- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days,
- 0:11but even in the darkness, God was at work.
- 0:14Through loss, uncertainty, and unexpected turns,
- 0:18we discover a beautiful story of grace,
- 0:21redemption, and hope. Join Scott Pauley for this
- 0:24new study, The Gospel According to Ruth. Light for
- 0:29Dark Days.
- 0:37I want to share with you today one of the most beautiful and powerful descriptions
- 0:42in all of scripture. You know, God is amazing
- 0:46in the way he communicates to human beings, the,
- 0:50the verbiage that he uses, the visual imagery
- 0:53that he uses in scripture. He really is of the master teacher
- 0:57and communicator. He draws pictures for us so that we can
- 1:01see the truth that he is saying to us. And one of those phrases
- 1:05is couched in Ruth chapter number 2.
- 1:09I want to pick up in verse number 10 where Ruth falls
- 1:13on her face and she asks this question of Boaz, her redeemer:
- 1:17Why have I found grace in thine eyes
- 1:21that thou shouldest take knowledge of me seeing I am
- 1:25a stranger? Isn't that the question we all want to ask? Lord,
- 1:29why would you love sinners like us? But God commendeth his love
- 1:33toward us in that while we were yet sinners,
- 1:37Christ died for us, Romans chapter 5, verse number 8 tells us.
- 1:41So we have the same question. We marvel
- 1:45at the grace of God. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
- 1:48that saved a wretch like me. I once
- 1:52was lost, but now I'm found, was blind, but now I see.
- 1:55And so that is the— that's the question. Now the answer that
- 1:59Boaz gives is, I think, profound.
- 2:03Beginning in verse number 11, Boaz answered and said unto her,
- 2:07it hath fully been showed me all that thou
- 2:10hast done unto thy mother-in-law since the death of thine husband,
- 2:14and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother in the land of thy
- 2:17nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore, The Lord
- 2:21recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee
- 2:25of the Lord God of Israel. Now this is the key phrase: under
- 2:30whose wings thou art come to trust.
- 2:35Do you hear the phrase under his wings?
- 2:39Under whose wings thou art come to trust. At a glance, when you
- 2:43read verse 11 and verse 12, you think, well, she's getting all this
- 2:47blessing because of what she did. She's getting all
- 2:50this blessing because of her works and, and of
- 2:54her, uh, effort. But when you come to
- 2:58the bottom line of his answer, all of that simply
- 3:02grew out of faith. This is very important
- 3:06because we know that in scripture we're taught that salvation comes
- 3:09not of works which we have done, lest any man should boast, but rather
- 3:13it's all by the grace of God. It is by grace through
- 3:17faith. But James teaches us in the New Testament that
- 3:21a faith that works is a working faith,
- 3:24that if it's genuine faith, that faith will be produced—
- 3:28producing obedience, that we will obey
- 3:32the Lord, will follow the Lord Jesus Christ. And so did Ruth
- 3:36follow? Yes. Did she obey? Yes.
- 3:40Did she make right decisions? Yes. But all of that
- 3:44was really the outgrowth of one thing. It was
- 3:48her simple faith in the Lord
- 3:52Jesus, in our Lord God. And he uses this imagery,
- 3:55under whose wings thou art come to trust. He continues,
- 3:59look at verse 13. She says to him, let me find favor in thy
- 4:03sight, my lord, for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoke
- 4:07friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.
- 4:12And Boaz said unto her, at mealtime come thou hither and
- 4:16eat of the bread and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside
- 4:19the reapers, and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat and
- 4:23was sufficed and left. And when she was risen up to glean,
- 4:26Boaz commanded his young men, saying, let her glean even among the sheaves and reproach
- 4:31her not. And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her and
- 4:35leave them, that she may glean them and rebuke her not. So she
- 4:38gleaned in the field unto even and beat out that she had gleaned, and it
- 4:42was about an ephah of barley. So all these
- 4:46blessings come as a result of one thing.
- 4:49And what was that one thing? She had come to trust
- 4:53the Lord God, under whose wings
- 4:57thou art come to trust. Do you understand that every good thing in
- 5:01our life comes because of grace?
- 5:05And it comes by faith. Let me repeat that: every good
- 5:08thing in our life comes because of grace and
- 5:12by faith. Don't miss those 2 key elements,
- 5:16the 2 vital ingredients in Ruth, because remember Ruth
- 5:20said that Boaz showed grace to her, and Boaz in
- 5:24turn said, I showed this grace because of your trust,
- 5:27or because of your faith. I think
- 5:31sometimes we get the idea that God just
- 5:35haphazardly blesses people. He, he just decides
- 5:38he's going to do something for people at
- 5:42random, flipping a coin in heaven. Friends, that's not how God works.
- 5:46God has a sovereign plan and purpose. God is at work in this world,
- 5:51but God is revealing himself to man. Man is responding to God,
- 5:55and then God in turn responds to man's
- 5:59response to him. Sometimes we have the idea
- 6:02that people get blessed because of some effort on
- 6:07their part. And while I believe in hard work and I certainly believe
- 6:11in obedience, I want you to know that all of that must be rooted in
- 6:14faith, because it's not us, friends, it's all the Lord.
- 6:19Now, this phrase, under his wings, we're going to come back to
- 6:23I want to show you that this expression is used throughout scripture to
- 6:28reveal both the strength and the tenderness of God, his care and keeping
- 6:32of his children, peace in turmoil,
- 6:35and divine safety in dangerous times. In fact,
- 6:39let me give you just a little footnote to this. Perhaps you
- 6:43can begin looking them up on your own. There are approximately 55
- 6:46different references to wings in the Bible.
- 6:50And most often those wings are a symbol of strength. For example,
- 6:54the eagle lifting up— here it is coming under.
- 6:58But in both of those analogies or imageries, the idea
- 7:02is the strength, the wing strength.
- 7:05So we, we come under his wings. But let me begin
- 7:09by showing you the implications of this. What does it mean to trust the Lord?
- 7:13What does it mean to come under his wings? Well, first of all,
- 7:17It is a picture of protection. We're sheltered,
- 7:22not from all trouble. No, Ruth had her problems.
- 7:26I have my problems. You're going to have your problems. But we are sheltered
- 7:30from eternal loss. Do you understand that the devil
- 7:33cannot get to you, and evil cannot
- 7:37harm you, and hell cannot touch you because
- 7:41you are under his wings. And so the idea
- 7:45here is that there is— there's safety, there is protection
- 7:49in that. Mr. Moody, D.L. Moody, left Great Britain after
- 7:53a year of ministry in 1892, and 3 days out of port, their ship
- 7:57ground to a halt. There was a broken shaft and they started
- 8:01taking on water. And after about 2 days, the situation got so
- 8:04desperate Moody called a prayer meeting,
- 8:08and they said that the ship was rocking and reeling And
- 8:11so Mr. Moody held on to a pillar, uh, on board
- 8:16that ship, and he opened his Bible to Psalm 91.
- 8:20And Psalm 91, of course, is a famous psalm,
- 8:24but this is the way it begins: He that dwelleth in
- 8:27the secret place of the Most High shall abide
- 8:32under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord,
- 8:36he is my refuge and my fortress, My God,
- 8:40in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee
- 8:44from the snare of the fowler and from the noisome pestilence. Now listen to verse
- 8:47number 4: He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under
- 8:51his wings shalt thou trust. His truth shall be thy shield and
- 8:55buckler. Do you hear the exact same expression? Under his wings they've come to trust.
- 9:00He later said that in the darkest hour of his life, when he thought he
- 9:03might die, God sent relief through Psalm 91 in
- 9:07a season of prayer. He went to bed, went to sleep, and a ship came
- 9:10and rescued them all. Oh, aren't you glad that we belong to the God who
- 9:15can be trusted? He is trustworthy, and you can come under his wings
- 9:19to find protection.
