- 0:00We welcome you back to Bears Smokehouse Barbecue here in downtown Hartford for the Yukon
- 0:04Men's Hockey Coaches Show. He's Yukon Men's Ice Hockey head coach Mike Kavanaugh,
- 0:09Adam Jardino with you. Thanks to John Ashmead here on site, and big
- 0:14thanks to Bryant back in the studio in Winston Salem. So we dove into
- 0:19the main series and now this past weekend against number seventeen unh it was in
- 0:24some ways a similar script dropped the first game win the second. We won't
- 0:31harp too much on Friday, but what was the general sense of how that
- 0:35the third period went in that one? Well? Not well? Yeah,
- 0:38I mean I thought we were playing okay. I wasn't crazy about our energy
- 0:44Friday night, but we were still playing well enough to win the hockey game.
- 0:47We actually put their goal in, went off Andrew Lucas's stick, and
- 0:53we had two great chances to tie the game to start the third period.
- 0:57I liked our first few shifts and then you eh scored kind of on an
- 1:03unfortunate goal. I thought it hit Ethan in the head and he lost it,
- 1:10and then they just got two other quick ones. Right after that,
- 1:11they scored three goals with like in a minute and ten seconds, and that
- 1:15was pretty much a game. We didn't have a lot you know, pushback
- 1:22after that. So it was frustrating because you know, we're playing at home
- 1:26and we had a great crowd there and I thought we were building some momentum
- 1:33after the last Saturday, and it was frustrating to lose that game Friday.
- 1:37But I was really proud again of the effort yesterday because you know, five
- 1:41minutes into the game yesterday, Hudson Schandor gets thrown out of the game for
- 1:46a five minute major. We were able to kill that. I thought our
- 1:49penalty kill was outstanding yesterday. Different guys stepped up. We got a couple
- 1:53of goals, like Tristan Fraser steps up and takes Hudson's spot on that line
- 1:57and makes a really high end play to Chase Bradley for our second goal.
- 2:06So a lot of guys stepped up. Penalty kill was excellent. We blocked
- 2:09a lot of shots and it was a well earned, you know, road
- 2:14victory for us yesterday. One last thought on the Friday game before we focus
- 2:19more on yesterday. So with that flurry the three goals in about a minute.
- 2:23Were there any of those three that you looked at and you just thought,
- 2:29guys, that's one we just can't give up. I mean, that's
- 2:31hard to say. I mean there were a lot of mistakes with those goals,
- 2:42you know, so I don't know if there was one in particular.
- 2:45I Mean, the thing about it is I always say, you can't let
- 2:49one mistake turn into two, turn into three. And that was the thing
- 2:52that bothered me. It wasn't so much that we gave up that second goal.
- 2:57It was we let it compound and basically, you know, put us
- 3:06in a situation where it's really hard to come back and win a hockey game.
- 3:08And this league, when you're down four to nothing with sixteen minutes ago
- 3:12on the third, I don't care who you're playing in this league, it's
- 3:15really hard to come back from that. Mike Kavanaugh joins us here on the
- 3:20Yukon Men's Ice Hockey Coaches Show, Adam Giordino with you live at Bears Smokehouse
- 3:23Barbecue here in downtown Hartford. So we do jump into yesterday going on the
- 3:30road to the Whittemore Center. You had talked about UMass being the Olympic size
- 3:38sheet of ice, and the ice of the Wittemore Center used to be Olympic
- 3:42size and now it's a little bit not anymore. Okay, it's probably uh,
- 3:46I don't know if it's eighty five feet wide. It might be a
- 3:50touch wider than that, but it's not much. The corners are a little
- 3:54deeper. It's like Boston College where the corners are a little deeper. But
- 4:00no, it's a much more manageable rink these days. And when you talk
- 4:04about just the slight variances BCU mass unh that those changes largely fall on the
- 4:14defenseman. That's where it would affect you a little bit more as a new
- 4:16team coming in. No, I think it's everybody. I mean it's not
- 4:19just defenceman. I mean in the offensive zone, if you beat a guy
- 4:24in a small rink, you got a chance to score a goal. So
- 4:28it's our forwards, you know, coming back. It's playing inside the dots
- 4:33and playing in you know, protecting the good ice. So I don't think
- 4:36it's unique to defenceman a large sheet. I think it affects everybody because your
- 4:42forwards have to four check, so when you have to cover more ground,
- 4:45it's a lot harder to for check. It was Scorelas going into the second
- 4:48period, and then Ryan Taddle got you on the board just a minute thirty
- 4:53six in on the feed from Mattthew would where is his game just continued to
- 4:58grow this year Ryan Tattle's. I would say he and Tristan Frasier from last
- 5:04year to this year have probably taken the biggest jumps on our team. Well,
- 5:09there's a few, you know, I know, I think you have
- 5:11Jack Pascucci on later right. Yes, he's really playing great hockey for us
- 5:15now. But Ryan Taddle in particular, he was out there at the end
- 5:20of the game last night taking both face offs because he was our best face
- 5:24off guy last night. So this is not a role he had played in
- 5:28earlier in his career, but did a fantastic job last night. And I
- 5:32just really like the way his game's trending today. On the season, he's
- 5:38about a fifty percent face off guy, but those numbers have been trending in
- 5:42the right direction. So how does a player improve that particular skill over the
- 5:47course of the season. Well, we've certainly put more emphasis on it,
- 5:50and you know, Mike Pereira is kind of heading up our face offs,
- 5:56and he's done a really nice job with showing the kids different video and strengths
- 6:01of other players, but spending a lot of time with our players after practice
- 6:08working on different techniques as well. So that goal by Tattle, it's followed
- 6:13up a little bit later with a goal by Chase Bradley and the media at
- 6:18large we'll be talking very likely to Chase tomorrow in the run up to Connecticut
- 6:23Ice. So for Chase, I guess similar question. He's a Detroit Red
- 6:28Wings product and it just seems like his trajectory has been going in the right
- 6:30direct since he stepped foot on campus. It has. He's, you know,
- 6:35probably our most physical player. He skates really well. It was a
- 6:41great draft pick by Detroit, especially in the seventh round. I think he
- 6:45went. He's a guy that has a really legitimate chance to play at the
- 6:50next level, I believe with his skill set. So and for us,
- 6:55he's leading our team and scoring and he just plays a sad owned two hundred
- 7:00foot hockey game and he's invaluable to us, that's for sure. We talked
- 7:06about our Sinisor Jeb on the Saturday game against Maine helping bring you guys back.
- 7:14So then yesterday against unh he's put into a similar situation. Not must
- 7:17win, but you guys want to win that game surely, So what did
- 7:23he specifically show you? Yet again, in another start, I thought he
- 7:27was square to the puck. I thought he was very efficient. You know,
- 7:32when our city's playing really well, he plays within his posts. He
- 7:35doesn't get out into that white ice, and I thought he did that very
- 7:41effectively yesterday. He killed a lot of plays. You know where it gets
- 7:46dicey sometimes in front of your own net for a goaltender is when you're allowing
- 7:51second and third chance opportunities and you don't control that first rebound and the other
- 7:57team's getting wax at it. And he didn't excellent job of killing plays yesterday.
- 8:03Is it hard to deep program a goalie that likes to be a little
- 8:05bit more Uh, I don't know, artistic in some ways where it's hey,
- 8:11you're at your best when you are in the crease rather than being a
- 8:13little more frea glowing. You know, it's a good question. I would
- 8:20say that if it's working for you and you're getting results, then fine.
- 8:26Like Dominic Castick, I mean, he was very unique in the way he
- 8:28played. I think if you're not getting results, then yeah, you got
- 8:33to make a change. So I was saying that that's where I think our
- 8:37ciny when he was struggling this year, it was really due to the fact
- 8:43that he's probably playing more outside his posts and right now, Like a great
- 8:48example yesterday was, you know, we gave up a two on one and
- 8:52their guy came in point blank and he held his feet and made a glove
- 8:56safe, you know, without guessing. So that's when you're really locked thin
- 9:00and seeing the puck. Well, we'll continue on with this conversation in a
- 9:03moment. Friday afternoon, it's day one of Connecticut Ice. We'll talk more
- 9:09about that in the next segment. At the Excel Center, yukon Sacred Heart,
- 9:13they're the opening act, face off at four oh five. Coverage on
- 9:16our flagship begins at three o'clock. A full one hour pregame show on the
- 9:20flagship Network. Coverage begins at three forty five with the Heart Auto Group Rink side show
