able to rejoice in and
- 13:04hear Yahweh in such a greater way.
- 13:07He takes pleasure in His people. That is His default view of you.
- 13:15By the way, I've mentioned the book on here before many times,
- 13:20Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortland, and in it he quotes an
- 13:25older Puritan author from the 15 or 16 hundreds who goes at
- 13:31length to through Scripture to show us that God's like anger,
- 13:37his vengeance, his wrath against sin.
- 13:42That is his peculiar work. It is something that he does in
- 13:46his righteousness, but it is not his normal mode of operation.
- 13:50His normal mode of operation is mercy and joy and love.
- 13:56And so when God needs to be just, he will absolutely do
- 13:59that. But he is not, He is not framed
- 14:03himself first and foremost as the God of justice.
- 14:07He has framed himself first and foremost as the Lord, gracious
- 14:12and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love.
- 14:17Like that's God's description of himself that he gives to Moses
- 14:21in the passage in Exodus. That is then one of the most
- 14:24quoted portions of Scripture in all of the Old Testament.
- 14:29So God's default mode towards you, his default opinion of you
- 14:33is you are my child, I love you, I take pleasure in you.
- 14:37I am happy that you are mine. And when it comes, you know,
- 14:41time sometimes for God to judge us, for him to chasten us, for
- 14:45him to kind of, if you will bring the hammer down when he
- 14:48has to ground us, He will do it, but He does it out of love for
- 14:53us. And what a joy that that is
- 14:56God's. God's not perpetually angry with
- 15:00you. And in times when you have it
- 15:01all together, he's finally like, OK, I can, I can tolerate them
- 15:05now. No, God is amazingly in love
- 15:12with you, so much so that He gave His own life to die for you
- 15:20who there is. There is no one in my life that
- 15:24has ever had to thankfully make the choice between choosing to
- 15:28lay ever dying on my behalf. But my God did that for me.
- 15:33And this inexpressible love is something that I can rejoice in.
- 15:39And if my God takes pleasure in me, may I take pleasure in my
- 15:43God in following in His way and learning more about Him and
- 15:47experiencing His presence, His Holy Spirit day by day.
- 15:51I love it. The end of verse four.
- 15:52He adorns the humble with salvation.
- 15:54Those that are lowly, those that everyone else might have
- 15:57forgotten, God does not forget them.
- 16:00And He, if you will, adorns. He crowns them.
- 16:03He clothes them with His salvation, with His rescue.
- 16:06Verse 5, Let the faithful celebrate in triumphal glory.
- 16:11Let them shout for joy on their beds.
- 16:14We can be excited about what God does, about what he is doing.
- 16:18I love this phrase. You know, let them shout for joy
- 16:21on their beds. That you can wake up and you go
- 16:23back, Man, God is awesome. Or you can lay your head on your
- 16:27pillow at night and go. God, thank you for getting me
- 16:29through another day. That there can be from sunup to
- 16:32sundown, from waking up till going to sleep.
- 16:36You can be thankful and you can shout for joy to your God.
- 16:40All right, so then verses 6 through 9, what the world it was
- 16:43it talking about there at the end, let the exaltation of God
- 16:46be in their mouths. So here there's praising God
- 16:49even when you're going to sleep and a double edged sword in
- 16:53their hands, inflecting vengeance on the nations and
- 16:57punishment on the peoples binding their kings with chains
- 17:00and their dignitaries with iron shackles carrying out the
- 17:04decree, the judgement decreed against them.
- 17:07All right, well, it seems like we turned a massive we we made a
- 17:12big turn somewhere where we were going from like salvation, God's
- 17:16love, all of that into judgement being executed on the nation's
- 17:21number one. We need to remember this was
- 17:24during a specific point in redemptive history in which if
- 17:28Israel there as a nation, if it does not continue to exist, the
- 17:35Messiah would not come into the world.
- 17:38If Israel there is eradicated, the Messiah does not come
- 17:43through the lineage of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah and David.
- 17:50And so it was of utmost importance for these people to
- 17:55live and to survive in unbroken, if you will, genetic line that
- 18:01this was something that was necessary.
- 18:03Here. The enemies that Israel had was
- 18:07primarily Satan and the demons. But then Satan would often use
- 18:11the other nations in order to attack and to try and harm
- 18:16Israel. And so here for people that
- 18:18were, that were consistently attacking, betraying, harming,
- 18:24bringing in troops to steal things from the nation, there is
- 18:30a if you will, there is this prayer over those that would
- 18:35defend Israel that they would say, God, we need your victory
- 18:41in the battle. So as we think about how you are
- 18:43worthy of praise, as we think about the fact that you love us,
- 18:46that you care for us, we believe that you will protect us as we
- 18:50go into the fight. And not just that we will
- 18:53survive, but that we will win here, that there will be this
- 18:57punishment on the surrounding nations, that these that had at
- 19:04one point chained Israel, that had enslaved people, they would
- 19:08find that coming back onto them. And as we think about this now
- 19:15as the people of God, that we are a holy nation, we remember
- 19:20the Church of Jesus Christ has a double edged sword.
- 19:24But it's not a literal sword. It's the word of God.
- 19:28And we read about that in Hebrews 4, that the word of God
- 19:31is alive. It's living and powerful and
- 19:34sharper than any 2 edged sword. And so we fight our battles not
- 19:39with a Glock or with an AR15. That's not the kind of battles
- 19:45that we fight as the church. Instead, we fight using the word
- 19:50of God to say this is what God says.
- 19:52And so this is what we must do. And if someone, you know, if
- 19:56someone wants to kill us, especially for our faith in
- 20:00Jesus, our faith in Jesus in particular, I I will say.
- 20:05Then we can have the same mindset that Jesus did, the same
- 20:08mindset that Paul had, the same mindset that Peter had after
- 20:12Jesus told him to put away his sword.
- 20:15We can have the same mindset as the last 2000 years of Christian
- 20:19martyrs, that if one wants to kill us for our faith, we do not
- 20:25battle against them, but we recognize we die.
- 20:28We're instantly with Jesus, We're good, but our deaths could
- 20:34lead to someone else accepting the Lord.
- 20:38You can see that even in Stevens stoning that Paul is there
- 20:42consenting to his death. But then later God used Paul's
- 20:49conscience and the fact that he had been so like moved and
- 20:52grieved through what had happened that Jesus describes
- 20:54Paul is like, Hey, you're you're fighting against the goat
- 20:57against the, you know, kind of like ox prick thing that keeps
- 21:01pointing you towards Jesus and you keep ignoring it.
- 21:04And Paul get saved as a result in in part due to the stoning of
- 21:10Steven that takes place. And so we don't fight with a
- 21:15sword. We don't fight with gun for the
- 21:19Kingdom of God, we fight with the word of God is the way that
- 21:25we battle. And we can think of that coming
- 21:29day when Jesus returns as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and
- 21:34he will execute perfect justice on the nation's that everyone
- 21:38will get the exact right and righteous condemnation for what
- 21:45they have done. And on that day, we will be
- 21:48amazed at God's like justice and his perfection of his ability to
- 21:53exact vengeance in a way that is good and right and perfect and
- 21:58holy. And so I don't want you to walk
- 22:01away from this Psalm going, all right, cool.
- 22:03I'm going to go, I'm going to go fight some person.
- 22:07I'm going to go fight some kings and dignitaries.
- 22:10Don't do that. Instead, realize Jesus is the
- 22:13one that is the ultimate fulfillment of all of Scripture.
- 22:16And may we praise, may we adore our God, may we worship and obey
- 22:21him. And then may we go out to
- 22:24battle, if you will, not against flesh and blood, but against the
- 22:27demons and principalities and powers, the spiritual beings in
- 22:31opposition to God. May we go out armed with the
- 22:34Word of God and with the armor of God on us.
- 22:37And may we seek to win people to team Jesus.
- 22:42May we have more and more our attention focused on bringing
- 22:48people into the Kingdom of the Lord, not on building our own,
- 22:53you know, kingdoms of man. Well, no, it was a little bit
- 22:57longer episode today, but thank you for tuning in tomorrow, last
- 23:01episode of book 5 of Psalms and all of Psalms will be complete.
- 23:06Looking forward to it. See you next episode.
