- 0:57Hello and welcome to another episode of the Arise Women of God Podcast.
- 1:02I'm your host, Tamara K.
- 1:03Anderson.
- 1:04And joining me today is Amanda Powell of our Women warriors of Light Advisory board and expert goal setter.
- 1:12And we're getting tactical with our testimony today.
- 1:15First, we'll break down the smart acronym through the lens of faith.
- 1:20Second, we'll discuss progress monitoring and how to know if you're on target within just three weeks.
- 1:28And finally, we'll share.
- 1:30Why measure the gain and not the gap is the only way to sustain momentum.
- 1:37But first, let's kick it off with Amanda defining smart goals.
- 1:42A goal has got to be smart, and that's an acronym telling you all of the pieces that you need in a goal, which is so important.
- 1:50Specific, specific, specific meaning.
- 1:53You're going to start your goal with I will what?
- 1:57I will what are you filling in the blank?
- 1:59Right.
- 2:00So I will write a book.
- 2:02Okay, you want to write a book.
- 2:03Well, you're going to break that down.
- 2:04So I will write a book by when, okay?
- 2:09When and what type of book?
- 2:10Like, start getting super specific.
- 2:12It's got to be measurable.
- 2:14The only way that it's going to be measurable is you're moving steps towards it, right?
- 2:19So the way that I like to do this is let's say that I'm doing.
- 2:22Let's say I'm doing a reading goal, okay?
- 2:24And it's going to be for one of my kids, okay?
- 2:26My child is going to read 100 words per minute with 90% accuracy.
- 2:33That's my measurable part, that accuracy.
- 2:35So you see what I'm doing?
- 2:36That's the goal.
- 2:37This is how I'm measuring it, okay?
- 2:40With it, with the 90% accuracy with less than one prompt.
- 2:47And then I'm going to add a date by.
- 2:50And I add a date, okay?
- 2:51So if this is a year ago, there's my date, okay?
- 2:54So you can see the important parts.
- 2:55And this works for anything.
- 2:56I will what?
- 2:58Get specific.
- 2:59Okay.
- 3:00It's got to be measurable 90 accuracy.
- 3:02Okay.
- 3:03So I'm gonna write a book and I'm going to write one hour a day.
- 3:07That's your measurable part.
- 3:08One hour a day.
- 3:09Okay.
- 3:10Or maybe you put word count.
- 3:12I am going to put down 200 words on a page.
- 3:15Okay.
- 3:15That's your something measurable.
- 3:17Okay.
- 3:18And then make sure it's realistic.
- 3:20Okay.
- 3:20You can't say, I'm going to write a series like I've never written a book.
- 3:25So an unrealistic goal for me would be, I'm going to write a novel series and I'm going to have three books written in a year.
- 3:32Right.
- 3:33I know nothing about writing, nothing about writing.
- 3:37Like, even when I write something or I tell or I tell Siri something, right.
- 3:43She usually always gets it wrong because I'm not the greatest.
- 3:46Like it's going to take me a while if I wanted to write a series that's not realistic.
- 3:50So make it realistic, something that you really can achieve or you're going to get really, really down on yourself.
- 3:57Like, this is not going to be a fun process for you.
- 3:59And then time bound, it has to have a time that it ends.
- 4:03I love it.
- 4:05Specific and realistic.
- 4:07If we set a goal to write a trilogy in a year when we've never written a single page, we aren't being faithful, we are being unrealistic.
- 4:17But once you have a realistic goal, you have to break it down into quarterly objectives.
- 4:24To Amanda, she calls this reverse engineering.
- 4:28Goals do not have to be written in stone.
- 4:30Okay.
- 4:31Know that you may start out with a goal and life may throw you a curveball and that goal may need to be adjusted.
- 4:37That's the beautiful part of progress monitoring your goals.
- 4:41So when I'm telling you objectives, that's what I'm talking about.
- 4:44So here we have this big goal, okay.
- 4:46I said my child was going to read, say 100 words a minute with 90 accuracy, okay.
- 4:51And this is going to be in a year from today.
- 4:53Okay.
- 4:54So my first objective, I'm going to break that down into quarterly objectives.
- 4:59So my first quarter, let's say the baseline is my, my kid is reading 20 words a minute and I want them to 100.
- 5:05Okay?
- 5:06I'm going to reverse engineer that and I'm going to work on, we're going to get you from 20 words.
- 5:11And this first objective, I need you reading, I need that doubled.
- 5:15I need you reading 40 words.
- 5:17Okay?
- 5:18We're going to read 40 words by the end of this quarter with Maybe it's not 90% accuracy, maybe it's a little lower now because I like high goals, I'm probably going to keep it 90% because I brought the
- 5:29word count down right?
- 5:31So I want those, those 40 words that we get.
- 5:33I want those 90% correct.
- 5:36Okay.
- 5:37The beautiful part about the objectives is within three or four weeks, you know, if you're on target to make that objective and if I'm not, I can course correct.
- 5:48That three week check in is a game changer.
- 5:51It gives you permission to be flexible.
- 5:54Doesn't that sound nice to have a little wiggle room?
- 5:57Remember, your goals are not written in stone.
- 6:01They are written in partnership with a God who knows when to speed up and when you need to hunker down.
- 6:08This is where we have to choose to measure the gain and not the gap.
- 6:13And I, I love that you're giving ourselves permission to have grace because things are going to come up.
- 6:20In the middle of last year, in the middle of crazy goals, I got sick for like two weeks.
- 6:27Like I was in bed flat on my back.
- 6:29I had some flu bug come through.
- 6:32And you better believe that it shut down my goals pretty fast.
- 6:36Like, I wasn't able to exercise.
- 6:38I was barely making it out of the bed, into the kitchen, grabbing some food and getting back in bed.
- 6:44So sometimes goals fail because things out of our control happen.
- 6:50And so just remember, give yourself a little bit of grace there.
- 6:53Hey, this happened.
- 6:54I couldn't control it.
- 6:56Believe me, I did not want to be sick.
- 6:58So just as you ease back into health, maybe you're going to have to start at a lower measuring point because I'm not going to go from that to walking my 45 minutes a day.
- 7:11In fact, I remember my friends walking with me the first time I walked after that and what used to take me a 20 minute loop, it took me like 30 minutes.
- 7:20I was walking slow and I was just huffing and puffing because I was recovering.
- 7:26So allow for flexibility and say, you know what?
- 7:30I used to have this goal.
- 7:31It's going to have to change from what it was to where I am right this minute.
- 7:36And that's okay.
- 7:38Don't get down on yourself.
- 7:40One of my favorite sayings with goals is measure the gain and not the gap.
- 7:45The gap, yeah.
- 7:46And so make sure that you are saying, guess what?
- 7:50Last week I didn't walk at all because I was sick.
- 7:53This week I'm gonna walk 10 minutes and see how I do with that.
- 7:57That might be a stretch for me.
- 7:59I don't know, but start with easing yourself back into it.
- 8:04Was it what you did two months ago?
- 8:05No.
- 8:05It's okay.
- 8:06It's okay.
- 8:07So, giving ourselves grace so that we don't completely fail with our goals.
- 8:13The purpose of a smart goal isn't to make you work harder.
- 8:17It's to help you see how much God is doing in your life.
- 8:22When you make it plain, you see the miracles.
- 8:26If you're ready to reverse engineer your big vision, go download our guide to goal setting for Christian Women.
- 8:32It'll help you figure out what God wants you to do, and then you can break it down into your smart goals, which you have just learned to do.
- 8:41And if you want to join a community of women who are measuring the gain together, go check out our Women warriors of Light accountability group.
- 8:50The links for both of these things are in the description.
- 8:53So, my friends, take one purposeful step today and move towards your goal.
- 8:59And until next time, may you arise.
- 9:02Do it God's way, God strong.
