Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Let's go statesides. Of course, we have a new miror
- 0:03Speaker 1: of New York City who's gannering headlines, one because he's
- 0:06Speaker 1: the first Muslim mir of New York City, but also
- 0:08Speaker 1: because in the financial capital of the world, arguably we
- 0:11Speaker 1: have a socialist mia to Groutie Dave is with me
- 0:14Speaker 1: from Feature Story News this morning. Good morning morning. So
- 0:19Speaker 1: he's just head a press conference. What's he's saying, do
- 0:20Speaker 1: we know?
- 0:22Speaker 2: Well, he has essentially been talking about the reasons why
- 0:26Speaker 2: he's won. He's been taking questions and he is really
- 0:31Speaker 2: you know, I think playing on that victory speech that
- 0:34Speaker 2: he gave where he was talking about, you know, how
- 0:37Speaker 2: his campaign has defeated a dynasty, a political dynasty, talking
- 0:41Speaker 2: about Andrew Coomo, his major rival, who got the backing
- 0:44Speaker 2: of Donald Trump. Despite that Coomo didn't get you know,
- 0:48Speaker 2: enough Republicans to go on board and you know, go
- 0:52Speaker 2: vote for Cuomo. And so, you know, I think this
- 0:55Speaker 2: is a real shift in for the Democrats in many
- 0:58Speaker 2: ways because they've been kind of in the wilderness a
- 1:01Speaker 2: little bit since Donald Trump's election, and they're getting a
- 1:05Speaker 2: little bit of you know, wind under their sales looking
- 1:09Speaker 2: forward to the midterms, and I think this is just
- 1:11Speaker 2: sort of the momentum in New York. You know, this
- 1:14Speaker 2: is what he's really been talking about. The cost of
- 1:16Speaker 2: living is what Zoron Mum Danny really rode on. And
- 1:20Speaker 2: it's an indication that that is really what elections ride on.
- 1:23Speaker 2: It's the economy, stupid, That's what we're always told. And
- 1:26Speaker 2: I think this election proves that that is still the case.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And yet the Democrats aren't running towards some arms open,
- 1:34Speaker 1: are they. I mean, this is the awkward thing for them.
- 1:37Speaker 1: They he's quite radical in terms of the political spectrum
- 1:40Speaker 1: in the US, so trying to present that and this
- 1:43Speaker 1: is why the Republicans are trying to paint him as
- 1:45Speaker 1: the defecto leader of the Democrats, right, because it's better
- 1:49Speaker 1: for them.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the Democrats have always had this issue.
- 1:54Speaker 2: You know, when you look at in primaries when Bernie
- 1:57Speaker 2: Sanders was running, you've always had the left of the
- 1:59Speaker 2: party and the so called moderates of the party wrestling
- 2:04Speaker 2: as to the identity of the Democratic Party as a whole.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And I thinks or On Mum Danny is part of
- 2:10Speaker 2: that conversation that the Democrats are going to be having.
- 2:13Speaker 2: You know, people like Chuck Schumer didn't endorse mum Dani before,
- 2:18Speaker 2: openly endorse mum Danny before his victory, and now is
- 2:22Speaker 2: talking about how this is his victory and there's results
- 2:24Speaker 2: results as a whole of Democratic candidates winning on different
- 2:28Speaker 2: ballots in different ballots is a repudiation of Donald Trump.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So they're really juggling with this idea of somebody who
- 2:34Speaker 2: calls himself unashamingly a democratic socialist, who is you know,
- 2:38Speaker 2: the city's first Muslim mayor, who is a immigrant. All
- 2:42Speaker 2: of this is an identity. How do they grapple that
- 2:44Speaker 2: with the moderates who are saying, well, we need to
- 2:46Speaker 2: be making talking points that are going to be bringing
- 2:48Speaker 2: Repubs over.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, and Tregriuty appreciate that reporting this morning. Thank you, Deregretty.
