Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: I am not a perfectionist when I don't generalize it.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: I am a perfectionist in certain areas of my life.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like when it comes to my photography and photos, and I'm very much a perfectionist in that aspect of my life.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just fine at definition, but overall I'm not a perfectionist.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like I'm okay with things being like a little messy gives life a little edge.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 0:25[SPEAKER_01]: A person who refuses to accept any standard sort of perfection.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: Sit out again a person who refuses to accept any standard short of perfection.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_01]: See even perfection is like what one person considers perfect I think yeah, I think we can just I guess we don't really need a definition I mean yeah people know a perfectionist is so
- 0:50[SPEAKER_01]: My problem is like so the the topic this topic we decided to talk about this today because as you guys know If you've been listening to podcasts the last couple weeks, you know that for Christmas I got my lovely husband over here a great Christmas gift that he's been using a Christmas gift I've ever received really My life yeah because I It's like a beginning of an addiction in the best way
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: That sounds terrible.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: You don't know what we're talking about in the best because we haven't said what it is.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: No, okay, of course, it's it's it's Yoni's notebook.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's the big topic of 2026, you know.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: So far, yeah, it's been a training theme in the last episodes.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yoni's refillable notebook journal, whatever you want to call it.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: And you just took a flip through away for the first time.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: How did that feel?
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: No, and I must say, it feels really nice to flip through pages that are filled with writing and the way that you write in it is really satisfying.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't get that part when you said I'm not appreciated to me.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's just very rare.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's quite straight.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: Whenever I write in a journal, maybe because anytime I've written in a notebook, I promise you when I can talk about this for real.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: So you're very kind of Free flow with it versus I always just wrote like Oh, okay, so that it sometimes starts like slanting and it bothers me and then sometimes my writing is like weird and then it gets good and then Which just shows you how I?
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I have that too with even just like how I hold my pen because I have two types of writing.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: I can write long and skinny and kind of tilted and I can also write very straight.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to figure out what.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: Younger writes like in, he only writes in caps.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I only write in caps and I like it.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I like it too, but it's very funny, like you never, you don't not write in caps.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_01]: So you only write in caps.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: Which I don't.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: But the reason why I brought up the journal once again is because we were talking about, we were talking through like why don't really use the journal.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: And we were talking about how I like my to-do lists because on my phone, because they are very clean.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: They're very clean.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: If I need to edit something in the calendar, like my Google calendar that I use, as I said, you can, if let's say you have a thing that you need to do like Monday Tuesday, but for something you can't do it, you just drag it over to Tuesday and Wednesday.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's clean and it's easy.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: and it is just clean.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: It looks good and there's no eraser, there's no cutting.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: And you don't have to think like if I had a, if I had like a physical journal, a physical thing, that I might need to change later for whatever reason, like I will use a pencil so then I can erase it because it would bother me too much to like cross it out and write another thing because I used pen.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's like my favorite part of having a notebook.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: If you see how many things across the off?
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like if I make a mistake spelling something wrong, then I would feel like I have to write, I would have to write like spell wrong, huh?
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: No, like someone's reading my notebook first of all.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: There's a thing that I don't know how I misspelled overthinking, right?
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: Or like overthinking.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: So I wrote down on a random page.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: He's like in my random.page, I wrote down overthink.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: Something that I just thought about.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: And I wrote a big part of perfection.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I wrote don't.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: And then overthink, I think I forgot to hire something like that, right?
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't want to leave it like that.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: So I just crossed the whole overthink word.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I just wrote it again on top.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, that's it.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: Doesn't have a notebook, it almost gives a notebook like character.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, it does.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know why I'm such a, like perfectionism.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: You have a notebook and she hasn't started it.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: No, hold on a second.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: I've filled out a whole notebook since I got it last year.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so something I haven't started it, but I think I've been a little bit too, I've been too much of a perfectionist when it comes to like using the notebook, but the reason why I brought that up is because it was also it reminded me of this conversation that me, Yoni, and my friend, Tay, I had when we were co-working at a cafe and we were talking about it was I think when you were
- 5:33[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you had yet started making your YouTube videos yet, your photography videos, and maybe you were just like planning to or figuring it out.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: But we were talking about, I was telling her how I'm trying to help you figure out your process of creating.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_01]: And then we were talking about how I like to really, you know, plan before my videos I like to know exactly where I'm going to go, before I even film a video most of the time, I really visualize what the video is going to look like, how it's going to progress, am I going to talk on the street or am I going to talk at home?
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: Am I going to use this camera or that camera?
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: And if I don't do this preparation, I feel really like anxious.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel really out of control and I feel like the video is not going to be good.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_01]: And that's just become my process.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: So then in you figuring out like your process and the way you want to go about it, I was kind of, I was explaining to you how I feel or how I do it, but I was not really telling you and you should do it the way I do.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: And then I was telling my friend that and then she said that it's really interesting because
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: It seemed like through the conversation she was realizing that you and her are much more similar in the way that you create, which is kind of like through something at the wall and see what happens.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: Versus I need to figure out kind of like what I want to happen and I'm going to try to make it happen.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then you and her are much more like we'll see where this goes to have a thing.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: And we're pivoting whenever we have to, but we'll make it work.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: yeah.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I just don't function in that way.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I think for me, it's a good thing, but it also is like, uh, sometimes I have, I feel like I have my hands tied behind my back.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: Then he brings some stress.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, sometimes a lot.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: But it even, outside of creating, even if we visit a city, San Francisco.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: I can very much be like, you know what, today's Monday, I'm just going to walk around.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: Just check out a few spots or maybe just see how the streets are.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: Just walk around with no specific destination.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: How you can not do that.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: She needs to be like, was treat, are we working on, are we walking on?
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: Was the destination?
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: She needs to have a destination.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: I can go outside with no destination.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not figuring it out.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, am I going to the store?
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: I've gotten a lot better with that.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: You've got a lot better with that?
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's, uh, if you're one way in certain things, it kind of just aligns.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I like it bleeds into most things, most things in life.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: Even you know, like, getting a couch.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: I've been looking to get a new couch.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: You'll never get a couch.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'd love to update a new couch.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: Listen, a couch is expensive.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're going to make such a big purchase,
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: then you want to get what you want to get and I don't want to waste my money or waste like if we're going to buy a new couch then waste that couch.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: On something that is like close to what I would like but not quite but it's going to make it work.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just going to wait until I find the one and I'm going to just
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: And then when you find it, you got to wait six months to get it.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I mean, this is what happened with this couch where we got it because we were like, oh, we want to get something because we don't have anything and this one was the only one in stock.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: All the other ones we liked were going to take like a while to deliver.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: And it was the same old thing.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: Like you just got to be patient.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: You just got to look for one.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where I think perfectionism is not about there.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and your perfectionism in most cases I would say it's more good and bad.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, sometimes it's like debilitating.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if we're talking about work, well, I don't know how you feel while you're creating.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know the stress or I don't know, I know your process kind of, but I don't know how it makes you feel.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think sometimes I like, I found myself that I care too much, that I'm too specific.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not like that.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just kind of like, but no, like, what about ever since you started making your videos?
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: because there's so many components now.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: Before it was like, your art was your photography, but now it's like you've taken another approach to it.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: So you have the photography, but you also have the video, which then itself has to like tell a story, it has to take someone along.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: Like there's so many things you have to think about, differently than before.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: So you're telling me now when you're like editing your video, that you don't find yourself at times, you know, like damn, like I wish.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's okay, don't you like I have many moments where I'm doing the words that I have to do and I'm just like damn like I just wish that I was more like whatever Because then I wouldn't take me so long.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so whenever have those moments No, because I want the video to be good.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: I care about the videos.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: No, so do I but sometimes I feel like I care about things that like
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: I shouldn't care so much about this as I'm spending way too much time on this.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care that much as much as you.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: But like I have to be very detailed in my videos because it's more than just audio and video.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: So I have to care about one moment, the photo appears on the screen.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_00]: I have to think about, but those are, I don't think I'm being a perfectionist in any way.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_00]: I just want to make it have good clips and put it together like what, in your videos for me, it's like short form actually, you know what?
- 11:19[SPEAKER_00]: The short form, I think for you, the perfectionism in your work comes in choosing the perfect song.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I still have the thumbnails.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: The thumbnail, what do you hate more?
- 11:33[SPEAKER_00]: Finding music for your videos or making a thumbnail?
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: Finding music.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: Because when I'm finding music, I know I still got to make the thumbnail.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: At least when I'm making the thumbnail, I know everything else is done is the last thing I have to do.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and sometimes the thumbnail randomly flows into and I've started to I've started to be a little bit more like With the thumbnail, you know With the music you can do that because it'll the music is he's probably like one of the more important parts of the video But I kind of want to make videos with no music
- 12:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm kind of thinking about that too.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: Don't copy me, don't copy me.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: Don't copy me.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not copying you.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_01]: I just didn't even share.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: Don't copy me.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: I want to make videos with just no music.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: If I'm just, if I'm showing you a shot of just the trees, that's all you're going to see.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to be there with me.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: The music sometimes takes you away.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: When you do too much music.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_01]: You gotta know.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: You got a moment to do it, because music is actually very important.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_01]: But the absence of music is also very important.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but the absence of music is highlighted when there was music and then there's no music.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_00]: That's when you feel it.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: As you were talking, I was trying to think about the next thing that I wanted to talk about right now.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: So you're not even listening to me.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, just in that moment.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's okay.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: Go ahead.
