- 0:32Speaker 1: are you?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Hey, dude, doing great. Thanks for having me.
- 0:34Speaker 1: You're going to get sick of talking to me.
- 0:36Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Saints are going to start their season, and you're going
- 0:39Speaker 1: to be like, thank God I don't have to go
- 0:40Speaker 1: on with that guy every day anymore.
- 0:42Speaker 2: No, I'm going to get at 5 p.m., and I'm
- 0:44Speaker 2: just going to stare at my phone every day waiting
- 0:46Speaker 2: and hoping you guys call me.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Why isn't Musso calling me?
- 0:51Speaker 2: What's going on? I'm going to be texting him all
- 0:52Speaker 2: the time. Why aren't you calling me?
- 0:54Speaker 1: I'm available. Okay, today, two players on season-ending IR. Let's
- 1:00Speaker 1: give everybody the deets.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, so two knee injuries, one of which was a
- 1:06Speaker 2: little bit of a surprise. Ty Chandler seemed to finish
- 1:09Speaker 2: the game up against the Los Angeles Rams, but then
- 1:10Speaker 2: wasn't on the practice field on Monday and then ends
- 1:14Speaker 2: up now going to season-ending IR. So, look, sometimes adrenaline
- 1:18Speaker 2: gets the best out of players and they stay on
- 1:20Speaker 2: the field despite an injury and things like that. Maybe
- 1:22Speaker 2: that's what happened. Maybe it's not. Maybe it wasn't something
- 1:24Speaker 2: that Maybe it was bothering him then, but started bothering
- 1:27Speaker 2: him after the fact. That happened with Julian Blackman, first
- 1:31Speaker 2: game of the year last year. Everything was a labrum injury,
- 1:33Speaker 2: not a knee injury, but could be something like that.
- 1:35Speaker 2: But Maliki Matoval, he also went to injury reserve, and
- 1:38Speaker 2: he took a pretty bad shot to the knee. uh,
- 1:42Speaker 2: during that game. So that one looked not pretty as
- 1:44Speaker 2: it was, but it wasn't a non-contact situation. It was,
- 1:47Speaker 2: you know, something that could have been avoidable with maybe,
- 1:49Speaker 2: I don't know, better, better tackling, I guess. I'm not sure,
- 1:52Speaker 2: but in any case, uh, that those, both of those
- 1:55Speaker 2: guys end up going to injured reserve. And those are
- 1:56Speaker 2: guys that were make it a play for potential roster spots,
- 1:59Speaker 2: especially Maliki Matavao, who was coming off of the practice
- 2:02Speaker 2: squad and kind of looked like one of the guys
- 2:04Speaker 2: in line to go from practice squad to active roster.
- 2:06Speaker 2: And so a disappointing end for both of those guys
- 2:08Speaker 2: before the season even gets, gets going. But, uh, running
- 2:11Speaker 2: back position is something that Saints recently addressed. Tight end
- 2:14Speaker 2: position is a, is a very deep room. So they'll
- 2:17Speaker 2: continue to, to see what they have in options at
- 2:19Speaker 2: both of those positions.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Um, okay. So it's certainly disappointing there. The Saints were
- 2:23Speaker 1: back on the practice field today. However, um, What did
- 2:27Speaker 1: they do?
- 2:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a little bit more of an active
- 2:30Speaker 2: day today than it was yesterday. Since yesterday was just
- 2:32Speaker 2: a walkthrough. Today was kind of going through more situational moments.
- 2:37Speaker 2: They worked some actual live drills. And by live, I
- 2:40Speaker 2: mean the ball and chains moved, not tackling or anything.
- 2:45Speaker 2: But they put together some drives. They worked on kind
- 2:49Speaker 2: of drive starters. They focused on kind of first down,
- 2:51Speaker 2: second down, third down, with fourth down available situations, things
- 2:54Speaker 2: like that. Kind of work in some of the situations
- 2:57Speaker 2: that gave them problems during the game against the ramps
- 3:01Speaker 2: and being able to get in and out of the
- 3:02Speaker 2: huddle and not having any penalties, doing so cleanly, things
- 3:06Speaker 2: like that. They were pretty clean all throughout on both
- 3:08Speaker 2: sides of the football throughout this practice, and so that
- 3:11Speaker 2: seemed to be the big focus on their work.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Ross Jackson's with us at RossJacksonNola. If you want to
- 3:16Speaker 1: give him a follow, you can read him at LouisianaSports.net.
- 3:20Speaker 1: You can always listen or watch Locked on Saints. As
- 3:23Speaker 1: they move through this final week of the preseason, I
- 3:26Speaker 1: know Kellen Moore met with reporters. Ross, are we expected
- 3:29Speaker 1: to see any more from the starters this week?
- 3:34Speaker 2: That is a decision that the Saints are going to
- 3:36Speaker 2: make before tomorrow night's practice at Tulane. I would imagine
- 3:41Speaker 2: that you're probably going to see some starters in that
- 3:43Speaker 2: final game. That's how they handled it last year. Offensive
- 3:46Speaker 2: starters played about 16 snaps right around there with some exceptions, right?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Guys rotating at heavy rotational positions. And then defensively around 20,
- 3:54Speaker 2: some odd snaps, similar situation there with some heavier rotational
- 3:57Speaker 2: situations in there too. But I think that there's some
- 4:00Speaker 2: value in, in getting their starters out there and giving
- 4:02Speaker 2: them the exposure and kind of getting into rhythm. Obviously
- 4:05Speaker 2: the injury risk is very real, especially with the amount
- 4:08Speaker 2: of injuries this team has dealt with over the course
- 4:10Speaker 2: of the season. But I do think that there's value
- 4:12Speaker 2: in getting the starters out there. I would be a
- 4:14Speaker 2: little bit surprised if we didn't see the starters, but
- 4:16Speaker 2: that's not to say that we won't or that we
- 4:18Speaker 2: certainly will.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:19Speaker 2: So yeah, They're going to make that decision, though, before
- 4:21Speaker 2: they go into the Uelmen Stadium practice tomorrow, and so
- 4:24Speaker 2: we'll be able to get a clear answer on that
- 4:26Speaker 2: tomorrow night.
- 4:26Speaker 1: That night practice at Uelmen is always a pretty cool
- 4:29Speaker 1: scene with the fans there, and it is one of
- 4:31Speaker 1: the really genuinely cool things about the preseason. What should
- 4:36Speaker 1: fans go into that practice or afterwards looking at the
- 4:40Speaker 1: reports be keeping an eye out for?
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're looking for, obviously, teams to stay healthy.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I think that's a big one.
- 4:46Speaker 2: At this point, you're also hoping that Chris Olave is
- 4:48Speaker 2: out on the field. Chris Olave left a little early
- 4:51Speaker 2: from practice in today's practice, but the kind of positive
- 4:56Speaker 2: update from Kellen Moore was that he just got the
- 4:58Speaker 2: wind knocked out of him. And so ideally with the
- 5:01Speaker 2: wind knocked out of him, you're back on the practice
- 5:02Speaker 2: field the next day. And so it could be a
- 5:05Speaker 2: sign of him just trying to take it very easy
- 5:09Speaker 2: with him and saying like, okay, we know what we
- 5:11Speaker 2: need to know about you kind of a situation, but certainly,
- 5:14Speaker 2: you know, you want to see him out on the
- 5:15Speaker 2: practice field, at least around. And then I think outside
- 5:18Speaker 2: of that, like, I think that it's like watching the
- 5:20Speaker 2: Saints rushing attack is, it's a very different rushing attack
- 5:24Speaker 2: this year than it was last year. A little bit
- 5:26Speaker 2: more zone heavy, a little bit more outside heavy, a
- 5:27Speaker 2: little bit more expansive in that way, though, not specifically
- 5:30Speaker 2: that like it was back in 2024, where it was
- 5:33Speaker 2: almost all outside of the tackles. But the Saints rushing
- 5:37Speaker 2: attack feels like it's expanded quite a bit. I think
- 5:39Speaker 2: that can be fun for fans to watch. And then,
- 5:41Speaker 2: you know, guys like Chase Young and Carl Granderson just
- 5:43Speaker 2: continue to have really incredible camps. They were great again today.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And so I think that's going to be a lot
- 5:49Speaker 2: of fun for fans to watch. And then maybe a
- 5:50Speaker 2: three-way kicking competition between Charlie Smith, Tanner Brown, and then
- 5:55Speaker 2: the addition of Daniel Carlson.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I am sure, Ross, at some point, I don't know this,
- 5:59Speaker 1: I'm assuming, that you're going to put out a roster projection. Yes. What...
- 6:04Speaker 1: do you think are going to be your toughest position
- 6:08Speaker 1: battle decisions to make as you hammer that out?
- 6:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the interior of the defensive line is
- 6:14Speaker 2: challenging now that some of the obvious answers aren't there, right?
- 6:18Speaker 2: Brian Brzee and his injury, John Ridgway has been out
- 6:21Speaker 2: for a little while now. And so I think that's
- 6:23Speaker 2: going to be a little bit tough. And there's been
- 6:25Speaker 2: a lot of guys like Christian Boyd, for instance, who
- 6:27Speaker 2: maybe might've been left off of a roster earlier on
- 6:29Speaker 2: in the season or the off season who, he has
- 6:32Speaker 2: done really well for himself to earn a roster spot
- 6:34Speaker 2: this season. So I think that's going to be one.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I think tight end just got a little bit more
- 6:38Speaker 2: complicated because it felt like the things were on their
- 6:40Speaker 2: way to keeping four on the roster. They might only
- 6:42Speaker 2: keep three now. And so where does that extra roster
- 6:44Speaker 2: spot go? I think that's going to be an interesting one.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Obviously quarterback is going to be interesting as well, because
- 6:49Speaker 2: we've seen positives on both sides of this thing when
- 6:51Speaker 2: it comes to that one, whether it be training camp
- 6:53Speaker 2: or preseason. I think those are probably going to be
- 6:55Speaker 2: the hardest ones. Everything else though, feels like the team's
- 6:59Speaker 2: pretty set at this point. And really, it's just kind
- 7:03Speaker 2: of building out the depth. And so that's where some
- 7:05Speaker 2: hits and misses are going to happen in terms of
- 7:07Speaker 2: who ends up making the roster, who doesn't make the roster.
- 7:10Speaker 2: And so obviously, there's going to be some consideration there.
- 7:12Speaker 2: But I think for the most part, this roster is
- 7:14Speaker 2: pretty clear.
- 7:15Speaker 1: All right, he's Ross Jackson, at RossJacksonNola. If you want
