- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz. Not
- 0:13Speaker 2: so fast, my friends. Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm
- 0:19Speaker 2: Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps.
- 0:20Speaker 3: We are in full playoff mode once again, ready to go.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Nine strong innings.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Yeah, four games today, starting in Chicago Southside with the
- 0:28Speaker 4: White Sox, ending late night with the Padres. Those guys
- 0:30Speaker 4: are out. We've got to go to a Padres game sometime.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Coming up later on today's show, P.J. Fleck of the
- 0:36Speaker 4: Minnesota Golden Gophers.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Love that. Oh, that's exciting. All right, let's start with
- 0:39Speaker 2: the Dodgers last night. Beat the Braves 3-1. Paul, I
- 0:43Speaker 2: hate to ask this because there are a lot of
- 0:44Speaker 2: teams alive.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Are the Dodgers inevitable right now?
- 0:48Speaker 2: Are they going to go for a three-peat or is
- 0:50Speaker 2: it still TBD?
- 0:51Speaker 4: I would say inevitable year to year. They always are
- 0:53Speaker 4: going to be in the playoffs, but last year they
- 0:55Speaker 4: came this close to losing the World Series. It does
- 0:57Speaker 4: feel like the odds are against you because they have
- 1:00Speaker 4: so many people who could beat you. Quique Hernandez doesn't
- 1:02Speaker 4: play all season and he hits a home run. Freddie Freeman,
- 1:05Speaker 4: there he goes right there. He's due for one. They
- 1:07Speaker 4: have so many guys. Mookie Betts can get hot. Otani's
- 1:10Speaker 4: not even playing that well. If he somehow gets healthy,
- 1:13Speaker 4: he's the best hitter in the game when he's healthy.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:14Speaker 3: They move Otani down in the lineup and it doesn't
- 1:17Speaker 3: really even kill them. It's interesting to me because all
- 1:19Speaker 3: these players have been there. I don't know what experience
- 1:22Speaker 3: means in baseball. But the Dodgers, it's not like their
- 1:25Speaker 3: Georgia football is right now where they're just rolling everyone.
- 1:27Speaker 3: They've been in must-win situations. They were down to the
- 1:31Speaker 3: blue year to year.
- 1:32Speaker 2: So I think that.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Experience is a big deal because it's not like they
- 1:35Speaker 3: can out-talent everyone. Their best player, Shohei, is not doing
- 1:38Speaker 3: anything for them, but their pitcher.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Well, I think the longer the series gets, the more
- 1:42Speaker 4: it works for them because the analytics, the odds would
- 1:44Speaker 4: say the talent's going to work out. I do want
- 1:46Speaker 4: to give Yamamoto the pitcher for the Dodgers credit. Last
- 1:49Speaker 4: year in the postseason, he had two complete games. Do
- 1:51Speaker 4: you know how many complete games in the postseason are
- 1:53Speaker 4: like an eclipse? Last night he went seven innings, ten strikeouts,
- 1:57Speaker 4: and I was watching the postgame coverage on MLB Network,
- 1:59Speaker 4: and they're like, do you know what seven innings by
- 2:01Speaker 4: a starter does for the rest of the team? It
- 2:04Speaker 4: allows the bullpen to get an extra day's rest. It
- 2:06Speaker 4: allows you to pull your next day pitcher earlier. And
- 2:10Speaker 4: he really is this complete wild card. He's a luxury
- 2:13Speaker 4: at him. He led the majors this year with one
- 2:16Speaker 4: complete game. One complete game led the majors. But he's also,
- 2:19Speaker 4: I don't understand him because he's 5'10, 175. He throws
- 2:21Speaker 4: in the mid to high 90s. Why can't more guys
- 2:25Speaker 4: do what this guy does?
- 2:26Speaker 2: Well, I mean, listen, easier said than done. He's a
- 2:30Speaker 2: total outlier.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Though, because everybody else is going the exact opposite direction,
- 2:33Speaker 3: where they're pitching guys less and their starters.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Don't go any innings. You know, I was arguing with
- 2:38Speaker 2: the guys in the back about this. They love this.
- 2:40Speaker 3: They love this, but Yamamoto is an exception. He is
- 2:43Speaker 3: not the rule. I think the trend is to go
- 2:45Speaker 3: to bullpen. That's why he's so unique.
- 2:47Speaker 4: But why can't a big power pitcher go seven, eight,
- 2:49Speaker 4: nine innings, but a guy who looks like an accountant...
- 2:52Speaker 4: who looks like Mariano Rivera or looks like Pedro Martinez
- 2:54Speaker 4: on the mound, not physically imposing, does not throw 103,
- 2:57Speaker 4: he could just cruise to innings 7 and 8.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Well, Pedro Martinez on the DP show said something interesting
- 3:03Speaker 3: the other day. He said it's not strength, it's flexibility.
- 3:06Speaker 3: He said flexibility is a big part of this.
- 3:08Speaker 4: So by being less jacked, you're more springy and loose.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I mean, there are very few gigantic, strong pitchers you
- 3:15Speaker 3: can last nine innings.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Listen, why do you think I didn't play high-level baseball?
- 3:20Speaker 2: He said that he's gone.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Among the reasons. Yeah, of course it is. Chris Sale,
- 3:23Speaker 4: seven hits, three earned runs, not the best outing by him.
- 3:27Speaker 4: He did fool Otani pretty good on our strike.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Well, I mean, listen, that wasn't so bad. It was
- 3:30Speaker 2: a 3-1 game.
- 3:32Speaker 3: The problem with the Braves is they're supposed to have
- 3:34Speaker 3: to win the Sale game because they don't really have
- 3:36Speaker 3: much else in their pitching rotation. But Sale is awesome, too.
- 3:40Speaker 3: There's another skinny guy who can just throw flames.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Now, he hasn't done great in the postseason. He's gotten
- 3:44Speaker 4: touched early in both games.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. By the way, and Freeman... How.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Many playoff games has Freddie Freeman played? I feel like
- 3:50Speaker 3: I've been watching him in the postseason since I was
- 3:52Speaker 3: a kid.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Yeah, and Freddie Freeman. Remember that whole tussle, was he
- 3:54Speaker 4: going to lead the Braves for the Dodgers? It almost,
- 3:56Speaker 4: you don't remember him as a Brave, even though he
- 3:58Speaker 4: had great years.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Well, I mean, back to the original question, though. There's
- 4:01Speaker 3: so many great series going on right now. I do
- 4:03Speaker 3: feel like the Dodgers championship to lose, you never know
- 4:06Speaker 3: what's going to happen.
- 4:07Speaker 2: At 1-1, I gave Atlanta a chance. Now, I don't know.
- 4:10Speaker 4: And weirdly, I like that Otani's not pitching. He's more
- 4:13Speaker 4: trying to get healthy for the run. And maybe he
- 4:15Speaker 4: gets healthier along the way. All right, let's get to it.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Padres versus Brewers, 4-3 Padres over the Brewers. Milwaukee is
- 4:21Speaker 4: still up 2-1 in the series. That was a great game.
- 4:23Speaker 4: It felt like an SEC football game from the first pitch.
- 4:25Speaker 3: No, it's like a 10th man for them. The crowd
- 4:28Speaker 3: is just so wild. And this series really seems to
- 4:31Speaker 3: be defined by the home field because Milwaukee's not great
- 4:33Speaker 3: on the road, and the Padres just were lifted by the.
- 4:37Speaker 2: San Diego crowd.
- 4:37Speaker 4: And they needed it.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Yeah, and the San Diego crowds are supposed to be
- 4:40Speaker 3: laid back. There was nothing laid back about this group.
- 4:43Speaker 4: And the Brewers got hits. The Brewers had 11 hits tonight.
- 4:45Speaker 4: But they left 11 on base. That's going to kill you.
- 4:47Speaker 4: The error right there puts another run in. And that
- 4:50Speaker 4: was big late in the game because their pitchers were
- 4:52Speaker 4: doing a good job. The big story in this game,
- 4:54Speaker 4: and we'll talk more about it later, is Mason Miller,
- 4:56Speaker 4: the ace, paternity leave. It breaks just an hour before
- 4:59Speaker 4: the game. I saw it on Twitter. I thought it
- 5:01Speaker 4: was a joke.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:02Speaker 4: I thought it was a hack. Did you think it
- 5:03Speaker 4: was real?
- 5:04Speaker 2: No.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I mean, I don't trust anything on the Internet anymore.
- 5:08Speaker 3: But that I.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Trusted because he's about the age to have kids. Man,
- 5:12Speaker 2: it's a tough call.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I mean, I don't want to put myself in his shoes.
- 5:15Speaker 2: We'll do this later.
- 5:16Speaker 4: In warm takes, we're going to flesh this one out.
- 5:18Speaker 4: What would you do if you're Mason Miller? But the
- 5:20Speaker 4: big news is Michael King, their ace, who doesn't get
- 5:23Speaker 4: half the national run that Mason Miller gets, he's a
- 5:26Speaker 4: fantastic player. He told his coach before the game, his
- 5:28Speaker 4: manager before the game, that I'm ready to go. He
- 5:31Speaker 4: pitched two scoreless, and Michael King is the breakout star.
- 5:34Speaker 4: if you can call a guy who's already an ace
- 5:36Speaker 4: a breakout star.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Well, a breakout star, except they have to win the series.
- 5:39Speaker 3: And by the way, I still think Milwaukee has a
- 5:41Speaker 3: gigantic advantage in this series.
- 5:43Speaker 2: So, yeah, he's a breakout star for now.
- 5:46Speaker 3: It just feels, I don't know why, it feels like
- 5:48Speaker 3: Milwaukee still has a big edge because they could have
- 5:51Speaker 3: won last night.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Yeah, elimination game again tonight, 6 o'clock Eastern with that battle.
- 5:55Speaker 4: But that's another game. I do want to talk about this.
- 5:57Speaker 4: The crowds at some of these games, the Brewers games,
- 6:00Speaker 4: the Padres games, they have a football feel, and they
- 6:03Speaker 4: do it early. Some places, no names. The fans ease
- 6:06Speaker 4: in or show up a little late in all sports,
- 6:08Speaker 4: in all games.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I mean, it's no mystery that Braves fans are not
- 6:11Speaker 3: really making a huge impact this postseason.
- 6:13Speaker 2: They're not even showing up. What do you expect White Sox? Obviously,
- 6:16Speaker 2: this is... They're not used to it. It feels like
- 6:20Speaker 2: that's going to be mayhem.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Not a lot of home playoff games for the White
- 6:22Speaker 4: Sox over the past decade, but they've got it on
- 6:25Speaker 4: a tee. They've won four in a row on the road.
- 6:27Speaker 4: They've got it coming their way today. I don't know
- 6:29Speaker 4: if the Pope's going to be there. I don't know
- 6:30Speaker 4: if President Obama's going to be there. They're all invited.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I have to bring back the stat from yesterday, the
- 6:36Speaker 2: last time they clinched at home. 05? Yeah, it was 06.
- 6:41Speaker 2: But 1906!
- 6:43Speaker 4: Not a lot of great days for that. NFL has
- 6:46Speaker 4: a couple days off, no MAAC football tonight, but we
- 6:48Speaker 4: did have some NFL news yesterday. Lane Johnson, you mentioned
- 6:51Speaker 4: this right before we exited the show yesterday, that Lane
- 6:54Speaker 4: Johnson was Not playing the other day because of mental illness,
- 6:58Speaker 4: personal issues. What was going on there?
- 7:00Speaker 3: Well, he jumped out of the game at the last
- 7:03Speaker 3: minute for personal reasons.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Last weekend.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and Brandon Graham, former Eagle great, said that he
- 7:08Speaker 3: heard that Lane Johnson was going to retire. Now, Lane
- 7:10Speaker 3: Johnson announced this summer this would be his last season.
- 7:13Speaker 3: He has apparently a lot going on. There's reports about
- 7:16Speaker 3: his parents are aging, and he has talked about mental
- 7:19Speaker 3: health a lot in his career. Plus, he's an older player,
- 7:21Speaker 3: a lot of wear and tear. You know, tush pushing
- 7:24Speaker 3: is not easy on anyone. And he's had health problems.
- 7:28Speaker 3: This is a huge blow to the Eagles.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Lane Johnson, Hall of Famer, all that's good. Put that aside.
- 7:33Speaker 3: The Philadelphia Eagles season is going to be shaped by this.
- 7:36Speaker 3: They are a different team when he's out there. The
- 7:38Speaker 3: number is stunning. 122-63 with him, 18-30 without him. But
- 7:43Speaker 3: here's another stat. EPA, expected output per play. They are
- 7:47Speaker 3: third best in the NFL when Lane Johnson's on the field.
- 7:50Speaker 3: They are 28th best when he's not since 2013. He's
- 7:54Speaker 3: allowed four sacks since 2020. Four sacks, Paul.
- 7:58Speaker 2: He's allowed zero sacks the last three seasons.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Look at this graphic. 122 and 63 with, 18 and
- 8:03Speaker 4: 30 without. That is not a coincidence. He has been
- 8:06Speaker 4: the sure thing the past decade there. Like we talked about,
- 8:08Speaker 4: you have Fletcher Cox. You have different players that come
- 8:11Speaker 4: and go on that team. He's always healthy. He's always
- 8:13Speaker 4: been there until the past year and a half. Clearly,
- 8:15Speaker 4: he's having some issues going through them, but rarely does
- 8:18Speaker 4: the team have this happen. You have injuries during the
- 8:20Speaker 4: season where you have to replace someone. You kind of
- 8:22Speaker 4: come out of nowhere. But replacing a star, truly a
- 8:25Speaker 4: star offensive tackle, you can't do it.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Well, they drafted a guy in the third round, Markel Bell,
- 8:29Speaker 3: who's gigantic. He's just like Lane Johnson.
- 8:31Speaker 2: He's 6'9. So they're going to get a look at
- 8:34Speaker 2: him and see if he's the answer.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Here's my question. I'll take it another step. Are they
- 8:37Speaker 3: going to start trading at the trade deadline?
- 8:39Speaker 4: They might have to because if you look at the Eagles,
- 8:40Speaker 4: the last two weeks they've had bad losses. They lost
- 8:43Speaker 4: to Case Keenum.
- 8:43Speaker 2: No offense.
- 8:44Speaker 4: You shouldn't lose to third-string quarterbacks.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Not if you don't have anybody. Nobody's healthy on the Eagles. Right.
- 8:48Speaker 4: And then last week, up 10, fourth quarter against the Rams.
- 8:51Speaker 4: That was going to be the right-to-ship win. And by
- 8:54Speaker 4: losing at the end, it made it feel worse. Didn't
- 8:56Speaker 4: you say Hertz had 93 yards passing the other day?
- 8:58Speaker 2: He was terrible.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Terrible.
- 8:59Speaker 2: He would not let go of the ball. Zero for
- 9:00Speaker 2: 12 on third down. Honestly, people are talking about a
- 9:04Speaker 2: lot of who would be gone midseason.
- 9:07Speaker 3: I tell you right now, Saquon Barkley's future with the
- 9:09Speaker 3: Eagles is not much because he's about to turn 30,
- 9:12Speaker 3: and they're not going anywhere this year.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Without Lane Johnson, where are they going this year?
- 9:15Speaker 4: Okay, I know what you're saying. The fans would absolutely
- 9:18Speaker 4: tear the place down if they traded Saquon Barkley.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I mean, I don't think they will.
- 9:21Speaker 4: And I don't think you're warm-taking there. I think you're
- 9:22Speaker 4: saying if this is a lost season. This is the
- 9:24Speaker 4: last year of Saquon's contract or second to last year?
- 9:27Speaker 2: Well, even if it's not his last year, they could
- 9:29Speaker 2: move on. There's nothing safe.
- 9:31Speaker 3: They really need a rebuild. Now, Howie Roseman, the GM,
- 9:34Speaker 3: has never had a full rebuild. He's always tried to retool.
- 9:37Speaker 3: But Lane Johnson seems like he's one of those players
- 9:39Speaker 3: where if you pull him out, the whole Jenga puzzle falls.
- 9:42Speaker 3: I am so down on the Eagles because everybody else
- 9:45Speaker 3: is hurt. They have six starters that are going to
- 9:46Speaker 3: be out for this upcoming game.
- 9:48Speaker 4: You know how it plays locally. Nick Sirianni seems on
- 9:50Speaker 4: a perpetual hot seat, even though he won a Super
- 9:52Speaker 4: Bowl there. If somehow they don't make the playoffs, the
- 9:54Speaker 4: fallout is major, minor?
- 9:56Speaker 3: Major for Nick Sirianni. I mean, he has all these
- 9:59Speaker 3: people in the media. who have issues with him. I
- 10:01Speaker 3: think he could be in big trouble. Or, you know,
- 10:04Speaker 3: but he's been in big trouble in the past and
- 10:05Speaker 3: won a Super Bowl.
- 10:06Speaker 4: But a couple years ago, he fired both coordinators when
- 10:08Speaker 4: he was in big trouble. You only get to do
- 10:09Speaker 4: that once, usually, as a head coach.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Well, the problem is all his coordinators keep leaving. You know,
- 10:14Speaker 3: I'm playing chess while everyone's playing checkers. Kellen Moore gets
- 10:18Speaker 3: fired in New Orleans, comes back. Nick Sirianni and Kellen
- 10:21Speaker 3: Moore reunited. They won a Super Bowl. That's the plan
- 10:24Speaker 3: if I'm an Eagles fan. Sean Mannion, our buddy, is
- 10:26Speaker 3: offensive coordinator. Without Lane Johnson on the field, Sean Mannion
- 10:30Speaker 3: has a tough job. They're not going to be able
- 10:31Speaker 3: to run the ball. They're not going to be able
- 10:33Speaker 3: to protect the Hurts.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Zach Bonds hurt. I mean, you could go down the list.
- 10:36Speaker 4: These are serious players.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Saquon Turk. I mean, it's bad.
- 10:39Speaker 3: So this was a Super Bowl pick by a lot
- 10:41Speaker 3: of people. And that's why it's so hard to predict
- 10:43Speaker 3: football because of injuries.
- 10:44Speaker 4: All right, before we go to break, some news on
- 10:46Speaker 4: the Dan Patrick Show about a half an hour ago.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Odell Beckham Jr., no longer a Giant, picked up short
- 10:52Speaker 4: notice by the Vikings. Your thoughts, your reaction when you
- 10:54Speaker 4: heard that about the Vikings?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if this is a long-term of anything. Patchwork?
- 10:58Speaker 3: Yeah, and also I watched Odell a little bit in preseason.
- 11:02Speaker 3: He looks fine, but older wide receivers, it is not
- 11:05Speaker 3: a kind league for them.
- 11:06Speaker 4: You only need 10 weeks out of him. And this
- 11:08Speaker 4: has happened before. I know he's old. I know the
- 11:10Speaker 4: Giants didn't use him. If the Giants can't, why could
- 11:12Speaker 4: the Vikings? But maybe the Vikings are thinking, hey, let's
- 11:14Speaker 4: try anything we can. We find ourselves at 4-0.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I'll do it over under seven catches for the Vikings.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Seven catches for his Viking career?
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I would be shocked if he went
- 11:23Speaker 2: over that.
- 11:24Speaker 4: I'll set that over another six and a half and
- 11:25Speaker 4: take that with you.
- 11:26Speaker 2: All right, meanwhile, let's look at the NBC schedule. It's awesome.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Every day we're streaming live every weekday on NBC Sports Now,
- 11:33Speaker 3: along with our buddies at PFT Live, The Dan Levitard Show,
- 11:37Speaker 3: and Chris Sims Unbuttoned. Watch the channel for free on
- 11:40Speaker 3: most streaming platforms. And then tomorrow, I understand that we'll
- 11:45Speaker 3: have our buddy Jon Fanta on.
- 11:46Speaker 2: It's so exciting.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Are we the best-looking people in that shop?
- 11:49Speaker 2: 100% no. The best-looking duo? I don't know.
- 11:54Speaker 3: I mean, we're one of two duos. I don't think
- 11:57Speaker 3: Sims would appreciate that if we said that.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Are we the best-looking guys on a show called Not
- 12:00Speaker 4: So Fast?
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yes, we definitely are. Look at the hair there. All right.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Coming up next, warm takes. Oh, boy.
- 12:08Speaker 3: I have something negative to say about the Chicago White Sox,
- 12:11Speaker 3: and I really had to stretch to do that.
- 12:14Speaker 2: And the worst single move of the NFL offseason. That's next.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Not so fast.
- 12:19Speaker 4: These are some scalding takes you're teasing here. Anti-White Sox.
- 12:22Speaker 4: That's gutsy right now.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Yep. Sorry, Chicago.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff here, NBC
- 12:30Speaker 4: Sports Now. Tune in daily, noon Eastern.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Bingo.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Oh, it looks like it's going yard.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Oh, it looks like it's gone ball. That's gone.
- 12:37Speaker 4: That is not so fast.
- 12:39Speaker 2: What a play.
- 12:40Speaker 4: He even showed it to the bullpen. Mauricio Dubon. If
- 12:43Speaker 4: you're a Braves fan, that was a feel-good moment. Didn't
- 12:45Speaker 4: work out so well, but that was pretty awesome.
- 12:46Speaker 3: That's my favorite play in sports, robbing a home run.
- 12:49Speaker 3: I used to, as a kid, I used to jump
- 12:50Speaker 3: over my backyard fence all the time and rob.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Did you catch your ribs on the metal stuff?
- 12:55Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I went all out.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Would you rather rob a home run to win a
- 12:58Speaker 4: World Series than hit a home run? That's obvious because
- 13:00Speaker 4: I don't think it's ever been done, right?
- 13:03Speaker 3: I would want to hit a home run. Just that
- 13:05Speaker 3: walk or run around the bases would be amazing.
- 13:07Speaker 4: It's almost like LeBron blocking the shot to win the title.
- 13:09Speaker 3: No, the odds of that happening are slim. I just
- 13:12Speaker 3: want to hit one major league home run, Paul. Can
- 13:14Speaker 3: you make that happen?
- 13:15Speaker 4: I don't know if you can make that happen. All right,
- 13:17Speaker 4: it's time for warm takes.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Let's get it going.
- 13:18Speaker 4: You've got some hot ones coming. I'm going to go
- 13:20Speaker 4: warm early.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Quique Hernandez of the Dodgers. Yeah, Mr. October-ish. This guy,
- 13:27Speaker 4: out of nowhere. Was he in bubble wrap all year?
- 13:29Speaker 4: He hit the home run for the Dodgers last night.
- 13:31Speaker 4: You're like, oh, there's Quique Hernandez. Of course I know him.
- 13:33Speaker 4: I see him every October. He hit the home run
- 13:36Speaker 4: off Chris Sale. He has a unique but fantastic reputation.
- 13:39Speaker 4: He's a solid player during the regular season. In 13 seasons,
- 13:42Speaker 4: he's never been an all-star in 13 years. He's a
- 13:47Speaker 4: career 235 hitter. That's not so good. He doesn't even
- 13:50Speaker 4: play that much. He played 90 games this season. But
- 13:53Speaker 4: in the postseason, he's unbelievable. He's a 275 hitter for
- 13:56Speaker 4: his career in the postseason. 17 of his career home
- 13:59Speaker 4: runs come in the postseason. That's more than 10%. He's
- 14:02Speaker 4: the only guy in baseball history to have more than 10%
- 14:04Speaker 4: of his career home runs in the postseason. That's a
- 14:07Speaker 4: nutty ratio. He's not going to the Hall of Fame.
- 14:10Speaker 4: He's going to the Dodgers Ring of Honor. I don't
- 14:12Speaker 4: even know if they have one out there. But he'll
- 14:13Speaker 4: be remembered forever because he's part of three or maybe
- 14:16Speaker 4: four World Series with the Dodgers. It's a weird career.
- 14:20Speaker 4: I think the comp, maybe, Andrew, is like a Robert Ori.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Robert Ori was a very good player early in his career,
- 14:25Speaker 4: probably better than Kike Hernandez. But then became a bench guy,
- 14:29Speaker 4: a role guy, but a high-end role guy. And then
- 14:31Speaker 4: he played for a bunch of different teams. Lakers, San Antonio,
- 14:34Speaker 4: hit big shots. Big shot Bob. And he's one of
- 14:36Speaker 4: those guys who's never going to the Hall of Fame,
- 14:38Speaker 4: Robert Ory. Maybe he should because he has seven titles.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Kiki Hernandez, doesn't matter. If he's hitting. 205 during the
- 14:44Speaker 4: regular season, I'm keeping him on the roster. He could
- 14:46Speaker 4: be like Udonis Haslam. He could be a Dodger for life.
- 14:49Speaker 4: You could stay home. You could work from home. You
- 14:51Speaker 4: could work online. You could just watch the games. But
- 14:53Speaker 4: in October, Kike Hernandez is fantastic. What a reputation to have.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm looking at his all-time stats on the list.
- 14:59Speaker 3: He's right there with guys like Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson,
- 15:02Speaker 3: Kike Hernandez. Obviously, with the expanded playoffs, you see a
- 15:06Speaker 3: lot of that. But it's really remarkable. Nobody has less
- 15:09Speaker 3: in the regular season and more in the postseason.
- 15:11Speaker 4: And he's one of those guys he seems to keep
- 15:13Speaker 4: cool every year. Every year we see him for the
- 15:15Speaker 4: Dodgers doing this. He beats a lot of teams. And
- 15:17Speaker 4: he's the kind of guy like, oh, I don't want
- 15:18Speaker 4: to face him. I'd rather face this guy than him.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 15:22Speaker 3: All right. I'm going to stay in baseball for my
- 15:24Speaker 3: warm take. Let's go to the Chicago White Sox.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Oh, boy.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Feel good story around Major League Baseball. They're ruining baseball, Paul.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Not for the reason you might think. They're great for baseball,
- 15:35Speaker 3: obviously going from worst record to possibly the ALCS or
- 15:38Speaker 3: even further this year. Incredible story. Except the way they're
- 15:41Speaker 3: doing it could be a problem. They are the ultimate
- 15:44Speaker 3: bullpen team. Everyone's going opener in the postseason, but they're
- 15:48Speaker 3: taking it to a new level. They use an opener
- 15:50Speaker 3: or bullpen game 31 times in 2026, the most in MLB.
- 15:54Speaker 3: In September, they went 21 consecutive games without going six innings.
- 15:58Speaker 3: And obviously in the playoffs, they're turning the dial even more.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I heard this theory out there that teams are gonna
- 16:04Speaker 3: start to build bullpen rotations Barely using starters at all.
- 16:09Speaker 3: So they go three innings, three innings, three innings, hopefully,
- 16:12Speaker 3: maybe with a.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Closer at the end.
- 16:13Speaker 3: That way the hitters don't get to see the pitchers
- 16:15Speaker 3: a second time and their arms are fresh. They can
- 16:17Speaker 3: go 100 miles an hour. This will lower ERAs. And
- 16:20Speaker 3: I'll tell you right now, look at the White Sox
- 16:22Speaker 3: in the playoffs.
- 16:23Speaker 2: 1-6-7 ERA.
- 16:25Speaker 3: It is going to be a disadvantage to hitters if
- 16:28Speaker 3: you have starters going to the bullpen like Chicago is
- 16:31Speaker 3: doing it. And I think this is not just a
- 16:32Speaker 3: postseason trend. I think teams are going to start to
- 16:34Speaker 3: build their teams this way, Paul. You can save some money.
- 16:37Speaker 3: You're not spending $ 30- something million on Tyler Glass now. You
- 16:40Speaker 3: can now have a lot of starters, draft a lot
- 16:42Speaker 3: of starters, move them to the bullpen, three or four innings,
- 16:45Speaker 3: and hitters are going to struggle. I think this could
- 16:47Speaker 3: be a big trend.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Well, I think you're 100% right, and you nailed it
- 16:50Speaker 4: at the end. I think this is financial. The White
- 16:52Speaker 4: Sox cannot spend... like the Cubs, like the Yankees, like
- 16:55Speaker 4: the Dodgers. And they don't try to. A couple years ago,
- 16:57Speaker 4: they had an ace named Eric Crochet. They let him go.
- 16:59Speaker 4: They're like, we can't pay him. We're not going to
- 17:01Speaker 4: pay him $ 200 million. So they're going to patchwork this.
- 17:04Speaker 4: And I think the Sox are going to do this
- 17:05Speaker 4: for the near future. It's working for them. It got
- 17:08Speaker 4: them through one series. It might get them through a
- 17:09Speaker 4: second series.
- 17:10Speaker 2: It's working for everybody.
- 17:11Speaker 4: And if I'm the Pirates and I have Paul Skeens,
- 17:15Speaker 4: am I going to pay Paul Skeens $ 300 million? Or
- 17:17Speaker 4: I'm going to trade him and build my bullpen up
- 17:19Speaker 4: and see if I could patchwork a game together with
- 17:22Speaker 4: closers and starters.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Yeah, they have a guy who has actually started, but
- 17:26Speaker 3: is an opener, Hagan Smith, who is the number five
- 17:28Speaker 3: overall pick in the draft. And they're using him as
- 17:30Speaker 3: a bullpen arm. I think that is the new trend.
- 17:32Speaker 3: And the Phillies did it with Andrew Payton, a very
- 17:34Speaker 3: high pick. Now he's a three- or four-inning guy.
- 17:37Speaker 2: This works.
- 17:37Speaker 4: And if the Sox ever have a guy who becomes
- 17:39Speaker 4: their next ace and next star, like Hagan Smith in
- 17:41Speaker 4: two years— If he wins 20, they're not going to
- 17:43Speaker 4: keep him. They won't be able to do it. They'll
- 17:45Speaker 4: trade him to the Dodgers. They'll trade him to the
- 17:47Speaker 4: Red Sox.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Or intentionally, they don't let him go eight innings.
- 17:50Speaker 3: They keep him in the three or four inning role
- 17:52Speaker 3: and keeps his salary down, at least for now.
- 17:54Speaker 4: You know, the comp there, if you want to comp
- 17:55Speaker 4: this out to the NFL, it's like having two running backs.
- 17:58Speaker 4: And we don't pay either. If you have Montgomery and Gibbs, well,
- 18:02Speaker 4: once you pay Gibbs, you can't have Montgomery anymore if
- 18:04Speaker 4: you're the Lions. A lot of these teams have that
- 18:06Speaker 4: patchwork backfield because they don't ever want to spend.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Well, I had another comp, and maybe I'm going too
- 18:10Speaker 3: far with this. I think it's like cover two in NFL.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Too high safety. All of a sudden, Offenses can't have
- 18:16Speaker 3: explosive plays. Now, I think a lot of teams are
- 18:20Speaker 3: used to seeing a pitcher four times and seeing his
- 18:22Speaker 3: velocity dip down a little bit. So you get to
- 18:24Speaker 3: the starting pitcher in the fourth, fifth, sixth inning, and
- 18:27Speaker 3: it's home run time.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Now, that's going to go away.
- 18:30Speaker 3: I think a lot of hitters are going to wish
- 18:33Speaker 3: that they could see the starter go longer because if
- 18:35Speaker 3: you get a fresh arm and he's throwing 99, 100, 101,
- 18:39Speaker 3: you're like, oh, okay. And all of a sudden, you
- 18:41Speaker 3: get a good lefty-lefty matchup. There are a lot of
- 18:44Speaker 3: advantages if teams can build a full staff that can
- 18:47Speaker 3: come out of the bullpen, start, whatever, flexibility.
- 18:50Speaker 4: We just comped the White Sox to Jameer Gibbs in
- 18:52Speaker 4: the backfield of the Lions and to cover two defenses.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Take that, NFL Live. All right, next up, here's my
- 18:57Speaker 4: hot take. Okay, warm take. The Padres star closer, Mason Miller.
- 19:01Speaker 4: I think everyone knows what happened last night. He missed
- 19:03Speaker 4: the game three, vital game three, at home, down two.
- 19:06Speaker 4: About an hour before the game, a tweet goes out
- 19:09Speaker 4: for a few reporters that Mason Miller's wife is in labor.
- 19:12Speaker 4: Sooner than expected. We don't know all the details. We
- 19:14Speaker 4: don't need to know all the details. He went to
- 19:16Speaker 4: the hospital to be with his wife as she's having
- 19:18Speaker 4: their first baby. So good for him. Do whatever you think, Mason.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Don't care. Glad you did it. Whatever. I'm glad this
- 19:24Speaker 4: worked out. I'm glad Michael King came in and got
- 19:27Speaker 4: the clothes to get the win. Because if this didn't
- 19:29Speaker 4: work out and the bullpen got torched, it would be
- 19:32Speaker 4: a much bigger story. And Mason Miller would be getting
- 19:34Speaker 4: heat for a long time from people who are maybe
- 19:36Speaker 4: not so understanding. I have a different take on this,
- 19:39Speaker 4: and we'll get to it in a second, but A
- 19:41Speaker 4: few things. If you're going to miss a playoff game
- 19:44Speaker 4: to be with your wife or you don't want to
- 19:46Speaker 4: miss the playoff game, she has to suggest it to you.
- 19:51Speaker 4: She has to say, Mason, go. Go throw 105. Go
- 19:54Speaker 4: throw gas. I'll be here. Are you sure? You've got
- 19:58Speaker 4: to ask four or five times. Are you sure you
- 19:59Speaker 4: want me to go?
- 20:00Speaker 2: I'll go.
- 20:00Speaker 4: Like Rocky 2. Go win. But the other thing is,
- 20:04Speaker 4: if you miss the birth of your child to be
- 20:06Speaker 4: at the playoff game, you've got to make sure you
- 20:07Speaker 4: get in the game. Like, let's say the Padres were
- 20:09Speaker 4: up 7-0 at the end of that game and they're
- 20:11Speaker 4: not going to use Miller because it's not a safe situation.
- 20:13Speaker 4: I'd have been like, hey, Skip, you got to put
- 20:16Speaker 4: me in. I can't not play at a game where
- 20:18Speaker 4: I miss my baby being born. So lastly, when this
- 20:21Speaker 4: story broke, everyone asked one thing when they found out
- 20:24Speaker 4: that Mason Miller was going to be gone for paternity
- 20:26Speaker 4: leave for a night. Is this their first baby? Why
- 20:29Speaker 4: should that matter? Why should that matter? Why don't second
- 20:32Speaker 4: babies get any love?
- 20:34Speaker 2: We know it matters.
- 20:35Speaker 4: I'm a second child. Here's the thing. It shouldn't matter.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Why doesn't second baby get any respect? I'm a second baby.
- 20:41Speaker 4: I assume my dad was there. I don't think he
- 20:42Speaker 4: was at the corner bar with his buddies having a drink.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Second baby, nah, I was at the first baby. My
- 20:47Speaker 4: older sister, he was there for that. Then I think
- 20:50Speaker 4: about second babies. I don't see a lot of pictures
- 20:53Speaker 4: in my mom's scrapbook of me. There's like 300 pictures
- 20:55Speaker 4: of my older sister. There's like four. There's not a
- 20:57Speaker 4: lot of proof that I had a childhood on the
- 20:59Speaker 4: south side of Chicago. There's like four pictures of me.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Second children should get more respect.
- 21:03Speaker 2: I have two kids. I don't even know the name
- 21:05Speaker 2: of the second one. I barely remember.
- 21:06Speaker 4: You've seen her before.
- 21:07Speaker 2: No, I'm just kidding. Love you.
- 21:09Speaker 3: You know, now I'm fired up. She's a Rocky too.
- 21:12Speaker 3: That's my favorite scene. Maybe in all movies.
- 21:15Speaker 2: She goes... Wait, what was that? When?
- 21:17Speaker 3: Then the bells come in. We should have that clip
- 21:20Speaker 3: ready to play. I can run through this TV screen
- 21:22Speaker 3: right now.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you can. Okay, that was awesome.
- 21:24Speaker 3: All right, my next warm take, let's do a little NFL.
- 21:26Speaker 3: I'm going to tell you right now, the single worst
- 21:30Speaker 3: move of the offseason came out of the defending champion,
- 21:33Speaker 3: Seattle Seahawks. Why'd they let Kenneth Walker go? Apparently, Walker
- 21:38Speaker 3: said they didn't even offer him an extension. Instead, he
- 21:41Speaker 3: signed with the Chiefs. Three years, $ 43 million. And you
- 21:44Speaker 3: know what's happening right now. He's absolutely tearing it up. Paul,
- 21:47Speaker 3: you said he's a September MVP. Hard to argue with.
- 21:50Speaker 2: 487 rushing yards. Two TDs against the Raiders on Sunday.
- 21:54Speaker 2: He's been amazing.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Meanwhile, in Seattle, they brought in Joe Mixon, veteran. They
- 22:01Speaker 3: had to let him go because he didn't pass the physical.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Jadarian Price, their rookie, first-round pick on the IR. Zach
- 22:08Speaker 3: Charbonnet got hurt last year. Apparently, he's not even close.
- 22:11Speaker 3: So they don't have an answer running back. Well, listen,
- 22:13Speaker 3: Seattle's 3-1, Paul. But it is possibly trouble time. They
- 22:18Speaker 3: can't run the ball. Sam Darner was injured. They look OK.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Their defense isn't quite the same domination it was at
- 22:24Speaker 3: the end of last year. And you've got those two
- 22:26Speaker 3: monsters in the NFC West, San Francisco and the L.A.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Rams.
- 22:31Speaker 3: If Seattle, once they play those teams, they're going to
- 22:33Speaker 3: want to control the ball on the ground. So Matthew
- 22:35Speaker 3: Stafford's not out there. And Brock Purdy, possible MVP, is
- 22:38Speaker 3: not out there. And they can't do it. The whole
- 22:40Speaker 3: formula is messed up because they don't have a running back.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Why didn't they sign Kenneth Walker? It wasn't that much money, Paul.
- 22:46Speaker 4: It wasn't big picture that much money. I'm going to
- 22:48Speaker 4: take check myself. When this happened, I said on the
- 22:50Speaker 4: Dan Patrick Show and texting to you, I think this
- 22:52Speaker 4: is a great move by the Seahawks. Not parking all
- 22:55Speaker 4: that money into a running back on a second contract. Man,
- 22:57Speaker 4: was I wrong. I looked at the Seahawks as a
- 22:59Speaker 4: team that's big on fiscal responsibility. Their GM does not
- 23:03Speaker 4: like spending money in places where it doesn't return. They
- 23:06Speaker 4: thought to themselves, we got the best of Kenneth Walker,
- 23:08Speaker 4: Super Bowl MVP. It worked out. Let someone else pay
- 23:11Speaker 4: for the second half of his career. Well, I don't
- 23:13Speaker 4: think people realize how much energy he had left. At
- 23:15Speaker 4: least for this season, it looks like a terrible letting
- 23:17Speaker 4: go of a player.
- 23:18Speaker 3: It's always kind of weird. They platoon Kenneth Walker a lot.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Then Charbonnet got hurt. Then they had to give all
- 23:23Speaker 3: the carries to Walker. They immediately improved as a team.
- 23:26Speaker 3: And you watch Kenneth Walker. I always thought, why isn't
- 23:29Speaker 3: Seattle using him more? The guy is hard to tackle.
- 23:30Speaker 4: But I think they thought by getting Jadarian Price at
- 23:33Speaker 4: the end of the first round, you hold his rights
- 23:35Speaker 4: for four years at like $ 12 million total. Or we're
- 23:39Speaker 4: going to park $ 35 million in Ken Walker. They thought
- 23:41Speaker 4: to themselves, yes, Jadarian Price will be a younger version.
- 23:44Speaker 4: We'll have him for four years. Rinse and repeat. That
- 23:47Speaker 4: was their thought process. It's not working out well in September.
- 23:49Speaker 3: No, actually, Jadarian Price does look pretty good. He's obviously
- 23:52Speaker 3: going to be a good player. But Kenneth Walker is exceptional. And,
- 23:56Speaker 3: you know, I'm not a pay-a-running-back guy or a draft-a-running-back guy,
- 23:59Speaker 3: but I am watching Kansas City, and my eyes are wide.
- 24:02Speaker 2: He is awesome.
- 24:03Speaker 4: All right, last weekend was a very good college football season.
- 24:05Speaker 4: One of the biggest games was Minnesota taking down Michigan.
- 24:08Speaker 4: We have the Minnesota head coach, the Golden Gophers head coach, P.J. Fleck,
- 24:12Speaker 4: joining us next. Crowd surfing, we'll talk about all of it.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Stick around. Yeah, I had to take check myself.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Yep.
- 24:20Speaker 4: You got to admit when you're wrong. Yeah, I thought
- 24:22Speaker 4: it was the.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Oh, me too. And I think most people.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Fiscal responsibility.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, we love fiscal responsibility. Welcome back to Not So Fast.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I'm Andrew Perloff.
- 24:30Speaker 3: He's Paul Paps, NBC Sports Now. And Peacock, of course,
- 24:34Speaker 3: one of the biggest wins of the weekend. Minnesota knocks
- 24:37Speaker 3: off Michigan, and we're so happy... to be joined by
- 24:40Speaker 3: Minnesota head coach P.J.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Fleck.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Now, Coach, you might not remember this, but in 2018,
- 24:45Speaker 3: you gave a hype-up speech to Dan and Danette to
- 24:48Speaker 3: do a polar plunge in Minnesota. Now, is that one
- 24:51Speaker 3: of your greatest coaching feats to make us do something manly?
- 24:55Speaker 2: Because we were inspired. We were ready to run through
- 24:57Speaker 2: a wall.
- 24:58Speaker 6: Well, how'd you feel after it? That's the question. I
- 25:00Speaker 6: don't know if I did my job if you didn't
- 25:02Speaker 6: feel great after it.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I felt cold.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Yeah, hypothermia is not that bad, Coach.
- 25:06Speaker 2: No. Yeah.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Hey, now it's all about those cold plunges.
- 25:09Speaker 6: So we were way ahead of the curve.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:11Speaker 4: It made us ready for the next day's game. All right,
- 25:13Speaker 4: let's get to your big win on the weekend. We
- 25:15Speaker 4: all watched it. Minnesota taking down Michigan at home. I'm curious.
- 25:18Speaker 4: You're a hyped-up guy. You're a pump-up guy. We see that.
- 25:21Speaker 4: When you have a game like that where your kids
- 25:23Speaker 4: are already pumped up, right before you go out on
- 25:25Speaker 4: the field, are you trying to get them up even
- 25:27Speaker 4: further or are you trying to get them focused and
- 25:28Speaker 4: calm down a little bit?
- 25:30Speaker 6: It's a mixture of both. I mean, we always take
- 25:32Speaker 6: some deep breaths. I want them to have to take
- 25:34Speaker 6: some deep breaths before they go out there. And, you know,
- 25:36Speaker 6: I mean, you're prepared throughout the entire week for what
- 25:38Speaker 6: you're going to go do. And there's there's a build
- 25:41Speaker 6: up to the game. And once you get in that
- 25:43Speaker 6: locker room, man, I mean, when you're playing, I played
- 25:45Speaker 6: for a guy by the name of Joe Novak at
- 25:47Speaker 6: Northern Illinois. And he said that there's two types of games.
- 25:49Speaker 6: There's coaches games and players games. And he goes, you know,
- 25:52Speaker 6: those coaches games are when you're 30 point favorites or
- 25:54Speaker 6: 35 point favorites. You're supposed to win those games. And
- 25:58Speaker 6: I get that piece. But then he also said there
- 26:00Speaker 6: are players games when you're playing ranked teams, you're underdogs
- 26:03Speaker 6: and you're playing for the little brown jug. And we
- 26:06Speaker 6: haven't won that here in Minnesota at Minnesota since 1977.
- 26:10Speaker 6: If you can't get up for that game, I mean,
- 26:12Speaker 6: you're not breathing and living. So he called those players games.
- 26:16Speaker 6: You don't really need to say much to a player
- 26:17Speaker 6: in a players game. They went out there and got
- 26:19Speaker 6: it done.
- 26:19Speaker 4: And I'm so happy for him.
- 26:21Speaker 3: I mean, you could tell on the TV, the crowd
- 26:23Speaker 3: in Minnesota, uh, on Saturday, I can't imagine what impact
- 26:27Speaker 3: that had on the game. If you're trying to calm
- 26:28Speaker 3: anyone down, the second they got on that field, it
- 26:30Speaker 3: felt like from start to finish, just hype and just
- 26:34Speaker 3: excitement around Minnesota for that.
- 26:36Speaker 6: You could just feel that energy. And it's unique because
- 26:39Speaker 6: we have four rivalry trophies here at the University of Minnesota.
- 26:42Speaker 6: And for the first time since I've been here, we
- 26:44Speaker 6: have all four of those games this year, starting with Michigan.
- 26:47Speaker 6: And then you have Iowa for Floyd of Rosedale. You've
- 26:51Speaker 6: got Paul Bunyan's action with Wisconsin, and you've got the
- 26:53Speaker 6: governor's bell at Penn State. We have all four of
- 26:56Speaker 6: those this year.
- 26:57Speaker 2: It was interesting.
- 26:57Speaker 6: One of the members of the media last week was like,
- 27:01Speaker 6: he's an older guy, and he was talking about how
- 27:03Speaker 6: this is the number one rival of all of our
- 27:06Speaker 6: fan base. I'm kind of looking at him, and I'm
- 27:08Speaker 6: sitting there going, when I was hired here, they said,
- 27:10Speaker 6: we only want you to beat Wisconsin because we haven't
- 27:12Speaker 6: beaten them for 15 straight years. You only have to
- 27:14Speaker 6: beat Wisconsin, and you can stay forever. I looked at him,
- 27:17Speaker 6: and I was like, they didn't mention Michigan when I
- 27:19Speaker 6: first came here, but Those four rivalry trophies are so important,
- 27:23Speaker 6: and you can just tell what it means to our state,
- 27:25Speaker 6: especially after you bring it home where we haven't had
- 27:27Speaker 6: it for so long, especially winning it here in Minneapolis.
- 27:31Speaker 6: The reaction from our fans has just been overwhelming because
- 27:35Speaker 6: they're just so proud and creating those moments and memories,
- 27:38Speaker 6: and a lot of them connecting that day in 1977
- 27:41Speaker 6: that now have their children and grandchildren with them, and
- 27:44Speaker 6: they remember that day.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Coach, big schedule coming up. Purdue, Iowa, Indiana. I know
- 27:49Speaker 4: we say you don't look forward. How do you keep
- 27:51Speaker 4: your players from looking forward to games on the schedule?
- 27:54Speaker 6: Well, you play in the Big Ten. You know, and
- 27:56Speaker 6: one game is everything. I mean, you put everything into
- 28:00Speaker 6: one game championship seasons. I think you have to do that.
- 28:03Speaker 6: You know, I mean, one through 18 in our Big Ten,
- 28:05Speaker 6: anybody can beat anybody any given Saturday. And I think
- 28:08Speaker 6: the SEC shows that as well. It's incredibly competitive, probably
- 28:11Speaker 6: more competitive than it's ever been. You know, it used
- 28:13Speaker 6: to be when somebody would take over a job, it'd
- 28:14Speaker 6: be two, three years before they could probably make it
- 28:17Speaker 6: their own. You can flip it and make it your
- 28:19Speaker 6: team within one year with 80 to 85 new players.
- 28:22Speaker 6: or in that second year, be like, hey, we brought
- 28:24Speaker 6: in all these guys, and now we developed them, and
- 28:25Speaker 6: here we go. So every single week, you better bring it,
- 28:28Speaker 6: and we understand that anybody can win any given Saturday,
- 28:31Speaker 6: and you better be at your best.
- 28:34Speaker 4: Coach, we'd like to do a thing here. It's called
- 28:35Speaker 4: such thing as a dumb question. I think Minnesota uniforms,
- 28:38Speaker 4: I'm a big uniform guy, is clearly top five in
- 28:40Speaker 4: the country, and I'm not pandering. I really do like them.
- 28:43Speaker 4: As a coach, is it in your contract, or do
- 28:45Speaker 4: you have any level of approval for uniforms from week
- 28:48Speaker 4: to week?
- 28:49Speaker 6: I do have a say.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Actually, our captains have a say.
- 28:52Speaker 6: Our captains work with our equipment manager and really before
- 28:55Speaker 6: training camp starts about the looks they want each week.
- 28:58Speaker 6: Then I kind of look at them because what I
- 29:00Speaker 6: want to do is I always want to be opposite
- 29:02Speaker 6: of what the other team has. So let's say an
- 29:04Speaker 6: opposite team has a white helmet. I want a maroon helmet.
- 29:07Speaker 6: Let's say the team has a gold helmet, then I
- 29:08Speaker 6: want a white helmet. I never want our quarterback to
- 29:11Speaker 6: ever see the same thing. And so you're looking at
- 29:14Speaker 6: it through a quarterback lens, not just a fashion lens.
- 29:18Speaker 6: And sometimes the players will come up with something, and
- 29:20Speaker 6: it's great, but I'll be like, hey, guys, we might
- 29:22Speaker 6: have to change the jersey or the pant or the
- 29:24Speaker 6: helmet just because we want to alternate that.
- 29:26Speaker 4: And be opposite of the opponent. I do want to
- 29:29Speaker 4: follow up on this for a second. You played at
- 29:30Speaker 4: Northern Illinois. You were a wide receiver. I actually saw
- 29:33Speaker 4: you play when I was at Southern Illinois. Players wear gloves.
- 29:36Speaker 4: Can you as a coach have all your skilled position
- 29:39Speaker 4: players wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs, wear yellow
- 29:42Speaker 4: gloves to make it easier for the quarterback to find
- 29:44Speaker 4: your guys? Is that legal?
- 29:46Speaker 6: I didn't use gloves as a wide receiver for a
- 29:48Speaker 6: long time in my career.
- 29:49Speaker 4: Tough guy.
- 29:50Speaker 6: I wish they had them back in the day, though,
- 29:53Speaker 6: because when I discovered them and I was like, wow, wait,
- 29:55Speaker 6: I actually had pretty good hands back in the day.
- 29:57Speaker 6: So it's like I could actually make my hands better
- 29:59Speaker 6: and stickier. But you had to use to spit on them,
- 30:02Speaker 6: the Newman's, and rub them together and get that leather
- 30:04Speaker 6: all warmed.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Up, you know?
- 30:06Speaker 3: Yeah, but yellow gloves, everyone's going to think there's flags
- 30:08Speaker 3: all over the field. So I think they have to
- 30:10Speaker 3: outlaw that. Just my thought.
- 30:12Speaker 2: All right, Coach.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Congratulations on the win over Michigan. Good luck the rest
- 30:16Speaker 3: of the season. Thank you so much for the time.
- 30:19Speaker 6: Yeah, thanks for having us on the show, guys.
- 30:20Speaker 4: Roll the boat, Sky.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Go Gophers.
- 30:22Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Thank you, Coach.
- 30:23Speaker 4: Yeah, that was an all-time great moment. We're at Super Bowl.
- 30:27Speaker 4: You're with the Dan Patrick Show. We're with the Dan
- 30:28Speaker 4: Patrick Show. And we're going to do a polar plunge.
- 30:31Speaker 4: And the video we showed you a little earlier, we said, Coach,
- 30:33Speaker 4: can you just give us a pregame speech? And our
- 30:36Speaker 4: crew went over there and shot one take with him.
- 30:38Speaker 4: And he just busted out, went nuts.
- 30:40Speaker 2: He went nuts.
- 30:41Speaker 3: And if you saw the postgame against Michigan, he's a
- 30:44Speaker 3: wild man. I would have gotten injured if I had
- 30:46Speaker 3: tried to do.
- 30:46Speaker 2: What he did. But he's also a great coach. I
- 30:48Speaker 2: think this is year 10 for him.
- 30:50Speaker 3: And when Indiana can win the title and Minnesota starts
- 30:53Speaker 3: out 4-1, I think the sky's the limit. I think
- 30:55Speaker 3: the playoff is a possibility, not necessarily a strong one,
- 30:59Speaker 3: but that's how college football is today.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Yeah, Indiana changed it for everybody. Every fan base is
- 31:03Speaker 4: going to say, why can't we do that? Let me
- 31:05Speaker 4: ask you, Pearl, as far as gloves and wide receivers,
- 31:08Speaker 4: we were in that era where when we were young,
- 31:10Speaker 4: it was stick them. Then it was bare handed.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:12Speaker 4: And then gloves. Is that the biggest performance enhancer in
- 31:15Speaker 4: sports history?
- 31:16Speaker 2: Well, legal, legal. There's something called steroids, which I would
- 31:20Speaker 2: say legal. It's crazy.
- 31:22Speaker 3: I guys make one handed catches. That wasn't a thing.
- 31:24Speaker 3: And I love that he talked about cutters. These cutters,
- 31:26Speaker 3: you know, cutters were originally, I did a story on
- 31:28Speaker 3: this once. The original glove? The original glove was for
- 31:32Speaker 3: handymen and workers. It was developed so you could work
- 31:35Speaker 3: with electronics and cables and things. And someone figured out
- 31:39Speaker 3: that it stuck. Now there's, you know, there's rules about
- 31:41Speaker 3: how sticky a glove can be.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Right. But I think receivers cheat all the time. How
- 31:45Speaker 2: else do you reach up with one hand and get
- 31:47Speaker 2: the ball?
- 31:47Speaker 4: I couldn't catch it with three hands.
- 31:49Speaker 2: By the way, you know I always have gloves. Hold
- 31:50Speaker 2: on a second. Vamp.
- 31:51Speaker 4: Classic Andrew Perloff. He likes to keep gloves in case
- 31:54Speaker 4: a quarterback comes in studio. And here he is. You know,
- 31:57Speaker 4: we're on live TV.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:58Speaker 3: So I carry these because you never know.
- 32:00Speaker 4: When a game's going to break out?
- 32:01Speaker 3: When a game's going to break out. And I am
- 32:03Speaker 3: so much better with gloves. I pride myself on my
- 32:07Speaker 3: receiving skills.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Now, I can't get open.
- 32:08Speaker 4: You know, with those on, I can't tell the difference
- 32:10Speaker 4: between you and Jester Jefferson by looking at you. You
- 32:12Speaker 4: look like the same person.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. No, this is a huge difference. I can't
- 32:16Speaker 2: really run, but I can catch ball.
- 32:18Speaker 4: Yeah, stationary target, like older Chris Carter.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Do most people not carry receiver gloves around just in case?
- 32:24Speaker 4: Stick around. Coming up after the break, it's the clip
- 32:26Speaker 4: joint and more from the gloved Andrew Perloff. Stick around.
- 32:28Speaker 4: Not so fast.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Yeah, these barely fit. What am I doing here? All right.
- 32:33Speaker 4: They're a little snug.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Cutters are sick, though. Cutters, you can catch anything. Randy
- 32:36Speaker 2: Moss wore cutters. Did the Raiders have a good loss
- 32:44Speaker 2: in that home game against Kansas City?
- 32:46Speaker 5: 100%.
- 32:48Speaker 7: I think this was the first game, to me, it
- 32:49Speaker 7: was a barometer for them. And I got to tell you,
- 32:52Speaker 7: I look at the Las Vegas Raiders. And what I
- 32:55Speaker 7: see is that this year's version of last year's New
- 32:58Speaker 7: England Patriots, and I say from this standpoint, they get
- 33:01Speaker 7: a new coach, Mike Brable, it's Clint Kubiak. They went
- 33:04Speaker 7: out and spent the most money in free agency, guaranteed money,
- 33:06Speaker 7: and they brought in about seven or eight different free agents,
- 33:08Speaker 7: Tyler Lindenbaum, Kirk Cousins, Quiddy Paye, N'Gobi Dean, Quay Walker.
- 33:13Speaker 7: They got two rookies starting in the back end, kind
- 33:15Speaker 7: of like what the New England Patriots did last year.
- 33:18Speaker 7: And they also have a last place schedule. So, I
- 33:21Speaker 7: think this game this week is very, very big for
- 33:23Speaker 7: them to see if they can bounce back. But I
- 33:25Speaker 7: love what I'm seeing in doing that. The only difference
- 33:28Speaker 7: in New England and them is I think the AFC
- 33:30Speaker 7: West is a lot tougher division than the AFC East
- 33:33Speaker 7: was a year ago.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff here in
- 33:37Speaker 4: NBC Sports Now. That's Bill Cowher, former Steelers coach who's
- 33:40Speaker 4: always great on the Dan Patrick Show earlier today. He
- 33:42Speaker 4: talked about comparing the Raiders and their last-place schedule today.
- 33:46Speaker 6: Fair.
- 33:46Speaker 4: They're doing very well to start, but that schedule is
- 33:48Speaker 4: getting really tough right now.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:50Speaker 3: The teams they've beaten are 1-11 so far this season.
- 33:54Speaker 2: But it feels good. It feels good. Then it almost
- 33:57Speaker 2: feels like a made-up schedule coming up.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Obviously, starting this weekend at New England, Patriots, Buffalo, the Rams,
- 34:04Speaker 3: the Jets, then the Niners and the Seahawks.
- 34:07Speaker 2: It's not the AFC West that's the problem.
- 34:08Speaker 3: It's the NFC West that's their problem and Buffalo. So
- 34:11Speaker 3: I don't think this is going to happen. New England
- 34:13Speaker 3: last year had such an easy schedule.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Not the case.
- 34:15Speaker 4: It's such a weird situation because a month ago on
- 34:17Speaker 4: Not So Fast, in month one of Not So Fast,
- 34:19Speaker 4: we talked about the opportunity to go from Mendoza to
- 34:22Speaker 4: get Mendoza in the game. And we thought that Jets
- 34:25Speaker 4: game would be it. When they hit that tough patch
- 34:26Speaker 4: of the season, it's going to go wrong. We didn't
- 34:28Speaker 4: anticipate Kirk Cousins playing so well and the entire team
- 34:31Speaker 4: playing so well.
- 34:32Speaker 3: I do like one part of that analogy. I think
- 34:34Speaker 3: Clint Kubiak could be like Michael McDonald in Seattle. He
- 34:38Speaker 3: looks like an elite coach. Looks like he can do
- 34:40Speaker 3: two things. He can do the play calling, and he's
- 34:43Speaker 3: a leader. I love Clint Kubiak. I just don't think
- 34:45Speaker 3: they're going to go where New England went.
- 34:46Speaker 4: And if you talk about fan bases that feel good
- 34:48Speaker 4: right now, feel positive, Raiders have to be right up
- 34:50Speaker 4: there because... They may not go to the playoffs this year,
- 34:53Speaker 4: but you've got to be unbelievably great about your future.
- 34:55Speaker 4: And you mentioned Tyler Lindenbaum. You know, people don't rejoice
- 34:58Speaker 4: when they get a center in the offseason. You should rejoice.
- 35:00Speaker 4: I mean, your team knows what it's doing, parking their
- 35:02Speaker 4: money in a star center.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Well, they almost took out Kansas City.
- 35:05Speaker 3: If they could steal a game from, say, the Bills
- 35:07Speaker 3: or the Rams, that's a huge leap, too.
- 35:09Speaker 2: And I don't think that's out of the question.
- 35:10Speaker 4: All right, former 49ers star quarterback Steve Young, always on
- 35:14Speaker 4: the show, always good. Dan asked him about the referee situation.
- 35:17Speaker 4: What would he do if he got into it with
- 35:19Speaker 4: a referee, or did he get in with referees? when
- 35:21Speaker 4: he was a hall of fame player.
- 35:24Speaker 5: Oh yeah. I, but I did it. I try to
- 35:27Speaker 5: do it productively, Dan. I found it very unhelpful to
- 35:31Speaker 5: just scream at him. Like they're like, like any human,
- 35:34Speaker 5: like I'm just screaming at you. Oh, you know, now
- 35:36Speaker 5: I'm mad, mad at you. I think you're a jerk
- 35:37Speaker 5: and I'm going to get you back. And I go,
- 35:39Speaker 5: So I would always do it subtly. And like, I
- 35:42Speaker 5: would say a little passive aggressively, you know, maybe extremely
- 35:46Speaker 5: passive aggressive.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Give me, for instance, I'm the official and I didn't,
- 35:49Speaker 1: I didn't call roughing the passer.
- 35:52Speaker 5: So, uh, you throw a football and you just get
- 35:55Speaker 5: mauled and someone grabs your helmet and turns it backwards,
- 35:57Speaker 5: you know, and, uh, and you're getting up and there's
- 36:00Speaker 5: no flag. Uh, you might say something like, wow, that was, uh,
- 36:04Speaker 5: that was a trip, you know? Did you catch that
- 36:06Speaker 5: at all? Were you watching?
- 36:10Speaker 2: I mean, Steve Young is pretty mild-mannered. I don't remember
- 36:13Speaker 2: him arguing a lot.
- 36:14Speaker 4: I like the word mauled, by the way, mauled by
- 36:16Speaker 4: a defender. But I think it's a smart strategy, and
- 36:19Speaker 4: that's kind of what we were talking about yesterday. The
- 36:21Speaker 4: refs don't want to get shown up and yelled at
- 36:23Speaker 4: over and over. I used to see Kobe Bryant do this.
- 36:27Speaker 4: You'd see Kobe Bryant kind of wave the ref over,
- 36:29Speaker 4: and he'd just say, hey, you give me the next one,
- 36:31Speaker 4: I'm getting the next one, right? Because he absolutely fouled me.
- 36:34Speaker 4: And then you get the next one and you don't
- 36:35Speaker 4: embarrass the ref. And I think that's a strategy more
- 36:37Speaker 4: players should have.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Well, I mean, look at Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City.
- 36:40Speaker 3: If the wind blows too hard, he looks at the
- 36:42Speaker 3: official like, where's the flag?
- 36:43Speaker 2: And he usually gets it.
- 36:44Speaker 4: If you give him a stern look, you get paralyzed
- 36:46Speaker 4: 15 yards.
- 36:47Speaker 2: So he's doing something right.
- 36:48Speaker 3: Steve, you have also talked about Barry Sanders, which is
- 36:51Speaker 3: how this all started. We'll get into that in a second.
- 36:53Speaker 3: But Dan asked if there was anyone like Barry in
- 36:55Speaker 3: his prime.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Anybody run like Barry Sanders that you ever seen?
- 37:01Speaker 5: I always said he's the only guy that I ever
- 37:03Speaker 5: went to the sidelines, you're sitting on the bench, talking
- 37:05Speaker 5: to the offensive coach, going through things. The only guy
- 37:10Speaker 5: I say, hey, hold up, hold up. I've got to
- 37:11Speaker 5: go watch Barry. I know you've got some important things
- 37:17Speaker 5: to talk about and a game to win.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Hold on.
- 37:19Speaker 5: I've got to go watch Barry.
- 37:21Speaker 4: I really enjoy hearing Hall of Famers talk about other
- 37:24Speaker 4: Hall of Famers. For Steve Young, before the question was done,
- 37:27Speaker 4: he goes, nope, that's the only guy I stood up
- 37:29Speaker 4: to watch because Barry Sanders, it could happen at any moment.
- 37:31Speaker 3: Remember when Barry would run into a pile and then
- 37:34Speaker 3: somehow he'd emerge out of that pile and get a
- 37:36Speaker 3: 75-yard touchdown?
- 37:37Speaker 4: Now, how this topic came up on the show today,
- 37:39Speaker 4: a little side moment, if you didn't watch the Dan
- 37:41Speaker 4: Patrick show earlier today, There is a lot of memorabilia
- 37:43Speaker 4: around this place. It's unbelievable. We call it the Dansonian.
- 37:46Speaker 4: There was an autographed ball of Barry Sanders that was
- 37:48Speaker 4: both knocked over and appeared to have some type of
- 37:50Speaker 4: glue or gel on it. And Dan was a bit distraught.
- 37:54Speaker 2: A bit distraught. Yeah. And rightfully so. That looked like
- 37:57Speaker 2: a valuable football.
- 37:58Speaker 4: And if you walk around here, you don't know what
- 38:00Speaker 4: you're going to walk into. You walk down a hallway like, oh,
- 38:02Speaker 4: there's a. Michael Phelps' swim trunks hanging from a bar.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 38:06Speaker 4: It's literally there.
- 38:07Speaker 3: You played a role in this because you were a
- 38:09Speaker 3: witness to the original crime, possibly.
- 38:11Speaker 5: Yes.
- 38:12Speaker 3: Of course, our social media manager, Morgan, knocked over a
- 38:15Speaker 3: football by accident. And I remember I was in the
- 38:17Speaker 3: corner of the room and you volunteered to help pick
- 38:19Speaker 3: it up.
- 38:20Speaker 2: But you held strong. You didn't narc her out. Yeah.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Like Grandma said, never narc anybody out. But there's so
- 38:25Speaker 4: much stuff in here. You do have to be careful
- 38:27Speaker 4: because we have people come in here sometimes and be like,
- 38:29Speaker 4: don't touch that. Don't touch that. Don't go near that
- 38:31Speaker 4: because there's some memorabilia. Dan mentioned the Kobe Bryant signed jersey.
- 38:34Speaker 4: It's fantastic. It's an all-star game jersey signed by Kobe
- 38:38Speaker 4: from Kobe Bryant to the White Mamba. And I think
- 38:40Speaker 4: that's the one that Dan, because Kobe's no longer with us,
- 38:43Speaker 4: that's the special one.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Oh, my God. And I'm pretty clumsy.
- 38:45Speaker 3: I will not get anywhere near Dan's side of the
- 38:47Speaker 3: man cave. That's all good. And I just try not
- 38:50Speaker 3: to knock anything off the desk.
- 38:51Speaker 4: All right, let's get back to baseball last night. Michael King,
- 38:54Speaker 4: the star pitcher for the Padres, he came in because
- 38:56Speaker 4: Mason Miller, not so fast, couldn't play last night. Michael
- 39:00Speaker 4: King talked about coming in, pitching two innings, and getting
- 39:02Speaker 4: the save.
- 39:04Speaker 1: I know that I have bullets in my arm that
- 39:08Speaker 1: I don't want to save. So I felt like it
- 39:12Speaker 1: needed to be the right time. I think that it
- 39:17Speaker 1: all aligned with Mason going on paternity. Even if he
- 39:21Speaker 1: was available, I was still going to be up and
- 39:24Speaker 1: ready to go in whatever situation that presented itself. So,
- 39:29Speaker 1: I mean, yeah. if you're in an elimination game, you
- 39:31Speaker 1: want everybody to be all in on it. And I
- 39:34Speaker 1: feel like not just me included, we have a bunch
- 39:36Speaker 1: of dogs down there that are all in.
- 39:38Speaker 3: Yeah, if I'm a manager and it's a playoff game,
- 39:41Speaker 3: I'm throwing everyone out there.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Good for him for volunteering. He was nasty. How much
- 39:45Speaker 2: does he have left is part of my question.
- 39:47Speaker 4: But you go day-to-day in the postseason. These days, five-game series,
- 39:50Speaker 4: you can't think long-term. You have to think short-term. Michael King, though,
- 39:54Speaker 4: he is becoming one of those guys where, remember Madison
- 39:56Speaker 4: Baumgartner years ago with the Giants where he was pitching
- 39:59Speaker 4: every game. He would pitch nine and then pitch three
- 40:01Speaker 4: more innings the next night. It's those things and how
- 40:03Speaker 4: you're remembered because Michael King, very good pitcher during the
- 40:06Speaker 4: regular season. Not a household name. He could walk in
- 40:09Speaker 4: in his full Padres uniform. I don't think people would
- 40:11Speaker 4: know it's him, generally. But that's how you become a legend,
- 40:14Speaker 4: by doing things off-base in the postseason.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Madison Bumgarner, though, won two World Series.
- 40:20Speaker 4: That's next level.
- 40:21Speaker 2: I mean, or three World Series. It's going to be, yeah,
- 40:24Speaker 2: I'd say it was next level.
- 40:25Speaker 3: All right, if we have time for one more clip,
- 40:26Speaker 3: I like this one because, to me, this is not
- 40:29Speaker 3: even a battle. The Bears and the Packers square off
- 40:31Speaker 3: this weekend. And Bears wide receiver Luther Burden talked about
- 40:34Speaker 3: his feelings going into the game.
- 40:37Speaker 8: We want to beat them really bad, like everybody else
- 40:41Speaker 8: in the room, every Chicago fan. We just want to
- 40:45Speaker 8: beat them real bad and make them quit.
- 40:51Speaker 5: Boom.
- 40:51Speaker 4: That is bulletin board material. That's like low-key, kind of mumbly,
- 40:55Speaker 4: not yelling it out there, but in Packer land, that's
- 40:57Speaker 4: like one of the stories this week.
- 40:59Speaker 3: Oh, the problem is the Packers are so hurt. Is
- 41:01Speaker 3: this even a real fair fight?
- 41:03Speaker 4: Well, what's interesting about these two teams now is Matt LaFleur,
- 41:06Speaker 4: not a bulletin board guy, not at all, especially with
- 41:08Speaker 4: the condition of his team right now. Ben Johnson has
- 41:10Speaker 4: greenlit everybody on the Bears.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Remember, Ben Johnson went after Matt LaFleur.
- 41:13Speaker 4: He sure did, right in his opening press conference. Ben
- 41:15Speaker 4: Johnson wears his smack talk on his sleeve. He's all in.
- 41:19Speaker 4: And so far, it's working out for him, at least
- 41:21Speaker 4: with the Packers.
- 41:22Speaker 3: Okay, now I'm not sure who's starting for Bears at quarterback.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Maybe Case Keenan will get another honorary start.
- 41:28Speaker 4: Looks like Bajan.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Okay, so that's a problem.
- 41:30Speaker 3: But if both teams were, if they had their starting quarterbacks,
- 41:33Speaker 3: I don't think the Packers are going to win many
- 41:34Speaker 3: more games.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Am I missing something right now?
- 41:36Speaker 3: Unless Micah Parsons comes back at full strength soon, they
- 41:40Speaker 3: are just really decimated. The Ezra and Cooper injury, the
- 41:43Speaker 3: linebacker last year, the Achilles, last week, that was so devastating.
- 41:47Speaker 2: He's such a good player. I feel so bad for
- 41:49Speaker 2: Green Bay fans.
- 41:50Speaker 4: Yeah, the Packers are decimated. There's no excuses, though, on
- 41:52Speaker 4: Packer Week. Right, before we go, it's time for the rando.
- 41:54Speaker 4: This is a story we covered in depth here on
- 41:56Speaker 4: Not So Fast. Kyle Juszczyk, the 49ers fullback, he got
- 42:01Speaker 4: the $ 15, 000 fine for celebrating the doing the drinking thing,
- 42:05Speaker 4: people thought he was like popping a beer and chugging it.
- 42:08Speaker 4: He said, my nickname is Juice. Juice check. Use check.
- 42:11Speaker 4: I'm drinking juice. Now, the NFL went back. They had
- 42:15Speaker 4: some meetings, I guess. I love the fact that like
- 42:17Speaker 4: Georgetown educated lawyers are like, we got to have the meeting,
- 42:21Speaker 4: whether it was juice or do we rescind the fine
- 42:23Speaker 4: for $ 15, 000. They actually had a meeting and they gave
- 42:25Speaker 4: him his 15K back.
- 42:26Speaker 2: But do you drink juice like this?
- 42:28Speaker 3: I've been wondering ever since it happened.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Maybe gin and juice, but I don't think that's how
- 42:31Speaker 2: you drink juice.
- 42:32Speaker 4: I don't know. I'm more of a sipper with juice.
- 42:34Speaker 4: But that doesn't look good. I'm not going to run
- 42:36Speaker 4: for a test and go... Just take a light sip.
- 42:38Speaker 4: That doesn't inspire the crowd. You've got to pound it.
- 42:40Speaker 3: By the way, he's out two to three weeks with
- 42:42Speaker 3: a really deep bone bruise. That's a big injury. He's
- 42:46Speaker 3: a gigantic player for them. It seems like whenever they're
- 42:48Speaker 3: running the ball well, it's behind Kyle Juszczyk.
- 42:50Speaker 4: You know, we need more vital fullbacks in this game.
- 42:53Speaker 4: It seems like there's only like three in the league
- 42:54Speaker 4: that are vital fullbacks.
- 42:55Speaker 2: And it works. I don't know why everyone doesn't do it.
- 42:57Speaker 4: We'll do an entire fullback show soon on Not So Fast,
- 43:00Speaker 4: maybe in March. All right, coming up next, constructive criticism
- 43:03Speaker 4: and the feel good. Stick around. Not So Fast.
- 43:05Speaker 2: We'll be right back. That's more of Kyle Brandt saying
- 43:08Speaker 2: the fullback. It's kind of in the angry run territory.
- 43:10Speaker 4: You can't call fullbacks. I love Kyle.
- 43:12Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 43:13Speaker 4: If I do melancholy blocks, can I not do melancholy
- 43:16Speaker 4: blocks because Kyle's got angry runs? Sunday Night Football heads
- 43:19Speaker 4: to Atlanta for a pivotal Week 5. Always pivotal in
- 43:22Speaker 4: Week 5. Ravens take on the Falcons in primetime. Sunday
- 43:25Speaker 4: Night Football on NBC and Peacock.
- 43:29Speaker 3: All right, welcome back to Not So Fast. Who knew
- 43:31Speaker 3: the Falcons were prime time television, but they sure are now.
- 43:34Speaker 2: That's exciting.
- 43:34Speaker 3: All right, Paul, we're a quarter way through the season,
- 43:37Speaker 3: sort of. With 17 games, you can't really get a quarter.
- 43:39Speaker 3: But if you look at the standings right now, obviously
- 43:42Speaker 3: things are going to change. What do you expect when
- 43:45Speaker 3: we reach the halfway point of the season? What is
- 43:47Speaker 3: a team, let's start in the AFC, that is going
- 43:50Speaker 3: to move the most?
- 43:52Speaker 4: This is a weird one because they're not going to move.
- 43:54Speaker 4: Everyone else will move. I'm going to go with the
- 43:55Speaker 4: Jacksonville Jaguars will not lose a game in the next month.
- 43:58Speaker 4: and we'll have one loss. They're going to be 7-1
- 44:01Speaker 4: at this point in the season because no one's challenging them,
- 44:04Speaker 4: no one's talking about them, and they're just playing good football.
- 44:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I love the Jaguars. I want to mulligan and
- 44:10Speaker 3: make them my Super Bowl team in the AFC.
- 44:11Speaker 2: What's yours?
- 44:12Speaker 3: But, unfortunately, I have them with an L in the
- 44:15Speaker 3: next month because I have the Houston Texans, who are 0-4,
- 44:18Speaker 3: going on a run. Now, listen, they're 0-4, but these
- 44:21Speaker 3: are good teams they've lost to. Look at the UCS
- 44:23Speaker 3: coming up. Tennessee, they're going to get the 1-4. Then
- 44:26Speaker 3: they get the Jags at home. Now, in Houston, oh,
- 44:29Speaker 3: I'm sorry, that's in London. And then they get the
- 44:32Speaker 3: Giants by Chargers in Cleveland. I think the Texans are
- 44:35Speaker 3: not done. I think they will be heard from. But
- 44:37Speaker 3: you're getting really good play out of C.J.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Stroud.
- 44:40Speaker 4: Yeah, and there's some friendly games at the end of
- 44:42Speaker 4: that season for the Texans. If they can get a
- 44:44Speaker 4: A hurt Eagles team or a hurt Packers team and
- 44:46Speaker 4: then the Titans, they can maybe piece it together after
- 44:49Speaker 4: a terrible situation.
- 44:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I think they're going to have a good month. Now,
- 44:51Speaker 3: the key to that team is very obvious. When Nico
- 44:53Speaker 3: Collins is on the field, they are very, very good
- 44:56Speaker 3: on offense.
- 44:57Speaker 2: When he's off, C.J. Stroud struggles.
- 44:59Speaker 3: But the defense can't be bad, Paul. I've been watching
- 45:02Speaker 3: this team for too long. D'Amico Ryans will figure it out.
- 45:04Speaker 4: Gave up four touchdowns to the Cowboys in the second half,
- 45:06Speaker 4: so they can be bad. They shouldn't be bad. NFC picture,
- 45:09Speaker 4: what do you got?
- 45:09Speaker 2: Okay, I am going with the Dallas Cowboys. They're about
- 45:13Speaker 2: to go on a run, Paul.
- 45:15Speaker 3: Sorry, their schedule is easy. And not only that, they
- 45:18Speaker 3: are now in one of the easiest divisions. in the
- 45:21Speaker 3: NFL because Philadelphia is not going to be great without
- 45:24Speaker 3: Lane Johnson.
- 45:24Speaker 2: The Giants are a very weak 3-1. Sorry, Jameis.
- 45:28Speaker 3: And the Commanders are a mess. Even with Jaden Daniels
- 45:30Speaker 3: coming back, the Commanders do not have everything together. The
- 45:33Speaker 3: Cowboys are going to storm to the top of the
- 45:36Speaker 3: division and stay there.
- 45:37Speaker 4: Here's how you can tell we don't prepare or rehearse
- 45:39Speaker 4: or share notes before the show. I also had the
- 45:41Speaker 4: Cowboys in the NFC.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Oh, come on.
- 45:42Speaker 4: No, I do. I think their defense is getting better,
- 45:45Speaker 4: not great. Their offense is fantastic. And it's more about
- 45:47Speaker 4: the rest of the division. They're just going to keep
- 45:49Speaker 4: losing games. The Cowboys will turn through some of these games,
- 45:51Speaker 4: and look at the teams they're facing. These are all
- 45:54Speaker 4: teams with issues until you get to the 49ers.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 45:57Speaker 3: The injuries for Green Bay and Philly. Dallas also, not
- 46:00Speaker 3: only that, they're improving a little bit on defense. They're
- 46:02Speaker 3: small improvements. Their offense is awesome.
- 46:05Speaker 4: All right, back to baseball. It's time for a little
- 46:07Speaker 4: clinch or clench. Four games today. I'm going to go
- 46:11Speaker 4: to you real quick. Braves, do they force Game 5
- 46:14Speaker 4: against the Dodgers?
- 46:15Speaker 3: You know, I like the Dodgers to keep rolling in
- 46:17Speaker 3: that series. Without Chris Sale, once you're through the Chris
- 46:21Speaker 3: Sale game, you're good against Atlanta.
- 46:22Speaker 4: Yeah, not picking against the Dodgers. Yankees, Rays.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Yankees seem dead in the water to me. They seem
- 46:28Speaker 2: really uninspired.
- 46:29Speaker 4: And the Rays, not star-laden team. Nobody talks about them.
- 46:32Speaker 4: They just play good baseball. They won all season. Guardians
- 46:35Speaker 4: versus the White Sox this afternoon. Sox team of destiny
- 46:38Speaker 4: or Guardians steal one?
- 46:39Speaker 3: I feel like the White Sox take one step back.
- 46:41Speaker 3: It can't be this easy. That's my only theory. It
- 46:44Speaker 3: just can't be this easy.
- 46:45Speaker 4: They can't go undefeated on a run. Like a magical
- 46:47Speaker 4: run can't be undefeated.
- 46:48Speaker 2: I'm going Cleveland. All right.
- 46:49Speaker 4: Padres, Brewers tonight.
- 46:51Speaker 2: I said it yesterday. That home field in San Diego
- 46:53Speaker 2: is everything. I say they force a game five.
- 46:55Speaker 4: Okay. Padres. Oh, man. The Brewers better get this one.
- 46:59Speaker 4: You do not want to.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Oh, man. No, you're okay. Let's bring it back to Milwaukee.
- 47:02Speaker 4: Let's bring it back to Milwaukee. Love the crowd there
- 47:04Speaker 4: as well. All right, time to move on to constructive criticism.
- 47:07Speaker 4: What you think of what we're doing, questions, tailgating, food, drink, football,
- 47:11Speaker 4: whatever it may be. Pearl, let's sneak one in here.
- 47:15Speaker 4: Build us your perfect tailgate for a Midwestern fall Sunday.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Oh, okay, you're from the Midwest, Paul. Help us out.
- 47:20Speaker 4: I'm going to leave with crockpots. Crockpots for the win.
- 47:22Speaker 4: You make a crockpot full of chili or meatballs.
- 47:25Speaker 3: What time are you getting there to do the crockpot?
- 47:27Speaker 3: Crockpots take some time to really stew.
- 47:29Speaker 4: You do it the night before. You put it in
- 47:30Speaker 4: the fridge, and then you put it in, you plug
- 47:32Speaker 4: it in, you have an adapter. So chili is the winner.
- 47:35Speaker 4: Chili is always a winner. If people don't like chili,
- 47:38Speaker 4: that's more for you. So perfect Midwestern tailgate. Apple cider
- 47:40Speaker 4: for the non-drinkers. Quality beer. Maybe a little bourbon or
- 47:44Speaker 4: whiskey for people. But also, don't be afraid to get
- 47:46Speaker 4: some morning donuts for the early risers.
- 47:48Speaker 3: You gave me a chili hack once. You might not
- 47:50Speaker 3: even know this, but I made chili. Actually, it's one
- 47:53Speaker 3: thing I can cook.
- 47:53Speaker 4: You're a good chili guy.
- 47:54Speaker 3: And you let it cool off for 10 minutes before
- 47:57Speaker 3: eating it. And you said, I don't like my chili
- 47:58Speaker 3: too hot, temperature-wise.
- 48:00Speaker 4: Yeah, you've got to let it coagulate.
- 48:01Speaker 2: That totally worked.
- 48:02Speaker 4: Coagulate. All right, one more real quick. Constructor criticism. Do
- 48:04Speaker 4: you think Super Bowl victories should weigh more heavily in
- 48:07Speaker 4: ranking the all-time quarterbacks? Or should MVPs weigh more heavily?
- 48:11Speaker 4: I mean, if you don't have a Super Bowl, it's
- 48:13Speaker 4: hard to get in the Hall of Fame. I don't
- 48:15Speaker 4: think it can be any bigger.
- 48:16Speaker 2: A Super Bowl win?
- 48:17Speaker 4: A Super Bowl victory, yeah.
- 48:19Speaker 2: No.
- 48:19Speaker 4: Matt Ryan's going to have a hard time.
- 48:21Speaker 2: Matt Ryan, maybe, but there are other guys. Jim Kelly,
- 48:25Speaker 2: there's no question about him.
- 48:26Speaker 4: He went to four. How about Phil Rivers?
- 48:28Speaker 3: Phil Rivers is going to be tough. He didn't even
- 48:30Speaker 3: make a Super Bowl, so that's tougher. Eli didn't get
- 48:34Speaker 3: in on the first ballot, which surprised me, so.
- 48:36Speaker 2: Maybe people are devaluing Super Bowl wins as well.
- 48:38Speaker 4: Time for the feel-good. Let's go back to San Diego,
- 48:41Speaker 4: back to the Padres, and back to the 90s.
- 48:43Speaker 2: Blink-182.
- 48:44Speaker 4: Here we go, Pearl. You love these guys. Tom DeLonge
- 48:48Speaker 4: in the backward hat, of course. They play... all the
- 48:51Speaker 4: small things all the time there in Padres land. And
- 48:54Speaker 4: there he is like, he's doing 90s rocker hands to
- 48:59Speaker 4: the camera, getting the crowd pumped up as if they
- 49:01Speaker 4: get more pumped up.
- 49:02Speaker 3: Okay, but I just want to make sure he's not
- 49:04Speaker 3: stepping on the toes of your favorite musician who is
- 49:06Speaker 3: a Toronto Blue Jays fan.
- 49:07Speaker 4: Rush?
- 49:08Speaker 3: Geddy Lee was always right behind the plate too. I
- 49:11Speaker 3: don't know, I feel like it's a little derivative.
- 49:12Speaker 4: There's room for Geddy Lee, there's room for Tom DeLonge.
- 49:15Speaker 4: People around here love Blink-188. Someone said they're the U2
- 49:18Speaker 4: of their generation.
- 49:21Speaker 2: It was also in the same generation as U2, but whatever.
- 49:24Speaker 4: Tune into the Dan Patchers tomorrow. Actor Ben Affleck on
- 49:26Speaker 4: the Dan Patch Show. Then come hang with us right here.
- 49:28Speaker 4: Not so fast. Pass and purl off.
- 49:30Speaker 2: See you.
- 49:30Speaker 4: Enjoy the games.
