- 0:12Speaker 1: in this corner standing it five foot nine, Wayne Town
- 0:18Speaker 1: with six wins.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Three losses, two arrests, four late payments on student loans,
- 0:23Speaker 2: and two total painkruptcies hits the Classy I'll go hold.
- 0:32Speaker 3: All right, Welcome back to another disition of mixt Company podcasts.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I'm your host, Jamison Welsh, as well as the other
- 0:37Speaker 3: host on this show, Classy Alcoholic Classy.
- 0:41Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 0:41Speaker 4: Man?
- 0:42Speaker 2: Oh man?
- 0:42Speaker 4: I am feeling great because we are back with episode six,
- 0:45Speaker 4: the first episode of twenty twenty five. If you can
- 0:48Speaker 4: even believe it. I'm still nursing my new year's hangover,
- 0:51Speaker 4: but I'm ready to start the year strong and keep
- 0:53Speaker 4: taking the show to the next level. How are you
- 0:55Speaker 4: feeling here in twenty twenty five, Jimson, I'm doing well.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I'm doing well.
- 0:58Speaker 3: You know, it's one of those things where you know,
- 1:00Speaker 3: time really flies, you know flies. We lived back it
- 1:03Speaker 3: last year, all the things that happened, the fights that
- 1:06Speaker 3: were talking about but didn't happen, the fights that we
- 1:08Speaker 3: want to see happen. You know, a lot of stuff
- 1:11Speaker 3: happened and you don't think about it because it's time
- 1:13Speaker 3: just flies at a rapid pace.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Well, I mean Glad even brought it up because, you know,
- 1:17Speaker 4: before we fully closed the book on twenty twenty four,
- 1:20Speaker 4: I wanted to talk about a few things.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I mean, in my opinion, it was a good.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Year for boxing, as long as we ignore the travesty
- 1:25Speaker 4: that was Mike Tyson coming back to the ring, which
- 1:27Speaker 4: I intend to.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Uh, that's not boxing, That's that's fair. It wasn't boxing.
- 1:31Speaker 2: That wasn't that's fair. That's fair.
- 1:33Speaker 4: It's just like a weird thing that happened that you know,
- 1:35Speaker 4: it's like a fever dream that we had. Woke up
- 1:37Speaker 4: from it, and then we're like, all right, we're back
- 1:39Speaker 4: to the rest of the year. In fact, yeah, I mean,
- 1:42Speaker 4: I don't really want to do a full year in
- 1:43Speaker 4: review or anything like that, but I do have to
- 1:45Speaker 4: ask you, did you have a favorite fight in twenty
- 1:48Speaker 4: twenty four?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Jis So the favorite fight is tricky, right, because it's
- 1:52Speaker 3: too cliche to say fear a usick one with everything
- 1:56Speaker 3: going on, like, it's too cliche to say that.
- 1:59Speaker 2: With that being said, that's.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Probably my favorite one and not just because Fury lost.
- 2:04Speaker 3: It's more of like whenever you have a heavyweight fight
- 2:08Speaker 3: in the non favorite wins, it's always an interesting situation,
- 2:13Speaker 3: but all those souls and the storylines around it, because
- 2:15Speaker 3: Fury is basically fight to fight when it comes to
- 2:17Speaker 3: retirement or to stop fighting whatever. So whenever you see
- 2:21Speaker 3: a situation like that, it's always interesting. But if I
- 2:24Speaker 3: looking back on it, the favorite five year is probably
- 2:28Speaker 3: that one. My least favorite fight is probably Ryan Garcia
- 2:32Speaker 3: versus Devin Haney just based off all the shanigans that
- 2:35Speaker 3: have come with that, Like I could do it out,
- 2:38Speaker 3: all the extras that have come with that, you know
- 2:39Speaker 3: what I mean, Like it's just a retute bit turnoff.
- 2:42Speaker 2: But it's been an interesting year, very interesting year to
- 2:45Speaker 2: say the least. So why was Fury versus you sick
- 2:48Speaker 2: one your favorite? As a post to part two, So
- 2:51Speaker 2: what it.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Comes to Fury is whatever, somebody is king of the hill, whatever,
- 2:55Speaker 3: somebody is the top dog, and everyone knows, was like, hey,
- 3:00Speaker 3: in order to get to this guy, you gotta do
- 3:02Speaker 3: this to me. There's something with that that you can't
- 3:06Speaker 3: necessarily place. And then when that fight is close, when
- 3:09Speaker 3: it's close on the cards, and it's like, hey, technically
- 3:13Speaker 3: it could either way, even though I thought you said one.
- 3:15Speaker 3: But with that being said, those are the fights that
- 3:18Speaker 3: we remember. Those are the ones we're like, ah, okay,
- 3:21Speaker 3: I remember when this fire took the crown. I remember
- 3:24Speaker 3: when this fighter got better. And those are things that
- 3:28Speaker 3: as boxes, we always remember when guys took that leap, right,
- 3:31Speaker 3: we always know that, hey remember when they did this
- 3:34Speaker 3: and they haven't looked back since it's one of those
- 3:37Speaker 3: type of things. And also we don't have many great
- 3:40Speaker 3: heavyweights anymore. There's not a long contending list of heavyweights,
- 3:44Speaker 3: so it's one of those things we look back on it.
- 3:46Speaker 3: It was like, hey, if Furre is the best guy
- 3:49Speaker 3: in U six two, who's the third best guy? I mean,
- 3:52Speaker 3: they're talking about Fury facing Joshua this year.
- 3:57Speaker 4: I mean, don't watch it, don't get me wrong, but
- 3:59Speaker 4: I'm not.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Excited about it.
- 4:00Speaker 3: No, I'll watch it like when I I might not
- 4:02Speaker 3: watch it live, but that's the thing.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I might watch it when it you know, when it's available.
- 4:06Speaker 2: I'm not gonna I'm not gonna wear no pizza for
- 4:08Speaker 2: it all but it that way, but I'm not gonna,
- 4:10Speaker 2: you know, I'm not gonna make it a moment. I'll
- 4:12Speaker 2: get to when I get to it. Sure well, and
- 4:14Speaker 2: we don't need to rehash it.
- 4:15Speaker 4: But we talked last episode about how Fury himself said
- 4:18Speaker 4: he wants to take the easiest fights for the biggest payday.
- 4:20Speaker 4: So why am I getting invested? And if that's what
- 4:23Speaker 4: you want out of your own you know, those are
- 4:25Speaker 4: your own words. You're not no longer kind of reaching
- 4:28Speaker 4: for greatness. You kind of decided that you're looking for
- 4:31Speaker 4: an exit strategy, which is perfectly fine, But that doesn't
- 4:35Speaker 4: exactly you know that.
- 4:36Speaker 3: But I'll say it like this, When you're the champ,
- 4:40Speaker 3: we don't want to hear that, you know what I mean,
- 4:42Speaker 3: When you're the chant, when you're Numeroleno, when you're the
- 4:44Speaker 3: guy people are trying the gun for, that's not a
- 4:47Speaker 3: great thing. Like I'd rather you retired than have that mindset,
- 4:51Speaker 3: because when you're the champ, where you're supposed to bring
- 4:53Speaker 3: in the best of others, you're supposed to people. We're used
- 4:57Speaker 3: to people danging deep when it comes to beating guys
- 4:59Speaker 3: who with a champ to overtake the crown. That's what
- 5:02Speaker 3: we're used to as fans, So if you're the champion,
- 5:04Speaker 3: you got that attitude.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I'd rather use retire set aside lesson my else tape
- 5:09Speaker 2: to shine.
- 5:10Speaker 4: That's fair.
- 5:11Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 5:12Speaker 4: I think for me, it's too much of an unfair
- 5:14Speaker 4: advantage to say Navettea versus Veldi too is my favorite
- 5:18Speaker 4: fight because I got to see it live, so I
- 5:20Speaker 4: got a whole new perspective on how awesome boxing is.
- 5:22Speaker 4: As if I needed even more of a reason to
- 5:24Speaker 4: love it, right, the fight itself was great, but also
- 5:27Speaker 4: it was such a great vibe being there. It was
- 5:30Speaker 4: built unofficially as Mexican Night, which made it even more fun.
- 5:33Speaker 4: I think if you take all of the live performances
- 5:35Speaker 4: I've seen in my life, of all kinds of concerts,
- 5:37Speaker 4: play as opera, ballet, you put them all together, this
- 5:41Speaker 4: boxing match is probably like top fight easy to be
- 5:43Speaker 4: honest with you, It's up there with me seeing like
- 5:46Speaker 4: The Ben live, one of my favorite bands of all time,
- 5:48Speaker 4: and also Big Frida, which actually might be the googlest
- 5:52Speaker 4: show I've ever been to, to be honest, see Brigfeeda
- 5:55Speaker 4: live was amazing, and yeah, this this fight was. It's
- 5:59Speaker 4: like a sad it's unfair to even kind of compared
- 6:01Speaker 4: just because of the situation of seeing it live. It
- 6:04Speaker 4: was just the coolest, the coolest thing I did all year.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Prob, the bigger fights you'll see memory, you'll you'll you'll
- 6:12Speaker 3: have because the big fights. Very few things replaced a
- 6:15Speaker 3: big fight, feel very few Like you know, Championship, super Bowl,
- 6:20Speaker 3: big fight, all that stuff is all very similar in
- 6:23Speaker 3: my eyes.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Anyway, do you have a most underrated fight of the year.
- 6:30Speaker 3: So we talked about this earlier, We're not gonna we
- 6:32Speaker 3: weren't gonna talk about this particular card. However, you know
- 6:36Speaker 3: Katie Taylor and Man Toronto too was I mean, it
- 6:39Speaker 3: doesn'tet talked about as much, but that that was that
- 6:42Speaker 3: was that was different and mostly not that it was underrated.
- 6:47Speaker 3: It's just not being talked about as much. That's the
- 6:50Speaker 3: biggest thing. I think that is a situation where it
- 6:54Speaker 3: wasn't wasn't just like talked about, Like we don't think
- 6:58Speaker 3: of it when we think of that night, We think
- 7:00Speaker 3: about the debacle.
- 7:01Speaker 2: We don't think about the actual the good fights that wrong,
- 7:04Speaker 2: the car.
- 7:04Speaker 3: But that's probably the most underrated looking back at the
- 7:08Speaker 3: full year. But I will say this, and I want
- 7:10Speaker 3: to get your opinion about this compared to normal years,
- 7:14Speaker 3: do you feel that we had a lackluster in terms
- 7:19Speaker 3: of compelling fights that we usually have, Like it feels
- 7:23Speaker 3: like in most years we have more compelling fights than
- 7:26Speaker 3: we did this year.
- 7:29Speaker 2: That's hard to say.
- 7:29Speaker 4: I mean, I think we had a decent year up
- 7:32Speaker 4: to good, maybe not great, but I don't know. I
- 7:34Speaker 4: think better bea versus Bevol was a big deal that
- 7:37Speaker 4: was definitely hyped up.
- 7:38Speaker 2: But how about this.
- 7:40Speaker 4: There was a big lag period between like USIK and
- 7:44Speaker 4: Better Beev, so just kind of kind of kind.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Of a dead zone.
- 7:47Speaker 4: So yeah, maybe you're right, maybe a bit of a
- 7:49Speaker 4: dead zone. I mean, I personally love Canelo versus Berlanga,
- 7:53Speaker 4: not that Berlanga was a great is a great fighter.
- 7:55Speaker 4: It was it was more fun to kind of watch
- 7:58Speaker 4: Canelo struggle against it giant, big slab of beef and
- 8:01Speaker 4: try his hardest and Berlanga taking the punishment to his credit,
- 8:04Speaker 4: and also got to see it at the Neighborhood, which
- 8:06Speaker 4: we've talked about before, the sports bar. The vibe was fantastic,
- 8:10Speaker 4: So I had a great time, But wouldn't call that,
- 8:12Speaker 4: you know, an amazing fight of his by any means
- 8:16Speaker 4: I think the biggest the biggest upset of the year
- 8:18Speaker 4: is probably Bugia getting knocked out a couple of weeks ago,
- 8:21Speaker 4: but again that was just recently. You know, there's there's
- 8:24Speaker 4: a long period where I'm kind of right thinking back
- 8:26Speaker 4: of what happened and it's kind of a dead zone.
- 8:28Speaker 2: So yeah, you're right, this year might have been a
- 8:29Speaker 2: bit blackluster, and especially when it comes to compelling fights.
- 8:33Speaker 2: So there's always gonna be fights, but the fights we
- 8:35Speaker 2: want to see and the fights that were like memorable,
- 8:38Speaker 2: there's not a whole lot of those. That's where you know,
- 8:41Speaker 2: that's kind of where we're at with it. Hopefully that
- 8:43Speaker 2: changes going forward.
- 8:44Speaker 3: But also chance Crawford hasn't fought that much, Like for
- 8:48Speaker 3: a guy's supposed to be number one or two pound
- 8:50Speaker 3: for pound or top three pound for pound, he hasn't
- 8:53Speaker 3: fought much like he'd beat Earl Spitz last.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Year or year before last. Bensley took a break. I
- 9:00Speaker 2: fought this past I want to say.
- 9:02Speaker 4: August against the Israel magimuff.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I say that was in early August or maybe
- 9:08Speaker 3: even July, but over the summer. So like fighting once
- 9:12Speaker 3: a year isn't quite it like when you're one of
- 9:15Speaker 3: the best in the sport, we got to see more
- 9:18Speaker 3: than once a year. That's not it, Like, that's not
- 9:20Speaker 3: how this goes. And I think that's part of the
- 9:22Speaker 3: problem is guys get to a certain level and they
- 9:25Speaker 3: kind of put it in cruise to So now I
- 9:27Speaker 3: know he's his situations a little bit different with the
- 9:29Speaker 3: promotion thing, and I know there's some things going on
- 9:32Speaker 3: with the future talks.
- 9:33Speaker 2: But we have to get guys were active. We have to.
- 9:36Speaker 3: It's a must because you can't be that good. And
- 9:40Speaker 3: then your one fight this year was kind of eh,
- 9:42Speaker 3: like he wasn't very impressive in the fight, Like it
- 9:45Speaker 3: was very like, all right, you're gonna win, but I'm
- 9:48Speaker 3: not really confident in this going forward. So we'll see
- 9:52Speaker 3: what happens in twenty five. But it felt like twenty
- 9:54Speaker 3: four left us kind of what a you know, uneasy
- 9:58Speaker 3: feeling like that there could have been It felt like
- 10:01Speaker 3: we didn't give as much as we could have.
- 10:03Speaker 4: But specifically, yeah, he kind of struggled going up that
- 10:07Speaker 4: weight class again, gets madermalv I agree. They'd be interesting
- 10:10Speaker 4: to see if he does get the Canelo fight. You know,
- 10:12Speaker 4: two weight classes up.
- 10:13Speaker 2: What that's going to mean for him.
- 10:14Speaker 4: But I actually wanted to bring up a fight that's
- 10:17Speaker 4: a little bit under the radar Tail Femal Lopus versus JIMMYE.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Ortiz back in February. I think a lot of fans
- 10:23Speaker 4: didn't like it. Tail won by decision and some said
- 10:26Speaker 4: Artees got rob Of course, I think it's an underrated
- 10:29Speaker 4: fight because it's a kind of a teachable moment for boxing.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Tail came in dresses like a circus ring leader with
- 10:34Speaker 4: some cardies behind him, and he's a good fighter that's
- 10:37Speaker 4: put in some excellent performances in the ring before, but
- 10:40Speaker 4: he was off his game last night that night because
- 10:42Speaker 4: Ortiz came in with some good defense, a lot of speed,
- 10:44Speaker 4: and Tayal couldn't really get any worthwhile shots and he
- 10:47Speaker 4: was frustrated and you could see it. Ortees kept his distance.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Some people said he was running too much, and I'll
- 10:52Speaker 4: go ahead and give him that, but Tayal wasn't cutting
- 10:55Speaker 4: off the ring or doing much to get through the defense,
- 10:57Speaker 4: and I think it's because he was rattled. So it
- 10:58Speaker 4: was really interesting to see a guy with that kind
- 11:01Speaker 4: of style just be thrown off his game.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Could be honest with you no, and so, and that's
- 11:06Speaker 3: what happens with great fighters. You're not gonna win every fight,
- 11:09Speaker 3: pretty right, You're not gonna win every fight one nineteen
- 11:12Speaker 3: and like well or not, that's not gonna happen. You're
- 11:14Speaker 3: gonna have close fights. You're gonna have fights or you
- 11:16Speaker 3: gotta change and kind of dig deep. You're gonna have
- 11:19Speaker 3: fights that don't go courting to plan. And when you
- 11:21Speaker 3: pull through those fights, I then make sure a better boxer.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:24Speaker 3: We've seen all the big guys in the past where hey,
- 11:28Speaker 3: sometimes you get a very close fight, close than you anticipated,
- 11:31Speaker 3: but you get better from there, at least you're supposed
- 11:33Speaker 3: to anyway. In most cases, the greats get better. Some
- 11:36Speaker 3: of the guys are you know, above average, they end
- 11:40Speaker 3: up getting exposed. But a lot of times those close
- 11:42Speaker 3: fights make you dig deep, get better, get.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Sharper going forward. I think that's what's gonna happen here.
- 11:48Speaker 2: But no, that that was a very good fight.
- 11:50Speaker 4: You're correct, Yeah, I you know, frustrating your opponent is
- 11:54Speaker 4: a ballad strategy. I've been given that tip myself before sparring,
- 11:57Speaker 4: because when a person is frustrated in the ring, that's
- 11:59Speaker 4: when they make mistakes. That's when they get caught. So
- 12:01Speaker 4: I was really surprised that tail ORed himself get thrown
- 12:04Speaker 4: off his game. And maybe I would say, or Teas
- 12:06Speaker 4: maybe outclassed him, if not out boxed THEMND that doesn't
- 12:09Speaker 4: count for something. I think that's why a lot of
- 12:10Speaker 4: people thought he should have won. But at the very leat,
- 12:13Speaker 4: I found it very interesting, a very interesting match to
- 12:16Speaker 4: analyze and see people's reaction after. So I think it's
- 12:19Speaker 4: valuable for fighters to learn from and for fancy discuss.
- 12:22Speaker 4: So I was pretty it was something I wasn't expected.
- 12:25Speaker 4: I wasn't Tailed too. I wasn't expecting tail to be
- 12:28Speaker 4: cut off guards.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 12:29Speaker 3: So the one that I'll say, when it comes to
- 12:30Speaker 3: boxers and athletes in general, there's still people, you know
- 12:34Speaker 3: what I mean, We forget that at the end of
- 12:35Speaker 3: the day.
- 12:36Speaker 2: These are every day people that got every day issues
- 12:38Speaker 2: just like us.
- 12:39Speaker 3: And if your mental is not right or if you
- 12:41Speaker 3: got something else going on, it's gonna show in the ring,
- 12:44Speaker 3: Like whenever you do. For instance, as people, we have
- 12:47Speaker 3: jobs and whatnot. If we're not all the way right
- 12:50Speaker 3: as a person, it's gonna show at work.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Unfortunately for these guys that works in a ring maybe
- 12:55Speaker 2: two twenty thousand people, and then in front of millions
- 12:57Speaker 2: on the that are watching on the world.
- 12:59Speaker 3: So that's the difference. Is like as a boxer, it happens.
- 13:03Speaker 3: You're not gonna always have your best game. Sometimes you're sidetracked.
- 13:06Speaker 2: We are human.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Things distract us, whether it's family stuff, personal stuff, all
- 13:10Speaker 3: kinds of things could happen, So it's not unusually you
- 13:14Speaker 3: just hope that you don't get sidetracked enough to where
- 13:16Speaker 3: it calls you one out right.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Well, what about Fighter of the Year. I can't think
- 13:21Speaker 4: of any reason why it wouldn't be Alexander Usik.
- 13:23Speaker 2: But what are your thoughts? It is, you sick man,
- 13:25Speaker 2: it is, and it's gotta be.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Here's the thing too, it's not that he performed well,
- 13:31Speaker 3: two performed well against I think opponents matter more than
- 13:35Speaker 3: anything when we talk about fives of the year unless
- 13:38Speaker 3: you just put together three performances in a county year
- 13:41Speaker 3: that are just like amazing. But in terms of fighting
- 13:43Speaker 3: twice in the year doing what he did, he is
- 13:45Speaker 3: the fighter of the year. I don't think it's even
- 13:47Speaker 3: really any discussion for it.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Agreed, Yeah, that's that one was easy. Yeah, No, I
- 13:53Speaker 4: think the guy's proven himself one of the greats, possibly
- 13:57Speaker 4: one of the one of the greats of all time,
- 13:59Speaker 4: if not the goat, And yeah, shout out to him,
- 14:02Speaker 4: Shout out to both of his wins, and shout out
- 14:04Speaker 4: to whatever Fury's gonna do next, maybe retirement, we'll see.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Uh. But a quick follow up on that specific fight.
- 14:11Speaker 4: You know, we mentioned last episode that this is the
- 14:13Speaker 4: first fight that would have an AI judge scoring it,
- 14:15Speaker 4: so it was just a test run and it didn't
- 14:17Speaker 4: have any effect on the results. If you listen to
- 14:19Speaker 4: episode five of you hear that neither of us were
- 14:21Speaker 4: really into this. Some fans were getting hype, commenting things like, well,
- 14:25Speaker 4: maybe this will stop corruption in boxing. The AI judge
- 14:28Speaker 4: scored the match one eighteen to one twelve for you
- 14:31Speaker 4: sick And you know, I haven't gotten a chance to
- 14:33Speaker 4: look at the Twitter and Instagram comments yet. I'm about
- 14:35Speaker 4: to do it right now, but I'm sure all the
- 14:37Speaker 4: comments were positive about this whole endeavor, and everybody was
- 14:39Speaker 4: in agreement that the robot got it right, and even
- 14:41Speaker 4: Tyson Fury was in agreement. Right like, I'm assuming that's
- 14:43Speaker 4: what I'm about to read right now, and basically basically yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 14:47Speaker 4: now fuck now. Of course, not everybody was still arguing
- 14:51Speaker 4: the results just like they always have, and some people
- 14:53Speaker 4: were Some people were speaking positively about the AI, but
- 14:56Speaker 4: lots of other us were saying things like, oh, this
- 14:58Speaker 4: this thing, the AI doesn't know box. It was absolute
- 15:02Speaker 4: badness that it's scored particular runs for you sake, et cetera,
- 15:04Speaker 4: et cetera. So this whole thing really accomplished nothing and
- 15:08Speaker 4: solved nothing, which is what we already expected.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I mean, you can't make an imperfect thing perfect, right,
- 15:15Speaker 2: So when you're judging a fight, for instance, if you
- 15:17Speaker 2: and I judge the fight, right you're in tussim in Vegas,
- 15:21Speaker 2: and we're watching the same fight and we keep score,
- 15:23Speaker 2: there's a good chance we're gonna have different.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Scores, not because we're biased or favor anything. It's just
- 15:29Speaker 3: you may see something different than I may see. So
- 15:32Speaker 3: you may see, okay, the power punches are landing. I
- 15:35Speaker 3: might see a box is more active than the other.
- 15:38Speaker 3: And it comes down to preference and what I see
- 15:40Speaker 3: with my eyes versus what you see with your eyes,
- 15:43Speaker 3: and what I deemed to be impactful and what you
- 15:46Speaker 3: need to be impactful. So for instance, we're judging a fight.
- 15:49Speaker 3: You might have one seventeen one eleven. I might have
- 15:52Speaker 3: one sixteen one twelve. That's not that far off. The
- 15:55Speaker 3: issues is. The issue is when somebody has one nineteen
- 16:00Speaker 3: nine and somebody got one twelve or sorry, one fourteen,
- 16:05Speaker 3: one twelve or one thirteen one twelve. You know, that's
- 16:09Speaker 3: what it's like, Hey man, why is it that wide
- 16:11Speaker 3: of a variance? But to be honest with you, anything
- 16:13Speaker 3: from eight to.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Four rounds and you know, anything between eight four rounds,
- 16:21Speaker 2: seven to five rounds a draw, anything in that region,
- 16:25Speaker 2: you're kind of.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, I mean, human error is always going to
- 16:31Speaker 4: be a thing, or is it not? Even hair let's say,
- 16:33Speaker 4: let's not say that human disagreements is always going to
- 16:36Speaker 4: be a thing in sports. And I don't really think
- 16:38Speaker 4: that there's any way to get past that. I don't
- 16:41Speaker 4: think we need to. I mean, yeah, mistakes will happen,
- 16:43Speaker 4: robberies could happen, but at the end of the day,
- 16:46Speaker 4: it's so you know what, I'll let me find it here.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Fury himself said, and I quote, fuck, all the compute
- 16:51Speaker 4: is keep the humans going. More jobs for humans, less
- 16:53Speaker 4: job for compute is and then he said fuck electric
- 16:56Speaker 4: calls while we're at it, which I don't know what
- 16:57Speaker 4: to befitz there, but okay whatever. So yeah, a lot
- 17:01Speaker 4: of people got super excited for this idea just because
- 17:03Speaker 4: they heard it was AI. And I don't know, man,
- 17:05Speaker 4: I'm tired of people treating AI like it's some kind
- 17:07Speaker 4: of amazing invention and that's going to save the world.
- 17:10Speaker 2: It's like a.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Faster search engine for a non boxing situation. AI does
- 17:17Speaker 3: help a lot of things, right. You can use AI
- 17:18Speaker 3: to be very impactful. However, AI can't control everything, and
- 17:22Speaker 3: I think that's what people are trying to get to.
- 17:25Speaker 3: AI controls and that's not the case. But AI came
- 17:29Speaker 3: be a pathful. I don't want AI.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Judging fights though. I don't want that because you can
- 17:33Speaker 2: program it. You can program AI to be a certain way,
- 17:35Speaker 2: and I don't want that. That's it. I think I'm
- 17:39Speaker 2: a little more down on a overall.
- 17:41Speaker 4: I think people maybe think the Blade Runner back to
- 17:43Speaker 4: the future to futures that they wanted are coming true
- 17:45Speaker 4: because of it.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I don't I don't know what.
- 17:49Speaker 4: It's like a faster search engine. You know those dudes
- 17:52Speaker 4: that think AR are the is the wave of the future.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Let's be real, guys, you just kind of want to
- 17:57Speaker 4: fuck a robot, that's all you care about him. That's cool,
- 17:58Speaker 4: like what you like, But let's be honest about a
- 18:01Speaker 4: self carry you acting like you care about integrity and
- 18:03Speaker 4: scoring boxing matches, so.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Hey, like what you like.
- 18:08Speaker 4: But anyway, so we talked about the past, let's talk
- 18:12Speaker 4: about the future. We do this show because we love
- 18:15Speaker 4: the sport, and we criticize it out of love because
- 18:17Speaker 4: we want it to be better, right of course, Jameson,
- 18:20Speaker 4: you've talked extensively about how there need to be more
- 18:22Speaker 4: fights happening throughout the year, which I agree with. There's
- 18:25Speaker 4: no boxing season like there is a baseball season. But
- 18:27Speaker 4: you made a great point last episode when you said
- 18:29Speaker 4: there should be fights every weekend during the summer, and
- 18:31Speaker 4: I'm with you, summer should an officially be boxing season.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Other than that, what do you want to see change
- 18:37Speaker 4: in twenty twenty five in the sport?
- 18:38Speaker 3: To be honest with you, I would prefer if I
- 18:41Speaker 3: mean boxing season is a good term to use, but honestly,
- 18:45Speaker 3: boxing should be year round, where every month there's a
- 18:48Speaker 3: showcase fight with a name or in or a prospect
- 18:51Speaker 3: that's either up and coming and has a name or
- 18:54Speaker 3: somebody's already established. Every month, there should not be a
- 18:56Speaker 3: month that goes by where there's not an established boxer fighting.
- 19:00Speaker 2: It should week it's criminals.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Where we go through weeks of just that should never
- 19:06Speaker 3: happen because you're taking your fans for granted. At that point,
- 19:09Speaker 3: you're basically saying, oh, the fans, when I need money,
- 19:12Speaker 3: I'll put us something on pay per view. They'll pay
- 19:14Speaker 3: for it. That ain't right, y'all need to keep us
- 19:16Speaker 3: entertained the whole year. There's enough boxers, there's enough money,
- 19:20Speaker 3: there's the promotion companies for everything to go around to
- 19:23Speaker 3: be open and active throughout the year. And I think
- 19:25Speaker 3: that's where it needs to change, is that every month
- 19:28Speaker 3: there should be at least one showcase type of fight.
- 19:31Speaker 3: I'm not saying you need Crawford Canelo every month. No,
- 19:36Speaker 3: I'm not not saying that. I'm saying that you have
- 19:38Speaker 3: to keep buzz going every month to be old. Hey,
- 19:42Speaker 3: we're February, you know, Sircuras fighting such and such.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Oh March.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Again, we're not you know, le'd say in March you
- 19:53Speaker 3: have a big fight. Apriy have a big fight. You know,
- 19:56Speaker 3: Canelo fights to May. So those are things you want
- 19:58Speaker 3: going forward, not just oh that's a fight in February.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Oh the fight in May. No, no, no, no, there's
- 20:04Speaker 3: too much time that goes by without any big time fights.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Because the thing about big time fights you get more
- 20:09Speaker 3: casual people involved, you get the regular news involved, and
- 20:12Speaker 3: that's what carries the sport. The fans always gonna be there,
- 20:15Speaker 3: but the casual, the fifty to fifty people, that's what
- 20:18Speaker 3: you need.
- 20:19Speaker 4: And the kids, the kids who who want to boxing
- 20:21Speaker 4: with their families. You know us we grew up watching.
- 20:24Speaker 4: You know, for me, who does such is with my family.
- 20:27Speaker 2: You want that vibe throughout the year, that excitement.
- 20:29Speaker 4: So that's what's gonna grow new fans.
- 20:31Speaker 2: And yeah, you're right, I mean we got to.
- 20:32Speaker 4: We've got a group of people, but it's small, possibly
- 20:35Speaker 4: getting smaller.
- 20:36Speaker 3: And yeah, that's that's not a cult. Basically, boxing fans
- 20:39Speaker 3: almost like a cult now it's not. Basically, it's not
- 20:42Speaker 3: what it used to be. And when we were, when
- 20:43Speaker 3: we were coming up, when we were growing, when we
- 20:46Speaker 3: were when we were growing up, it felt like there
- 20:52Speaker 3: was so many boxing matches on and it didn't matter
- 20:56Speaker 3: what way class right. It felt like there was always
- 20:58Speaker 3: a good match. If got every month, every six weeks,
- 21:01Speaker 3: there was somebody fighting, and it was like a big thing.
- 21:05Speaker 3: We don't have that anymore. It's just not it does
- 21:07Speaker 3: not feel the same.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm with you. There's a lot of things I
- 21:12Speaker 4: want to see change, but I have a very specific
- 21:14Speaker 4: thing I want to talk about today, if you'll indulge me. Uh,
- 21:17Speaker 4: this concept of boxers quote quitting and why that needs.
- 21:20Speaker 2: To go away.
- 21:20Speaker 4: I'll explain what I mean, but let me start off
- 21:22Speaker 4: with this. During the Navarette Aldez fight, the co main
- 21:25Speaker 4: event was between a Mexican boxer name Rails Spinoza and
- 21:28Speaker 4: a Cuban boxer name Robsa Amirez. Do you know how
- 21:30Speaker 4: that fight went down, Jamison. I don't recall off top,
- 21:34Speaker 4: so Robsa Amires. So the story is that Espinosa hit
- 21:39Speaker 4: Robsi Ameres with some elbows well through in hooks. I
- 21:41Speaker 4: saw one. I honestly don't think it was intentional. In
- 21:44Speaker 4: the sixth round, Robsi put his hand up, turned his
- 21:46Speaker 4: back to indicate he was out. The ref stopped to fight,
- 21:49Speaker 4: and Rufinoza won by tko. Reasas said he was seeing
- 21:53Speaker 4: double and he couldn't continue, right, Okay, So of course
- 21:55Speaker 4: there was a wave of comments from fans saying that
- 21:57Speaker 4: he quit one more Yeah. One particular exchange that annoyed
- 22:01Speaker 4: me was, I guess said he quit. Another person responding
- 22:04Speaker 4: and said, well, why did you get in the ring
- 22:05Speaker 4: and see how you do?
- 22:06Speaker 2: Always? Yeah.
- 22:07Speaker 4: The dude responded and said I wouldn't have quit, which
- 22:10Speaker 4: easy to say behind Instagram comments. Tough guys, sit down,
- 22:13Speaker 4: sit your ass down. But we need to stop acting
- 22:16Speaker 4: like we know what it means to be in a
- 22:17Speaker 4: boxing match to that highest level, and stop acting like
- 22:20Speaker 4: we know better than the fighters who put their health, bodies,
- 22:22Speaker 4: and yes, their lives.
- 22:23Speaker 2: On the line for the sport. You know I mentioned
- 22:27Speaker 2: they're good. The number one priority in any sports.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Health. We've got to prioritize health. Unfortunately, we've seen boxes
- 22:34Speaker 3: in the past that did not quit in time, or
- 22:37Speaker 3: they should have quit a minute or two earlier, and
- 22:39Speaker 3: they have never been the same since.
- 22:41Speaker 2: So I don't mind someone saying, hey, they don't have.
- 22:44Speaker 3: It tonight and having all their faculties the next day,
- 22:47Speaker 3: rather than somebody trying to compete when they can't end
- 22:51Speaker 3: up getting medically impacted.
- 22:52Speaker 2: That's not it. That's not cool. So I think it's
- 22:55Speaker 2: a different world in different air nowadays than in the past.
- 22:59Speaker 2: But you shouldn't have to If you're losing and you
- 23:02Speaker 2: can't defend yourself, I think it is right for you
- 23:05Speaker 2: to quit. And I don't think there's a problem with that.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it bucks you're either fighting or you're not.
- 23:11Speaker 4: And if you stop fighting for whatever reason, then the
- 23:13Speaker 4: other person wins. That's that's you know, and your opponent
- 23:16Speaker 4: choosing not to continue for any reason is one of
- 23:18Speaker 4: the ways you win. Let's speak them to the rules
- 23:20Speaker 4: so you can say, BASI remors lost you want, you
- 23:23Speaker 4: want to call him a loser if you want whatever.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Don't see he quit.
- 23:26Speaker 4: I mean he made a valid decision that he's allowed
- 23:28Speaker 4: him make for his own safety, and there's no shame
- 23:29Speaker 4: in that.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Plus he made it because he was too hurt to
- 23:32Speaker 2: keep going.
- 23:33Speaker 4: I mean him walking away was no different than getting
- 23:35Speaker 4: caught with a body shot than he couldn't get back
- 23:37Speaker 4: up from. Right.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Look here, when you when you quit in a fight,
- 23:40Speaker 3: you know your body better than anyone that's you know
- 23:43Speaker 3: where your body's about to go out on you. You
- 23:45Speaker 3: know what when your body is a strong point. You
- 23:48Speaker 3: know all these things, so when it's time, you have
- 23:52Speaker 3: to do what you gotta do. This is about your life.
- 23:55Speaker 3: This is not about one fight. This is about your life.
- 23:57Speaker 3: If you guys don't the teut, it's okay, get better,
- 24:01Speaker 3: move on, come back next time. But you gotta make
- 24:03Speaker 3: sure there's the next time. And I think fans don't
- 24:06Speaker 3: quite yet.
- 24:07Speaker 4: I mean, if you're watching a tennis match in one
- 24:09Speaker 4: of the players like sprains and ankle, you're not gonna
- 24:11Speaker 4: say they quit, right, you just pobb.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Sports fans in the dage, Sports fans in the day
- 24:17Speaker 3: and age are totally different breed.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Brother.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Okay, fine, then you shouldn't be saying that. But well
- 24:22Speaker 4: here's you're correct.
- 24:23Speaker 2: You're correct. Yeah.
- 24:24Speaker 4: I mean here's another thing too. I think we should
- 24:26Speaker 4: even stop using the term quit, because there's an official
- 24:29Speaker 4: term for what happened when a fighter stops voluntarily fighting.
- 24:32Speaker 2: The term is retired.
- 24:33Speaker 4: So if you say the fighter retired in the sixth round,
- 24:35Speaker 4: or the corner retires their fighter when they throw in
- 24:37Speaker 4: the top right.
- 24:38Speaker 2: You know, you can.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Criticize boxes for a lot of shit, but deciding to
- 24:41Speaker 4: retire for whatever reason isn't one of them. So if
- 24:44Speaker 4: they just didn't feel like fighting, they wouldn't have made
- 24:47Speaker 4: it up in that ring in the first place.
- 24:48Speaker 3: You know, witting is a tough term because the only
- 24:51Speaker 3: way actually someone quitting is if as long as if
- 24:57Speaker 3: it's not help related, right, so they just say I
- 24:59Speaker 3: don't want any more than all right, you.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Can say someone quid.
- 25:03Speaker 3: But I don't think that's unnecessarily a bad thing in boxing,
- 25:07Speaker 3: because it's the sport is way different. Like we can't
- 25:09Speaker 3: compare boxing other sports because of the brutality of it all, you.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Know what I mean. So somebody don't have this, they
- 25:15Speaker 2: got it.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Like sometimes you'll see a guy in the ring and
- 25:17Speaker 3: he just can't go no more for whatever reason, he
- 25:19Speaker 3: just can't go, whether it's in his mentals or physical
- 25:22Speaker 3: or both.
- 25:23Speaker 2: And that's okay. I don't think that's a bad thing.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Yeah, And that's another it's not like again going back
- 25:29Speaker 4: to I use a tennis analogy because there's two people.
- 25:32Speaker 4: But if a tennis player is like, is losing and
- 25:35Speaker 4: they throw their recket and they walk off, you know,
- 25:37Speaker 4: that's a forfeit and that's not really like the way
- 25:40Speaker 4: the match works. But in boxing, a person not being
- 25:43Speaker 4: able to take it anymore. That is a valid win.
- 25:45Speaker 4: You know, you get a valid dub if your opponent
- 25:47Speaker 4: just can't continue. So I don't see why there's a
- 25:50Speaker 4: reason to add on to this and say, oh, he quit,
- 25:52Speaker 4: he sucks.
- 25:53Speaker 2: I wouldn't have done that.
- 25:54Speaker 4: And yeah, other comments are like, well, fighters have fought
- 25:57Speaker 4: with a broken jaw, they fought with sprayed rives, and
- 26:00Speaker 4: that you can't tell somebody you know that they need
- 26:03Speaker 4: to push through an injury when they can't.
- 26:05Speaker 3: What they tell you they can't. These are the same
- 26:08Speaker 3: people who call out sick when they got two coughs
- 26:10Speaker 3: in a row. Yeah, who call out sick when they
- 26:15Speaker 3: get a paper cut. These are the same people who
- 26:18Speaker 3: go home early when they have an OWI okay, So
- 26:22Speaker 3: you got to remember that. You gotta understand. These are
- 26:24Speaker 3: the same folks that are saying these things. So that's
- 26:28Speaker 3: why I don't like, don't be the tough guy on
- 26:31Speaker 3: online but at work all because you got PTO and
- 26:34Speaker 3: you have a little headache, you're going home at eleven
- 26:36Speaker 3: am instead of toughing it out.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Not trying to hear that agreed.
- 26:40Speaker 4: I mean I said before, I've done a lot of sparring.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I've gotten my ass kicked. I've had to push through.
- 26:45Speaker 4: But also I'm in a gym with guys that are
- 26:47Speaker 4: going like sixty percent and don't want to knock you out.
- 26:50Speaker 4: So I would never say, oh, well, ro basically for
- 26:52Speaker 4: me to sure it kept going, you know, this person
- 26:54Speaker 4: should have fullen through a broken job. Absolutely not, And
- 26:56Speaker 4: I especially don't want to hear it from anybody that
- 26:58Speaker 4: hasn't gotten their ass kicked by a staring partner.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Right or if you've never been around the gym, if
- 27:03Speaker 2: you've never been around open gym, I don't want to
- 27:04Speaker 2: hear it. Absolutely. So that's the thing I think.
- 27:07Speaker 4: I think it's fair to say that when it comes
- 27:09Speaker 4: to our criticisms for you know, to make the sport better,
- 27:12Speaker 4: you kind of talk about the business, the industry. I
- 27:13Speaker 4: talk about the fandom and how I want fans to be.
- 27:16Speaker 2: To be better. So yeah, I mean, let's let's stop
- 27:19Speaker 2: shaming these folks.
- 27:20Speaker 4: You know, they got up there at a pro match
- 27:22Speaker 4: in that ring, which it takes balls to get in
- 27:23Speaker 4: that ring in the first place.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Let's be real about it. Oh absolutely, absolutely.
- 27:28Speaker 4: So yeah, So twenty twenty five boxing boxing fans, let's
- 27:33Speaker 4: be better. Let's uh, let's progress, Let's be better versions
- 27:36Speaker 4: of ourselves. So speaking of people that become better versions
- 27:41Speaker 4: of theirselves, let's move on to our pugilism segment, where
- 27:44Speaker 4: we discuss a boxing movie, TV show, or documentary. I'm
- 27:47Speaker 4: very excited about today's episode because we usually talk about
- 27:50Speaker 4: movies that are a few years old and a couple
- 27:52Speaker 4: of decades old in one case, but this time we're
- 27:54Speaker 4: talking about a new movie that isn't theaters right now.
- 27:58Speaker 4: The fire Inside premiered on Christmas Day, though my myamc
- 28:02Speaker 4: head screening is starting on the twenty four, so I
- 28:03Speaker 4: got to see it on Christmas Eve. Shout out to
- 28:06Speaker 4: movie theaters employees. By the way, a lot of people
- 28:08Speaker 4: don't know that theaters are up in three hundred and
- 28:09Speaker 4: sixty five days a year.
- 28:10Speaker 2: That's right. So yeah, my two favorite.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Working class heroes are bartenders and movie theater employees. Jamison,
- 28:16Speaker 4: did you get a chance to check out this movie?
- 28:18Speaker 2: I actually did? I actually did you know? Ironically, my
- 28:22Speaker 2: firestick went out, so I had to go through other
- 28:23Speaker 2: means to watch it, but we didn't watch it.
- 28:26Speaker 3: It was a very interesting movie. I certain things I
- 28:29Speaker 3: was not aware of, but it's the similar story of
- 28:33Speaker 3: most boxers, right, like you grew up in a very
- 28:36Speaker 3: rough area. In this case it was Flint, which is
- 28:38Speaker 3: one of the worst per capital places that grow up
- 28:40Speaker 3: in this country, and you kind of have a lot
- 28:44Speaker 3: of struggles and you turn those struggles into your fuel
- 28:47Speaker 3: for boxing, and next thing you know, you're in this
- 28:50Speaker 3: case during the Olympics, you know, and you you know,
- 28:53Speaker 3: create a craft and you go from there. But that's
- 28:55Speaker 3: kind of how it's very interesting that we don't see
- 28:59Speaker 3: a lot of box was coming from the suburbs, right
- 29:01Speaker 3: you know, have a lot of boxers coming up in
- 29:03Speaker 3: three car garage homes. It's just not very This just
- 29:06Speaker 3: doesn't have that much Like most year boxers still that
- 29:08Speaker 3: they had to have a certain background to have that
- 29:11Speaker 3: kind of energy and fuel. But this is a very
- 29:14Speaker 3: It was a better movie than I expected. I think
- 29:17Speaker 3: the acting was on point. Most of the boxing scenes
- 29:20Speaker 3: wererong point.
- 29:21Speaker 4: It was.
- 29:22Speaker 2: It wasn't bad. It wasn't bad at all.
- 29:26Speaker 4: Actually, before I should have gave a little bit more
- 29:29Speaker 4: of an intro. The movie is about a real boxer
- 29:31Speaker 4: named Clarissa Shields. The film is the true story of
- 29:34Speaker 4: how she won a gold medal for women's boxing in
- 29:36Speaker 4: twenty twelve, which is the first year women's boxing was
- 29:38Speaker 4: even allowed in the Olympics. Ryan Destiny is the actors
- 29:42Speaker 4: who played Clarissa Shields, and she did.
- 29:44Speaker 2: An awesome job.
- 29:45Speaker 4: I really liked this movie, so it is something very
- 29:48Speaker 4: interesting that I wasn't expecting. It's it's not a spoiler
- 29:51Speaker 4: because the trailer basically gives it away. Clarissa actually won
- 29:54Speaker 4: two Olympic medals back to back twenty twelve London twenty
- 29:57Speaker 4: sixteen reel, and the winning of gold medal is usually
- 30:00Speaker 4: the triumphant climax of the standard sports.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Film, but none of this one.
- 30:04Speaker 4: Clarissa winning her first metal happens like two thirds of
- 30:07Speaker 4: the way through the movie. The rest of the movie
- 30:09Speaker 4: is everything that happened immediately afterward. You know you mentioned
- 30:12Speaker 4: she's from Flint and grew up poor as hell. After
- 30:15Speaker 4: winning the medals, she thought that her life was going
- 30:16Speaker 4: to change dramatically. She was going to take care of
- 30:18Speaker 4: her family, put them in a big house. But that
- 30:20Speaker 4: didn't happen because she wasn't getting sponsorship deals with anybody
- 30:23Speaker 4: because nobody really cared about women's boxing back then. Plus
- 30:26Speaker 4: she was told she was abrasive and not media friendly.
- 30:30Speaker 4: In interview, she said she liked boxing because she liked
- 30:32Speaker 4: beating people up, and her white media handlers were like, hey,
- 30:34Speaker 4: you can't say stuff like.
- 30:36Speaker 2: That, right.
- 30:37Speaker 4: They try to get her to put on makeup to
- 30:38Speaker 4: quote improve her image. So I think ultimately it's a
- 30:42Speaker 4: boxing movie kind of on the surface, I think it
- 30:44Speaker 4: cares about boxing, like forty percent, and the rest of
- 30:47Speaker 4: it is a story of how growing up under the
- 30:49Speaker 4: weight of generational poverty's suit like a vortex. It sucks
- 30:53Speaker 4: everything in and not even winning a fucking Olympic gold
- 30:56Speaker 4: medal can ninue you out of it. So I was
- 30:58Speaker 4: really impressed by that, to be honest with you, No,
- 31:00Speaker 4: it was cool.
- 31:01Speaker 2: They intertwined both her personal life in the boxing part
- 31:03Speaker 2: really well. You know. The boxing coach was also did
- 31:07Speaker 2: a very good job. It was cool.
- 31:09Speaker 3: I liked it.
- 31:10Speaker 2: I enjoyed it a lot. But also there's a lot
- 31:13Speaker 2: of these stories that don't end this way, right.
- 31:15Speaker 3: You've got a lot of people growing up in very,
- 31:17Speaker 3: very tough places with similar coaches, and it doesn't work
- 31:20Speaker 3: out this way. It usually goes the other way, you know,
- 31:22Speaker 3: usually goes with the way of not working out and
- 31:25Speaker 3: unfortunately other things happened.
- 31:27Speaker 2: So no, it was cool. You know, it was definitely
- 31:30Speaker 2: a good movie, a better movie than expected.
- 31:32Speaker 3: I don't know how I was gonna do in the
- 31:33Speaker 3: box office, but it was well, the movie did the
- 31:36Speaker 3: job off of it that way, the movie did the job.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I was looking up. So the box office is
- 31:42Speaker 2: it's not great. You know, it is a low budget movie.
- 31:44Speaker 4: It's like twelve million budget, but I think it did
- 31:48Speaker 4: like five millions so far since it premierre to Christmas,
- 31:51Speaker 4: which is still early. If it doesn't make its money
- 31:54Speaker 4: back in theaters, it might make it back on you know,
- 31:56Speaker 4: on disc streaming whatever.
- 31:59Speaker 3: The movies make themselves back overseas. That's how it makes
- 32:02Speaker 3: the money back. So it'll if it did finally open
- 32:04Speaker 3: a weekend, it'll be fine. But yeah, it's it's tough
- 32:08Speaker 3: too because women's boxing is still not looked at like that.
- 32:12Speaker 3: For in terms of the situation. However, if she would
- 32:15Speaker 3: have did this coming up now, she definitely wouldn't have
- 32:18Speaker 3: been poor. There would have been a bunch of small
- 32:19Speaker 3: companies offering deals for social media stuff, all kind of stuff.
- 32:23Speaker 3: But again, it shows you just the time back in
- 32:25Speaker 3: twenty twelve, there wasn't you know, the thought process and
- 32:29Speaker 3: ideas were different than they were thirteen years later.
- 32:32Speaker 4: Sure, but also yes, I agree with you. And also
- 32:36Speaker 4: if she came up now, she would have more sponship
- 32:38Speaker 4: because she was the one that made this happen, you
- 32:41Speaker 4: know what I mean. It's like it wouldn't have happened
- 32:42Speaker 4: about her, So it's like it's like a back to
- 32:44Speaker 4: the future thing where you kind of change your own paths.
- 32:47Speaker 4: So she definitely opened the path for a lot of
- 32:50Speaker 4: other female boxers. I mean the movie too, it brings
- 32:53Speaker 4: up the pay gaps between male and female athletes. Yes, yes,
- 32:56Speaker 4: it's socially conscious, race conscious. All the performances are excellent. Yeah,
- 33:01Speaker 4: I was really impressed. I think the best thing I
- 33:03Speaker 4: can say about this movie is that it would be
- 33:05Speaker 4: a good watch even for people who actively dislike sports movies.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Facts facts, fact.
- 33:10Speaker 4: Honestly I speak, which I don't love them myself. I
- 33:12Speaker 4: don't dislike her of voice sports movies, but a lot
- 33:14Speaker 4: of them are so by the numbers, you know, it
- 33:16Speaker 4: takes a lot for one to stick out in my mind.
- 33:18Speaker 2: But it's one of those movies that it tells a story,
- 33:24Speaker 2: so the common person could watch it and not be
- 33:27Speaker 2: like put off by. It wasn't too boxy, you know
- 33:30Speaker 2: what I mean? It was just right. It was just right.
- 33:33Speaker 4: I think it does a good job telling the story,
- 33:35Speaker 4: and no matter of the sport, if she was a
- 33:36Speaker 4: baseball player or what a basketball player, I think I
- 33:39Speaker 4: think it works so pu It feels like the kind
- 33:42Speaker 4: of old school movie you might catch on a TV
- 33:44Speaker 4: on a lazy Sunday afternoon, mid budget. It's after lunch.
- 33:47Speaker 4: You sit on your clienter, crack a beer, surface channels
- 33:50Speaker 4: watch this time all the time. You know, there's particular
- 33:53Speaker 4: movies like those that make you feel a certain way,
- 33:55Speaker 4: And I'm glad this exists. We need more mid to
- 33:57Speaker 4: low budget movies.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 34:00Speaker 4: We have a scale of four gloves, so I think
- 34:03Speaker 4: I'd give it three and a half gloves.
- 34:04Speaker 2: What about you? I go three O three. I'm not.
- 34:09Speaker 2: I thought that.
- 34:11Speaker 3: They could have went more into what happened after the
- 34:14Speaker 3: second over the metal.
- 34:16Speaker 2: I think that that could have been a part of
- 34:17Speaker 2: it more. For me, I kind of wanted to wait more,
- 34:19Speaker 2: and it felt like they spent so much time on
- 34:22Speaker 2: the the Olympic situation in that process, and then also
- 34:27Speaker 2: after the first Olympics, Like how nothing changed? Like would
- 34:31Speaker 2: I would have liked to see more detail now, But
- 34:33Speaker 2: it's all good. I mean, it is what it is.
- 34:35Speaker 3: But I think three is fine. I cant talking to
- 34:38Speaker 3: three point twenty five and I think that probably be
- 34:40Speaker 3: my hottest if I had to go.
- 34:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I was probably more impressed than you were, but
- 34:45Speaker 4: I did. I will say I was surprised that they
- 34:47Speaker 4: didn't go into the second Metal win at all. So
- 34:51Speaker 4: but I also a shout out to Brian Tyree Henry
- 34:54Speaker 4: who plays Claria's coach Jason Crutchfield. That guy's just awesome.
- 34:58Speaker 4: I love seeing him anytime he shows up. Know, he's
- 35:00Speaker 4: great in the movie, but that's pretty much expected from
- 35:02Speaker 4: him at this point. But Brian Terry Henry Henry, who
- 35:05Speaker 4: most people know is paper boy from Atlanta.
- 35:08Speaker 2: But yeah, no, I had a good time.
- 35:10Speaker 4: You know. I'm glad I went to see it in
- 35:11Speaker 4: the in the theaters and so I saw that Christmas
- 35:15Speaker 4: Eve And just a quick shout out to Sonic the
- 35:17Speaker 4: Hitchhog three, which I saw the Frighten before Christmas.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Awesome movie as well. That was like that.
- 35:21Speaker 4: I'll give that like five blocks, because did you grow
- 35:24Speaker 4: up watching or playing Sonic Games.
- 35:26Speaker 3: When Gear and Sega Genesis all that. I did not
- 35:30Speaker 3: see the movie, but I definitely grew up playing it
- 35:31Speaker 3: for sure.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I was laughing.
- 35:34Speaker 4: I gotta say I went like after nine so that
- 35:36Speaker 4: all the babies would be in bed.
- 35:38Speaker 2: But it was a Christmas weekend.
- 35:40Speaker 4: Was a good time because I did Sonic three, The
- 35:42Speaker 4: Fire Inside and then nos Fara two on Christmas Day.
- 35:44Speaker 4: So yeah, I love going to the movie. So it's
- 35:47Speaker 4: it's actually really cool to go into a movie theater
- 35:49Speaker 4: knowing that I was going to talk about this for
- 35:51Speaker 4: this show, right right, right, So you know, more boxing movies,
- 35:55Speaker 4: you know, please, let's let's have them, even if they
- 35:57Speaker 4: don't do well.
- 35:57Speaker 2: You gotta have lower budget, mid budget movies. Got to
- 36:00Speaker 2: pad that out.
- 36:00Speaker 4: Not everything can be big budget superhero action thing.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 36:05Speaker 4: So yeah, So for a final segment, we usually do
- 36:09Speaker 4: a mail back question from the audience, but I wanted
- 36:10Speaker 4: to change it up a little today and try something
- 36:12Speaker 4: different as an experiment. So right, I still do have
- 36:15Speaker 4: a couple of mail back questions to get through, and
- 36:16Speaker 4: I would encourage y'all to keep sending him in. We'll
- 36:18Speaker 4: plug where you can reach this at the end. But
- 36:20Speaker 4: for today, I actually wanted to ask my own question
- 36:22Speaker 4: that I'd like my co host to answer.
- 36:24Speaker 2: I've said it many times before.
- 36:26Speaker 4: I love boxing, but I don't consider myself an expert,
- 36:28Speaker 4: and there's a lot I've been learning thanks to the show. Right, Jamison,
- 36:31Speaker 4: You're the expert here, and there's something I realized I
- 36:32Speaker 4: don't really understand, and it was inspired by the movie.
- 36:36Speaker 4: So just to set this up, Clarissashield is one of
- 36:39Speaker 4: four fighters male or female to be an undisputed champion
- 36:43Speaker 4: in two different way classes. So there's only four people
- 36:45Speaker 4: that have done it. One of the others is one
- 36:47Speaker 4: of our favorite fighters, Bud Crawford, so shout out to him.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Yep.
- 36:51Speaker 4: So just really quickly for the folks who don't know
- 36:52Speaker 4: what it means to be undisputed. There are four different
- 36:54Speaker 4: boxing commissions and each one has their own belt, WBOWBA, WBC, IBF.
- 36:59Speaker 4: That's why see boxers with the shitloatle belts that look
- 37:01Speaker 4: different or different colors. There's four belts for each weight class,
- 37:05Speaker 4: and if a fighter gets all four of those belts
- 37:06Speaker 4: in the same weight class, they become.
- 37:07Speaker 2: The undisputed chip.
- 37:08Speaker 4: So I guess one way I can describe it as
- 37:12Speaker 4: becoming undisputed is like getting an oscar, and then being
- 37:14Speaker 4: undisputed in two weight classes is like getting an egot,
- 37:18Speaker 4: because both are hard, but one is so difficult that
- 37:21Speaker 4: only a handful of people have ever done it. Ever,
- 37:23Speaker 4: So the question that I've never really understood when a
- 37:27Speaker 4: fighter becomes an undisputed champ for a particular weight class,
- 37:30Speaker 4: how do those belts get broken up again and end
- 37:32Speaker 4: up with different fighters? Because if I'm undisputed and people
- 37:35Speaker 4: keep challenging me for all four of my belts and
- 37:37Speaker 4: I wash every challenger, I'll be undisputed until I retire.
- 37:40Speaker 4: But I know that's not the only way for the
- 37:42Speaker 4: belts to be up for grabs. So how do undisputed
- 37:44Speaker 4: champs go from having all four belts to ending up
- 37:47Speaker 4: with only three or two? I've never really.
- 37:50Speaker 2: What's happening now more than ever, is that guys are
- 37:54Speaker 2: basically relinquishing belts for different reasons.
- 37:57Speaker 3: Part of the sanction fees to say I don't want
- 38:00Speaker 3: to I don't want to be I don't want to
- 38:02Speaker 3: pay three hundred grand for this or how much it costs.
- 38:04Speaker 3: I remember Floyd being very adamant, like, hey, why am
- 38:07Speaker 3: I paying an extra five hundred plus grand for this belt.
- 38:10Speaker 2: I don't need the belt. Belt doesn't find me. Blah
- 38:12Speaker 2: blah blah.
- 38:12Speaker 3: Now does he have the extra money, of course, but
- 38:15Speaker 3: from a business standpoint, you technically don't need it. And
- 38:19Speaker 3: also every fight is different, right, so before the fight
- 38:22Speaker 3: you would ree upon what's at state for the fight.
- 38:26Speaker 3: There's been fights as weird as it sounds, where not
- 38:28Speaker 3: all the belts have been on the table. I don't
- 38:31Speaker 3: know why that is. That's that's always been odd to me.
- 38:33Speaker 3: But it'll always be like, yeah, this fight's not for
- 38:35Speaker 3: all the belts, just for the WBA. I'm like, ah,
- 38:38Speaker 3: this doesn't make sense, but.
- 38:39Speaker 2: It's always to me. Yeah.
- 38:42Speaker 3: But every federation has like its own top ten list,
- 38:44Speaker 3: so they'll be like, hey, the guarantee challenger for the IBF,
- 38:48Speaker 3: you gotta fight something.
- 38:49Speaker 2: They do fight.
- 38:49Speaker 3: It's only for the IBF belt, it's not for all
- 38:51Speaker 3: the belts. So that's always weird. I'm not quite sure
- 38:55Speaker 3: why that is, but every fight has its own thing.
- 38:58Speaker 3: I always like when guys say, know what, forget about
- 39:01Speaker 3: everything's on the table, you want to come beat me.
- 39:04Speaker 3: I'm a big fan of that. But once you know
- 39:06Speaker 3: the business side that it cost so much money for
- 39:08Speaker 3: these federations and we're not for these belts. I understand
- 39:12Speaker 3: why a lot of guys are liquish it, or a
- 39:13Speaker 3: lot of guys say, hey, you know what, I'm gonna
- 39:16Speaker 3: chill this year in fighting. Y'all can do it out.
- 39:18Speaker 3: So if you don't meet your mandatory challenger, you relinquish
- 39:21Speaker 3: the belt, and then the next two guys end up
- 39:24Speaker 3: fighting or wherever they a point, ends up fighting for
- 39:26Speaker 3: that belt.
- 39:27Speaker 4: So when you mentioned the fees, does that mean if
- 39:29Speaker 4: you win a belt you got to pay like for it?
- 39:32Speaker 4: Holy shit, that part I did not know at all.
- 39:34Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, you gotta pay. You gotta pay fees.
- 39:37Speaker 3: So when you go to fight, you got to put
- 39:40Speaker 3: up a certain amount to fight for that belt. So
- 39:44Speaker 3: that's why in the past you've heard guys saying, now
- 39:47Speaker 3: I'm cool, all relinquished. I don't even want to pay
- 39:50Speaker 3: the extra just for that. It's kind of odd, but
- 39:52Speaker 3: everybody got to make their money. So that's why you've
- 39:54Speaker 3: heard in the past where Floyd be like, I don't
- 39:57Speaker 3: need the belts. I know we know who, we know
- 40:00Speaker 3: the records, et cetera, et cetera.
- 40:01Speaker 2: So that happens wrong often not, but a lot of
- 40:03Speaker 2: times is somehow will move up and wait.
- 40:06Speaker 3: Right, so let's say you're at one thirty five and
- 40:09Speaker 3: you're undisputed there, Well you're moving up to one forty,
- 40:12Speaker 3: so you leave all the belts down there because you're
- 40:14Speaker 3: you're going up.
- 40:16Speaker 2: So that also happens wrong.
- 40:17Speaker 4: Often not too Okay, Okay, so if you leave all
- 40:19Speaker 4: four belts behind them, then again, whoever, whoever commissions all.
- 40:24Speaker 2: The federations figure out who who fights for him? Okay. Yeah.
- 40:28Speaker 4: The thing that did confuse me the most, like I said,
- 40:30Speaker 4: is I've got all four belts, but I'm fighting a
- 40:31Speaker 4: guy just for the IBF, which whatever.
- 40:34Speaker 2: However, I'm not a fan of either. I think it's
- 40:37Speaker 2: a chubb.
- 40:37Speaker 4: But yeah, so then if I just refuse to fight
- 40:40Speaker 4: him for whatever reason, then I make h the belt.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 40:42Speaker 3: You got to remember we had the Cold War before
- 40:45Speaker 3: with all these promotion companies for the longest times, so
- 40:47Speaker 3: I remember there was times where guys weren't fighting guys
- 40:49Speaker 3: because they were you know, Golden Boy, you know, et cetera,
- 40:54Speaker 3: et cetera. And if your promotion company did not get
- 40:56Speaker 3: along gold want top ranked, that whole colde War lasted
- 40:59Speaker 3: over a decade, you know what I mean. So if
- 41:03Speaker 3: you got a top rank and a Golden Boy guy,
- 41:05Speaker 3: if one has too and the other one has too,
- 41:08Speaker 3: you basically see in fights between all top ranked guys
- 41:11Speaker 3: and all Golden Boy guys by each other.
- 41:13Speaker 2: So you know that's what a lot of that happened
- 41:15Speaker 2: as well in the past. Okay, thank you.
- 41:18Speaker 4: That's something I was having difficulty, you know, doing research on.
- 41:21Speaker 4: I tried looking up online, but my search results weren't
- 41:24Speaker 4: very helpful.
- 41:24Speaker 2: And I'm I'm.
- 41:25Speaker 4: Always willing to admit that if I don't know something,
- 41:27Speaker 4: you know, I'm not trying to be here pretending I
- 41:29Speaker 4: know everything. So I really appreciate expanding my knowledge based
- 41:32Speaker 4: but also for any of the listeners that didn't know
- 41:34Speaker 4: any of this, So absolutely thank you.
- 41:37Speaker 2: So how about we get out of here and.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Started joining twenty twenty five?
- 41:40Speaker 2: Absolutely? Yeah?
- 41:41Speaker 3: Where can people find you on social media at the
- 41:44Speaker 3: Jamison on Twitter and on Instagram. I'll be around always
- 41:47Speaker 3: fun being on Twitter answering questions and whatnot. And hope
- 41:50Speaker 3: everybody's saved this upcoming New year and hopefully we have
- 41:54Speaker 3: some really good fights, you know, I mean that's what
- 41:56Speaker 3: we're here for.
- 41:56Speaker 2: We're here to make sure we get mimorable and.
- 41:58Speaker 3: Be able to talk about it casual conversation like damn, hey,
- 42:01Speaker 3: do you see that find on ESPN?
- 42:03Speaker 2: Oh, damn, hey, do you see that fight on Fox?
- 42:05Speaker 2: Or hey? You know hey or hey, it's about to
- 42:08Speaker 2: come on right now. Make sure you got the you know,
- 42:10Speaker 2: the app open or whatever. We need more of that
- 42:12Speaker 2: if you feel like that was missing this year. Yeah, no,
- 42:15Speaker 2: I agree. I mean the sport is very exciting for me,
- 42:17Speaker 2: but I want more people to be able to talk
- 42:19Speaker 2: to talk to you about it what our tank Davis
- 42:24Speaker 2: has to fight more like you're one of the faces
- 42:27Speaker 2: of the sport.
- 42:28Speaker 3: You're an exciting fire when you when you put guys away.
- 42:31Speaker 3: We got to see you more. It can't just be
- 42:33Speaker 3: once a year. You gotta be more active. We gotta
