Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Tuesday, and that means that the Yukon Football Coaches
- 0:03Speaker 1: Show is on the air. Jim Mora joins us from
- 0:07Speaker 1: stores on, Mike Crispino and coach. Coming off a win
- 0:11Speaker 1: like you had at home, to kick it off in
- 0:14Speaker 1: front of all those happy tailgaters and husky fans must
- 0:17Speaker 1: have been a good feeling. Getting back in the building Saturday.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it was great, and especially seeing the students section
- 0:24Speaker 2: fool like it was and feeling their energy. They were
- 0:28Speaker 2: in there early, they were having fun. Thankfully we were
- 0:32Speaker 2: able to give them something to cheer about. And going
- 0:35Speaker 2: into the stadium on the buses and seeing the parking
- 0:39Speaker 2: lot filling up and people out there throwing the ball
- 0:42Speaker 2: around and tailgating and having a couple of beverages getting
- 0:46Speaker 2: ready to go. It was a great feeling. It was
- 0:48Speaker 2: an exciting feeling. It's the way you want to feel
- 0:51Speaker 2: at home. Yeah, we really appreciate our students and the
- 0:55Speaker 2: people that came out on a Saturday and enjoyed the
- 0:57Speaker 2: day with us.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It was a beautiful day for football, and you can't
- 1:00Speaker 1: played a beautiful football game, that's for sure. I did
- 1:03Speaker 1: get a chance to wander around in the tailgating area
- 1:06Speaker 1: before the game and between some of the things that
- 1:08Speaker 1: we have to do. And I've really felt a sense
- 1:11Speaker 1: of enthusiasm among the fans you know, who were there,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and I see a lot of folks regulars that I know,
- 1:19Speaker 1: and I see a lot of new people coming in,
- 1:21Speaker 1: and I really liked that feeling. There seems to be
- 1:23Speaker 1: some momentum maybe building here and you got this home
- 1:27Speaker 1: stand ahead of you, but obviously you got Duke on
- 1:30Speaker 1: the road first.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, Here's what was impressive to me is
- 1:34Speaker 2: that coming off of disappointing, you know, really a blowout
- 1:38Speaker 2: loss at Maryland, I didn't know that we'd get the
- 1:42Speaker 2: kind of reception that we got. And I think that
- 1:45Speaker 2: a lot of the credit has to go to people
- 1:47Speaker 2: like Neil Dom who work with football and their efforts
- 1:52Speaker 2: to get the students out there, are marketing people, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 2: pushing the team on people, and then the people like
- 2:00Speaker 2: Mike Burton and John Moftone and Dennis Naden and Jared
- 2:05Speaker 2: you know, guys that have really kind of pushed the
- 2:06Speaker 2: NIL initiative and helped us bring in some players that
- 2:09Speaker 2: have some name value, name recognition that people were excited
- 2:12Speaker 2: to see and those guys ended up making some plays.
- 2:16Speaker 2: So you know, we got a tough game this week
- 2:18Speaker 2: against Duke, as you said, and then we get into
- 2:20Speaker 2: a nice, you know, six game homestand and we need
- 2:23Speaker 2: to give our fans a reason to keep coming out
- 2:26Speaker 2: to the games.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it is. You know, you've got to appreciate all
- 2:29Speaker 1: those folks you mentioned because you know, day to day
- 2:32Speaker 1: they're putting the same you know, kind of efforts in
- 2:34Speaker 1: a different area than you and your staff are. But
- 2:36Speaker 1: it takes so much of an effort to build a
- 2:38Speaker 1: football program, get a foundation going, get it moving forward
- 2:42Speaker 1: in this era we're in. So I really, I really
- 2:45Speaker 1: appreciate the fact that you compliment these folks because they're
- 2:49Speaker 1: so I mean, they're so important really to this success
- 2:52Speaker 1: you're trying to have.
- 2:53Speaker 2: They're critical, and you know they're behind the scenes, but
- 2:56Speaker 2: their role is so important. Are success really anyone that
- 3:01Speaker 2: touches this program, anyone from you know, the guys that
- 3:05Speaker 2: are in charge of helping us have healthy fields to
- 3:08Speaker 2: miss Pam and the kitchen to you know, you name it.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Every every single every single person is responsible when we
- 3:16Speaker 2: have success and you know, accountable when we have failure.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And they all take it on that way, and so
- 3:22Speaker 2: it's a healthy environment and it's a good environment. It's
- 3:25Speaker 2: an environment that you can win in and we just
- 3:27Speaker 2: have to keep cultivating it and.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Coach, I know, with the transfer portal, we've talked about
- 3:32Speaker 1: this already a couple different times. You bring in so
- 3:34Speaker 1: many players, it's part of the deal now, and you
- 3:37Speaker 1: don't know what you're really getting. You're interviewing people, they
- 3:41Speaker 1: want to come, you want to bring them on. But
- 3:43Speaker 1: it looks like you've hit a couple of home runs
- 3:45Speaker 1: here early. And I want you to talk about that
- 3:48Speaker 1: a little bit because it's such a different chemistry for you.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Isn't it as a coach to kind of recruit guys
- 3:55Speaker 1: that have already played somewhere else or maybe two places
- 3:58Speaker 1: before they come to Yukon.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you don't know them as well. I've made
- 4:03Speaker 2: this comparison a lot. It's a little bit like speed dating,
- 4:06Speaker 2: you know, high school recruiting, you get to know these
- 4:08Speaker 2: kids pretty done well. Portal recruiting, it happens very very fast.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So you rely on people that you know to give
- 4:14Speaker 2: you some knowledge about these people in terms of their character,
- 4:18Speaker 2: you know, on and off the field. But we we
- 4:21Speaker 2: at this point feel good about the guys we brought
- 4:23Speaker 2: in both their production on the field and the way
- 4:25Speaker 2: that they have handled them themselves off the field, the
- 4:29Speaker 2: way that they've you know, integrated themselves into this team.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And you know, that's just so important because it's more
- 4:36Speaker 2: than about talent. It's about you know, giving yourself to
- 4:39Speaker 2: the team. And we've got a bunch of guys that
- 4:41Speaker 2: are doing that. So that's a great thing for us.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and also a couple of freshmen we're going to
- 4:45Speaker 1: get into talking about the game obviously, but impressive personnel wise.
- 4:49Speaker 1: I mean, a guy like Darrell Robinson comes from Charlotte,
- 4:52Speaker 1: he's only a red shirt freshman. And the great catch
- 4:55Speaker 1: by Schamar Porter down there in the end zone. I mean,
- 4:58Speaker 1: you got these young guys too. I mean it's a
- 5:00Speaker 1: good feel in terms of the building of a foundation
- 5:05Speaker 1: of a roster, it seems.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah, And you know, those guys are red shirt freshmen,
- 5:10Speaker 2: so they've had some time. But there's also a couple
- 5:12Speaker 2: of true freshmen that you know, maybe haven't heard their
- 5:15Speaker 2: name yet, they haven't made a play yet, but they're
- 5:18Speaker 2: on the verge of it. You know. You guy like
- 5:20Speaker 2: Rock Montgomery who's the receiver and has played significant snaps.
- 5:24Speaker 2: He just hasn't had a target yet. You know, we
- 5:26Speaker 2: have high hopes for him. Not a lot of freshmen,
- 5:29Speaker 2: true freshmen playing for us right now, but guys that
- 5:32Speaker 2: are improving every week. You know, a lot of red
- 5:35Speaker 2: shirt freshmen playing. So but yeah, I feel good about
- 5:38Speaker 2: our young guys, you know. I like the way they work,
- 5:40Speaker 2: I like the way they respond. I feel good about
- 5:43Speaker 2: our depth, feel good about our depth.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And you had a veteran quarterback in Joe Finnano who
- 5:50Speaker 1: came off the bench really because your starter, Nick Evers
- 5:53Speaker 1: couldn't make the start, and you couldn't have asked for
- 5:56Speaker 1: a better performance, I don't think. I mean, he pretty
- 5:59Speaker 1: much ran the offense for Gordon Samus about the way
- 6:03Speaker 1: you'd want it to be run.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Yeah, he did a great job. You know, Joe is
- 6:07Speaker 2: an experienced player, He's a veteran player. He's obviously was
- 6:12Speaker 2: disappointed when he wasn't named the starter, But rather than
- 6:15Speaker 2: sulking and wasting time feeling sorry for himself, you know,
- 6:20Speaker 2: he just continued to throw himself into this program. And
- 6:27Speaker 2: I knew that if he needed to be called upon,
- 6:29Speaker 2: he'd be ready to go. That's just who Joe is.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And he's a real pro. He's a mature kid. We
- 6:36Speaker 2: love him to death. And he went out and he
- 6:38Speaker 2: showed you know what can happen when you get over
- 6:41Speaker 2: your disappointment, your frustration. You just keep working. And he
- 6:44Speaker 2: did a great job on Saturday. And he did a
- 6:46Speaker 2: great job.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah, threw ball well, obviously, but also ran the ball. Coach,
- 6:51Speaker 1: he got out there and he ran pretty well when
- 6:53Speaker 1: he had his hands on it, thirty eight yards gained.
- 6:55Speaker 1: He had a nineteen yarder. No Jo can run.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I mean he's you know, he's not the fastest or
- 7:02Speaker 2: the most nimble guy in the world's you know, but
- 7:05Speaker 2: he's certainly athletic enough to do some really good things.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And we saw that Saturday.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yep. All right, to a quick time out and we'll
- 7:12Speaker 1: be back in just a moment with Jim Moore of
- 7:14Speaker 1: the Yukon Football Coaches Show on liar Field
