- 0:00Hey, I'm Lisa Chastain and This is Money Mindset Unfiltered,
- 0:03where we strip the shame out of personal finance management and
- 0:06build something better. Today I'm talking about the
- 0:08hustle lie and why it's the most expensive advice you've ever
- 0:11followed. For the last decade, we've been
- 0:13told the same thing over and over again.
- 0:15Work harder, sleepless, sacrifice more.
- 0:18And if your financial life isn't working still, you just didn't
- 0:21hustle hard enough. But when we actually look at the
- 0:24data and the lived reality of women, that story starts to fall
- 0:27apart. And we're going to separate it
- 0:28out and we're going to talk about about it today on this
- 0:31episode. Let's start with the philosophy
- 0:33itself. Gary Vee has built a massive
- 0:35platform telling people things like you should be working 18
- 0:38hours a day. Sleep is for when you're dead.
- 0:40And if you're not hustling, you have no right to complain.
- 0:43I understand why that message spreads.
- 0:45For me as a blue collar girl, those are things my dad said to
- 0:48me. I understand why that message
- 0:50spreads. It sounds empowering.
- 0:52It sounds like agency. It sounds like go get em.
- 0:55And it suggests that success is completely within our control.
- 0:58If we work harder, we will earn more and we will build a better
- 1:01life. But the question that nobody
- 1:03asks is who does this advice actually work for?
- 1:06Not moms. And most of the time, not women.
- 1:10Because when you look closely, hustle culture tends to work
- 1:12best for people who already have structural safety Nets.
- 1:16Let me explain. It works for someone learning
- 1:18entrepreneurship inside a family business already doing millions
- 1:21in revenue like Gary Vee. It works for someone who's
- 1:24sacrificed. Doesn't mean that their kids
- 1:26grow up without a present parent.
- 1:28And often it works for people whose lives are supported by
- 1:31invisible labor behind the scenes.
- 1:33Women. The data tells a very different
- 1:36story for women. According to the US Bureau of
- 1:39Labor Statistics, women perform roughly twice the unpaid labor
- 1:43that men do. Childcare, household management,
- 1:46emotional labor, family logistics.
- 1:48Which means when hustle culture tells women to work harder, it's
- 1:52telling women who already have two shifts or three shifts, you
- 1:55know who you are, to simply absorb more.
- 1:58And the cost is showing up according to Bank rate in 2024,
- 2:01the study found that 75% of women report financial burnout.
- 2:06Three out of four women are already burned out, compared to
- 2:1057% of men. The grind isn't fixing financial
- 2:13stress, it's making it worse. And when women participate in
- 2:17the hustle economy, the gap continues.
- 2:19Research from Hughes shows women running side hustles earn about
- 2:2230% less per hour than men doing the same work.
- 2:26No shocker there. So the hustle culture creates a
- 2:29trap. Women are already hustling more
- 2:32than the system recognizes. And the solution we keep hearing
- 2:35is hustle harder. I don't know about you, but I'm
- 2:38over it. I'm done with it.
- 2:40No more hustle culture, no more no thank you.
- 2:43There's got to be a better way, and we're going to talk about
- 2:46that in a little bit. Here's the part of the
- 2:47conversation that almost never gets said out loud.
- 2:50Hustle culture was largely designed by men with structural
- 2:53safety Nets and marketed as universal advice.
- 2:56Gary. These stories often framed as
- 2:58pure immigrant work ethic. And yes, the work ethic is real
- 3:02ICU Gary, but context matters. Gary learned entrepreneurship
- 3:07inside his father's wine business, which was already
- 3:10generating millions of dollars in revenue.
- 3:12That's not a bootstrap story, you guys.
- 3:15That's a launchpad. The entire hustle narrative
- 3:18assumes something else is happening in the background and
- 3:21that someone else is handling the rest of life, the house, the
- 3:24kids, the emotional labor, the daily logistics of living.
- 3:28For many men operating inside traditional structures, that
- 3:32someone is a spouse. For women, there is no one else.
- 3:35So the math changes if you work 18 hours a day and you're
- 3:38responsible for childcare, meals, household management and
- 3:42emotional labor. You're not working 18 hours,
- 3:44you're working 24, and half of that is unpaid labor.
- 3:48When Gary says sacrifice everything, he's usually talking
- 3:51about sacrificing free time. Well, that's great if you're 18
- 3:54and going to college, but when women sacrifice everything,
- 3:58they're sacrificing our health, relationships, children's
- 4:01stability and often financial security.
- 4:03You guys, that's not a strategy. That's a crisis.
- 4:06And there's another piece of context that almost never gets
- 4:09acknowledged when hustle advice spreads online.
- 4:12Many of the most visible hustle voices today are operating
- 4:15inside live, structured for extreme work output.
- 4:19Gary Vee, Cody Sanchez, Leila Harmozzi, Alex Harmozzi.
- 4:23The same thing you hear from them, different context in some
- 4:27ways, but they don't have kids. Many of them have made very
- 4:30intentional decisions to not have kids so that they can
- 4:33hustle their way to success and tell you to do the same.
- 4:37It just doesn't fit. It just doesn't fit.
- 4:40Layla's publicly said that she and Alex have chosen not to have
- 4:44children. Listen, that's not criticism,
- 4:45it's context. Extreme work output becomes much
- 4:49easier when your time is not divided by caregiving
- 4:51responsibilities. Advice about working 100 hour a
- 4:54week spread easily on in line. Even Grant Cardone himself said
- 4:58he waited until 50 to have kids. Why?
- 5:01Because he was hustling his way to success.
- 5:03Now, if that's for you, maybe this video isn't for you.
- 5:06But for those of you who have been hitting your head against
- 5:09the wall over and over and over again trying to hustle harder
- 5:13and create more, this message is for you.
- 5:15Living inside a life that actually allows that schedule is
- 5:19so much harder when you have kids and other responsibilities
- 5:22financially. Also, hustle culture creates
- 5:25another trap. It pushes women toward low
- 5:27leverage income strategies. Listen to me here.
- 5:30Side hustles, gig work, constant activity.
- 5:34But revenue is not wealth. Working 18 hours a day at $15.00
- 5:39an hour does not build wealth. Negotiating your salary does.
- 5:43Owning assets does. Investing does.
- 5:46Resting enough to think clearly does.
- 5:49Right now, less than 10% of women owned businesses ever
- 5:52cross the $1 million in revenue. Only 10% of female owned
- 5:56businesses are making more than $250,000 a year.
- 6:00So while you're busy consuming hustle culture content online
- 6:04and they're making revenue off of you, the same time is that
- 6:09most women are not making even $100,000 in their business every
- 6:14single year. The hustle model isn't scaling
- 6:16women into wealth, it's burning us out before we get there.
- 6:20So if grinding harder isn't the answer, what is?
- 6:22This is where personal finance management gets real.
- 6:25And I mean actually real, not guru real.
- 6:28Real wealth comes from leverage. Leverage starts with something
- 6:32hustle culture never teaches, financial emotional
- 6:35intelligence. Money decisions are emotional
- 6:38before they're mathematical. When your nervous system is
- 6:41stuck in survival mode, you don't build wealth, you manage
- 6:44crisis. So here's the anti hustle
- 6:46financial framework that I teach my clients and I'd love for you
- 6:50to adapt. First, the energy audit.
- 6:52Gary Vee tells you to do an audit of your time, which as a
- 6:55coach I give to my clients. It's homework all of the time,
- 6:57but what I want you to do today is audit your energy.
- 7:01Where are you spending energy that produces nothing?
- 7:05Doom scrolling built about not doing enough.
- 7:07We're really good at that as women.
- 7:08Formative productivity. And now let's ask a better
- 7:11question. Where would that energy create
- 7:12the highest financial return? One focused salary negotiation
- 7:17can produce more money than six months of a side hustle.
- 7:20You don't need to work more hours.
- 7:23You need better at energy allocation.
- 7:25That's not laziness, that's strategy.
- 7:28You need more strategy, wealth producing strategy.
- 7:31Which leads me to #2 the wealth leverage principle.
- 7:34Take the math. Look at the math.
- 7:36One negotiated race, 5 to $15,000 per year, every year.
- 7:40Compounding. Side hustle earning $15.00 an
- 7:43hour, working 10-10 hours a week.
- 7:45That's $7800 per year. No leverage, no compounding,
- 7:49just more hours traded for dollars.
- 7:51Stop chasing cash flow. Let's look at something more
- 7:54simple. Investing $200 a month and a
- 7:57modest 7% return becomes roughly $96,000 in 20 years.
- 8:01The hustle gurus want you trading hours for dollars.
- 8:04Emotional wealth means building systems that work while you
- 8:07sleep, not working while you should be sleeping.
- 8:10Third, rest As a financial strategy, sleep deprivation cost
- 8:14the US economy $411 billion per year in lost productivity.
- 8:19Overwork creates decision fatigue, and decision fatigue
- 8:22leads to impulse spending, avoiding investments, missed
- 8:26bills, and financial avoidance. We just can't afford to be doing
- 8:30the hustle anymore. Rest is not the opposite of
- 8:34productivity. Rest is what makes high quality
- 8:37financial thinking possible. But hustle culture doesn't sell
- 8:40rest, and rest doesn't sell courses for the woman who feels
- 8:44trapped inside the hustle loop. If you're thinking I don't have
- 8:47a choice, I have to hustle, I hear you.
- 8:50Survival mode is real. But survival mode is not a
- 8:53financial strategy. Start here.
- 8:55Write down your three largest expenses.
- 8:58Not the lattes, the big ones, housing, transportation,
- 9:02insurance. Now ask one question.
- 9:05Is there one conversation I could have in the next 30 days
- 9:08that might reduce this by even $50?
- 9:11Not a job, not a negotiation. A phone call, a switch.
- 9:16Take that $50 and watch it grow. That's not hustling.
- 9:19That's leverage for the woman who's already burned herself out
- 9:23by chasing the grind. If you did the 18 hour days and
- 9:26you're exhausted wondering why your bank account doesn't match
- 9:28your sacrifice, You didn't fail, the system failed you.
- 9:34Here's your reset. Step one, Calculate your true
- 9:37hourly rate. This is mind blowing for clients
- 9:39that I work with. Total income divided by total
- 9:42hours worked, including unpaid labor.
- 9:45Step 2. Identify the single highest
- 9:48value activity in your life. Not the busiest, the one that
- 9:52actually creates opportunity. Step three.
- 9:55Protect 2 hours a day for that activity.
- 9:58And maybe it's just sleeping a little longer, longer because
- 10:00you feel better and more productive.
- 10:03Let the rest be imperfect. It's not laziness, it's
- 10:06precision. And it's so needed.
- 10:08So here's what I want you to take from this.
- 10:10You don't need a hustle harder. You don't need a hustle smarter.
- 10:13Or maybe we just need to stop using that word altogether.
- 10:16Because emotional wealth isn't grinding until you break.
- 10:20It's about building a financial life that actually lets you
- 10:23live. If this hits differently for
- 10:25you, drop a comment and tell me what's the hustle advice that
- 10:28burns you the worst? I read every single comment and
- 10:30I'll be there with specific next steps.
- 10:32And if you know a woman who's running herself into the ground
- 10:35following guru advice, send her this video.
- 10:37She deserves to know that there's another way.
- 10:40I'm Lisa Chastain. This is Money mindset,
- 10:42unfiltered. You deserve financial advice
- 10:44that doesn't require you to destroy yourself to follow it.
- 10:47I'll see you next time.
